The Reputation Stadium Tour: Surprise Songs and Guests

Camila-Taylor-Charlie

The surprise songs, sometimes called secret songs or b-stage songs, they’ve become a hallmark of every Taylor Swift tour concert. It’s the time in which the Sparkly Dressed picks up the Sparkly Guitar (Sparkly Green in this era) and brings out a song from the vault. It’s a big vault, but somehow T-Swizzle has rummaged deep and brought some old cuts we thought we’d never hear again.

The surprise guests were rare but still amazing. Let’s not forget the amazing opening acts of Camila Cabello and Charli XCX.

All The Surprise Songs Taylor Swift Has Performed On Her "Reputation" Tour, And All The Ones She Needs To Sing

The B in B-stage actually stands for Blessed.

Ellie Bate

BuzzFeed Staff

In case you didn't know, the Queen of my Heart (otherwise known as Taylor Alison Swift) is currently living her best life on her Reputation Stadium Tour , and at every show she does an acoustic performance of a surprise song from her back catalog.

Without further ado, here are the surprise songs she's performed on her tour so far, and some others i think she ~should~ perform in my 100% expert opinion:.

Oh, and scroll all the way down for a handy playlist...

✨ THE SURPRISE SONGS SO FAR ✨

1. "all too well".

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Glendale, AZ, Pasadena, CA, and Arlington, TX

Taylor has performed "All Too Well" as a surprise song three times because she knows her own talent and she likes to play with our feelings. I was there for the Pasadena show and I spent the entire five minutes sobbing with my face in my hands because that's the power of "All Too Well".

2. "Wildest Dreams"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Santa Clara, CA, Philadelphia, PA, and Tokyo, Japan

This was a regular B-stage surprise song in Santa Clara, but then when her flying sparkly basket broke in Philadelphia, she performed it a capella while flying in the giant snake skeleton. Queen of crisis management!

3. "The Best Day"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Santa Clara, CA

She sang this on Mother's Day and honestly, just punch me in the face, I have too many feelings.

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Pasadena, CA

Before she sang this, Taylor was like, "I was trying to think of what song to play at the Rose Bowl, and I just went, 'Well, roses are red...'" Her mind!

5. "Holy Ground"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Seattle, WA

Probably the second best song Taylor Swift has ever written and I am bitter that I wasn't there to see her sing it.

6. "Teardrops On My Guitar"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Denver, CO

We love a classic!

7. "Our Song"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Chicago, IL and Philadephia, PA

Clearly Taylor was on a ~let's play songs from the debut album~ kick during this part of the tour, and I'm not complaining at all. She also sang this a capella during the sparkly basket malfunction.

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Chicago, IL, Foxborough, MA, and Sydney, Australia

Squad member Martha Hunt suggested this one for the Chicago show, and obviously, Taylor granted her wishes, because she is a great friend.

9. "I Knew You Were Trouble"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Manchester, UK and Perth, Australia

Before she sang this in Manchester, Taylor was like, "Even if you don't know the words, it's easy to remember this bit before the chorus". I don't know anyone who doesn't know the words to "I Knew You Were Trouble", but Taylor is just humble like that!!!

10. "I Don't Wanna Live Forever"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Manchester, UK

A lowkey bop/collaboration with Zayn that they recorded for the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack. Oooh!

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Dublin, IE

The only negative thing I have to say about this is that she didn't replace the green guitar with a green banjo.

12. "How You Get The Girl"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

This song invented wedding vows.

13. "So It Goes..."

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: London, UK

So, this is the only song from Reputation that didn't make it to the regular setlist, but then Taylor sang it as the surprise song in London, and since then she's sang it a few times in place of "Dancing With Our Hands Tied". No shade to "So It Goes...", but that's not what "DWOHT" deserves.

14. "Fifteen"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

The fifteenth show of the tour, of course!!! We love a mathematician!

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Louisville, KY

I'm not going to talk too much about this one because thinking about the Speak Now Tour makes me emo .

16. "Sparks Fly"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Columbus, OH

Again, one of the best songs Taylor has ever written and probably deserved to be on the regular setlist but it's fine I guess!!!

17. "State of Grace"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Washington, DC

Taylor really decided to incinerate my wig when she sang "Sparks Fly" and then "State Of Grace" one after the other.

18. "Haunted"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

If my wig wasn't already incinerated after she performed "State of Grace", it for sure is now!!! "Haunted" goes off!

19. "Never Grow Up"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Philadelphia, PA

Taylor sang "Never Grow Up" in Philadelphia after spending the day at her childhood home , which is adorable. It was also my birthday and honestly, that just makes me want to cry.

20. "Treacherous"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Philadelphia was truly blessed to get "Treacherous".

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Cleveland, OH

I really thought Taylor was going to sing "Babe" when I saw her in Manchester because it was the day before the music video came out, but she sang it in Cleveland instead, and I can't pretend I'm not upset about it.

22. "Welcome To New York"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: East Rutherford, NJ

This was the first show in New-York-but-technically-New-Jersey and if she hadn't performed "Welcome To New York" the world probably would've imploded.

23. "Fearless"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

The second show in NJ was a rain show, and we all know how much Taylor stans rain . Taylor singing "with you I'd dance in a storm in my best dress, fearless" in the middle of a rainstorm was honestly one of the most iconic moments of the tour so far.

24. "Enchanted"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Truly a classic. I can't believe Taylor didn't sing it earlier in the tour.

25. "Change"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Foxborough, MA

This song always makes me super emo because it's basically the "Long Live" of the Fearless era, and I stan both of those things hard.

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

"Mine"'s younger sister who her parents (me) lowkey like more.

27. "Out Of The Woods"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Toronto, ON and Auckland, NZ

We've known this was coming for a while, I'm just surprised it took this long.

28. "Come Back... Be Here"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Toronto, ON

Taylor allegedly promised a fan in a meet and greet that she'd sing this as one of the surprise songs but I didn't want to get my hopes up enough to believe her. And then she DID IT.

29. "A Place In This World"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Pittsburgh, PA

I honestly never even considered that we'd get to hear this song live in the year 2018 because it's 12 years old and everyone pays it dust. We love a queen who recognises her own talent!

30. "This Love"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Atlanta, GA

The softest song on 1989 said hi in Atlanta.

31. "The Lucky One"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

This song embodies the message of the Reputation era so much that I'm just surprised it took this long for it to pop up as a surprise song.

32. "Invisible"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Tampa, FL

I never thought we'd get to hear Taylor sing this song in 2018 but she performed it at the request of a fan who told her listening to the song had helped him before he came out. You think I'm emo? You got that right!

33. "Breathe"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Miami, FL

This is another song that Taylor has never performed live before, but she's really blessing our hearts and souls this tour. "The Moment I Knew" still has a chance!

34. "Better Man"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Nashville, TN

It was basically guaranteed that Taylor would sing one of her more country songs in Nashville, and she didn't disappoint, blessing us all with a performance of Little Big Town's "Better Man" (which she wrote, duh).

35. " Tim McGraw "

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

If any show was going to get more than one surprise song, it was gonna be Nashville. "Tim McGraw" was Taylor's first ever single and not only did she sing a piano version, but she brought out the actual real-life Tim McGraw and Faith Hill to sing it with her. That's a glow up!!!!!!!

36. "Jump Then Fall"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Detroit, MI

It's 2018 and Taylor Swift is singing songs from the Fearless Platinum Edition. Finally the attention it deserves!

37. "Begin Again"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Minneapolis, MN

This is a soft song about letting go of the people who've hurt you in the past and allowing new people into your life, and it's exactly what Taylor deserves this era.

38. "Tied Together With A Smile"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

If you haven't listened to this song from Taylor's debut album, you have to. She released it when she was sixteen, and the lyrics still make me cry at age 24.

39. "The Story Of Us"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Kansas City, MO

According to Taylor herself, she hasn't played this song since the Speak Now Tour, and that is a tragedy.

40. "Forever And Always"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Indianapolis, IN

Joe Jonas is shaking.

