Meanwhile, Daniel Kessler recently responded to New Order bandmember Peter Hook’ s past claim that he applied to become  Interpol ‘s new bassist following the departure of Carlos Dengler.

Dengler departed the NYC indie outfit back in 2010 , having been a member since the group’s formation in 1997. Interpol continued as a trio, though their live shows feature additional touring musicians.

Shortly after Dengler quit, former New Order bassist Hook told  LA Weekly  that he’d “applied” to replace the ex-member but claimed he “didn’t get picked”. The musician added: “I applied as Peter Hook, and they turned me down.”

Hook told the outlet at the time that Interpol had released “an internet application form to be a bass player”. The comments came after the interviewer noted that the New Yorkers had a “Joy Division-sounding” style.

Responding to the comparison, Hook said: “I don’t mind it, it has to be taken as a compliment.”

Speaking to  NME  for the ‘Does Rock ‘N’ Roll Kill Braincells?!’ quiz  last month, guitarist Kessler said he wasn’t aware that Hook had put himself forward for the role some 12 years ago.

“I heard some weird rumblings as far as the story and the rumour behind it, but I don’t think I even knew that he supposedly applied online,” he explained.

“I don’t even know to whom or where, but we never received anything and we never had such a discussion.”

Things to Do

Music and concerts, music and concerts | concert review: pet shop boys and new order fill the armory with fans giddy for synthpop classics.

Pet Shop Boys in concert

Pet Shop Boys and New Order announced their joint North American tour back in February 2020, just weeks before the world went into pandemic shutdown. Two and a half years later, they finally made it to Minneapolis – one of just 13 shows on the tour – and it was well worth the wait.

Both acts emerged from England in the ’80s with unique takes on pop music. Pet Shop Boys made songs that were witty, arch and quite gay (even though lead singer Neil Tennant didn’t publicly come out until 1994 and keyboardist Chris Lowe has never discussed his sexuality). New Order, meanwhile, rose out of the ashes of the post punk band Joy Division (whose lead singer Ian Curtis took his own life the day before the band’s first U.S. tour) and fused guitars and a bass played like a guitar with electronics.

The combined draw of the two acts – who are swapping spots each night – allowed them to play a significantly larger-than-usual venue. PSB’s three previous local shows took place at the State and Orpheum theaters, while New Order’s sole Minnesota concert of the 21st century happened at the Palace Theatre in 2018.

Sunday night, Pet Shop Boys took the stage just before 7:30 p.m. after a set from legendary DJ Paul Oakenfold (who returned for a second set before New Order). At 68, Tennant is the oldest musician on the tour, but he still exudes youthful energy. And, as always, Lowe played the role of stoic sidekick, mostly standing still behind his keyboards and barely acknowledging anything going around him, including the crowd.

Over the past 36 years, Pet Shop Boys have maintained a prolific career with 14 studio albums, more than 70 singles and a host of other projects. But the pair had never mounted a greatest hits tour until this summer in Europe. The current dates cut the 26-song set list down to 19 tracks, presumably to match New Order’s 80-minute running time.

That meant some true PSB classics – “Go West,” “What Have I Done to Deserve This” and “New York City Boy” among them – didn’t make the cut Sunday. But the set still pulsed with constant energy, from the clever “Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money)” to the sordid “It’s a Sin.” The duo’s covers were a lot of fun as well, including “Where the Streets Have No Name (I Can’t Take My Eyes Off You),” “Always on My Mind,” “It’s Alright” and Stephen Sondheim’s “Losing My Mind” (the sole b-side of the night).

High points in a set full of them included the lush “Love Comes Quickly” and a fierce “Domino Dancing” complete with the audience singing the choruses. Tennant barely took a breath between songs, giving the show a real forward-driving momentum that kept going until the encore of “West End Girls” and “Being Boring.”

New Order – whose live show was notoriously hit or miss back in the day – didn’t have quite the same urgency and lead singer Bernard Sumner has lost some of his voice. At times, the 66-year-old yelped out his lyrics and at other times attempted to slip into a croon with limited success.

The band more than made it for it, though, both recreating some of the most precise songs of the era and occasionally adding a new spin. And bassist Tom Chapman did an admirable job of tackling Peter Hook’s truly iconic sound. (Hook left the group in 2007 and now does terrific solo tours devoted to entire New Order and Joy Division albums.) Oh, and they were loud, too, giving songs like “Blue Monday” and “Age of Content” a real arena rock heft.

