One vision. One wine.

“Wine to me is passion. It's family and friends. It's warmth of heart and generosity of spirit.”

Robert Mondavi's signature

The essence of time is expressed in Opus One by the character of each vintage. Place, often defined as terroir, represents the geography, the climate and the essential human element which is captured in the wine’s balance between power and finesse, structure and texture.

“Wine is born, then it lives. But it never dies, in man it lives on.”

Price Range For Tasting

There are so many beautiful wineries in Napa , but Opus One Winery is a must-visit wine experience. Opus One wines are some of the most highly sought-after among collectors of California Bordeaux blends, and for good reason. The fruit for these wines is sourced from some of the region’s best vineyards, including the legendary To Kalon.

What was interesting about this visit is that we were able to go to both Opus One (founded in part by Robert Mondavi), and, on the same trip, experience the brand new Robert Mondavi Arch and Tower tasting room in downtown Napa to see how the two Mondavi brands compare.

What is Opus One?

Opus One Winery produces Bordeaux blends in Napa Valley, and the brand is one of the most well known and respected wine brands in Napa Valley. When the founders of Opus One, Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, created the winery, they sought out to make a Napa Valley version of Bordeaux first growth wine.

News of a collaboration between two of the wine industry’s best vintners was the talk of the town when the project started in 1980. Napa Valley was still a young, undeveloped wine region compared to the Old World wines of France, so when wine lovers got word that someone like Rothschild was making a bet on California, everyone took notice.

Who owns Opus One?

Opus One Winery started as a partnership between Napa Valley legend Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, owner of the world-famous Château Mouton Rothschild . When Robert Mondavi was acquired by Constellation Brands, they became 50% owners of Opus One. The remaining share of the company belongs to Baron Philippe de Rothschild.

The Estate: A Unique Experience in Napa

Napa is home to many over-the-top wineries, but the Opus One estate stands alone when it comes to art, architecture, and an overall feeling of luxury. The winery is known for its jaw-droppingly beautiful neoclassical design. Just take a look at our pictures from the tour.

From the spiral staircase, to the atrium entrance, everything about the design here feels like you’re in a centuries’ old European museum. The grounds are truly a masterpiece inside and out even though the winery has outstanding vineyard views, the views, while exceptional, are almost pale in comparison to the winery and tasting room design.

Interesting Facts About Opus One Winery

  • From an aerial view, the long driveway and the winery building form the shape of a wine glass!
  • The name Opus One is actually the winery’s second name. When the brand launched in 1980, it was called Napamédoc, a reference to the French-American partnership.
  • Only two wines are produced: the vintage wines, which are Bordeaux blends crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, and a second label called Overture.
  • Precision in winemaking is everything: winemaker Michael Silacci uses a custom built optical sorter that can analyze the grapes’ size, shape, and ripeness level (the color).

Our Experience

Our group consisted of six guests, which means we had to call the winery to make the reservation, rather than making it online. The maximum number of guests per online tasting reservation is four.

A good tour guide can make or break a wine-tasting experience, and we were thrilled with Maël Renault, the Opus One Winery Ambassador with whom we were paired. Maël recently moved from France to Napa to work at Opus One, so his insights into the wine were fascinating. He provided an educational presentation during the tour and answered all of our questions about the wines and beautiful architecture of the building.

One of the most unique features of the tour was a stop by the winery’s lab, where the barrel samples are tested and tasted until just the right blend is reached. Seeing this was a first for us, and we appreciated how transparent they are with the winemaking practices.

How to Visit Opus One Winery

Opus One offers by-appointment tastings, and two unique wine experiences:

The Opus One Experience, $200 per person

  • 90-minute tasting of library wines from the collectors’ list, hosted an Estate Ambassador
  • Two library vintages, alongside our current vintage
  • A personalized tour of the winery

Courtyard Experience, $125 per person

  • 60-minute self-guided, side-by-side tasting of two vintages of Opus One alongside Overture, the winery’s non-vintage blend.
  • A dedicated host is available to share the history of the winery, vineyards, and our winemaking practices.
  • Opus One makes planning your appointment easy. You can reserve your tasting appointment up to three months in advance. For the most availability, try checking the website at the first of the month when reservations are released.
  • Be sure to bring your comfortable shoes for this winery tour, as it’s fairly comprehensive and includes quite a bit of walking.
  • If you have more than 4 guests in your group, you will need to call the winery to make a reservation, rather than making one online.

