Oman Car Insurance Cover

If you’re planning a trip to Oman then you will require this specialized car insurance

Oman Car Insurance Cover

Oman, like the UAE, requires that all drivers have their vehicles insured. What does this mean for you if you’re planning to make a cross-border drive from the UAE to Oman?

Does my UAE Car Insurance Apply in Oman?

Several car insurance providers in the UAE extend their coverage to Oman (as well as other neighboring Gulf states). However, some policies strictly apply to the UAE only. In these cases, you will need to purchase the required insurance at the UAE-Oman border before you can drive into the country.

This can be a potentially time-consuming process, depending on factors like the time of the year and the length of the queue. Check with your insurance provider if they provide coverage for your car in Oman before making the trip, so you can prepare accordingly.

In addition to obtaining Oman car insurance for your vehicle, a cross-border trip from the UAE to Oman also requires the following:

  • Enough money for payment (in AED) of the exit tax from the UAE
  • Visa and fee to enter Oman (AED or Omani OR currency should be accepted).
  • A valid passport (with 6 months validity)
  • Proof of ownership of the vehicle. If you do not own the car, it’s a good idea to have a letter of consent from the owner, along with their contact details.

What About Rental Cars?

Due to a legislation change in Oman, rental cars are generally not allowed across the border even if the driver and passengers have all the correct paperwork. Despite this, many rental companies in the UAE provide optional insurance for travel to Oman. Be aware that going this route carries a potential risk of being turned away at the border.

What are my Options for Oman Car Insurance?

The best option for car insurance in Oman depends on how often you will be entering the country. If you travel there frequently, you should consider selecting a car insurance policy in the UAE that also covers Oman. Alternatively, you could purchase separate car insurance for Oman, if it’s not a journey you make regularly.

If you regularly travel to Oman from the UAE, it is worth getting basic car insurance that covers you for both regions. If your basic insurance policy doesn’t include Oman car insurance, it can be purchased additionally. Whatever the case may be, Compare Insurance makes it easy to find the right cover for you. Visit the Compare Insurance site and compare multiple insurance policies quickly and easily.

As the Eid Al Fitr holidays kickstart soon, many residents in the UAE are making plans to travel outside the country. Oman, with its beautiful mountains and beaches and being not very far, is a top choice.

A road trip to the Sultanate is also much favoured as it costs a lot less than air tickets.

However, you could face long queues and some heavy traffic during this peak time as has been observed on previous Eids and long weekends.

Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.

To speed up the process and ensure there are no further obstacles, besides your visa and passport, you need to have the following car-related documents ready at the border post:

  • Driver's licence
  • Mulkiya or car registration card
  • Orange card, which is a car insurance certificate that should be valid in Oman.

How to get the orange card?

The orange card is a must when travelling to the neighbouring country of Oman as it ensures any vehicle-related damage and accidents are covered and compensated. Here's how you can get it:

  • Check with your current car insurance company if the coverage is extended to Oman. If it does, seek an 'orange card' from the insurer. Free of charge, the card can be showed in electronic format or as a physical card. [Note: In case your policy extends coverage to Oman, and if you don't have the actual documents of the orange card, you would still be allowed to cross the border].

A vehicle licence with Oman coverage

  • In case your insurance does not cover you to drive in Oman, many insurance companies provide it at an additional fee. You can ask your insurance company to extend the coverage to Oman and issue an orange card.
  • The third option is to purchase temporary insurance at the border crossing; however, there is a rider there. It covers third-party damage only, which means it will not pay for damage to your car.
  • A car cover usually costs around Dh105 for five days. That is the minimum number of days for which you can purchase insurance at the border post.

To know more about how you are covered, please refer to the policy wordings.

Comprehensive Car Insurance also covers

  • Fortuitous Accident – Collision or Overturning.
  • Fire – External Explosion – Self Ignition or Lighting.
  • Flood – Storm – Tempest – Cyclone.
  • Burglary or Theft.
  • Malicious act by any third party.

