Van Don-Quang Ninh is a renowned travel destination due to its pristine beauty and quiet beach that has not seen much tourism. 

Coming to Van Don, you can admire the scenery of mountains, forests, and blue sea that blend to create a beautiful landscape. Besides, you can also enjoy many fresh seafood dishes such as peanut worm, geoduck clam, razor clam, fish, sea shrimp, crab, etc.

The Tuan Chau tourist area has been known for a long time as one of the best international tourist areas in Vietnam. It covers 220 hectares and is only about 2 kilometers from the city of Ha Long.

In Ha Long Bay, Tuan Chau is the only island with geology that includes soil and schist. It also has long stretches of white sand, a clear blue sea, and a cool climate suitable for tourists who want to go on vacation.

While it is a relatively new region, the Quang Ninh Gate tourist area (in Binh Duong commune, Dong Trieu town) has been included in the list of Quang Ninh tourist areas you should visit since there are many interesting activities here. 

Quang Ninh Gate is a 12-hectare entertainment area with many attractions, such as ecotourism and village tourism. Each region has its own activities and facilities, such as an aquarium, a water park, a thrill park,… In addition, for those who like to spend the night, there are a lot of hotels, restaurants, and even luxury resorts here.

For Vietnamese Buddhist believers, the Yen Tu tourist area is a sacred place for pilgrimage that one must visit when coming to Quang Ninh.

The tourist area is a relic complex with 11 pagodas and hundreds of temples, towers, statues, and old trees. It is at an altitude of more than 1,000 meters and is part of the Dong Trieu mountain range 

To reach the summit of Yen Tu, you must walk 6 kilometers up thousands of stone steps. Those who like spiritual travel see this as a challenge to overcome on their way to worship Buddha. If you lack the strength to climb, there is now a cable car route that is very safe and convenient, allowing you to enjoy the panoramic view.  

The next place on the must-see list is the Thac Mo ecotourism area, which has an unspoiled landscape. Streams, waterfalls, and rivers all flow into a clear lake. This area also has a quite cool climate, so many people choose to come here to camp, bathe in the cool lake, enjoy specialties, etc.

In recent years, Co To island has become a very popular destination, attracting many tourists, especially young people, thanks to its wild beauty, clear water, and many places to take nice photos.

If you get the chance to go to Co To island, you can have fun here by taking some photos at beautiful beaches like Van Chay, Hong Van, and Thanh Lan island, renting bicycles and motorbikes to freely explore the island’s landmarks (Cau My rock, Love Road, Co To church, Uncle Ho monument), and watching the sunset from the lighthouse.

Lung Xanh tourist area is located in Uong Bi city and has a majestic beauty with high mountains, blue clouds, and white waterfalls winding along the cliffs. The waterfall is located halfway up the mountain, so you will have to climb a long way through the primeval forest. But when you get there, you will feel that the effort is worth it. At your destination, you will see a bamboo forest, strangely shaped rocks, and a long stretch of white sand that looks like a miniature beach.

The Khe Van waterfall, which comes from the Khe Van mountain range in Thong Chau, is more than a thousand meters above sea level. The waterfall has three floors, pouring down from a height of about 100 meters, creating a majestic scene of white foam mixed with moss-covered rocks. In the rainy season, when the volume of water is high, some small, clear lakes will appear at the foot of the waterfall.

The largest lake in Quang Ninh, Yen Trung Lake, is known as a “small miniature of Da Lat” due to its poetic, romantic, and dreamy scenery. The beautiful lake is in a valley between mountains and is surrounded by a lush forest.

Coming here, you can participate in a number of activities such as renting a bicycle to ride around the lake, camping overnight, team building, renting a boat to admire the lake (about 30,000 VND/hour), or taking photos at the Bridge of Love.

If you have come to Ha Long, you should definitely stop by Bai Tho Mountain, a beautiful limestone mountain in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province. The mountain is called Bai Tho (poem in Vietnamese) because there are still poems written in Chinese on it by Le Thanh Tong, which were carved on stone in 1468, and Trinh Cuong, in 1729. 

To be able to reach the top of Bai Tho Mountain, you need to go through a steep and tiring climb, so remember to bring a pair of comfortable sports shoes to avoid foot pain. But when you reach the top, all fatigue will disappear because from here you can have a panoramic view of the beautiful Ha Long Bay.

Minh Chau is a small island in Bai Tu Long Bay, Van Don district, Quang Ninh province. This place attracts a lot of tourists thanks to its long stretch of white sand, fresh air, and unspoiled beauty. If you are looking for a peaceful getaway, Minh Chau Island is a good choice.

Tra Co Beach is a tourist destination in Quang Ninh that attracts many tourists with its pristine beauty. It is also one of the beaches with the longest coastline in Vietnam (more than 15 kilometers long).

Coming here, you will feel overwhelmed by the beautiful scenery of Sa Vi Cape and Da Den Beach. You can explore nature and swim in the cool water by the deserted beach. 

The phrase “dinosaur spine” refers to the mountain ridge on the way up to landmark 1305, which is located on the border patrol road in Binh Lieu. This is one of the two landmarks located at the highest point in Quang Ninh. It is hard to reach this milestone because it requires crossing a ridge with a steep slope. If the weather is good, it can take up to 2 hours, but in the opposite situation, the road is quite perilous.

The road going up is quite attractive, covered in green grass, and shaped like the back of a dinosaur, which is why this site still attracts so many young tourists despite its dangerous terrain. Thus, if you don’t have enough energy to climb all the way up the mountain, you can sightsee at the foot and then come back.

