RAC offers a broad range of cover for risks related to COVID-19. Here's what you can expect:

  • Overseas medical, hospital, and emergency expenses if you contract COVID-19.
  • Cancellation fees and lost deposits if you have to cancel or cut short your trip due to a COVID-19 related event outside of your control.
  • Cancellation fees and lost deposits if you or a travelling companion are diagnosed with COVID-19 and you have to cancel or rearrange your trip
  • Relevant costs if a close relative or business partner is hospitalised or dies due to COVID-19 and you have to cancel, reschedule or return home early.
  • Relevant costs if you are permanently employed as a healthcare worker and your pre-approved leave is cancelled due to COVID-19.
  • Relevant costs if a pre-paid tour is cancelled due to your tour guide contracting COVID-19
  • Relevant costs if you're not permitted to board scheduled public transport due to you being suspected of having COVID-19

Once submitted, your claim will be assessed within 10 working days.

Alternatively, you can call RAC on 1300 209 352 or email RAC at [email protected].

RAC offers strong protection across the board, at a reasonable price point.

In regards to COVID-19, a wide range of scenarios are covered but claims are capped at $3,500 which could leave some travellers out of pocket.

Lots of adventure activities, and even scooter and motorbike riding, are covered as standard, which is good news for many adrenaline-fueled but budget-conscious travellers. However, there's no option to add a specific adventure pack so be sure to check exactly which activities are covered and any requirements attached.

Are my children covered by RAC travel insurance?

Your children and your grandchildren are covered for free if they are 25 years old or younger, are financially dependent on their parents, are not working full time, do not require a medical assessment, are travelling with you the whole time, and are listed on the certificate of insurance.

Is there an age limit for RAC travel insurance?

No, as long as you're over 18 and meet the other requirements listed in the PDS, you can get cover..

Does RAC cover cruises?

RAC does not offer specific cruise cover. If you are going on a cruise which stops at other countries, you will need to select International Cover and list each country where the cruise stops.

Amendment or Cancellation cost: If a close family member got very sick and I decided not to go on trip, would the policy cover this

Avatar

Thanks for your question.

Your cancellation will depend on your policy exclusions stated with RAC. If you were aware of any reason, before your period of insurance commenced, that may cause your trip to be cancelled, you may not be covered.

The exact definition of a relative for each travel insurance policy will vary from insurers. Moreover, there are many policies that will cover you for amendment and cancellation costs due to family emergencies.

Please make sure to read the eligibility criteria, features and details of the policy, as well as the relevant Product Disclosure Statements before making a decision and consider whether the product is right for you. If necessary, speak to the insurance brand to verify any details.

I hope this was helpful, Richard

rac travel insurance

Fact checked

Founded in 1905 as a roadside assistance service for Western Australians, RAC now offers a wide range of services and products not just for those behind the wheel. Alongside finance and auto services, the West Perth company offers insurance for homes, cars, motorcycles, and even your next holiday.

You can compare RAC's travel insurance products against those of other insurers with Savvy to help you choose the best plan for your next getaway. Additionally, you can compare coverage details such as inclusions and exclusions to other plans.

More about RAC travel insurance

What travel insurance policies does rac offer.

RAC offers a range of travel insurance policies in Australia, including:

  • International Comprehensive: RAC’s highest level of coverage provides you with unlimited medical expense coverage, including COVID-19 and 24/7 emergency assistance. You can also receive compensation if your bags are stolen, go missing or are damaged on your holiday, whether you’re travelling to the UK or taking a holiday to Singapore .
  • International Essentials: this policy covers you for the essentials such as unlimited overseas medical costs, some cancellation fees and lost deposits and damage or theft of your luggage. This policy is like their comprehensive insurance but offers lower limits.
  • Domestic Comprehensive: RAC offers this policy for people who are sticking close to home for their holiday. Coverage includes replacement of stolen or lost luggage, loss of income and the cancellation of your trip .
  • Medical-Only: if you’re looking for a bare-bones policy which only covers a trip to the hospital if you need it, RAC offers this medical-only policy .
  • Annual Multi-Trip Insurance: if you’re planning to take more than one trip over 12 months, RAC offers an annual travel insurance policy which covers you for multiple holidays up to 60 days in length. You can roll your children and grandchildren into your coverage for free, and if you’re taking more people, you can even turn it into a family or dual travel insurance policy.

