Luxury Cruises to Peru

The breathtaking country of Peru is a land of vast coastline, steep mountains in shades of green, buzzing cities, and extraordinary antiquities. A luxury cruise to Peru will take you to the cosmopolitan capital of Lima, sprawling along a long line of cliffs pounded by the Pacific, with intriguing ruins to explore within easy reach.

Pisco, sandwiched between the jagged Andes, the desert, and the ocean, is rich in wildlife, from the sea lions, boobies, and pelicans of the Ballestas Islands to the diverse bird life of the beautiful Paracas National Reserve, a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site.

Choose an extended expedition to the Galapagos Islands with Celebrity, and you could also explore the wonders of Machu Picchu, the glorious old city of Cuzco and the beautiful Sacred Valley, in the shadow of the serrated, snow-capped Andes. Discover Peru on a luxury South American cruise with Celebrity Cruises.

Peru Cruise Highlights

Cutting-edge cuisine.

Peruvian chefs offer a fresh, exciting approach to food, using ingredients that have been in the country’s cuisine for millennia. Don’t miss a chance to try ceviche, fresh sea bass marinated in lime juice with salt, onion, and hot chilies. You’ll also find rich, meaty dishes, from spiced beef skewers to roast guinea pig, a delicacy here. Everywhere you go, you’ll be offered a Pisco Sour, the national drink, which is Peruvian brandy with lime, sugar syrup, frothy egg white, and bitters.

Incredible Antiquities

Peru is rich in spectacular man-made wonders, from the incredible desert drawings of the Nazca Lines to the mysterious “candelabra” carved into the bleak cliffs of the Ballestas Islands, near Pisco. There are archaeological sites to admire close to Lima, from the temples and pyramids of the pre-Columbian Pachacamac Oracle Temple to the seven-story adobe pyramid of Huaca Pucllana, an astonishing remnant of the sophisticated pre-Inca culture that thrived here between 200 AD and 700 AD.

Machu Picchu, Cuzco, & the Sacred Valley

The snowy Andes tower over the lush Rio Urubamba Valley, known as the Sacred Valley; this was once the heart of the Inca empire. Even higher in the mountains, at a dizzying 11,200 feet, is the glorious old city of Cuzco, a maze of cobbled squares and lavishly decorated cathedrals. It’s the gateway to Machu Picchu, which is the prize of travel to Peru for many. Hemmed in by sheer cliffs and often draped in ethereal mist, this Inca citadel is surely one of the most captivating places on earth.

Temperature & Rainfall

Best Time to Cruise the Amazon River

The high-water season runs roughly from November to May with 60-180 inches of rain. This rainy season allows more extensive exploration in small craft and jungle access via water. Low-water season is June through October with 30-100 inches of rain. This dry season, or shall we say less rainy season, may allow for more trail walks. Though it can rain slightly more in the high-water season, it usually rains some every day in the low-water season too. The best time to cruise the Amazon River is at the end of the rainy season in May and June.

What Travelers Say About Their Amazon Cruise

The seamless transfer, accommodation, and guides minimized our efforts to enjoy a fabulous trip planned with AdventureSmith. I cannot say enough positive things about the way you took my thoughts and desires (including certain hotels) to create this fabulous package. The comfortably elegant suites joined together with the impeccable staff to provide a fabulous four days.

This is only the second time that I have not planned and organized a vacation and yet this is the ONLY time that every single aspect of our trip was outstanding. Doing a small boat cruise and with only 8 passengers; we all became like family and are all still in contact with one another.

Delfin II had great guides. They could spot things I never would have seen. I wish we had stayed on it for a full week instead of the short four days. All other hotels were above expectations.

The crew was absolutely fantastic. I most enjoyed the skiff excursions with Victor and Neal—they were so knowledgeable.

The naturalists were excellent, full of information and willing to answer any questions--dumb or otherwise--we asked. The entire trip was a wonderful experience.

This experience exceeded our already high expectations. The seamless transfer, accommodation, and guides minimized our efforts to enjoy a fabulous trip planned with AdventureSmith. The trip with Delfin I was truly amazing. The comfortably elegant suites joined together with the impeccable staff to provide a fabulous four days.

Accommodations Review

All choices from the Belmond Miraflores, to our stay in Cusco, Inkaterra in Aguas Caliente, and most definitely the Delfin I were superior accommodations, each with a very unique feel.

Crew & Guides Review

The leaders and guides on the Delfin I exuded intelligence, constantly piqued our interest, and worked tirelessly to make our trip perfect. Javier was the lead guide, but we enjoyed socializing a bit with the bar tender Gaston, the Captain Javier, Security guards, Cesar and Vincente, the boat driver Rodsando, and the medic Dante.

All the transfers worked like a ballet. The drivers/guides appeared as promised with absolutely no concerns on our part. All involved were informative and professional. This certainly made our trip much more pleasant as this removed a certain tension from the trip.

Meals Review

The Inkaterra surprised our group with its attention to detail. All meals were included and all were a gourmet delight. As for the Delfin I, again with all meals included, we experienced very local foods artistically and deliciously prepared with keeping our desires in mind at all times. After one meal, the staff knew exactly our thoughts and choices for drinks, appetizers, and dishes. Excellent.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

I cannot say enough positive things about the way you took my thoughts and desires (including certain hotels) to create this fabulous package. Through many interactions and last minute changes on my part, our needs were met without question. Thank you for creating this amazing trip which will give us a lifetime of memories in a quite unique way.

We have traveled Europe extensively and now need more active experiences. Our specialist suggested many venues to satisfy our very particular taste and desires.

This is only the second time that I have not planned and organized a vacation and yet this is the ONLY time that every single aspect of our trip was outstanding.  Every transfer and stay was flawless except one mix-up on one end and all it took was one phone call and that was solved - so really to us that didn't count.  It was one of our best vacations ever, not only because of the destination but also because we didn't have to worry about connections and specifics. The Amazon on the Delfin I was the best ever.  Doing a small boat cruise and with only 8 passengers; we all became like family and are all still in contact with one another.

The food on the Delfin I was 5 star all the way.  They even prepared our piranha that we caught and it was delicious!

