How to View Google's 3D Animals and Go on a Virtual Safari

From alligators to zebras, via lions, tigers, and bears, here are all the animals you can view with Google's 3D animals augmented reality tool.

Did you know that you can find and interact with certain animals when you search for them via Google? With 3D search, Google allows you to search for an animal, object, or place, and to view and experience the 3D result, if available, in augmented reality (AR).

For instance, if you search for "zebra" on Google using your iPhone or Android phone, you can view the zebra in 3D and AR, in addition to the regular text, photo, and video results. Whether you are a conservationist, biology teacher, parent, or just a wildlife or animal lover, there's so much you can do with Google 3D animals. Let's take a look at how to set it up.

What Is Google 3D Animals?

Google 3D animals combines 3D technology with augmented reality to help you experience content in a whole new way—one that is both experiential and immersive.

It does two things. First, you can view the animals in 3D. Then, the most interesting part—you can view and interact with them in your space using AR-enabled devices with ARCore. It makes Google 3D animals one of the best AR apps for Android .

There are many animals on offer, which we've listed below. You can view a tiger in 3D, a lion in 3D, farm animals, household pets, and even dinosaurs.

Other Things You Can Find in Google 3D AR

It's not just land animals that you can find, view, and interact with when using Google 3D. You can also find, view, and experience insects in 3D and AR, as well as the following:

  • Underwater and wetland animals
  • Birds, pets, and dinosaurs
  • Human anatomical systems
  • Cellular structures
  • Chemistry, biology, and physics terms
  • Cultural objects and heritage sites
  • Planets and moons

Which Devices Support Google 3D Animals?

Unfortunately, not all devices and browsers support Google 3D animals. It is only available on mobile devices, and browsers such as Chrome, Safari, and Brave. Computers are currently not supported, as well as browsers like Firefox and Edge.

To view 3D results on Android, you need an Android phone with Android 7 and up. To interact with 3D results using AR, you need an Android phone that supports the ARCore framework as mentioned earlier.

iPhone and iPad

You can get Google 3D and AR on iOS. To view 3D results as well as interact with them in AR on your iPhone, you need the iPhone 6S or later, iOS 11 and up, and Safari or the Google app.

How to View Google 3D Animals on Android

It is pretty simple and straightforward to view Google 3D animals on your Android device.

  • Go to Google Search on your home screen or in your browser, or open the Google Assistant app .
  • Type the name of an animal, e.g. zebra, and click search or press Enter .
  • You should see the Meet a life-sized zebra up close section under the Wikipedia entry, containing an animated 3D zebra.
  • Bonus Tip: You can tap on MORE ANIMALS towards the bottom of your screen to view more animals. You can also tap on the share button to share with your friends or to social media, email, etc.
  • Point your phone downward (as suggested by the on-screen prompt) and move it around to find the right spot.
  • Once you find the ground, the animal will appear in the space. Tap to move the life-sized animal around in your space.
  • You can also use pinch and zoom gestures to zoom in or out.
  • Tap on the camera button to take a picture of your AR animal.

Sometimes a search term can bring up lots of non-animal-related results (searching "tiger" might produce results for Tiger Woods instead, for example). If this happens, just add the word "animal" to your search, like "tiger animal."

If you do not see the View in your space button , it means that your phone lacks the ARCore feature that supports AR view. Here's a list of supported devices . The list is constantly updated, so keep an eye out to know when your phone is added.

How to View Google 3D Animals on iPhone

You can view Google 3D animals on your iPhone as well. Here's how to get started.

  • Open Safari and go to google.com , or download and use the Google app instead.
  • Search for any animal on the list (find below), like zebra.
  • On the result page, navigate to the View in 3D button. Tap on it.
  • You should be able to view the result in 3D.
  • To interact with the result in AR, tap AR and follow the screen prompts, or simply tap Object on your iPhone.

What Other Information About 3D Animals Is Shown?

Apart from the 3D animals, you can also view other vital information about the animal species such as speed, family, genus, kingdom, mass, gestation period, and length. You can see these details right on the search results page beneath the Meet a life-sized zebra up close section.

Other details such as predators, population, life cycle, and pregnancy can be viewed by clicking on the drop-down and following the link. All these details make 3D animals a really useful AR app for education .

The Full Google 3D Animals List

You can find, view, and interact with different animals in the Google 3D animals list. Here are the animals you can find in Google 3D animals in alphabetical order.