Loi Am Pagoda is another spiritual Quang Ninh tourist attraction not to be missed. It is located on the back of Loi Am Mountain, which is the highest mountain in Ha Long Bay. The pagoda is not just a venue to worship Buddha; it is also a historical landmark mentioned in many folk stories,from the reign of King Le Thanh Tong to the period when Vietnamese fought against the French.

If you have the chance to stop by Loi Am Pagoda, remember to take a boat to cruise on Yen Lap Lake, enjoy the clear blue water, and visit some places along the way, such as Tien Well, Giai Oan Stream, Cau Lau,… 

2.9. Sa Vi Cape

Sa Vi Cape (also known as Got Cape) is the northernmost cape of Vietnam, located in Tra Co ward, Mong Cai city, Quang Ninh province. There is a majestic bas-relief of three pines rising straight to the sky. This place is another favorite attraction of many young people.

Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam

Outside of recognizable places like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Quang Ninh is the most famous province in Vietnam. Home to the country’s number one tourist destination Ha Long Bay, the province is flooded by international tourists every year. Eager to explore the bay’s famous karsts, caves, and beaches, visitors have fallen in love with Quang Ninh’s amazing landscapes.

While the coast around Ha Long City is arguably the most famous part of the province, tourists shouldn’t overlook Quang Ninh’s inland landscapes. Featuring verdant mountains and dense forests, the province’s inland areas are also stunning destinations.

How to Get to Quang Ninh Province

Quang Ninh Province covers about 6,178 sq km (2,385 sq mi) of land, coastline, and offshore islands in Northeastern Vietnam. Bordered by 4 Vietnamese provinces and an international border with China, tourists to the area often either cross the border or visit from Hanoi. Hanoi , Vietnam’s capital, is 154 km (95 mi) to the west of the provincial capital, Ha Long City.

As the most popular destination in Vietnam, Quang Ninh Province is well-connected to the rest of the country. Travelers from Hanoi will have the easiest journey as transportation options include seaplanes, private cars, buses, and trains. Moreover, Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, and Vietjet Air offer domestic flights from HCMC to Ha Long City daily.

Sometimes called a “Cradle of Mankind” , the history of the Quang Ninh Province goes back thousands of years to the days of prehistoric humans. Archeological relics, like jewelry money, and bones as well as remains found in the province, have been dated back to between 3000 and 1500 BC.

During Vietnam’s feudal period, Quang Ninh Province changed its name several times. As various dynasties took power, the province was first called Luc Châu under the Ngo Dynasty. At the time of the Nguyen Dynasty, the country’s last ruling dynastical empire, the province was known as Quang Yên. It wasn’t until the French colonial period that a new name was derived.

In 1899, the French invaded Tonkin , creating Ha Ninh Province from Quang Yen. Rich in minerals, the area became known for its mining and coal production. The 1945 August Revolution returned the province to Vietnam’s control and under the Hai Ninh Government Democratic Republic of Vietnam, Quang Ninh Province was established, deriving its name from Quang Yen and Hai Ninh.

Today, many of Quang Ninh’s historical sites have been preserved and are open to visitors such as Bach Dang River, Van Don District and Port, Tomb of the Tran Dynasty, and the Yen Tu Mountain. While history from prehistoric times has mostly been preserved in museums, tourists will be able to see colonial history on the streets of the provincial cities and towns.

Capital City

A first-class city, Ha Long is the capital of the Quang Ninh Province. Ha Long City sits on the coast, and it is frequently used as the jumping-off point for tourists who are traveling to explore the bay. The city has been divided into two parts – Eastern and Western Ha Long, however, Eastern Ha Long isn’t touristy as it acts as host to most of the city’s industrial and administrative buildings.

The touristy part of Ha Long is the western half of the city, however, Eastern and Western Ha Long are connected by a bridge, so it is easy to travel between the two. Aside from its industrial productions, tourism in Ha Long City is thriving. As the place where most visitors stay the night before adventuring into the bay, Ha Long City has a flourishing tourist sector.

While Ha Long Bay is the main attraction, visitors should also consider visiting the Ha Long Cable Car at Sunworld , Dragon Park, Typhoon Water Park, or Beach No 1. All these attractions are in the city, and they offer excellent views of the urban and natural landscapes.

Furthermore, there are various highly-rated beach resorts , luxury boat cruises , 5-star hotels , and hostels in Ha Long City for every type of traveler. Famous Places in Quang Ninh Province

For international tourists, the spotlight shines on smaller urban areas like Cam Pha, Mong Cai , and Uong Bi. Attractions in these destinations range from natural landscapes to historic sites and cultural communities.

Located just one hour north of Ha Long City and driven by agriculture, forestry, fishing, and coal industries, Cam Pha is a lesser-known destination in Quang Ninh. Home to the Bai Tu Long Bay, Câm Pha is becoming more popular with tourists each year. Top attractions include Vang Island, Cua Ong Temple, Reu Island, and Vang Duc Historical Site.

One of Vietnam’s wealthiest cities, Mong Cai is in the northern part of the Quang Ninh near the international border with China. Smaller than Ha Long, Mong Cai pulls its wealth from international trading with China. Tourists can stay at one of the quality guest houses or five-star hotels while exploring Trà Cô Beach, Night Market, and Sa Vi Cape.

Slightly inland from the coast, Uong Bi is a stunning city famous for its Buddhist heritage. High in the mountains, Uong Bi’s top attractions are the Bach Dang River, Yen Tu Relic, Yen Tu Mountain, and Ba Vang Pagoda. There aren’t a ton of overnight options in the city, though there is a 5-star near Ba Vang Pagoda as well as boutique hotels and hostels.

