Come join me on an incredible Uganda Photo Safari in East Africa. The truth is that Uganda is one of my favorite countries on the planet. This is not only because of beautiful people, rich culture and diverse landscapes but because it is home to some of the most jaw-dropping wildlife experiences in the world . In Uganda, you will find the endangered Silverback Mountain Gorilla , located on the western edge of the country in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forrest . In terms of wildlife, our journey through Uganda begins in the capital city of Kampala where you will fly into the Entebbe International Airport. From there we will head North to   Kibale National Park , where we will spend a day tracking and photographing troops of wild Chimpanzees. After that, we move to Queen Elizabeth National Park , where we will enjoy a mixture of game drives and boat cruises to see more hippos, elephants, buffalo and if we are lucky, the famous tree-climbing lions of the region. The workshop ends with two back to back days in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest , where we will spend our time tracking two different large troops of Silverback Gorillas, which will be an experience you will never forget!

A GREAT question! As a professional wildlife, landscape, and travel photographer for the last 15 years, I have been very fortunate to have worked all over the globe, documenting various aspects of this beautiful planet that we live on. I have extensive experience shooting in nearly every climate you can imagine and even some you can’t 🙂 On top of this, I absolutely love teaching. I have worked for National Geographic as a photography instructor in South America and currently, I average around 10-15 workshops year after year. I am a firm believer in the organic approach I take to teaching photography, which involves a mixture of technical, philosophical, and hands-on learning that gives you the best opportunity for not only furthering your photography skills but retaining that information as you progress as an artist well after our time together has ended.

The workshop starts on July 27th, 2024 in Kampala, Uganda. This is an arrival day so you can arrive at any point during the day and we will pick you up from the airport and take you to our hotel.

The workshop ends on August 3rd, 2024 in Kampala, Uganda. We will drop you off at the airport for your flights out that day.

You will fly out of the Entebbe International Airport (EBB) in the capital city of Kamapla, Uganda.

We will abide by the rules and regulations of the Uganda government, which will be updated as we get closer to the workshop dates.

As we move around Uganda, we stay mostly at 3+ star accommodations. The rooms are comfortable and spacious, the staff is excellent, and the locations are ideal for our photographic priorities in the region.

Our adventure includes access to three major National Parks in Uganda. Bwindi with the Silverback Gorillas, Kibale with the Chimpanzees and Queen Elizabeth with the tree-climbing lions, elephants, hippo, and much more!

Because this workshop focuses on Wildlife photography, I do recommend that you bring something equivalent to a 100-400mm lens. While wildlife certainly can get closer, we try to avoid those situations as best as possible, for both the animal’s safety and ours. When it comes specifically to the Silverback Gorillas, I find a fast 70-200 f/2.8 lens usually works the best!

The truth is that you never know. There have been times where my permitted group has found Gorillas within 30 minutes of light trekking while other times it took multiple hours. A good way to support the local communities is to hire porters to not only help you carry your bag/camera gear but also help you along the paths as we move through the jungle to find the Silverbacks.

While the US and many Western countries have wide availability for the vaccine, many countries, such as Uganda, do not. While in-country we will be required to follow all COVID-19 health and safety protocols given to us as tourists from the government of Uganda. As we get closer to the workshop date, we will describe in detail what those measures will be. That said, our drivers and guides will be vaccinated that are with us throughout the duration of our adventure.

Colby Brown is a photographer, photo educator and author based out of Eastern Pennsylvania. Specializing in landscape, travel and humanitarian photography, his photographic portfolio spans the four corners of the globe and all 7 continents. Not too long after picking up his first digital camera in 2006, Colby was leading workshops for National Geographic in South America, further spurring his love for both travel and photo education. In 2011, he founded The Giving Lens , an organization that blends photo education with support for various non-governmental organizations (NGO) and causes around the world, such as child education, clean drinking water projects, and women’s rights.

No one wants to miss out on a trip of a life time…but things do happen. In those situations, the following applies…

Uganda is unique  in that it requires a  permit to see the Gorillas. Unfortunately, the $1700 deposit for this adventure is 100% non-refundable or   transferable because it is used to secure your permits to see those amazing animals. T hose permits are tied to your passport #s and therefore are not refundable or transferable.  Outside of that, all cancellations are subject to a minimum of a $150 service charge to cover PayPal transaction fees. In most situations, we ask for the remaining balance of a workshop to be paid 120 days from the start of the workshop in question. If you wish to cancel within 120 days from the start of a workshop and we find someone to fill your spot, you would be entitled to receive a refund (minus your deposit and the $150 processing fee) or transfer to another workshop with no penalties or fees .

18-Day Uganda Safari Overview

On this special Safari in Uganda, we visit all highlights that make Uganda one of the best safari destinations in Africa , including 4 great national parks to search for members of the Big Five safari animals and other interesting wildlife. 

After a good night of sleep in Entebbe and a lovely breakfast, we embark on a scenic drive to Sipi Falls in a comfortable 4x4 landcruiser. Leaving Sipi, we visit Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary; the only place in Uganda to see the rhino . Having spent a special night inside the sanctuary, we transfer to Murchison Falls National Park for a scenic hike to the Top of the Falls and have lunch on a special spot. After a boat ride to the bottom of the falls and safari game drives, we continue our journey to Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve on Lake Albert and Kibale National Park, home to many primate species. Here, we embark on a thrilling chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest . In addition, we have a wonderful swamp walk in the protected Bigodi Wetlands. 

From Kibale, we'll transfer to  Queen Elizabeth National Park , where each game drive and boat safari promises exhilarating encounters and unparalleled photographic opportunities. In Ishasha, the southern part of Queen Elizabeth, we'll search for the renowned  tree-climbing lions .

Then it's time for the most exciting part of the Uganda tour:  gorilla trekking in Bwindi . Seeing the critically endangered Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitat is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Afterwards, we will have a peaceful village walk in Rushaga and visit the Batwa Tribe . On our way to Lake Mburo, Uganda's smallest National Park, we stop at the beautiful Lake Bunyonyi  ("the Switzerland of Africa") for a light snack and photos. In Lake Mburo National Park, we'll have time to relax at the pool, enjoy the views, and go on a walking safari or game drive. Eventually, we end our trip in Entebbe, for a last boat safari in Mabamba Swamp in search of the elusive pre-historic looking Shoebill Stork; the best place in Uganda to see the Shoebill .

Photographic Tutoring  Uganda Safari

Throughout this Uganda Photo Safari , you will be guided by Kim Paffen ; Nature Guide and Travel & Wildlife Photographer featured in National Geographic Magazine and Africa Geographic. Because of the intimate small group size on our Safari Tours in Uganda, Kim can cater photography workshops to all levels of experience . 18-Day Uganda Photo Safari Itinerary + Accommodations

Day 1 - arrival entebbe airport uganda.

The journey is about to begin! You will land at Entebbe International Airport where I will personally welcome you. Together with our local driver guide, we will drive in 15 minutes to a cozy guesthouse where you will sleep the first night. Note that most arrivals in Entebbe are late in the evening, between 22.00-23.00. This means, a short night and an early start. If you would love to have a more relaxed start, you are welcome to arrive a day earlier. I'm there too and I'm happy to assist. Accommodation: Guineafowl Entebbe or Via Via Entebbe

Day 2 - Transfer to Sipi Falls

After a lovely breakfast, we will embark on a journey to the Eastern part of this beautiful country. Today is a long driving day, but with stunning views along the way, you will not get bored. We have lunch along the way, and after settling into our lodge in Sipi, a local guide will take you to a special sunset spot to view and take photos of sunset over the stunning Karamoja landscapes. Accommodation: Rafiki Lodge Sipi or Sipi Falls Lodge (both having great views of the main falls)

Day 3 - Sipi Falls Village Hike & Coffee Tour

With a local guide, you will go on a hike to Sipi Falls, consisting of a series of three prominent waterfalls, with the longest dropping of about 100 meters. You will have a chance to take photos of the falls and the beautiful lush green landscape. The area is favored by the "three-horned chameleon", so we'll keep our eyes open for this photogenic creature. Later that day, you will experience a complete Arabic coffee brewing process at a nearby rural family farm. You will pick the coffee berries, deshell, pound them and grind them with a traditional mortar and pestle. You will roast the coffee on an open wood fire, before tasting your own locally made coffee. After the coffee tour, we head back to the lodge.

Day 4 - Transfer to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Today we leave for Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. This is the only place in Uganda where you can see and photograph the endangered white rhino. This afternoon you will walk together with a ranger to track Rhinos on foot on a so-called walking safari. For 1 night, we will sleep at this special Rhino Sanctuary in a recently renovated guesthouse. This place offers chances of seeing and photographing bushbuck, warthogs & Rhinos as they roam around the Ziwa Guesthouse long after tourists left.

Day 5 - Murchison Falls National Park, Top of the Falls Hike

After breakfast, we leave for Murchison Falls National Park Uganda. In the morning, we'll go for a game drive and we'll have lunch on a very special private spot near the falls. After lunch, we have time to explore the top-of-Murchison falls where you can admire the River Nile, forced through a narrow 7m gorge, dropping 40 meters. With several amazing viewpoints, a walk to the Top of the Falls is perfect to photograph the falls from above. After this breathtaking experience, we will check into our lodge for 2 nights on a beautiful river side location. On our way to the lodge we have chances of spotting Uganda's iconic wildlife roaming the savannah plains, including elephants, giraffes, lions, hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes and maybe the elusive leopard. Accommodation: Pakuba Safari Lodge or similar

Day 6 - Safari Murchison Falls National Park

We start the day with a nice early morning game drive in Murchison Falls National Park, taking photos of wildlife or just admiring the scenes. After our safari game drive, we take an exciting boat trip on the Victoria Nile to the bottom of the falls. This boat safari is an excellent platform to see and photograph many different bird species including bee-eaters, African fish eagle, Kingfishers and African Jacana. You sail 3 hours to the bottom of Murchison Falls. After the boat trip, you have another beautiful safari game drive along the way and we're back at the lodge in time for a sundowner and watching the sunset on the river nile.