41. "Hey Stephen"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: St Louis, MO

Fearless is really getting her moment and I couldn't be more proud of her.

42. "Speak Now"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: New Orleans, LA

"Horrified looks from everyone in the room but I'm only looking at you" is actually about me screaming so loud at a Taylor Swift concert that I embarrass myself in front of everyone.

43. "Wonderland"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Houston, TX

Taylor waited until the very end of the tour's US leg to bring out one of the best songs on 1989 and it didn't disappoint.

44. "White Horse"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Arlington, TX

This is one of the saddest songs Taylor's written and her singing it in 2018 with a smile on her face really proved she's doing better than she ever was.

45. "I'm Only Me When I'm With You"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Melbourne, Australia

Taylor hasn't sang this since the Fearless era and she got on that stage and sang it on a Friday night beneath the stars as if I was going to be calm about it.

46. "Starlight"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Brisbane, Australia

I thought I was dreaming impossible things when I hoped for "Starlight" on the B-stage, but it turns out Taylor Swift can grant wishes!!!

47. "I Know Places"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Sang in: Tokyo, Japan

Taylor waited until the end of the tour to break out "I Know Places" and as much as I hated waiting for it, it was WORTH IT. Bless you, Taylor.

💖 THE SURPRISE SONGS WE NEED 💖

1. "out of the woods".

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Frankly, I'm shocked that she hasn't performed this one yet. It has to be coming soon.

UPDATE: Taylor sang this in Toronto, ON

2. "The Story Of Us"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Basically just because it's a bop.

UPDATE: Taylor sang this in Kansas City, MO

3. "Better Man"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

I know this is technically a Little Big Town song, but Taylor wrote it, and if she can sing "Babe" then she can sing this. Plus, I need her to bless my ears with an acoustic guitar version again.

UPDATE: Taylor sang this in Nashville, TN

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Taylor already sang a little bit of "Clean" during the Reputation Tour, just because it was raining and she felt like it, but we will only see real justice once it's performed in full on the B-stage.

5. "Last Kiss"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

I know Taylor is in a happy place right now and is therefore pretty much only singing happy songs (except "All Too Well" lol), but I need her to tear my heart out with "Last Kiss" at least once this tour.

6. "The Moment I Knew"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Apparently a fan in the Rep Room asked Taylor to perform this and she said no one would know the words to sing along, and I hate that because "The Moment I Knew" is an underrated classic. She needs to sing it live at least ONCE. Please, Taylor.

7. "Stay Beautiful"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Aside from the snakes, Taylor is all about being happy this era, and "Stay Beautiful" is basically the ultimate happy bop. So I'm gonna need her to sing it!

8. "The Other Side Of The Door"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

We ALL deserve to hear this bridge performed live at least once.

9. "I Know Places"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

I'm sorry, but this song encompasses the whole Rep era like no other, and yet we haven't seen a performance of it yet??? It's about being happily in love with a person and hiding your relationship from the media/the public, which, if you read it backwards, spells REPUTATION .

UPDATE: Taylor sang this in Tokyo, Japan

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Again, we love a cute song about being in love with someone and not caring what anyone thinks about it, and we also love hearing them performed acoustically on the B-stage!

UPDATE: Taylor sang this in Foxborough, MA

11. "Picture To Burn"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

I just want her to do the country accent again.

12. "I Wish You Would"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

This is one of my favourite songs on 1989 so don't come for me. I love it and I want to hear it acoustic, because the lyrics are lowkey sad, and the production kind of masks that.

13. "New Romantics"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

I don't know why she hasn't performed this one yet! It's coming! Watch this space!

14. "The Lucky One"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Again, this song completely encapsulates the message of this era – that Taylor is happier with her private life staying private. Also I just want more Red love.

UPDATE: Taylor sang this in Atlanta, GA

15. "You Are In Love"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

I want a recreation of the 1989 tour, where she got the audience to echo the chorus back to her, because that was beautiful.

16. "Mary's Song (Oh My My My)"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

I think the quality of the above image proves we need an updated performance of this adorable song from Taylor's debut album.

17. "Starlight"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

I dream impossible things and those things are seeing Taylor perform "Starlight" on the Reputation Stadium Tour.

UPDATE: Taylor sang this in Brisbane, Australia

18. "All You Had To Do Was Stay"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

This is one of 1989 's Holy Trinity of Bops (the other two are "I Wish You Would" and "How You Get The Girl", in case you were curious), and I think she needs to honour that.

19. "Cold As You"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Listen, Taylor KNOWS how much we all stan this song. I don't want to bring down her happy vibe, but I need her to sing "Cold As You" so I have an updated version to listen to when I'm in my feelings.

20. "Breathe"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

This song is criminally underrated by Taylor herself. It's time to put that right.

UPDATE: Taylor sang this in Miami, FL

21. "Untouchable"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Imagine everyone's bracelets lit up and sparkling white while Taylor sings this on the B-stage? Iconic.

22. "Wonderland"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

"Wonderland" deserves to be part of the regular setlist for every tour she ever does.

UPDATE: Taylor sang this in Houston, TX

23. "Everything Has Changed"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

All I knew this morning when I woke, was I wanted Taylor to perform "Everything Has Changed" on the B-stage. She doesn't even need to invite Ed Sheeran as a special guest. I'm happy either way.

24. "Come Back... Be Here"

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

I NEED A LIVE PERFORMANCE OF "COME BACK...BE HERE" TAYLOR. PLEASE.

P.S. Here's a handy playlist of all the songs Taylor has performed on the B-stage so far...

Taylor Swift’s ‘Reputation’ Tour: The 10 Best Surprise Moments

  • By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Most stadium concerts have little space for improvisation, especially pop spectaculars that utilize dancers, confetti cannons, video screens and inflatable props. These types of shows are almost always rehearsed down to the smallest detail as if they were Broadway musicals. On Taylor Swift ‘s 2018 Reputation tour, however, she decided to reward her hardcore fans by reserving one slot a night for a surprise acoustic song. It always came on the B stage shortly after “Shake It Off” or “Dancing With Our Hands Tied.”

By the time the tour wrapped last week at the Tokyo Dome, she’d performed nearly every song she’d ever written. No song was too obscure and there was no way of knowing what the surprise selection would be on any given night until she started singing it. Picking the 10 best moments was tough, but we polled a handful of Swift super fans to assemble this list. (Many of these videos are incomplete. Taylor Swift fans either really like making short videos, or YouTube has been asked to take down complete ones.)

“All Too Well” (Glendale, Arizona; May 8th) Swift set the tone for the whole tour on opening night in Glendale, Arizona when she played the fan favorite “All Too Well,” a song that hadn’t been part of a tour since 2014. (It’s also Rob Sheffield’s favorite Taylor Swift song and he happened to be in the crowd that night .) The sad breakup song is almost certainly about the dissolution of her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal, and obsessive fans have even pinpointed the exact scarf she references in it. Many of the surprise acoustic songs on the tour were one-offs, but this one was brought out two more times.

“Change” (Foxborough, Massachusetts; July 27th) Taylor Swift was just starting to write songs for 2008’s Fearless when she began “Change,” which chronicled her rise from obscurity up through that point in her career. She was unable to finish it until she won the Horizon Award at the CMAs in 2007. “I knew I couldn’t finish it until something like that happened,” she said. “It was absolutely the most amazing night of my life, getting to see the emotion of all the people who worked so hard for me.” The song became one of the themes for the 2008 Summer Olympics and was the last number of the main set on her Fearless tour in 2009–10, but she hadn’t touched it since a one-off in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 2013 when it appeared at a Reputation show in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

“Mean” (Dublin, June 15th) Swift sang  “Rhiannon” with Stevie Nicks at the 2010 Grammys and was perhaps a bit off-key. Some critics tore the performance to shreds, most notably industry analyst Bob Lefsetz. “Did Taylor Swift kill her career overnight?” he asked. “Taylor’s too young and dumb to understand the mistake she made. … It’s hard to be a singer if you can’t sing.” She’s never fully admitted it, but it’s almost certain that Swift read that nasty rebuke and wrote “Mean” in response. She had the last laugh when the song hit Number 11 on the Hot 100. The lone performance on the Reputation tour came in Dublin. It was the first time she’d touched it since 2015.

