Dubai Metro Red Line

The Dubai Metro Red Line is one of the most important pieces of transport infrastructure in the city. It’s responsible for connecting some of Dubai’s most popular areas and destinations.

If you’re visiting Dubai and plan on using public transport, then you’ll certainly be using the Red Line. In this article, we’ll discuss everything you need to know about it.

Train on the Red Line, near Airport Terminal 3 Metro Station

The main section of the Dubai Metro Red Line runs between Centrepoint and Expo 2020 , passing Dubai International Airport, and going through Deira and Bur Dubai. It then follows the Sheikh Zayed Road to Jabal Ali, calling at destinations such as World Trade Centre, Business Bay, the Dubai Mall, and Dubai Marina, before heading to the exhibition site.

A branch line of the Red Line runs from Jabal Ali to UAE Exchange . To travel to UAE Exchange or other stations on the branch line you’ll need to change trains at Jabal Ali.

Before the opening of the Route 2020 extension , trains ran non-stop from Centrepoint to UAE Exchange.

Financial Centre Metro Station

The Red Line connects to the Green Line at two transfer stations; Union Metro Station and BurJuman Metro Station .

Ticket barrier at Union Metro Station

Six stations on the Red Line are underground ( Deira City Centre , Al Rigga , Union , BurJuman , Jumeirah Golf Estate s, and Dubai Investment Park ). UAE Exchange is at ground level. The rest are elevated.

Platform at Al Rigga Metro Station

There are two large park-and-ride facilities on the line where drivers can park their cars free of charge. Centrepoint Metro Station (close to Dubai International Airport) has spaces for 2,700 vehicles while Jabal Ali Metro Station (west of Dubai Marina) can accommodate 3,000 vehicles.

Sightseeing via Metro: Take the Red Line Tour of Los Angeles

Lightvision, LLC/Getty Images

While car culture dominates Los Angeles , most of LA's main attractions are accessible via the LA Metro subway and over-ground train system. Of all the Los Angeles Metro lines, the Red Line has the highest density of attractions within walking distance. It's also the fastest since it's the only one that's all underground. This Metro Red Line tour will show you how to see some of LA's most famous sights and some lesser-known gems within an easy walk (or a little farther walk) of the Metro Stations. The entire line takes 29 minutes from Union Station to the North Hollywood Arts and Theatre District if you don't get off in between. The Downtown LA stations are so close together, with so many attractions in between, that you may find yourself walking from one station to the next rather than taking the train.

Aside from the attractions, you can visit from the Metro Red Line, you can also take a free Art Tour of the Metro art installations.

Union Station

Union Station is the Downtown LA terminus of the Red Line. It connects you to Metrolink inter-city commuter trains and numerous bus lines as well as the Metro Gold Line to  East LA and Pasadena. Right across Alameda Street from Union Station, you'll find El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument (Olvera Street), which includes LA Plaza museum of Mexican culture in LA, the Chinese American Museum ,and The Italian American Museum of Los Angeles in addition to its most popular feature, the Mexican Marketplace with its many vendors of Mexican imports and Mexican restaurants.

To the right of El Pueblo from Union Station at Alameda and Main Street is the southeast corner of New Chinatown . The Chinatown Gate at Broadway is just a couple short blocks straight up Cesar Chavez Avenue, but it's 4 more blocks up to Chinatown Central Plaza. You can also take the Gold Line one stop from Union Station to the Chinatown Station, which is a block and a half from Chinatown Central Plaza.

If you walk left out of Union Station, you'll be in Little Tokyo, where you'll find the Geffen Contemporary, a branch of the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Japanese American National Museum as well as numerous Japanese shops and restaurants.

From the south end of Olvera Street at El Pueblo, you're just a block and a freeway overpass from LA City Hall, which is a little closer to the Civic Center Metro Station.

Civic Center Metro Station

The Civic Center Metro Station lets you off in the middle of the three-block expanse of Grand Park with exits toward City Hall (Broadway/Spring Street) at the bottom of the hill and exits toward the Music Center (Hill Street/Grand Ave) at the top of the hill.