Ha Long Bay

The star of the Quang Ninh Province, Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has become Vietnam’s number one tourist attraction. Located just offshore from Ha Long City, the bay is filled with hundreds of limestone karsts. Day and overnight cruises are the way to see the bay and its islands. Activities in the bay include kayaking, hiking, snorkeling, and caving.

Popular destinations in the park include Cat Ba Island, Bon Hon Island, and the Hang Sung Sot Cave .

• Cat Ba National Park

Within Ha Long Bay, Cat Ba Island is a famous destination known for its small-town and national park. Technically a part of Hai Phong , most people will visit the island or national park on their tour of Ha Long Bay. Cat Ba National Park covers much of Cat Ba Island and it protects delicate marine habitats like the in-shore tide pools.

On the island, tourists can explore the small town or head off into the rainforest to observe the park’s unique plants and animals. Tourists are welcome to navigate the park solo or with a local guide. Trung Trang Cave, Frod Lake, and Ngu Lam Mountain are all popular destinations in Cat Ba National Park.

Bai Tu Long National Park

To the north of Ha Long Bay is the smaller, but just as stunning Bai Tu Long Bay. Less touristy than Ha Long Bay, Bai Tu Long gives visitors the chance to see the same breathtaking scenery that is found in Ha Long, but without the massive crowds. Within the bay, the Bai Tu Long National Park is another conservation area that boasts both terrestrial and marine habitats.

With clearer water than Ha Long Bay, Bai Tu Long National Park is a great place for boaters and swimmers to visit. Visitors will have the chance to explore the beaches, cruise the bay, or head underground to see the area’s impressive caves.

• Tuan Chau Island

In the southern part of Ha Long Bay, Tuan Chau Island has become a booming tourist destination. Mixing ancient and modern, the island’s history can be traced back to nearly 5,000 years ago. Today, the island boasts a variety of tourist activities including various cruises that set sail from Tuan Chau, artificial beaches, and gentle hills that gives excellent views of the bay.

Once a vacation spot for Vietnam’s former president, Ho Chi Minh, the island is now dotted with resorts and hotels that provide getaways to Vietnamese families and international tourists.

Ba Vang Pagoda

In the mountains of the Quang Ninh Province, Ba Vang Pagoda is a massive complex devoted to Buddha. A spiritual place, the temple is visited by both worshippers and tourists. The immense size and beautiful architecture make it a popular destination. The quietest time to visit is during the week as festival days and weekends can be crowded.

Yen Tu Mountain

Quang Ninh’s most famous mountain is Yen Tu. Located 50 km (32 mi) from Ha Long City, the mountain has been a spiritual center for Buddhist teachings since the 13th century. Visitors can either summit the mountain on foot, which takes up to 4 hours, or they can take the various cable cars to the top. At the summit, there is a small pagoda and scenic panoramic views.

Special Events

Of the various festivals that are unique to the Quang Ninh Province, the two most famous are the Yen Tu and Cua Ong Temple Festivals. Open to visitors, both attractions celebrate the preservation of the local Vietnamese culture and spirituality.

The Yên Tu Festival is held at the pagodas on Yên Tu Mountain, with celebrations beginning on the 10th day of the first lunar month and until the end of the third lunar month. Yên Tu celebrates King Tran Nhan Tong, who created Truc Lam Zen Buddhism. During the festival, visitors can partake in ceremonies at the pagodas.

In Câm Pha, the Cua Ông Temple Festival begins in the early days of the 2nd lunar month. The festival allows worshipers time to ask for happiness and peace in the New Year.

A dancing dragon performance kicks off the festival and opening celebrations include an incense ceremony and singing. Throughout the festival, morale is high as people play games, dance, and sing. Smaller in scale, the festival is expanded every year in hopes of bringing in more tourists.

There are two seasons in the Quang Ninh Province – wet and dry. As a province that features a lot of water, the wet season , which is at its peak during the summer months, is the least popular time for tourists as the fog and rain often block out the amazing views. Instead, the peak tourist time in the Quang Ninh Province falls at the end of the year, during the dry season .

October through January are the most popular months to visit Quang Ninh because there is less rain. However, the northern location of the province means that tourists who are visiting during the winter months will need to pack some warm layers as the temperatures can dramatically drop.

Drawing in most of Vietnam’s tourists, Quang Ninh is certainly the country’s top “must-see” and “can’t miss” provincial destination. With mountains, caves, islands, and coastal destinations, adventurous tourists won’t run out of activities while visiting.

Quang Ninh is a mountainous and coastal province, with more than 80% of its area being made up of mountains and hills. The sea and island zone of Quang Ninh has a unique terrain. There are more than 2,000 islands, making up two thirds of the Vietnam's islands. They extend along the coast for more than 250km and divide into numerous layers. The largest islands are Cai Bau and Ban Sen, while the smallest are just like rocks in a garden. The sea bottom terrain of Quang Ninh isn't smooth, and 20m-average depth. There are the remnants of ancient streams and underwater rocky banks. The streams from the mainland connect to deep drains along the sea-floor; creating a series of waterways, canals and harbors along the coast.

Quang Ninh's climate is symbolic of the climate in the North Vietnam; featuring all four seasons. In summer, it's hot, humid and rainy, while monsoons flourish. In winter, it's cold, dry, and sometime rainy.