“A Place in This World” (Pittsburgh, August 7th) Taylor reached all the way back to her 2006 debut LP at the Pittsburgh stop of the Reputation tour when she played “A Place in This World.” When she wrote it, she was an unknown teenage singer/songwriter who had just moved to Nashville. “I don’t know what I want, so don’t ask me,” she sings. “Cause I’m still trying to figure it out.” The song was never a single, and until this year in Pittsburgh, Swift hadn’t played it since 2009.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

“Tim McGraw” (Nashville, August 25th) It’s hard to imagine a moment that could make a Nashville audience go crazier than watching the actual Tim McGraw and his wife Faith Hill join Taylor Swift for a surprise performance of “Tim McGraw,” Swift’s debut single from 2006 that she hadn’t played live in any capacity since 2013. She was just a teenage fan of Tim McGraw when she wrote the song, never dreaming that she’d even get to meet him, let alone sing this song with him at a sold-out stadium concert.

“The Best Day” (Santa Clara, California; May 12th) Taylor Swift’s show at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, happened to fall the day before Mother’s Day, so she decided to break out “The Best Day,” a tribute to her mother, Andrea, from 2008’s Fearless . She wrote that song without telling her mother about it, first showing it to her paired with videos from her childhood. “She had no idea that it was me singing for the first half of the song,” she said. “And then she just broke down crying when she realized I had done this whole thing to surprise her. It was a really cool moment.” She’s only performed the song six times, and until this year hadn’t played it since 2013.

“Enchanted” (East Rutherford, New Jersey; July 22nd) When Swift played the opening notes of this song in New Jersey, the woman behind us started screaming so loudly it briefly sounded like someone was trying to murder her. It turned out she was just in a state of uncontrollable shock that Taylor was playing this Speak Now deep cut for the first time since a one-off in 2014. The song was never a single, but it’s a huge fan favorite.

Come for the Torture, Stay for the Poetry: This Might Be Taylor Swift's Most Personal Album Yet

Trump privately rages about his sketch artist, courtroom nap reports, matty healy is taylor swift's unlikely inspiration and six other takeaways from 'ttpd', taylor swift busts out the quill pen and delivers an epic double album with 'ttpd: the anthology'.

“Holy Ground” (Seattle, May 22nd) Like many songs on Red , “Holy Ground” is a look back at a relationship that went sour. But unlike in “All Too Well,” here, Swift reflects on the past with happiness rather than sorrow. “And I guess we fell apart in the usual way,” she sings. “And the story’s got dust on every page.” She played it at a Formula 1 event in 2016, but it hadn’t been part of her show since the Red tour in 2014.

“The Lucky One” (Atlanta, August 11th) Fame was already becoming a major burden for Taylor Swift when she began writing songs for 2012’s Red , and “The Lucky One” is about a pop star who gets sick of the burning spotlight and decides to give it all up for a life of solitude. The song is rumored to be about Joni Mitchell. It was a regular part of the Red tour in 2013/14, but the Atlanta stop on the Reputation tour marked the first time she’d played it since that time.

“I Know Places” (Tokyo, November 20th) The Reputation tour wrapped up with a two-night stand at the Tokyo Dome days before Thanksgiving. By that point she’d done a very large chunk of her entire catalog, but at the penultimate show she broke out “I Know Places” from 1989 for the first time. On the 2015 tour it was an elaborately choreographed number with dancers, but for this one night it was stripped back to its bare essence.

Netflix original [ ]

On December 13, 2018, Taylor thanked everyone for her birthday wishes on Instagram and also announced that there was going to be a tour movie for the Reputation Stadium Tour that would be released on New Year's Eve, titled Taylor Swift: reputation Stadium Tour . It was filmed at the last Dallas/Arlington show, which was the final US leg date. It featured the surprise song " All Too Well ".

Taylor Swift designed her own stage, complete with an elevator, and a rapid changing room for her eight costumes.

The main screen was 110 feet tall and and made of 12 columns and 1,5OO LED tiles that split into 49 individual screens that moved depending on the song. The stage design is an X shape and it also features a B & C Stage that Taylor accessed with the floating constellation and snake gondolas during " Delicate " and the " Bad Blood "/" Should've Said No " mashup. The band played right behind the main screen and during certain parts of the show, the screen opened and the audience could see them.

During " Look What You Made Me Do ", there was a giant inflatable snake named Karyn on the stage as well as smaller inflatable snakes on the B & C Stage and for the show encore, a water fountain was installed on stage. There were also fire, smoke and fireworks effects throughout the show from the stage. The LED bracelets distributed to the attendees were interactive with the songs and stage visuals.

A fresh look at pop culture, all the surprise acoustic songs on taylor swift’s reputation tour (so far) and suggested songs she should play.

Taylor Swift likes to give her fans a little surprise during each concert. The 1989 tour was known for its surprise guests during “Style,” but the reputation tour is known for its surprise acoustic song during each show. Songs That Should Be Added To The Set

“I Almost Do” – Red

While everyone applauds “All Too Well” as Red’s saddest moment, I find “I Almost Do” as the underrated ruby of Red. The sadness of reminiscing about a lost love while also letting it go because it would hurt too much to try again is vulnerable Taylor at her best.

“Breathe” – Fearless (Finally played August 18!)

Many below think this song is about a romantic relationship, its actually about the end of a friendship.  A different territory for Taylor that should be highlighted during her concert.

“Enchanted” – Speak Now (Finally played July 22!)

What I love about this song is the journey that it takes you on. You feel that you are on the date that this song is inspired by, and I’ve always confused about why this song wasn’t a single.

“Everything Has Changed” – Red

The song is meant to be played on a guitar, and I feel like it will fit into the quiet, low key moment that the acoustic set is. Bonus points if she brings Ed Sheeran out for it.

“Hey Stephen”- Fearless (Finally played September 18!)

I always thought this was a adorable song, and I think it would be cute for the audience to sing along with the humming.

Camila Cabello is also a fan of this song, talking to TRL that it is a song that soundtracked her life.

Ahead of her Indy tour stop this year, Taylor Swift releases her eleventh studio album

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

Are you ready for it?

Ahead of her concert later this year in Indy, Taylor Swift released her highly-anticipated eleventh studio album "The Tortured Poets Department" on Friday.

Still no word on "Reputation (Taylor's Version)" though (sorry, Swifties).

Here's what we know about her new album.

When does 'The Tortured Poets Department' release?

Swift's newest album, "The Tortured Poets Department" dropped at midnight on April 19. Then at 2 a.m. she released a deluxe version of the album, "The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology."

How manys songs are in 'The Tortured Poets Department'?

The original album consists of 16 songs, with four additional bonus tracks that were advertised as only available on certain vinyls or CDs. Each vinyl or CD variant includes a different one of the bonus tracks.

Making bonus tracks only available on physical copies and releasing them on streaming later is becoming a more common practice.

Swift did this with her previous album "Midnights" where the bonus track "You're Losing Me" was only available on a few CDs sold at live shows. Olivia Rodrigo recently released a deluxe version of her sophomore album "Guts," which includes all four of the bonus tracks that were originally only available on certain vinyl pressings, plus one new song.

Swift moved much quicker than that for this album.

By releasing the deluxe version of the album on streaming at 2 a.m., only two hours after the original dropped, 15 extra tracks, including the bonus tracks only on vinyl and cd, became available to stream.

So now all bonus tracks for this album are available on streaming, but not all the deluxe songs have physical copies (that we know of, yet).

When did Taylor Swift announce 'The Tortured Poets Department'?

At the Grammy Awards on Feb. 4, while accepting the award for Best Pop Vocal Album for her previous album "Midnights," Swift announced her next project, another album titled "The Tortured Poets Department."

She has been teasing fans with track titles, lyrics, videos , Apple Music playlists , and even a pop-up art installation in Los Angeles with Spotify leading up to the release.