View Lions, Tigers, and Bears in Google 3D Animals

3D animals are fun to play around with, and parents now use them—especially the tiger—to entertain their children. You can use 3D animals to learn more about animals, including endangered species, and further, explore opportunities to work to save them from extinction.

In all, Google 3D and AR offer a glimpse of what's possible with 3D and augmented reality in the future.

Google 3d animals: 100+ ar critters, dinosaurs, insects, and compatible phones.

Thanks to AR, you can teach your children about animals without leaving home

Augmented reality (AR) can be a fun and valuable tool, especially when teaching children. The implementation of 3D and AR in Google Search is one of the best we've seen. This feature offers a novel way to interact with your favorite critters from your living room. Seeing a dinosaur in your house is an exciting prospect, regardless of your age.

Google expanded its collection of 3D animals. You can access it from almost any phone, whether it's a budget phone or a flagship. We show you all the AR animals available and how to view them on your phone.

Google's 3D animals explained

Google blends augmented reality and 3D technology to let you view and interact with animals in 3D. To start, search for one of the listed animals and select the option to view in 3D. These animals react to your environment, thanks to ARCore . The same software is responsible for AR stickers in the Google camera app. Move the animal to the coffee table, and it stands on it. Combine that with the ability to take pictures and videos, and you can get a photo or video of you having afternoon tea with a tiger.

If you want a more detailed view of these creatures, look at them without AR. Each animal opens like this by default, offering a view in your space button to enter AR mode. You can rotate each model without walking around the room. Zoom in close to see every detail Google packed into each animal. Aside from having no terrain to interact with, they still behave as they do in AR view. The tiger roars, the wolf howls, the dog barks, and the hedgehog burrows.

Which devices support Google's 3D animals?

You can view 3D animals on mobile devices. This feature is not available on laptops and desktop computers. You can access the 3D results from browsers like Chrome and Safari.

To view 3D animals, you need a phone with Android 7 or newer. To use AR, your Android phone must have ARCore support. If you are unsure whether your phone is compatible with ARCore, check Google's list of supported devices . iPhone users can experience 3D animals from Safari or in the Google app.

If you wish to use 3D animals on iOS, you'll need an iPhone 6s or later running iOS11 or later.

How to view 3D animals on your Android phone

Here's how to view 3D critters on Android:

  • Open Google Search in your browser or launch the Google Assistant app.
  • Type the name of an animal in the search bar.
  • Press Enter .
  • Go to the Meet a life-sized [animal name] up close section.
  • Select View in 3D or tap the cube icon .
  • Tap and drag the 3D image to move it around the screen.
  • Tap the animal to move it around.
  • Tap the camera button to click a picture.
  • Hold the camera button to record a video.

How to view 3D animals on your iPhone

Here's how to view 3D creatures on your iPhone:

  • Launch Safari and type google.com or open the Google Assistant app.
  • Select View in 3D .
  • Tap View in your space .

How to interact with 3D animals

When you search for an animal and select the option to view it in 3D, you'll see its animated close-up against a plain background. Swipe around to view the creature from any angle. Use the pinch gesture to zoom in or out.

The background changes to your room when you choose the option to view the animal in your space. You can make it smaller or larger by pinching or zooming. To change its orientation, hold one finger on the creature and use another finger to rotate it.

The best augmented reality games for Android in 2024

Find your favorite ar animal.

These are all the AR animals available. Have fun, and let your imagination run wild.

Go on safari and see wild animals

This category is more varied than others, including dangerous animals like alligators and bears. It also has more tame creatures like ducks and pandas. It's like having a zoo in your own home.

  • Snake (or ball python)
  • White-backed woodpecker

Go swimming with aquatic creatures

This is one of the newer categories, so there aren't many animals to see. For now, your undersea adventure is pretty limited. Google regularly adds new 3D animals, and we'll keep this section updated.

  • Harbor porpoise

Play fetch with a dog

Dogs are our best friends. Google has an extensive list of the best breeds that will bring a smile to your face.

  • Australian Shepherd
  • Border Collie
  • Bull Terrier
  • Cocker Spaniel
  • French Bulldog
  • German Shepherd
  • Golden Retriever
  • Korean Jindo
  • Labrador Retriever
  • Pembroke Welsh Corgi
  • Siberian Husky
  • Yorkshire Terrier

Conjure up your favorite cat

There aren't as many cats on this list as dogs, but there are still more than enough to bring joy to your feline-loving heart. Who can look at a Scottish Fold without feeling happy?

