Sharjah Safari

A new world-class tourist destination, Sharjah Safari is the new spot for all adventure lovers.

Experience real adventure in the largest safari in the world outside Africa, and enjoy an adventure that takes you to the jungles, here in Sharjah

Sharjah Safari

A new tourist destination, inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, on February 17, 2022, Sharjah Safari is the new spot for all adventure lovers. A picturesque place nestled in the lap of nature, Sharjah Safari constitutes a rare opportunity for tourists and visitors to observe the endemic wildlife in Africa. Native African faunae roam without fences, in an environment similar to their natural environment. Sharjah Safari is host to more than 120 species of animals, which live in Africa and up to 50,000 animals, ranging from birds, reptiles and mammals; such as lions, elephants, giraffes, black and white rhinoceros, crocodiles, deer, bulls and many other endangered animals.

12 different environments, inspired by all parts of Africa, represent the life and terrain of the continent, and the animals and birds that live in it. Sharjah Safari contains several areas that simulate the real regions of Africa, and the first area, "To Africa", takes visitors on a unique walking experience to explore the wildlife endemic to the islands and archipelagos scattered along the eastern coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. The second region, the Sahel, is represented by deserts, pastures and diverse wildlife. It extends in Africa from the Atlantic coast of Mauritania in the west to Eritrea and the Red Sea in the east, and is a transitional area rich in wildlife between the Sahara Desert in the north and the Savannah to the south.

The third region, the Savannah, extends in eastern and southern Africa from the coast in the north to the Kalahari in the southwest. This African tropical grassland covers half the area of the African continent and is home to the largest concentration of biodiversity on Earth. While the fourth region, the Serengeti, celebrates the largest migration of animals in the world every year, as large groups of herbivores migrate across the Serengeti plains, and works to attract predators and animals that feed on carrion, crossing the Mara River, where Nile crocodiles lie in the murky waters, a dangerous predator to migratory herbivores.

The fifth region, Nkorongoro, formed from an extinct crater, is a unique ecosystem and home to some of Africa's most famous species. While the sixth region, Moremi, is inspired by the canyons and valleys of southwest Africa that were formed over centuries by heavy monsoon rains, and these dry and sandy riverbeds contain aquifers that support life throughout the dry season.

  • Regions in the Park

Plan a trip with the family to Sharjah Safari – dubbed the world’s largest safari park outside of Africa. At this 8,000-hectare park, you’ll get to experience a litany of fascinating and exotic species, such as giraffes, lions and even a black rhinoceros! Located in Al Bridi Nature Reserve in Al Dhaid, Sharjah, this staggeringly huge park whisks you away to an Africa-like landscape and showcases the diversity and richness of the continent’s wildlife. So, without further ado, let us tell you everything there is to know about this spectacular safari park.

ABOUT THE PARK

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bayut.com (@bayutuae)

Sharjah Safari is home to over 1,000 animals and birds across a range of 120 species, including lions, gazelles, elephants, crocodiles and many rare African animals. Particular highlights include the extremely rare black rhino, and Wuhaida, a female southern white rhino born at the park.

Aside from the truly amazing array of wildlife, there are also over 1,000 native and African trees planted on the land, including beautiful Samar trees, and the iconic Acacia tortilis – famous for it’s striking umbrella-like shape. The majestic landscape of the park, which covers an astonishing eight square kilometres, really is a sight to behold.

Sharjah Safari Park is also home to a large and beautiful natural lake, which is encircled by various cafes, restaurants, a conference hall, a safari visitor’s tent and other impressive amenities. All in all, it’s a good alternative to Dubai Safari Park .

