The Sigean African Reserve - Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Aude

An important conservation area for the natural environment and endangered animal species, the Sigean African Reserve, nestling on the edge of the Bages-Sigean lagoons, is home to nearly 900 mammals, 600 reptiles and 2,000 birds living in its 300 hectares in semi-captivity.

Open to the public throughout the year, the Sigean Reserve provides two ways to enjoy the space:

A trip of about an hour by car, passing through the African Bush, the Tibetan bear park, the lion park and the African savannah, where you can admire white rhinoceroses, zebra and Somalian donkeys, amongst others.

There's a walking circuit of about three hours, for adults and children to go in search of antelopes, ostriches and other animals of the African plain. In the course of your walk you can also find the chimpanzees' island, the vivarium and the Œil de Ca lake, dotted with pink flamingos and pink-backed pelicans...

Additional information The Sigean African Reserve

Safari Park & Zoo

Although not a cheap visit, this is an excellent day out for children. The animals have plenty of space to roam around in the safari park, which is dedicated to education and conservation.

Quite expensive but worth every penny. We've been several times, taken friends there and always had a splendid day out. Wear comfortable shoes because the walking areas are very worthwhile.

The lion park is wonderful and to see thes animals with so much space to roam is a joy

The Safari park is an extremely well organised attraction in Sigean. The park is divided into two sections. The first sections is done in the car and lasts approx. 1 hour. The route is well signposted and because we visited in January, was not busy. There are so many animals to see and the views around the park are breathtaking. We were actually 2 metres away from a pride of lions! The second part of the experience is done on foot and lasts about 2 hours - or as long as you want it to. Once again we were really impressed with the variety and amount of animals and birds - The view of the Flamingos and Pelicans on the lake was magical and you really feel that you are viewing them in their natural surroundings. The Reserve is clean and well equipped. We enjoyed a lovely lunch in the restaurant which was reasonably priced. All in all we had a fantastic day! Don't forget your camera.

safari a sigean

Felt as though we were on the Africaine Plains! Didn't expect to see lots of animals and were pleasantly surprised! Drove through all the reserves and were able to sit and watch the different animals. Probably too busy in the height of the summer and too hot - so May was ideal. Once you have driven around, you park your car and there are areas to walk around. There are restaurants and cafes, but you can take your own food and picnic - which is probably better. There was so much to see, we stayed until the evening. I would certainly recommend it and look forward to returning.

We went to the Sigean african reserve on the last Saturday in July 2011. You can easily spend a full day here and it is an experience which comes quite close to seeing animals in their natural environment. After reading all of the negative reviews on trip advisor I was quite worried that we would be stuck in traffic - but we arrived directly at the gates at 11am without being in a single traffic queue. The cost was 27 euros per adult, but as our children are under 4 years old they got in for free. We didn't think that a family day out for 54 euros was too bad - considering what you get! However, if the children are over 4 then they pay 21 euros, which does seem a little steep. The safari drive was well marked - and you can drive around as many times as you want. We went once at midday but the bears and lions were sleeping, but when we drove around again at about 4pm the animals were a lot more active and there were fewer cars driving the circuit. The animals were also close enough to see clearly and take good photos (some attached to the review). Ostriches only appeared to be a problem if they were antagonised by the car drivers. The zoo part of the complex was well maintained. It didn't appear dirty and most of the animals had quite a lot of space. I don't remember seeing anything in a cage or behind bars. We also ate in the restaurant on site, and found nothing to complain about. The food was standard tourist fayre but not prohibitively expensive. (6 euros for a childs lunchbox and about 7 euros for an adult main course). Tables were being cleared away efficiently and the staff were helpful. We visited together with another family and we all agreed that it was a great day out which was well worth the money.

Sigean Wildlife Park : a safari adventure in the heart of Occitania

Take your little tribe to the Sigean African Reserve between Narbonne and Perpignan, and enjoy an original experience during a safari in the bush and the savannah. A hymn to nature and wildlife to add an even more exotic touch to your holiday in the Aude region !