Will 'The Tortured Poets Department' be in the Eras Tour?

It is still unsure whether or not the remaining shows on her current tour, the Eras Tour, will be updated to include songs from her newest album.

She begins the European leg of her tour on May 9 in Paris, France, making it the first concert date after the release of "The Tortured Poets Department." Fans will have to wait and see if the album gets a more permanent spot in the show's setlist beyond being played during the surprise song segment.

When is Taylor Swift coming to Indy?

Taylor Swift announced in August she is bringing her "Eras Tour" to Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium for three nights, Nov. 1, 2 and 3.

Taylor Swift Indianapolis: ‘Stay Stay Stay’ at one of these hotels within a mile of the Eras Tour concert

How to get Taylor Swift tickets for Indianapolis?

You may still have a chance to see the Eras Tour in November.

Ticket sales through Ticketmaster are officially over, however, several marked-up tickets are still available for the Indianapolis shows on re-selling sites like StubHub and SeatGeek .

If you're still hoping to get tickets, they may be costly. Most tickets are priced are anywhere from $1,500 to almost $3,000 each, and the cheapest tickets are for seats near the top of the bowl.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift ‘s Eras Tour set list features a surprise song (or two), so far performed during a mini acoustic set, on each date of the the superstar’s trek, which kicked off in March 2023.

Guitar in hand and making her way to the end of the stage’s catwalk at March 17’s Eras kickoff in Glendale, Ariz., Swift revealed her intentions for the acoustic portion of her long-awaited live show. She’ll perform a surprise song that will not be played again on this tour — probably.

“The plan, the goal, would be to play different songs every single night and never repeat one. Right? So that when you heard one on this tour, you would know it’s the only time that I was going to play it in the acoustic set, unless — caveat — unless I mess it up so badly,” she said with a small laugh, “that I have to do it over again in some other city. Send your best wishes towards me that I don’t do that.”

Here Are All the Celebrities Who Have Attended Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour

The Eras Tour is her first real tour in five years, and the first time the prolific songwriter is getting to perform selections from Lover , Folklore , Evermore and Midnights to sold-out stadium crowds.

Eras Tour night one introduced a career-spanning, whopping 44-song setlist with a runtime of more than three hours, with Swift playing anywhere from one to eight tracks from all 10 of her full-length studio albums. The show’s nightly surprise is sure to keep her fans on their tallest tiptoes, waiting to hear what gem will be unveiled at their concert.

Below, check out the list of all the surprise songs she’s brought to The Eras Tour, courtesy of social media livestreams and post-concert clips uploaded by Swifties in attendance. Bookmark this page, as the list will updated regularly as the tour goes on.

"Mirrorball"

Taylor Swift Mirrorball Eras Tour

Performed at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona (March 17, 2023)

“I was thinking about the first one I would play for you,” Swift said at the very first Eras Tour concert, to a crowd of fans who were still gloriously spoiler-free about what was in store for the rest of the show. “I was thinking about what song to play first, and I was thinking about how one of the songs that I wrote with you in mind during the pandemic was one of the first songs I wrote for Folklore , and it was me writing about how badly I craved the connection that I feel from the care that you have directed in my way. I’m trying to tell you I love you, and I’m babbling,” she noted. Swift tried again: “I was trying to think of sort of an eloquent way to say that I love you and I need your attention all the time, and I came up with ‘I’m a mirrorball.'” After the wordy intro, Swift begins singing “Mirrorball” at the 2:17 timestamp in the video above.

"Tim McGraw"

Taylor Swift

“I was thinking about tonight and how special this is,” Swift explained on the opening night of The Eras Tour, and then added, “So I thought it might be kind of fun to play the very first song I ever put out.” The crowd gladly sang along to her pretty piano rendition of her debut single, nearly 17 years after it was first released. “Tim McGraw” was the only track from her first album to make the Eras setlist in Arizona.

"This Is Me Trying"

Taylor Swift This Is Me Trying Eras Tour

Performed at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona (March 18, 2023)

“I keep forgetting what key it’s in — one second. It’s lost all concept to me,” Swift joked before launching into the emotional Folklore track as the first of two surprise songs, at the second show of The Eras Tour.

"State of Grace"

Taylor Swift State of Grace Eras Tour

Swift brought the Red album opener down to its roots as a piano ballad in Glendale. Her delicate vocals were echoed by a stadium of thousands joining in, making for a chilling moment of connection between a singer-songwriter and her fans.

Performed at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas (March 24, 2023)

“I do get ideas from places. I actually saw an interview that Beabadoobee did — who is our amazing, brilliant opening act tonight — and they were saying, ‘Oh, you’re going on The Eras Tour. What song might you want to hear?’ And she was like, ‘I grew up listening to songs on her first album.’ And she named a specific song. So I figured, you know what, for her first show with us, I’ll play the specific song that she said she would want to hear. So this is a song I wrote for my ninth-grade talent show. It’s called ‘Our Song.’”

"Snow on the Beach"

“Lana Del Rey put out a new album. It’s called Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd. Guys, it’s so good. You probably already know that, but it’s just extraordinary. I just think she’s the best that we have. I think we need to make it a priority as a group to stream, buy, support this album and this artist. She knows I’m obsessed with her, and she was kind enough to make a song with me on Midnights called ‘Snow on the Beach’ because she’s a generous king. She did that for me, and I’ll never forget how nice she’s been to me. It’s so cool when you have favorite artists and they turn out to be so nice to you. I wanted to just do some promo for her, and also, in honor of this brilliant album that she just put out, I wanted to play ‘Snow on the Beach.’”

"Cowboy Like Me" (with Marcus Mumford)

Performed at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas (March 25, 2023)

“Las Vegas, Nevada, you are so lucky, because we do have a special guest with us tonight,” Swift told the sold-out crowd when introducing Mumford & Sons frontman Marcus Mumford. “Would you sing ‘Cowboy Like Me’ with me?” The duo paired up for the 2020 Evermore duet.

“Sad Beautiful Tragic”

Performed at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas (March 31, 2023)

Swift worked in “Sad Beautiful Tragic” from Red to the setlist during her acoustic portion of the Arlington show. Strumming it on just an acoustic guitar, she introduced the song saying, “I love this one. When I love a song, I don’t care what anyone says.”

Performed at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. (April 14, 2023)

"Mad Woman"

Performed at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. (April 15, 2023)

“I have a really, really, really wonderful, incredible person in my life who I’ve been making music with,” Swift said, bringing Aaron Dessner out on her stage for a second time this tour and joining him at the piano bench. “…We wrote this song that I really love because it allowed me to get a lot off my chest, and now we’re gonna sing it for you — ’cause who doesn’t love a mad woman?”

Going way back to her very early songwriting days, Swift introduced “A Place in This World” as a song she penned around the age of 13 — noting that she might relate to its lyrics even more 20 years later.

"Today Was a Fairytale"

“You make every day on this tour feel like a fairytale,” Swift told her fans before performing the song, originally featured on the soundtrack for the 2010 film Valentine’s Day , on piano. (At the second of three Houston shows, she admitted that The Eras Tour has basically become her “entire personality.”)

"Cold as You"

“No shade to the other songs on the album,” Swift joked, expressing an utmost love for the emotional ballad from her debut album, which she played at the piano for the night three Houston audience. “Cold as You” immediately trended on Twitter while she sang the song live on tour for the first time in a decade.

Performed at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia (April 28, 2023)

“This is one of my favorite moments in the show because it kind of keeps me on my toes,” Swift said to a wild crowd in Atlanta.

“When I was rerecording my album Fearless , I looked back and I was listening to this one … I remember when I wrote this one I was so obsessed with this sort of, like, rant I put at the end of the song,” she said, hinting at the deep cut that was to come. “And I never, I don’t think I really got to perform it live. If I ever I ever did, it was not enough times, so I’d really love to play the song. It’s called ‘The Other Side of the Door.'”

"Coney Island"

A pretty long speech came before the first-ever solo (and first-ever at all) live performance of the heart-wrenching Evermore highlight, originally a duet with with Matt Berninger.