REGIONS IN THE PARK

There are 12 environments in the park to explore, each depicting a distinct African location and the lives of the native animals and birds. Here are some highlights of the various areas in Sharjah Safari Park Al Dhaid:

  • The first component of the park’s walking tour allows visitors to experience an eclectic array of African birds as they stroll down Baobab Avenue.
  • The next stop is the vibrant Zanzibar village, where guests can tuck into tasty eats in an authentic African setting before embarking on their wild safari.
  • Sahel, the second major region in Sharjah Safari Park, is home to deserts, grasslands and a vast range of fauna. It depicts Africa’s vast wildlife-rich corridor between the Sahara Desert and Savannah regions.
  • Only visitors in luxury automobiles continue their trek to the third zone, Savannah. This area is home to a fascinating array of spieces, including the Scimitar Oryx and Dorcas Gazelle.
  • The Serengeti settlement is the next stop. Note that this part of the trip is not for the faint of heart, as only the courageous can take selfies with the Serengeti Lion hidden behind glass. Visitors to the Serengeti will also be able to observe one of Earth’s oldest and most resilient animal species, the mighty crocodile!
  • The last region of the tour is Moremi village, where friendly animals will come across your path and say their goodbyes.

Visitors who want to spend more time in the park’s glorious outdoors before leaving can stay at the safari camp.

Guide To Sharjah Safari Park

The long-awaited Sharjah Safari park, which promises to be the biggest outside of Africa, will open its doors to visitors for the first time close to Dubai . The huge animal attraction is located in Al Bridi Nature Reserve in Al Dhaid, Sharjah, ( map ) and encompasses an area of eight square kilometres.

Sharjah Safari park is host to even more than 120 creatures, including rare African animals, the black rhinoceros being the most unusual. The land has been planted with over 1,000 native and African plants, such as the umbrella-shaped Acacia Tortilis.

At Sharjah Safari Park, What Can You Expect To See?

Visitors to Sharjah Safari park will be able to observe more than 1,000 animals and birds on opening day, including 70 African species. One of the main attractions is the black rhinoceros, which is regarded as one of the most endangered creatures.

Wuhaida, the very first female southern white rhino born at Sharjah Safari park in August of last year, is another highlight. Wuhaida was born as a result of the Safari’s African native species breeding programme, which is backed by the United Nations.

Well, of course, there are plenty of places to visit in Sharjah , Sharjah Safari Park is one of them. Do you want to know everything there is to do at Sharjah Safari Park? You’ve arrived at the right location.

Sharjah Safari Park in Al Bridi Nature Reserve has been in the works for seven years and does not disappoint. The UAE’s greatest wildlife attraction is simply enormous, designed to imitate a true African safari and embrace 12 different settings.

When you visit Sharjah Safari Park, here are seven of the coolest things to do.

Watch Around 100 Animals And Birds

Isn’t seeing the magnificent creatures the main reason you came? Marvel at the park’s massive expanse and the wonderful animals that inhabit it. The park is massive, measuring roughly 800 hectares (2.5 times the size of Central Park, for comparison). It’s also home to around 1000 animals and birds, including giraffes, wildebeest, lions, elephants, flamingos, rhinos, and crocodiles, among 120 species. Meanwhile, over 1000 indigenous and African trees offer all the required greenery and vegetation for the animals and flora to thrive.

Consider Taking A Walking Tour

To provide the most genuine experience possible, the park is divided into 12 habitats, each of which is designed to represent a different African region.

Bronze tickets cost Dhs40 for over 12s (Dhs15 for children aged three to 12) and allow you to take a two-to-three-hour walking tour of the Africa zone.

Take A Bus Tour

If walking isn’t your thing, a silver ticket (Dhs120 for those over 12 and Dhs50 for those aged three to 12) can get you on a bus trip that will take you around all the zones save the “Serengeti” in about five hours.

Giraffe & White Rhino

The park contains a separate area dedicated to giraffes, 15 of which were released into the wild and have subsequently adapted to safari life. Bridi, the first African female giraffe born at Sharjah Safari, is the star of the show (and the giraffe everyone wants to see)

However, Bridi does not receive all the focus. When Wuhaida, a southern white rhino, was born in Sharjah Safari’s breeding programme last August, she was the first of her endangered species to be born there.

The Savannah area at Sharjah Safari Park is based on the same one found in Africa; it stretches from the seashore in the north to Kalhari in the south in eastern and Southern Africa.