A little piece of Africa at the heart of the Narbonnaise regional nature park

To spend the day close to wildlife and experience an unforgettable adventure, head for the reserve, between Narbonne and Perpignan in Aude , 35 km from your holiday residence in Occitanie . The Sigean African Reserve is on the Mediterranean coast at the edge of the Narbonnais lakes. It is home to 3,800 animals in semi-captivity in an area over 300 hectares. The reserve aims to help protect the future generations of endangered species. Come and see it!

A day's safari by car and on foot

40 minutes away from Olydea le Neptune Saint-Pierre-la-Mer , our holiday residence, a visit to the Sigean animal park combines a trip by car and on foot. Groups can also opt for a visit to the park in a minibus together with a park guide. A visit take 3 to 4 hours, but you can easily spend the whole day there.

During the 7.5 km (1 hour) visit, you first see the African bush parks, where giraffes, zebra, buffaloes, antelope and ostriches live, and then the Tibetan bear park and the lion park. Next up is the African Savannah, the kingdom of the white rhinoceros, warthogs and the Somali wild ass.

You then swap your car for your walking shoes. A long trail takes you on a journey into natural, wide-open spaces: heathland, pine forest, lakes, marshes, plains and hills. Almost all the animals of Africa can be found here, from African antelopes to chimpanzees, via cheetahs and African wild dogs. Here you can also meet all kinds of feathered friends, including flamingoes, white storks and pink-backed pelicans.

A quick detour to the Tropical House is an opportunity to get up close to American alligators, to watch the turtles, iguana and cameleons and to shudder with fright at the boas and pythons. In short, a total and close-up wildlife immersion!

Things To Do Review

Cherry Awards Rating

Reserve Africaine de Sigean houses part of the African animal kingdom, including the wildest of it and in better than zoo conditions.

The safari type area has free running animals and getting close to them is done by car. You drive among them and, if you are lucky, they will show up so that you can take your photos.

Avoid very hot times as the animals will be chasing some cool shadows and you will be left with your binoculars wondering where they are.

There is also an area that you can get out and walk.

It cost of admission to the Reserve Africaine de Sigean is €30 p.p., so it is not cheap. But it is very rare to see these safaris in Europe.

Sigean African Reserve

The different species are selected to be able to adapt to the southern Fren c h climate, with hot summers and not too cold winters. Some species that get on well together live wild in large flocks.

The safari (in your own car) takes you through a natural landscape, with lakes, wetlands, hills and plains and groves with pineforest. Each area consists of about ten hectares, and you drive between the different parts of the areas.

You will see lions, monkeys, bears, gazelles, impalas, buffaloes, rhinos, meerkats, giraffes … and curious zebras coming all the way close to the car. The ostriches are so nosy that it’s best to pull up the car windows!

In addition to the car safari, there is an area with a more traditional zoo with reptiles and smaller animals, which you visit by foot.

There is a restaurant on site, but there are also areas where you can have your picnic.

The site is open every day, all year around, read more about opening hours and prices.

South of France with kids: Sigean African Safari park

South of France with kids: Sigean African Safari park, France

It is a good 18 months since we took our boys here, but they still talk about it. The safari park is very well laid out and has a great selection animals all within spacious enclosure. When we went the Pink Flamingos were flying in. It is well worth the visit, although I can imagine it gets busy in the Summer.

Prices: from memory it was quite expensive to get into the Sigean African Safari park, but you can take your own food in to even out the cost. I think it was around €60 for the car.

Getting there: Sigean African Safari park is located south of Narbonne off the A9 at junction 39. You can't miss it, it is signposted from Paris!! For further details please visit: Sigean African Safari park, France .

A good (cheaper) alternative to Sigean African Safari is Montpellier Zoo. The zoo is free to get into and you can easily spend a day wandering around this large park. See Montpellier zoo for more details.

Sigean in France: What is it really? Safari, zoo or theme park?

First things first, what exactly is Sigean? I know that many of you have doubts about this, so I'm going to see if I can explain to you what in my opinion and experience could define what Sigean is.

