Not to be dramatic, but losing a passport or other travel documents can be a huge nightmare while traveling. To safeguard passports, credit cards, and boarding passes, we recommend using a passport wallet to keep everything organized in one spot.

We researched and tested 16 passport wallets in various sizes and materials to recommend options that fit the needs of all types of travelers. We paid close attention to traits like capacity, durability, functionality, and organizational features to ensure smooth travels. Keep reading to find out which ones surpassed our expectations during testing.

Best Overall

Leatherology zip around travel wallet.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

The exterior zipper adds an extra layer of security to keep passports and credit cards safe while traveling.

It might be too large to fit in a smaller purse or sling bag .

While most passport wallets we tested have a snap-closure, this one has a zipper that wraps around the entirety of the wallet to ensure a passport and other travel essentials remain safely tucked away in transit. The versatile design is so spacious that it can easily hold multiple passports, up to eight credit cards, cash, and coins without feeling bulky or cumbersome to carry. There’s even an exterior pocket for boarding passes so you don’t have to open up the wallet for access. It might be too big to fit in small purses, but the sleek leather look and larger size makes it possible to carry it as a clutch or place into a backpack or tote bag, if needed.

Bellroy RFID Travel Wallet

The wallet easily fits in a back pocket.

The wallet will be bigger if it’s packed full and may not fit then.

Minimalist travelers will appreciate the sleek and simple design of Bellroy’s RFID Travel Wallet. We dubbed it our favorite slim option since it can fit virtually anywhere, including in a back pocket (just be sure to take it out of your pocket before going through security). Made out of a soft and durable leather, it never scuffed or scratched while traveling and it looks premium on the outside. The wallet has pockets for a passport, cash, credit cards, and plane tickets, and we love that there aren’t so many pockets that items get disorganized or lost in the void. The best part is that it opens like a standard wallet so we could quickly grab our passports and credit cards while traveling.

Best for Families

Valante travel document organizer.

  • Ease of Use 4.5 /5

It has pockets for multiple passports, plane tickets, and cash.

The large capacity might be too big for solo travelers.

Family travel can be hectic, so we recommend this spacious wallet that can keep all of your family’s important documents in one safe spot. Designed to store multiple passports, credit cards, plane tickets, and more, there are tons of pockets to place items neatly. There’s even a key leash, two zippered pockets, a pen holder, and two designated slip pockets for boarding passes in the front of the wallet. Because the wallet is on the larger side, we love that it comes with a wrist strap to hold onto it while going through customs or the TSA security line. The size might be too large for solo or minimalist travelers, but it works perfectly for staying organized while traveling in groups.

Best Faux Leather

Melsbrinna waterproof rfid-blocking travel wallet.

The PU leather material feels just as soft and durable as regular leather.

The clear plastic window pockets could scratch over time.

Similar to our overall pick, this passport wallet isn’t made out of genuine leather, but it has the same premium look and feel. Made with layers of PU leather, there is a piece of RFID-blocking fabric sandwiched between the material for extra protection while traveling with chipped documents. This sleek wallet comes with all of the standard pockets for a passport, credit cards, and boarding passes, but there were several other features that made it stand out in testing. We are big fans of the two SIM card slots and two plastic window pockets for extra organization for international travelers. Our only concern is that the plastic might scratch or wear over time, but it depends on how often you use the wallet and care for it.

Best Color Options

Lucrin geneva passport travel wallet.

The sleek and spacious wallet comes in over 21 colors and five leather texture options.

The premium materials come with a higher price.

One of our favorite leather passport wallets we tested, this one from Lucrin impressed us with a variety of color and texture options to please any and all travelers. There are over two dozen color options available and five different leather textures to choose from, including smooth, granulated, square granulated, vegetable tanned, and crocodile patterned. Once you narrow down your desired color and texture, we’re confident travelers will love the luxurious feel of the premium leather and generous capacity of the snap-closure wallet. It features several slip pockets, thirteen credit card slots, and a large zippered pocket for storing smaller items like coins or a pen. While the price is on the higher end, we believe you get what you pay for with this made-to-last passport wallet.

Best Crossbody

Pacsafe rfidsafe v150 rfid-blocking compact organizer.

It comes with a removable strap to keep the wallet attached to your body.

The strap isn’t adjustable.

A lost passport can put a huge damper on a trip, so we recommend the Pacsafe RFID-blocking wallet with a removable crossbody strap for keeping your travel documents attached at the hip (literally). You can wear the strap across your body, on your wrist, or through a belt to ensure the wallet is securely fastened on the go. Besides the ability to wear the wallet as a purse, we love all of the slip and zippered interior pockets for a passport, credit cards, cash, or coins, which will keep you plenty organized. The nylon material is water-resistant with a thick and durable feel, so we expect this wallet will stand the test of time.

Best Budget

Tigari passport and vaccine card holder.

The high-quality materials and functionality of this wallet are unbeatable for the low price.

It feels a bit big to carry around.

