Cruise payment plans: All you need to know about paying for a cruise

Ashley Kosciolek

You're going on a cruise! You've spent time researching and narrowing down your destination, ship and sailing dates, and now it's time to book. But what can you expect in terms of cruise payments? What's the best way to pay for a cruise? Will you have to cough up the full fare upfront, or can you put a cruise on layaway?

Here, I'll answer those questions by discussing cruise payment schedules, different methods of paying for a cruise and the pros and cons of paying in full versus putting down a deposit and paying the rest later.

Note: Payment methods and schedules vary by cruise line and booking outlet. Not all options are offered by all lines or via all booking methods. Check with your cruise line or booking outlet for availability before making a reservation.

How to pay for a cruise

payment plan on cruises

You can pay for your voyage in multiple ways. Most passengers put the charges on a credit card , which is often the quickest and most convenient method. Additionally, you can use gift cards (either cruise line-specific or those from major credit card issuers that aren't tied to a specific retailer), future cruise credits from your cruise line or even cash if you book in person through a travel agent .

Other options include payment by electronic check, PayPal or Apple Pay (depending on how you book) or points and miles on a third-party platform . You can also redeem free cruise certificates from cruise lines that award them for things like casino play , reaching a high loyalty status tier, winning high-stakes bingo or even cruises gone wrong .

You can choose to pay in full at the time of booking, which could earn you additional perks or savings, or make an initial cruise deposit with subsequent payments until anywhere from two to three months before your sailing date.

Specific financing and payment plan options vary by cruise line. For example, Carnival Cruise Line uses EasyPay to allow interest-free autopayments to be charged to you at regular intervals in order to pay off your cruise before you set sail. Princess Cruises' and Holland America's EZpay program offers a similar interest-free setup.

Carnival also offers Uplift as an option. Although some passengers are approved for no down payment and/or 0% interest, interest rates will apply for other cruisers, and under the program, your voyage doesn't have to be completely paid off before your embarkation date. Royal Caribbean allows passengers to finance their cruises using Affirm, with both interest-free and simple-interest options available. Some lines also allow payments through the popular payment app Klarna, which has different payment options, both with and without interest. (Check with your cruise line for details on its specific payment plans.)

Here are the pros and cons of paying over two different time periods.

Paying all at once

If you have the funds to pay for the entire amount of your sailing right away, feel free. It means you won't have to remember to make additional payments. Plus, as an incentive, some cruise lines extend additional perks or discounts to entice travelers to lock in their plans at the time of booking.

For example, wave season deals often include incentives to pay in full. At the time of publication, Emerald Cruises was discounting cruise fares by thousands of dollars for anyone paying in full at the time of booking. Scenic was allowing passengers to choose from additional savings, free airfare or free pre- or post-cruise land tours for paying in full right away. Silversea was slashing fares for pay-upfront voyages by 10%-20%.

The drawback, however, is that you part with a lot of money upfront if you decide to pay immediately. For many cruisers who book a year or more ahead of time, that money could be more lucrative sitting in a bank account that earns interest instead of providing an interest-free loan to a cruise line.

Paying incrementally, with an initial minimum deposit

payment plan on cruises

Alternatively, you can pay a deposit — a portion of the cruise fare for each person on your reservation — to lock in your cabin. Then, in the months leading up to your sailing, you'll make additional payments, according to your cruise line's payment schedule, until you no longer owe anything. If you don't pay off the remaining balance by the final payment date — usually two to three months before embarkation day — the cruise line will cancel your reservation, and you won't be allowed to sail.

Incremental payments are a better choice if you're unsure whether you can or want to sail but want to lock in an attractive fare or snag a cabin on a new ship or unusual itinerary while you decide. If you pay off your cruise early, you can get your money back (except for certain discounted fares and nonrefundable deposits) should you cancel before the final payment deadline. However, it can be a hassle to go through the refund process and wait for the cruise line to return your funds.

Another obvious draw of this method is that it costs less upfront. You can pay over time instead of draining your savings or putting the full amount on a credit card and then incurring fees if you can't pay off your card in full.

Generally, there is no interest or penalty for paying over time if you go the deposit route, so in most cases you won't be charged more if you opt for a payment plan. Plus, you can always pay the balance off early or in larger amounts than are required by your cruise line.

One drawback is that you'll have to remember to make additional payments on time to avoid cancellation of your reservation. Plus, you might not be able to take advantage of a cruise line's cheapest fares if you're not willing to pay in full at the time of booking.

Note that if you book a last-minute cruise after the final payment date (typically, two or three months prior to sailing), you must pay in full; there is no deposit option.

How much is a cruise deposit?

payment plan on cruises

The amount of the deposit required varies by cruise line, but typically you can expect to shell out a couple hundred dollars per person to reserve a cabin with most major cruise lines. It's based on several factors, including the length of the sailing, the overall cost of the voyage, the type of accommodations booked and whether or not the line is running a promotion. Sometimes, as a booking incentive, lines will waive deposits completely or heavily discount them.

At the time of publication, as part of their wave season promotions , Carnival Cruise Line and Costa Cruises were touting deposits as low as $50 per person, while Princess Cruises was offering them for $100 per person. Disney Cruise Line also slashed its required deposits by half — a big deal for a line that rarely offers discounts. Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line and UnCruise Adventures also were offering deposit reductions.

The next section outlines the specific deposit amounts for the most popular cruise lines.

Cruise payment schedules

Below are the payment schedules and deposit amounts for each of the "big eight" cruise lines.

Note: Deposits are per person and refundable prior to the cruise line's final payment deadline, unless otherwise indicated. For cruises booked after the final payment deadline has passed, payment is required in full at the time of booking.

Carnival cruise payment schedule

For most sailings, Carnival requires a deposit of $100 per person for two- to three-day sailings, $150 for four- and five-day sailings and $250 for six- to nine-day sailings. Longer cruises and voyages to Alaska, Europe and the Panama Canal, as well as ocean crossings, require a deposit of $400 per person.

Deposits for Carnival bookings are generally nonrefundable unless cruisers specifically purchase fully refundable fares.

Final payment is required either 76 or 91 days from the sailing date, depending on the destination, cabin type and length of cruise booked.

See Carnival's website for more information.