  • Norwegian Forest cat
  • Persian cat
  • Russian Blue
  • Scottish Fold
  • Siamese cat

Visit a farm and find domestic animals

This list has a variety of domesticated animals. You're bound to see a few familiar animals your kids will love, from pets like guinea pigs to farm animals like cows and pigs.

  • Milk cow (dairy cow)
  • Shetland pony

Crawl around with insects

Insects can be hard to observe in the wild due to their small stature, but Google has plenty of them to look at here in AR. Get to know these creepy crawlers without any of the actual crawling.

  • Atlas beetle
  • Brown cicada
  • Evening cicada
  • Firefly (pick the insect, not the movie)
  • Grasshopper
  • Hercules beetle
  • Jewel beetle
  • Ladybug (pick the insect, not the movie)
  • Miyama stag beetle
  • Morpho butterfly
  • Moss carder bee
  • Periodical cicada
  • Robust cicada (or Hyalessa maculaticollis)
  • Rosalia batesi (this card won't show up; find another insect, then look for it in the Related section)
  • Rhinoceros beetle
  • Shining ball scarab beetle (or Leiodidae)
  • Stag beetle
  • Swallowtail butterfly
  • Walker's cicada (or Meimuna opalifera)

Hang out with the dinosaurs

Dinosaurs are cool, and that's a fact. Having one stand on your coffee table is even cooler. Just take our advice and don't put any Velociraptors in the kitchen.

  • Ankylosaurus
  • Brachiosaurus
  • Dilophosaurus
  • Parasaurolophus
  • Spinosaurus
  • Stegosaurus
  • Triceratops
  • Tyrannosaurus Rex
  • Velociraptor

Get imaginative with fictional animals

As much as we'd like dragons and unicorns to exist, they don't. That doesn't make watching a dragon breathe flame any less cool. Hopefully, Google will add more fictional animals to its collection.

Google 3D animals: How to conjure AR animals with Google search and more

With Google's 3D objects, you can put virtual animals in your real world. (Plus some other options.)

safari 3d animals

  • Nearly 20 years writing about tech, and over a decade reviewing wearable tech, VR, and AR products and apps

tiger-ar

Google's got AR tigers and more.

Feeling bored? Put a virtual animal in your home. One thing that might have felt like a passing fad but still gets people's attention (at least according to the new likes on my old Twitter thread about it) is this list of augmented-reality animals that I dropped into the real world through Google search. That's right. AR animals, now that we're all becoming stay-at-home people for a while and can't go to zoos or pet shops, are a thing. Google has added even more AR searchable things like skeletons and microscopic cell structures, but animals ( and dinosaurs ) are probably more adorable.

If you've been curious and haven't tried it yet, I have some tips.

First I saw some news stories linking to my Twitter thread. Then, my first-grader son asked what another kid was doing on his school video chat: It turns out she was making a cat appear on her head, and in her room, all via AR. It's because of them -- and you -- that I'm giving you my guide on How to Make Magic Animals Appear.

The easy way is directly below. Keep scrolling for two other methods to put virtual animals in your mixed-reality world.

Google search now has AR this morning. I just conjured a tiger on NJT. The feature works for some animals right now (iOS, ARCore phones) pic.twitter.com/rJ3SJFUZX1 — Scott Stein (@jetscott) May 30, 2019

First off, the easy way

Google put 3D objects into Google search over a year ago. To find them, you need to search on Google for the right ones. Think of an animal. Type it in. See what happens. Google has a lot of animals, and also some space objects like planets and satellites via NASA. And the list of 3D objects may increase, based on indications from Google and Apple .

First make sure you have an AR-ready device. For iPhones and iPads, you'll need iOS 11 or higher. And you'll need a phone or iPad that's not older than an iPhone 6S or SE, or a third-gen iPad Air, or fifth-gen iPad, or any iPad Pro. Or, a seventh-gen iPod Touch. (Yes, Apple's model naming gets super confusing.)

Android phones need to be ARCore compatible, which includes a lot of models running Android 7 or later. Here's a helpful list of all the phones that 9to5Google compiled .

Then launch Google Chrome (or Safari on an iPhone or iPad), search for your animal -- it doesn't have to just be a tiger -- and somewhere on the page will be a Google information box that also has a "View in 3D" button.

google-cat-ar-seach

See that "View in 3D" button? That's your AR link in Google Search.

Click on it, then a viewer will appear showing where you can place your virtual animal. Move your phone around as it instructs, so it can scan your floor. Leave some extra space to place it.

Congrats -- you have an AR animal!

cat-ar-google

Soooo cute.