Every transfer, driver and guide was professional, reliable and couldn't have been better.  Each became a friend and were flexible enough to accommodate our desires during the day.  Couldn't say enough about all of these.

Our AdventureSmith Specialist was available always by email, phone to answer questions and the suggested packing lists were extremely helpful and really we had 3 different climates to pack for; coastal/urban in Lima, tropical jungle in Iquitos and cooler highlands in Cusco and we found that we had packed well thanks to the advice of AdventureSmith.

The entire trip was awesome. Delfin II was great. Wish we had stayed on it for a full week instead of the short four days. All other hotels were above expectations.

I think on meals, a little more explanation would be helpful. Included hotel meals were a nice surprise as I didn't realize as many were included as they were.

Delfin II had great guides. They could spot things I never would have seen.

Taylor was great. Setting up this trip was simple and easy and she was helpful with any and all my questions. Excellent management of all travel plans. On top of it when our flight was cancelled from Iquitos to Lima. Only hiccups were in the Lima airport. That place is crazy and we barely found our guide the first time and completely missed them the second.

  • Taylor Cranney

I loved seeing all the birds and wildlife. The crew was absolutely fantastic. I most enjoyed the skiff excursions with Victor and Neal—they were so knowledgeable. The jungle walks were good too.

Everything was clean, neat and welcoming.

Victor is a jewel, very kind and helpful. I primarily stayed with Victor's group as he was a bit more into the birds and I loved seeing so many and he would identify them and was so excited and enthusiastic with each new siting. The guides most enjoyable and got us through the airport painlessly. About the only thing I would change would be for the naturalists to give us the list of possible sightings of birds and animals at the first of the trip and not on the last day.

Food was very good. I liked the fruit with each meal and a choice of meats. I enjoyed all the variety we had.

Traveler Advice

Learn a bit of basic Spanish if possible. Bring one or two changes of nice clothes for dinner. A few things were recommended that were unnecessary, such as laundry soap, plug for the tub, and clothes line. It was hard to take everything recommended and still pack light. However, I was amazed at the very large bags some guests took.

  • Amatista Amazon Cruise

We went to the Upper Amazon with a lay-over in Quito.  Everything went perfectly (except for a cancelled flight on the way home) and the entire trip was a wonderful experience.

Absolutely first class.

The were all exceptional.  The naturalists were excellent, full of information and willing to answer any questions--dumb or otherwise--we asked.  I learned a lot and I think the others did, too.

The crew/staff on both ships were excellent, as well.  The attention to detail on both ships was remarkable and everyone, from the top managers on down, went out of their way to make sure we were well taken care of.

Could not have been better. The chef was exceptional at providing food that reflected the local cultures, yet catering to American (or Australian in some cases) tastes.  Every meal was fun and something of an adventure.

In addition to providing information, they were available for any questions we had.  AdventureSmith was great and answered any questions I had. They made all of our transfer arrangements and they were seamless!  Really well done.  We worked through Exito Travel for our flights to and from South America, and they were excellent, especially in the face of the problems with the reservation systems caused by the merger between American and US Airways.

Panoramic View of Lima from Miraflores, Lima, Peru

Cruise to Lima (Callao), Peru

Lima (callao) shore excursions, amazing experiences coming soon., sorry, there are no excursions for this port at this moment., things to do in lima.

Lima's main square, Plaza de Armas, is a beautful site to see.

Get to Know Centro

Lima's main square, Plaza de Armas, is a beautful site to see.

Plaza de Armas is a must-visit, and you'll realize why as you stand amid towering palm trees and admire the Cathedral of Lima, the wooden balconies of the Archbishop's Palace and the baroque-style Government Palace. Peru's president resides there, and a ceremonial changing of the guard occurs daily at noon.

Pre-Incan monkey ceramics called huacos hail from the Peruvian culture of Chancay.

Go Ancient or Modern

Pre-Incan monkey ceramics called huacos hail from the Peruvian culture of Chancay.

To appreciate indigenous history, visit the Larco Museum, set amid lush gardens in the Pueblo Libre district and featuring pre-Colombian artwork — some of it famously erotic — spanning more than 5,000 years. Or you can enjoy modern creativity at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) in trendy Barranco or ogle 14-karat-gold decadence at the Museo Oro del Peru.

Lima's Barranco district is a colorful area with many things to do.

Wander and Make a Wish

The eclectic Barranco district is where you'll feel Lima's bohemian vibe. In addition to tucked-away bars and coffee shops and the MAC, you'll find street art, mansions and the 100-foot wooden El Puente de los Suspiros (Bridge of Sighs). Legend says that if you make a wish and hold your breath as you cross, your wish will come true.

Peruvian markets are a great place to get handwoven souvenirs

LOCAL CUISINE

Peruvian cuisine is celebrated because of Lima's innovative gastronomy, blending local ingredients — seafood, peppers, corn, quinoa and potatoes — with global flavors, especially Japanese and Chinese. Dishes to try include ceviche (raw fish in a citrusy marinade), causa (mashed potatoes with chili pepper and shredded chicken) and Nikkei, Japanese-Peruvian cuisine, such as sashimi-style fish in a spicy sauce.

Peruvian markets are a great place to get handwoven souvenirs

Traditional Peruvian handicrafts are colorful and practical — straw baskets, clay pottery and handwoven sweaters — and in Lima there are several spots to shop. In the Miraflores district, the Indian Market features four city blocks of stalls. The Larcomar mall near Parque Salazar has several handicraft shops. Neighboring Barranco is home to an array of artisanal stores and galleries.

Peru vs Brazil for an Amazon Rainforest Tour

Cristalino Lodge View

The Amazon Rainforest covers 40% of South America and crosses nine nations. However, the largest amount of Amazonia is housed by Peru and Brazil.

First, let’s introduce the Amazon Rainforest and then mention the Amazon of Peru and Brazil specifically. After this, we will cover some of the differences between these fantastic regions to help you make the most of this incredible forest.

An Introduction

The Amazon Rainforest is the world’ largest tropical forest. This is also the world’s largest home to wildlife with more species found here than anywhere else on Earth.