In addition to a curated selection of tracks from New Order’s ’80s heyday – “Subculture” and “Temptation” were stand outs – they played a pair of songs from their most recent album, 2015’s “Music Complete,” but unfortunately the epic banger “People on the High Line” (the band’s best song in decades) wasn’t one of them.

Review: new order and pet shop boys deliver invigoratingly nostalgic british dance music in minneapolis.

"Paul Oakenfold. New Order. Pet Shop Boys. Minneapolis, what have you done to deserve this?" Pet Shop Boys singer Neil Tennant sarcastically asked a full house Sunday night at the Armory in Minneapolis.

Well, we sent the Minnesota Vikings across the pond to play the New Orleans Saints Sunday, and they gave London a dramatic game of American football.

What did Tennant and the lineup of veteran British musicians do for Minneapolis in return? They delivered a satisfyingly nostalgic and invigorating evening of mostly 1980s British dance music in a venue known for presenting contemporary electronic dance music acts.

On their Unity Tour, Pet Shop Boys and New Order are each playing 90 minutes and taking turns as headliners, with Oakenfold as the opener and intermission DJ.

As always, Tennant and partner Chris Lowe, the keyboardist, were delightfully arty purveyors of their pop-dance music. Their presentation had visual themes, whether it was the two of them performing under separate streetlights or their series of outfits of black and white. Once a video screen lifted, the duo's three other musicians were revealed, accompanied by constantly moving video images on various screens.

Never known for his dynamic stage presence, Tennant, 68, a reserved former music journalist, animated his reverb-boosted voice with arm and hand gestures. But Pet Shop Boys music is really about the buoyant melodies and incessant beats that seduce you into a feeling of unfettered freedom.

PSB's biggest hit, 1984's "West End Girls," was marred by distorted bass played by Lowe on keyboards. But there was no arguing with two 1987 tunes — the explosive, swirling "It's a Sin" and "Heart," which built to a banger — and 2019's "Dreamland," a darker-toned change of pace.

Closing the four-hour program at the Armory, New Order offered post-punk dance-rock from throughout its career, including two tunes from Joy Division, the group from which it spawned after the 1980 suicide of frontman Ian Curtis.

On Sunday, New Order singer/guitarist Bernard Sumner, 66, looked like a bespectacled accountant donning T-shirt, jeans and sneakers for his weekend hobby band. Moreover, his dad dance moves might have made his children cringe. But New Order's music kept a mostly over-40 crowd dancing to the driving disco-rock, complemented by strobes, lasers, lights in sync with the beat and a barrage of cool video images.

Highlights were the 1980s nuggets, the surging "Sub-culture" and the emphatic and urgent "Temptation," along with 2015's unrelentingly forceful "Restless," 2020's contagious dance-pop "Be a Rebel" and, of course, the encore of Joy Division's 1980 hit "Love Will Tear Us Apart."

Oakenfold, a celebrated DJ and remixer, kept the crowd partying with a blend of hits by Rihanna and Technotronic along with club gems by Acraze and DJ Dai, though he somehow managed to spin Prince's "When Doves Cry" twice back-to-back before segueing into the Purple One's "Kiss" as his finale.

Jon Bream has been a music critic at the Star Tribune since 1975, making him the longest tenured pop critic at a U.S. daily newspaper. He has attended more than 8,000 concerts and written four books (on Prince, Led Zeppelin, Neil Diamond and Bob Dylan). Thus far, he has ignored readers’ suggestions that he take a music-appreciation class.

New Order & Pet Shop Boys Kick Off Long Awaited ‘Unity’ Nort American Tour In Toronto

?????????????

  • By Ryan Dillon

Last night (September 17), two of modern rock’s most influential bands kicked off a long-awaited headlining tour at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage, which was originally supposed to happen in 2020. Electro-pop duo Pet Shop Boys and the synth-driven Joy Division offshoot New Order are taking their generational talents across North America. The Unity Tour has the two influential groups switching off headlining positions at each stop on the tour as they continue their month-long run through North America. Pet Shop Boys started things off as the opener at the tour’s first stop last night.

Pet Shop Boys have been one of the most dominating forces in dance music since their debut in 1984. Their decades-long run has culminated in 14 studio albums and critical acclaim across the world. At their Toronto gig, the duo performed some of their most beloved B-sides that mainly came from the first half of their career with cuts from their seminal debut Please . They started the night off with “Suburbia” and “Opportunities” from the aforementioned debut and then went into “Rent” from their 1987 album Actually . The electro-pop pioneers also went outside of their discography for covers of “Losing My Mind” by Stephen Sondheim, “You Were Always on My Mind” by Gwen McCrae, and “It’s Alright” by Sterling Void.