“Any time I’m gonna talk about or even reference another artist, I feel inclined to tell you that if they’re not here, they’re not here,” she warned the crowd. “No one else is here. You are stuck with me. It’s only me. But I am gonna talk about another artist. I just feel like, you know, stadiums are huge and it’s important to really communicate, so that’s what I’m doing. I’m gonna talk about another artist who has an album that just came out that is so incredible. The National just had an album come out. This band has influenced me beyond my ability to verbalize how much they’ve influenced me — just lyrically, their ability to set a scene, their ability to tell a story. And obviously, Aaron Dessner is in The National and he has completely changed my life. I was lucky enough to be able to write a song with them for their new album, which is called the First Two Pages of Frankenstein . Check it out, stream it, buy it on vinyl. I love them so much. They’ve been so kind to me. So, I’m not gonna sing the song that we have on this new album — it’s called ‘The Alcott’ — check that out, though. But I am gonna sing ‘Coney Island.'”

“Rather than me speaking about it,” she said with a grin, “I thought I would just show you — If you would direct your attention to the back screen.” The screen announced that Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) will be released on July 7, and Swift then launched into the album track “Sparks Fly” on acoustic guitar.

Swift welcomed “kind, wonderful genius” Aaron Dessner to the stage on a stormy night in Nashville to join her on the surprise song from the 3AM version of Midnights . “He was warned about the rain, and he did accept the challenge anyway,” she said.

“Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve” was “one of our favorites when we made it,” Swift noted.

She described how “it’s crazy” to go back and listen to songs that at the time were rooted in “fantasy” but at her age now are relatable, and then introduced the Speak Now track that was coming next: “This is called ‘Mine,'” Swift said.

"The Best Day"

Tears had to have been aplenty throughout the stadium on Mother’s Day as Swift told the story of “The Best Day” and performed it on piano.

“I secretly recorded a song on Fearless ,” she told the crowd, recalling being 16 or 17 at the time and explaining that it was very tricky to get this project done without her mother knowing. “It was very sneaky and fun,” she said.

“I wrote this song just compiling these sort of core childhood memories I had of not just her as a mother but her as a friend,” Swift said. After playing the sweet song for her mom for the first time, while showing her the video of personal family footage set to the track that she edited together herself, she asked her mom, “Did you like the song?” “It’s such a beautiful song. Where did you find it? It sounds exactly like the things we went through” Mom replied, not even comprehending that her own daughter would write a song about the two of them. “I wrote it and recorded it secretly,” Taylor told her. “It is our memories. That’s about us.” Needless to say, there were plenty of tears that day, too.

Before giving this Midnights track its live debut, Swift got candid with fans about how her life’s going behind the scenes.

“I kind of just feel like telling you … I’ve just never been this happy in my life, in all aspects of my life, ever,” she gushed. “And I just want to thank you for being a part of that. For the first time in Eras Tour history, Swift performed both surprise songs on guitar. That’s because her piano took on a life of its own after getting damaged by rain during the show the night prior, causing Swift to last-minute switch over to guitar for “Red.”

“Literally, it was like a water park under the stage,” she recalled to fans at the May 21 show. “This has clearly broken my keyboard. It was literally underwater — I don’t know how any of the instruments were working last night.”

The pick was “Getaway Car,” a beloved fan fave, and for the song, frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff joined her on stage. “He’s been one of my best friends — he feels like a family member,” Swift said while welcoming “Jersey’s own” Antonoff. In addition to singing lead on a few lines, Antonoff aided Swift with some forceful acoustic strumming on the Reputation highlight.

Midnights is the most recent album to drop before Taylor’s Eras Tour, so it’s no surprise that it takes up a good portion of the setlist. Even so, the standard Eras Tour setlist doesn’t include one of the album’s absolute best songs — but the evening’s night’s crowd was in for a treat. “This is one of my favorites off Midnights , but I haven’t played it yet,” Swift said, before performing a gorgeous rendition of “Maroon” while seated at an upright piano festooned with a floral design.

Swift prefaced her “Dear John” performance by encouraging fans to show “kindness and gentleness” on the internet ahead of her  Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)  album release on July 7.

“I’m 33 years old. I don’t care about anything that happened to me when I was 19,” she said when introducing the 2010 ballad, about a toxic relationship with an older man, widely assumed to be the singer’s ex-boyfriend  John Mayer .

“I’m not putting this album out so that you can go and should feel the need to defend me on the internet against someone you think I might have written a song about 14 billion years ago.”

“Dear John” appears on Swift’s third album,  Speak Now . The track peaked at No. 54 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2010.

"I'm Only Me When I'm With You"

Performed at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio (June 30, 2023)

“I’m gonna play a song now that I wrote when I was 13,” Swift told the excited crowd. “I wrote this before I even thought I would ever have a first album. It’s kind of like the self-titled/debut era representation of the evening.”

She added that this moment was kind of the “middle school era” for her, and said, “This just takes me back. It makes me so grateful to be with you here tonight. Ummm… it’s called ‘I’m Only Me When I’m With You.'”

The songstress gifted her audience with a heart-wrenching solo performance of her Evermore title track. The album version features Bon Iver; in his absence, Swift took over his vocal section for the live debut of “Evermore.”

"I Miss You, I'm Sorry" With Gracie Abrams

“I am gonna do a thing that I really, really, really wanna do right now” Swift told the crowd, and revealed that for the first time on The Eras Tour, she’d be playing three songs during her acoustic set.

She welcomed Gracie Abrams to the stage. The pair shared a hug and vocals on Abrams’ “I Miss You, I’m Sorry,” with Swift on guitar and Abrams on piano.

"Right Where You Left Me"

Performed at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. (July 28, 2023)

Swift teamed up with her frequent collaborator  Aaron Dessner  for the first live performance of “Right Where You Left Me” in Santa Clara, Calif., on July 28. Prior to the performance, Swift warned concert-goers that it was one of her more challenging songs to play live.

“Because it’s one of our favorites, there’s more pressure on it,” Swift  told  the crowd. “Also, this is one of the wordiest songs. I have been rehearsing this for weeks, OK? And I’ve never, ever gotten it 100% right. Not even one time. If this is the time that I get it right, you have no idea what kind of celebration I’m going to be exhibiting after that. And also, this goes for you. If you can get all the words right to this song, you get to pat yourself on the back. You win an imaginary prize. It’s yours. We love this song and I hope that I somewhat do it justice.”

As expected, the songstress goofed up the lyrics before laughing it off and starting again where they left off. “It was too good to be true!” she said. “I knew that I would f— that up! We really can’t let that be it, so now we’ve got to go back.”

When Swift played the opening chords of “Exile” from 2020’s  Folklore  for the second surprise song, the crowd cheered wildly and started searching the stage for her duet partner  Bon Iver . After all, the only other time Swift has performed the song live is alongside Justin Vernon when she  popped up during a Bon Iver concert in London  last year. But the singer/songwriter ended up performing the duet solo instead on Monday night – which made for an incredible communal experience when the crowd filled in for Vernon on the bridge, creating a powerful call-and-response between Swift and her ever-prepared fans.

Will Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras Tour’ Setlist Change After ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ Release?

Will Taylor Swift s Eras Tour Setlist Change After The Tortured Poets Department Release 001

Taylor Swift ’s The Tortured Poets Department has already captivated the world , leaving her fans to wonder whether any of the new songs will pop up on her Eras Tour setlist.

Swift, 34, kicked off her three-hour concert series in March 2023 in Arizona, soon traversing the United States, Central and South America, Asia and Australia. The shows highlight most of her past albums: Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, Reputation, Folklore, Evermore and Midnights . There also is a section dedicated to “surprise songs,” where Swift adds two new acoustic renditions (most recently, mash-ups) to the show.

Swift has been on hiatus since early March, weeks before The Tortured Poets Department dropped on Friday, April 19. The record, her 11th studio album, features 31 songs including “Fortnight,” “So Long, London,” “Fresh Out the Slammer,” “So High School” and “thanK you aIMee.”