Whether you’re jetting off to the UK or just taking a flight to Perth, it’s important to compare policies with Savvy so you can find the best travel insurance for your next holiday.

What optional extras are available through RAC?

RAC, like many other travel insurers, provides optional extras for both international and domestic holidays. These include:

  • Ski and winter sports cover: taking part in some snow sports on your holiday? RAC offers cover for those who want to snowboard, ski, play ice hockey, ice skate or even go snowmobiling for overseas medical costs, the hire of snow equipment and piste closure.
  • Cruise cover: if you’re taking a domestic or international cruise holiday and purchase your travel insurance through RAC, you’ll need to tack this onto your coverage to get protection for medical expenses, cabin confinement and other expenses at sea.
  • Medical conditions: RAC automatically covers a raft of pre-existing medical conditions, such as glaucoma, hernias and nocturnal cramps. However, if you have a more serious health condition such as a heart condition or asthma and you’re over 60, you may need to pay a higher premium to get it covered.

What exclusions should I be aware of when buying travel insurance through RAC?

While some travel insurance policies in Australia can offer wide-ranging coverage, the benefits aren’t limitless and there are some circumstances where your claim won’t be given the green light. With RAC, some of these include:

  • Unapproved pre-existing health issues, such as claims of mental illness and certain types of diabetes
  • Partaking in an unapproved activity or sport such as BASE jumping or hang gliding
  • Travel on a privately chartered boat or plane
  • Complications following an elective surgery
  • Travelling against the advice of your doctor
  • If you’re filing a claim due to terrorism or war
  • Travelling to a country against Australian government advice
  • Accidents caused by the consumption of drugs or alcohol

If you’ve found a policy that suits your next holiday to a tee, make sure you review the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) before you set your decision in stone.

What we think of RAC travel insurance

What we like, discount if you’re a rac member.

If you’re a RAC member, you can receive a 15% discount on your travel insurance policy . This compares to some of their competitors who offer 10% discounts on policies (or most who offer none at all).

Extensive cooling-off period

RAC gives you 21 days to change your mind and cancel your policy, which is seven days longer than most other insurers. This allows you to continue shopping around to find a deal which beats the policy you already have.

Generous legal liability

You’re covered for up to $10 million if you’re found personally liable for damage to property or the injury of another person, whereas many other insurers cap this at $5 million or lower.

What we don't like

Higher premium for cruise cover.

You’ll need to pay a higher premium if you’re taking a cruise holiday and want to go with RAC as it’s not automatically included under standard policies.

Strict pregnancy cover requirements

RAC travel insurance policies will cover pregnancy; however, you’ll only be covered for complications before your 26th week of gestation and won’t be covered for routine doctor’s visits.

Limited coverage for pets

While RAC’s comprehensive policy allows you to claim up to $650 if you need to book extra boarding for your pet because your return is delayed, this coverage isn’t available on domestic, medical-only or essentials policies.

Types of travel insurance

International.

International travel insurance can offer cover for a range of events, including medical expenses, lost luggage or items, cancellation fees and more when you're overseas and a long way from home.

If you're journeying within Australia, domestic policies are designed to offer many of the same protections as international travel insurance (with the exception of medical expenses).

Single trip

The most standard and common type of travel insurance, this policy can cover you for one trip starting and ending in Australia (and is available for both international and domestic travel).

Annual multi-trip

As the name suggests, this type of travel insurance covers multiple trips over a 12-month period. Depending on your insurer, you may be able to take an unlimited number of trips up to 90 days each.

You don't have to have a return ticket booked to take out cover while you're overseas. One-way travel insurance enables you to access cover without a set end date, such as if you're moving temporarily.

You may need to take out specialist coverage if you're setting sail on a cruise. Fortunately, cruise insurance can cover emergency evacuation, cabin confinement and more.

Just because you're older doesn't mean travel insurance isn't still important. If you qualify for cover, seniors' travel insurance can offer greater peace of mind for included events while you're travelling.

Adding winter sports or ski cover to your policy can add protection against damage to your equipment, piste closure due to bad weather and activities such as back-country skiing, heliskiing and more.

Adventure sports

Looking to enjoy some adventure sports on holiday? An adventure sports pack can grant you cover for a range of activities, such as hiking, scuba diving and motorcycle or scooter riding.

Jetsetting with the whole clan in tow? Some insurers offer family travel insurance, which enables you to include yourself, your partner and your dependent children under one policy to help you save.