Well, first of all, I would say that this place is a mix between safari and zoo. Imagine coming across lions, antelopes and rhinos while driving in your car, because that is the safari part, then seeing giraffes and chimpanzees walking in fairly large but fenced enclosures, because that is the zoo part. It's like being in Africa, but in France within a controlled space!

Flamingos in total freedom within Sigean, one of the areas that we liked the most in Sigean with children

Our own experience

This winter , we decided to spend the first day of the Purísima Bridge in Sigean. That experience! In Spain it wasn't that cold and when we got there the cold really enveloped us but also the wind! The blessed Tramuntana storm hit us all day.

When we arrived, first thing in the morning, we thought that today was not the day... but...

Despite the time in sigean , we could see the 90% of animals active and in their splendor, what a surprise! My children were excited to see the lions roar and the bears frolic. We didn't even believe it.

Only the chimpanzees were sheltered, we don't know where (their space is huge) and we couldn't see even one...they really are the most similar to humans hehe, I would have also taken refuge like them from the wind blowing hehe.

Video of our visit and experience in Sigean

Why visit Sigean

If you are wondering why you should visit Sigean, here are some reasons, which are also some of the objectives of the Sigean African Reserve:

  • Conservation of endangered species: There are 44 protection and conservation programs for African animal species in Sigean.
  • Investigation: By visiting, we contribute to university students continuing to research some species where there is still much to know.
  • Education: Learn about African fauna and its conservation.
  • Fun: It's a perfect plan for the whole family!
  • Unique experience: It's not every day you can say you've been on safari in France.

Without a doubt, only by visiting the Sigean African Reserve, which is their largest source of income, can conservation, research and education be carried out, which are the 3 objectives of the Sigean Reserve.

The Sigean lion area

Where is it and how to get there

Sigean is located in the south of France, in the heart of Norbonnaise Regional Natural Park , in the town called like the same reserve, sigean .

Very close to the sea and the coastal town Port-la-Nouvelle or Gruissan , where it is famous for its salt flats, where there is a museum of the salt flats that is worth visiting if you go.

The peculiarity of where it is is that it is in a humeral area, full of lakes and ponds, between fresh and salt water.

Getting there is quite simple. We, as always, went in our motorhome, and the trip was very comfortable, in 2 hours and a few minutes from near Barcelona we arrived in Sigean for the AP7 highway easily and comfortably. Just have to pay the part of the toll from France until the exit of Sigean which does not reach 20 €uros.

When to visit Sigean

If you are wondering about the They follow time better to visit it, I will tell you that it is better to visit it in spring or fall , due to the temperate temperatures. But if you fear es see or not more or less animals , I would tell you that you will see them practically all year round since it is never so cold in the area that you cannot see them, the South of France and where it is has temperatures that are not extreme in terms of cold.

We went in the middle of winter as I told you above, during December , and the day was very cold and windy, but we saw the 90% of animals without problem , yes we were early in the morning. The truth is that the worst was the walk on foot with the north wind that I took. The good thing is that inside the vehicle it was very comfortable and we could see practically all the animals, and the best no crowds of people in the park or vehicles, something that I highly recommend to relax and enjoy.

Entrance to Sigean, where you can access the ticket offices with your vehicle

How much do tickets to Sigean cost?

All the Follow entries They have a price that varies depending on the season and the available offers. It is best to look at the Sigean official website and buy them before going directly to it to ensure you can access it and at the best price.

It cost us 102 Euros for the family pack 2 adults + 2 children What do they do with the access of the vehicle, which in our case was our motorhome.

Sigean discounts and offers

If you are looking for an Follow discount tickets , I recommend that you look at their official website. There are always interesting offers!

The most interesting offer for us from Sigean is the one they always have from Family Pack of 2 adults and up to 3 children , where they discount 3 euros for each entry.

On the other hand, Sigean at Christmas They usually get a super attractive offer that costs 33 euros for an adult and 25 euros for a ticket and a 24-year-old child costs 15 Euros, a super offer, where they also do raffles among those who buy the discount tickets.