Celebrity cruise payment schedule

For Sky Suite cabins and lower, Celebrity charges $100 per person for cruises up to five nights, $250 for six to eight nights and $450 for voyages of nine nights or longer. Those prices double, per person, for Celebrity Suites and above.

For Galapagos sailings, deposits for non-suites at the time of booking are $450 per person; suites are $900 per person.

Deposits for Celebrity bookings are generally nonrefundable at any time unless cruisers specifically purchase fully refundable fares.

For cruises of four nights or fewer, final payment must be made at least 75 days prior to sailing. For voyages of five or more nights, final payment is due at least 90 days in advance.

Galapagos sailings must be settled further in advance, with final payment due anywhere from 120 to 180 days in advance, depending on the ship.

More information can be found on Vacations To Go 's website.

Disney cruise payment schedule

Disney Cruise Line 's fine print states that deposits are determined at the time of booking, so they vary.

For non-suite and non-concierge voyages of five nights or fewer, the line requires final payment 90 days or more prior to embarkation day; for sailings of six nights or longer, payment must be made 120 days or more in advance. For suites and concierge-level accommodations, final payment is due 91 days or more prior to sailing.

You can read more in the line's terms and conditions .

Holland America cruise payment schedule

Holland America 's deposit amounts vary widely, requiring passengers to pay anywhere from $350 to $2,900 per person, depending on the sailing.

For Alaska, Bermuda, Caribbean, Canada/New England, Europe, Mexican Riviera, Panama Canal and long Hawaii voyages, final payment must be made no fewer than 75 days prior to sailing. For all other cruises — including holiday voyages, voyages longer than 30 days and segments of voyages longer than 30 days — full payment must be received at least 90 days before embarkation.

MSC cruise payment schedule

Deposits for MSC Cruises are $99 per adult for voyages of four nights or fewer, $199 for five to 14 nights, $300 for 15 nights or longer and an amount equal to 15% of the overall price for world cruises. Additional deposits are not required for children sailing as the third and fourth passengers in a cabin.

For cruises of four nights or fewer, bookings must be paid in full at least 75 days before the sailing date. Those of five to 14 nights must be paid off 90 days or more ahead of time, and bills for any voyages 15 days or longer must be settled at least 110 days prior to departure. For world cruises, it's 120 days.

You can read more on MSC's website .

Norwegian cruise payment schedule

Deposits for Norwegian Cruise Line bookings vary greatly, ranging from $100 to $5,000 per person, based on cabin or suite type booked and the length of the sailing.

Norwegian's deposits are fully refundable, but all voyages, regardless of length or cabin type, must be paid in full at least 120 days in advance. That's earlier than what other cruise lines require for basic cabin types and standard-length sailings.

To learn more, see the chart on NCL's website .

Princess cruise payment schedule

When you book a Princess cruise, you'll owe a deposit of $100 per person ($200 for suites) for sailings of five days or fewer, $200 ($500 for suites) for voyages of six to nine days or $400 ($800 for suites) for cruises of 10 days or longer. For world cruises, you'll have to pony up 30% of the overall cost of the sailing.

For voyages of five days or fewer, you'll have to pay in full at least 75 days before your vacation. Cruises of six to 24 days require full payment 90 days or more ahead of time, and for world cruises, your bill is due 120 days or more before you set sail.

Check out the breakdown on Princess' website .

Royal Caribbean cruise payment schedule

Deposit amounts vary by sailing and the number of people in each cabin for Royal Caribbean bookings. Generally, passengers can expect to front $200 per stateroom (rather than per person) for sailings of five nights or fewer, $500 per cabin for six- to nine-night voyages and $900 per room for cruises of 10 nights or longer.

Deposits for Royal Caribbean bookings are generally nonrefundable at any time unless cruisers specifically purchase fully refundable fares.

For sailings of four nights or fewer, the final payment is due 75 days or more prior to the embarkation date. For five-night voyages and longer, the cruise line must receive all money no fewer than 120 days from sailing. The deadline for world cruises is at least 180 days prior to departure.

Read more on Royal Caribbean's website in the line's FAQ section .

Bottom line

payment plan on cruises

Travelers have many options when it comes to paying for a cruise. You can pay in full at the time of booking or choose cruise payment plans that allow you to make a deposit for each person in your party and then pay off the balance over time.

Additionally, payment methods may include credit cards, third-party payment systems, gift cards, cruise certificates and cash.

Ultimately, the best way to make cruise payments is whichever one works best for you and your specific circumstances. What matters most is that you pay the cruise line in full by its designated final payment date, so your reservation is confirmed and you can set sail on departure day.

Cruise Payment Plans – Pay for a Cruise Without Breaking the Bank!

Last updated on March 10th, 2024 at 02:04 pm

Let’s face it; Not many of us are rich.

Most of us do not have a stack of cash just waiting to be spent, especially for something like a vacation which would be classified as a luxury purchase.

For the vast majority, there is the reality of student loan debt, mortgage or rent payments, car payments, insurance , credit card debt, and the list goes on.

At the end of each month, you are left wondering where it all went!

After all of your everyday expenses, how in the world are you going to be able to afford a cruise?

If you start budgeting for a cruise well in advance, you will be able to save for your cruise and not have to worry how you will pay for it.

By thinking and planning creatively, you CAN afford to take a cruise without breaking the bank. Here are 4 ways to pay for your cruise with a payment plan or other creative means.

The wonderful thing about cruising in general is that for many, it’s a lower-cost option than a land vacation . On a cruise, once you pay for your cruise fare, your entire time on a ship is already paid for. I recently cruised with someone who didn’t spend a cent on the cruise, other than the cruise fare. You can read about her first cruise here.

Table of Contents

Credit Cards

Without a doubt, most people pay for a cruise via credit card, especially when booking online.

The real question is this; When do you actually PAY for your cruise if you pay via credit card.

Many are diligent about paying their credit card balances in full each month to avoid interest, but is that always feasible when the purchase is $1000, $2000, $3000, or more?

For many, it’s just not feasible to pay this off the next month, however, there are a few smart things you can do.

  • Be realistic about what you can pay each month if you know ahead of time that you can’t pay for all of it at once. Perhaps you can commit to paying down an extra $xxx/month on the balance so that your trip can get paid for relatively fast and you don’t end up paying hundreds of dollars in interest.
  • Take advantage of new credit card offers. Some cards come with travel points when you sign up, others have payment plans when you spend over a certain amount on a vacation, making it easy to pay in installments.
  • Take advantage of travel points already accrued on your credit cards to reduce the amount you need to pay.