If you're travelling interstate or overseas with your partner (or simply another friend or family member), you may be able to access a discount by taking out a joint or duo travel insurance policy.

Frequently asked questions about RAC travel insurance

RAC’s comprehensive policy offers you limited coverage for a range of COVID-19-related costs, including hospital and medical expenses and cancellation costs.

All claims can be submitted either by phone or electronically, online or by email with RAC. If you’re filing your claim by phone or e-mail, you’ll be sent a claim form to fill out, along with information on what supporting paperwork is required. Once you’ve submitted your claim, RAC sends you a confirmation email and the estimated turnaround time is about ten working days.

The price of travel insurance varies from person to person based on a wide range of factors, such as:

  • Your date of birth
  • Your chosen destination
  • The level of coverage you buy
  • Any optional extras you need
  • Pre-existing medical conditions you need to disclose
  • The policy excess you choose
  • The type of insurer and insurance policy you buy

Single-trip travel insurance will only cover one round trip. On the other hand, annual multi-trip insurance protects you against financial loss for as many trips as you take each year (often up to 60 travel days per trip). A one-way travel insurance coverage may cover your whole trip if you are on an ongoing journey (up to a year). An extra year of insurance coverage may be bought for many plans.

Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

READ the FINE PRINT. There are so many exemptions that making a claim is almost impossible. Lost or Stolen passports must be on your person to claim! How does that work? Luggage must be in your possession! How does that work? We were checking into our accomodation and left one bag in the locked car because we couldn't carry everything in one trip. It was obscured from view and locked but RAC refused our claim which included $5000+ of extra expenses related to the bag containing our passports. I was stranded in the UK for 3 weeks until a new passport was issued while my husband had to return to Australia on his own. Very disappointed in the whole experience

I bought RAC travel insurance when I was traveling for holidays in December 2022. My mother died and I have to come back. I provided all information as required include cause of death, date and all other documents they required. But they refused to approve the claim. Disgusting and Rude behaviour experienced with RAC travel Insurance - under written by Tokio Marine Company mania branch is in Tokyo. Main point is when we bought the RAC travel Insurance they never informed us that their underwriters company's main branch is in Tokyo and all our communication came from Tokyo. They were pretty rude and gave us so much trouble to push our limit so that we will get fed-up and leave the claim. This is a huge industry malpractice not informing the customers that we are contracting with underwriter company based in Tokyo. I never thought RAC will practice such unethical behaviour. Do not ever take RAC travel insurance or if any travel insurance under written by Tokio Marine company.