Grand Park itself has a small botanic garden, grassy areas, and benches as well as a large fountain at the top with a light show at night. Kids and adults cool off in the water in the summer. There's also a Starbucks near the foot of the fountain. The park hosts weekly outdoor yoga and various music events and festivals.

The Los Angeles Music Center on Grand Avenue includes five performance venues, one of which is Frank Gehry's stunning Walt Disney Concert Hall . There are free tours of both the Disney Concert Hall and the main Music Center Campus.

Next to the Disney Concert Hall heading south on Grand Avenue is The Broad , LA's newest museum of contemporary art, and across the street from that the main campus of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA).

Behind the MOCA and the Omni Hotel in California Plaza, an outdoor performance venue used by Grand Performances summer concert series. The Angels Flight funicular railway - when it's operational – travels one block from California Plaza down to Hill Street. There's a stairway adjacent to Angels Flight for when it's not operating. At this point, you're closer to the Pershing Square Metro Station.

Pershing Square Metro Station

If you're heading for California Plaza, the Pershing Square Station is closer than Civic Center. Although Pershing Square itself is a block further south, there's an exit from the Metro station at 4th and Hill, a block below California Plaza. If Angeles Flight is running, you can catch a ride up the hill, otherwise, it's a steep walk up.

Pershing Square is also the closest stop for Grand Central Market , which is across from the Hill Street end of Angels Flight. If you walk through Grand Central Market to Broadway, the Bradbury Building is across the street on the other side. Just a square brick building on the outside, the elaborate ironwork inside was inspired by a science fiction novel and has been used as a movie location in a number of films.

This part of Broadway stretching several blocks south is known for the density of classic theatres, most of which are closed most of the time. A few are in use as clubs or churches, but they all open up for one night in January for Night on Broadway.

If you exit the Pershing Square Station at 5th and Hill, you'll be at Pershing Square itself with its colorful geometric sculptures. Facing the square is the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. It's worth stepping inside to check out the ornate lobby and Gallery Bar.

Pass Pershing Square and the Biltmore walking up 5th Street (or walk through the Biltmore) to reach the US Bank Tower, where you'll find OUE Skyspace LA with its 70th-floor Skyslide and Observation Deck.

Down the block, The Standard hotel at Flower and 6th has one of the most famous rooftop bars in the city. The romantic Perch restaurant and bar, one of the Coolest Downtown LA Bars , is on Hill Street right across 5th Street from the Metro exit.

On the south side of Pershing Square is the Jewelry District and a couple blocks east, centered around Spring Street, is Gallery Row, home to more than 50 art galleries, museums, theatres, and public art installations all within walking distance. The Downtown LA Art Walk takes place on Gallery Row on the 2nd Thursday of each month.

7th Street/Metro Center Station

7th Street/Metro Center Station is the closest Red Line Station to the attractions at LA Live, about 5 blocks south. It's also the connecting station for the Blue Line or Expo Line, which both have a stop closer to LA Live and the Convention Center.

This is the closest station to the Fig at 7th shopping center and food court, which you might find interesting if you're staying downtown and don't have a lot of options, but as far as shopping and eating go, it doesn't measure up to the larger malls and shopping options in Los Angeles .

The Expo Line will take you past USC and the Exposition Park Museums and across town through Culver City to Santa Monica .

The Blue Line will also get you closer to the LA Fashion District on the way south to Long Beach .

Westlake/Macarthur Park Station and Up Vermont

The Westlake/Macarthur Park station is at Macarthur Park, where you'll find an interesting array of summer concerts at the Levitt Pavilion LA. Among numerous taquerias and other Mexican restaurants, another notable landmark at this stop is the original Langer's Delicatessen that has been open at this location since 1947.

The Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles on the far side of Macarthur Park often hosts art and cultural exhibits, film screenings, and music events.

If you're on the Red Line, you can relax and breeze through the Wilshire/Vermont Station. If you happen to be on the Purple Line, this is where you'll want to switch to the Red Line unless you're heading to the Wiltern Theatre, the Line Hotel or Normandie Hotel, or just want to embark on a deeper exploration of LA's vast Koreatown , which is about ten times the size of Chinatown.

