Brazilian Nuts Trail

Level: 2 Duration: 2 hours Recommended Time: Morning or in the afternoon Recommended for: All visitors Availability: Year-round

About the Activity: Brazilian Nuts Trail

  • During this activity brazilian nuts trail, you will get to know this magnificent and large tree, and depending on the season, you may observe its fruits.
  • Throughout the walk, you will have the opportunity to observe the flora and fauna as it is a forest protected by a local community that benefits from chestnut harvesting.
  • You will also learn how brazilian nuts harvesting is done through an explanation from your assigned guide.
  • You’ll understand how this activity is sustainable and environmentally friendly, and how we can contribute to sustainability ourselves.

Highlights about the Brazilian Nuts in Madre de Dios

Brazil nuts fruits that grow in tropical forests, particularly abundant and of great economic and environmental importance in the Madre de Dios region (the only region in Peru where Brazil nuts are found).

The collection and sale of brazilian nuts are crucial economic activities for local communities, which heavily depend on brazilian nuts as a source of income. Local artisans also put chestnuts to various uses.

The harvesting is done sustainably, meaning it is practiced in a way that does not deplete forest resources. This is important to ensure that this source of income is maintained in the long term; hence, these are considered non-timber trees.

These trees can grow to over 50 meters, and their fruit is collected only after it falls naturally.

This collection often takes place in primary and secondary forests, which can provide an incentive to keep these forests intact rather than converting them into agricultural or other land uses. Therefore, brazilian nuts can play a significant role in the conservation of the Amazonian forests.

Why You’ll Love the Brazil Nut Trail

  • Be Inspired by Sustainable Farming:  Brazil Nut trees only grow under  pristine jungle conditions , and people only collect their seeds once they’ve naturally fallen. Due to these unique factors, the trees actually  encourage  sustainable practices ! You’ll also learn what it takes to preserve the Brazil Nut Tree and its sustainable farming. Over-hunting of the tree’s seed dispersers, like the  Agouti , and over-harvesting of the nuts must stop for the trees and Brazil Nut harvesting to survive.
  • Discover a Rainforest Miracle Plant:  Brazil Nut Trees are some of the  tallest in the Amazon , stretching up to 50 meters (160 feet). The nuts themselves fall in coconut-like shells that weigh up to five pounds, and are so hard that we can only open them with several machete swings! And the nuts are packed with healthy fats, protein, and vitamins, making them popular worldwide.

Where is the Hamakua Macadamia Nut Factory?

The Hamakua Macadamia Nut Factory is located about 50 minutes north of Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. The address is  61-3251 Maluokalani St. Kawaihae, Hawaii 96743 .

I recommend using GPS to find it as it’s tucked away from the highway. Their sign by the road is also pretty faded, so it’s easy to miss.

What’s the History Behind Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company?

The Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company was founded in 1993. They use 100% locally grown Hawaiian macadamia nuts in their products.

Image of a boy walking toward the camera with the Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company in the background.

This company is part of the Edmund C. Olson Trust II, which owns more than 1300 acres of macadamia nut farms. They have a focus on sustainability and conservation.

How to Visit this Big Island Macadamia Nut Factory

It’s pretty awesome that there’s a Hamakua Macadamia Nut Factory Visitor’s Center that is open to the public.

You can enjoy the visitor center and go on a Big Island macadamia nut tour with this incredible Hawaiian macadamia nut company.

Free Hawaiian Macadamia Nuts Tasting

As soon as we entered, Danette warmly welcomed us and ushered us over to the macadamia nut-tasting area. We got to try SO many yummy flavors like buttered rum, soy sauce, pumpkin pie, and more.

Image of a woman wearing a floral apron putting macadamia nuts in little containers for a Hawaiian macadamia nut tasting.

She put each nut into a little cup so it was easy for us to taste them. My 5-year-old loved the seasonal flavors (specifically the pumpkin pie one). I preferred the chili pepper ones because they had a little kick!

How to Crack a Macadamia Nut Activity

Right near the entrance, there are a couple of metal nutcrackers where people can try to crack their own macadamia nuts. It’s a fun activity, and my 5-year-old was able to do this easily.

Image of a boy cracking macadamia nuts using a tool.

Just remember not to actually eat the nuts. It’s a liability issue.