Awful experience when trying to claim from RACV Travel Insurance

RACV Travel Insurance is operated by Tokio Marine Management Australasia. When taking out the policy, the service was great. BUT my experience when trying to make a claim has been absolutely awful. Only 4 days before our departure on a long-delayed (due to the COVID-19 pandemic) trip to Europe, my husband suddenly and completely unexpectedly became severely ill, and was rushed to hospital. He was diagnosed with acute, sudden onset leukaemia. He has absolutely no medical history that indicated this would happen. Obviously we couldn't go on our trip, and we made a claim for the lost payments for a cruise on the Croatian coast, and the first couple of nights accommodation which were the only parts of the trip not cancellable at short notice. All up, we made a claim for around $6000, having paid $977 for the policy, with a $250 excess. Trying to make the claim has become a nightmare. The approach of RACV/Tokio Marine has been to continually ask for more and more medical information, over a period of more than 3 months. Each time we submit additional medical information, the response comes back that they want more information, or the same information already supplied in a different format. I have now uploaded into their online claim system (you can't email them) a total of 27 documents supporting our claim (from our GP, hospitals and medical specialists), but once again RACV/Tokio Marine has responded that more medical details are required. They have already been provided with more than 2 years of complete medical records, but have rejected them because their assessor, Manus, says (in a recorded telephone conversation) that patient consultation notes have to be sourced from a digital patient medical record system - which our family GP doesn't have - our GP still writes all his patient medical/consultation notes by hand during each consultation, and has already provided scans of 4 pages of his very detailed medical notes to RACV. Our GP has also offered several options that RACV/Tokio Marine can use to confirm all the scanned notes provided are genuine. But RACV/Tokio Marine wont accept his proposed verification solutions. In fact, the RACV/Tokio Marine assessor falsely accused me (in a recorded telephone conversation) that "you could have written them yourself" because the medical notes were handwritten by the GP. I strongly objected to being accused of fraud - there was absolutely no basis for this appalling accusation (call was recorded), but the assessor, Manus Bhatt, refused to retract the false accusation. RACV/Tokio Marine also warns on their claims website that "they are experiencing long delays" and that it can take them up to 20 working days to respond to any messages you send them about your claim. So this means that each time they ask for more information, and you upload more documents into the claim website, it can be up to 20 working days before they turn around a response. Hence our claim has taken more than 3 months of hours and hours of preparing the documents they keep asking for. All this is despite the fact that my husband's medical specialists (at Royal Melbourne Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre), as well as his GP of more than 30 years, have provided written confirmation/documentation provided to RACV/Tokio Marine that his leukaemia was completely and totally "out of the blue" with absolutely no prior medical indication or history that this could happen. Our claim was first lodged on 2 September with RACV/Tokio Marine and 27 supporting documents have been uploaded to their system over this period. But when I provided feedback that our GP does not use a computerised system for patient medical records, and can only provide handwritten notes for the last 2 years of medical consultation notes, our claim was immediately denied by Manus Bhatt. Sharing this so that others (particularly long-standing, 30+ years RACV Club Members like me) are aware that claiming on RACV Travel Insurance can be a total nightmare. They will deny a medical claim if your GP does not keep their patient medical records in their required format (which they don't specify, and seems to change with each communication) and none of this is mentioned in the PDS. Several times I asked that they supply a template of the format they require for medical records, but RACV/Tokio Marine advised the didn't have one. Our GP has also offered several options that RACV/Tokio Marine can use to confirm with him that all the scanned medical notes provided are genuine - but they have refused to accept any of our GP's proposed solutions. RACV, as a 30+ years Gold Club Member, the service provided by Tokio Marine is seriously damaging your brand and reputation as an organisation that purports to look after its members.

Took out RAC travel insurance and became ill overseas. Had a total of over $2500 in medical expenses, lost flights, accomodation and large roaming bills RE booking from hospital. Was put through to Tokio Marine RACs insurance provider and they are the worst company I have ever dealt with. Takes far too long to reply to emails, disgusting customer service and are incompetent to say the least.

- Lost my original claim - Delays in replying to my second claim - Ask for unreasonable information. After I provided proof of my purchase, IMEI number, police report, proof of address and more I was told that as I did not have a letter from the original purchaser of the handset (of which was impossible to get as I bought it second hand) I was told that they could not process my claim. - They will find any way possible to not help you with your claim. - DO NOT BOTHER to get this cover unless you have done 1 week prep to gather all of the information about your phone. REGARDLESS it is not worth the hassle as the customer service is laughable.

Cheapest travel insurance comparison

Travel Insured

How much does the cheapest travel insurance cost?

The cheapest travel insurance in our rating is $334. This is for a WorldTrips Atlas Journey Preferred travel insurance plan, based on the average of seven quotes for travelers of various ages to international destinations with a range of trip values.

Factors that determine travel insurance cost

There are several factors that determine the cost of travel insurance, including:

  • Age and number of travelers being insured.
  • Trip length.
  • Total trip cost.
  • The travel insurance plan you choose.
  • The travel insurance company.
  • Any add-ons, features or upgraded benefits you include in the travel insurance plan.
Expert tip: “In general, travelers can expect to pay anywhere from 4% to 10% of their total prepaid, non-refundable trip costs,” said Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip.

Is buying the cheapest travel insurance a good idea?

Choosing cheaper travel insurance without paying attention to what a plan covers and excludes could leave you underinsured for your trip. Comparing travel insurance plans side-by-side can help ensure you get enough coverage to protect yourself financially in an emergency for the best price.

For example, compare these two Travelex travel insurance plans:

  • Travel Basic is cheaper but it only provides up to $15,000 for emergency medical expense coverage. You’ll also have to pay extra for coverage for children.
  • Travel Select will cost you a bit more but it covers up to $50,000 in medical expenses and includes coverage for kids aged 17 and younger traveling with you. It also offers upgrades such additional medical coverage, “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage and an adventure sports rider that may be a good fit for your trip.

Reasons to consider paying more for travel insurance

Make sure you understand what you’re giving up if you buy the cheapest travel insurance. Here are a few reasons you may consider paying a little extra for better coverage.