Third Party Liability (TPL) Insurance

Third Party Liability (TPL) Insurance

This is the minimum insurance required to drive your car on public roads

Without TPL (which is part of the comprehensive insurance) cover, you are by law not allowed to drive your car on public roads

TPL insurance covers injuries or damage that you may cause upon others in case of an accident but does not cover any damage to your car or property or any injuries you may have following an accident

We acknowledge that every individual has different priorities. This is why we offer a wide range of additional covers to include more options for your car so that you get the cover to suit your needs

All optional covers can be added to your comprehensive car insurance – and some, where mentioned , can be added to your Third Party Liability insurance too

As per Omani law, owners of cars which are more than a year old must pay a certain percentage of the spare parts used for claims repair. OQIC offers protection from this so you’ll never have to pay anything for the depreciation of spare parts (if you have Agency repair cover)

Personal Accident Cover

Personal Accident Cover

The comprehensive insurance already covers you and the passengers in case of an accident. With the Personal Accident Cover, the benefits are extended even more

Agency Repair

Repairs of your car will always be done at your car brand’s agency during the first year of its registration. However, after the first year, we may choose to repair it at a workshop we see fit for providing an equally good service. If you want to make sure that your car is always repaired at the agency, you need to add this to your comprehensive insurance

Off-Road Cover

Off-Road Cover

Many roads in Oman are still not paved and the standard comprehensive insurance does not cover your vehicle for accidents happening on non-paved roads such as access roads to the beach, construction sites etc. With the Off-Road cover, you are covered on such roads

How to get vehicle insurance renewal in Oman done?

Being a motor insurance holder one clearly understands the benefit and relaxed feeling that it gives. Therefore, if the insurance is expiring, it becomes important that vehicle insurance is renewed. As the time of renewal arise; offers start coming, therefore, selecting the best offer becomes a daunting task. There are several factors that one needs to consider before renewing the contract.

Before selecting the renewed policy, it is important to consider the Insured Declared Value (IDV). For a new car, the IDV is decided by the manufacturer’s listed price. As the car is out of the showroom, the IDV starts to reduce. The value of the car depreciates from 5% in the first six months to 50% in the first five years. Thus on the basis of IDV, the premium is calculated.

How to rent a car in Oman

What do you need to rent a car in Oman?

When you decide to rent a car in Oman, you’ll need to think of the following documents to bring upon pickup:

  • Your driver’s license from your home country
  • Your ID (passport)
  • Credit Card in your name (debit card doesn’t work)
  • Visa for Oman

The legal driving age in Oman is 18 years old. However, to rent a car, most agencies require drivers to be at least 25 years old and to have had their license for at least one year. Some rental agencies in Oman might allow 21 to 24-year-olds to rent a car but charge high costs in case of an accident. The maximum age to rent a car is 70 – 75 years old. All drivers must present a valid driver’s license, an ID as proof of their identity, and a credit card to make the payment.

International Driving Permit

It’s not required by law to have an International Driver’s Permit if you’ve got a driver’s license written in a Roman or Arabic language. If you don’t, then an IDP is recommended. The rental agency might not ask for one, but when stopped by the police, they might request to see it. You can arrange an IDP here , which costs only 15 USD.

Note: If the police stop you on the road, they might require you to provide a current visa for Oman. Always have this, as well as proof of insurance, car documentation, and your passport with you in the car when driving.

Rental car insurance in Oman

When renting a car in Oman, standard insurance (Collision Damage Waiver) is typically already included in the total price. This covers you for any damages implicated by a third party. Depending on your itinerary and plans, you can discuss with the rental agency what other add-ons might be convenient for you to purchase.

Additional insurance or full coverage is not mandatory but recommended to avoid issues and hefty fees. If you plan on going off-roading, note that most rental companies don’t cover this. You might want to purchase extra insurance through another party. As always, don’t forget to read the small print of your rental contract before you commit to any agreement.

Is it easy to drive in Oman?

Oman generally has great roads throughout the country, which makes driving easy and convenient. But before you rent a car in Oman, it’s good to get familiar with the traffic rules and customs.

tips on how to rent a car in oman

Roads & Speed limits

The quality of the roads in Oman is excellent, with most roads being asphalt-covered, even in remote areas. Driving standards are great, and fuel is considerably more affordable than in Europe(link). Most of your driving will happen on highways with a speed limit of 120 km/h. On open roads in the country, you can drive up to 90 km/h.

Renting a Car in Oman in 2024: All you need to know

In urban areas, the speed limit is between 40 – 80 km/h depending on the size of the settlement. There are often speed bumps and cameras to ensure drivers stick to the speed limit. Always try to keep an eye out for the traffic signs, which have both Arabic and Roman numbers and letters. That means there’s no need to worry about brushing up on your Arabic for your road trip through Oman!