The average heat radiating during a year is 115.4 Kcal/sq. cm. The average temperature is over 21ºC, while the average humidity is 84%. Annual rainfall totals between 1,700 and 2,400mm, and there can be between 90 to 170 rainy days in a year. Am Ngoa Van

After a period of ascetic practice at Yen Tu, Thuong Hoang Tran Nhan Tong went down the mountain, traveled around the village, taught people to break down sexual immorality, and practiced ten virtuous practices, giving medicine to the poor. Ho Thien Pagoda

Ho Thien Pagoda, whose name is Tru Phong Tu, is located on Tru Phong mountain, now belongs to Phu Ninh village, Binh Khe commune. The pagoda was built by Phap Loa – the second ancestor of the Truc Lam Zen sect to build in 1327. The name Ho Thien pagoda means the pagoda was built in the place of the Buddha, the realms of the world.

Yen Tu Pagoda

Yen Tu sacred temple is located in Thuong Yen Cong commune, Uong Bi city, Quang Ninh province. As a natural landscape, Mount Yen Tu also preserves many historical relics with the name “land of the ancestors of Vietnamese Buddhism”.

Standing at an altitude of 1068m on the top of Yen Tu mountain, visitors can see the vast Northeast with small islands looming in Halong Bay like a picture, further away is the Bach Dang River. Yen Tu Festival is held every year, starting on January 10 and ending in March (lunar calendar) every year. You can go to Yen Tu mountain in two ways:

• Follow the modern cable car over a distance of 1.2 km to a height of 450m near Hoa Yen pagoda. In this way, you can see the panoramic view of the Yen Tu mountain forest from above with conifer trees, hundreds of years old mixed in the green forests and breathe the fresh air.
• Along the 6-kilometer-long walkway, which has been reinforced by thousands of folded stone steps, weaving along the trail over the immense trees, under the canopy of bamboo forests, pine forests.

Ba Vang Temple

Located in the middle of Thanh Dang Mountain, the pagoda is also called Bao Quang Tu, a folk name often called Ba Vang. The pagoda is located at an altitude of 340m on a very beautiful location in the west of Uong Bi city, in front of the winding Bach Dang Giang, far away is the port city of Hai Phong, eye-catching is Do Son sea with many waves of waves. On the left are the mountains of Thanh Long, which are all the same, and on the right are the majestic Bach Ho mountains.

Loi Am Pagoda

Cai Bau Pagoda

The pagoda is located in village 1, Ha Long commune, Van Don District. The pagoda was built in 2007 on the foundation of Phuc Linh Pagoda – the pagoda dating back to the Tran dynasty over 700 years ago – with a total area of ​​20 ha. Cai Bau Pagoda leaned back on the mountain, facing Bai Tu Long Bay in four seasons. Cao Siam – a mountain 1,429 meters high above sea level, is one of the two highest peaks in Quang Ninh. To conquer this wonderful mountain, you have to go through a long journey of about 15km (both going and coming) with strange levels of emotions when admiring the vast pine forests.

According to ancient documents, the altitude of Cao Xiem mountain is 1,330 meters above sea level. Today, using modern map measurement technology, Cao Siam has been identified as 1,429 meters high. With this height, the summit of Cao Siam is considered the “roof” of Quang Ninh.

Cai Chien Island

In Cai Chien Commune, Hai Ha District, there are 3 villages Dau Rong, Van Ca, and Cai Chien; with over 10 islands, large and small. Sa Vi Cape, also known as Got Cape is the cape in the northeastern tip of Vietnam at 21 ° 29’33 ”north, 108 ° 4’5 ″ east in Tra Co Ward, Mong Cai city, Quang Ninh province. Day 1: Hanoi – Binh Lieu

Awakening tourism potential

Present in Ha Long City in early October, Nguyen Quoc Thang from Cau Giay District, Hanoi, said that his family often drives to Ha Long on weekends, since the opening of the Hanoi-Quang Ninh expressway. He said that going to Ha Long took a lot of time in the past and there was nothing special about getting there except visiting the bay, and he mainly went to the city in the summer to swim. Nowadays, it is much different, as the travel time is shortened and most importantly, there is no boring time in Ha Long, no matter what season of the year.

Thang smiled and said: “Coming here, the needs of the whole family are met. The children love the cable car and play in the amusement park, forgetting about time. In the evening, the whole family enjoys the sea breeze together. The food is delicious and the prices are reasonable. Tomorrow morning, we can go to Mong Cai border gate and still be able to return to Hanoi on the same day. In general, there are a lot of activities in the province that you can experience, even if you go there several times.”

Before 2013, when travelling to Quang Ninh, people often enjoyed simple tourist activities, such as visiting Ha Long Bay, watching the dolphin show in Tuan Chau and swimming. For a long time, Quang Ninh was only bustling in the summer, while it was desolate with only a few visitors to Ha Long Bay in the remaining time of the year.

The “transformation” of Quang Ninh tourism was attributed to the strategic decisions of Resolution No. 07-NQ/TU, on Quang Ninh tourism development in the 2013-2020 period, with a vision to 2030. Thanks to this Resolution, Quang Ninh’s tourism potential has truly been awakened by methodically exploiting the available values of nature, culture, and infrastructure.

In just a short time, a system of high-class accommodation facilities and themed entertainment areas was established to help tourists have more options when vacationing in Quang Ninh. These include the high-end beach hotel of Vinpearl Ha Long on the Reu Island in Bai Chay Ward, Ha Long City; the Quang Hanh luxury hot mineral resort of SunGroup in Quang Hanh Ward, Cam Pha City; the Ha Long Ocean Park in Bai Chay Ward; and the Vinhomes Ben Doan luxury service complex in Ha Long City.

In addition, a series of cultural institutions were formed, creating an imprint of Quang Ninh tourism, such as the Planning Palace, Provincial Museum - Library, October 30 Square, Ha Long Park (Ha Long City), Sa Vi Border information centre, and Tra Co - Binh Ngoc tourism site (Mong Cai City).