If you’re trying to build a luggage capsule for traveling, this budget-friendly passport wallet makes a useful addition for all types of travelers. Although the wallet comes at a lower price, it doesn’t lack durability and quality of materials. The PU faux leather case comes in a variety of neutral and bright colors, and it has sleek embossed wording on the front. The case opens up to reveal tons of organizational features for one passport, four credit cards, two SIM cards, and a slip pocket for cash. All of the pockets make it easy to grab travel documents quickly and the larger case keeps everything safe from damage during transit. The wallet is on the bigger side, so it might not fit in smaller purses , but it should fit in a backpack or personal item without any issues.

Best Organization

Baphity genuine leather passport holder.

There are a variety of slip and zippered pockets available.

The card slots can be tight at first.

This genuine leather passport wallet is the best option for travelers prioritizing organization. Designed to store a passport, vaccine card, cash coins, boarding passes, and SIM cards, the wallet is bursting with pockets to efficiently organize items. After we filled it with travel documents, we were impressed with how slim and compact the wallet remained. The leather material is high-quality and durable, and we think the wallet has an excellent value for the construction and price point. We ran into slight issues with the card slots being a bit tight at first, but the material loosened up with more use, which made it easier to pull the cards in and out quickly.

Best AirTag-compatible

Normest airtag travel wallet.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5

The wallet has a designated pocket for storing an Apple AirTag for tracking and locating.

It has a smaller capacity.

Tracking devices can be a game-changer if your luggage gets lost, so we recommend this AirTag-compatible wallet. While the AirTag is sold separately, the wallet does come with a secure slot on the outside to discreetly store the tracking device. The genuine leather material is sleek and soft, and the wallet has a slim design that makes it easy to place it in a back pocket or small bag. It can fit a passport, three credit cards, and some cash before running out of room, so if you’re looking for a spacious wallet, this isn’t the best option. However, sometimes it’s better to be safe than sorry, so this is a great option for AirTag enthusiasts .

Most Stylish

Away the passport wallet.

It's compact enough to fit inside any sling bag, fanny pack, and even some pant pockets.

It's a bit small and really only fits your passport and a few cards.

This compact passport wallet has a slip pocket on the front for a passport and the side opens up to reveal several credit card slots and a bit of room for cash or a plane ticket. While the side pocket doesn't have a zipper, it is tight enough that all of our items felt secure and nothing moved when we shook the wallet vigorously. We love that the small size means you can fit this passport wallet in any bag and even some pant or coat pockets for quick access. We used this throughout six flights and it was never a hassle to get the passport in and out of the case, even while in a hurry. The black leather is very sleek and feels high-quality and hasn't scratched at all throughout our months of travels. For Away fans looking for a passport wallet to complete your matching style set, this is an absolute essential.

Other Passport Wallets We Liked

There were several passport wallets that almost made our list of winners, but we ran into some slight issues during testing.

Royce Vaccine Card and Passport Wallet : The wallet has a simple and functional design, but the price is fairly high for the smaller capacity and lack of extra organizational features.

Walnew AirTag Passport Holder : It has plenty of room to fit all necessary travel documents and it comes with an AirTag leash, but we liked that the other tracking device-compatible wallet we tried holds the tracker more discreetly.

We researched and selected 16 passport wallets to test out while traveling and in everyday scenarios. From busy TSA security lines to shopping and sightseeing, we made sure the best wallets make it easy to pull out passports, credit cards, IDs, and cash when you’re in a hurry. We paid close attention to the capacity and noted how efficient the organizational features are for storing essential travel documents. Since travel can take a toll on luggage and accessories, we judged the overall quality of the materials and stitchwork to gauge the longevity of each wallet.

Tips for Buying a Passport Wallet

Check the dimensions of the wallet.

Passports from around the world feature the same design and size, but you’ll still want to make sure a passport wallet fits your size needs. Some wallets are designed to just be slightly larger than a passport and others will be large enough to fit the length of a boarding pass. It depends on the space you’ll have in a bag, pocket, or backpack, so you’ll want to consider how to store the wallet while traveling before making the purchase.

Decide how many compartments you need

Passport wallets are typically designed to hold a passport and a few credit cards, but some are equipped with more organizational features. The bigger the wallet, the more room and storage options there will be for multiple passports, credit cards, cash, and boarding passes. Extra features to look for include interior zippered pockets for coins, SIM card holders, and plastic window sleeves for IDs or vaccine cards.

Look for additional security features

Sometimes it’s better to be safe than sorry, so you may want to consider getting a passport wallet with an AirTag holder (AirTags are usually sold separately) to track the wallet in case it goes missing. Other security measures can include a wrap-around zipper to ensure passports and credit cards are secure and layers of RFID-blocking fabric to prevent cyber pick-pocketing.

Security and customs lines can be stressful, so it’s important to have your passport and other necessary documents out of any wallets or cases and ready to go. This will save time and make it easier to hand the documents over to an agent to speed up the process and eliminate unnecessary stress while traveling.

Radio frequency identification or RFID is technology commonly used in credit cards and passports to locate information and data quickly. It is possible to steal data from RFID documents, but there are some passport wallets with a fabric layer to block radio waves from transmitting. Although it’s uncommon for data to be stolen via RFID, the layer of fabric offers extra security and is designed to prevent criminals from taking information while traveling.