Swift’s fans planning to see Eras later this year — the tour leg kicks off in Paris on Thursday, May 9 — have since taken to social media, curious if they will be able to hear any TTPD live.

“OK listen I NEED Taylor to add ‘I Can Do It With a Broken Heart’ to the Eras Tour setlist. … Just that ONE. … PLEASE. … It was MADE for the Eras Tour !!!!!!!!!!” a social media user wrote via X.

Another added, “I am so obsessed with Taylor’s new album idk how to survive the Eras Tour (if I actually go twice I might just drop dead afterwards).”

Will Taylor Swift s Eras Tour Setlist Change After The Tortured Poets Department Release 002

Since Eras has sections dedicated to Swift’s previous albums , it is possible that TTPD could get its own mini-set in the lineup. Not all of her preexisting cohorts feature the same amount of songs, so Swift could cut some songs in order to add a time for Tortured Poets additions .

Spotify added further fuel to the fire on Friday as Swifties noticed the streaming platform’s official video for “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” a TTPD track, features footage solely from the Eras Tour.

Swift’s musical director David Cook , who has also been featured on several of her past LPs, also hinted that TTPD songs could make an appearance on the tour lineup.

“Not sure how much I can add to the discourse other than this album is really REALLY good. You FEEL it,” Cook wrote via Instagram on Friday, quoting “Loml” with a mind-blown emoji.

According to eagle-eyed Swifties that captured screenshots, Cook also wrote, “Wait until you hear the live versions.” The addition, however, has since been deleted.

Of course, it is also possible that Swift will drop a TTPD single in her surprise song section.

“How will The Tortured Poets Department affect the Eras Tour ? Hopefully only on surprise songs (in a good way),” an X user theorized.

While Swift has yet to address if TTPD will affect her Eras Tour setlist, she’s given fans insight into how she picks song s for the acoustic section.

“This has become my favorite part of the show because it’s become very chaotic and it’s become a challenge for me to think of new things to do for every single city,” Swift told the crowd in Singapore in March. “And hope that I’m doing something that you guys might like. It’s been a blast!”

Per the Grammy winner, she “invented [her] crazy acoustic section,” to be able to play “as many songs” as she could way over the 44 staples at each show. Adding TTPD tracks there seems like an easy way to do just that, if you ask Us.

The Tortured Poets Department is out now and Swift’s Eras Tour resumes on Thursday, May 9.

All Of Taylor Swift's Best Surprise Songs On The Eras Tour

Posted: April 19, 2024 | Last updated: April 19, 2024

Days after it was revealed that Swift had broken up with Joe Alwyn, the singer performed “Death By A Thousand Cuts” and “Clean” as the surprise songs on her stop in Arlington, Texas. Both are about breakups and fans speculated that she performed them whilst she was grieving over her six-year relationship.

“Death By A Thousand Cuts” and “Clean”

She didn’t bring out collaborator Colbie Caillat for “Breathe” but she still managed to sing the song for her fans in Detroit, Michigan June 10, 2023. Another surprise was a guitar version of the severely underrated “1989” song “All You Had To Do Was Stay”.

“All You Had To Do Was Stay” and “Breathe”

Swift invited her trusted collaborator and New Jersey native Jack Antonoff, to join her on stage during her East Rutherford, New Jersey show. Together, they performed a "Reputation," fan favorite: "Getaway Car." Swift acknowledged the fans' desire to hear this particular song and fulfilled their wish. During the performance, Swift and Antonoff acknowledged the delightful behind-the-scenes video of them writing "Getaway Car" by pausing before the breakdown and engaging in a call and response with each other. She doubled down on giving fans everything they wanted by singing her pop-ballad "Maroon" next.

“Getaway Car” and “Maroon”

If a piano rendition of “Dorothea” didn’t bring you to tears at Swift’s GEHA Field show at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Swift made sure “the saddest song she’s ever written” aka “Last Kiss” would do the trick. The “Speak Now” song’s inclusion as the surprise song that day was particularly telling as it features a lyric referencing July 9 and the concert took place on July 8.

“Dorothea” and “Last Kiss”

Before performing "Hits Different," her most recent song, Swift teased, "I don't know if you'll know this one, it's kinda new, but we'll see." Previously available only on Target CDs, "Hits Different" was made available for streaming the week prior on “Midnights (The Til Dawn Edition)”, along with the divisive "Karma" remix featuring Bronx rapper Ice Spice. Swift next sang "The Moment I Knew," one of her well-known love-loss ballads. The song has been linked to former flame Jake Gyllenhaal and references him skipping her birthday party.

“Hits Different” and “The Moment I Knew”

Lena Dunham, a longtime friend of Swift and a writer, came to the performance on her birthday, and Swift played her request, "Forever & Always," to commemorate the occasion. She played the song on the guitar because it was the first surprise tune, which confused some devotees of the beloved piano rendition of the “Fearless” smash. She performed "This Love," one of the two 1989 songs she has already re-recorded and published, on the piano. It’s unclear if a piano version of the track will be featured on the “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” record but here’s hoping.

“Forever & Always” and “This Love”

One of the most surprising songs to make the Eras Tour was “I Don’t Want To Live Forever”, a song performed by Taylor Swift and ZAYN for the “Fifty Shades Darker” movie. The song hasn’t really been sung live too much by either artist after its debut, so the song being performed live at the Soldier Field, Chicago concert was shocking, to say the least. While Swift didn’t bring out ZAYN for the show, she did invite country music superstar Marren Morris on stage for a “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” track “You All Over Me”.

“I Don’t Want To Live Forever” and “You All Over Me”

The singer performed her debut album deep cut “Invisible” and “Midnights” track “Question…?” during her show at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Speaking to her fans that night, she professed “I want you all to know that I've never been this happy before in my life... It is not just with the tour, I just feel like for the first time my life finally feels like it makes sense, so I'm going to play this song that brings me a lot of happy memories."

"Invisible" and "Question...?"

“Lover” track “Daylight” had its moment to shine when Taylor Swift sang it during her stop in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She then sang “Dear John”, a “Speak Now” classic she hadn’t sung for 11 years. Before she sang the song about her ex John Mayer, she stated: “I’m 33 years old. I don’t care about anything that happened to me when I was 19 except the songs I wrote. So what I’m trying to tell you that I’m not putting this album out so you should feel the need to defend me on the internet against someone you think I might have written a song about 14 billion years ago.”

“Dear John” and “Daylight”

Taylor Swift’s show in Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida was made all the more special when she sang fan favorite “You’re On Your Own Kid”. Swift referenced the struggles her fans had gone through to get tickets for her tour before she brought out co-writer Aaron Dessner for a performance of “Midnights (3AM Edition)” track “The Great War”. The singer called Dessner the "collaborator version of a soulmate.” This was also the live debut of the song.

Taylor Swift shocker: New album, "The Tortured Poets Department," is actually a double album

By Alex Sundby , Brian Dakss

Updated on: April 19, 2024 / 10:28 PM EDT / CBS News

Anticipation was growing at a fever pitch before Taylor Swift's latest album, " The Tortured Poets Department ," dropped at midnight EDT. But the pop superstar had a huge surprise on tap: It's actually a double album.

When Part One dropped, Swift wrote on Instagram , "All's fair in love and poetry... New album THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. Out now 🤍"

Then came the shocker, revealed in an Instagram post saying , "It's a 2am surprise: The Tortured Poets Department is a secret DOUBLE album. ✌️ I'd written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you, so here's the second installment of TTPD: The Anthology. 15 extra songs. And now the story isn't mine anymore… it's all yours. 🤍."

What's Taylor Swift's new album about?

Swift described the album as "new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time — one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure."

She also said that time has been "closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted."

"Entertainment Tonight" correspondent Denny Directo called the record some of her most vulnerable work.

"Fans were left with more questions than there were answers, so good luck trying to decipher who these songs are about, what they mean," Directo told CBS News. "… I feel like there's more heartbreak songs on this than there are love songs."