At the end of September, Nguyen Minh Hai from Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City joined a reunion with his friends after 30 years, held at the landmark at Sa Vi Cape. Thang, a tourist from Hanoi, said that coming to Ha Long is not just fun and relaxation. In the past ten years, Quang Ninh has become a destination for high-end resort tourism, with more than 2,200 tourist accommodation establishments being operated, providing about 43,000 rooms. Many of these meet 4.5-star standards and are equipped with cruise ships, restaurants, entertainment areas, golf courses, unique, beautiful architectural and cultural institutions, OCOP products and superb cuisine.

Nguyen Huyen Anh, Standing Deputy Director of Quang Ninh Provincial Department of Tourism, said that Quang Ninh is currently the locality with the largest number of highway kilometres in the country, which have connected Mong Cai International Border Gate - Van Don - Ha Long - Hanoi, and helped to shorten travel time from Hanoi to Ha Long to only 1.5 hours, and from Hanoi to Mong Cai to only 3 hours. Besides, the provincial authorities have paid great attention to developing provincial-level roads, especially from the province’s centre to the communes.

“Road transport is a factor that helps to develop community-based tourism in border and mountainous areas, especially in the living areas of ethnic minorities, like Binh Lieu District,” Huyen Anh explained.

Regarding air transport, Quang Ninh is home to Van Don International Airport. It takes passengers only 1 hour to travel from Van Don to Mong Cai international border gate and 45 minutes from Van Don to Ha Long.

Regarding sea transport, Quang Ninh has a system of specialised international passenger ports, such as Ha Long, Tuan Chau, and Ao Tien International Ports, which can take tourists to Ha Long Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay, Co To and Van Don. The ports are also capable of welcoming international passengers from large cruise ships.

Quang Ninh is the only locality in Vietnam sharing land and sea borders with China, and the province is a trade gateway with ASEAN countries and the world. Thanks to its favourable geographical location, along with its synchronous transportation system between road, air and sea, Quang Ninh has prosperous conditions to develop tourism into a key economic sector.

Along with well-planned infrastructure, Quang Ninh Province boasts rich natural and cultural resources for sustainable development.

Deputy Director of the Quang Ninh Tourism Department Nguyen Huyen Anh said that Quang Ninh is proud to have the world heritage site of Ha Long, which has twice been recognised by UNESCO for its outstanding aesthetic, geological and geomorphological values. Next to Ha Long Bay are Bai Tu Long Bay, Van Don and Co To, with many scattered rock and earth islands where there are many breathtaking natural beaches.

Anh said perhaps there is no other places with more cultural and historical sites than Quang Ninh Province. According to statistics, Quang Ninh has more than 600 cultural and historical sites steeped in the culture of the northeastern coastal area and existing within the cultural space of the Red River Delta. Many of the sites are associated with the Tran Dynasty, the uniquely Vietnamese Truc Lam Yen Tu Zen school and Emperor Tran Nhan Tong — a great politician and man of culture. In addition, Quang Ninh is the converging point of culture of 22 ethnic groups. All these factors create unique tourism resources that few localities in Vietnam possess.

According to the Quang Ninh Tourism Department, in 2019 the province welcomed 14 million visitors, including nearly six million foreign visitors, and generated tourism revenue of 3,568 billion VND (144.5 million USD), accounting for 10.7% of the province’s total domestic revenue.

Even during two difficult years caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Quang Ninh’s tourism industry has experienced periods of outstanding growth. For example, on peak days in July 2020, the province welcomed 100,000 visitors. The number of visitors to Quang Ninh increased even at the end of the year, the low season. After tourism was fully reopened, Quang Ninh immediately regained its spectacular growth momentum.

By the end of the first 9 months of 2023, Quang Ninh welcomed nearly 13 million visitors, a year-on-year increase of 40%. Specifically, international visitors reached over 1 million, an increase of nearly 8 times over the same period of 2022. Total tourism revenue reached nearly 26,500 billion VND, up 35% over the same period of last year.

Quang Ninh is an attractive destination for international tourists from China, the Republic of Korea, Japan, America, France, England, Germany, Taiwan (China), India, and Malaysia.

In addition, Quang Ninh’s tourism has been also continuously named in the categories of the World Travel Award, which is considered the Oscar of the world tourism industry. Along with Ha Long Bay recognised as “Asia's leading attractive destination in 2021”, Van Don Airport has been honoured in many categories of the World Travel Awards for five consecutive years (from 2019-2023). Meanwhile, Ha Long International Cruise Port was awarded the title “Asia's Leading International Cruise Port in 2021” and Premier Village Ha Long Bay Resort was honoured as “Asia's Leading Family Resort” for the second time in a row (in 2022 and 2023).

“QUANG NINH TOURISM DOES NOT HAVE LOW SEASON”

Thanks to efforts to develop Quang Ninh into a four-season destination, Quang Ninh has surpassed the heritage destination brand to position itself as a favourite four-season destination.

On August 8, 2023, the Provincial People's Committee issued Decision No. 2256/QD-UBND, approving the Project to restore and sustainably develop Quang Ninh tourism industry to 2025, with orientation to 2030. The project identified breakthrough solutions quickly recover and promote tourism development, towards developing Quang Ninh into a tourism centre connected to the region and internationally, the nation's leading tourist key area, and a high-end entertainment resort centre. Quang Ninh set a target of completely recovering its tourism industry and welcoming at least 16 million visitors by 2024, including at least 3 million international tourists.

Deputy Director in charge of Quang Ninh Provincial Department of Tourism Nguyen Huyen Anh said that thanks to the seaport system that can welcome large tonnage passenger ships, Quang Ninh can still welcome international cruise ships in the last months of the year. According to forecasts of travel businesses, more than 20 cruise ships with about 200,000 international visitors are expected to visit Quang Ninh in the last three months of the year.