The nine nations crossed by the Amazon Rainforest are Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana and Suriname.

The countries with the most of Amazonia are Peru, Brazil and Colombia. Around 10% is then divided between the other 6 nations.

Jaguar near Tambopata Research Center, Puerto Maldonado, Peru

Within this vast tropical forest, you can find an incredible diversity of animals and plants. The iconic wildlife includes the many different monkeys, toucans, macaw parrots, giant river otters, jaguar and tapir. The forest is then full of tall emergent trees and many fascinating plants, including delicate orchids and bromeliads.

The Amazon River and its many tributaries feed this vast forest. Starting as a trickle in the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Andes, the river officially begins near the port city of Iquitos in northern Peru. The Amazon River forms with the merging of the Marañón and Ucayali rivers.

From Iquitos in Peru, the Amazon River flows east across the continent passing the southern tip of Colombia before entering Brazil for the rest of its journey.

Brazil’s Amazon Rainforest

Brazil contains the majority of the Amazon Rainforest with 60% of the forest housed within Brazil’s borders. This translates to around 1,283,000 square miles (3,323,000 square km) of rainforest.

Because the majority of this vast tropical forest is housed within Brazil, it’s no surprise that Brazil is considered the world’s most biodiverse country.

This is also where you find the majority of the Amazon River as it flows from Tabatinga, the first Brazilian port the river encounters, to the river mouth near the Brazilian port city of Belém.

The main city visitors to the Brazilian Amazon use as their gateway to the rainforest is Manaus. This is also the largest city in Amazonia. Manaus is also where you can find the confluence of the Amazon River and the Rio Negro, the Amazon’s largest tributary.

Tucano Cruise, Manaus, Brazil

The area where these rivers merge is known as the meeting of the waters and is an attraction in its own right. This is where both rivers run side by side for many miles. The Rio Negro is dark from tannins and the Amazon is lighter from the different sediments collected enroute. This creates a visual spectacle popular for visitors to Manaus.

Note that in Brazil it is only after this merging that the river is known as the Amazon. Before this point, right up to the Peruvian border, it is locally called the Rio Solimões.

From Manaus, you can enjoy fantastic expedition cruises into the Amazon Rainforest. Explore the forest to find different monkeys, colorful birds and hopefully some lesser seen animals and plants. You will also see tall rainforest trees with delicate bromeliads and orchids balanced on the branches.

Pompadour Cotinga - Cristalino Reserve

Expedition cruises, such as the Tucano Cruise from Manaus, not only take you on a river cruise, but also enable you to leave the main vessel aboard small skiffs for rainforest exploration. Led by skilled naturalist guides, enjoy finding some fascinating rainforest life as you explore smaller Amazonian waterways.

Tucano Cruise Dining

The Tucano Amazon Cruise

Aboard the Tucano Amazon Cruise, you will explore the Amazon Rainforest from Manaus. And you will travel down the magnificent ...

Another excellent area of Brazilian Amazon to visit is accessed from the gateway of Alta Floresta at the southern edge of Amazonia. Here, you can find the Cristalino Lodge and Cristalino Reserve. This backs onto a protected area mosaic of over 2 million hectares of Amazonia, which includes different connected reserves and parks. This is also one of the most well studied areas of the Brazilian Amazon.

This area of Amazonia is very near the incredible Pantanal Wetlands, which is another of the world’s most ecologically rich regions. This adds to the diversity of animals and plants you will see from the Cristalino Lodge as you explore surrounding rainforest.

Howler Monkey - Cristalino Reserve

Not surprisingly, on guided tours from the luxurious Cristalino Lodge you have a chance of spotting some incredible Amazon Rainforest animals and plants.

Peru’s Amazon Rainforest

Peru contains the second highest amount of Amazon Rainforest after Brazil. This is also a fantastic section of Amazonia. The Peruvian Amazon contains one of the highest diversities of animals and plants, which is thought to be linked to the Andes mountains.

Aside from incredible wildlife, the Peruvian Amazon is fortunate to be home to beautiful oxbow lakes, protected areas and claylicks.

Woolly Monkey, Tahuayo River, Peru

The oxbow lakes are attractive areas where tributaries of the Amazon river once flowed. As these rivers constantly move through the forest, changing routes with their flow, the rivers often leave behind bodies of water of previous routes. These areas are often arced with the river’s previous curved ‘oxbow’ shape.

The lakes that form become very attractive to different animals and fruiting trees often grow at the lake edges. The water itself is often a home for giant river otters, lake-living birds and different amphibians. The different plants and trees that grow are also a draw for several different monkeys, hoatzin birds and macaws. Kingfishers and herons also perch on the branches and wait for fish.

Another attraction of the Peruvian Amazon, claylicks are areas of exposed riverbank where many different animals come to feed from the salt-rich and medicinal clay.

Not only helping top up necessary salts, the clay also contains chemicals that neutralize toxins found in different forest foods, such as unripe fruits and seeds.

Of the different animals that feed from the clay, such as monkeys, tapir, capybara and peccary, the most famous of claylick visitors are the large and colorful macaws.

The many large and colorful macaws of Peru’s Tambopata National Reserve have inspired many magazine cover stories. Witnessing these areas is an incredible experience as you’re greeted with an almost guaranteed spectacle of sound and color.

Peru’s Amazon Rainforest of Puerto Maldonado

Mentioning the incredible Tambopata National Reserve from Puerto Maldonado in Peru’s south leads us to the gateways to the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest.

Puerto Maldonado is located in Peru’s southern Amazon Rainforest and is a favored gateway for visitors combining Machu Picchu with the rainforest.

The protected areas you can visit from Puerto Maldonado include the lowland rainforest of Manu National Park and Tambopata National Reserve.

Both of these protected areas contain beautiful oxbow lakes and many macaw claylicks to see hundreds of colorful birds and other wildlife.

Clay Lick - Tambopata Reserve

Fantastic lodges for visiting the claylicks include the deep rainforest lodge of the Tambopata Research Center, which offers some of the best wildlife experiences in the Amazon Rainforest, and the Refugio Amazonas Lodge in the buffer zone of Tambopata National Reserve.

