Peechi Dam, Thrissur Overview

Peechi Dam lies at a distance of 23 km from Thrissur. The dam is the main irrigation project of this town of Kerala. It is a very famous attraction, and visitors come here now and then for the fantastic picnic spot it serves as and for the boating facilities which are offered at this reservoir. One can also come across Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary here which is a must-visit place for the nature-lovers. The dam is constructed across the Manali River.

The dam is spread across an area of 3200 acres. When it was completely built in 1957, it could irrigate up to 17555 Ha of land present in Mukundapuram, Thrissur, Thalappally and Chavakkad Taluk. Peechi Dam also supplies drinking water to the town of Thrissur. Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary situated near the dam is worth paying a visit. It was built in 1958 and covers an area of 125 square km. It is home to a variety of flora and fauna. Ponmudi with a height of about 923 m is the highest peak in the sanctuary and experiences an average rainfall of about 3000 mm.

At a distance of 22 km from Thrissur, Peechi Dam is a picturesque dam situated at Peechi village near Thrissur. It is one of the scenic tourist places in Thrissur . Built across the Manali River, the Peechi Dam was built in 1959. Ikkanda Warrier (1890-1977), the first Prime Minister of the then independent state of Kochi, India, was the architect of Peechi Dam. The dam was started as an irrigation project for the surrounding villages in the Thrissur district and caters to the drinking water needs of the population of Thrissur City. A man made dam dating back to the 1950s, made for irrigation purposes, is now a tourist attraction.

Located 23 km away from Thrissur town, it was constructed under the then-prime minister of the independent state of Cochin, E. Ikkanda Warrier. Built across the Manali river with a catchment area of nearly 3,200 acres, it facilitates drinking water and irrigation purposes in the locality. But with the Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary closeby, tourists are drawn to the natural landscape.

The dam is best visited when the shutters are open as the water cascade is a breathtaking sight with the greenery in the background. A children’s park and a garden with a viewpoint are also attractions here with a minimal entrance fee, making it perfect for a family trip. Refreshment stalls and a parking area add to the overall experience. Various walking trails await once you reach the pavilion, humbly welcoming you to enjoy the dam, park, and garden with the statue of Parasurama. Even though cameras are not allowed into the dam area, phones are permitted.

Twenty kilometers east of Thrissur town there is an enchanting spot by a dam. Take a couple of hours off from the drive and make a detour to this place where you can take a stroll through a beautiful garden. Or get into a boat and take a ride through the placid water soaking in those mellifluous birdsongs coming from the woods. Sit back and catch nature in her offbeat moods. If you’re lucky you may catch elephants bathing on the banks of the river. Are you type adventurous? Peechi opens its secret alleys through thick woods where you can trek deep into the soul of the wild. The green may sting your eyes with its brilliance especially after a rain. There are some beautiful falls inside the forest, where you can take a dip in the pool, sloughing off all your tiredness from the drive.  The sanctuary is part of the Palapilli-Nelliampathy forests and forms the northern boundary of the Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary .

Another beautiful place you can check out on your journey to Eravikulam is Vazhani dam in Thrissur district. The sedate and serene mood of the lethargic river soothes the mind like Zen music. You’d be half in a dream ambling through the lush green woods imbibing the songs of birds. Dwarfed by tall trees you feel as if you stand in heaven amidst the pillars of the divine palace. Vazhani, constructed across Wadakkancherry River for irrigation purposes is situated 23 kilometers from Thrissur and is connected to Peechi forest.

Peechi-Vazhani Wild Life Sanctuary

The Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary, the second oldest sanctuary in Kerala is situated in the catchment area of the Peechi and Vazhani dams of Thrissur district and is a good spot for nature lovers. Established in 1958, with headquartered in Peechi, this 125 sq km sanctuary is about 20 km east of Thrissur city. The sanctuary is part of the Palapilli-Nelliampathy forests and forms the Northern boundary of the Chimmini Wild Life Sanctuary .

Having an abundance of enchanting flora and fauna and a lake where you can go boating, this place is a treat for the nature lover. The forest here mainly consist of Tropical Ever green Forests, Tropical Semi-evergreen forests, Moist Deciduous forests.

There are more than 50 different kinds of orchids, innumerable rare medicinal plants, teak, rosewood, and so on. The faunal diversity includes over 39 species of mammals including carnivores like the leopard, tiger, jungle cat and herbivores like the Sambar deer, barking deer, spotted deer, Indian bison and Asian elephant. More than 176 species of birds, 30 species of reptiles, 17 species of amphibians and 40 species of fishes are reported from the sanctuary.

The highest peak in the sanctuary is the 923 m high Ponmudi . Trekking facility is available in the sanctuary with permission and the ponmudi peak is the right choice for that. One can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the sanctuary from atop the peak. Nature camps are held frequently in the sanctuary.

There are numerous streams, flowing over the entire sanctuary, which join the three main rivers Kurumali, Manali, and Wadakkanchery. There are three vayals in the sanctuary viz, Paingottupadam (10ha), Pathrakkandam (1ha) and Pothiyadukky (5ha). There are two reservoirs, Peechi and Vazhani formed by construction of two dams across the Manalippuzha and Vadakkancheripuzha. The total area of the two reservoirs is 14.793 sq. km.

For tourists, accommodation is available at the rest house and the information centre at Peechi. The average summer temperature is 38 °C (100 °F). The average winter temperature is 15 °C (59 °F). The average annual rainfall is about 3000 mm.

Trekking: You can also enjoy trekking here. Ponmudi peak is the highest peak here with 923 meters height, which is ideal for trekking purposes. One can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the sanctuary from atop the peak. Tourists have to take prior permission for trekking from the forest department.

The number of visitors to the popular tourist destination in Thrissur district, Peechi Dam,  has increased manifold after the first phase of the beautification of the botanical garden.

The panoramic view of the Peechi dam and the botanical garden is jaw-dropping and this surreal setting is attracting hundreds of people to the dam area. The one-km walk through the botanical garden would give one a feeling of trekking through forests. 

The Peechi dam, which was closed for seven months in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, was recently reopened for visitors.  Now, there is a marked increase in the tourist footfall at the dam area and the security personnel are finding it difficult to control the heavy rush of visitors.