“Up to this point, I think that Quang Ninh tourism does not have a low season”, noted Huyen Anh.

According to the Deputy Director in charge of Quang Ninh Department of Tourism, in the summer months, Quang Ninh attracted a large number of domestic tourists as a result of the habit of traveling to the beach in the summer. Meanwhile, many foreign tourists have chosen Quang Ninh as a vacation destination for the period from November to April next year.

According to forecasts of travel businesses, in the last three months of the year, there will be more than 20 cruise ships with about 200,000 international visitors.

In addition, Huyen Anh said to compensate for the low number of tourists at the time of season change in September and October, Quang Ninh has been launching many new attractive tourism products for many years, such as: Winter Carnival; marathon awards — including the Ha Long Bay Heritage Marathon, and VN Express Marathon; Co To - Green Island Imprint; music tourism.

Yen Tu scenic relic area with activities and rituals taking place throughout the year, such as: Buddha's birthday ceremony, Yen Tu - Back to the Land of Buddhism in the Autumn festival, and the ceremony to commemorate the attainment of Nirvana by Emperor-Monk Tran Nhan Tong. In addition, spiritual destinations throughout the province such as Cua Ong Temple, Ba Vang Pagoda, and Ngoa Van Pagoda are all ready to welcome visitors.

After COVID-19, the medical tourism, also known as the "healing tourism", is booming. Quang Ninh has caught up with this world trend and become a great destination for the "healing tourism", as it has great potential to become the capital of this new type of tourism with its beautiful and peaceful nature and resorts with qualified facilities, such as the Onsen Quang Hanh hot mineral resort and Legacy Yen Tu Resort.

When talking about the medical tourism, it is impossible not to mention Co To District. With a maritime climate and the best air index in the Northern, Co To has long been a favourite destination for sports lovers when choosing to trek across the island/through the forest, jogging, cycling, or exercising yoga.

Not only that, Quang Ninh is also becoming an attractive destination for golf tourism and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and events) tourism, thanks to a synchronous connection infrastructure system, meeting 4-star and 5-star standards to serve high-end customers.

Nguyen Huu Thuy, Chairman of Quang Ninh Golf Association, Vice Chairman of Vietnam Golf Association, said that Quang Ninh Golf Association has nearly 200 golfers, regularly organises tournaments, and interacts with golfers inside and outside. These are favourable conditions to attract and promote golf tourism.

Regarding MICE tourism, Chairman of the Vietnam Tourism Association Vu The Binh, said that Quang Ninh has very good conditions to become a MICE centre of Vietnamese tourism. Quang Ninh features the world heritage site of Ha Long Bay; a large capacity accommodation system that meets the requirements of MICE — a type of tourism combined with seminars and conferences; and a convenient traffic connection system. In addition, Quang Ninh currently has a lot of experience with this type of tourism after organising the SEA Games and many large domestic and international conferences.

Resolution No.2256/QD-UBND has proposed four main product lines of Quang Ninh tourism: Sea and island tourism, Cultural and spiritual tourism, Community-based Ecotourism, and Border Tourism.

Nguyen Huyen Anh, Deputy Director in charge of the Quang Ninh Provincial Department of Tourism, commented: “In my opinion, these 4 product lines are not enough. Quang Ninh has the ability to develop many other tourism products such as MICE tourism, sports tourism; marathon; Golf tourism.”

In particular, in the last months of the year, tourism in the Mong Cai border region promises to attract many tourists with a series of attractive activities and programmes. Notably, from October 30, people will be able to drive their cars through Mong Cai International Border Gate to Dong Hung City and go deeper to Nanning City of China.

In contrast, Chinese tourists will also be able to drive through the border gate to Mong Cai and go as far as Ha Long City (Quang Ninh). In particular, self-driving activities, culinary and cultural experiences, and high-class tourism are the highlights that are expected to create excitement for the city's tourism industry.

In parallel with developing new tourism products suitable for all times of the year, Quang Ninh tourism is also closely linked with provinces in the Red River Delta region and with major tourism centres, especially Hanoi, to develop tourism. Along with that, Quang Ninh tourism continues to expand its market, going beyond the boundaries of traditional markets such as Japan, the Republic Korea, China, and Europe to seek new markets such as India and the Middle East.

Ms. Nguyen Huyen Anh said: "We are looking to exploit new customer markets such as Indian tourists, customers using Halal products, and Muslim tourists. This is a potential number of tourists because they travel in all four seasons. However, this number of visitors to Quang Ninh did not reach as expected. We will tailor our services to suit their culture.”

Quang Ninh Museum: The Iconic Construction of The Coal Land

Quang Ninh Province, the landscape in the northeast of Vietnam, has been famous for the world heritage Halong Bay and the religious complex of Yen Tu Pagoda. Not only that, Quang Ninh also owns a number of iconic buildings, one of which is the Quang Ninh Museum. Taking inspiration from coal, the famous mineral of this province, Quang Ninh Museum preserves the historical and cultural values and educates the future generation about the pride of Quang Ninh people.1

I. Overview about Quang Ninh Museum

Having unique architecture, charming space and plenty of valuable artifacts, Quang Ninh Museum is located in the complex of cultural works.

Quang Ninh Museum is designed by Spanish architect, Salvador Perez Arroyo, started from 2012 and completed in October 2013. It includes 3 blocks of museum, library and convention connected together by an overhead bridge system. As the typical mineral of Quang Ninh Province is coal, the building is also inspired and built as a symbol on the most beautiful coastal road in Ha Long City. Moreover, the building is assembled with 14,000m² of glass that is resistant to temperature changes. Because of specific architecture, the building looks like a giant mirror reflecting the image of Ha Long Bay.