Vermont & Sunset Station

Architecture, local art, and sunsets are the features attractions at Barnsdall Art Park in Hollywood. The park at the top of Olive Hill features Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House , which you can tour for a fee, and the Los Angeles Municipal Gallery, which you can visit for free. The sunsets are also free. During the summer, the park hosts outdoor theatre and wine events.

Another quirky attraction nearby on Hollywood Boulevard just east of Vermont (cross the street and turn right on Hollywood to the middle of the block) is La Luz de Jesus Gallery, a showcase for underground, counterculture art, and gifts.

There are also some popular nightlife options nearby, including Rockwell Table and Stage, where Jeff Goldblum and his jazz band are regularly in the entertainment lineup.

Unless you're looking for Thai or Armenian food, you can probably skip Hollywood & Western Station, although the Metro Station itself and adjacent tile apartment building form an interesting piece of public art. There are a few low-end tourist hotels in the vicinity.

Hollywood & Vine Station

Hollywood and Vine is the second heart of Hollywood. You'll find the east end of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Capitol Records Building, views of the Hollywood Sign , the Pantages Theatre for Broadway shows, the Fonda Theatre for indie artist concerts, Avalon nightclub, and tons of other clubs, restaurants, bars, and hotels clustered right around this intersection.

The creepy Museum of Death, one of LA's Most Unusual Museums , is just east on Hollywood Boulevard at Gower

On Sunday mornings, it's the closest stop to the Hollywood Farmer's Market on Ivar north of Sunset, which is a good spot for people watching.

You can hoof it a couple blocks down Vine to Sunset, turn right and admire the geodesic Cinerama Dome. Scout for celebs hitting the flics at the ArcLight Cinemas or shopping for beats at Amoeba Music.

Hollywood & Highland Station

Hollywood and Highland is the real heart of Hollywood with the most attractions clustered in a small area. The Metro Station is under the Hollywood & Highland Center , which includes a shopping mall, restaurants, the Dolby Theatre , Dave & Buster's and Hard Rock Café, and incorporates the adjacent Chinese Theatre and Madame Tussauds . It also houses the office of Starline Tours, and a number of other LA bus tours and walking tours depart from here.

Some of the most popular stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame are right out front, and you'll find costumed characters on the sidewalk ready to pose with you for tips.

Immediately across the street, you'll find The Disney Entertainment Center, where Jimmy Kimmel, Live! is taped , El Capitan Theatre , which screens the latest Disney movies with live pre-shows and prop exhibits, and the Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Disney Store.

Cattycorner across the intersection of Hollywood and Highland, Ripley's Believe It Or Not is on the corner, with the Hollywood Museum in the pink Max Factor building next door on Highland.

Heading left down Hollywood Boulevard from the Metro, you'll find the Hollywood Wax Museum, the Guinness World Records Museum, the Museum of Broken Relationships, the Egyptian Theatre, the historic Musso & Frank Grill and a bevy of Hollywood nightclubs and bars all up and down the side streets.

You can walk the three and a half long blocks uphill on Highland to the Hollywood Bowl , which has a museum you can visit during the day, or catch the shuttle from Hollywood & Highland.

Universal City Station & North Hollywood

The Universal City Station is directly across from the Universal Studios Hollywood /NBC Universal complex. It's quite a long walk up the hill to Universal CityWalk and the theme park entrance, but there's a free shuttle from the Metro.

The Red Line makes its final stop at the north end of the North Hollywood Arts and Theatre District at Lankershim and Chandler. There are a couple dozen small theatres within a few blocks of each other. Some have resident professional companies with full seasons of shows and others rent out to independent productions. With various discount entertainment programs , you can often see a live play in this neighborhood (and some others) for less than the cost of a movie ticket.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

Never been to Moscow or Russia but my family has. Many great spots and a lot of culture. Your itinerary sounds fantastic and covers a lot despite it is only a short period of time.