From the Refugio Amazonas Lodge, you can also visit a beautiful oxbow lake to see different lake-living animals. The lodge offers a similar experience to the community-owned Posada Amazonas Lodge.

However, note that from Posada Amazonas Lodge you have a higher chance of spotting giant river otters. From Refugio Amazonas lodge, you can visit a large macaw claylicks and the area has a slightly higher diversity of animals and plants.

Peru’s Amazon Rainforest of Iquitos

Peru’s Amazon Rainforest of Iquitos provides access to the rainforest of the Amazon River itself. The Amazon River begins near Iquitos at the confluence of the Marañón and Ucayali rivers.

The protected areas near Iquitos for fantastic experiences of Amazonia include the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve and Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve.

The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is one of the largest of Peru’s protected areas. The reserve includes a high amount of flooded tropical forest and an incredible diversity of animals and plants.

Known as the Forest of Mirrors, the Pacaya Samiria Reserve also offers some beautiful scenery with the green canopy and blue sky reflected in the reserve’s nutrient-rich waters.

On fantastic river cruises, enjoy guided expeditions aboard motorized skiffs and on forest walks to see several different monkeys, colorful toucans and parrots, many other birds, fascinating reptiles and tall rainforest trees.

Pacaya Samiria, Iquitos, Peru

To complement the beauty of the Pacaya Samiria Reserve, we especially recommend some of the excellent luxury cruises from Iquitos, such as the Delfin I , Delfin II, Aqua Amazon or the Zafiro Amazon Cruise.

From Iquitos, you also have the option of an adventure-category cruise aboard La Perla. Although La Perla offers simpler accommodation, the cruise still offers comfortable suites and excellent guided tours.

The Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve

Another area of exceptional wildlife near Iquitos is called the Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve.

The reserve offers a higher amount of accessible higher-ground forest for guided rainforest walks to see some fantastic animals and tall emergent trees.

The reserve was initially established to protect the range of a rare bald-headed primate named the uakari. These monkeys can be seen deep in the reserve and are more unusual than the many other monkeys living in the area.

The Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve is also a great place for birdwatching. Over 600 different birds have been recorded within the reserve, including colorful toucans, macaws, tanagers, cotingas and parakeets.

The reserve contains many other fascinating animals and plants, including delicate orchids, many tall emergent trees, tamandua anteaters, giant river otters, tapir and more. Camera traps placed by the Tahuayo Lodge, a top-rated lodge for visiting the reserve, have even captured images of resident and visiting jaguars.

The Tahuayo Lodge offers custom itineraries and a private guide for exploring the incredible biodiversity of the Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve.

Howler Monkey - Iquitos Amazon

On tours over 6-days, you will visit both the main Tahuayo Lodge and the Tahuayo River Amazon Research Center located in even more pristine rainforest.

Enjoy a 1000 acre primate research grid, the largest canopy zipline in Amazonia, canoeing the reserve’s waterways and expertly guided wildlife walks. For an additional rate, you can also choose a dedicated birding guide, jungle survival and camping in Amazonia.

Differences Between the Amazon Rainforest of Peru and Brazil

Although both the Amazon Rainforest of Peru and Brazil are fantastic places to visit, there are some differences between regions.

As an example, the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest contains more claylicks than anywhere else in South America.

Studies on claylick distribution show the rainforest of Puerto Maldonado in southern Peru as having more licks than anywhere else. This not only increases your chances of seeing several different colorful macaws, parrots and parakeets, but also wild cats, including ocelots, margays and jaguar that patrol the areas.

This region of Peruvian Amazon Rainforest also offers more accessible oxbow lakes to see giant river otters, hoatzin birds, cormorants, herons and birds. You can also spot different monkeys in lakeside trees.

The northern Peruvian Amazon of Iquitos then offers the most options for luxury Amazon River cruises.

Here, you have your choice of the Delfin I, Delfin II, Zafiro, and Aria Amazon Cruises. This is therefore the best option for a luxury experience of Amazonia if you would prefer a cruise.

If you would prefer a luxury experience from a lodge, the Peruvian Amazon offers the private Amazon Villa and Tambopata Research Center in the Deluxe Suites.

The Brazilian Amazon also offers a luxury experience at the highly regarded Cristalino Lodge from the gateway town of Alta Floresta.

The Cristalino Lodge also offers two giant canopy towers for excellent rainforest observation and birding opportunities.

Finally, the Tambopata Research Center offers a 20% chance of spotting wild jaguar, which is one of the highest chances of a jaguar encounter in the Amazon Rainforest.

Recommended Tours for the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest

The gateways to visit the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil are Manaus, a port of the Amazon River and the largest city in the Amazon, and Alta Floresta in Brazil’s southern rainforest.

Floating Deck at Cristalino Lodge

Accessed from Alta Floresta and nestled in the rainforest of southern Brazil, you can find the Cristalino Lodge.

The Cristalino Lodge offers one of the most comfortable rainforest lodges in Amazonia. Enjoy a very tall canopy tower, expertly guided tours, comfortable suites and relaxation areas with wildlife-filled surroundings.

When you aren’t relaxing in the lodge itself or enjoying delicious cuisine, you will be exploring Amazonia with your professional guide. Head out on guided expeditions to find an incredible diversity of animals and plants.

The wildlife you’re likely to see on Cristalino Lodge tours includes several different monkey, colorful birds like toucans, parrots, cotingas and tanagers, and much more.

Over 500 different bird species have been seen from the lodge and there are some fantastic facilities to help you see as many as possible. Enjoy two giant canopy towers to see over the rainforest with the many birds flying over the trees.

The Tucano Cruise

Tucano Cruise, Anavilhanas National Park, Manaus, Brazil

The Tucano Amazon Cruise is an excellent cruise options from Manaus. Voyage up the Rio Negro, the Amazon’s largest tributary, to explore the Amazon Rainforest.

Because the Tucano is an expedition cruise, you will head out with naturalist guides on skiff expeditions and on rainforest walks to discover Amazonian animals and plants.