In the ground floor of the museum block, visitors will have the opportunity to admire a whale skeleton and sailboat models. Visitors will feel like walking in a miniature space of HaLong Bay on the first floor with tubular displaying columns made of modern materials such as steel frame, tempered glass and covering fabric with images of Ha Long Bay along with the light projection technology. The second floor will lead visitors back through periods of history of Quang Ninh Province.

Connected with famous attractions in Quang Ninh Province such as Hong Gai Church, Bai Tho Mountain, Ha Long Marine Plaza Tran Quoc Nghien Temple, Long Tien Pagoda, Vincom Ha Long Trade Center. Quang Ninh Museum is considered a specific tourism product containing the values of daily lives of the locals.

Currently, Quang Ninh Museum is open from 09 to 11:30 AM and 02 to 06 PM (Tuesday to Saturday). The building is contributing to promote the image of Quang Ninh tourism to domestic and international tourists.

II. Highlights of Quang Ninh Museum

Quang Ninh Museum is located at the cultural and tourism center in the east of Halong City. One side of this construction is the most beautiful coast road in Viet Nam, and the other side is the majestic Halong Bay. Not only that, Quang Ninh Museum is surrounded by other well-known constructions such as 30/10 Square and Halong Dolphin Apartment, which are all the venues of attractive events in Quang Ninh Province. Thanks to the favorable position, Quang Ninh Museum has been a tourist attraction in Halong City since its inauguration.

When thinking of a museum in Vietnam, many people might imagine the classic architecture with arched windows, complicated details and meticulous decoration. However, Quang Ninh Museum is one of the exceptions. This museum is built in a minimalist architecture style, which consists of blocks placed side by side. Taking inspiration from coals, the mineral associated with the name Quang Ninh, this museum is completely covered by black glass panels that both create a modern feeling and exude the spirit of the whole construction.

Overall from the outside, Quang Ninh Museum is like a giant mirror reflecting the gorgeous images of Halong sea and sky. The exterior of this construction has an exhibition area, which displays unique art sculptures reminding visitors about the land of coal. Especially, the 28-ton monolithic block here is the largest one in Vietnam, which can attract tourists with its exclusive appearance at first sight.

2. Structure

Including three separated floors, Quang Ninh Museum provides tourists an overview about the land and people in Quang Ninh from past to present. Contrasting to the mysterious black color of the exterior, the interior of Quang Ninh Museum is a world of brightful light, which adorns the highlights of artifacts there. Each floor of the museum has its own theme, and the displaying objects here will tell you the exciting stories you have never heard about this landscape.

The first floor of Quang Ninh Museum is the exhibition of the sea and nature. This area is featured by four large tubular displaying columns covered with cloth, which bear the image of the magnificent Halong Bay. With the light effects, the atmosphere of the first floor is much more appealing to tourists. A sailboat model and a large whale skeleton in this exhibition area will impress tourists immediately.

The second floor of Quang Ninh Museum displays a variety of artifacts, which are typical of the history and culture of Quang Ninh Province. With an arrangement stimulating a boat, the second floor is the home of archeological objects from prehistoric to modern periods, which have witnessed many ups and downs in the history of Quang Ninh. In addition, the second ground of Quang Ninh Museum also represents the victories of the Quang Ninh army and people during the resistant wars, contributing to the victory of Vietnam.

Also on the second floor, there is a cultural and spiritual space attached with Yen Tu Pagoda and Truc Lam Zen Sect. This space displays a miniature model of Dong Pagoda and plenty of ancient artifacts. Next to a large screen showing the impressive images of Yen Tu, there is a place for heritage artifacts dating from the Tran Dynasty in the 13 th century.

The third floor is also the last part of Quang Ninh Museum that shows the whole coal mining industry of Quang Ninh Province in detail. There are models of coal mines, carts and miners that will give visitors an authentic view about this hard but glorious work. On the walls hang historical pictures of Uncle Ho with people in Quang Ninh, which are valuable historical documents educating many generations of Quang Ninh residents.

From the city center, you follow Highway 18, turn right to Tran Hung Dao Street then turn left to Tran Quoc Nghien Street. It only takes you about 10 minutes to travel by motorbike or by car to reach Quang Ninh Museum.

From Hanoi, to get to Halong City, you can go by private car or coach. Thanks to the expressway, you will only need about 2 hour to complete the more-than-150-kilometer way from Hanoi to Halong. On the way to Quang Ninh Museum, you will catch the sight of the picturesque scenery of Halong sea as well as pass by some famous destinations in this city.

There are some tips for you to visit Quang Ninh Museum:

• Quang Ninh Museum is open for visitors every day, except for the last Monday of the month.
• You can hire a tour guide who will accompany you during the whole exploration in Quang Ninh Museum. The tour guide who has background knowledge about the history and culture of Halong will provide you with interesting information.
• If you want to take photos and videos inside Quang Ninh Museum, you need to pay additional charges from 100,000 VND to 500,000 VND, depending on your visit duration and type of camera.

• You are not allowed to smoke inside the museum; do not speak too loudly or play in the interior of Quang Ninh Museum.

Quang Ninh establishes Tourism Department - Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism

The People's Committee of Quang Ninh Province on May 9 announced the establishment of the provincial Department of Tourism due to the rapid growth of the local tourism sector.

The Department of Tourism was separated from the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism without increasing the number of regular officials in the province.