Tip: Routes can be very long and straight in Oman, especially on the highways. It’s easy to become tired, so make sure to stop frequently to rest and stretch and bring enough water and food for your journey.

Traffic in Oman

Since the country is so vast, you’ll likely only find traffic in the cities. In Muscat, traffic is heavy at rush hour and around the Mutrah Souk. Try to avoid these times and areas as it can take a long time to get anywhere. If you do end up in heavy traffic in Oman, stay calm and don’t run any red lights as this is heavily punishable (1300 USD!).

Tip: Driving after dark? Try to be extra alert. Many roads don’t have any street lighting, and animals are known to wander around during these hours.

Monsoon season

If you’re traveling during the monsoon season, which runs from June to early September, there’s a chance of heavy rains. Flash flooding is frequent in Oman, so be careful when driving during or after rainfall. There are signs next to the road indicating a flood area, with one sign at the start and one at the end. You’ll find these more on lower routes and long flat landscapes.

Note: In case of an accident, drivers should call 9999 , which is the local police phone and emergency number. If you’re involved in a minor accident, you don’t have to call but will have to follow the procedures set out on the ROP website. Check with your rental company in Oman if there’s a Minor Road Traffic Accident form in your car, which you’ll need if this situation occurs.

Is it safe to drive in Oman?

Driving in Oman is safe and easy. In general, Oman is quite a safe country with low crime rates, especially involving foreigners. Overall, the roads are in good condition, there are great driving standards, and there’s generally no traffic.

Do I need a 4×4 vehicle in Oman?

Much of Oman is accessible with a regular car, and you can reach the most popular tourist sites without needing a 4×4 vehicle. However, driving a 4×4 does allow for more comfort and gives you more options to explore. Countless natural wonders, magical deserts, and fascinating abandoned towns lie in the more rugged territory. Especially if you’re planning on driving in sandy areas like the Wahiba Sands or through the mountain ranges, a four-wheel drive is needed.

rent a car in oman desert

To drive in the Wahiba Sands desert, you may need to slightly deflate your tires to get across the sandy landscape (don’t forget to inflate them again once you’re out of the desert). It is highly recommended to arrange a local guide to explore this area of Oman, as there is a risk of getting lost. Know that to get to the desert camps; most camps also offer a pickup service!

Off-roading can be a highlight of driving in Oman, navigating your way through the winding roads in the mountains and next to beautiful canyons. These places will always have police checkpoints and only permit entry if you’re driving a 4×4.

Tip: When you plan on off-roading, always travel in convoy. Bring enough water and a mobile phone, and leave a copy of your travel plans with friends or family. Furthermore, check with the rental agency if you’re insured and otherwise purchase insurance through a third party.

Top tips for renting a car in Oman

1. inspect your vehicle and contract upon pickup. .

Upon pickup, inspect your rental car thoroughly before starting on your journey. Do a walk around and try to log any existing damages on a video. To guarantee that you don’t get charged for any of these when returning your rental car, you must have some ‘proof’. Make sure to point them out to the rental agency as well. Do the same with the inside of the car, check whether you’ve got a full tank of gas, and you’re ready to go!

Tip: Always read the fine print of your rental contract. For example, Oman car rental companies often specify a kilometer limit per day that you’re allowed to drive.

oman visit car insurance

2. Don’t worry about parking.

Parking in Oman is pretty easy, as there’s a lot of space, and it’s typically free of charge. In Muscat, however, they’ve recently implemented some paid-parking zones indicated by a sign at the entrance. At some sites outside the larger urban areas, such as Wadi Shab, you might have to park a bit further away and walk or take a taxi to get to the site.

Note: Parking in front of public buildings in Oman is prohibited.

3. Getting gas is efficient.

Driving on the roads in Oman can take a long time, requiring you to fill up your gas tank on the way. Fuel is very affordable and subsidized in Oman, meaning it doesn’t differ across the three gas station chains in the country. One liter of gas costs about 0.239 OMR / 0.62 USD (2,35 USD per gallon), and you’ll likely need gasoline, as diesel cars are less common. Note that the color of the nozzle differs across gas stations.