It’s one of the most visited tropical destinations on the planet. If you enjoy the outdoors, this site is a must-see. Furthermore, it is surrounded by African grassland, which is an incredible sight to see.

Savannah also has the most biodiversity on the planet, so you can expect nothing but a wonderful adventure there.

Last but not least, the Moremi area is influenced by Africa’s southwest region’s spectacular canyons and valleys, which have been shaped over time by monsoon rains.

You may also see the gorgeous yellow giraffes here. Prepare to have an incredible time in this hidden gem, and don’t forget to snap plenty of photos.

Relax and refuel

Visits to the park are only going to get better, owing to a large natural lake that will be flanked by cafes and restaurants, as well as a conference hall and visitor’s camp, great for replenishing after all the excitement. (see also info about Dubai Miracle Garden )

An upcoming wildlife attraction in Sharjah promises to be an "unparalleled natural destination in the region".

Preparations are gathering pace for Sharjah Safari, which will be home to more than 120 species – including rare animals native to Africa, the rarest of which will be the black rhinoceros.

The safari, which will be the largest in the world outside Africa, will have more than 100,000 native and African trees, the most important of which are Acacia tortilis.

Officials at the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) unveiled the logo for the eagerly awaited tourist spot at a press conference on Thursday.

Hana Al Suwaidi, chairwoman of the EPAA, said the sprawling park will be made up of 12 environments representing the terrain of Africa and will include a section for giraffes, 15 of which were released in the wild to adapt to the safari atmosphere, and an area for rhinos.

"With the approval of Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council member and Ruler of Sharjah, the Sharjah Safari project, set within the Albridi Reserve in Al Dhaid, was the most important event in the authority's extended journey," Ms Al Suwaidi said.

"Many years of work have gone into protecting the environment, preserving nature and ensuring the availability of resources for future generations, as national wealth and sustainable development.

"The Emirate of Sharjah and the UAE will soon have a tourist attraction and an unparalleled natural destination in the region. We look forward to Sharjah Safari contributing to preserving biodiversity and wildlife and highlighting the efforts of the emirate."

The Sharjah Safari logo features four animals; an elephant, a giraffe, a lion and a rhinoceros.

Safari already making its mark

An opening date for the safari is still to be confirmed but it is already carrying out crucial conservation work.

In August, the birth of a southern white rhino on site was announced, giving new hope for a species that has faced the threat of extinction for more than a century.

The baby rhino was the result of a breeding programme, supported by the UN, that focuses on African native species.

The southern white rhino is primarily found in South Africa and continues to be in peril from poachers.

First thought to be extinct as far back as 1895, the species is making something of a comeback, with its population now estimated to be in excess of 20,000.

“There were many challenges in breeding this species. They are used to living in open landscape space in the savannahs,” Ms Al Suwaidi said at the time.

“They prefer humid environments because their skin is very dry. It was a big challenge to create the adequate environment and breed it here in Sharjah.

“Thankfully, the species found themselves in a safe environment in the safari and the breeding worked."

5 best places to visit in Al Dhaid

5 Best Places to Visit in Al Dhaid

Al Dhaid is the main town in Sharjah Central Region and there are lots of plans to develop it. For now, these are 5 Best Places to Visit in Al Dhaid this winter!

Disclosure: When you make a booking or purchase through links on this site, I may earn commission from partners at no extra cost to you. This helps me to build the site and bring you more great posts!

Al Dhaid Fort

Al Dhaid Fort is around two hundred years old and has been restored to its former glory. Inside the fort is a fantastic museum on the history of Al Dhaid and local traditions.

Al Dhaid Fort museum entrancr

The large courtyard has towers at each corner. One of these housed the prison where unlucky criminals bided their time awaiting punishment.

Al Dhaid fort tower

Another tower contained the living quarters of the sheikh and other rooms, including stores and a madbasa, or the date press room.

Al Dhaid fort

The museum exhibits on the ground floor are in a glass-enclosed area, which allows you to enjoy the museum in a cool environment but still see the fort. This makes it a perfect place to visit in the hotter months.