Whatever you do, do not book the cruise on your credit card without a reasonable expectation that you can pay for it.

While it may seem like a good idea at the time, you might end up paying for a cruise several years down the road.

Cruise Layaway

Timing your cruise booking just right will allow you to pay interest-free installments. For most cruise lines, full payment must be received about 75 to 90 days before the cruise sets sail. If you want time to pay for your cruise in installments, book early.

For example, if your cruise is $2000, booking one year in advance will give you 9 months to pay, which breaks down to just $222 per month leading up to your final payment date. By the time you set sail, the cruise is already paid for!

Something we have done many times has been to book a cruise at least 6 months in advance and use a travel agency promotion of booking with little or no money down.

If a cruise travel agency has a promotion offering low or no money down, take them up on the offer. Then calculate how much you need to pay each month to have a cruise paid in full by the required date.

Travel Agency Payment Plans for Cruises

A number of travel agencies have started to explore the world of ‘buy now, pay later” for cruises and other travel. Some of the more popular cruise travel agencies, like Expedia Cruises and CruiseDirect have payment plans or financing on travel, including cruises.

The most common way to buy now, pay later on a cruise with these travel agencies is using UpLift.

Cruise Line Financing & Payment Plans

A number of cruise lines will do the math for you and even allow you to choose this method at checkout on their website.

Royal Caribbean offers FlexPay to its travel partners. This program allows 10 automatic payments to be scheduled prior to your cruise, making it easy to pay for your cruise over 10 payments. In order to take advantage of this option, you do need to book through a travel agent.

Carnival for example offers Carnival EasyPay which breaks the cruise down into installments that need to be paid before your cruise.

Princess Cruises now offers EZpay , which is like a layaway plan where your cruise payments are divided into monthly payments that can be paid before you cruise.

Norwegian Cruise Lines , and Virgin Voyages both offer cruise financing through a finance company called UpLift. At checkout, just select UpLift and you can finance your cruise, on approved credit. UpLift will do a “soft inquiry” to determine if your credit rating is sufficient to grant the loan.

Personal Loans or Lines of Credit

Similar to credit cards, lines of credit or personal loans offer a viable way to pay, but just like credit cards, going in with a plan to pay is the best option.

Too many people fall into the trap of buying something on credit and then figuring out how to pay for it later.

Avoid this by going in with both eyes open, knowing that you need some time to pay, you are willing to make installment payments, and knowing that you will pay interest.

A line of credit can be a little more dangerous for those without disciplined budgeting skills because the minimum payments for a line of credit are so low.

A personal loan, on the other hand, will come with a set loan amount, a set interest rate, and a set period of repayment – ie. 12months, 24 months etc.

With a reasonable credit rating, a personal loan can be easily obtained through your bank or other financial institution.

Your Own Savings Plan

It might seem obvious, but the old-fashioned way of paying for items still works.

Talk to anyone born in the 1920’s or 1930’s and you will learn a whole new way of buying. They just did not buy anything, unless they had the money to pay for it!

This generation lived a simple lifestyle and they were proud to live within their means, pay for items in cash and save up money when a large purchase was coming.

They were not caught up in the consumer treadmill that has enveloped the generations that came after.

It’s a simple concept, yet one that so many miss. If you know that in 1 year’s time, you want to take a $3000 cruise, pay yourself $333 into savings each month and watch it grow.

By the time you need to book your cruise (ie. 90 days before it leaves), you will have cash in the bank. No stress, no payments, no interest. It worked for your Grandparents and it can work for you too!

Get the Right Perspective

Cruising does not have to be expensive, you do not have to go into great amounts of debt to take a cruise and you can have an enjoyable vacation without the stress of finances before or after. In a world full of impulsive materialism, you can buck the trend and through careful planning have a wonderful cruise vacation that makes sense financially.

Benefits of Cruise Payment Plans

Enjoy the convenience and flexibility of cruise payment plans, allowing you to easily budget and pay for your dream vacation. The benefits of cruise payment plans are numerous and can greatly enhance your travel experience.

One major advantage is that these plans provide you with the freedom to spread out the cost of your cruise over a period of time, rather than paying for it all upfront. This allows you to manage your finances more effectively and avoid any financial strain. Additionally, cruise payment plans often come with low or even zero-interest rates, saving you money in the long run.

Another benefit is that these plans offer you the option to choose the payment schedule that best suits your needs. Whether you prefer to pay in monthly installments or make a few larger payments, cruise payment plans can accommodate your preferences. This flexibility allows you to plan your finances accordingly and make the necessary adjustments without feeling overwhelmed.

When considering financing a cruise, it’s important to take into account certain factors. Firstly, assess your financial situation and determine how much you can comfortably afford to pay each month. Be realistic and ensure that you can meet the payment obligations without jeopardizing your other financial responsibilities.

Secondly, compare the terms and conditions of different cruise payment plans to find the one that offers the most favorable terms for you. Look for plans that have low interest rates, flexible payment options, and minimal fees.

Lastly, consider the overall cost of the cruise and how long it will take you to pay it off. Take into account any additional expenses such as gratuities, excursions, and onboard spending. By considering these factors, you can make an informed decision and choose a cruise payment plan that best suits your needs and desires.

Different Types of Cruise Financing

When financing a cruise, you have access to various types of cruise financing options. These options can help you make your dream vacation a reality, even if you don’t have all the funds upfront. Here are some cruise loan options and cruise financing tips to consider:

When considering cruise financing, it’s important to compare interest rates, fees, and repayment terms to find the option that best fits your budget and financial goals. Remember to consider your ability to make monthly payments and factor in any additional costs such as travel insurance and onboard expenses. By choosing the right cruise financing option, you can embark on your dream vacation without breaking the bank.

How to Choose the Best Cruise Payment Plan

When choosing the best cruise payment plan, there are several factors to consider.

Firstly, you should look for options that fit within your budget, ensuring that the monthly payments are affordable for you.

Additionally, flexibility in payment terms can be beneficial, allowing you to make adjustments if needed.