Pinch to zoom to make it bigger or smaller.

What if you don't see the 3D button? I've had people ask me this. You might be browsing in desktop-view mode. On iOS 13, in Safari, try tapping the Aa  icon on the search bar. If you see an option that says "request mobile website," tap on it. In Chrome, go to settings (the ...  icon on the lower right) and if you see "request mobile site," tap on it.

Another tip: To record it, you could take a screenshot (tap your power and volume button or power and home button on an iPhone or iPad), or do a screen capture video on iOS if you're fancy. Pro tip: You can add screen capture recording to your Control Center tools in Control Center settings, which easily allows you to start and stop recordings and save them to your photo roll. Or, just be in the moment and enjoy seeing your animal buddy.

A starter list of Google AR 3D animals

I've hunted around and found a bunch, but a larger trial-and-error list compiled by 9to5Google includes:

  • Angler fish
  • Ball python
  • Dog (bulldog, pomeranian, Labrador retriever, rottweiler, pug)
  • Emperor penguin
  • Giant panda
  • Shetland pony

sketchfab-scorpion-ar

Ahhhh, giant Sketchfab scorpion!

Option 2: Even more animals

You can download some AR-compatible apps to try on the App Store or Google Play. One free app with a ton of AR-compatible 3D objects is Sketchfab , an online 3D object repository that has its own app, and recently updated to better support Apple's AR. It's a little harder to browse through, but there are tons of user-created things that can be dropped into your world.

I found a scorpion, many dinosaurs and more. This isn't a great option for kids, though: best to do with your kids and vet out if there's anything weird on Sketchfab that isn't appropriate or too scary.

me-bear-snapchat-ar

Oh my goodness, this bear.

Option 3: Don't forget about Snapchat

Snapchat's wildly good face filters and AR effects offer some animal transformations and disguises, too (or, even room-altering effects , depending on the day). You'll need a Snapchat account, and I'd suggest parents do this with kids together rather than have them play on their own -- not all options may be suitable.

Once in Snapchat, the small smiley-face on the right of the larger circle at the bottom brings up face filters. You can browse through a bunch of weird and fun experiments -- again, parents, vet out the scary ones; this isn't entirely kid-friendly.

But you could try one out and have fun, and not record any of them. Or, press the shutter button (the circle) to snap, or hold to record a clip. When done, you can save locally to your phone by hitting the "save" icon on the lower-left corner of the screen, and it saves to your own photos so you don't have to post anything online if you don't want to.

Step 2: Open Google search

Once you confirm that your device is compatible, open the Google search app on your phone or tablet.

Step 3: Search for any of the compatible animals

Type any of the compatible animals into the search bar. For example, you might search for the Lion.

Step 4: Tap on the “View in 3D” button

After you search for the animal, scroll down past the search results, and you will see the option “View in 3D”. Tap on that button to bring the animal to life.

Step 5: Use your screen and move around

Once you tap on the button, your camera screen will open up so that you can see the animal in 3D. You can move your device around and watch the animal move and explore its environment.

Safari Puzzle Animals – Kids Paper Craft

Though the weather is still nice and toasty, summer break is winding down. But, before we send those kiddos back to school (or back to “distance learning” in many cases), I thought I’d share a fun paper craft for both adults and kids to enjoy. Spend a little time making these cute safari puzzle animals today!

Safari Puzzle Animals

After seeing people making really simple felt puzzle animals for their kids, and I thought it would be fun to make my own paper versions. As I designed these, I wanted them to have slightly more dimension than some of the felt ones I had seen: so that the animals are a little more recognizable.

When putting these together for this post, I chose to add a little hot glue to the cross sections so that they would hold up well when I photographed them; but, I’m going to make a second set for my kids to use that they can put together and take a part over and over again.

Safari Puzzle Animals

I had kids in mind when I crated these designs, but I had so much fun putting them together myself, that there really is no reason that adults can’t enjoy them. Once I had them assembled, I made my husband come in and look at them all because I just thought they were so dang cute!

Safari Puzzle Animals

I use Adobe Illustrator for all of my designs, and a Cricut Maker to bring my creations to life. For tips on creating fun paper cuts like this one, see the FAQ section on my website. Also, be sure to check out the other 3D freebies available on my blog!

Enjoy putting these safari puzzle animals together! If I create more sets like these, what kinds of animals would you like to see next?

Thank you soooo much for your free designs. I was trying to figure what to do with my grand kids this weekend and they will LOVE making the animals and the Doll House. They already love the paper lanterns. I appreciate you taking the time to make the designs.