Self-Guided Hamakua Macadamia Nut Factory Tour

One of the highlights of visiting the Hamakua Macadamia Factory is getting to see the process of getting the products out on shelves. They have large showroom windows with labels, so you know what step of the process they are working on.

Image of a boy looking through a window at workers putting labels on macadamia nut cans.

When we were there, they were adding labels to the cans of Hawaii macadamia nuts as well as the lids. My son watched this for about 10 minutes. The workers were so friendly and kept showing him exactly what they were doing.

It made this macadamia nut tour Big Island offers kid-friendly and quite amazing.

Hamakua Macadamia Nut Farm Video

After you watch the workers in the assembly line, you can sit down for a few moments and watch an informative video that shows the Hamakua Mac Nut farm.

Image of a boy watching a video of macadamia nut farming.

The video is a little outdated, but the information is all really great, and we learned a LOT about macadamia nuts and how to tell if it’s ready to eat.

Hamakua Gift Shop

They have a really impressive gift shop filled with their own Hamakua macadamia nut items as well as other local Big Island products.

Image of the interior of a macadamia nut factory gift shop featuring shelves of mac nut products.

This is a great place to stock up on Big Island souvenirs to bring home to friends or family. We ended up buying extra Hawaiian nuts just to have on hand for the holiday season.

You’ll find anything from Hawaiian macadamia nut cookies, Kona Coffee, chocolates galore, and so much more.

Hawaii Macadamia Nuts FAQs

Nope. In fact, they are actually from Australia. The macadamia nut tree was brought to the Big Island in 1881 by William Purvis, a sugar cane plantation manager. Hawaii’s climate is perfect for growing the nut, and Hawaii is currently the #3 macadamia nut producer in the world, with various macadamia nut farms in Hawaii.

A scientist named John Macadam first classified the macadamia tree in the mid-1800s in Melbourne, Australia.

They work with more than 200 local Hawaii macadamia nut farms to get all the nuts they use in their products.

Yes, you will find some macadamia farms on Hawaii’s Big Island. The Mauna Loa macadamia nut factory is one of the biggest macadamia nut factories Hilo offers, while Hamakua is one macadamia nut farm close to Kona.

Macadamia nuts are generally good for you. They provide you with protein, fiber, antioxidants, and so much more. Flavored macadamia nuts, especially chocolate-covered macadamia nuts, aren’t as healthy but still a decent snack to enjoy.

Yes, they are tree nuts, as there are tons of macadamia trees all over the Big Island’s land. You can go on a Big Island macadamia nut tour to learn the macadamia nut history, see the trees, and get some free samples too!

Hamakua Macadamia Nut Farm Wrap Up

We thought the Hamakua Macadamia Nut Factory was a really fun stop on our drive around the Big Island of Hawaii. It’s a pretty short drive from Waikoloa and is one of the best macadamia nut factory Big Island offers.

If you’re heading back to Kona with kids, take the road leading up to Waimea. They have a really awesome playground where kids can get some wiggles out. Plus, the weather is much cooler up there if you need a break from the heat.

These Big Island macadamia nut farm tours are worth it for the entire family! From the free samples to the self-guided tour, this macadamia plantation is awesome! If you want a macadamia nut farm tour on the Big Island, Hamakua does not disappoint!

Visit a Macadamia Nut Farm

By Hawaii.com Team

Facebook

More than a century ago, a Big Island sugar plantation manager introduced macadamia nuts to the island. Although native to the Australian rainforests, mac nuts thrived in Hawaii, and the state became the site of the world’s first commercial plantations. Today these delicious, hard-shelled nuts, which are high in the “good” fat that helps reduce cholesterol levels, are one of the Big Island’s largest crops.

Some 60 million pounds of mac nuts were produced on the Big Island in 2005/2006. With the exception of a small farm on Molokai, all the state’s mac nuts are grown on the Big Island.

Macadamia nuts are not picked from the tree. They fall to the ground fully ripened. Don’t pick one up expecting to shell it and pop it in your mouth. It requires 300 pounds of pressure per square inch to crack a mac nut shell. (Hint: To avoid smashing body parts, try wrapping the nut in an old sock or newspaper before hitting it with a hammer.) Commercially, the job gets done with high tech cracking machines, after which the nuts are roasted.

Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corp., six miles south of Hilo on Macadamia Road, and Hamakua Macadamia Nut Co., on Maluokalani Street in Kawaihae, welcome visits from people who want to know more about mac nut processing. At Mauna Loa, you’ll find a 2,500-acre orchard, a nut processing plant and chocolate factory. Hamakua offers a visitor center, self-guided tours and free samples.

For more information, pick up the “Great Hawaiian Mac Nut Trail,” a self-guided tour of the Big Island’s macadamia nut industry. You’ll find everything from processing plants to small family-owned farms and a bed-and-breakfast stop where visitors can pick mac nuts.

History of the Saints

The Pioneer Trail is one of the most revered chapters in our history and Glenn and Dennis are going to take you there—stand in the ruts of the trail (literally and figuratively) and tell you the history of what happened—the people, the places, the events that make our history sacred!

The first tour will journey from Salt Lake City to Nauvoo, by bus, stopping at all the major sites and landmarks along the trail until we reach Nauvoo. We will tour Nauvoo and Carthage, send that group flying home, and then welcome another group and retrace our steps back to Salt Lake City. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with two old hands of the trail. (Some just call them “Rut nuts”)

The entire adventure from beginning to end promises to be instructive, edifying and inspiring. Their goal is for you to come home more determined to be as true and faithful as they were.

Mauna Loa harvests some 35 million pounds of macadamia nuts a year for use in cooking, making confections, and for sale to the public at visitor centers and stores throughout Hawai`i and internationally. The mature macadamia nut trees create wonderful shade with their dark green foliage and white, raceme blossoms in Winter and Spring. The main harvest is in Summer and Fall.

In 1881, the first macadamia tree was brought to Hawaii from Australia, and the first pioneer plantation began in 1921.  It was in 1922 that the University of Hawaii embarked on 20 years of testing and research. Some 60,000 trees were observed and tested in a painstaking process of selection and grafting. Eventually, nine strains were developed that could consistently produce a high-quality nut. That was the beginning of a long partnership between MAUNA LOA and the University of Hawaii, which continues today.

The original plantation of what was to become Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation was established in 1946. The very first macadamia nut trees were planted early that year near Kea'au on the Big Island of Hawaii, where that plantation continues to thrive today.

In 1956, the first commercial crop was harvested.  Macadamia trees take seven years to produce a commercial crop and 15 years before they a producing consistently. By 1976, the sugar plantation business in Hawaii was waning.  Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation began converting five old sugar plantations to macadamia plantations at the rate of 1000 acres a year. Most of those trees are still producing the premium macadamia nuts that they use to produce the commercial nuts today.

Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation reduces its carbon footprint by burning macadamia husks, shells, and waste kernel to generate the energy required to power its Hilo processing facility. This renewable biofuel accounts for 60% of the facility's electricity usage; greatly reducing Mauna Loa's reliance on oil produced energy.

Mauna Loa has also reduced its overall reliance on electrical energy by channeling the generated steam to heat the factory's nut drying tanks. Also, to further reduce reliance on non-organic fertilizer, waste macadamia husks are composted and returned as organic fertilizer to the orchards.

"We live in such special and delicate surroundings that we sometimes take it for granted. It is surreal to see volcanoes and lush forests every day and we easily forget how privileged we are or the responsibility we all have in preserving and protecting our environment," stated Charles Young, Plant Manager at Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation.

Including 1.5 ounces of macadamia nuts, each day may lead to an improvement in blood cholesterol levels, according to a study funded by The Hershey Company (NYSE: HSY).  Macadamia nuts are a concentrated source of monounsaturated fat, which, when eaten regularly may help displace sources of cholesterol-raising saturated fats in the diet, however, the data indicate there may be other healthful compounds in macadamia nuts. The reductions in blood cholesterol with the macadamia nut diet are greater than what would be expected solely on the basis of the type of fat consumed, suggesting that there are other bioactive factors in macadamia nuts.

The Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Visitor Center is located on a plantation on Macadamia Road off Highway 11 between Hilo and Volcanoes National Park.

Court documents said Rayher moved and hid personal effects belonging to Krider from the scene after his death.

Police in New York reported Krider missing on April 6.

The 40-year-old victim, also known as T.J. Green, was an employee and tour guide at the “Star Trek” set tour in Ticonderoga.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

The Hamakua Macadamia Nut Factory is located about 50 minutes north of Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. The address is 61-3251 Maluokalani St. Kawaihae, Hawaii 96743.