You won’t have to get gas yourself when you enter a gas station. Instead, an attendant will be there to do the fuelling for you. All you need to do is let him know which fuel you need and how much, and then pay him on the spot with cash. Despite credit cards being widely accepted in Oman, it’s best to bring cash to the gas station.

rent a car in oman restaurant

Not sure which type of fuel your car needs? Check this with your rental company in Oman when picking up the car. Otherwise, there’ll sometimes be a sticker in the car indicating what fuel it needs. The car key, dashboard, or fuel door is where you can usually find this.

Tip: Use a SIM card and the Waze App or Google offline maps for navigating in Oman. This way, you’ll always be able to spot a gas station on your route, too!

4. Wild camping is allowed.

Camping is allowed in Oman, meaning you can sleep under the stars, on the sandflats, in the desert, or between mountains. Whether a tent or your rental car, you can choose wherever you want to sleep. If the forecast is calling for rain, stay away from the wadis and lower-leveled landscapes to avoid potential flooding.

How much does a car rental in Oman cost?

Renting a car in Oman can be relatively cheap by international standards, with an average of 30 – 40 USD a day for an economy car. If you’re planning on offroading and wild camping, you’ll need to get a four-wheel drive vehicle. A 4×4 is a bit more expensive and can cost you up to 70 USD a day, but it’s well worth it, especially if you’re able to split the costs.

rent a car in oman nature

One-way rentals are more expensive than dropping the rental car off where you picked it up. Despite the potential flexibility of dropping your car off in another location, planning your itinerary for Oman in a loop has benefits. This way, you’ll be able to see much more of the country and save on extra costs, specifically due to the affordable fuel in Oman.

Note: If you want to travel across the borders from Oman into the neighboring countries, check with your rental agency beforehand if you can do this. Traveling to Yemen or Saudi Arabia is typically prohibited, but crossing into the UAE or Dubai can be arranged with some rental companies.

Where do I rent a car in Oman?

You will need a car to discover remarkable mosques, beautiful hiking paths, or a starry night in the desert at your own pace. Muscat International Airport is the best place to pick up a rental car in Oman.

Whether you book the rental car online or in the office, do your research to see which company has the best rates. You can use a comparison site or an online agency to find the best deal. The peak season in Oman falls between October and March, and booking your car well in advance is worth it to secure availability.

Going to Oman from the UAE by road? Visa requirements, documents, car insurance and costs explained

Living in uae.

Planning to go on a road trip to Oman? Here’s all you need to prepare ahead of time

Waterfall Salalah

Dubai: A relaxing road trip to Oman not only sounds like a good idea, but is also affordable compared to a flight to any other destination.

Luckily, for UAE expatriates and other nationalities residing in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, they are eligible for a visa on arrival, and going through the border checkpoint is quite an easy process – if you are aware of all the rules.

So, to make sure you do not face any hiccups on your road trip, here is all you need to know about the visa and car insurance requirements for driving to Oman.

Visa requirements for UAE residents travelling to Oman by road

“You do not need to apply for a visa in advance. UAE residents can get a visa on arrival stamped on their passport, and this allows for a stay of 14 days in Oman,” Latheef MC, visa consultant at Dubai-based travel agency, Anisha Travel and Tourism, said.

If you are planning to stay for longer than that, then you must apply for an eVisa in advance, which would allow you to stay in Oman for up to 30 days .

However, according to Oman’s eVisa platform it normally takes at least four to five working days for the visa to be approved. If you are going for a shorter break, you can apply for a 14-day visa on arrival at the UAE-Oman border.

Additionally, he stated that there are certain nationalities that are allowed to enter Oman visa free  through the border. However, it is important to check with the Oman Embassy or call the Royal Oman Police (ROP) contact centre – +968 2284820 to find if you are eligible for visa-free travel.

UAE residents can get a visa on arrival stamped on their passport, and this allows for a stay of 14 days in Oman. - Latheef MC, visa consultant at Dubai-based travel agency, Anisha Travel and Tourism

• Visa on arrival fee – 5 OMR (Dh47) . • Exit fee – Dh35 (this needs to be paid when you are exiting the UAE border). • Motor insurance (if your existing insurance does not cover driving in Oman) – Dh106 or higher, depending on the coverage.

Documents required

• Valid Emirates ID. • Passport with at least six months validity.

How to enter Oman from the UAE by road - five border crossings to know

Border crossing points for Oman from UAE

1. Al Darah border post

Route Ell, through Ras Al Khaimah, connects UAE residents to the northern most region of Oman - the Khasab area of Musandam, which is a governerate of Oman. Musandam is an exclave of Oman, separated from the rest of Oman by areas of the UAE. It is popular among tourists because of its boat cruises that offer the chance to sight dolphins, snorkeling and off-roading in the Hajar mountain range.