 Final Thoughts

Going to a wine tasting at Opus One is pricey, but it’s totally worth it. Everything about our wine-tasting experience at Opus One was exceptional. The tour was well done, and most importantly, the wine was superb.

How many cases of wine does Opus One produce?

Opus One produces 25,000 cases of wine a year, making it a small production Napa Valley winery. Demand for these bottles constantly outstrips supply, and for a time during the 1990s, Opus One wines were the cult wine to have in your cellar.

How much is Opus One wine?

When bottles of Opus One are released, they cost around $350 – that’s per bottle! On the surface, this may sound like sticker shock, but when you compare these wines to other collectible Napa wines like Harlan are roughly $800 per bottle on release.

The Iconic Opus One, a must-visit winery in the heart of Napa Valley

by Napa Reserva · Published June 24, 2014 · Updated December 16, 2014

The History

“Opus” is a Latin word meaning an artistic composition by a well-established artist.  If the taste of a Napa Valley wine could be compared to the sound of a musical masterpiece, that wine would be Opus One.  But it hasn’t always been called Opus One.

Not too long ago, California wines like the rest of the country were much lower in quality.  Mostly made for large consumption, jug wines and cheap labels plagued the land.  Along came Robert Mondavi, many thought he was out of his mind when he attempted to bring higher quality into California wines several decades ago.   For lack of a better word, Mr. Mondavi successfully revolutionized the California wine landscape, elevating it to world-class status in just a few decades.

On the other side of the globe, requiring little introduction, major wine region of Bordeaux, France has always been known for its exquisite quality wine, claiming among the most expensive in the world.   The district of Medoc is home to a powerhouse of Chateau Mouton Rothschild.  The person in charge of its operation started his wine career at the tender age of 20, Mr. Baron Philippe de Rothschild.

Opus one saw its first harvest in 1979, a collaboration of passion between Mr. Mondavi from Napa Valley and Mr. Baron Philippe from Medoc (Bordeaux France) that continues to thrive decades after.  In the early years, it was called NapaMedoc -signifying the union of two renowned wine regions; the name was later changed to Opus One in 1982.

-view from the 2nd floor terrace, looking out to the entrance-

St. Helena Highway, also known as Highway 29, glides through this world famous wine region one district at a time.  In Oakville, Opus One Winery lies in the heart of Napa Valley.   It is just a stone-throw away from Robert Mondavi Winery; other than grape vines and olives branches on the estate, Opus One looks and feels much more like a Museum than a winery.

Perfectly groomed olive trees line both sides of the entrance driveway; behind them lie impeccable rows of Cabernet Sauvignon, a grape that over the years has been synonymous with Napa Valley.  Straight as an arrow, this entrance driveway spears directly into the Winery and its tasting room, which can be seen at the distance.   Prestige, sophistication, or perhaps both, there’s something about it that gets your attention followed by a moment of silence which prolongs this antagonizing anticipation.  There is something magical waiting in the glass right there at the end of this endless driveway.

(tasting of current 2010 vintage on 2nd floor terrace)

The winery’s courtyard offers plenty of space for tasting and wandering around, but the place to be is up on its 2nd floor terrace.  Its location opens to a 360 degree view of Napa Valley right from the heart of it all -Yountville to the left, Rutherford to the right and staring up through the front entrance finds Mount Veeder.  Nothing beats a nice summer breeze whispering a spell ever so gently in your ears, gradually you’ll find yourself questioning reality.  Then a sip of Opus One seals the deal.  This is day dreaming at its best.

Sparing no expenses, the two partners wanted to make the very best Bordeaux Blend that Napa Valley has to offer. Opus One is made following the old world tradition with modern technology.  There are more than 400 wineries in Napa Valley, each offers an array of wines to choose from, many boast over a dozen different wines.  This practice is unheard of in Bordeaux, France, where Mr. Baron Philippe had his winery.   In Bordeaux, a small chateau usually produces two wines, one with the highest quality grapes and a second tier wine with less desirable crops; and that is exactly what you’ll get at Opus One.

Only the highest quality grapes make their way into the bottle of Opus One.  A recent taste of the 2010 vintage was memorizing.  It showcased vibrant aromas of intense ripe fruit, blackberry, cassis, toasted almond, laced with herbal notes of eucalyptus and a hint of dill.  The nose on this wine promised a taste out of this world.  On the palate, it never disappoints: silky tannins give way to this gracefully structured wine; luscious dark fruit in the mouth followed by intriguing bouquet of herbs, cedar and mocha.  Each taste seems to get better and more complex, lingering finish of sweet oak and toffee reminisces the long endless entrance driveway. Coincidence? probably not!  At $40 per taste, it isn’t cheap, but more than just a drink, Opus One is an experience, an escape, it is music in a glass as each note has you craving for more.