Have a wonderful day! Leanne

Love these. Any type animal made like these would be great for kids. I make cards for hospitalized kids that are sent by an organization all over the US. I think adding an envelope containing one of theses would be great. Thank you so much for sharing ideas for free that others would probably sell instead os sharing.

That is very cool! What a great way to spread kindness and joy! I’m glad my designs can be a part of it. ❤️

WOW!! You are the most GENEROUS person I’ve ever come across!!! Thank you so much!!! Very sweet also. I think I read you’re the oldest of 10? I’ve got you beat by one, and I’M in the middle, and also probably old enough to be your mother, but we still have that LARGE family think in common. Thanks again!

Thank you so much! And it’s always awesome to meet someone else who comes from a big family. You and I were never without a friend growing up, that’s for sure! 😊

C’est magnifique. Merci pour ce partage

You are most welcome!

I love these! I’m making a few for a baby shower in a couple of weeks. I want to use hot glue to keep them together. How did you glue them without the glue looking bulky? Thanks!

Glad you like them! I use a fine tip glue gun, similar to this one and it keeps the glue from being too messy:

What type of paper do you recommend for this craft? Thanks.

Any kind of carstock would likely be fine, but the thicker the paper the better. 🙂

Thank you! I’m really looking forward to making this with my kids 🙂

Description

A set of 5 safari animal models for tracing. Each model has an ergonomic knob which makes drawing your safari animals even easier. Let your children explore safari and let them be creative!

You can let them trace the animals by themselves, or you can trace the animals for them and make them a little coloring sheet. Any way, you can get some inspiration in the gallery.

Each animal is available in three variants - facing left, facing right and without a knob. It is a great gift for both toddlers and preschool children.

You will find these models great especially if you are a non-drawing parent like me. Hope you and your kids will love it!

Dimensions (height x width):

  • elephant - 6x9 cm
  • giraffe - 9x6.5 cm
  • hippo - 5x9.5 cm
  • lion - 6x6 cm
  • zebra - 6x5 cm
  • knob - 1x1x1 cm

Happy drawing!

P. S. You might want to edit settings for the first layer - if you slice your STLs with elephant foot compensation at 0.2 mm, it might be a problem to print tails of some animals. I used 0.1 mm and it worked just fine. (I haven't tried to print with default settings in PrusaSlicer, I changed the settings based on my experience with similar models with very thin parts, so this might be totally useless information for you 🙂 )

Recent additions to San Diego Zoo Safari Park

It's all about working together to promote conservation and make the world a better place for those with two, four or maybe no feet at all.

ESCONDIDO, Calif. — The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is a world-class experience with 1,800 acres of sprawling savannas teeming with wildlife and botanical gardens.

They want to let everyone know about their latest additions to premium experiences.

It's not all about having fun and getting an up close and personal view of rhinos, giraffes, and wildebeest. It's all about working together to promote conservation and make the world a better place for those with two, four, or maybe no feet at all.  Marco Wendt is the Wildlife Ambassador for the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. "Everything we do is about Conservation. From the Wildlife Safari that we just experienced to the roar and snore, to even kids walking off the African Tram," Wendt explained. The San Diego Safari Park is one of San Diego's gems. And in the last couple of years, they've upgraded your access with what they call premium experiences – including hot air balloon rides or mimosa tours. "It's an added level of opportunity for the Safari Park and Zoo and they vary throughout the year so you never know what you're going to get," Wendt shared. "Roar and Snore is amazing, friend! When the sun is setting the Safari Park completely transforms and you can experience the sights and sounds of the Safari Park at night. It’s beautiful!"

Those are just some of the ways you can get a little more out of your next trip to the Safari Park. You must book in advance and prices vary by experience. It all works together to make sure they can continue to preserve this space and protect the animals because even on our exclusive tour, we had to pause for the protection cause.

CBS 8 was able to capture video of a group of baby ducklings who had wandered too far from their natural habitat and were in the path of several tour buses. That’s when Wendt hopped out of the caravan and gathered all the lost animals by hand. At least three vehicles full of visiting guests stopped in their tracks on the small dirt road to make sure the baby ducklings would be okay. "Mom was over there in the water and all we had to do was relocate over to the water and they're happy little duckies. This is their home and we're visiting here," Wendt reminded everyone. For tickets, pricing, information about the premium experience, and how you can help with their mission to make sure we're living in a world where animals and humans can thrive together visit the  San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s website.