Day 7 - Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve on lake Albert

We planned 1 night in Lake Albert Safari Lodge because of the amazing views of Lake Albert and the Blue Mountains in Congo. Located in the Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve, you have chances to spot wildlife like the Ugandan Kob (Uganda's national animal), duiker, oribi, warthog, and bushbuck. At the end of your safari day, you can relax with a few drinks enjoying the sunset over Lake Albert. For the photography enthusiasts, we can take our tripods and capture a unique sunset while the fishermen are night fishing on their boats. This is a perfect way to learn how to take evening/night photos. Accommodation: Lake Albert safari lodge

Day 8 - Transfer to Kibale Forest

Today we drive in approximately 5 hours to Kibale Forest, the primate center of Uganda. On the way we have lunch in Fort Portal. The lodge where we will sleep for the next 2 days, is steps away from Kibale National Park. Kibale Forest hosts 13 primate species, including chimpanzees, baboons, black and white colobus, red colobus, grey cheeked mangabey and L’Hoest monkey. After checking into our lodge, this afternoon we have the possibility to drive up to "the top of the world" viewpoint with amazing views of the surrounding crater lakes. Weather permitting, this is a nice spot to take photos. The panoramic image I took there, is favored by many Ugandan Tour Operators and one of my best selling images. Day 9 - Chimpanzee Trekking Kibale Forest

Today we go for Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale Forest. Either in the morning or in the afternoon; this depends on the available permits. Under the guidance of rangers, you will look for one of our closest relatives, namely the chimpanzee. Once we located the chimpanzees we can spend one hour in their presence, giving us the chance to observe their behavior and photograph the chimpanzees in their natural habitat. The chimps live in a thick rainforest and they can move quickly, so the conditions for photographing this great ape species can be challenging, but I'm happy to assist with camera settings. Before or after the chimpanzee trekking in kibale, we will go on a swamp walk in the Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary. This is a nice walk through a papyrus swamp and agricultural area. On this swamp walk, there is good chance to see and photograph many different monkey species and birds Including the Great Blue Turaco; one of my favorite birds to see.

Day 10 - Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

It's time to visit Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of the highlights on this Uganda trip. We'll have photo stops around the crater lakes region and on the way, we cross the equator. In the afternoon, at 4pm, we have our first safari game drive inside Queen Elizabeth Uganda where we'll search for wildlife. We'll most likely spot Buffalo, Elephant, and various antelope species but there's also a chance to spot lions. Accommodation: Twin Lakes Safari Lodge or similar lodge with magical views over the savannah plains of Queen Elizabeth Uganda. These lodges also have a pool.

Day 11 - Safari Queen Elizabeth National Park

We start with an early morning game drive and in the afternoon (at 2pm) we'll take a boat cruise safari on the Kazinga Channel; one of the highlights in Queen Elizabeth with chances of spotting many buffalo, hippos, and elephants in or at the water.

Day 12 - Tree-Climbing Lions in Ishasha (Queen Elizabeth NP)

Today Ishasha is on the program, which is known for the tree-climbing lions. Ishasha is part of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Here, you can see lions that climb huge fig trees. In addition, they use these trees as a lookout to look for prey. We try our luck of finding them and taking photos of the lions. Accommodation: Enjojo Lodge

Day 13 - Transfer to Bwindi National Park Uganda

It's time to leave Queen Elizabeth National Park and travel on to Bwindi. On our way, we'll enjoy magnificent views of the Virunga massif. This is a chain of volcanoes located in Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo and can be viewed along the way to Bwindi. When the weather is clear, we can photograph all volcanoes including their tops. After arriving in Bwindi Forest, we settle in our Gorilla Lodge for 2 nights, only a few minutes drive to the gate from where our gorilla trekking starts. The lodge is in the middle of the forest. Being in the rainforest is very peaceful. Note that the weather conditions can change quickly. Rain showers are common but they don't last long. Accommodation: Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge

Day 14 - Gorilla Trekking Bwindi National Park

This is the day you have probably been waiting for: gorilla tracking to see the endangered mountain gorillas in the wild. In small groups of max 8 people, we will search for these gentle great apes. Of course, under the guidance of experienced rangers and porters. Once we have found the mountain gorillas, you can enjoy their presence for an hour. Unlike the chimpanzees, the Gorillas are a bit easier to photograph because they usually don't move around a lot. We'll provide all the info you need to prepare for your gorilla trekking adventure, including what to expect, what to pack for the trekking, clothing to wear and important rules. After the gorilla trekking, we drive back to our lodge and depending on the time we arrive back from our trekking, we'll have a peaceful village walk in the Rushaga area where we'll meet the villagers, including the Batwa pygmies, also known as 'keepers of the forest' who once lived inside the forest, together with the Gorillas. The Batwa now live in small settlements near the forest and they can teach us some incredible hunting techniques, or how to make fire.

Day 15 - Lake Mburo via Lake Bunyonyi and crossing the Equator

Today it's time to move on to Lake Mburo National Park. We have a short stop at Arcadia Lodge to enjoy sweeping views of Lake Bunyonyi, the Switzerland of Africa, and have a light snack. Lake Bunyonyi is known for the many small islands on the lake, including Punishment Island, were unmarried pregnant girls were sent to starve to death. We continue our drive to lake Mburo Park, where we proceed with a beautiful game drive in the park on our way to enjoy the best sunset views across the park. Lake Mburo is the smalles national park in Uganda and one of two national parks with zebras and the only park in Uganda with impalas. There are no elephants and lions, so a walking safari is a great way to get close to giraffes for a unique photographic experience. Accommodation: Rwakobo Rock or similar, including a beautiful pool with views over the savannah to relax and sip on a cocktail.

Day 16 - Safari Lake Mburo National Park

Walking safari in Lake Mburo National Park and the rest of the day you can relax at the swimming pool or participate in a photography workshop, if you wish. I'm happy to help with all questions you have and we can also look into an editing class for editing your images in Lightroom.

Day 17 - Equator Souvenir Stop & Shoebill watching Mabamba Swamp Entebbe

Today we drive on to Entebbe via Mabamba Swamp. On the way, we stop at the equator; a nice photo opportunity. Here, you can also buy souvenirs. We continue to Mabamba Swamp, one of the best places in Uganda to see the Shoebill; one of Uganda’s most sought-after bird species. Accommodation: Guineafowl Entebbe or Via Via Entebbe

Day 18 - Goodbyes & Departures (Transfer to Entebbe Airport)

Unfortunately, this is the last day of our memorable trip. As most flights out of Entebbe are later in the evening, we have another optional chance to find the shoebill in Uganda's Mabamba Swamp (if we couldn't find it the day before). Later, our driver will transfer you to Entebbe Airport for your return flight. If you'd like to extend your stay, I'm happy to help and advice accordingly.

How fit do you need to be for this Uganda trip? And is Gorilla Trekking heavy?

The journey itself is not very difficult, and anyone with a normal condition can participate in this trip. The only activity that can be tough and intensive is the Gorilla Trekking. The trekking can last two hours, but sometimes also seven hours. It depends on where the gorillas are located. If you are unsure about your fitness, we recommend you to contact us beforehand.

Uganda Safari Costs: What is the price of a safari in Uganda?

Our (custom) Uganda Safari itineraries have a comprehensive trip price covering hotels/lodges, car, transfers, driver/guides, park fees, meals, water during safari days, activities, and Photographic tutoring by Kim Paffen. While the Uganda trip price is inclusive the above elements, certain items are not inclusive of the safari trip price. Examples that are excluded are: tipping, visas, shopping, (alcoholic) drinks, travel insurance, washing clothes, and international flights.

Is tipping included in the Uganda Safari costs?

Tipping is not typically included in the price for your safari in Uganda. In Uganda, tipping is not mandatory but customary. Tips are given as a gesture of gratitude, and the amount given will depend on your satisfaction. As many first-time visitors find it challenging to gauge how much to give, here are some Uganda tipping guidelines: Safari Guide: $25 or more per day, per group. Porters (carrying luggage at lodges/hotels): $1 - $2 per porter. It is customary to give the tip at the end of the trip if you have the same guide for a few days. Tips can also be given in Ugandan Shillings.

What should I budget for a safari in Uganda (incl international flight)?

It depends if you prefer a custom-made private itinerary or if you opt for one of our scheduled Small Group Photo Safaris in Uganda, so please consider factors like flight costs, preferred (mid-range or semi-luxury) accommodations, and additional expenses for meals, tips, and shopping. Be prepared to budget between 6000 and 7000 USD for a 18-day photo safari trip in Uganda accompanied by a driver/guide and photographic guide. That budget is including flight, all meals, mid-range to semi-luxury accommodations, water in the car, park fees and all cultural activities and game drives.

Deposit & Payment Policy: What are your payment terms for a Uganda Safari Tour?