A must do in Napa Valley

A visit to Napa Valley is not complete without a tasting and tour of Opus One. This winery set the bar high for the region when it was first created and it continues to push that bar higher. How many wineries make just one wine…but do so with such care and attention that each vintage is better than the last? Conditions with weather obviously impact production, but here there is such focus on creating the best blend possible each year and it shows in the glass. Touring the winery is fascinating and a bit awe inspiring, too. Views from all angles of the mountains and vineyards are postcard worthy, and the guided tasting is informative and made even more enjoyable by accompanying curated bites. A less involved tasting is also available….but if you are able the pairing experience is really worth your time. We enjoyed three vintages plus a glass of overture (a blend of the blends). My husband and I had first visited Opus in 2017, and this time brought two couples who are good friends. We enjoyed this visit so much more than our first because of the pairings plus our host, Jorge and his wonderful explanations of the production and winery philosophy. It was a great addition to our five days in the valley!

Thank you very much for your kind and detailed review. I will be sure to pass along your comments to Jorge, and I hope that you we have the opportunity to welcome you back to the winery in the near future.

This was our first stop on our wine tour last week. We are from MI so this winery was at the top of our list to try, since we love the wine (when we can splurge on it). The grounds were beautiful, the tasting areas were gorgeous and tasteful (be sure to check out the rooftop terrace), and the people were friendly and informative. Time well spent!

Thank you for your kind words, Jacqueline. We are glad your visit with us was enjoyable, and we hope to host you again in 2023.

In Napa Valley, there is never a shortage of excellent wines to taste. However, due to the limited availability of tasting at Opus One, we would have to say that it was definitely an unparalleled experience. Where else are you going to taste multiple vintages of Opus One (you can add on vintages as well) and have a chance to compare it to Overture? Even if you are partial to either Bourdeaux-style and/or Napa-style wines, you will still enjoy this experience!

Thank you for the kind words, we are glad you had a pleasant experience here at Opus One. We hope to welcome you back to the winery in the near future.

A truly 5 star experience just begins to tell the story of our first visit and wine tasting at Opus One Winery. Our time there was heightened by having Brendon as our specialist. He was very knowledgeable, as you might expect, but in a warm and friendly manner. When we arrived early for our tasting, we were worried after seeing the opulent tasting room and beautifully manicured grounds that the place might be too stuffy and pretentious for us. That was truly not the case. All of the staff were welcoming and acted in a professional manner, but we were made to feel comfortable throughout the experience. Opus One only creates red blend wines and they are very expensive, but worth it because they know how to age and blend delicious and elegant wines. Our favorite was the Opus One 2016. We tasted black cherry and chocolate notes and loved it so much that we purchased a bottle to enjoy on our 40th wedding anniversary next year. We were not fond of the chef's selection (crackers and nuts) to accompany our tasting, but that did not detract from our experience in any way.

Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful review, Sue. We appreciate your feedback, and are happy to hear that you had an enjoyable experience with us. We hope to welcome you back to the winery in the coming year ahead.

This winery is at a whole other level. We love Opus One wines and there is never a bad year. Entering the secured gate, driving past the vineyard and stepping into this grand building already have you in this WOW effect. Our host Mark Chon was professional, informative and friendly. He lead us in this beautiful room for our tasting. Comfy sofa big tables with vineyards view. The canapés pairing with 2012, 2016, and 2018 was perfect. They are so detail with their nice wine glass, brochures, napkins and hot tea. Restrooms are clean spotless with toto toilets. We were lucky to see the wine production. $200 tasting was worth it. This is a MUST GO!!

Thank you very much for your review. We really appreciate your kind words regarding our Partner's Room, as well as the experience. We hope to be able to host you again in 2023.

Fantastic tasting and tour. Host Mark was attentive and answered all of our questions—more importantly, he took the time to learn our names and from where we were visiting. Wines themselves were delicious. Loved that we were there during harvest season. We really loved our visit and would go again if in Napa.

Thank you very much for your review. We hope you will visit the winery in the near future.