  • Emergency medical. The best travel medical insurance offers primary coverage for emergency medical benefits. Travel insurance with primary coverage can cost more than secondary coverage but will save you from having to file a claim with your health insurance company before filing a travel insurance claim.
  • Emergency evacuation. If you’re traveling to a remote location or planning a boat excursion on your trip, look at travel insurance with a high medical evacuation insurance limit. If you are injured while traveling, transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility could cost in the tens to hundreds of thousands. It may make sense to pay more for travel insurance with robust emergency evacuation coverage.
  • Flexibility. To maximize your trip flexibility, you might consider upgrading your travel insurance to “ cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage . This will increase the cost of your travel insurance but allow you to cancel your trip for any reason — not just those listed in your policy. The catch is that you’ll need to cancel at least 48 hours before your trip and will only be reimbursed 50% or 75% of your trip expenses, depending on the plan.
  • Upgrades. Many travel insurance plans have optional extras like car rental collision and adventure sports (which may otherwise be excluded from coverage). These will cost you extra but may give you the coverage you need.

How to find the cheapest travel insurance

The best way to find the cheapest travel insurance is to determine what you’re looking for in a travel insurance policy and compare plans that meet your needs.

“Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every trip is different, and every traveler has different needs, wants and concerns. This is why comparison is key,” said Morrow.

Consider the following factors when comparing cheap travel insurance plans.

  • How often you’re traveling. A single-trip policy may be the most cost-effective if you’re only going on a single trip this year. But a multi-trip travel insurance plan may be cheaper if you’re going on multiple international trips throughout the year. Annual travel insurance policies cover you for a whole year as long as each trip doesn’t exceed a certain number of days, usually 30 to 90 days.
  • Credit card has travel insurance benefits. The best credit cards offer perks and benefits, and many offer travel insurance-specific benefits. The coverage types and benefit limits can vary, and you must put the entire trip cost on the credit card to use the coverage. If your trip costs more than the coverage limit on your card, you can supplement the rest with a cheaper travel insurance plan.
  • The coverage you need. When looking for the best travel insurance option at the most affordable price, only buy extras and upgrades you really need. A basic plan may only provide up to $500 in baggage insurance, but if you only plan to take $300 worth of clothes and accessories, you don’t need to pay more for higher coverage limits.

Is cheap travel insurance worth it?

Cheap travel insurance can be worth it, as long as you understand the plan limitations and exclusions. Taking the time to read your policy, especially the fine print, well before your trip can ensure there won’t be any surprises about what’s covered once your journey begins.

“If a traveler is looking for coverage for travel delays, cancellations, interruptions, medical and baggage — a comprehensive travel insurance policy will provide the most bang for their buck,” said Morrow. But if you’re on a tight budget and are only worried about emergency medical care and evacuation coverage while traveling abroad, stand-alone options are cheaper.

Before buying travel insurance, you should also consider what your health insurance will cover.

“Most domestic health insurance plans, including Medicare, will not cover medical bills abroad,” said Morrow. Even if you’re staying stateside, you may find value in an affordable travel insurance plan with medical coverage if you have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP).

A cheap travel insurance plan is better than none at all if you end up in a situation that would have covered some or all of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses.

Methodology

Our insurance experts reviewed 1,855 coverage details and 567 rates to determine the best travel insurance . From those top-scoring travel insurance plans, we chose the most affordable for our rating of the cheapest travel insurance.

Insurers could score up to 100 points based on the following factors:

  • Cost: 40 points. We scored the average cost of each travel insurance policy for a variety of trips and traveler profiles.
  • Medical expenses: 10 points. We scored travel medical insurance by the coverage amount available. Travel insurance policies with emergency medical expense benefits of $250,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Medical evacuation: 10 points. We scored each plan’s emergency medical evacuation coverage by coverage amount. Travel insurance policies with medical evacuation expense benefits of $500,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver: 10 points. We gave full points to travel insurance policies that cover pre-existing medical conditions if certain conditions are met.
  • Missed connection: 10 points. Travel insurance plans with missed connection benefits of $1,000 per person or more received full points.
  • “Cancel for any reason” upgrade: 5 points. We gave points to travel insurance plans with optional “cancel for any reason” coverage that reimburses up to 75%.
  • Travel delay required waiting time: 5 points. We gave 5 points to travel insurance policies with travel delay benefits that kick in after a delay of 6 hours or less.
  • Cancel for work reasons: 5 points. If a travel insurance plan allows you to cancel your trip for work reasons, such as your boss requiring you to stay and work, we gave it 5 points.
  • Hurricane and severe weather: 5 points. Travel insurance plans that have a required waiting period for hurricane and weather coverage of 12 hours or less received 5 points.