Musandam, Oman

2.UAE/Oman Dibba border post

Route E99, through Fujairah, connects UAE residents to the south of Musandam, to the areas of Dibba and Zaghi.

3.Khatmat Milaha border post

If you drive along Route E99 in the other direction through Fujairah, it will connect you to the northern part of Oman, opening up the cities of Sohar and Muscat.

4.Hatta Crossing/Al Wajajah border post

Along the borders of UAE and Oman, the next crossing is the Al Wajajah Crossing, which you can reach by driving down Route E44. This is another route you can take if you wish to access the capital Muscat or wish to explore the northern areas of the country.

5.Mezyad border post

Another border crossing through Al Ain is the Mezyad border post. When you are on route E40, take the exit for Zayed Bin Sultan Street, to reach the border crossing.

This border crossing connects you to the southern part of Oman, including Salalah, which is a popular destination during the summer months. This is because from June to September this area experiences monsoon, as Oman marks the Khareef/monsoon season.

What to do when you arrive at the Oman border

Step 1: pay exit fee.

When driving to Oman, you would first be crossing the UAE border post, where you would need to pay an exit fee of Dh35, according to Latheef.

Step 2: Get the visa stamped on your passport

“Next, when you are proceeding to the Oman border, you will need to park the car and enter the immigration section, where the visa will be issued and the passport will be stamped,” MC said.

Step 3: Apply for motor insurance for Oman, if you don’t already have one

Before you decide to travel, contact your insurance provider to find out if your policy includes Oman coverage.

“Major insurance companies in the UAE offer Oman coverage for free along with their comprehensive cover,” Hitesh Motwani, the Chief Marketing Officer at InsuranceMarket.ae, said.

In case your current motor insurance does not cover you for driving in Oman, you can purchase a policy at the border. Motor insurance for Oman is also referred ‘Orange Card’.

“The ‘Orange Card’ can also be purchased at the border, but this is limited to ‘third party cover’ only. In case of an accident, your car will not be covered,” he explained.

The ‘Orange Card’ can also be purchased at the border, but this is limited to ‘third party cover’ only. In case of an accident, your car will not be covered. - Hitesh Motwani, the Chief Marketing Officer at InsuranceMarket.ae

According to Latheef, when purchasing the insurance policy at the border, the minimum duration of the policy that you can purchase is for five days, which costs approximately Dh106.

“Most vehicles in the UAE have GCC insurance coverage. If not, you can go to one of the self-service kiosks and purchase car insurance with at least five days coverage. This costs around Dh106,” he added.

Step 4: Undergo car inspection

After the whole process is complete, the car will undergo a short inspection by the customs officers at the border, after which you will be able to enter Oman.

How do i get a quote from the oman insurance company.

Visit their online portal for individuals where you can get a quote, retrieve a quote you have previously been given, and renew your current motor insurance.

What does GAP insurance cover?

Both Premier Cover and InsureMyTesla from Oman Insurance include GAP insurance coverage. This is an acronym that stands for Guaranteed Asset Protection; it protects car owners when their standard insurance payout, which is known as ‘total loss payment’, does not cover the full value of the car.

GAP covers motorists who have bought a new car, because a great deal of the value of the vehicle is lost within the first few months, up to a year, of ownership. This means that if the car is stolen or written off in those first months, the owner will still be paid the full value of the car and not just, for instance, 60% which would usually be paid out in a ‘total loss payment’.

Do I have to make a claim if it is not my fault?

If you have been involved in an accident and it is not your fault, you do not have to pay to make a claim. However, if it was your fault, then you have to pay the excess.

I am moving to a different emirate, will I still be covered?

Contact Oman Insurance and they will carry out the necessary paperwork to make sure you are still covered.

Are overseas visitors covered on the comprehensive insurance package?

Yes, as long as they have a valid driving license and all the relevant permissions from the local traffic department.

Hot Oceans Worsened Dubai’s Dramatic Flooding, Scientists Say

An international team of researchers found that heavy rains had intensified in the region, though they couldn’t say for sure how much climate change was responsible.

Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions stunned the world this month. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.

The downpours weren’t a total surprise — forecasters had anticipated the storms several days earlier and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual.