Hours ahead of the record's release, Swift said on social media that its first single was "Fortnight," featuring Post Malone, and its music video was released Friday night .

Swift praised the Grammy-nominated artist's musical experimentation and melodies "that just stick in your head forever."

"I got to witness that magic come to life firsthand when we worked together on Fortnight," Swift said in her post .

"Fortnight" isn't the only track on the album on which Swift worked with another artist. Florence and The Machine is also featured.

What's on "The Tortured Poets Department" tracklist?

Swift posted an initial tracklist to social media in February one day after she announced the album at  the Grammys , where she won for best pop vocal album. Here's the list of all 31 songs:

  • "Fortnight"
  • "The Tortured Poets Department"

Will Taylor Swift add 'Tortured Poets' to international Eras Tour? Our picks.

reputation tour indianapolis surprise songs

A double album. Thirty one songs. Two hours and two minutes. In the spaces between the international, record- breaking Eras Tour, Taylor Swift released her 11th era: "The Tortured Poets Department." But will the behemoth tour make room for the newest addition to Swift's vast catalog and how?

"The Tortured Poets Department" showcases the singer's mastery to connect words like puzzle pieces seamlessly depicting the human experience and complex themes of false wedding promises, relationship imprisonment, break-ups and drug escapism, religion versus rebellion, childhood retrospection and the duality of internally suffering while externally performing. It would be a surprise for her not to push this body of art into the spotlight.

But how it fits into the 44-song three hour and 15-minute Eras tour is anyone's guess. And we won't find out until she resumes the tour on May 9 in Paris. I'll be there.

Read Melissa Ruggieri's review Taylor Swift's 'Tortured Poets' is hauntingly brilliant, even the 15 surprise songs

Whether or not she's incorporating the era has already been decided. Swift is 13 steps ahead . She plans her moves years in advance. There is a two-month break from the tour and she has been spending time in Los Angeles. Her team of dancers have not been as active on social media possibly because they're rehearsing a new set. Or maybe it's a coincidence?

The simplest path would be to absorb some of the the 31 songs into the acoustic set that comes after "Bad Blood" during the "1989" era. Swift has used the 2024 surprise songs to play mash-ups on the guitar and the piano. It's when she makes announcements and it's a custom gift to concertgoers and fans watch in envy on livestreams from around the world.

'Tortured Poets' release live updates What to know as Taylor Swift's new album debuts

More likely, she will add a "Tortured Poets" set. The show is segmented, allowing a new era to squeeze in. She could open the show with the new era, although "Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince's" opening line is a perfect opening for an artist who has released seven albums and hasn't seen fans: "It's been a long time coming." She could end the show with the set, but "Karma" is a good show closer.

Cue the confetti. If she ends the tour with "Tortured Poets," I'm guessing "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart" is the closer.

The writing shines bright like Swift's glittering sequin stars which is reminiscent of and relative to "Folklore" and "Evermore." For the flow of the concert, it makes more sense to not place "Tortured Poets" next to these albums. The show flows with a narrative that spans almost two decades with highs and lows of energy. Two areas that could be good: after "Reputation" and before "Speak Now" or after the secret songs and before "Midnights." Maybe she dives into the stage to swim to the an asylum of typewriters and tormented thoughts.

The four eras with the most amount of songs are the latest records she owned that aren't re-records: "Lover" (six songs), "Folklore" (seven songs), "Evermore" (five songs) and "Midnights" (seven songs). Will she follow that flow? Will she cut songs from these eras?

I could see her performing the lead single "Fortnight," title track "The Tortured Poets Department," Eras Tour song "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart," "Down Bad," "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me," "thanK you aIMee" and "So High School."

Swift holds the answer key. Sixty-nine shows are left on the recording shattering magnum opus for 2024.

Which New Taylor Swift Songs Are About Matty Healy, Joe Alwyn or Travis Kelce? Breaking Down ‘Tortured Poets Department’ Lyric Clues

Matty Healy Taylor Swift Joe Alwyn

Taylor Swift ‘s fans are always poring over her lyrics for clues about her personal life, and things are no different with the release of her newest album, “ The Tortured Poets Department .” Before her world-famous relationship with Travis Kelce that debuted last year, Swift had a long-term romance with British actor Joe Alwyn , and then a relatively short rebound with Matty Healy , frontman of the 1975.

Popular on Variety

1) Fortnight Who we think it’s about: A love-related song, but not necessarily about either Joe or Matty The evidence: This is one of the few songs on “Tortured Poets Department” that seems fairly vague in its reference points. Swift sings about an affair that only lasted for 14 days, if we take the title literally, though if it’s more symbolic, it could refer to the relative brevity of her known time being involved with Healy. However, the lyrics are largely concerned with the difficulties of staying friends with someone after a breakup, and even politely sharing mutual family time. The other songs indicate she is estranged from Alwyn and Healy, and that those were not especially amicable splits. It recalls the 2020 song “Invisible String,” in which Swift seemed to sing about another Joe — Joe Jonas — and said, “Cold was the steel of my axe to grind / For the boys who broke my heart / Now I send their babies presents.” But “Fortnight” seems to present a less settled flip side of the still-pals scenario. 2) The Tortured Poets Department Who we think it’s about: Being smitten with Matty The evidence: Taylor’s ode to chaotic love between two modern poets is one of her most vulnerable moments on the record, seeming to refer to Matty’s notorious ability to be “in self-sabotage mode / Throwing spikes down on the road.” The reference points in this one come fast and furious, starting with the reference in the opening verse to the subject’s love of typewriters, which she finds curious — and Healy is on record as naming the typewriter on a list of things he couldn’t do without, along with sometimes sending 1975 fans typewritten messages. “We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist” is also close to a seeming dead giveaway, as there seems to be something of a mutual admiration society between Healy and Puth. The latter artist covered a 1975 song during a BBC session in the 2010s, and then Healy later expressed his love of at least two different Puth songs. “Thank u Matty!” Puth tweeted in 2018, in response to a bit of praise from Healy. 3) My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys Who we think it’s about: Breaking up with Matty The evidence: Although this song is not as thick with specific references, it’s part of the throughline of numbers on the album that has to do with feeling discarded by a fickle lover. More pointedly, the “this time” in the line “There was a litany of reasons why we could’ve played for keeps this time” suggests that this was not the first time for these particular lovers… and Swift and Healy were believed to have spent time together in the mid-2010s, at least flirting, if not necessarily entering into any serious relationship at that time. 4) Down Bad Who we think it’s about: Breaking up with Matty The evidence: “How dare you think it’s romantic / Leaving me safe and stranded” indicates that the narrator in this song did not instigate the split, and is having a difficult time moving past it, which fits with what is believed to be the Healy scenario. Also, “They’ll say I’m nuts if I talk about the existence of you” could reflect the idea that the world didn’t know that the affair was such an emotionally intense one, as the commonly held wisdom at the time of the Healy relationship was that this might be more of a casual rebound hookup than the deeply-in-love situation this album would seem to indicate. 5) So Long, London Who we think it’s about: Breaking up with Joe The evidence: A no-brainer: This one is a sad sequel to “London Boy.” The title alone points to her cutting off her ties with England, aka her longtime British boyfriend Joe. The length of the relationship seems hinted at by lyrics such as “I’m pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free” and “You say I abandoned the ship, but I was going down with it / My white knuckle dying grip holding tight to your quiet resentment,” signaling the slow death of a relationship versus the apparently brief and passionate whirlwind with Matty. Perhaps the most obvious reference, as metaphors go, is “I stopped CPR, after all it’s no use / The spirit was gone, we would never come to” — a callback to the earlier song “You’re Losing Me,” which used cardiac-patient metaphors in what was clearly understood as a song about the fading of that longtime relationship. 6) But Daddy I Love Him Who we think it’s about: Being smitten with Matty The evidence: The most celebratory song on the album is about relishing in the idea of taking up with a “wild boy” who brings “chaos and revelry,” and dealing with the public disapproval of that — it comes off as a moment frozen in history, however badly things went later. “Scandal does funny things to pride, but brings lovers closer,” she sings, indicating that disapproving scorn only made an affair heat up more. She sends a message to everyone who was sending her messages to ditch the bad boy: “I don’t cater to all these vipers dressed in empath’s clothing / God save the most judgmental creeps who say they want what’s best for me / Sanctimoniously performing soliloquies I’ll never see / Thinking it can change the beat of my heart.”