The Tucano vessel itself has been designed to get you deeper into the rainforest than other cruises, which means you have a higher chance of finding the most wildlife in the region.

Styled as a 19th Century steamship, the vessel offers a historic interior with solid wood decor, varnished panelling, and polished wooden timber flooring throughout. For accommodation, the vessel offers nine comfortable cabins with private bathrooms.

Recommended Tours for the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest

There are some excellent tours in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest. The two main gateways in Peru are Iquitos in the north as a port of the Amazon River and Puerto Maldonado for access to the incredible Manu region and Tambopata National Reserve.

Some of the top recommended experiences include:

The Delfin II Cruise

Delfin II - Suite

The Delfin II offers a luxury cruise of the Amazon River from Iquitos in Peru’s northern rainforest.

Enjoy delicious cuisine, very comfortable suites and relaxation areas, and excellent guided tours to see iconic animals, trees and plants.

There are different suite types to enjoy aboard the Delfin II. These include the 4 Master Suites at the front of the vessel for the largest suite category, which also offers incredible views from the front of the vessel as you head deep into Amazonia.

Aboard the Delfin II, you will cruise the wildlife rich Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. As one of Peru’s largest protected areas, the Pacaya Samiria offers astounding levels of diversity.

Head into the rainforest to explore the waterways on skiff expeditions and trail walks over the dry season. Your guide will be pointing out the interesting animals and plants as you explore the Amazon. On these expeditions, you’re likely to see toucans, colorful macaws, several different monkeys, orchids, tall emergent trees and hopefully some lesser seen animals and plants.

Aria Luxury Cruise, Peru

The Aria Amazon Cruise offers a luxury cruise of the Amazon with longer itineraries than the Delfin vessels.

The Aria features a beautiful black hull, elegant interiors and offers delicious cuisine in their window-wrapped dining room.

As you cruise deep into Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, you will enjoy incredible scenery from your comfortable suite. Guests aboard the Aria frequently mention that some favorite moments were simply laying on their comfortable beds and looking out their floor-to-ceiling suite window.

While on expeditions from the main vessel, your skilled Amazon guide will be helping you find many colorful birds, such as toucans, cotingas, tanagers, parrots, macaws and parakeets. You are also likely to find several different monkeys, tamandua anteaters, two different sloths, caiman crocodilians, orchids and delicate tree frogs.

Of course, the beautiful scenery of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is another main attraction.

The vessel itself is decorated with polished timber floors and large windows throughout. Your suite then has a California king size bed and a comfortable window-side daybed. The elegant ensuite is then fitted with rain showers and organic bath products.

La Perla Amazon Cruise

La Perla Cruise, Iquitos, Peru

As an adventure-category cruise, La Perla offers simpler accommodation than the others mentioned. However, accommodation is comfortable and there are relaxation areas throughout the vessel to admire the rainforest.

From La Perla Cruise, enjoy small-group expeditions from the main vessel into Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Your guide will help you to see the many colorful birds, sloths, different monkeys, caiman crocodilians and many other animals and plants.

You can enjoy either 3-night or 6-night itineraries aboard La Perla Amazon Cruise. Travel deep into Amazonia as you explore the Yarapa River, Ucayali River, Maranon River, and Pacaya Samiria. The rainforest surrounding these tributaries offers an incredible diversity of wildlife and beautiful scenery.

Tambopata Research Center - Tambopata, Puerto Maldonado

The Tambopata Research Center offers one of the deepest lodges in the Amazon Rainforest. Not only this, but recent upgrades have turned this lodge into one of the most comfortable deep rainforest lodges.

Choose from a range of suite options and leave the lodge each day with your professional rainforest guide.

There are many rainforest trails to enjoy from the Tambopata Research Center. Your guide will be helping you spot spider monkeys, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, capuchins, peccary, and many other animals and plants.

A main attraction near the Tambopata Research Center is a very large macaw claylick where guests can observe hundreds of macaws at the clay. Several of Peru’s large and colorful parrots gather at the clay, which also increases your chances of seeing predatory cats, such as margays, ocelots and even jaguar.

Guests at the Tambopata Research Center also have a 20% chance of seeing wild jaguar by the river. In addition to these incredible wildlife spectacles, enjoy beautiful scenery of the Tambopata region, delicious food, and comfortable accommodation.

The Tahuayo Lodge, Peru

The Tahuayo Lodge offers a fantastic experience of the Amazon Rainforest from Iquitos in northern Peru. Enjoy a custom itinerary and private guide as standard to explore the wildlife-rich Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve.

On tours of 6-days or more from the Tahuayo Lodge, you will experience both the main lodge and the Tahuayo River Amazon Research Center. The research center is located in even more pristine rainforest where you can see some fantastic wildlife. It’s from here that you stand the best chance of spotting the rarely sighted uakari monkeys, which were a reason for the reserve’s foundation.

Behind the Tahuayo River Amazon Research Center is a 1,000 acre primate research grid, which researchers are using to study reserve wildlife. This also offers you some fantastic trails and a better chance of spotting wildlife displaying normal behaviors.

Enjoy rainforest walks scouting for several different monkeys, colorful birds, different reptiles and amphibians, and caiman crocodiles on nocturnal tours. You will also experience the reserve on canoe tours, motorised boats, the large canopy towers and zipline.

Refugio Amazonas - Peru's Rainforest near Puerto Maldonado

The Refugio Amazonas Lodge is a great option for shorter tours in the Amazon Rainforest. Nestled in the buffer zone of Tambopata National Reserve, enjoy fantastic tours to see many different monkeys, colorful birds, giant trees and different flowers.

The lodge offers a choice of accommodation options, including some luxury suites. Enjoy delicious cuisine, different relaxation areas and cultural attractions. You will then enjoy morning and afternoon guided exploration of the surrounding Amazon Rainforest.

The lodge has found that this area is a preferred nesting site of harpy eagles, which means the lodge offers one of the highest chances of seeing the magnificent birds, as they nest in the nearby ironwood trees.

Not only a great lodge for shorter experience of 3 or 4-days, the Refugio Amazonas Lodge is also a great lodge for a family rainforest vacation. This is due to the comfort of the lodge and the childrens’ trail, which communicates rainforest information in a child friendly way.