Al Dhaid Fort museum is beautifully done with clear information boards. Guides are on hand to explain more about the traditions.

The courtyard has a coffee shop, a shaded seating area and a part of the old falaj, or irrigation system. Al Dhaid was a thriving community with many farms that received water from the falaj.

There is a heritage area in front of the fort and regular festivals take place here.

Al Dhaid Oasis and Souq

Opposite Al Dhaid Fort, you will see small stalls where local vendors sell goods and food during festivals. If you go behind that, you’ll find some small shops and coffee houses.

If you’ve never had camel meat and want to try it, you could drop it into Camel Burger. They have burgers, shawarma, arayes, etc., all made with camel meat and a nice indoor seating area.

To the right of the fort is Suhaila Souq, another indoor souq with cafes and shops selling spices, material, clothing and so on. Beyond that is Al Bait Al Jadeem, a large restaurant with a terrace and falaj water channels running past.

Take a walk through Al Dhaid Oasis and enjoy the tranquillity and the birds chattering. Work is still in progress but the paved area is complete on the main route. However, some of the side paths are still under construction.

Al Dhaid Oasis

On the way, you pass farms and a small mosque, Masjid Al Shari’a. After that is an optional detour to the watchtower. It’s surrounded by construction at the moment but you can still get a clear view of  the ruin atop a sand dune.

Back on the main path, further down is an outdoor cafe serving coffee, sandwiches and snacks. This is a lovely spot to sit and relax, chat with your friends or even work on your laptop. It opens daily from 4pm to 11pm. (This has since closed down.)

Continue further and follow the signs to visit Al Dhaid Old Palace, where you can see artworks on display.

This exhibition is part of the Sharjah Biennial and will be open until June 2023, however, the Old Palace will no doubt host other events in the future.

Built in the 1960s, Al Dhaid Old Palace is a simple, modern building and only worth visiting to see an exhibition or event.

If you come back in a few months, more areas will be open. There are lots of plans for the area.

You can check my walk around the oasis and Al Dhaid Museum/Fort area on Wikiloc here.

Al Dhaid Wildlife Centre

Al Dhaid Wildlife Centre focuses on life in the desert of humans and the animal and plant world.

Al Dhaid wildlife centre entrance

To avoid having disappointed children, let me point out that there is no live wildlife at this centre and it shouldn’t be confused with the Arabian Wildlife Centre on Al Dhaid Rd. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth visiting!

The centre has eight halls, each with a different focal point – Al Badia, Al Dhaid, Desert Fantasy, Desert Animals, Birds and Herbs and Insects. Each has various exhibits with information boards, interactive points, and wall-size video shows.

Al Dhaid wildlife centre exhibit

You can learn about different types of dunes, what the different types of Bedouin tents were made of and why, what the essential items for Bedouin life were, different types of plants in the area and what their popular uses were (you might be surprised!), the role of birds in their lives, biodiversity in the desert and much more.

Al Dhaid wildlife centre exhibit

You can wander around at your leisure or take a guided tour. In addition, they often have special children’s activities during occasions such as Eid (from the second day) and National Day.

Al Dhaid Wildlife Centre Opening Times

Mon–Thurs 9am–6:30pm, Fri 2–6:30pm, Sat–Sun 11–6:30pm, closed Tuesday.

Al Dhaid Wildlife Centre Entrance Fee

Adults AED 10, children under 13, resident senior citizens and PoD free.

Sharjah Safari

Sharjah Safari is another excellent addition to Al Dhaid City and opened in early 2022. The park is spread over 8 squared kms and is home to over 120 species.  It has several zones and which ticket you buy determines which zones you can enter.

sharjah safari map

For bronze tickets, it’s AED 40 (plus VAT) for 13 and above and AED 15 for 3-12 (free for 0-2). At this tier, you get entrance to the bird section and turtles only, plus an exhibition on the animals of Madagascar.