1 - We require a non-refundable USD 2250 deposit to reserve your seat on our Uganda safaris and book the Gorilla (800USD) and Chimp permits (250USD) to be sure of a spot on the trekking as they sell out quickly. Therefore, permits can only be booked and secured by having them paid in advance. 2 - Full payment (100%) due 60 days before trip departure to have a confirmed trip. 3 - Bookings made within 60 days before start of trip, must be paid in full (100%) to have a confirmed trip. 4 - You can either pay the amount in full to reduce transfer/currency costs or pay in 2 installments. The final installment has to be paid for, no later than 60 days prior to the departure date. We prefer electronic bank transfers, more information is provided when you decide to make a booking.

What is your cancellation policy for Uganda Safaris?

CANCELLATION POLICY (non-negotiable): - 2250 USD deposit is non-refundable because this amount is needed to secure your Gorilla & Chimp permit and make lodge reservations. We travel in a group so reservations are based on a set number of people. - If you cancel before August 7, the whole trip price (minus the non-refundable deposit) will be refunded. Note that If I have a new group trip planned for 2025, we can offer to transfer the non-refundable deposit to the next group trip. - If you cancel between August 7 and October 6, 50% of the total payment (minus non-refundable deposit) will be refunded - If you cancel after October 6 2024, the amount is 100% non-refundable Emergencies, although rare, can happen! Please book travel insurance (required for this trip) to keep you protected in case of unexpected emergencies. See the next FAQ about travel insurance.

Do I need a Travel Insurance for travel to Uganda (Medical/Travel/Cancellation Insurance)?

Secure a travel insurance (mandatory) before arriving in Uganda to participate in travel activities. For this trip, it's mandatory to have a travel insurance to cover emergency evacuation expenses, medical expenses, repatriation expenses, damage, theft or loss of personal baggage, money, cancellation, emergency travel and accommodation, lost baggage and any other cover the clients deems fit. Other than compulsory insurance, the decision of which insurance cover he/she obtains is solely the responsibility of the client. The client acknowledges that without such travel insurance, client will be responsible for all costs arising from any cancellation, re-routing or rescheduling of your trip or any emergency (medical or other kind) that may arise during your travels. You (client) agree that in the event of you failing to purchase adequate insurance cover, you will not hold us responsible for any harm or loss that you may suffer. Health: The client accepts that to participate in the tour requires a measure of physical fitness and health and it is the client’s obligation to ensure that he/she is medically fit to embark on the tour. What vaccinations do I need for safari in Uganda?

For vaccinations to travel to Uganda, you can visit a travel health clinic, as requirements vary by country. Recommended vaccinations for travel to Uganda include Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A, and DTP. Other diseases present in Uganda include Typhoid Fever, Hepatitis B, Tuberculosis, Rabies, and Meningitis. Consult with a knowledgeable travel medicine doctor to determine if vaccination is advisable for you. Having the "Cholera not indicated" stamp in your vaccination booklet can prevent issues at border posts.

Is there Malaria in Uganda?

Yes, Malaria is a risk throughout Uganda. There is no vaccination against malaria. We recommend the use of anti-malarial tablets. You can discuss this with a travel medicine doctor. Malaria is an infectious disease caused by malaria parasites transmitted through mosquito bites. The parasites first multiply in the liver and then in red blood cells. Symptoms include cold shivers followed by fever, often preceded by flu-like symptoms. To protect yourself from mosquito bites, bring along insect repellent containing DEET and cover your body well in the evenings. Use mosquito nets (if you wish), and bring your antimalarials. Long pants and sleeves during sunset hours will also help to avoid mosquito bites. Consult a travel clinic for personal advice regarding your travel plans.

How long must my passport be valid when traveling to Uganda?

For going on safari in Uganda, your passport must be valid for at least six months upon departing your country and possess a minimum of four blank visa pages, equating to two facing blank visa pages.

Uganda Visa: Do I need a visa to travel to Uganda and can I still get a Uganda visa on arrival?

Check the Uganda embassy or consulate requirements. All foreign nationals require a Uganda Visa. Apply for your Uganda eVisa through the official Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration . This is the only authentic Visa Application Portal for Uganda visas and it costs $50. It's very quick and simple to apply for a Uganda visa online. Initiate this process at least two weeks before departure as it typically takes approximately 10 days to complete. This is what you need: a passport copy, a recent passport-size photo, and a yellow fever vaccination certificate. You also have the possibility to apply for an East-Africa Tourist Visa (for example if you also travel to Kenya and Rwanda) or a multiple-entry visa. You can still get a Uganda visa on arrival, but that takes time and NOT the preferred way to get your visa for Uganda. I highly recommend applying for your Uganda visa online.

What to pack for this photography safari in Uganda (and Safari in Africa in general)?

Pack essentials include valid passport, visa, air tickets, expense money, inoculations, and clothing suitable for safaris. Consider traveling light with soft luggage. You should also bring a day pack to carry essentials whilst out on safari in Uganda. Bring a valid passport; be sure to check the expiry date. Also pack a photocopy of the photo page and the entry stamp page of your passport as an additional piece of identification. Please store these photo copies in a different place to your travel documents. If your passport is in a hotel safe, or if you were to lose your passport this precaution would prove invaluable. What Camera Gear should I bring for this photo safari in Uganda and included wildlife photography workshops?

Uganda offers rich photo opportunities. Carry enough memory cards, and batteries. A 200 mm (or longer) telephoto lens is very useful for wildlife photography on safari but if you're not into safari photography that much it is not a must. A wide angle lens (f/e 16-35mm) is great for photographing Uganda's beautiful landscapes.

Safari Vehicle/Transport in Uganda: What car will we use during our photo safari trip in Uganda?

During the complete Uganda safari and on game drives, you will travel in a four-wheel-drive vehicle, a safari jeep (Toyota Landcruiser), equipped with a specially made panoramic roof, allowing you to photograph or film while standing inside the vehicle. Our safari vehicles have comfortable seats, all positioned by a window so you can also spot animals while seated. You will be accompanied by a highly experienced guide and photographic tour leader.

Uganda Currency: What is the local currency in Uganda and where can I get it? Can I also pay with US Dollars or Euro?

The local currency in Uganda is the Ugandan Shilling, however, US Dollars are widely accepted. It is advisable to carry cash in US Dollars, but please note: only bills from 2003 onwards are accepted; those dated before 2003 are unfortunately not. Credit card payments are accepted in some accommodations, but substantial surcharges apply. You can withdraw money with your debit card in Uganda. However, this is only possible in the bigger cities. During the safari, there are few places where we get to an ATM. Please ensure you have enough US Dollars in cash on hand during these days.

Safety in Uganda: Is it safe to travel to Uganda?

Is Uganda Safe? Yes, it is safe to travel Uganda and the country has low crime rates. Avoid travel by road outside major towns at night (except between Kampala and Entebbe Airport). It’s better to avoid the South Sudan border region and Karamoja in the very north, but it’s definitely safe to travel to Kidepo Valley National Park, close to the border with South Sudan. If you do want to travel to these areas, consider hiring a reputable local guide. I've been traveling in Uganda a few times over the years and I felt safe at all times.

Languages in Uganda

There are 41 living languages in Uganda, but the country has only three official languages: Luganda, Swahili, and English. English has been Uganda’s official language since its independence in 1962. Luganda is the most widely spoken indigenous language and the second language alongside English. Swahili is more symbolic than functional; it's an African lingua franca and shares with English the characteristics of being the most influential trans-ethnic language in East Africa.

Sustainable Travel & Conservation: How do you give back to the Ugandan community or to wildlife conservation?

We partner with Chigo Tours and giving back is at the heart of what they do. Chigo creates a difference in local people's lives. So, how do we give back? 1. Educational support: for every booking, we donate $10 to buy a computer for girls in rural primary schools in Uganda to learn basic computer skills and get inspired. These computers are maintained by Click Uganda, a local an organization that engages volunteer travellers to teach basic computer skills in rural primary schools. 2. Welfare support: for every booking, we give a $5 donation to support orphaned children with food and basic sanitary materials for girls at Ruhija Community Orphanage School, near Bwindi. 3. By including special visits, like the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, we give back to the conservation of the endangered white rhino in Uganda. And by f/e carrying out a boat tour in Mabamba Swamp with a local fisherman, we contribute to this fishing community that indirectly conserves the Shoebill. 4. It’s our policy to encourage clients to pay extra $15 directly to local porters. that live near the park. They help us to carry backpacks or give a push/pull at sections which appear difficult to manoeuvre along the trekking trail. We encourage travelers to contribute tips to rangers who are guiding clients during the trek. Tips motivate them as they take care of primates, including gorillas and chimpanzees. Note: the payment to porters will keep them away from carrying out activities in the forests that would otherwise have a negative impact on the environment and these primates. 5. The Tour has short breaks in the program to visit local establishments, projects & innovations with opportunities to learn traditional basket weaving, joining a cooking class, and directly buying products made by f/e women. 6. We work with Lodges that employ staff from local community, have an organic approach to meals, use locally sourced products and organically grown vegetables from the community.

Mabamba Swamp is a bird lover’s paradise. Whilst the colourful African jacana and papyrus gonolek attract our attention, it is the formidable shoebill which we search for.

From the swamps to the forest, we search for primates. An experience with chimpanzees and gorillas can be incredibly powerful and the photography opportunities are exceptional as we look to capture an array of intimate portraits and images.

In the savannah and woodland of Ishasha we search for the notorious tree-climbing lions. This unusual sight to behold provides unique and exciting photographic opportunities.

Travelling in a small group of six, we have personalised tuition from Bret Charman who is experienced in photographing Uganda’s wildlife. This guidance will allow us to improve your photographic techniques and learn new skills which we can apply to the incredible wildlife sightings we are bound to encounter.