  • This trip involves a lot of walking to see the sites, and if you do the Inca trail, there'll be strenuous hiking. The trip is recommended for those with a moderate level of fitness but there are also a few different trail options to suit your interests and physical capabilities. Please bring durable footwear suitable for hiking. See the ‘Packing’ section of the Essential Trip Information for more.
  • For many of the stops along the tour, you'll have very basic accommodation. This includes the two homestays in rural Peru, the amazon eco-lodge and camping along the Inca Trail (if you do this option). There'll be no power in these places, some won't have showers and hot water.

See the iconic Plaza Mayor with its imposing Cathedral on foot, then board a local bus bound for Paracas. The bus may stop about three or four times along the way during the 4-hour journey. This morning, wildlife enthusiasts might like to visit the Ballestas Islands in Paracas National Reserve for a chance to spot pelicans, red-footed boobies and flamingos on a 2-hour boat tour. Otherwise, take it easy with some more self-paced sightseeing in Paracas before the drive to one of the world's most mysterious archaeological sites – the Nazca Lines – a group of geoglyphs in the soil of the Nazca Desert, created between 500 BCE and 500 CE. Along the way, you’ll stop in the town of Huacachina. This little settlement sits beside a small lake with dramatic sand dunes. Here, maybe go sandboarding or simply enjoy the photo opportunities. Several local operators offer flights over the lines and there have been safety issues in the past. If you wish to book a scenic flight today, your leader can only assist you with companies that Intrepid Travel has risk assessed and deemed safe. Your leader is specifically prohibited from recommending or assisting in booking this activity through any other operators, including transfers to and from other operators. To ensure you don’t miss out, this activity is now available to be pre-booked, just speak to your booking agent.

This morning after breakfast, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the eerie desert graveyard of Chauchilla, where the arid conditions have naturally interred the remains of the Nazca people buried here. Tonight, you'll board an overnight bus from Nazca to Arequipa.

  • Chauchilla Cemetery Tour

Your travel time today will be approximately 10 hours.

There are 160° recline seats on the bus and you’ll have a reserved seat in the comfort class.

Arrive at Arequipa this morning, check into your hotel room, refresh and enjoy some breakfast before you venture out for the day. Standing at the foot of El Misti Volcano and oozing Spanish colonial charm, Arequipa vies with Cusco for the title of Peru's most attractive city. Built out of a pale volcanic rock called sillar, the old buildings dazzle in the sun, giving the city its nickname – the White City. The main plaza, with its cafes and nearby cathedral, is a lovely place to while away the day. You have free time today, so maybe wander the main plaza and explore the cathedral, many cafes and eateries. You may like to visit the Andean Sanctuaries Museum, which houses Peru’s famous Ice Maiden – the Inca mummy of a girl who died in the 1440s.

Your tour leader will explain the differences between them. You’ll also stop for breaks, photo opportunities and to try some local coca tea. Your travel time today will be approximately 5 hours.

When stopping off at Patapama, you’ll likely experience some shortness of breath. This is nothing to worry about as it’s a short stop and the bus will quickly descend to a lower altitude. Remember to prepare for altitude sickness before the trip. The accommodation in Chivay is very basic, has no heating and can sometimes be noisy. There are ensuite toilets, and you may request extra blankets on a chilly night.

This morning visit the Colca Canyon, more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, the Colca has some breathtaking views. Here you’ll see terraced crops that have been cultivated since pre-Inca times by local villages. This is also the home of the Andean condor. Witness one of the world’s largest flying birds soar above and below you from a prime viewing point above the canyon.

Later you’ll board a bus to Puno, it’s a long drive, but the dramatic views of Peru’s highlands – the Altiplano – make it an exceptionally scenic one too. Puno is located on the shores of Lake Titicaca, which you’ll explore in the coming days. Upon arrival, take the change to get acquainted with the town. Puno is known as Peru’s folklore capital, this is due in no small part to its thriving indigenous cultures, including the Aymara and Quechua. If you’re lucky enough to arrive during a festival, you’ll be treated to an elaborate parade of costumes and dances.

  • Colca Canyon -Guided tour

Puno continues to experience some occasional ongoing political unrest. With safety always our priority, on some departures, you may need to use alternative transportation to avoid affected areas. Your tour leader will advise of any specific changes to transport or the itinerary in this destination that needs to be put in place.

This morning, you’ll take a tour of the immense Lake Titicaca by motorboat, stopping at the floating Uros Islands that look like they could come from a Pixar or Studio Ghibli movie. Built by the Uros people to protect themselves from encroaching Inca forces hundreds of years ago, the islands are constructed from many layers of totora reeds that grow in the shallows of the lake. Get a closer look at contemporary life on the shores of the lake with a homestay in a local community. Help your host family with their daily activities, try out a few words in the Quechua language and maybe even join a local soccer game to make some friends on the makeshift pitch. Tonight, sit down and swap stories with your hosts, who will cook you a feast full of traditional Peruvian favourites.

  • Lake Titicaca - Boat tour & Homestay

Your homestay tonight is a traditional mud brick house. Rooms have beds and many blankets, and there are shared drop toilets, but no showers.

This morning after breakfast, board another motorboat and cruise to Taquile Island – known for the intricate, hand-knitted textiles the locals produce. Here, knitting is strictly a male domain and women do the spinning. It's a great place to pick up some high-quality, locally knitted goods, with the added bonus of supporting the local community. Then, take an hour uphill trek to the main area of the island, where you can shop for handicrafts. After, descend about 500 steps to the boat. Return to Puno, where you might like to gather your group and find a local watering hole to enjoy a drink or two – try a chilcano or indulge in another pisco sour.

Your travel time today will be about 4 hours.