Here’s what to know.

Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.

On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers. These rains often come during El Niño conditions like the ones the world is experiencing now.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on April 16 was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . And parts of the nation had already experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms in March.

Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.

Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.

Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.

But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every part of the globe.

In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.

Hot oceans are a big factor.

An international team of scientists has made a first attempt at estimating the extent to which climate change may have contributed to April’s storms. The researchers didn’t manage to pin down the connection precisely, though in their analysis, they did highlight one known driver of heavy rain in the region: above-normal ocean temperatures.

Large parts of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans have been hotter than usual recently, in part because of El Niño and other natural weather cycles, and in part because of human-induced warming .

When looking only at El Niño years, the scientists estimated that storm events as infrequent as this month’s delivered 10 percent to 40 percent more rain to the region than they would in a world that hadn’t been warmed by human activities. They cautioned, however, that these estimates were highly uncertain.

“Rainfall, in general, is getting more extreme,” said Mansour Almazroui, a climate scientist at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and one of the researchers who contributed to the analysis.

The analysis was conducted by scientists affiliated with World Weather Attribution, a research collaboration that studies extreme weather events shortly after they occur. Their findings about this month’s rains haven’t yet been peer reviewed, but are based on standardized methods .

The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.

The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.

Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried around the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.

Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this month’s storms would require detailed study.

“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.

An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.

Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t have further comment.

Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.

Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.

Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.

One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half-century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.

Understanding travel insurance for seniors

Before diving into the specifics, it's essential to understand what travel insurance is and why it's particularly important for senior travelers. The best travel insurance offers financial protection against unexpected events affecting your trip, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage.

Types of coverage

  • Medical Coverage: Ensures your medical expenses are covered in case of illness or injury.
  • Trip Cancellation/Interruption Coverage: Provides reimbursement if your trip is canceled or cut short due to unforeseen events.
  • Baggage Coverage: Covers loss, damage, or theft of personal items during your trip.

Benefits of travel insurance for seniors

  • Peace of Mind: Knowing you're covered in case of emergencies can make your travel stress-free.
  • Financial Protection: Shields you from potentially overwhelming medical costs and trip cancellations fees.
  • Assistance Services: Many plans offer 24/7 assistance services, providing help whenever and wherever you need it.

Making the most of your plan

After choosing a plan, it's crucial to understand your policy fully and know what services are available to you in case of an emergency.

Understanding your policy

  • Read the fine print and understand the claims process to avoid surprises.

Emergency assistance services

  • Familiarize yourself with the emergency assistance services offered by your plan and keep all necessary contact information handy.

How to pick senior travel insurance

It's wise to compare several different travel insurance policies for the best coverage and pricing, as premiums vary widely between insurers and depend on factors like your age and travel destination.

That said, some of the more essential coverages to look for if you're a senior citizen include:

  • Travel medical coverage - This coverage will pay for your medical bills outside the US.
  • Medical evacuation coverage - If you're injured or become sick while traveling, this coverage will transport you to the nearest hospital or even back home if your condition necessitates it.
  • Preexisting conditions - Coverage for known health conditions. You'll need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time period from when you book your trip to qualify for a preexisting condition waiver .
  • Cancel for any reason (CFAR) - The name says it all! It'll cost extra and you'll need to purchase insurance early, but it's the most comprehensive trip cancellation coverage you can get. Note that CFAR insurance usually only covers up to 75% of your trip fees.
  • Trip cancellation insurance - This coverage provides reimbursement for your prepaid and nonrefundable costs if you cannot make your trip due to an unforeseen event.
  • Baggage delay insurance - This coverage will reimburse you for essentials like toiletries and clothes if your bags are delayed.
  • Lost luggage insurance - This coverage will reimburse you up to a specified amount if your bags get lost en route.

Of these, the most critical to note are whether or not your policy covers preexisting conditions and the limits for travel medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation.

Some insurance companies offer a waiver that will cover preexisting conditions. You'll have to follow the requirements for adding a waiver to your policy, like insuring the entire cost of your trip. Or purchase the policy within a specific time after making your first trip deposit payments.

You'll also want to find a policy with high maximum limits for travel medical and emergency medical evacuation coverage. These types of expenses can be substantial, so you want to have appropriate coverage.