Speaking at the announcement ceremony, Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Nguyen Duc Long said that the establishment of the Tourism Department stems from the fact that Quang Ninh has been regarded as an attractive destination for both domestic and international tourists for years, with a strong increase in the number of visitors and tourism revenue each year.

He noted that the establishment of the Tourism Department aimed to build Quang Ninh into an international tourism centre and a leading tourism centre with diversified tourism products and services, imbued with the cultural identity of local ethnic minority groups.

Quang Ninh has enormous potential for developing tourism with highlights including Ha Long Bay, recognised as a World Natural Heritage by UNESCO; more than 500 national and provincial relic sites; and many tourist urban areas such as Ha Long, Van Dong, and Mong Cai among others.

The province's tourism sector has seen strong development over the past ten years with the number of visitors increasing from 3.1 million in 2006 to 7.5 million in 2014. The province expects to welcome around 10.5 million visitors in 2016.

In 2015, the tourism sector contributed VND1.2 trillion (US$54 million) to the State budget, accounting for nearly 6% of the province’s total revenue.

Endowed with stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, Halong Bay is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Vietnam, attracting millions of visitors each year. In recent years, the number of tourists visiting Halong Bay has increased dramatically, making it one of the most visited attractions in the country. In this article, we will take a closer look at some of the most updated and interesting tourism statistics for Halong Bay, exploring the trends and patterns that have emerged in recent years.

First and foremost, a notable thing is that Halong Bay has seen a substantial increase in the number of visitors over the past decade. In 2010, the bay welcomed approximately 1.6 million visitors, while in 2023 , that number had rocketed to over 6.8 million . This represents a more than three-fold increase in the number of tourists visiting Halong Bay, making it one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in Vietnam.

Regarding the year 2022, Quang Ninh province, in general, and Halong bay, in particular, successfully recovered tourism after the Covid-19 pandemic. Statistically, the province received 5.5 million visitors in late June which was more than half the target set for this year. The total number of visitors to Halong bay in 2022 was approximately 11.6 million, reaching 122% of the set target. Among those, the destination welcomed 300.000 international visitors and over 11.2 million domestic tourist arrivals.

To achieve this result, in 2022 Quang Ninh has taken the lead in opening tourism strongly, timely, and safely. Many tourism promotion activities have been innovated in terms of methods and organized on an international scale, bringing positive results. Some of these events include the successful organization of 7 sports competitions in the 31st SEA Games; the hosting of the 9th National Sports Congress; and the organization of the 17th East Asia Tourism Forum (EATOF) combined with the 20th-anniversary celebration of the establishment of EATOF.

Quang Ninh province and Halong Bay are expected to experience a surge in tourism in 2023. During the 5-day Tet holiday, the province welcomed around 660,000 visitors . Particularly, Ha Long Bay received around 20,000 visitors, including 10,550 international visitors.

The goal of Quang Ninh province is to attract 14 million tourist arrivals in 2023 and earn 1.2 billion USD. This year, the province also to organize the implementation of several projects, a project on tourism recovery to 2025, with a vision to 2030; a sustainable community tourism development work, and a master plan on marine tourism development on Halong bay, Bay Tu Long bay , Van Don and Co To island .

This rapid surge can be attributed to the increasing popularity of Vietnam as a whole as a tourist destination. In recent years, the country has witnessed substantial growth in the number of international visitors, with many choosing to explore the natural beauty and rich cultural heritage of Halong Bay. In addition, the increasing availability of affordable air travel has made it easier for tourists to reach the region, further fueling its popularity.

Apart from the aforementioned reasons, the quality of local tourism infrastructure has also facilitated the fast-paced growth of Halong bay tourism. QUANG NINH (Vietnam News/ANN): Quang Ninh aims to become an international tourism hub and a world leading destination by 2050 through establishing the brand of Ha Long Bay - Bai Tu Long Bay as a landscape paradise and harmonising the development of economic-social-environmental ecosystems, along with raising the quality of life of local residents to meet international standards.

Those are among important targets of the province's tourism development scheme to 2030 with a vision to 2050, which is being finalised by the provincial People's Committee.

Under the project, from now until 2030, Quang Ninh will continue to strengthen its role as a national tourism locomotive with tourism turned into a spearhead economic sector in connection with sustainable development of marine economy towards green growth. The province will strive to attract tourists all year round and become a destination not to be missed in Vietnam.

The province will focus on diversifying tourism products, expanding tourist market, promoting cooperation in tourism development, improving local capacity in state management and implementation of tourism development policies. Priority will be given to the development of high-quality tourism human resources and digital transformation in the field.

Quang Ninh will consistently follow the policy of sustainable and inclusive tourism development on the foundation of green growth.

The province aims to develop tourism in a professional, quality and sustainable manner, and link tourism development with preserving and promoting national cultural values and identities. The province also envisions unique tourism products with high added-value in different types of tourism and the formation of national tourism sites.

This year, Quang Ninh expects to welcome 17 million visitors, including three million foreigners. To this end, it is rolling out such solutions as attracting tourists from Northeast Asia and China, Europe, the US, and developing new markets such as India, Middle East, Russia and Australia through promotion activities.

The province will host 186 cultural and sporting events in 2024 to stimulate tourism, among them are many traditional events that have become trademarks of Quang Ninh.

These events includes those such as Hạ Long Summer Tourism Week 2024, Bach Dang Traditional Festival, Quang Ninh Ethnic Culture Day, a culinary festival, a three-region circus gala, the OCOP summer 2024 fair, a national festival for music, the Quang Ninh Open golf tournament and the Ha Long Heritage Marathon. It also plans to offer 62 more new tourism products in 2024. - Vietnam News/ANN