Another offer that Sigean makes for now in 2024, when the reserve turns 50, is that, if it is the day of your birthday , upon presentation of your ID, They give you your ticket!

Tickets 2×1 Sigean

It is not the normal Sigean offer, so they are not always available, but if you find 2×1 Sigean tickets , it is on its official website, if you find it, take advantage of it!

Walking area, where you can access to touch some dwarf goats for the little ones

To plan your visit, it is important to know the Follow schedule . They are open every day of the year, 365 days, but hours may vary depending on the season, especially from summer to winter, when it gets dark earlier.

Winter hours are the shortest and they open from 9 to 17: 30 hours. In summer the hours are extended with sunlight and you can access a couple more hours.

Follow animals you can see

From majestic lions to adorable meerkats, Sigean has a wide variety of They follow animals that will leave you breathless.

We saw a lot of different antelopes, zebras, rhinos, giraffes, ostriches, monkeys, many flamingos and some pelicans, beautiful bears and a lot of other animals.

Follow the map that they give you when you enter the ticket office

So you don't miss anything, be sure to pick up a Sigean map to enter. He is your best ally!

On the map you can not only see where you are going or where you want to go, but it also indicates the animals that you can see in each area and is super useful for identifying all the species.

Tips for visiting Sigean with children

Below, based on our experience, I make a list of tips that I would have liked to have had before going with our family, I hope it helps you:

  • Get your Family Pack ticket : where they will deduct 3 euros per head, something is something.
  • Sunscreen: If you go in summer, don't forget sunscreen! And in winter, dress warmly in case the north wind blows like us hehehe.
  • Picnic. In the parking area where you go to the Reserve area on foot, there is a picnic area with tables, if you bring a picnic it is ideal, but you also have a couple of restaurants right in the walking area.
  • Water and snacks: It's always good to bring something to snack on and water...you know that sooner or later, if I'm hungry or thirsty, it's there hehe.
  • Binoculars: There are very large areas where you can see the animals in the distance, but with binoculars your children will feel like absolute explorers on a safari and they will see them up close!
  • Camera: You'll want to capture every moment! And the children too, so bring some for them, they will love it.

In the parking lot for access to the Sigean motorhome walking area, where there are picnic tables next to it.

Sigean in motorhome

We are fans of motorhome adventures, you already know that we go everywhere with our Kucavana, our motorhome, which is what our blog is named after. So, visiting Sigean in our motorhome was an unforgettable experience. There is no access problem with a motorhome, on the contrary it is wonderful to go with your house on wheels.

The ideal place to sleep in summer is in the annexed campsite. Camping La Grange Neuve with swimming pools and next to the animals, but in winter this campsite is closed so if you go like us when it is closed what we recommend is to sleep in one of the nearby vineyards that allow you to spend the night in exchange for a purchase or tasting of their wines.

We sleep in the Domaine Château du Lac Laurent Parnaud , super good, quiet, safe, very accessible with the motorhome and at 18 hours each day they do the wine tasting and tasting Doing it in the castle that they are renovating is highly recommended. Access is open 24 hours a day, so it is highly advisable, although the store only opens with the tasting at 18 p.m., so we advise you to arrive before that time. The only bad thing is that it only has 4 places for motorhomes.

Ostriches in the middle of the Sigean motorhome safari vehicle safari road

Sigean: Our personal opinion about our experience

In closing, I must say that the Sigean African Reserve with children It is an experience that for us, despite the doubts of doing it in the middle of December, was very positive. We saw a lot of animals and many of them really had a good area of land, although it is true that some animals could be in larger areas, especially those in the walking area, which is more zoo style than safari.

The combination of nature, education and fun makes Sigean a perfect plan for the whole family and if above all we think about the 44 species conservation programs they have, I don't see a better way to contribute to it, although someone who has many reluctance towards zoos and captive animals.

Until the next adventure, travelers!

Volvería a ir.