Factors for Choosing

To choose the best cruise payment plan, you should carefully consider your budget and payment preferences. Here are some factors to consider and tips for choosing the right plan:

Evaluate your budget: Determine how much you can comfortably afford to pay for your cruise. Look at your income, expenses, and savings to determine the amount you can allocate towards your trip.

Payment flexibility: Look for payment plans that offer flexibility in terms of payment frequency and amounts. Some plans allow you to make smaller monthly payments, while others may require larger lump sum payments.

Interest rates and fees: Compare the interest rates and fees associated with different payment plans. Lower interest rates and minimal fees will help you save money in the long run.

Budget-Friendly Options

Choose a cruise payment plan that offers affordable options for your budget. When selecting a payment plan, it’s important to consider budget-friendly options and affordable alternatives. Look for plans that allow you to spread out your payments over time, making it easier to manage your finances. Some cruise lines offer flexible payment plans that allow you to pay in installments, while others may offer low or no-interest financing options. Take advantage of any discounts or promotions that may be available, such as early booking discounts or special offers for repeat customers. By choosing a cruise payment plan that fits within your budget, you can enjoy the freedom of exploring new destinations and creating unforgettable memories without breaking the bank.

Flexibility in Payment

To ensure you have the most flexibility in payment, consider the various cruise payment plans available. When choosing a cruise payment plan, it’s important to have options that suit your needs and allow you to enjoy the freedom of travel without breaking the bank. Here are three key factors to consider:

Flexible payment options: Look for cruise lines that offer multiple ways to pay, such as credit card payments, installment plans, or even financing options. This allows you to choose the method that works best for your financial situation.

Payment schedule flexibility: Check if the cruise line allows you to customize your payment schedule. Some may offer the option to spread out payments over several months or make smaller payments more frequently.

Late payment policies: Find out what happens if you miss a payment. Look for cruise lines that have lenient late payment policies, as this can provide you with peace of mind and flexibility in case unexpected circumstances arise.

Factors to Consider When Financing a Cruise

When financing a cruise, there are two important factors to consider: interest rates and payment term flexibility.

You should compare the interest rates offered by different financing options to ensure you’re getting the best deal.

Additionally, it’s important to choose a payment plan that offers flexibility in terms of the length of the payment term, so you can find a plan that fits your budget and financial situation.

Interest Rates Comparison

Consider the factors that affect interest rates when financing your cruise. Understanding these factors will help you compare rates and choose the best financing option for your needs. Here are three key factors to consider:

Credit Score: Your credit score plays a significant role in determining the interest rate you’ll be offered. A higher credit score generally means lower interest rates, while a lower score may result in higher rates.

Loan Term: The length of your loan term can also impact the interest rate. Shorter terms often come with lower rates, but they may also mean higher monthly payments. Longer terms may have higher rates, but they can offer more manageable monthly payments.

Down Payment: Making a larger down payment can help you secure a lower interest rate. Lenders often view a larger down payment as a sign of financial stability, reducing the risk and therefore the interest rate.

Payment Term Flexibility

To maximize your cruise financing options, carefully assess the flexibility of the payment terms. When considering financing a cruise, it’s important to find a payment plan that offers flexible payment schedules and installment options. This will allow you to have more freedom in managing your payments and fitting them into your budget.

Look for cruise lines or travel agencies that offer payment plans with a range of options, such as monthly or bi-weekly payments, so you can choose the one that works best for you. Additionally, consider if there are any penalties or fees for changing or canceling your payment schedule.

Pros and Cons of Cruise Financing Options

If you’re considering financing your cruise, there are several pros and cons to keep in mind. While cruise financing options can provide you with the opportunity to take the vacation of your dreams without breaking the bank, they also come with their drawbacks.

Here is a comparison and analysis of the benefits and drawbacks of cruise financing options:

Convenience : Financing your cruise allows you to spread out the cost over time, making it more manageable for your budget. This means that you can enjoy your vacation without worrying about upfront payments.

Flexibility : Cruise financing options offer flexibility in terms of payment plans, allowing you to choose a plan that suits your financial situation. This can give you the freedom to select a payment schedule that works best for you.

Interest Rates : One of the drawbacks of cruise financing is the potential for high interest rates. Depending on your credit score and the terms of the financing, you may end up paying more in the long run due to interest charges.

While cruise financing can provide you with the freedom to take your dream vacation, it’s important to carefully consider the terms and interest rates before committing. By weighing the pros and cons, you can make an informed decision that aligns with your financial goals.

Understanding Cruise Loan Options

When exploring cruise financing options, it’s important to understand the different cruise loan options available to you. Understanding cruise loan options can give you the freedom to choose the best financing plan that suits your needs. One important factor to consider is cruise loan interest rates. These rates can vary depending on your credit score and the loan term. It’s crucial to compare different lenders and their interest rates to find the most affordable option.

There are several benefits of cruise financing. Firstly, it allows you to experience your dream vacation without having to pay the full amount upfront. Instead, you can spread the cost over a period of time, making it more manageable for your budget. Additionally, cruise financing can help you build credit if you make timely payments on your loan. This can have a positive impact on your credit score, making it easier for you to secure future loans at lower interest rates.

Tips for Saving Money on Cruise Payments

By choosing an affordable cruise line or sailing during off-peak seasons, you can find great deals and discounts.

Budget-Friendly Cruise Options

To save money on cruise payments, consider utilizing budget-friendly options. Here are three tips to help you save on your next cruise vacation:

Look for last-minute deals: Cruise lines often offer significant discounts on unsold cabins close to the departure date. By booking last-minute, you can take advantage of these discounted rates and save a substantial amount of money.

Opt for an inside cabin: While it may be tempting to book a balcony or oceanview cabin, opting for an inside cabin can save you a significant amount of money. You’ll still get to enjoy all the onboard amenities and activities while keeping your expenses in check.

Consider a shorter cruise: Instead of booking a week-long cruise, consider a shorter itinerary. Weekend cruises or three to four-night sailings often come at a lower price point, allowing you to experience a cruise vacation while saving money.

How to Budget for a Cruise Vacation

Your budget for a cruise vacation will depend on your personal financial situation and travel preferences. However, there are several ways you can budget effectively and save money while enjoying the benefits of cruising.

Research and compare prices: Take the time to research different cruise lines and itineraries to find the best deal for your budget. Look for promotions and discounts that can help you save money on your cruise fare.