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

OMG I dream to visit Moscow someday! Hope the visa processing would be okay (and become more affordable) so I could pursue my dream trip!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…

Metro and Transit Partners Announce Travel Alternatives for Summer Red Line Closure

red line travel

Metro, along with the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), Montgomery County, and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will offer a range of travel options for customers affected by this summer’s closures on the Red Line starting Saturday, June 1 through Saturday, August 31.

Per WMATA : In addition to free Local, Limited, and Express shuttle buses running, Metro has put together a comprehensive plan of alternatives and mitigations. Working with MDOT State Highway Administration (SHA), additional bus only lanes will be created for the summer closure to alleviate traffic for shuttle buses. Metro is also collaborating with DDOT to provide additional remedies for Express Shuttle Bus service to/from downtown DC.

Four stations will be closed for the duration of construction – Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen, and Silver Spring – with the Takoma Station closed June 1 – June 29 only. Due to capacity limitations at Fort Totten and Takoma, Red Line trains will run every 6 minutes all day, including rush hours when trains normally run every 5 minutes. Red Line customers may notice more crowded trains at peak times. After 9:30 PM, trains will run every 10 minutes as normally scheduled. Free shuttle buses will run every 4-8 minutes, providing frequent connections to the closed stations.

In partnership with MDOT SHA, more than seven miles of bus only lanes will be created along sections of Georgia Ave between Glenmont and Silver Spring and adjustments to signal timing to prioritize buses. In the District, Metro has engaged with DDOT on signal timing and additional mitigations to provide faster, more reliable shuttle bus service, some of which may include parking restrictions to increase road capacity, and other measures to alleviate congestion.

The following maps illustrate the dedicated bus lanes along the corridor that will speed bus travel:

red line travel

The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is offering discounted fares on MARC Train and Commuter Bus service from stops in the vicinity of the impacted stations.

The closure was planned in coordination with the MTA Purple Line project. A new mezzanine will be built to connect the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center and the future Purple Line Station to Metro’s Silver Spring platform, enhancing connections for Metro, MARC Train, and bus customers. This requires the closure of the Silver Spring Station for several months.

As a result, Metro grouped together additional maintenance, repairs, and improvements on the Red Line to be completed at the same time. This allows Metro to utilize a singular outage over three months, rather than more than eight months of weekend closures and disruptions if the work were done individually in shorter segments.

Metro’s work will enhance safety and reliability, modernize the system, and create a better customer experience. Among the improvements are rail renewal, tunnel leak mitigation, automatic train control system replacements, traction power cables installation, drain pumping station replacement, tunnel standpipe replacement, elevator and escalator maintenance, and new digital signage.

Aerial Moscow city panorama

Some basic advice for travelers:

Don't be afraid to book a hotel that’s not in the city center, even if it’s a little further out. But make sure there’s a metro station nearby. Even from the most distant metro stations it takes no longer than 30 minutes to reach the city center, and close to many of these stations you can find a nice park, be it Izmailovsky or the Soviet-era VDNKh, or perhaps an exceptional historical site or museum. In addition, the metro is also an important site that deserves to be enjoyed. Check out the interactive metro map here metro.yandex.ru.

  • Hotel  Astrus  – $60-150* (next to Yugo-Zapadnaya metro station, red Line 1)
  • Hotel complex in Izmailovo:  Alfa ,  Beta ,  Gamma ,  Vega ,  Delta  – from $40 to $400 (five big hotels of various quality next to the huge Izmailovsky Park and Partizanskaya metro station on blue Line 3 and Moscow Center Railroad)
  • Holiday Inn Sokolniki  (metro station Sokolniki, red Line 1, next to the beautiful park) – $60-200
  • Hotel  Cosmos  (next to VDNKh metro station on orange Line 6 and VDNKh, with space museum and oceanarium inside) – $50-220

If you’re traveling for a sporting or big musical event :

An aerial view of Luzhniki Stadium

An aerial view of Luzhniki Stadium

We strongly recommend inquiring in advance about your stay before such major events as FIFA World Cup™. Prices are quite high at these times and hotels are overbooked, so you might have to rent an apartment, which is not always a guarantee of a good price-quality relationship.