The bird section has an excellent educational interactive display. However, it took just an hour for us to finish this area.

shj safari birds

At Zanzibar Village, there is a cafe serving different types of food like burgers and so on from around 10:30 and a small restaurant serving coffee. There is also a picnic area and a play area, so if you include all that, your visit could take 2-3 hours.

If you have a silver ticket, you can continue beyond Zanzibar with the safari ride through the savannahs, etc. The silver ticket costs AED 120 for adults and AED 50 for ages 3-12.

Sharjah safari park Al Dhaid

Here you drive through a few different sections with various animals, including wildebeest, blesbok antelopes, impala and crocodiles before stopping at the safari camp. There was a nice play area, a cafe with a buffet breakfast and lunch and a nice view.

sharjah safari crocodiles

After a 45-minute stop, the journey passes white rhinos and perhaps a glimpse of the lions before moving on to the giraffe area.

sharjah safari giraffes

They come up quite close and you might see some calves. There are also elands and gazelles and in the next section, you can see the ostriches.

shj safari park

The gold ticket costs AED 275 for 13+ and AED 120 for 3-12 or 1500 for six people in a luxury car. There are other packages with a private guide. This ticket allows entry to the Serengeti Plain, where the lions and zebras live and the Niger Valley, which is home to the elephants.

shj safari

Bear in mind that when you go to other places where you see all the animals up close, it’s usually because of their restricted space. So while it may not be easy to see all the animals here, it’s partly because of the large area they have to roam rather than being kept in an inappropriate space.

Sharjah Safari Opening times

During winter months only. Daily 8:30am–6:30pm, last entry for silver and gold 2pm and bronze 4pm.

Sharjah Safari Entrance Fee

Starting from AED 40 for adults. See the pricing structure within the info above. Please note that 5% VAT is added to all ticket prices mentioned. Unlike other EPAA Shj parks, there are no ticket concessions here.

Sharjah camel racing club

Al Dhaid Camel Festival takes place in February or March and a new camel festival is also set to start in Al Dhaid Square to accompany the races in the winter of 2022/23. In 2023, Al Dhaid Camel Festival takes place from 24 to 26 February .

Published: Thu 20 May 2021, 12:30 PM

Sharjah will open the doors to the largest safari park outside Africa later this year or early next year, said a senior official.

Located near Al Dhaid, the safari park will house hundreds of different animals including giraffes, rhinos, turtles, crocodiles, pythons, flamingos, and other large reptiles, birds, and wild animals. More than a hundred animals have already arrived at the Al Bridi reserve, which will be spread over 16 sq km.

“We're developing a safari park in Sharjah, which is going to be the biggest outside Africa. The safari park will be located next to Al Dhaid city and it's going to open by the end of this year or early next year,” said Marwan Al Sarkal, executive chairman of Shurooq.

The project is jointly developed by Shurooq, the Sharjah government, and the Environment and Protected Areas Authority.

Al Sarkal said Sharjah plans diverse offerings to visitors in ecotourism, heritage, historical sightings, adventure tourism, and other sectors.

“We'll try to create an ample offering in each sector. We're not going to focus on things that our neighbouring emirates are doing. We want to complement each other,” he said on the sidelines of the four-day Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2020, which concluded at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) on Wednesday (May 19).

Al Sarkal said ecotourism in Kalba and archaeological sites in Mleiha are unique places in the UAE that residents and tourists must explore.

“You can discover the archaic sites when the first man moved from Africa to Asia and settled in Mleiha. A lot of people don’t know how man moved around the world and Mleiha gives a sneak peek into this. In Mleiha, visitors can walk through the mountains, valleys and caves as well,” he said.

There are plenty of places that residents can visit in Sharjah such as Al Montazah Waterpark, Al Majaz Waterfront, Noor Island, Rain Room and Butterfly Island, he added.

The Shurooq executive chairman also cited Khor Fakkan's attractive touristy destinations for families such as gurgling waterfalls, beaches and trekking opportunities in mountainous areas.

Shurooq is also developing a retreat and a waterpark in Khor Fakkan and a hotel and a shopping mall at Kalba.