Book in advance: By booking your cruise vacation early, you can often take advantage of early bird discounts and secure the best cabin options. Booking in advance also allows you to spread out the cost of your vacation over a longer period of time.

Plan your expenses: Consider all the expenses you’ll incur during your cruise, such as gratuities, onboard activities, and shore excursions. Create a budget for these additional costs and stick to it to avoid overspending.

Understanding Cruise Pricing

If you’re planning a cruise vacation, understanding cruise pricing is crucial. Cruise pricing can sometimes seem like a mystery with several components and variations. However, taking the time to unwrap this mystery can significantly impact your vacation budget and experience.

Importance of Understanding Cruise Pricing

Understanding cruise pricing is critical because it helps you budget appropriately and ensures you get the best bang for your buck. Knowing what your cruise fare includes and what extra costs can be incurred will help you avoid surprises and make the most out of your cruise vacation.

Factors Influencing Cruise Pricing

Several factors can influence how much your cruise will cost. These include the cruise length, destination, ship, cabin type, and time of year. Additionally, pricing is influenced by factors such as the inclusion of meals, entertainment, and other onboard services. Some cruises include all expenses in the fare, while others have additional costs for these services.

Cruise Payment Deadlines

Booking a cruise is straightforward, but understanding the payment deadlines can make your planning process smoother.

Initial Deposit Requirement

When you book your cruise, you’ll be required to make an initial deposit. This deposit usually ranges from 10 to 25% of the total cruise cost but can vary depending on the cruise line and type of cruise. Understanding this requirement can help you allocate funds appropriately when planning your cruise.

Final Payment Deadline

Your final payment deadline typically falls anywhere between 60 to 90 days before departure. However, again, this can vary among cruise lines. Therefore, mark this date on your calendar to avoid any last-minute mishaps.

Late Payment Consequences

If you miss a payment deadline, you may face penalties such as late fees, or in worst-case scenarios, the cruise line could cancel your booking altogether. This is why it’s essential to understand these deadlines and be diligent about meeting them.

Payment Plan Options

Now that you understand your payment deadlines, let’s discuss your options for payment plans. Different cruise lines offer various options that can fit any budget and financial circumstance.

Standard Payment Plan

The standard payment plan generally involves paying a deposit upon booking then settling the balance by the final payment deadline. This plan is suitable if you prefer making larger payments and clearing the amount within a short period.

Monthly Payment Plan

Some cruise lines offer monthly payment plans where you can spread out your payment over several months. This option can make your cruise vacation more affordable and manageable, freeing you from the pressure of having to pay the bulk sum all at once.

Layaway Payment Plan

A layaway payment plan allows you to lock in your cruise price and pay it off over a specified period. You can make bi-weekly or monthly payments, depending on the cruise line’s policy.

Understanding Typical Payment Plans and Options for Booking a Cruise

Benefits and Drawbacks of Payment Plans

Before choosing a payment plan, it’s important to review the benefits and drawbacks.

Appreciating the Flexibility

Payment plans often provide flexibility that allows people to afford cruises they otherwise might not be able to. By making smaller, consistent payments, you can budget for your vacation without breaking the bank.

Assessing Interest Charges

On the downside, you might end up paying more over time with certain payment plans due to interest charges. It’s essential to understand all the financial details before committing to a payment plan.

Reviewing Cancellation Policies

Additionally, before committing to a payment plan, review the cruise line’s cancellation policy. Make sure you are comfortable with the terms, especially regarding what happens if you cancel or need to change your booking.

Cruise Line Payment Policies

Cruise line payment policies can vary, so understanding the specific terms and conditions of your chosen cruise line is crucial.

Policy Variations Among Cruise Lines

Different cruise lines may have significant variations in their payment plans, deadlines, and cancellation policies. This can involve differences in deposit amounts, final payment deadlines, refund policies, and others.

Understanding Individual Cruise Line Terms and Conditions

Ensure that you read and understand the terms and conditions of your particular cruise line thoroughly. This can prevent any misunderstandings and ensure that you’re choosing the best cruise line that fits your financial situation and preferences.

Booking Through a Travel Agent

Consider booking through a travel agent for a more personalized and seamless experience.

Advantages of Using a Travel Agent

Travel agents can save you time and stress by handling all the payment details for you. They often have access to exclusive deals and can provide valuable advice based on their industry knowledge and experience.

Travel Agent Payment Options

Most travel agents offer flexible payment options. They can set up a payment plan for your cruise so you can pay in installments, thus making the trip more affordable.

Travel Agent Cancellation Policies

Like cruise lines, travel agents also have their cancellation policies. It’s important to understand these policies in case you need to change or cancel your cruise.

Travel Insurance and Cruise Bookings

One additional aspect to consider when booking a cruise and reviewing payment options is travel insurance.

Importance of Travel Insurance

Travel insurance provides coverage for unforeseen circumstances that could disrupt your vacation such as personal illness, family emergencies, or trip cancellations.

How Travel Insurance Affects Payment Options and Refunds

With travel insurance, you may be eligible for a full or partial refund if you have to cancel, depending on the reason. This gives you more flexibility regarding your payment options and potential refunds.

Special Deals and Offers

One of the best ways to stretch your cruise dollars is by taking advantage of special deals and offers.

Early Booking Discounts

Many cruise lines offer discounts if you book your cruise well in advance. These discounts can substantially reduce the cost of your cruise, making it more affordable.

Last-minute Deals

Some cruise lines also offer last-minute deals if they are looking to fill up remaining slots on their cruises. These deals could provide deep discounts on the original price.

Seasonal Specials

Cruise lines often run special promotions in line with seasons or events. Look out for these seasonal specials which can save you a substantial amount.

Paying for Onboard Expenses

Besides the cruise fare, there are also onboard expenses to consider.

Prepaying Gratuities

Most cruise lines offer the option to prepay your gratuities. This can make it easier for you to budget your onboard expenses and can save you from having to worry about it during your trip.

Setting Up an Onboard Account

Typically, you’ll have to set up an onboard account which is used for any purchases made on the ship. You can usually link this to a credit card or pay a deposit up front.

Onboard Expense Packages

Some cruise lines offer options where you can pre-pay for things like drinks, specialty dining, or entertainment packages. This can help you manage your onboard expenses more effectively.