If you need to be clos e to Spartak Stadium :

  • Aquarium hotel , $130-190
  • DOSAAF hotel , $30-80
  • Happy Hotel , $72
  • Mini hostel  next to the stadium, $10-40

For  Luzhniki Stadium :

  • Hotel  Corston , $80-300
  • Hotel  Luzhniki , $145-160
  • Hotel  Yunost , $80-130
  • Sweet Dream  hostel, $10-30

For  CSKA Arena :

  • Triumph Palace Boutique  Hotel, $145-320
  • ART  Hotel, $40-180
  • Aeropolis  Hotel, $40-140
  • CSKA  Hotel, $40-70

For  VTB Ice Arena :

  • Maxima Panorama  Hotel, $60-200
  • Apart-Hotel  PointZil , $45-95
  • Best Seasons  Hotel, $45-80
  • Hostels  Rus – Avtozavodskaya  $7-10

On a business trip :

Moscow City business center

Moscow City business center

If your personal assistant hasn’t booked a good hotel, or if you don’t have a personal assistant yet, then it’s better to stay close to your office or conference hall, or a rail station with Aeroexpress trains to airports.

  • Ibis  Kievskaya  situated on blue Line 3 is fine if you need the Moscow City business hub or Crocus City. If you need Vnukovo Airport, then the nearby Kievskaya rail station is right there with a fast train to the airport – $50
  • Nearby is  Radisson Slavyanskaya  Hotel by Kievskaya metro and rail station, $100-300
  • Novotel Moscow  is right in the Moscow City business center, from $80
  • Hotel Crocus Star  15-minute walk to Myakinino metro station, Crocus City Hall and Crocus Expo. Nearby is the indoor ski and snowboard venue, Snezh.com, $70

If you want to party hard :

Patriarshiye Ponds

Patriarshiye Ponds

Moscow has great nightlife, and clubs open 24/7 can be found almost everywhere. But these places have a large concentration of restaurants and bars: Pyatnitskaya Street, Patriarshiye Ponds, Tverskaya Streets and the former Red October factory zone. The best option will be to choose something nearby to save money on taxis (the Moscow metro works from 5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m.).

  • Marco Polo Presnja  Hotel, $70-250
  • Peking Hotel  with a rooftop bar, $65-150
  • Citycomfort Hotel  Novokuznetskaya, $40-60
  • Fabrika hostel gallery café , $46-120

If you’re in town for museums and cultural life :

Aivazovsky at the Tretyakov Gallery

Aivazovsky at the Tretyakov Gallery

If you’ve come to Moscow for the first time, the most important things to see can be found in a maximum range of 20 minutes walk from each other. There are two options. The first is the area near the Kremlin, State Historical Museum, Pushkin Museum for Fine Arts and Multimedia Art Museum. In that case, the following hotels will suit you:

  • The National  – just 5 minutes walk from Kremlin. If you can’t afford staying here, have breakfast at the Dr Zhivago restaurant; from $270
  • In Time Hotel  next to Kremlin and Biblioteka Imeni Lenina metro station; $70-100

Option No. 2: if you prefer the Garage Museum in Gorky Park, the State Tretyakov Gallery and New Tretyakov Gallery, then:

  • President  Hotel, $90-200
  • Medea hotel  Novokuznetskaya metro station, $90-160

A riverside room please :

One of the Stalin's seven sisters, former hotel Ukraina

One of the Stalin's seven sisters, former hotel Ukraina

The Moskva River might be not as famous as St. Petersburg’s Neva, but its banks are no less picturesque.

  • Swisshotel   Krasnye Kholmy  is not far from Paveletskaya metro station and the House of Music concert hall, from $190
  • Riverside Hotel  (from $120) shares with  Radisson Royal  (from $270) in a Stalin-era skyscraper and former Ukraine hotel building. Nearby is a pier for Moskva River boat tours.
  • Moscow Point Red October  on the former factory site and full of night clubs , $90-170
  • Ivan Chai - hotel and coffee  is not far from Kolomensky Park and metro station, $40-60

If you’re a badass luxury traveler :

A Kremlin-view room in Baltschug Kempinski

A Kremlin-view room in Baltschug Kempinski

These hotels don’t need special introduction; they have history and offer services at the highest level. But they’re not affordable for everyone. Foreign celebrities, presidents and sheikhs often stay here.