A key feature of this safari is that we have two treks for both the chimpanzees and gorillas. By doubling the time spent with these fascinating primates, we are able to balance our time between observing and photographing them. Each encounter is sure to be different which will add variety to our portfolios, and we will become increasingly confident in photographing in a lush forest environment.

Typical Itinerary

Day 1 : depart uk.

Depart from London Heathrow to Entebbe via Dubai International Airport.

Day 2 : Arrive Entebbe & transfer to hotel

On arrival in Entebbe, we transfer to our hotel and spend an afternoon at leisure.

Accommodation: Local 4-star hotel, 1-night

Day 3 : Morning photography session at Mabamba Swamp

We have an early start, heading out on to Lake Victoria in search of the bizarre shoebill in Mabamba Swamp. Using expert local guides, we hope to maximise our chances of capturing a range of images of these unusual birds. There will also be the opportunity to see a wealth of other bird species that call this area home.

We then transfer to Kibale Forest National Park .

Accommodation: Primate Lodge , 3 nights

Days 4-5 : Chimpanzee photography trekking

Each morning we head out into the forest in search of our closest relative – the chimpanzee. We can be out in the forest for a few hours as we try and track a family group. When we find the chimps, we are only allowed to spend an hour with each group, but this is more than enough time to capture an array of intimate portraits and images of these beautiful mammals in their forest surroundings. Bret will be with the group throughout, on hand to give out photographic advice and help you make the most of your time in the forest.

Afternoons will be spent relaxing at the lodge and reviewing images with Bret. On one afternoon we will have a guided nature walk through the Bigodi Wetland to enjoy the area's primate and birdlife.

Day 6 : Transfer by road to Ishasha

We transfer to Ishasha, where there may be time to head out on our first game drive this afternoon, depending on the road conditions and subsequent journey time.

Days 7-8 : Photography sessions in Ishasha and surrounding area

We have two full days to enjoy this hidden corner of Uganda, as we focus our efforts on searching for and photographing the tree-climbing lions. In recent years, the area has become relatively reliable as a place to see leopard and if we are particularly lucky, we may see one of these beautiful cats. The open savannahs and scattered trees make this the perfect place for landscape photography. We will be using open-top land cruisers to ensure we have the very best platform for photography. Each day consists of two game drives and we will make sure to maximise our time in the field. As such, we may take packed lunches with us on our safaris.

Day 9 : Morning safari drive in Ishasha and transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

This morning we have one final safari drive in Ishasha before we transfer to Bwindi .

Days 10-11 : Gorilla trekking & photography in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

We enjoy gorilla treks into the forest over two days during our stay in Bwindi. One of the benefits of being based at Buhoma is the proximity to the registration point for our gorilla trek (only a couple of hundred metres away). This morning we wake early for breakfast before making our way to the meeting point. Here we will be allocated our gorilla treks, our ranger and depending on the starting point, we may be required to drive up to an hour around the mountain.

The trek to find the gorillas can be arduous, there is no denying it, but you can take your time and the rewards are out of this world. Intimate, emotional encounters with one of the most remarkable members of the primate family are life-changing and the photography opportunities are second to none.

Day 12 : Depart Uganda

We fly by light aircraft to Entebbe where we connect with our flights back to the UK.

Uganda Elusive Wildlife Photo Safari

In the savannah and woodland of Ishasha we search for the notorious tree-climbing lions. On arrival in Entebbe, our driver will be waiting to transfer us to the hotel for overnight stay and a pre-safari briefing.

After breakfast, we head out to Nakiwogo for a boat transfer to Mabamba Swamp. The wetland hosts over 300 bird species but the Shoebill is the most sought after bird. Using expert local guides, we hope to maximize our chances of capturing a range of images of the Shoebill. There will also be the opportunity to see a wealth of other bird species that call this area home. Just 2km from Mabamba we will go on a forest walk in Nkima Forest where we will see a variety of forest bird species.

Early morning, we head out and drive to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary located in Nakasongola District. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary proudly harbors Uganda’s wild endangered rhinos. We will have a good time as we watch the rhinos at a close range as we take up close portraits.  Apart from rhinos, Ziwa is also home to a number of bird species, reptiles, and 40 mammal species. After this exciting activity, we will proceed to Amuka Lodge, for dinner and overnight stay.

Today we will set out in search of the Shoebill in the Lugogo swamp in Ziwa. Ziwa is one of the only places that we are almost guaranteed to see them. We set off on the shoebill trek at 6am. The canoe ride through the swamp at this time gives us the best opportunity to see the shoebill. But not only that, it is a fantastic way to see the beautiful Ugandan sunrise over the Lugogo Swamp. After this excursion we drive to Fortal with lunch on the way at Masindi. We will check in at Kluges Guest Farm for overnight stay.

Early morning, we head out into the forest in search of our closest relative – the chimpanzee. Unlike normal tracking of chimps, during chimpanzee habituation experience, we will spend the whole day following these amazing creatures. Chimpanzee Habituation Experience is more demanding and visitors are involved in all habituation related activities unlike the 4-hour trekking where visitors remain distant.

We will wake up early before the break of dawn to meet the guides and go looking for the chimpanzees before they leave nests. In this way, we will be able to watch them wake up and prepare for the day’s activities like feeding, resting, taking care of their young, protecting their territories and finally building their nests on top of trees. This will give us enough time to capture an array of intimate portraits and images of these beautiful mammals in their forest surroundings.

Today we head out to Queen Elizabeth Park, Uganda’s most popular savannah reserve with the widest variety of wildlife of any Ugandan park. The variety of habitats includes grassland savannah, forests, wetlands and lakes. This provides the setting for an extensive range of large mammals and primates. We have lunch at Mweya Safari Lodge then go for a boat cruise on Kazinga Channel which takes about 2hours. The water joins 2 lakes Edward and George and is filled with hippos, buffalos and elephants at the shores.  We will capture beautiful sceneries on this cruise and if we’re lucky, we may capture a beautiful sunset. After the cruise we drive back to Mweya Safari Lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Today we start with an early morning game drive within the amazing QENP, look out for the big 5 and other mammals like the Giant Forest Hog, Kobs, Hyenas, Water bucks. We will have a chance to photograph the big cats, which are easy to find because of the high population of Uganda Kobs in the area which they prey on.  After lunch, we drive to the southern section of Queen Elizabeth National Park called Ishasha and check in at Ishasha Jungle Lodge.

Accommodation: Ishasha Jungle Lodge.

We have two full days to enjoy this hidden corner of Uganda, as we focus our efforts on searching for and photographing the tree-climbing lions.  The open savannahs and the acacia and fig trees which the lions climb make this the perfect place to see them close to our vehicles offering a clear platform for landscape photography. We will be using open-top land cruisers to ensure we have the very best angles for photography.

We have an early breakfast then head into the jungle to search of wildlife including Elephants, herds of Buffaloes, antelopes, bushbucks and so many more. After lunch, we will drive to Buhoma and check in at Mahogany Springs Lodge.

Today we have a very exciting day of spending it with the endangered gorillas of Bwindi. We will have a habituation experience and not the standard trekking experience. Gorilla habituation experience is special because it allows 4 tourists a chance to spend four hours with the gorillas. The experience is managed by researchers and very experienced trackers. This is different from gorilla trekking where 8 people are assigned to each gorilla group and can only watch the primates for one hour.

We will have enough time to learn about their way of life, watch them interact, feed, build nests and groom themselves. This will provide numerous opportunities to capture intimate photos of these creatures during the time we spend with them, making it a memorable experience.

This morning we leave and drive to Lake Mburo arriving in time for lunch. In the afternoon, we set out on a sunset boat cruise on the lake. In addition to the charming scenery and simple pleasures of floating in a boat, the cruise provides good sightings of hippo, crocodile, buffalo, waterbuck, bushbuck, species of waterbirds, including the prehistoric shoebill. All these will provide beautiful sceneries for taking photos, especially with the sun setting on the horizon.

An early nature walk in the wild is deserved before we embark on the journey back to Entebbe. Lake Mburo National park is a special paradise in itself, less crowded and so rewarding to birders and nature lovers. Return to check out by 10am and drive with minimum stops to Entebbe. Enroute lunch at the Uganda Equator, then head to the Airport for an evening flight back to Nairobi.

    Lake Bunyonyi, the 2nd deepest lake in Africa is located in south-western Uganda between Kisoro and Kabale, near the border with Rwanda. Safari en Ouganda : les raisons du succès

Les animaux.

À l’instar du Rwanda , l’Ouganda est la terre des gorilles de montagne. Lors d’un trek accompagné d’un ranger, vous aurez la chance d’observer de près ces primates dans leur environnement naturel. On dénombre plusieurs dizaines de familles de gorilles de montagne en Ouganda.

À leurs côtés, on peut observer 12 autres espèces de primates, dont de nombreux chimpanzés et singes bleus répartis dans tout le pays.

À la rencontre entre la savane de l’Est africain et la jungle de l’Ouest africain, l’Ouganda est une destination où cohabitent aussi bien les primates que de nombreux animaux emblématiques de la savane.

Vous pourrez partir à la recherche du Big Five, à savoir les lions, les éléphants, les buffles, les rhinocéros et les léopards. Guépards, girafes, antilopes, impalas, zèbres, phacochères, chacals, hyènes, pour ne citer qu’eux, sont aussi présents.

Une des attractions de l’Ouganda est aussi les lions arboricoles : ils sont facilement reconnaissables à faire la sieste sur les branches des arbres !

Les parcs et les réserves

L’Ouganda compte dix parcs nationaux et un large nombre de zones protégées (aires de conservation, sanctuaires, …).