Who we think it’s about: Being Taylor Swift, scary superstar The evidence: No romance in the equation in this outlier of a song. This is more along the lines of a callback to her “Reputation” period, when she was on the defense against the slings and arrows of much of the public, although those songs referenced the Kim and Kanye scandal, and this song is vaguer about what might have prompted Swift to feel under attack — except maybe for the fact that, even as America’s Sweetheart now, she still gets millions of contrarian haters. “Is it a wonder I broke? / Let’s hear one more joke / Then we could all just laugh until I cry,” she sings. First comparing herself to a circus freak, then to a feared town witch, she offers: “I want to snarl and show you just how disturbed this has made me / You wouldn’t last an hour in the asylum where they raised me.” The most obvious previous point of reference here: “Folklore’s” “Mad Woman,” to which this feels like a close cousin. 11) I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can) Who we think it’s about: Being defensive about, and then having an epiphany about, Matty The evidence: “The jokes that he told across the bar were revolting and far too loud” comes off as a direct reference to Healy’s propensity for getting himself in big trouble with his irreverent (to put it mildly) sense of humor. In particular, his appearance on “The Adam Friedland Show” was considered so risible that it alone convinced many Swifties that he was not the guy for her. In this somewhat light-hearted but pointed song, she acknowledges the scandal of being with him — “They shake their heads saying, ‘God help her’ when I tell ‘em he’s my man” — and indicates she believes she can put him on the righteous path, before concluding, at the finish, “Whoa, maybe I can’t.” 12) LOML Who we think it’s about: Falling in love with, then breaking up with, Matty The evidence: This song is rife with references to how there was some kind of possibility for romance in a previous era, but the narrator set it aside at the time in favor of going with a partner who brought stability: “I thought I was better safe than starry-eyed.” Making good on that old flirtation seemed to be headed toward a happy ending: “Who’s gonna stop us from waltzing back into rekindled flames if we know the steps anyway / We embroidered the memories of the time I was away stitching ‘we were just kids, babe’ / I said ‘I don’t mind. It takes time.'” But things go deeply south in the second half of the song, as she laments falling for the sweet talk of “Mr. Steal Your Girl, then make her cry,” and “love of my life” becomes “loss of my life.” A conclusion about the belated rekindlement: “Should’ve let it stay buried.” 13) I Can Do It With a Broken Heart Who we think it’s about: Taylor Swift as a boss… with breaking up with Matty as a sidebar The evidence: A song about being able to pull through doing the Eras Tour every night while mourning a breakup: “Lights camera bitch smile / Even when you want to die / He said he’d love me all his life.” There’s a reference to the fact that the general public didn’t know the magnitude of the love that was experienced: “I can hold my breath / I’ve been doing it since he left / I keep finding his things in drawers / Crucial evidence I didn’t imagine the whole thing.” But this is a song about her indomitability, not about her mourning: “I’m miserable, and nobody even knows!” is a point of pride. 14) The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived Who we think it’s about: Breaking up with Matty The evidence: The bitterest song on the album. “I don’t even want you back, I just want to know / If rusting my sparkling summer was the goal” seemingly refers to how the guy in question ruined, at least in the short term, what should have been a personally triumphant moment — i.e., the Eras Tour. There are drug references that will cause a lot of speculation: “You tried to buy some pills from a friend of friends of mine / They just ghosted you / Now you know what it feels like,” and “In public, showed me off / Then sank in stoned oblivion.” 15) The Alchemy Who we think it’s about: Being in love with Travis The evidence: Although her current love doesn’t seem to figure much into this album, which was seemingly largely written beforehand, “The Alchemy” has so many sports references that it’s impossible to interpret this as anything but a late-breaking update on current bliss. “Shirts off and your friends lift you up over their heads / Beer sticking to the floor / Cheers chanted cause they said there was no chance / Trying to be the greatest in the league / Where’s the trophy? / He just comes running over to me.” There’s an allusion to the fact that other recent loves were British: “Those blokes warm the benches.” There may also be a pointed reference to a previous love’s drug habits when Swift sings, “He jokes that it’s heroin but this time with an ‘E’.” 16) Clara Bow Who we think it’s about: Taylor Swift — as an archetype, not the reality The evidence: It doesn’t hurt that Swift name-checks herself in the final verse. The first two verses start with call-outs to silent film star Clara Bow and Stevie Nicks, and in all three instances, the verses “quote” an admirer who wants these figures to “promise to be dazzling”… or else, with the implication that they could be replaced. A new up-and-comer is told in the final verse: “You look like Taylor Swift / In this light / We’re loving it / You’ve got edge / She never did.” If it calls back to anything, it’s probably the duet Swift did with Phoebe Bridgers, “Nothing New,” in which she imagined being replaced by a popular successor. The Manuscript (Bonus Track)

Who we think it’s about: A love-related song, subject indeterminate The evidence: This clearly isn’t about any recent love, and may or may not be related to personal experiences. The narrator is looking back on a youthful affair with a much older man — which could be a reference to the age difference with Jake Gyllenhaal back in the day, although any parallels there aren’t obvious, as she refers to going back to dating boys her age, with dartboards on the backs of their doors. The issue is also raised as to whether the relationship was morally inappropriate, which almost feels like it refers to a professor/student relationship rather than two celebrities of different ages. Instinctively, this feels more like a “Folklore”-style bit of fiction, though as ever, attentive fans could yet turn up the clue that makes this turn out to be autobiographical.

The Black Dog (Bonus Track)

Who we think it’s about: Breaking up with Matty The evidence: The key here is probably the repeated references to the band the Starting Line. Healy was such a fan of the Starting Line that he covered one of their songs, “The Best of Me.” The intriguing first verse posits a scenario in which her recent ex has forgotten to turn off his location tracking, and so she sees him entering a bar called the Black Dog. As fans have pointed out, there’s Black Dog Tavern in Martha’s Vineyard, and also a heavy metal bar called the Black Dog in Paris, among others with that name, so it’s tougher for fans to exactly geo-locate this location than it is for Swift.

thanK you aIMee (Bonus Track)

Who we think it’s about: Kim Kardashian … with a protective bit of Mama Swift The evidence: No major points for subtlety here, as Swift has gone back to the trick from her early lyric sheets of capitalizing seemingly random letters that spell out a message… as in, here, K-I-M. So no, it’s not actually the diss track you were expecting against Aimee Mann. (Just kidding.) But any points lost for not being truly cryptic are made up for with sheer chutzpah. “A bronze spray-tanned statue of you” would seem to be a reference to Kardashian’s penchant for taking on a chemical shade. And “One day, your kid comes home singin’ a song that only us two is gonna know is about you” seems to be a callback to the time North West and her mom danced to a Swift song in a home video (although the song they used in that particular instance, “Shake It Off,” doesn’t qualify as being about Kardashian). Shout-out to mom, too: “Everyone knows that my mother is a saintly woman / But she used to say she wished that you were dead.” Now we know not to invite Kim and Andrea to the same party.

Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus (Bonus Track)

So High School (Bonus Track)

Who we think it’s about: Being in love with Travis The evidence: Aside from the sheer fact that the Tay/Kelce romance feels like the ultimate homecoming king/queen gig, there are these lines: “Are you gonna marry, kiss, or kill me (Kill me) / It’s just a game, but really (Really) / I’m bettin’ on all three for us two (All three).” If Swift is singing in the present day here, as it seems she is, it’s striking enough that she’ll go out on a limb and predict this is the stuff of marriage material. But more than that, specifically, these lines would seem to refer back to an old interview Kelce did when he was asked about Swift, Ariana Grande and Katy Perry and queried who he would marry, kiss and kill. (He put down his future girlfriend at the time for a kiss.)