  • Four Seasons Hotel  Moscow – from $500; built anew based on the Stalin era plans; this is probably Moscow’s most expensive luxury hotel and the closest to the Kremlin.
  • The Ritz-Carlton , from $560, with Novikov restaurant on the first floor.
  • Ararat Park Hyatt , the rooftop bar has a fantastic view, from $400
  • Hotel Baltschug Kempinski  Moscow
  • St. Regis Moscow Nikolskaya , from $300
  • Metropol , from $200; the mosaics by Mikhail Vrubel on the façade can be enjoyed for free

Moscow Kremlin: skip-the-line tickets and 8 things not to miss

  • April 18, 2024

Moscow Kremlin: skip-the-line tickets and 8 things not to miss

The Moscow Kremlin, symbol of Russi! It’s the Kremlin’s wall that you can see on Red Square. The Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin are both listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites . We visited the Moscow Kremlin several times, with skip-the-line tickets and without, with my family, but also with my colleagues when I was living in Moscow.

Visit the Moscow Kremlin: tips and practical information

I will give here the key info to save time (and money) before the visit and once there:

  • Map, how to get there, opening hours
  • Entry tickets to the Kremlin and the Armoury Chamber, including skip-the-line entry tickets
  • Guided tours

Map of the Moscow Kremlin, how to get there and opening hours

The Kremlin is large, so I have created a map to help you find your bearings which you will find below. If you are interested in other Moscow maps, find them in Free Moscow Maps.

How to get there? Where is the entrance to the Moscow Kremlin?

  • The nearest metro station is Biblioteka Imeni Lenina (point 1 on the map) on the red line. On the other hand, even if we all have in mind, the image of the Kremlin on Red Square, the entrance is NOT located directly on the square. There is an entrance on the Red Square, but it is for stuff only.
  • The entrance to the Kremlin is on another side of the Kremlin (point 3 on the map).
  • Check also our blog post about Where to stay in Moscow? to be sure to stay in the most interesting districts of Moscow.

Opening hours

The Kremlin is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, except Thursday.

Good to know! It is not possible to enter the Kremlin territory with suitcases, bulky bags or animals. If you come with a suitcase anyway, there is a free concierge not far from the cash desks. The total dimensions must not exceed 150 cm (total, that is to say if we add the height, width and thickness). See the rules on the Kremlin website .

How to buy the entry tickets to visit Moscow Kremlin?

Several tickets. Later in the article I will describe in more detail what is behind the walls of the Moscow Kremlin, but we can already divide the Kremlin into several parts: the architectural ensemble of the Cathedral Square, the Armoury Chamber, the Diamond Fund and the Ivan-The-Great Bell Tower. There are entry tickets for each of these parts. So you have a choice. What is most visited is the architectural ensemble of the Cathedral Square.

Armoury Chamber. The number of entry tickets to the Armoury Chamber is limited, to make the visit more pleasant for visitors. As with the Cathedral Square, the entry tickets can be purchased online (see below). And I would recommend to buy tickets to the Armoury Chamber in advance.

There are two options for visiting the Kremlin without a guide : buy tickets in ticket offices once there OR then buy them on the Internet, then take them at the ticket offices on site with less queuing. On the other hand, if you want to have more information about the Kremlin, a guided tour can be interesting: skip-the-line, accompaniment and not necessarily expensive for many.

Buy tickets for the Kremlin on site

The ticket offices are open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day, except Thursday . They are located in the Alexandrovsky Garden which runs along the walls of the Moscow Kremlin ( point 2 on the map above). It is possible to pay by bank card or in cash (rubles). See the post How to pay in Russia ?, if you need more info.