Pour rencontrer les gorilles, il faudra vous rendre dans la Forêt impénétrable de Bwindi . Classé au patrimoine de l’Unesco, le Parc de Bwindi abrite près de la moitié de la population mondiale des gorilles de montagne. On y trouve aussi une large population de mammifères ainsi que la plus grande diversité de flore à cette altitude.

Un permis est requis pour observer les gorilles afin de préserver la population de primates de l’afflux touristique. Comptez environ $700 pour le permis gorilles.

En remontant vers le nord, le Parc National Queen Elizabeth est le lieu incontournable pour partir à la recherche du Big Five, le seul où ils sont tous présents. C’est un parc digne des plus grands parcs animaliers d’Afrique dédiés aux safaris. On apprécie aussi la grande population d’oiseaux avec plus de 600 espèces.

On continue le long de la frontière ouest du pays vers le Parc national de Kibale .

C’est l’autre haut lieu de l’Ouganda pour l’observation des primates. Gorilles, chimpanzés et autres grands singes (13 espèces en tout) habitent cette forêt de montagnes.

Près du Lac Albert, le Parc National Murchison Falls abrite 76 espèces de mammifères et près de 450 espèces d’oiseaux. Les différents écosystèmes offrent des paysages variés et spectaculaires, avec notamment des chutes de 45 mètres de hauteur.

Les parcs et réserves de l’Ouganda offrent chacun des expériences uniques. Pour profiter au mieux de tous ses attraits, un circuit safari en Ouganda est la meilleure façon de visiter le pays.

Quand partir pour un safari en Ouganda ?

L’Ouganda connaît quatre saisons :

• deux saisons des pluies, de mars à mai et de septembre à novembre ;

Globalement, le climat reste agréable toute l’année en Ouganda, avec des écarts de températures relativement faibles. Il est possible de visiter le pays à n’importe quel moment. Les logements

Les offres d’hébergement en Ouganda sont principalement concentrées près des points d’attraction du pays, au Sud et à l’Ouest. Moins touristiques que ses voisins comme le Kenya et la Tanzanie , les logements sont généralement plus petits, plus intimes. Il existe quelques hébergements très luxueux, mais la plupart seront plutôt de gamme moyenne. Le confort reste malgré tout, tout à fait satisfaisant et le service chaleureux.

Préparer son safari en Ouganda

Les formalités d’entrée.

Pour pouvoir visiter l’Ouganda, vous devrez disposer :

• d’un passeport en cours de validité, valable 6 mois minimum après la date de fin de séjour et contenant au moins 2 pages vierges en vis-à-vis ;
• un visa touristique. 

Le visa pour l’Ouganda peut être obtenu en ligne et il est valable pour une durée de 90 jours. Il coûte $50 pour une entrée simple. Vous pouvez également opter pour un visa unique Kenya /Ouganda/ Rwanda au tarif de $100.

Quelques précautions sont à prendre en termes de santé avant votre safari en Ouganda.

Les recommandations de l’Institut Pasteur sont les suivantes :

• être à jour de son carnet vaccinal ;
• se faire vacciner contre la fièvre jaune : un certificat de vaccination sera exigé à votre arrivée.

Le paludisme étant présent en Ouganda, certaines mesures de prévention sont à respecter. Selon les conseils de votre médecin, vous pouvez prendre un traitement préventif antipaludique. Sur place, vous devrez vous protéger avec des vêtements couvrants, des répulsifs et des moustiquaires.

La monnaie officielle en Ouganda est le shilling ougandais (USH). Vous pouvez connaître le taux de change ici . Le dollar américain est aussi largement accepté. Les banques et distributeurs sont relativement fréquents, mais prévoyez de l’espèce si vous vous dirigez vers des zones très rurales.

Conduire en Ouganda

Un permis de conduire international est requis pour conduire en Ouganda. La conduite se fait à gauche. Les routes principales sont plutôt en bon état. Par contre, l’état des axes secondaires et des pistes est très variable. Un 4×4 est donc plus que nécessaire pour conduire en Ouganda.

Il est généralement conseillé de se faire accompagner par un guide chauffeur. Sinon, il faudra faire preuve de vigilance et de prudence pour anticiper les dangers de la route : animaux, enfants, piétons, autres véhicules, nids-de-poule, …

Les assurances

Souscrire à une assurance voyage est fortement conseillé pour un safari en Ouganda. Votre assurance doit vous couvrir pour :

• l’annulation voyage ;
• les frais de santé et d’hospitalisation ;
• les frais de rapatriement. 

Votre carte de crédit peut inclure une telle assurance, vérifiez bien les conditions. Sinon, les compagnies d’assurance classiques ou les assureurs spécialisés proposent des offres parfois plus adaptées. Passer par un comparateur en ligne est souvent un bon moyen de trouver les meilleures offres.

Le budget d’un safari en Ouganda va dépendre de vos choix de voyage. Il est possible de réaliser un safari luxueux en profitant de tout le pays mais aussi un safari pas cher en limitant les activités sur place.

ORYX Photo Tours is proud to present our Uganda Photo Safari, which takes us to some of this wonderful nation’s most thrilling wildlife destinations.

Our photo tour in Churchill’s “Pearl of Africa” begins with a search for the iconic Shoebill, a denizen of large central African swamps, and one of the world’s most sought-after birds. Onwards we go to Kibale Forest in search of our closest living relative, the Chimpanzee. Here we will amble along the gentle slopes in search of these highly intelligent creatures.

The next leg of this journey will take us to Queen Elizabeth National Park. This vast reserve boasts impressive crater scenery, expansive savannas, tropical forests and large herds of Elephant, Buffalo, Uganda Kob as well as the famed tree-climbing Lions of the region.

Our incredible photo tour ends with a visit to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to photograph the astounding Mountain Gorilla. Trekking for these primates is undoubtedly one of the world’s most thrilling wildlife experiences, and with 2 treks offered, we will have wonderful opportunities to spend time photographing and appreciating and these gentle giants, capturing an array of stories in Uganda’s legendary Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

Destination allure.

Due to its location at the “crossroads” of the central African rainforests and the savanna zone of east Africa, it is home to a huge array of primates, principally Mountain Gorilla and Chimpanzee, while savannas are home to Lion and even Leopard. Uganda as a whole sports a whopping collection of birds with the Shoebill being the standout among this list, and Uganda is a destination not to be missed!

Trekking for Great Apes

Chimpanzee Trekking – over the course of 2 Chimpanzee treks and 1 Chimpanzee habituation trek in Kibale National Park, we have the opportunity observe our closest living ancestors as they go about their daily activities. Mountain Gorilla Trekking – we will partake in 2 Gorilla treks in the beautiful Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and upon reaching the Gorillas, we will spend a maximum of 1 hour with our designated family.

Tree Climbing Lions and other Beasts

Queen Elizabeth National Park is home to an assortment of habitats and consequentially it has a huge mammal and bird list. We will cruise on the Kazinga Channel, famous for the huge aggregations of birds that line the banks alongside Buffalo, Hippo and Elephant, but will stay in the Ishasha Sector of the park, famous for its tree climbing lions. Isasha’s savannas are also home to other species including Uganda Kob, Topi, Spotted Hyaena and Leopard.

2 semaines de safari en Ouganda

Pendant des années, j’ai rêvé de réaliser un safari en Ouganda pour partir à la rencontre des gorilles des montagnes et des chimpanzés. Ce rêve est devenu réalité. Et je n’ai pas été déçu, les observations sur le terrain ont été à la hauteur de mes rêves.

Je suis parti deux semaines en Ouganda pour découvrir les parcs nationaux et les réserves du sud de la perle de l’Afrique. Deux semaines de safari où l’observation et la photographie des primates et des oiseaux ont été au cœur du voyage. Je vous embarque dans ma valise ? Voici le récit de mon voyage. Il est 22h30 lorsque l’avion se pose sur le tarmac de l’aéroport d’Entebbe. Nous passons les formalités Covid-19 avec une rapidité inattendue. Nous faisons un test PCR, obligatoire à l’arrivée et au départ d’Ouganda au moment de notre voyage, et obtenons les résultats quatre heures plus tard par email et WhatsApp. A ce moment là, nous dormons profondément dans notre hôtel à Entebbe.

1 er safari dans le parc national du lac Mburo

Après un transfert en 4×4 d’environ 5h, nous nous installons au Rwakobo Rock Lodge à l’entrée du parc national du lac Mburo. Le parc national n’était pas sur notre liste des incontournables en Ouganda mais permet de faire une halte intéressante et d’éviter des transferts trop longs. On y a fait deux safaris : un l’après-midi après notre arrivée sur le site et un autre le lendemain matin avant notre poursuite du voyage.

Aussi étrange que cela puisse paraître, le parc national du lac Mburo, d’une superficie de 256 km², est l’unique parc en Ouganda où observer l’impala et le seul avec Kidepo pour le zèbre des plaines et l’éland du Cap. Le cobe de fassa, le guib harnaché et le phacochère sont communs. On peut aussi y observer la girafe Rothschild et le topi.

J’ai trouvé le parc national plus intéressant pour les oiseaux que pour les mammifères. Plus de 310 espèces d’oiseaux ont déjà été observées. Le martin-chasseur du Sénégal, le martin-pêcheur pie ou encore le francolin à gorge rouge qu’on ne trouve que dans le sud du pays sont communs. J’ai pu faire de très belles observations de rapaces et d’ombrettes africaines.

A la rencontre du gorille des montagnes dans le parc national mgahinga.