Napa Valley: Opus One

I’m mildly obsessed with  robert mondavi  and his family’s story in the napa valley.  the mondavi family  really helped shape what the napa valley wine industry is today by introducing higher quality wine making equipment and techniques to the area. they also put the napa valley on the wine map for the rest of the wine world through strategic marketing programs. (if you haven’t read house of mondavi and robert mondavi’s autobiography i highly suggest it. both books do an excellent job in laying out how the mondavi family helped shape what napa valley is today.).

opus one winery tour napa valley

With that said, the vineyards I really wanted to visit this trip were all tied to the Mondavi family. However, given that the first day we were tasting with some of The Husbands colleagues I couldn’t force my obsession on them, at least not all day.

First stop –  Opus One Robert Mondavi  started this vineyard with Baron Philippe de Rothschild of France (who at the time was owner of Château Mouton Rothschild winery). The two wanted to combine wine making traditions from their families.

Their first vintage was released in 1979.

Opus One  truly sells “ultra premium” wines (and they act like it). Unlike many wineries in the Napa Valley,  Opus One  only focuses on a single wine each year. Although, they also produce Overture, which as our guide told us is made up of the grapes that “didn’t make the cut” for  Opus One .

Opus One  is located directly across the street from the  Robert Mondavi Winery , it’s “sister winery”. You must make a reservation at  Opus One , even for a tasting, which is all we did. You will not be able to do a tasting without a reservation.

In the tasting you get two wines; we tried vintage 2006 and vintage 2007. Tasting fees – $35 per vintage- are higher than most and this is mainly due to them only producing one vintage a year. While the fees are higher, you are poured more than the traditional one-ounce tasting pour. Both the 2006 and 2007 vintages were made up of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cab Franc, Petit Vendot and a touch of Malbec grapes. I preferred the 2007 vintage, which was a great year for wines throughout the Napa Valley. We were not able to taste the Overture (no one can, for sale only) but did purchase a few bottles and it’s amazing. You can only purchase Overture at the winery; you cannot but it online.

opus one winery tour napa valley

When  Robert Mondavi  sold his winery in Dec. 2004 to   Constellation Brands, Inc. , he also sold his shares of  Opus One . The winery is still run by Baron Philippe de Rothschild’s family; Constellation Brands acts more of a silent partner. Something to note, the people who work at Opus One all seem to be French and very proud of their wine and pass this “pride” off as snootiness. Ok, just plane rudeness. It was hard to really appreciate the beauty of the wine with the woman working the tasting being so “nice”. So we took glasses of wine upstairs to the deck to enjoy the views and try to regain appreciation for the wine without our “lovely” French guide.

Exploring Opus One Wine: Perfect Symphony in a Bottle

Opus One Wine

When you think of the finest wines in Napa Valley, Opus One Wine undoubtedly comes to mind. This Napa Valley icon represents the perfect blend of tradition and innovation, creating a symphony in a bottle. The founders’ vision was to create a singular wine in the heart of Napa Valley but even they would be surprised what Opus One means to Napa Valley wine today.

In this article, we’ll explore the rich history, exquisite winemaking process, and opulent experience that has made Opus One a legendary luxury wine now over 40 years old.

History of Opus One

History of Opus One

The founders.

Robert Mondavi, an American winemaking legend, and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, the owner of the prestigious Château Mouton Rothschild in France , were united by a passion for excellence and a desire to elevate California’s wine reputation on the global stage.

De Rothschild’s involvement added instant credibility to this joint venture throughout the wine industry.

The Joint Venture

During the early 1970s, Robert Mondavi (Robert Mondavi Winery) and Baron Philippe de Rothschild met at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the big island of Hawaii. It was during this meeting that they came up with the idea of producing a refined wine that blended the finest viticultural practices of California with the traditional expertise of Bordeaux winemaking.

Their goal was to create a Napa Valley wine that could rival the best European wines, and they were confident that this winery venture would make it a reality.

In an effort to blend old-world and new-world wine styles into “one grand opus”, Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild collaborated on a joint venture that they later named Opus One.

Although the plans for the winery had been in the works since the early 1970s, the partnership was officially announced in 1980.

To establish the joint venture, Mondavi sold 35 acres from his To Kalon Vineyard in the Oakville AVA in 1980 to the new project. This land and its cabernet sauvignon would eventually serve as the foundation for the Opus One winery estate where they still source their fruit forty years later.

After years of tireless preparation, Opus One Winery became official in 1979 and began producing its first vintage which was made at the nearby Robert Mondavi Winery. In 1989 the winery on the Opus One property was finished so every vintage since then has been made at the current property.