Good to know! Saturday is a day to avoid because there are many more people than the other days, especially in the morning. In general, the crowds are higher in the morning.

Moscow Kremlin guided tours

As tickets for the Armoury Chamber are limited, to go anyway you can go through guided tours, in groups or with a private guide. Certified guides have fast-track tickets and may still have seats. In addition, a guided tour in the Kremlin is worth it: you learn a lot and with many it is not so expensive, especially now with a fairly weak ruble.

With a private English-speaking guide

Only a certified guide is allowed to show you the Moscow Kremlin.

From June to September, the Kremlin is very visited and even official guides cannot have tickets. During this period, one of the solutions for a guided tour is a group visit.

Moscow Kremlin group tour in English

The second solution is to visit the Kremlin and the Armoury Chamber in a group. This is surprising, but it is not necessarily more economical than with a private guide. However, if there are no more entry tickets, this is a good solution.

Can we take pictures inside the Moscow Kremlin?

According to the Moscow Kremlin website , “it is forbidden to take photos and videos” inside the Armoury Chamber and the cathedrals”. There is no restriction for the exterior. You can still try to take photos inside the buildings, but the guards, often guards, will quickly point you out to stop.

Estimated visit time

A visit to the Kremlin and the Palace of Armor takes around 4 hours with a guided tour. If you go alone (without guide), it’s more or less equivalent. If you have fast-track tickets or you visit the Kremlin and the Palace of Armor with a certified guide, you also save a little time.

Good to know. There is nothing to eat inside the Kremlin, except maybe small snacks or ice cream. On the other hand, there are a few fast food restaurants near Okhotny Ryad station, but above all a lot of addresses on Nikolskaya Street , near Red Square and the Bolshoi Theater.

The Moscow Kremlin: what to see?

Kremlin means fortress in Slavic. The Moscow Kremlin is therefore not the only Kremlin in Russia. Nevertheless, it is the best known kremlin. It housed first the residence of the tsars, then the seat of the Soviet government, and today the Russian government. Finally, what is behind its walls?

  • Cathedrals and churches;
  • Exhibitions and museums;
  • Palace of the Patriarch;
  • State buildings which are not to be visited.

Most of the Kremlin to see is located on the Cathedral Square .

Cathedrals and churches of the Moscow Kremlin

Dormition cathedral.

(point 4 on the map, often called the Cathedral of the Assumption)

Built in 1475 and 1479 under the direction of an Italian architect, it was built in place of a small church erected by Ivan I to mark the accession of Moscow to the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. The first stone church in Moscow, it was used for the coronation and marriage ceremonies of the Czars, as well as for important events of the heads of the Church.

Annunciation Cathedral

(point 5 on the map)

Built in 1489, this cathedral has also preserved magnificent fragments of paintings from its time. The floor is in jasper. The cathedral was a private place for the Czars to gather and confess. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the chaplain was the personal confessor of members of the Tsar’s family .

Visit Kremlin

Archangel Saint Michael’s Cathedral

(point 6 on the map)

Built in 1508 by an Italian architect (again!), One finds outside and inside the cathedral of Venetian Renaissance features. 46 tombs continue the necropolis of the cathedral. It is the necropolis of the princes of Moscow (independent principality of Moscow), and the first tsars of Russia. Here are the photos (author: poznamka).

Church of the Deposition-of-the-Robe

(point 7 on the map)

Built from 1484 to 1485, the church was built in honor of the relics of the Virgin brought from Palestine to Constantinople in 452.

Ivan The Great Bell Tower

(point 8 on the map)

The bell tower is 81 meters high. Built in 1508 and blown up by Napoleon’s army in 1812, the tower and the bell tower were rebuilt soon after. Also note that a beautiful panoramic view opens from the bell tower over the city.

Museums of the Moscow Kremlin

Armoury chamber.

(point 9 on the map)

This museum of applied arts brings together an exceptional collection of the treasures of the tsars. There we find jewelry, crowns, costumes, diamonds, thrones, weapons and armor, all the riches of Russian princes and tsars accumulated during their centuries of reign.