Some travel insurance companies may offer plans with additional benefits or lower prices than the plans that scored the highest, so make sure to compare travel insurance quotes to see your full range of options.

Cheapest travel insurance FAQs

When buying travel insurance, cheapest is not always the best. The most affordable travel insurance plans typically offer fewer coverages with lower policy limits and few or no optional upgrades. Add up your total nonrefundable trip costs and compare travel insurance plans and available features that cover your travel expenses. This strategy can help you find the cheapest travel insurance policy that best protects you from financial loss if an unforeseen circumstance arises.

Get the coverage you need: Best travel insurance of 2024

According to our analysis, WorldTrips , Travel Insured International and Travelex offer the best cheap travel insurance. Policy coverage types and limits can vary by each travel insurance provider, so the best way to get the cheapest travel insurance plan is to compare several policies and companies to find the right fit for your budget.

A good rate for travel insurance depends on your budget and coverage needs. The most comprehensive travel insurance plan is usually not the cheapest. But cheap trip insurance may not have enough coverage or the types of coverage you want. Comparing different levels of coverage and how much they cost can help you find the best cheap insurance for travel.

The average cost of travel insurance is between 5% to 6% of your total travel expenses for one trip, according to our analysis of rates. However, you may find cheaper travel insurance if you opt for a plan with fewer benefits or lower coverage limits. How much you pay for travel insurance will also depend on the number of travelers covered, their ages, the length of the trip and any upgrades you add to your plan.

Travel insurance covers nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs — up to the policy coverage limits — when your trip is interrupted or canceled for a covered reason outlined in your plan documents. Even the cheapest travel insurance policies usually provide coverage for:

  • Medical emergencies.
  • Trip delays.
  • Trip interruption.
  • Trip cancellation.
  • Lost, stolen or damaged luggage.

However, if you’re looking to save on travel insurance, you can shop for a policy that only has travel medical insurance and does not include benefits for trip cancellation .

Even when you buy cheap travel insurance, you can often use upgrade options to customize your policy to meet your specific needs.

Some common travel insurance add-ons you may want to consider include:

  • Rental car damage coverage.
  • Medical bundle.
  • Security bundle.
  • Accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
  • Adventure sports bundle.
  • Pet bundle.
  • Wedding bundle.
  • “Cancel for work reasons” coverage.
  • “Interruption for any reason” (IFAR) coverage.
  • “Cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage .

Planning a vacation here’s your 2024 summer travel insurance guide.

The joy of a summer vacation. But do you have protection for your trip?

Planning a vacation this summer? Yeah, you and just about everyone else.

More than 9 out of 10 Americans say they'll travel more this year, according to a recent Nationwide Travel Insurance survey . Most of those trips will happen in June, July and August.

Not just that, but 40 percent of the respondents say they'll spend more this year than last year. So how do you protect your vacation investment?

Travel insurance is the standard answer, but what kind of insurance — and how do you find it? That's the question many Americans are wrestling with as they make their travel plans.

Protecting your vacation is a serious concern this summer, experts say.

“Travelers are beefing up their trip protection with security advisory and extraction protection," notes Dan Richards, CEO of The Global Rescue Companies .

It's not just that they're spending more. It's that there's more to lose. The ongoing war in Ukraine, the Hamas attacks on Israel, and other violent conflicts have made travel insurance a key part of trip planning.

This summer may break travel records, experts say.

Apple Confirms Innovative iPhone 16 Pro Upgrade

Wwe smackdown results winners and grades after wrestlemania 40, ‘civil war’ star on why the film’s president is not based on donald trump, it's going to be a busy summer for travel.

Overall policy sales for the 2024 summer travel season are up this year, but there's a spike in sales for policies in August, which is typically the busiest time of the summer. "Sales are up more than 25% over last year," says Stan Sandberg, co-founder of travel insurance site TravelInsurance.com .

Western Europe continues to be the most popular summer destination for Americans, with some notable hotspots. Travel insurance sales for Greece are up over 60% this year compared with 2023, followed by Norway and Portugal, which are up 57% and 52%, respectively, according to Sandberg.