Après un transfert en voiture vers le lac Mulehe, nous nous sommes installés sur le bord du lac. Les chalets du lodge donnaient sur le plan d’eau. Un magnifique décor. Depuis la terrasse de mon chalet, j’ai pu observer le martin-pêcheur huppé et le martin-pêcheur pie en chasse, des pêcheurs ainsi que des loutres à cou tacheté dont le statut IUCN est alarmiste puisque l’espèce est classée « quasi menacée ». C’est l’une des deux loutres qu’on trouve en Ouganda.

Les deux jours suivant, équipé de mes bottes de randonnée en caoutchouc, j’ai arpenté à pied le parc national Mgahinga, le plus petit d’Ouganda (37 km²), pour en découvrir ses trésors. La première matinée, j’ai réalisé une randonnée éprouvante à la rencontre du singe doré, une espèce de cercopithèque endémique aux volcans de Virunga à cheval sur le Rwanda, la République démocratique du Congo et l’Ouganda. On peut dire que j’ai bien transpiré cette matinée là. La même journée, j’ai enchaîné avec une autre randonnée, ornithologique cette-fois-ci pour observer et photographier les oiseaux endémiques du rift Albertin comme le tisserin de montagne ou le souimanga royal. Une journée bien remplie, exténuante mais pleine de surprise comme je les aime.

Le second jour dans le parc national Mgahinga était consacré à la rencontre avec les gorilles de montagne. Les voyageurs en Ouganda ont plutôt tendance à aller les observer au parc national Bwindi mais un groupe de gorilles à Mgahinga accepte la présence de l’Homme. Quel moment incroyable avec le groupe Nyakagezi composé de 9 gorilles : trois dos argentés, un mâle adulte (qui n’est pas encore silverback), deux enfants, deux femelles adultes et un juvénile. C’est sûr, voir les gorilles des montagnes coûtent cher. 700$ par personne pour rester une heure à leur contact c’est un budget conséquent mais l’expérience est unique. Je ne peux que la recommander aux amoureux de la nature qui ont les moyens et l’envie de rencontrer les gorilles des montagnes.

Safari et croisière dans le parc national Queen Elizabeth

Toujours en 4×4, nous partons vers le nord rejoindre le parc national Queen Elizabeth. Nous entrons par le sud et le secteur d’Ishasha réputé pour l’observation de lions dans les arbres. Nous n’en verrons pas. Le mois de novembre n’est vraiment pas la meilleure période pour observer les mammifères dans le parc national. On s’en rendra compte mais nous avons quand même pu faire de belles observations les jours suivants dans le secteur des plaines de Kasenyi où nous avons pu observer des cobes d’Ouganda en grande nombre sur leur lek, des cobes de fassa, des topis, un léopard, des lions.

A cette époque de l’année, le parc national est par contre extrêmement intéressant pour l’observation des oiseaux, en safari à bord du 4×4 ou en croisière sur le Kasinga Channel. Il faut dire que le parc national Queen Elizabeth comptabilise plus de 600 espèces d’oiseau, soit autant qu’en France alors que sa superficie est 275 fois plus petite. Voici quelques espèces que j’ai apprécié observer et photographier : veuve dominicaine, bec-en-ciseaux d’Afrique, martin-pêcheur pie, cisticole de Woosnam, vautour palmiste, vanneau du Sénégal.

4 heures avec les chimpanzés du Parc national Kibale

Le voyage en Ouganda se poursuit toujours plus vers le nord. Nous mettons le cap vers la petite ville de Bigodi en bordure du parc national Kibale, un des hots spots pour l’observation des chimpanzés. Après avoir déposé nos affaires au superbe Turaco Treetops Lodge qui domine la canopée, nous partons découvrir une première fois à pied le marais de Bigodi en compagnie d’un ornithologue local. Le site est réputé pour l’ornithologie et les primates. La progression n’est pas simple en saison des pluies même avec des bottes. De cette première sortie,  je n’ai aucune photo. J’ai malencontreusement écrasé le contenu de ma carte mémoire. Fort heureusement, je n’ai pas reproduit l’erreur une seconde fois en y retournant. Les marais de Bigodi sont propices à l’observation de plusieurs espèces de primates : le colobe guéréza, colobe bai, cercopithèque ascagne ou encore le très discret cercopithèque de l’Hœst. Plus de 200 espèces d’oiseaux peuvent y être rencontrées dont les touracos : le touraco géant, le touraco de Ross et le touraco à queue barrée.

L’autre moment très attendu de ces deux semaines de safari en Ouganda, c’était l’exploration de la forêt du parc national de Kibale à la rencontre des chimpanzés. Nous avions opté pour une session d’habituation dont la durée avec le groupe de chimpanzés dure 4h au lieu des 1h lorsqu’on réserve pour un tracking . La différence de tarif n’était pourtant pas si énorme : 250$ par personne d’un côté contre 200$ de l’autre. Comme pour les gorilles des montagnes, l’expérience a dépassé mes attentes. C’était juste incroyable d’être à leur contact à moins de 10 mètres. Tantôt ils étaient dans les arbres mangeant des fruits, tantôt au sol s’épouillant, se reposant tout en prenant des pauses non sans rappelées des attitudes humaines. Là encore, venir en Ouganda sans vivre cette expérience serait un crime de lèse-majesté.

3 jours de safari au parc national Murchison Falls

Le voyage en Ouganda se poursuit toujours plus au nord dans le parc national Murchison Falls . On s’installe à la nuit tombée au Murchinson River Lodge en bordure du Nil.

Les deux jours suivant, nous avons exploré le parc national en bateau ainsi qu’en 4×4. C’est un sanctuaire animalier très intéressant pour la diversité de sa faune. En 4×4, nous avons découvert les secteurs de Paraa, Pakuba et Buligi. En bateau, nous sommes partis de notre lodge jusqu’au delta du Nil.

Les mammifères les plus fréquemment observés sont le cobe d’Ouganda, l’oribi, le bubale de Jackson, le buffle, l’hippopotame, la girafe de Rothschild, le singe patas et l’éléphant dont on trouve ici de grands troupeaux. Mais on a aussi pu faire de très bonnes observations de lions et de léopards.

Les oiseaux ne sont pas en reste avec plus de 450 espèces observables. Le parc national Murchison Falls est un bon spot pour le pygargue vocifère, le martin-chasseur du Sénégal, le guêpier écarlate mais aussi le bucorve d’Abyssinie. Le bec-en-sabot du Nil peut se rencontrer mais nous n’avons pas eu cette chance. Inutile de vous citer tous les oiseaux observés, je vais écrire des articles spécifiques sur ce parc national (comme pour les autres d’ailleurs).

Approche à pied des rhinocéros blancs au Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Le voyage en Ouganda commence à toucher à sa fin. Tout doucement, nous reprenons la route vers la capitale Kampala. En route, nous faisons un arrêt au Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary pour approcher les rhinocéros blancs à pied. Ziwa est un sanctuaire de 7000 hectares qui accueille une trentaine de rhinocéros. Ils sont surveillés jour et nuit par une équipe de rangers. C’est le seul sanctuaire animalier en Ouganda avec une population de rhinocéros.

On peut y dormir mais nous n’y sommes que passé en fin de matinée à des heures moins propices à des observations intéressantes car il commençait à faire bien chaud et les rhinocéros rencontrés étaient le plus souvent allongés à l’ombre d’un arbre. Préférez venir tôt le matin ou en fin de journée.

Le soir même, nous sommes à notre hôtel sur le bord du lac Victoria.

Le bec-en-sabot du Nil dans le marais de Mabamba et les jardins d’Entebbe

C’est déjà le dernier jour de mes 2 semaines de safari en Ouganda. Mais avant de prendre l’avion, je pars découvrir le marais de Mabamba en barque situé à un peu plus d’une heure de route. Avec du recul, j’aurais préféré prendre un lodge près du marais de Mabamba.

Le marais de Mabamba est réputé pour être l’un des meilleurs spots en Ouganda pour observer le bec-en-sabot du Nil. C’était clairement l’objectif de cette sortie. Cet échassier aux allures préhistoriques peut faire penser à un mélange de cigogne, de pélican et de héron mais c’est bien la seule espèce du genre Balaeniceps . Mission réussie, j’ai pu observer pour la première fois cet oiseau incroyable et dans de bonnes conditions.

Il me restait du temps à tuer avant de prendre mon vol à 23h30. Je suis donc allé traîner mes basques au jardin botanique d’Entebbe. Plus d’une vingtaine d’espèces d’oiseaux observées en moins de deux heures. Une façon de dire au revoir à ce beau pays qu’est l’Ouganda. Je reviendrai, promis.

Où dormir ?

Voici les références des hôtels et lodges de mon voyage. Ils se classent dans la catégorie moyenne gamme (3 étoiles norme locale) :

• The Boma Hotel  : Situé au calme près de l’aéroport avec un joli jardin fréquenté par de nombreux oiseaux. Piscine. Excellent petit-déjeuner. Accueil chaleureux.
• Rwakobo Rock Lodge : Lové sur une colline à l’entrée du parc national du lac Mburo, le lodge est animé par une atmosphère sympathique et décontracté. L’équipe n’y est pas pour rien. Bonne table. Piscine.
• Lake Muhele Safari Lodge : Tous les cottages en pierre donnent sur le lac Muhele. Vaste chambre. Equipe très sympathique. On y mange bien aussi. A 45 mn de l’entrée du parc national Mgahinga.
• Queen Elizabeth Bush Lodge  : Bush camp disposant de toiles de tente qui donnent sur le Kazinga Channel du parc national Queen Elizabeth. Non clôturé, le lodge est fréquenté régulièrement par les éléphants, les hippopotames et de nombreux oiseaux. Bonne table. Service un peu lent.
• Turaco Treetops Lodge : Très beau lodge près du parc national Kibale. Magnifique et grande chambre avec une terrasse ouverte sur la canopée. Piscine. Excellente table. Personnel au petit soin. La meilleure adresse du voyage.
• Murchison River Lodge : Lodge dans le parc national Murchison Falls le long du Nil qui comprend des hébergements pour tous les budgets, du camping au cottage en toit de chaume en passant par la tente de safari. Excellente table. Piscine.
• Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary  : Nous n’y avons pas dormi mais cela est une option à envisager.
• Kaazi Beach Resort  : Hôtel avec une vue imprenable sur le lac Victoria. Piscine. Bonne table. Restaurant et bar fréquentés par les locaux. Un peu bruyant. Si vous aimez le calme, passez votre chemin.