After the tragic passing of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis, the remaining members of the band set out on another creative effort. With the addition of keyboardist Gillian Gilbert, the band’s trailblazing take on post-punk took an electronic turn and the newly formed New Order would become pioneers for the genre. For their first headlining show of the tour, the band’s setlist primarily focused on their earlier years. A large majority of New Order’s 14-song setlist was taken from the 1987 compilation album Substance , performing hits like “Ceremony”and “Bizzare Love Triangle”. The band paid homage to their beginnings by closing out their set by performing “Love Will Tear Us Apart” from their days as Joy Division.

This string of shows has the two electronic juggernauts stopping in major cities in the U.S. like Boston, Philadelphia, and New York. The first weekend of October will have the pair of bands in Los Angeles for two back-to-back shows.

Check out full setlists and and footage from last night’s show below:

X 10 Year Anniversary Show

pet shop new order tour

Where had the Pet Shop Boys been all my life? Honestly, everywhere. I remember being 9 years old, listening to “ What Have I Done to Deserve This? ” on my Sony Dream Machine clock radio while leafing through X-Men comics. At 20, my bandmate thought the cover of the new Pet Shop Boys album, “ Nightlife ,” looked cool enough to suggest that we pose for our own record sleeve on the D.C. Metro. In my mid-20s, I loved a girl who loved “ West End Girls .” Across my 30s, I danced to the music of the Pet Shop Boys at nightclubs, at weddings, at karaoke, at birthday parties, at karaoke birthday parties — the kinds of places where everyone is happy. All of this, and I never got fully onboard. Never bought a record. Never called myself a fan. I was totally fine with allowing the Pet Shop Boys to appear in my life this way, like perfect weather or a tax refund.

Last year, fate started pushing a little harder. At an impromptu social gathering in the springtime, apropos of nothing, my friend Kevin pressed a book into my hands. It was “ Pet Shop Boys, Literally ,” a 358-page recounting of the duo’s 1989 world tour. “ You need to read this .” I set it on the bookshelf, where it remained untouched until December, when my wife took me to the movies to see “ All of Us Strangers ,” a British metaphysical romance starring Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal. In one scene, a reunited family listens to the Pet Shop Boys perform “ Always on My Mind ” on television while decorating their Christmas tree — and for me, that’s where things got especially metaphysical. The music made me feel like I was reliving a childhood memory that wasn’t mine. I sat with that sensation for roughly three more months, until finally, on a rainy March morning that felt properly drab and Thatchery, I cued up the Pet Shop Boys’ 1986 debut album, “Please,” and stepped into a new world otherwise known as the rest of my life.

I’m telling two stories here. The first one is about how it might take more than three decades to get into your new favorite band; about how none of our tastes are permanent; about how music is always kicking around out there, waiting for us to get involved. The second story is about the Pet Shop Boys, who are precisely the kind of group that allows all of those things to happen.

Here’s what I know so far. The Pet Shop Boys aren’t a conceptual pop group so much as a principled one. Not an idea. A practice. Formed under the cloudy skies of Margaret Thatcher’s England, they made highly erudite synth-pop imbued with the loneliness of the AIDS crisis and the yearning for a future that wasn’t promised. From go, singer Neil Tennant understood pop lyricism as a science, but he deployed it like an art, assigning brilliant words to beautiful melodies that often longed to be belted, but that he instead chose to sing with delicate discipline and care, as if to remind the world of music’s value. Tennant’s creative partner, Chris Lowe, is a craftsman who has always kept sheen within the bounds of good taste, and together, the duo’s ongoing awareness to contemporary pop trends remains evidenced by their refusal to chase them.

The Style section

Equal parts Kraftwerk and show tunes, their music has always felt unique and reliable. There are no bad Pet Shop Boys albums, many great ones, and a few that will change your life, (sad things will feel sweeter, but sweet things will also feel a little sadder), and whenever it begins to feel as if they’re singing only to you, it’s important to remember that the band’s self-described “imperial phase” of the late ’80s explains why they rule eternally at karaoke and wedding receptions. Yes, the Pet Shop Boys were once famous enough to roll through the airport accompanied by bodyguards whose blazer pockets were stuffed with pre-autographed photos, but all phases must end. “Like silent movie stars in ’60s Hollywood,” Tennant sings on the group’s new album, “nobody knows who you are in the hipster neighborhood.”