The winery’s first release, the 1979 Opus One, was highly acclaimed and helped to establish the winery as one of the top producers of premium wine in California.

1979 Opus One - The First Vintage

The First Vintage

The inaugural vintage of Opus One, the 1979 vintage, was released in 1984 along with the 1980 vintage, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey that would redefine luxury wine and produce a wine that transcends generations.

The winemaking process

The Winemaking Process

The vineyards.

Opus One sources its grapes from over 100 acres of meticulously cultivated estate vineyards, located in the western portion of Napa Valley’s Oakville AVA.

The four parcels that contribute fruit for Opus One wine include two parcels totaling 100 acres within the world-famous To Kalon vineyard and the Ballestra and River parcels, two parcels totaling another 70 acres.

Grapes and Blending

A blend of classic Bordeaux varietals, Opus One is predominantly composed of Cabernet Sauvignon , with smaller portions of Merlot , Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. Each vintage is carefully crafted to reflect the unique character of the growing season and expresses the technical acumen of the winemaker and his team.

During the harvest season, Opus One ensures that the fruit is well taken care of by implementing various precautions, such as delicate hand harvesting and other traditional approaches including native yeast ferments which are a subtle celebration of each harvest.

The winemaking team, led by winemaker Michael Silacci, does its best to continue to improve the winegrowing process by delicately weaving modern techniques and traditional approaches while contributing the essential human element that makes Opus One a special wine.

Opus One Aging in French Oak Barrels

The Aging Process

Following the art of French winemaking, a sign of De Rothschild’s involvement, Opus One wines are aged in French oak barrels for 18 months, followed by an additional 15 months in the bottle before release. This extended aging period allows the wine to develop its signature elegance and complexity and forms the wine’s balance.

There is no question that modern techniques benefit the wine but it is Opus One’s consistent dedication to quality and innovation in winemaking that’s an ongoing testament to the vision and collaboration of its founders.

The Opus One Experience

The Opus One Experience

The Opus One estate is a testament to the founders’ commitment to quality and attention to detail. The architectural masterpiece designed by Scott Johnson houses the winery, tasting rooms, and private event spaces, all surrounded by stunning landscapes and its signature open space.

Tasting Experiences

The Legendary Opus One Napa Valley Winery

Opus One

Before my Opus One Winery Tour & Tasting. I was beyond excited, hard to believe I was finally getting to visit Opus One.

Opus One

The history of Opus One

The story of the unique partnership behind Opus One began in 1970. The Baron Philippe de Rothschild, perhaps the best-known member of the great winemaking family behind Bordeaux’ Chateau Mouton Rothschild, was visiting the United States. Recognizing the untapped potential of the wine industry in California, the Baron travelled to a wholesaler’s convention in Hawaii. While there he was introduced to Robert Mondavi, best known for his work helping put Napa Valley on the map and for his winery, Robert Mondavi. The Baron offered Mondavi a partnershipwhich Mondavi declined as he was preoccupied with establishing the new Robert Mondavi Winery.

Fast forward eight years, when the men would meet again when the Baron invited Robert Mondavi to visit him at his estate in Bordeaux. It was during this visit that the two men would strike a revolutionary agreement. In the span of about one hour’s time the two great winemakers would lay out the framework of their plan; drawing upon the culture and innovations of both families with the singular goal of producing one exceptional wine in the Napa Valley.

Opus One

With the first vinifucation in 1979, Opus One was produced and aged in barrels at the Robert Mondavi Winery under the care of Lucien Sionneau, winemaker at Chateau Mouton Rothschild and Timothy Mondavi, Robert’s son. Over the course of subsequent years the partnership would acquire vineyards, selected a name of Latin origin and agree on a design for a new winery. Production would continue at the Robert Mondavi Winery under joint supervision until the new Opus One winery construction was completed in 1991.

It’s pretty magnificent to walk around especially when you realize the adored, incredibly loved and highly scored Opus One is aged right here in this lower level space.

Cheers to an incredible tasting and tour at Opus One. What a beautiful iconic Napa Valley Vineyard with such unique history both with their California and French roots.  Thank you for having me to experience this spectacular winery and sharing your wines with me.

As if the cellar views were not enough there is also a gorgeous roof terrace you can visit after your tour. We took our last tasting on the tour up and relaxed on a beautiful fall day in Napa. I love it here!