Quand faire un safari en Ouganda ?

Quand partir en Ouganda pour un safari ? Pas facile de répondre à cette question car le pays se trouve à la lisière entre l’Afrique de l’est et l’Afrique centrale avec des écosystèmes très variés allant de la jungle tropicale d’altitude à la savane en passant par les marais.

Il y a deux périodes pour la saison sèche : de juin à septembre et de décembre à février. Mais voyager en saison des pluies est possible. C’est d’ailleurs ce que j’ai fait (en novembre).

Vous êtes ornithologue ? L’Ouganda est fait pour vous avec près de 1100 espèces d’oiseaux dans un pays dont la surface est inférieure de moitié à celle de la France. Préférez la période de novembre à avril qui compte une plus grande diversité d’espèces avec la présence des oiseaux migrateurs.

Livres et guides d’observation et de voyage

• Guides de voyage : Les références en français sont peu nombreuses. Je peux citer le Petit Futé . Mais si vous parlez l’anglais, je vous recommande vivement l’édition Bradt bien plus complète.
• Guides pour la faune : Birds of East Africa: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi , la référence en ornithologie en Ouganda et en Afrique de l’Est. Pour les mammifères en Afrique, voici deux références en français : Guide photo des grands mammifères d'Afrique et Mammifères d'Afrique . Pour les reptiles, optez pour Field Guide to East African Reptiles .

Quel voyage magnifique ! J’avais adoré l’Ouganda, un rêve que je n’imaginais pas qu’il était possible de réaliser (notamment la rencontre avec les gorilles) et un voyage dont je me souviendrais toute ma vie bien que beaucoup trop court (malheureusement pas le budget pour rester plus qu’une semaine). La biodiversité est tellement incroyable c’est vraiment dingue, que ce soit la rencontre avec les Gorilles ou bien les safaris dans les Parcs Nationaux !! Comme d’habitude tes photos sont magnifiques !

Je ne vois pas un amoureux de la nature être déçu de l’Ouganda. Le pays est tellement unique par sa biodiversité et les espèces qu’il recense. Pas étonné donc que tu es adoré. C’est aussi mon cas. Et je suis ravi de maintenant pouvoir encadrer des voyages photo en Ouganda. Tellement hâte d’y retourner.

Bonjour, Merci pour ce très beau récit. Nous envisageons un voyage en Ouganda cette année, mais avons du mal à trouver des infos sur les restrictions Covid. En particulier, on parle de PCR avant le départ, et avant les sorties gorilles, où avez vous fait ces test? Merci d’avance,

Au moment de mon voyage en novembre 2021, il fallait avoir un test PCR négatif de moins de 72h00 avant d’arriver en Ouganda, faire un test PCR à l’arrivée à l’aéroport (résultat dans les 6h00 lorsque vous êtes à l’hôtel) puis nouveau test PCR avant de sortir du pays. Pas d’autres tests à faire. Pour les sorties primates, il fallait porter le masque en présence des gorilles, chimpanzés et singes dorés. Ces mesures pouvant changer avec l’évolution de la pandémie, il faut soit les vérifier auprès de votre agence de voyage ou auprès de https://www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/fr/conseils-aux-voyageurs/conseils-par-pays-destination/ouganda/ si vous êtes français résidant en France.

La plus grande population de gorilles de montagne au monde se trouve dans le parc national de la forêt de Bwindi . Outre le trekking des gorilles , vous pouvez participer à une expérience exclusive d’habituation des gorilles : une journée complète avec les gorilles pour un coût de 700 USD. Bwindi se prêt aussi parfaitement à l’observation des oiseaux en forêt, des promenades dans la nature ainsi que des expériences culturelles. Il s’agit sans doute la zone la plus diversifiée sur terre en termes de diversité biologique, avec non seulement la moitié de la seule population mondiale des gorilles de montagne (une espèce en voie de disparition). La forêt impénétrable de Bwindi est incontestablement une destination incontournable sur le continent africain.

2. PARC NATIONAL DE LA FORÊT DE KIBALE, POUR UN TREK AVEC LES CHIMPANZEES

Le trek avec les chimpanzés se fait en suivant les traces des primates : les guides vous éclaireront sur les chemins à emprunter en analysant les indices laissés par les chimpanzés (comme leurs empreintes de pas, les excréments, etc.).

Environ 1’500 chimpanzés se trouvent dans le parc national de la forêt de Kibale, située près de la ville de Fort Portal dans la partie occidentale de l’Ouganda, à l’est des monts Rwenzori. La forêt tropicale recouvre 766 km2, avec une altitude comprise entre 1100 et 1600 m. Ce parc rejoint le parc national de Queen Elizabeth. Le parc national de Kibale est une référence pour le trekking des chimpanzés, mais ces primates peuvent aussi être aperçus dans la forêt de Budongo dans le parc national de Murchison Falls et également dans la gorge de Kyambura dans le parc national Queen Elizabeth.

3. PARC NATIONAL DE QUEEN ELIZABETH – SAFARI EN OUGANDA

Le parc national de Queen Elisabeth est de loin la réserve la plus pittoresque et la plus visitée d’Ouganda. Le parc abrite une grande variété d’animaux et de paysages qui lui confèrent un aspect unique (savane, différents arbres et plaines, marécages, formations volcaniques et cratères, forêts tropicales, etc.).

Le parc national de Queen Elizabeth est un endroit idéal pour observer le gros gibier, mais aussi les oiseaux (612 espèces sont recensées dans le parc), les hippopotames dans le canal de Kazinga, ou les chimpanzés dans les gorges de Kyambura. 4. PARC NATIONAL DE LA VALLÉE DE KIDEPO

Kidepo National Park compte 77 sortes de mammifères, ce qui en fait l’un des meilleurs parcs nationaux en Afrique. De plus, plus de 475 espèces d’oiseaux sont recensées. Dans la région, vous pourrez également rencontrer le peuple Karamojong, vous promenez dans les montagnes de Lomej, la vallée de Namamkweny ou encore les montagnes de Morungole.

Bien que reculé, le parc de la vallée de Kidepo est une véritable pépite de la nature ougandaise, avec ses superbes paysages de savane et des montagnes en arrière-plan. Situé à une altitude de 900m à 2’750m, il couvre une superficie de 1’442 km2. Peu fréquenté en raison de sa position éloignée de Kampala et des autres parcs, le nombre de visiteur s’élève en moyenne à six visiteurs par jour. Un vrai joyau sauvage !

5. PARC NATIONAL DE MURCHISON FALLS (OUGANDA SAFARI)

Murchison Falls National Park est la plus grande zone de conservation en Ouganda, couvrant une superficie de plus de 3’840 km2. Le parc tire son nom de sa célèbre cascade : les chutes de Murchison. Ces chutes d’eau sont formées par le Nil Victoria, qui passe à travers une fente étroite avant de faire un plongeon de 43 m. Ces chutes forment la pièce maîtresse du parc, et c’est également l’endroit le plus visité. En bonus, vous aurez la chance de visiter l e sanctuaire des rhinocéros de Ziwa, l’unique endroit où vous pouvez observer ces créatures fascinantes en Ouganda, sur le chemin pour vous rendre à Murchison Falls .

6. PARC NATIONAL DU LAC MBURO (VOYAGE EN OUGANDA)

Le parc national du Lac Mburo est l’un des plus petits parcs animaliers d’Ouganda, mais certainement pas inintéressant. Ce petit parc est en effet très riche en faune et flore : il recense des oiseaux en abondance, avec plus de 315 espèces différentes, ainsi qu’une variété animale riche avec 68 mammifères différents comme des impalas, des léopards, des buffles, des chacals et des hyènes. Sans oublier que c’est un des seuls endroits où vous pourrez voir des zèbres en Ouganda. Lac Mburo National Parc est vaut incontestablement la peine d’être visité lors de votre safari en Ouganda.

7. SIPI FALLS (OUGANDA SAFARI)

Les chutes de Sipi sont sans doute les cascades les plus saisissantes d’Ouganda. Situées dans les contreforts du Mont Elgon et surplombant une vaste plaine, les chutes d’eau ont trois niveaux différents, tous d’une beauté indescriptible, même si c’est la cascade principale de 95 mètres qui attire particulièrement les visiteurs. Passer une nuit ou deux dans cet endroit spectaculaire et paisible est une expérience à ne pas manquer.

8. LAC BUNYONYI

Le lac Bunyonyi est très probablement le plus beau lac d’Ouganda. Ses 29 îles sont par la plupart habitées et aménagées en terrasses pour l’agriculture. Faites un tour en barque est amusez-vous à observer les écoliers se rendant à l’école en pirogues dans la brume matinale. Ici, les brumeuses montagnes des Virunga en arrière-plan et les marécages de papyrus vous offriront des décors merveilleux pour des randonnées. Le lac Mutanda est aussi parfait pour les fans d’ornithologie et offre de nombreuses activités nautiques.