Handling Cruise Cancellations and Reschedules

Even with the best planning, there may be times when you need to cancel or reschedule your cruise.

Understanding Cruise Line Cancellation Policies

Every cruise line has its cancellation policy. Some may offer full refunds if you cancel within a certain period, while others may give vouchers for future cruises.

Calculating Refund Amounts

The amount that you’ll be refunded depends on factors such as how close to the departure date you’re cancelling, whether you have travel insurance, and the specifics of the cruise line’s cancellation policy.

Managing Reschedules and Vouchers

If you need to reschedule your cruise, the cruise line may charge you a rescheduling fee. If you have vouchers, ensure you understand their terms of usage, including the expiry date.

When booking a cruise, remember to take your time to understand all payment plans and options. This way, you can get the best deal possible and fully enjoy your cruise vacation without any financial worries.

Do children's cruise tickets cost the same as an adult's?

Please be advised that infants and children are subject to normal guest pricing. There is no exception to this guideline.

We appreciate that infants and children will not fully partake of the food and entertainment on board. However, cruise passage is sold by the guest, not the stateroom. We must adhere to strict safety limits in the number of guests onboard each cruise, regardless of their age. Our youngest cruisers are no less a guest and require the same safety precautions as everyone else onboard. These strict safety limits often mean staterooms that can accommodate three or more guests must be sold as singles or doubles. Our current guideline does not provide reduced fares for infants.

For specific sailings, we do offer 3rd and 4th guest rates at a reduced cost in triple and quad occupancy staterooms. These rates are designed to offer the same fare to all 3rd and 4th guests, regardless of age. We genuinely regret any inconvenience experienced as a result of the information provided in this regard.

How can I request a refund if my cruise is cancelled?

If Celebrity Cruises cancels a voyage or delays embarkation by three (3) days or more and you elect not to sail on the delayed voyage or a substitute voyage we offer, you may obtain a refund or a future cruise credit (FCC). Although our practice is to issue a future cruise credit automatically, you may instead submit your request for a refund by contacting us. Refund requests must be made within six (6) months of the date the cruise was cancelled or the scheduled embarkation date, whichever is earlier.

Please note this policy does not apply to guests booked on chartered sailings. If you were booked on a chartered sailing that was canceled or embarkation was delayed by three (3) or more days, and you wish to inquire about refunds or future credits, you must contact the third party reseller that sold you the cruise.

What is Celebrity Cruises’ Guest Conduct Policy?

Throughout its history, Celebrity Cruises® has provided its guests with a wide variety of cruise experiences that lead to exceptional vacations. You may also find that one of the most amazing parts of your cruise experience will be the many rich and varied cultures represented among our guests. This diversity offers a chance to learn about different parts of the world and to make new friends. But just as a new friend can enhance your vacation experience, some guests may behave in ways you find unusual or undesirable. Since our guests do come from different and diverse backgrounds, it is important that everyone have a common understanding of the behavioral standards in place on Celebrity Cruises® ships.

This Guest Conduct Policy is intended to help ensure that all guests enjoy a safe and enjoyable cruise experience and sets forth standards of conduct for guests to follow throughout their vacation, including transfers to and from ships, inside terminals, while onboard, at ports-of-call, during shore excursions and at our private destinations. This policy is not intended to be all inclusive, and it is likely there will be conduct issues that it does not specifically address. In that event, as in all others, guests are expected to follow the direction of the ship's Captain who will take appropriate action to ensure the safety, security and well-being of our guests. In addition to this policy, guests are expected to comply with all applicable laws of the various countries that their cruise visits. Updates to the Guest Conduct Policy may be made between publications of this directory.

Read the full Guest Conduct Policy, here.

What happens if a guest doesn’t follow Celebrity’s Guest Conduct Policy?

Failure to act in accordance with this policy may result in:

  • Intervention by security, other management personnel, or law enforcement Removal of certain onboard privileges, which may include being detained, quarantined or confined in a cabin or hold cell.
  • Confiscation of illegal/contraband/prohibited items (may be turned over to law enforcement authorities).
  • Denial of boarding on the current or any future Celebrity Cruises®.
  • Reporting of incidents to government and law enforcement Authorities for follow-on legal action.
  • Removal from ship at the next port of call. Guests removed from a Celebrity ship pursuant to this policy, are responsible for their own accommodations and transportation home, at their expense. Documentation requirements for re-entry into the guest's home country are also the responsibility of the guest.

Establishing and articulating a Guest Conduct Policy helps ensure that all guests are able to enjoy a fantastic, safe and secure cruise experience.

What is Celebrity Cruises’ Smoking Policy?

For the comfort and enjoyment of our guests, our ships are designated as non-smoking; however, we recognize that some of our guests smoke. Therefore, to provide an onboard environment that also satisfies smokers, we have designated certain areas of the ship as ""smoking areas."" Generally, smoking is not permitted except in designated areas. (Contact Guest Relations for additional details). This policy includes smoking-like products such as electronic cigarettes.

Smoking is not permitted inside any guest stateroom; nor on any guest veranda. If a guest is in violation of this policy, a cleaning fee of $250 USD will be applied to their SeaPass® account and the guest may be subject to further action pursuant to the ""Consequences Section"" of this Guest Conduct Policy.

Celebrity Cruises® kindly asks all guests to please observe the non-smoking areas and to refrain from smoking cigarettes, pipes or cigars in any of the non-designated areas. These requests are made to provide a comfortable shipboard environment for everyone. Where permitted, cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco must always be properly disposed of and never thrown overboard. A guest must be at least 21 years of age to purchase, possess or use tobacco. During voyages that depart from international ports of call, local smoking laws will apply for the duration of said voyage.

What is Celebrity Cruises’ Alcohol Policy?

Celebrity Cruises® guests are expected to be responsible for their actions at all times, including during transfers to and from ships, inside terminals, while onboard, at our ports of call, during shore excursions and at our private destinations. Consuming alcohol to excess impairs one's judgment and reduces one's ability to recognize and avoid potentially dangerous situations. Guests who choose to consume alcohol must do so responsibly. The ship's staff may refuse to serve alcoholic beverages to any guest who does not consume alcohol responsibly, including those who have purchased an all-inclusive beverage package. Ship's personnel may request verification of a guest's age to verify they are of age to consume alcohol pursuant to this policy. Any guest that violates this alcohol policy will be considered for disciplinary action pursuant to the ""Consequences Section"" of this Guest Conduct Policy, and may lose their privileges to use areas or facilities of the ship.