Aptly, artfully, hilariously, they’ve named that new album “Nonetheless,” continuing an unbroken tradition of one-word album titles that often serve as meta-commentary on the state of the group. “Nonetheless” is an irrefutable pop album, mindful of its details, aware of its handsomeness, with Tennant musing on obsolescence, coming of age, isolation, communion, devotion, loss and the sublime pleasures of pop itself — pop songs about pop songs from two minds who have earned their place on that Möbius loop.

Is it wrong to listen for novelty from a group this consistent? “Nonetheless” might skew a smidge more songwriterly than dance floor, but Tennant and Lowe have been exploding the mutual exclusivity of those two modes for their whole trip. They do it right out of the gate here, opening the album with “ Loneliness ,” an existential disco plunge that’s quick to remind us how “nobody can live without love.” Those words are aimed straight at your hurting heart, but also at the entire world — proof that Pet Shop Boys music remains a standing invitation. If, like me, you’ve waited decades to RSVP, maybe this is your way in. Or hey, maybe next time. “Why am I dancing when I’m so alone?” Tennant asks from the highest heights of this album, confirming that his sadness-sweetness shell game has no expiration date. His voice sounds as lonely as ever, but he’s left the door wide open.

An earlier version of this article listed the incorrect year for the release of the Pet Shop Boys' debut album, "Please." It came out in 1986. The article has been corrected.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

How to buy new edition tickets: dates and prices compared for 2024 concert tour.

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

New Edition's Las Vegas residency is still going strong through 2024, though only a few tour dates remain. Luckily, the iconic music group has added additional tour dates and there are a few different ways to buy New Edition tickets.

New Edition began their residency at the Encore Theater in Las Vegas in February, with their stay ultimately being extended through November. After their original six shows, New Edition added two more legs for this year for a total of 10 more concert dates. Performing on their 2024 concert tour are group members Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, Johnny Gill, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe, who sing their classic hits like "Candy Girl," "Cool It Now," and "If It Isn't Love."

If you're still looking for how to buy tickets to New Edition's concerts, we've got you covered. Here's our breakdown of the R&B group's tour schedule, purchasing details, and ticket prices. You can also browse tickets and show specifics on StubHub and Vivid Seats at your leisure.

New Edition 2024 tour schedule

All six members of New Edition are returning for the remainder of the group's Las Vegas residency, which kicks off on July 3. It features seven shows from July 3 to July 13 in Las Vegas, with the third leg picking back up for three additional concert dates in October and November.

The group is also appearing at the Cincinnati Music Festival in July.

All concert times are listed in local time zones.

How to buy tickets for New Edition's 2024 concert tour

You can buy original tickets for New Edition's 2024 Las Vegas residency concert dates and music festival appearance on Ticketmaster. However, since the residency extension shows went on sale in March 2024, the quantity of remaining original tickets is limited.

Tickets can also be purchased from verified resale vendors like StubHub and Vivid Seats . You may have better luck with the variety of seating options and availability on resale sites compared to the original tickets still left.

It's also important to note that New Edition's shows at the Encore Theater in Las Vegas only permit concertgoers ages 18 and up — so be sure to bring your ID to get into the group's residency performances.

How much are New Edition's tickets?

Given the high demand for the group's remaining Las Vegas residency shows, tickets to see New Edition in 2024 are relatively expensive. Furthermore, ticket prices vary depending on each show's concert date and demand. Resale ticket prices are comparable to or cheaper than original ticket costs.

The cheapest original ticket prices on Ticketmaster begin at $175 for New Edition's Las Vegas shows on October 30 and November 1. The least expensive seats are generally in the left or right mezzanine. However, most other dates with remaining original tickets are a bit more costly, with the cheapest seats coming in at over $200.

On the other hand, original one-day Saturday tickets for New Edition's Cincinnati Music Festival performance start at only $65. This ticket also lets you see artists like Kem, Stokley, En Vogue, and Coco Jones. Check out the full line-up here .

The least expensive resale tickets available to New Edition's Las Vegas residency on StubHub start at $165 for the group's July 5 performance. Vivid Seats offers similar prices for resale tickets, as the cheapest available Las Vegas show passes begin at $165. However, both sites' base fares are slightly more expensive than the $65 original tickets for the Cincinnati Music Festival, as StubHub's begin at $72 while Vivid Seats' start at $73.