10. TREKKING DANS LES MONTAGNES RWENZORI

Durée du safari : 6 jours

L’impressionnante chaîne de montagnes Rwenzori est située à la frontière entre l’Ouganda et la République Démocratique du Congo (RDC) et s’étend sur environ 110 km de long. Son plus haut sommet enneigé, le pic Margherita, culmine à 5’109 m. Le site, classé au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO, comprend des paysages très variés et à couper le souffle. Vous découvrirez des décors uniques, comme l’étrange lande afro-alpine, l’épaisse végétation tropicale sur les pentes montagneuses, ou encore quelques-unss des glaciers les plus hauts de l’hémisphère sud.

11. RANDONNÉE AU PARC NATIONAL DU MONT ELGON

Le parc du Mont Elgon se situe à la frontière entre le Kenya et l’Ouganda. La montagne Elgon a de loin la plus grande superficie de tout volcan éteint au monde, avec une caldeira qui couvre plus de 40 km2 à son sommet. C’est aussi la deuxième plus haute montagne d’Ouganda après la montagne Rwenzori : son plus haut sommet, Wagagai, culmine à 4’321 m d’altitude.

12. ESCAPADE AUX ÎLES SSESE

Les îles Ssese sont un archipel luxuriant de 84 îles, situées le long de la rive nord-ouest du lac Victoria . Les superbes plages de sable blanc font des îles Ssese un endroit idéal pour se détendre, profiter de la beauté du lac et du calme pour lire un bon livre et vous reposer après votre safari en Ouganda. Si vous en avez assez de lézarder au soleil, vous pourrez profiter d’une balade en canoë. En revanche, la baignade est déconseillée en raison des risques de bilharziose et des visites occasionnelles d’hippopotames ou de crocodiles sauvages. 13. PARC NATIONAL DE SEMULIKI

Le parc national de Semuliki s’étend sur 220 km². Cette vallée fait le lien entre les hauteurs des immenses jungles d’Afrique centrale et d’Afrique de l’Est. Le parc est célèbre pour sa faune intrigante, ainsi que les sources chaudes de soufre qui peuvent être repérées lors d’une courte journée de marche.

14. VOYAGE SUR LE LAC VICTORIA

En plus d’être le principal réservoir du Nil, le lac Vicitoria est aussi le plus grand lac d’Afrique et le deuxième plus grand lac d’eau douce au monde. La période Juin-août est le pic de la saison sèche. C’est à ce moment que les herbes épaisses seront devenues brunes et desséchées, ce qui permet de repérer plus facilement les animaux à distance. C’est aussi la période idéale pour l’observation des oiseaux.

Cela dit, vous pouvez vous rendre en Ouganda à tout moment de l’année. Les températures moyennes sont aux environs de 24°C à 30°C durant toute l’année ; le climat est donc généralement chaud.

COMBIEN COÛTE UN SAFARI EN OUGANDA EN 2024 -2025 ?

Si vous êtes curieux du budget à prévoir, essayons de calculer les coûts ensemble. Un permis pour un trek avec les gorilles en Ouganda coûte 800 USD par personne pour la saison 2024-2025. L’hébergement varie de 150 USD à 900 USD selon l’endroit où vous choisissez de rester. Cela dit, un safari de 3 jours à Bwindi pour observer les gorilles devrait coûter environ 1200 USD par personne (entrée de gamme). Flooding Inundates Kenya, Killing at Least 32 and Displacing Thousands

Days of torrential rains have pummeled parts of Kenya, leaving at least 32 dead, 15 injured and more than 40,000 people displaced, according to officials. The flooding has killed nearly 1,000 farm animals and destroyed thousands of acres of crops, with more rain expected across the country in the coming days.

The rains began in March during what is known in the country as the “long rains,” but intensified over the past week, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department .

Heavy rains have also pounded other nations across East Africa. In Tanzania, at least 155 people were killed and 236 others injured from the relentless rain that has swept several parts of the country in recent days, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said on Thursday.

The rains affected some 200,000 people, Mr. Majaliwa added, and caused damage to farms, bridges, roads, schools and places of worship. The Tanzania Meteorological Authority warned that heavy rains and strong winds would continue to pummel several towns and cities, including the port city of Dar es Salaam.

In Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, where some of the country’s heaviest rain has fallen, more than 30,000 people have been displaced, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs . On Tuesday, 18 people there were stranded and later rescued, including seven children, the Kenya Red Cross Society said.

Edwin Sifuna, the Nairobi County senator, said on social media that the local government there was “clearly overwhelmed,” and he called on the federal government for help.

“The situation in Nairobi has escalated to extreme levels,” he wrote in a post that included a video of people stranded on rooftops surrounded by floodwaters.

Kithure Kindiki, cabinet secretary for the Interior Ministry, said in a social media post on Thursday that several government agencies were beginning a joint operation to assist the victims, conduct rescues and evacuate those who remain at risk.

The heavy rains on Wednesday forced Kenya Railways to suspend commuter train services. The Kenya Urban Roads Authority also partially closed four major roads in Nairobi and warned of heavy flooding along several major highways in the capital and in the coastal city of Mombasa.

The rains were not expected to subside over the next few days, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department, which had rain in the forecast for parts of the country, including Nairobi, through Monday. The agency also warned of a high likelihood of breakouts of diseases such as malaria and diarrhea in some areas.

The latest downpours come just months after torrential rains and floods killed dozens of people and displaced thousands more nationwide.

Is 10 days a good amount of time for a trip in Uganda?

“Many people would regard 10 days to be the ideal duration for a Uganda safari. It is sufficient to cover all the main national parks in Uganda’s varied western circuit in a reasonably unrushed manner, but not so long that you can’t tag a beach or other extension to your holiday. Having said that, if you plan to cover the western circuit in full, from the southwestern gorilla trekking reserves to the more northerly Murchison Falls NP, you might consider allocating a couple more days. Extending your itinerary, for instance to 12 days, would allow you to do more activities and fit in more downtime between days dominated by driving from A to B.”

Where should I go on a 10-day safari in Uganda?

“The most popular 10-day Uganda safari itinerary loops from the capital Kampala (or nearby Entebbe International Airport) through the far west. This loop can be covered in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction, neither of which has a strong advantage over the other. However, given that many people are quite stressed about gorilla trekking (how tough will it be and will they definitely see gorillas?), clockwise is possibly preferable as it allows you to do this activity close to the start of your holiday. Following the loop in a clockwise direction, it’s worth spending a night at Lake Mburo NP, which is home to giraffe, zebra and plenty of different types of antelope. Your next stop is almost certain to be at either Bwindi Impenetrable or Mgahinga Gorilla NP, the two places in Uganda that offer gorilla trekking excursions. From here, you can head north to Queen Elizabeth NP, possibly doing a game drive in the Ishasha sector to search for tree-climbing lions, and almost certainly taking a boat out onto the wildlife-rich Kazinga Channel. If you want to track chimps, this can be done in Kalinzu Forest or Kyambura Gorge, both of which border Queen Elizabeth, or further north in Kibale NP. Further north still, Murchison Falls NP is flowed through by the mighty Nile River and offers a great combination of game drives and boat trips. On the drive back to Kampala, a day visit or overnight stop at the excellent Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch is recommended.”

Which animals can I expect to see?

“Although there are no guarantees on any safari, Uganda is one of only two African countries where all the Big Five can be seen alongside gorillas and chimps. In some instances – most obviously gorilla, chimp and rhino – the probability of a sighting is dependent on doing a specific trekking activity in a suitable location. In the case of gorillas and rhinos, the trekking success rate is all but 100%. And while the rate for chimp trekking is slightly lower, a 10-day itinerary should allow an opportunity to try again should you miss out on your first attempt. As for the rest of the Big Five, you’re almost certain to see elephant, buffalo and, to a lesser extent, lion on game drives and boat trips in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls. Paradoxically, while leopards are the most widespread of the Big Five in Uganda, they are also the most elusive, but lucky visitors might encounter one in Lake Mburo, Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls. Avoid the trap of getting too hung up on the Big Five. Uganda supports a huge variety of other less glamorous wildlife, and a 10-day safari should provide you with opportunities to see giraffe, zebra, warthog, hippo and numerous different antelopes and monkeys. The birdlife is incredible too. A dedicated bird-watcher might tick 300 bird species on a 10-day safari, and casual visitors will be blown away by the conspicuous likes of grey crowned crane, marabou stork and African fish eagle.”

What are the options to extend my 10-day Uganda trip?

“That depends on what you’re looking for. A great add-on for active travelers is rafting the white waters of the Nile upriver of its source near Jinja. If you’re looking for something a bit more chilled, Bunyonyi is a beautiful highland lake lined with low-key budget and mid-range resorts. For a more conventional beach holiday, Uganda’s inland location means that it lacks a coastline, but the lovely Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar, offshore of neighboring Tanzania, is only a short flight away.”

How much will a 10-day Uganda safari cost?

“The typical price of a 10-day budget or mid-range tour in western Uganda is around US$2,500 to US$4,000 per person. This will usually be inclusive of gorilla and chimp trekking permits, other national park fees and activity costs, as well as all accommodation, meals and road transport, and the services of drivers and guides as required. The main variable in the price range will be down to the quality of accommodation, which ranges from simple campsites to smart mid-range hotels, lodges and tented camps. If your safari uses domestic flights, includes a second gorilla trekking excursion, and/or offers accommodation at the top end of the luxury scale, the price is likely to be upwards of US$4,500.”