Guests are only permitted to bring alcohol onboard under the following circumstances:

Embarkation day when each guest is permitted to bring onboard with them one (1) bottle of wine (which is subject to a corkage fee) per guest. A corkage fee does not apply to guests with the Classic Beverage Package or Premium Beverage Package. Security may inspect containers (including water bottles, soda bottles, mouthwash, canteens, etc.) at any time and will dispose of alcohol concealed in such container.

Alcoholic beverages that are purchased from onboard shops or in ports of call (which must be presented to security upon re-boarding), will be secured by ship's personnel. Alcohol secured by ship's personnel will be returned to guests just prior to the conclusion of their cruise vacation.

Guests who are under the permitted drinking age will not have alcohol returned to them.

The minimum drinking age for all alcoholic beverages on Celebrity Cruises® ships sailing from North America is 21. The minimum drinking age for all alcoholic beverages on Celebrity Cruises® ships sailing from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand is 18. Guests may contact Guest Relations or refer to Celebrity Today for specific minimum drinking age information on their cruise vacation.

For purposes of complying with the minimum drinking age requirements, a guest's age is established upon boarding at the beginning of the cruise vacation. If a guest celebrates their birthday during the cruise vacation, and thereby becomes of age to consume alcohol, the guest may thereafter ask the Guest Relations Manager to modify ship's records to permit their consumption of alcohol during the remainder of the vacation. The guest will be required to appear at Guest Relations to present a valid government-issued form of identification to permit verification of their age.

No guest under age 18 may possess or consume alcohol at any time while onboard. No guest under age 21 may possess or consume alcohol at our private destinations. Any guest who goes ashore and consumes alcohol (whether under the supervision of a parent/guardian or not, is responsible for ensuring they consume responsibly and retain their ability to recognize and avoid potentially dangerous situations when they return to the ship. Parents/guardians are reminded they are responsible for the actions of their child/young adult at all times while on a Celebrity Cruises® cruise vacation.

Guests who violate any alcohol policy, including but not limited to underage drinking; providing alcohol to minors or young adults; possessing, concealing or attempting to conceal alcoholic items in their luggage, when boarding or while onboard; engaging in alcohol drinking games; or failing to consume alcohol responsibly, will be considered for discipline under the provisions of this policy.

I worked on cruises for 3 years. Here are 6 things I'd never do on board.

  • I used to work on cruises. After many days at sea, there are things I'd never do on a cruise .
  • I never wear my room key around my neck and try to avoid misnaming the ship.
  • I never buy the drink package or pay for meal upgrades in the main dining room.

Insider Today

I've sailed around the world as a cruise-ship employee , and now I enjoy cruising as a passenger.

I love the salty sea air, waking up in a new country, and lazy days by the pool, but a week at sea could get more complicated this year with cruises predicted to be in high demand .

While fighting a little harder to secure a prime seat on the pool deck, you may as well also avoid some rookie mistakes.

Here are six things I'd never do on a cruise after working on them for three years.

Pay for upgrades in the main dining room

Typically, main dining room meals are included in the cost of a cruise. But in recent years, it's become common for cruise lines to charge guests extra if they want to upgrade to "supplementary" items like lobster or certain steaks.

I know $12 may not seem like much for a steak or lobster tail at dinner, but the cost of the cruise is supposed to include your food.

So, even though I enjoy lobster, I stick with the items without the upcharges.

Buy the drink package

I enjoy a piña colada by the pool or a Manhattan while listening to a jazz set after dinner. Even so, it doesn't make sense for me to pay in advance for 12 to 15 cocktails a day.

I've done the math on typical unlimited drink packages , and the cost simply isn't worth it for me.

This is especially true with a port-heavy itinerary. If I've gone ashore to explore all day, that means I'm not sidled up to the bar slurping down alcoholic slushies.

Related stories

I prefer to buy as I go and take advantage of happy hour and other drink specials that are available on certain cruise lines. I also check the beverage policy in advance and bring on my own wine, if allowed.

Touch shared contact surfaces with my fingers

Fellow guests will never see me touching the elevator buttons with my fingertips. Knuckles and elbows do the trick.

Some cruise lines are better than others at wiping down commonly touched surfaces, but I don't take any chances. I avoid touching things others frequently touch, and I wash my hands frequently.

This strategy has worked for me, as I have never contracted norovirus, even when it was running rampant on a ship I was on. It's quite contagious and can linger on your fingertips even after using hand sanitizer . I'd definitely rather be safe than sorry.

Wear my room key around my neck

I never walk around the ship with my room key around my neck, and I especially never do this when on land.

There are two reasons for this. First, I see many passengers using the room keys dangling from their necks to flaunt their cruise loyalty status . It just looks pretentious.

The sophisticated cruisers with the highest status, with the most days at sea, never show off their fancy room keys.

That's because they know the more important reason — safety. In port, that room key bouncing off your chest looks like an invitation to be robbed. It screams, "I have money! Come and take it from me."

Misname the ship

English is a funny language that has its quirks. Naming conventions make that even more complicated.

Ships have proper names, and so do not require a definite article. For example, "Tomorrow I am embarking on Discovery Princess," or "I enjoyed scenic cruising on MS Westerdam."

If you want to look like a savvy sailor, learn to drop the "the!"

Plan my port-day itinerary so tight that I may not make it back to the ship on time

Oh, the recurring nightmares I've had about not making it back to the ship on time during a port day.

I've never missed a sail away, but I have cut it too close at times and have had to run down a pier or two. Just recently, as a passenger, my taxi driver got lost returning our group to the port at night.

When I realized how late we were going to be, I forked over $8 per minute to be connected with the ship. I pleaded with them to wait for us. It was a sprint through the port to get back on and we received quite a scolding from the first officer.

That time, we got lucky. In the future, I'll be giving myself more time than I think I need to make it back.

Healthcare’s financial revolution: flexible patient payment options.