Take a scenic bus ride across the Altiplano towards Cusco – the continent’s oldest continuously inhabited city. Here, colonial buildings are built on foundations from ancient Inca times. Spend some time acclimatising to the high altitude of 3450 m, then set out to discover some of Cusco's lesser-known sights on a guided walking tour. Visit the facade of Qoricancha temple, San Pedro market, the main square, 12 Angled Stone, Regocijo Square and San Blas Square. End the walking tour at Cusco's Chocolate Museum where you'll get to sample a dissolute cup of hot chocolate made from local cacao beans. Get ready for an unforgettable day exploring the depths of the jungle! Set out on a half-day trek guided by local experts on the area's flora and fauna. Learn from your guides about the medicinal and practical uses for some of the plants that grow here, which Indigenous people have been studying and using for thousands of years. On your walk, keep an eye out for rainbow macaws and butterflies, and listen for the barking call of the peccaries and chattering of monkeys that call the jungle home. This part of the Amazon is also known to house capybaras, giant otters and jabirus, so keep your eyes peeled for these exotic creatures. Return to the lodge for lunch and some free time to relax. Once the sun goes down, venture out on a night walk in search of some of the jungle's nocturnal inhabitants (caimans, jaguars and anacondas).

Today’s jungle walk is about 11 km. The paths can get quite muddy, and the walk is quite tiring for some, but well worth it!

Leave behind the natural wonders of the Amazon and return to Puerto Maldonado where a short flight will take the group back to Lima. One of our local representatives will meet you at the airport and will accompany you back to the hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore more of Lima's sights and maybe do some souvenir shopping. Amazon River Cruises In Brazil

To cruise through the Amazon rainforest in Brazil is like hitting the reset button – prepare for all your senses to be switched on as you get to the pulsing heart of life on Earth. Brazil holds a vast 60% of this extraordinary jungle, and with so much of the majestic Amazon river to explore it is best navigated on one of our wonderful Brazil Amazon River cruises. Life in the Brazilian Amazon jungle is dictated by the low and high water seasons – the dry season revealing some stunning river beaches and enabling hikes past the rainforest’s giant trees, and the high water levels and flooded forest of the rainy season rendering the wilderness a lush and verdant labyrinth to meander by boat. Brimming with abundant wildlife and endless adventure, an Amazon cruise in Brazil is unforgettable.

Manaus is the starting point for most Brazil Amazon cruises. Itineraries range from 2 to 10 days in length, taking in such highlights as Lago Janauari Ecological Park, Anavilhanas Archipelago , Jaú National Park, and the famous Meeting of the Waters. Further downstream is the city of Santarém , is a lesser-visited but no less spectacular Amazon cruise embarkation point known as the ‘Pearl of the Tapajós’, with highlights such as Alter do Chão, with its Lago Verde (Green Lake) – a huge lagoon home to a myriad of animals explorable by canoe or stand-up paddleboard – and nearby picturesque white-sand island of Ilha do Amor (the Island of Love), which is especially striking in low water season from August to December.

12 best Panama Canal cruises for a bucket-list trip

Donna Heiderstadt

A Panama Canal transit is a rite of passage for many cruise lovers. Experiencing this marvel of early 20th-century engineering appeals to those with a wide array of interests, from history and politics to colonial architecture and wildlife. Built by the U.S. government between 1903 and 1914, this 50-mile waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans revolutionized shipping by creating an expedited route for the transit of cargo and, ultimately, cruise ship passengers.

Panama Canal itineraries are offered by almost every cruise line. Thanks to a 2016 canal expansion project, a third set of locks can now accommodate larger vessels. It's possible to cruise the Panama Canal on ships of all sizes (from 148 guests to more than 3,000) on itineraries that range from a week in the sun to a six-month world cruise.

Some ships sail a full transit of the canal, from the Atlantic to the Pacific or vice versa. These one-way journeys between Miami or Fort Lauderdale and Los Angeles or San Diego visit ports in Central America, South America, Mexico and California.

Others sail only a partial transit, entering the locks from the Atlantic and cruising into Lake Gatun before turning around and exiting again. These itineraries, sailing round-trip from Florida ports, combine the canal experience with island hopping in the Caribbean.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

The array of options means that a Panama Canal cruise experience is possible even if you're short on time or have a limited budget — and chances are high that your favorite cruise line offers one or more itineraries. Most sailings attract couples, typically retirees, but if the timing is right, a Panama Canal cruise can also be a great multigenerational experience.

Here are a dozen of the best Panama Canal cruises to consider.

Holland America's 14- to 17-night Panama Canal cruises

peru brazil cruises

Holland America offers a variety of Panama Canal cruises , but the most popular itineraries span 14 to 17 nights. They offer a full transit between Fort Lauderdale or Miami and San Diego, Seattle or Vancouver, British Columbia, or vice versa and are offered on multiple ships, including Koningsdam, Zuiderdam, Zaandam, Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam. These sailings call on Cartagena, Colombia; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; and Huatulco and Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Longer sailings also call on several Caribbean islands.

Who should go : Holland America ships sailing a full transit are popular with retired couples who appreciate the cruise line's consistency and good value. All four ships accommodate between 1,432 and 2,650 passengers and offer signature onboard experiences that include the Greenhouse Spa and the World Stage for evening production shows. The larger Eurodam, Koningsdam and Nieuw Amsterdam feature additional specialty dining options, such as Tamarind and Nami Sushi, as well as popular music venues B.B. King's Blues Club and Billboard Onboard.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' 16-night Los Angeles-to-Miami cruise

Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' newest ship, Seven Seas Grandeur, debuted in November 2023 and will transit the Panama Canal on several occasions in the next few years. The 16-night Miami-to-Los Angeles (Dec. 13-29, 2024) and 16-night Los Angeles-to-Miami (Jan. 8-23, 2025) transits offer luxurious all-inclusive pampering, plus port calls in Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas and Acapulco, Mexico; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Corinto, Nicaragua; Panama City; Cartagena, Colombia; and George Town, Grand Cayman.

Plan even further ahead for Grandeur's 22-night Miami-to-Los Angeles transit (Jan. 3-25, 2026) to enjoy additional Caribbean ports of call. From Jan. 25 to Feb. 9, 2026, the ship will sail a 16-night Panama Canal transit from Los Angeles to Miami with an itinerary similar to the 2024 and early 2025 cruises.