Kremlin Museum of Treasures and Antiquities

(point 10 on the map)

This museum is located in the basement of the Annunciation Cathedral. It contains objects found during archaeological excavations on the territory of the Kremlin. They are mainly objects from medieval Russia.

Patriarch’s Palace

(point 11 on the map)

Built on the orders of Patriarch Nikon in 1655, this palace includes several rooms and a church, the Church of the Twelve Apostles. The particularity of this place is the cruciform room of 300m² which has no pillars. There are also objects that occupied the rooms: furniture, the gospels, icons.

Other Kremlin attractions

There are other interesting attractions you can see during your visit to the Moscow Kremlin. For example, you can take a refreshing break in the Taïniski garden. In addition, in a small corner of the garden is a platform for helicopters, it can be used by the Russian President in an emergency!

Tsar Pouchka (point 12) is also an attraction (especially well known to Russians). It’s a gigantic cannon that weighs almost 40 tonnes! The Guinness Book of Records considers it the largest howitzer ever built.

In the same spirit, you can also see Tsar Kolokol (point 13) , a gigantic bell tower which is located very close to the bell tower of Ivan the Great.

Connecting 95th/Dan Ryan to 130th Street

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is extending the Red Line from the existing terminal at 95th/Dan Ryan to 130th Street. The 5.6- mile Red Line Extension (RLE) will include four new fully-accessible stations near 103rd Street, 111th Street, Michigan Avenue, and 130th Street. Multimodal connections at each station will include bus, bike, pedestrian, and park & ride facilities.

Check out our social media pages!

Project Benefits

  • Improving the Transit Experience : RLE will provide up to 30-minute time savings to riders traveling from the future 130th Street station to the Loop and facilitate access to multiple CTA rail lines and bus routes.
  • A Better System for Everyone:  RLE will help Far South Side residents reliably access jobs and opportunities outside their neighborhoods, which includes jobs within communities along the RLE project footprint and throughout the region.
  • New Opportunities for Chicagoans:  RLE will pay dividends locally during construction and, once implemented, RLE is estimated to generate more than 25,000 jobs throughout Cook County in the coming years.
  • Connecting People and Investing in Neighborhoods:  RLE will be one of the single biggest investments on the Far South Side in decades and is a critical investment for CTA to expand its rapid transit network. RLE is estimated to catalyze, or set the table, for $1.7 billion in real estate development in the half-mile station area between 2029-2040.

Red Line segment will close for three months this summer, Metro says

A section of Metro’s Red Line will close for three months this summer for maintenance and construction work, Metro announced Tuesday.

The work will be executed in two phases: one from June 1 to June 29, which will shutter the Takoma, Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton and Glenmont stations, and the other from June 30 to Aug. 31, when Takoma will reopen while the others remain closed.

More than 15,000 people have used the five affected stations on an average weekday this year, according to Metro data .

Metro announced the planned closures in February, though at the time it did not have an exact timeline for the disruption in service.

During the closures, Metro plans to perform maintenance along the eastern end of the Red Line between Glenmont and Fort Totten. The Maryland Department of Transportation is concurrently starting construction of a mezzanine that will connect the Red Line station platform at the Silver Spring stop with a Purple Line light-rail station and improve connections with the MARC train and bus lines.

The Purple Line, a Maryland-run project that is still under construction, has long been marred by delays that have pushed its planned opening date to late 2027 and caused its cost to grow by billions of dollars.

While the stations are closed, Metro plans to run free shuttles between Fort Totten and Glenmont, stopping at all of the shuttered stations. There will also be limited shuttles making fewer stops between Fort Totten and Glenmont, as well as an express shuttle between Silver Spring and Metro Center in downtown D.C.

Joe McAndrew, assistant secretary of the Maryland Department of Transportation, said the construction work would significantly enhance local transit by connecting Metro, MARC and the Purple Line. “While this summer will be a tough summer in terms of trying to traverse the corridor due to the shutdown, this is a key enabling project that we’ve been after as a state for many years,” he said.

In the meantime, amid the disruption to Metro service, he said, “We’re asking for a bit of grace.”