Healthcare Patient Costs

In the past year, there has been a surge in credit card usage among Americans, with expenditures on groceries increasing by 31% and gas by 22%, as reported by a recent Prosper Insights & Analytics survey. This uptick reflects how the relentless rise in inflation and cost of living force consumers to reassess their financial priorities. These trends extend beyond consumer goods, seeping into essential services like healthcare.

Prosper - Use Credit Card More Often For The Following

Since 2000, the inflation-adjusted price of medical care—including services provided, insurance, drugs, and medical equipment—has increased by over 114% , outpacing the 81% rise in overall prices. As inflation takes an increasingly heavy toll on healthcare expenses , a concerning trend has emerged: many consumers are sacrificing crucial medical care to afford other pressing life demands, despite a record 92% of Americans having health insurance.

Branden Neish, Chief Product and Technology Officer at healthcare experience company Weave , explains that economic uncertainty and rising costs drive individuals to make tough healthcare choices, often leading to postponed appointments, skipped screenings, and missed treatments that compromise individual health outcomes and place additional burdens on the healthcare system. Prioritizing affordability and accessibility requires flexible payment options to ensure uninterrupted care and enhanced patient satisfaction, especially in times of economic strain.

Bringing Flexible Payment Plans to Healthcare

With high prices and high interest rates, flexible payment options—such as payment plans, third-party lending, and Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL)—are already being utilized in several industries to help consumers afford and access goods and services they may need but can’t afford upfront. BNPL payment methods surged in the U.S. in 2019 and since then, have continued to see increased use year over year, with 1 in 5 American consumers using BNPL in 2023. The main reasons driving this increase? More convenience, flexibility, and managing cash flow.

Failing to pay off a full credit card statement amount each month results in accruing interest that carries over to the next billing cycle. Yet, a recent Prosper Insights & Analytics survey revealed that only 44% of respondents pay their credit card balance in full each month.

Prosper - Payment of Credit Card Balance Monthly

Medical bills are the third main contributor to credit card debt, behind food and rent/utilities.

Prosper - Which Of The Following Contribute Most To Your Credit Card Debt

“Similar to the popularity of BNPL in retail, flexible payment plans are now emerging as innovative, interest-free solutions to alleviate financial barriers that hinder access to healthcare services,” Neish explained. “These plans allow patients to spread out their healthcare expenses over time, which eases financial burden and enhances affordability and access to treatments and medications they may not have the immediate funds for.”

Given their adaptability, agility, and close patient connections, small- to medium-sized healthcare businesses are well-positioned to implement flexible payment solutions. SMBs often have more agility in decision-making processes and can swiftly integrate new payment options into their operations. Additionally, they typically have a better understanding of the specific needs and financial circumstances of their patients, allowing them to tailor payment plans more effectively.

Why Patients and Providers Need Flexible Payment Solutions

Leveraging payment solutions like payment plans and BNPL fosters a more inclusive healthcare ecosystem. For patients, delaying care can lead to the progression of health conditions, potentially resulting in more severe symptoms, complications, and expenses. For example, delaying treatment for chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension can greatly increase the risk of heart disease, kidney failure, or stroke.

The financial strain that leads individuals to postpone seeking care worsens due to delays. Treating health issues in their earlier stages is often more effective and less expensive than addressing advanced or chronic conditions. These persistent, untreated health problems can also impact patients’ quality of life by limiting their ability to work or engage in social activities and negatively impact their mental health as they worry about their well-being and the consequences of delaying care.

“The ramifications of delaying care extend beyond individual patients to impact healthcare systems at large,” Neish shared. “For healthcare providers, patients who delay care often present with more advanced stages of illness or complications which require more intensive interventions that strain healthcare resources, increase the workload for providers and contribute to longer wait times for appointments and procedures for other patients. Moreover, delayed care leads to increased demand for emergency services and hospital admissions, further straining healthcare resources and exacerbating financial pressures on providers.”

Delayed care can also affect the financial stability of healthcare providers, particularly SMBs that may not have the same level of funding as larger hospital systems. For SMBs, reduced patient volumes or delayed elective procedures can lead to decreased revenue, impacting their ability to cover overhead costs and maintain staffing levels.

Strategies for providers to encourage timely access to care

While they can’t reverse the effects of inflation and the increased cost of living, healthcare providers can help make healthcare more affordable and accessible by establishing payment plans that allow patients to spread out the cost of their care over time.

“In a recent Weave survey, almost half of consumers (47%) said they’d be less likely to delay treatment if their healthcare provider offered BNPL,” said Neish. “At the same time, however, the survey showed that more than half of consumers (51%) said their healthcare providers do not currently offer flexible payment options.”

While these solutions can be beneficial, providers must ensure transparency and clarity in pricing structure to prevent patients from falling into cycles of debt. Providers can also work with patients to customize payment schedules to accommodate financial circumstances.

Aside from offering payment plans or BNPL, medical providers can take other steps to ensure patients don’t skip vital appointments and that their practices don’t suffer from staff burnout.

“Healthcare providers can harness AI tools as a sort of personal assistant to revolutionize their workflows, streamlining administrative tasks, enhancing personalized care, and improving patient outcomes,” said Neish. “By integrating generative AI into daily practice, they can unlock a new era of efficiency, precision, and patient satisfaction."

Educating patients about the importance of regular preventive care and the potential consequences of skipping appointments can help encourage continuity with healthcare visits, even during financial strain. Additionally, implementing more tech beyond just payment plan systems can also help. Automated appointment reminder systems, such as phone calls, text messages, or emails, can help reduce missed appointments by reminding patients of upcoming appointments and allowing them to easily reschedule. Similarly, offering flexible scheduling options, such as booking appointments online, communicating with the office via text message, enabling flexible and remote work for office staff, or enabling telehealth visits can accommodate patients’ busy schedules and simplify access to care. Finally, simplifying the check-in process and reducing wait times using digital forms can improve the overall patient experience and reduce the likelihood of patients becoming frustrated and delaying or discontinuing care.

Joining the patient experience movement to create impact

The shift towards value-based care will persist, favoring practices that invest in care models that prioritize patient experience and improve healthcare business operations. To meet these expectations, enhanced communication, coordination of care, preventive interventions, and addressing social determinants affecting health—such as financial strain—are crucial. Adopting BNPL in tandem with AI innovative digital automation tools offers providers an opportunity to meet patients where they are and allows patients to continue treating healthcare as the necessity it is.