When comparing senior travel insurance options, we looked at the following factors to evaluate each travel insurance provider:

  • Coverage limits: We looked at each travel insurance company's coverage amounts for benefits like medical emergencies and trip cancellation.
  • Flexibility: We looked at how customizable a policy is, so you can choose what your travel insurance policy covers .
  • Coverage for preexisting conditions: Preexisting conditions are one of the more critical factors for travel insurance for senior citizens, so we looked at travel insurance companies that offer the best coverage for preexisting conditions.
  • Price: We compared travel insurance providers offering reasonable basic and comprehensive coverage rates.
  • Benefits geared towards seniors: We compared travel insurance companies that offer solid coverage for senior citizens, like medical evacuation, COVID-19 coverage, and trip cancellation.

You can read more about our insurance rating methodology here.

Seniors should look for travel insurance policies that offer comprehensive medical coverage, including for preexisting conditions and emergency medical evacuation. They should also consider policies with higher coverage limits to ensure adequate protection. Additionally, seniors should seek travel insurance plans that provide 24/7 assistance services, as well as coverage for trip cancellations, interruptions, and baggage protection.

The cost of senior travel insurance coverage can vary depending on your age, overall health, state of residence, travel destination, and length of your trip. However, assuming all other factors are the same, you'll pay more for travel insurance at 70 than at 30.

All travel insurance companies, except World Nomads, included in this guide offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions as long as you buy your policy within the qualifying period from when you placed your trip deposit.

Allianz is the best travel insurance for seniors due to its wide array of medical coverages and emergency medical transport. Allianz also offers multi-trip insurance policies , which could make sense for seniors who travel frequently.

In some instances, travel insurance companies will have age eligibility restrictions, often only insuring people 80 years old and younger.

Information about the Signify Business Cash℠ Card by Wells Fargo has been collected independently by Select and has not been reviewed or provided by the issuer of the card prior to publication.

The Wells Fargo Signify Business Cash Card s tands out in the business cash-back card space by giving unlimited cash rewards without charging an annual fee. It gets even better if you also have a consumer Wells Fargo credit card that unlocks access to the new Wells Fargo travel partners, such as the no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card (see rates and fees ) or the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card .

Wells Fargo confirmed to CNBC Select that Signify Business Cash cardholders can combine their cash rewards with an eligible Wells Fargo consumer card and then take advantage of the consumer card's redemption options. Using this strategy to transfer rewards to Wells Fargo's travel partners can greatly boost the value you receive. For example, transferring 34,000 points to Iberia is enough to book a one-way off-peak business-class flight from a handful of U.S. cities (Boston, New York, etc.) to Spain, a flight that typically costs thousands of dollars.

Given that those 34,000 points would net you only $340 when redeemed as cash, you can see how much more value you get by transferring to travel partners. Other transfer options include Choice Hotels, Air France/KLM, British Airways, Avianca and Aer Lingus.

New Signify Business Cash Card members also receive an intro 0% APR on purchases for 12 months from account opening, after that a variable 18.49% to 26.49% APR applies. You can also enroll for a Priority Pass membership for airport lounge access , however, you don't get free access and will pay a per-visit fee.

Its welcome offer is a $500 statement credit you earn after spending $8,000 in purchases on your card in the first three months after account opening. The Wells Fargo Signify Business Cash card earns an unlimited 2% in cash rewards and its bonus has the same value as the Blue Business Cash (even though the Wells Fargo card has a smaller spending requirement) .

The Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card earns 5% cash back on Lyft rides (through March 2025) and 1.5% cash back on all other purchases. This makes the Signify Business Cash more rewarding for most spending. The Ink Business Unlimited has a larger welcome bonus, but over the long haul, the Signify Business Cash Card's increased cash rate will win out.

You can move the cash-back rewards you earn with the Ink Business Unlimited to a Chase credit card that allows point transfers, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card . While the Signify Business Cash offers the same path to transferring cash rewards, Wells Fargo's travel rewards program is new and it has a far less robust list of transfer partners. If you can maximize Chase's travel partners , it's possible to squeeze more value out of the Ink Business Unlimited despite its slightly lower cash-back rate.

Bottom line

Wells Fargo isn't messing around with the new Signify Business Cash Credit card, which instantly becomes one of the best no-annual-fee business credit cards . It offers 2% cash rewards on all purchases with no caps, a valuable welcome bonus and no annual fee. Unless your business can benefit from specific bonus spending categories or you want free airport lounge access, it's hard to go wrong with this card.