Who should go : This itinerary can be a wonderful splurge for a couple seeking to celebrate a milestone anniversary or birthday in a memorable way on a luxurious new ship. Prices start at a hefty $10,099 per person for a spacious balcony suite, but they also include airfare, transfers, gratuities, dining and beverages, Wi-Fi and shore excursions — meaning you'll hardly have any other vacation expenses.

Celebrity Cruises' 11-night Panama Canal & Southern Caribbean cruise

peru brazil cruises

For a Panama Canal experience that begins and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Celebrity Cruises ' 11-night Panama Canal & Southern Caribbean itinerary is a great option. There's still time to book the Dec. 2, 2024, cruise or the half-dozen almost identical sailings that follow through April 2025. All sailings are aboard the 3,260-passenger Celebrity Beyond and visit Cartagena, Colombia; Colon, Panama; Oranjestad, Aruba; Kralendjik, Bonaire; and George Town, Grand Cayman (Willemstad, Curacao, replaces Grand Cayman on some 2025 sailings).

Who should go : Celebrity Beyond and its Edge-series sister ships appeal to millennials, Gen Xers and young-at-heart baby boomers who appreciate innovative design, entertainment and dining options. The ships are geared toward couples or groups of friends, but families with older teens might also enjoy the onboard vibe. There are no splash pools or waterslides for younger kids, although calls on three Caribbean islands offer aquatic fun.

Windstar Cruises' 7-night Costa Rica & Panama Canal cruise

To explore the Panama Canal region in a relaxed manner aboard an intimate motorized sailing yacht or small ship, check out Windstar Cruises' seven-night Costa Rica & Panama Canal itinerary. Bookable on more than a dozen dates from November 2024 through March 2026, the itinerary is offered aboard 148-passenger Wind Star or Wind Spirit (in 2024 and 2025) and 312-passenger Star Pride (in 2026). The ship will travel from Colon, Panama, to Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica (or vice versa), transiting the canal. Passengers can visit Panama City and Isla Parida in Panama, plus Golfo Dolce and Quepos (for Manuel Antonio National Park) in Costa Rica.

Who should go : Fans of small-ship cruising who enjoy a casual onboard ambience, are interested in nature and wildlife and wish to sample the regional flavors of Central America should consider a Windstar cruise . All accommodations on the sailing yachts are in snug yet well-designed staterooms with windows but no balconies. Wind Star and Wind Spirit are cozy and social four-deck ships, each featuring a pool and pool bar, a lounge and two restaurants. Star Pride is the better option for those who prefer a more spacious suitelike cabin with a balcony and a larger bathroom.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 12-night South America: Peru, Colombia & Ecuador cruise

peru brazil cruises

There's no "Panama Canal" in this itinerary's name, but Norwegian Cruise Line 's 12-night South America: Peru, Colombia & Ecuador cruise (Feb. 27-March 11, 2026) does a full canal transit as it sails from Miami to Lima, Peru. The 2,402-passenger Norwegian Jade will visit historic Santa Marta and Cartagena in Colombia; Panama City; Manta, Ecuador; and Trujillo and Lima in Peru.

Who should go : Couples and friends interested in experiencing not just a Panama Canal transit but some of the top coastal experiences along the Pacific coast of South America should choose this itinerary. Norwegian Jade is an older, smaller vessel that was refurbished in 2022 and features a top deck more conducive to sunning than thrill rides. The ship also has a surprising number of restaurants for its size: two main dining rooms, a buffet restaurant, a pub-style bar and grill, an Asian restaurant and an outdoor grill on a complimentary basis, plus six specialty dining venues (including a steakhouse and venues showcasing French, Italian and Japanese cuisines) for an added fee.

Oceania's 16-night Miami-to-Los Angeles cruise

Oceania Cruises ' 1,200-passenger Vista — which debuted in May 2023 as the first new-build ship in Oceania's fleet in more than a decade — will offer back-to-back, 16-night Miami-to-Los Angeles (Jan. 8-24, 2025) and Los Angeles-to-Miami (Jan. 24-Feb. 9, 2025) itineraries. Both sailings visit six countries with port calls that include George Town, Grand Cayman; Cartagena, Colombia; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Corinto, Nicaragua; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; and Acapulco, Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada, Mexico. (The second sailing visits San Diego instead of Ensenada.)

Who should go : Oceania's newest ship offers a great compromise between a small and medium-size vessel and is ideal for those seeking a premium cruise experience with casual sophistication. Older couples especially will appreciate the ship's elegant cabin decor in soft hues of wheat and seagrass, mix of grand and intimate spaces and wide array of dining options. (Two new and noteworthy venues on Vista include Ember for inventive American cuisine and Aquamar Kitchen for wellness-focused breakfast, lunch and dinner.) A more immersive mixology program features curated cocktail menus, indulgent pairing experiences and specialty beverage carts.

Cunard's 26-night Southampton-to-San Francisco cruise

peru brazil cruises

Cunard's brand-new 2,996-passenger ship Queen Anne, which debuts in May 2023, will make both its first transatlantic crossing and its first Panama Canal transit on this historic 26-night Southampton-to-San Francisco sailing (Jan. 9-Feb. 4, 2025). The ship will first cross the Atlantic and then overnight in New York before calling on Aruba, transiting the canal and visiting Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. It will conclude with an overnight in San Francisco.

The winter transatlantic crossing might not be right for everyone, but the second half of this voyage explores warm-weather destinations with plenty of relaxing sea days for sunning, reading, taking dance lessons and enjoying expert lectures.

Who should go : British cruise line Cunard appeals mainly to older travelers who savor the line's formal traditions. This cruise is for you if you enjoy afternoon tea, dressing up for dinner, gala evenings and dancing to big-band orchestras. This particular itinerary appeals to retirees who wish to visit several cruise regions in one sailing.

If this longer voyage is sold out, consider the 138-day Viking World Cruise (departing Dec. 19, 2025), also on Viking Sky. This sailing, which travels from Fort Lauderdale to London (Greenwich), visits 28 countries and transits the Panama Canal on the eighth day.

Who should go : With cruise fares that start at $79,995 and $59,995 per person, respectively, these extended adventures at sea require a luxury budget.