Everyone's travel insurance needs are different, according to the pros.

What should you insure when you travel this summer?

Laura Heidt, the insurance desk manager for Brownell Travel in Birmingham, Ala., says there are some things every travel insurance policy should cover this summer.

"I always recommend people insure for the unexpected, such as flight delays, missed connections and medical coverage while out of the country," she says. "If you are willing to forgo the cancellation and delay coverages, which are typically the most expensive parts of a policy, you should still, absolutely, cover yourself with at least the medical component."

Heidt says she's seen a 10% boost in travel insurance sales for this summer compared with the same time last year, and many people are opting for the pricier "cancel for any reason" policies, which allow you to cancel your trip and receive a partial refund of your prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses.

Travel insurance companies are seeing a similar trend.

"A majority of travelers choose a comprehensive travel insurance plan which includes coverage for trip cancellation, emergency medical, lost or delayed baggage and delay," explains Tim Dodge, vice president of marketing at Arch RoamRight .

He says this year, travelers are purchasing travel insurance on average within 11 days of their trip deposit to receive the additional benefit of the waiver exclusion for pre-existing conditions.

If you're traveling with kids, you'll need extra travel insurance protection.

Get a policy that's tailored to your needs

Travel insurance comes in all shapes and sizes. So you'll want to try a few on for size before you buy. You can actually do that, since most policies have a "free look" period that makes them fully refundable for the first week or two (depending on the policy).

"It's important to consider your specific travel plans and any potential disruptions in order to protect your investment," says Robert Gallagher, president of the US Travel Insurance Association (USTIA).

He says traditional plans offer coverage for unexpected cancellations, interruptions, delays, emergency medical expenses and lost or delayed baggage. For international travel, USTIA advises opting for a plan with emergency medical and medical evacuation coverage.

It also depends on who you're traveling with. For example, if you're traveling with your children, you'll want to consider a family-friendly priced travel insurance plan. But your destination also matters, says Carol Mueller, vice president at Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (BHTP).

"For young families, I typically recommend the ExactCare plan due to its pricing of two children at no additional cost for every one adult on the policy," she says. "However, for families venturing abroad, I’d suggest considering a plan like BHTP's LuxuryCare, which is designed to meet the distinctive needs of a high-investment vacation.”

You have choices when it comes to family coverage. For example, Allianz’s OneTrip Prime plan also includes coverage for kids 17 and younger when traveling with a parent or grandparent.

Medical evacuations can be expensive.

Look beyond travel insurance for extra protection

Mike Hallman, CEO of the air medical transport and travel security program Medjet , says MedjetHorizon memberships are selling briskly. They offer 24/7 security and crisis response, as well as transportation to a hospital at home if you're injured. Travelers are skittish even if they aren't going bungee-jumping.

"With geopolitical tensions still growing — all the riots in France, Italy, Ecuador and other tourist destinations over the last year — and crime causing the threat level to be raised for the Bahamas and Jamaica, it’s no wonder," he adds.

He makes a good point. Travel insurance can cover many of the events you're likely to encounter, such as a missed connection, lost luggage or a medical emergency. But it's also important to know what isn't covered — and to make plans accordingly.

Beware of travel insurance "overconfidence"

The summer travel season is still a few months away, but insurance experts are worried. Yes, they've seen a general uptick in insurance sales, but some travelers remain unprotected.

"We've started to see early signs that travelers are exercising less caution and are slightly less likely to sign up for travel insurance," says Joe Cronin, CEO of International Citizens Insurance .

By comparison, travelers purchased plenty of medical insurance in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic. Cronin believes travelers were terrified of getting stuck with COVID-19 in a foreign country without insurance.

"To those who are thinking about traveling internationally without travel insurance, my recommendation is to spend a few minutes looking deeper before deciding," he adds.

Some types of insurance, such as a standalone medical policy, cost just a few dollars a day. A medical evacuation membership is also affordable. And even full-featured travel insurance policies can be cost-effective when you consider the benefits.

"Don’t put your summer travel memories, or your investment, at risk by forgoing the right vacation coverage," says Daniel Durazo, director of communications at Allianz Partners USA . "With international travel peaking during the summer season, an unprotected trip can leave travelers on the hook for costs resulting from an unexpected trip delay or medical emergency abroad."

Bottom line: Seriously consider travel insurance to protect your trip — and don't be overconfident. You never know what might happen this summer.