What To Look For

Size and capacity.

How big does the travel neck wallet need to be, or in other words, what are you trying to fit inside it?

You can choose between travel neck wallets designed to carry one person’s belongings or larger travel neck wallets that can fit up to four passports. The latter is a good option if you’re the dedicated travel organizer in your group and you usually carry other people’s documents – so a dad.

It’s worth noting that the larger travel neck wallets are usually a bit bulkier particularly when they have both zippers and Velcro flaps. This means that they won’t stay quite as invisible underneath your shirt.

The smaller neck wallets will mostly stay invisible, especially those that are shaped like pouches and designed to stick to your skin. Most of the smaller wallets are capable of holding a passport, boarding pass, cards, and cash of one traveler.

Anti Theft Features

Are there any anti-theft features that you are certain you need on the wallet? If so, look for wallets that have that specific feature and ignore most of the others.

The most common anti-theft feature in neck wallets is RFID protection. This means that your travel neck pouch or just one small zippered pocket on it is RFID-safe. The stuff inside will be safe from scammers and thieves, who might try to scan your cards and ID from afar.

RFID protects against money and identity theft, but it’s not such a common occurrence that the lack of RFID blocking needs to be a deal-breaker.

You should also look for features that keep you safe from old-school thieves, like multiple zippers and flaps, lockable zippers, and even slash-proof fabrics. Some of the best brands in the anti-theft gear business make bags and wallets that are impossible to cut through, and they’re great if you want ultimate peace of mind when you travel.

Pockets And Organization

Would you rather have a wallet that’s just one big pouch or something with multiple pockets?

Pouch wallets are usually slimmer and more easily hidden, but they’re not great for organization. You’d have to rummage through the pouch whenever you need anything, whereas with pockets everything is visible at a glance.

The downside of the wallets with pockets, especially when they have zippers and flaps, is that they’re not as invisible underneath t-shirts. Be aware of what style you prefer to make finding the right wallet for you easier.

Also, wallets that have several pockets usually have just one wallet that’s RFID safe, whereas a pouch wallet made from RFID-safe fabric will protect everything inside it. Although neck wallets with more pockets are generally better for staying organized and accessing your belongings easier, pouch wallets are usually the safest option.

I love this neck pouch because it combines fashion with versatility. It’s available in five colors, which means that it’ll match any outfit or aesthetic. Each of the colors is refined and muted. This comfortable stash comes with four separate compartments, including an ID window. I’d have loved to have this the last time I flew!

The strap is adjustable for increased convenience. You can hang the pouch around your neck like a necklace, allow it to hang lower like a purse, or even hide it underneath your shirt. It’s the perfect place to stash your important accessories. No more digging through an overcrowded purse trying to figure out where your identification is!

Venture 4th RFID Neck Wallet

I’m in love with the flat and simply-organized design of this neck pouch. It’s another one available in five colors. Unlike the previous entry of neutrals and grays, you can pick this pouch up in a purpose, pink, or red. The black is sleekly professional and guaranteed to match any outfit.

This pouch is meant to store your passport, identification, credit cards, and valuable items. The wallet has been lined with frequency shielding material. This blocks technology from non-consensually scanning your items, so you know that your personal information is always safe from electronic thieves.

Featured in the wallet are three storage compartments that organize your valuables and documentation. Two of these are zippered pockets, along with one Velcro-closure patch and an ID window for easy boarding identification.

  • Best RFID neck wallet for those concerned about security
  • Available in black, purple, pink, and red
  • Three storage compartments
  • Two secure zippered pockets and a Velcro-closure pouch
  • ID window makes it easy to board a train or plane
  • Too few storage compartments for people with tons of objects

Hide your valuables and personal information using this well-organized neck wallet. It comes in both beige and black, ensuring it’ll match any travel outfit. The design is meant to be comfortable. I love the strap, which is softer than traditional lanyards, perfect when you need to wear the wallet for a while. There’s also moisture-wick backing, keeping you from sweating when the wallet rests against your skin.

The organizer is meant to fit multiple US passports, so if you have travel companions, you can keep all of their personal information safe. The RFID liner blocks scanners from picking up personal information, so you’re safe from electronic theft. The company also offers insurance against theft, along with lost and found tags in case you misplace your information.

  • Stylish modern design that’s great for on-the-go professionals
  • Soft, comfortable strap can be worn for hours
  • Moisture-wicking backing keeps your skin dry when the wallet sits against it
  • Enough compartments to accommodate an entire family’s passports
  • Manufacturer offers theft insurance policies as well
  • May be bulky and cumbersome for single travelers

Another convenient wallet with RFID lining technology to keep your personal information safe! I’m especially a fan of this one because of the funky and fun prints that each wallet comes with. It’s great for traveling with the family or friends. Each of the prints focuses on one particular country, so it’s ideal if you’re going on any international adventures. The original designer artwork complements any outfit, whether you’re wearing muted tones or bold patterns.

One feature I’m a big fan of is the clear pocket for your smartphone. You don’t need to remove your phone from the pocket to use it. Instead, you can easily text and check your emails while ensuring you don’t forget or misplace your phone. Five extra-roomy pockets let you fit envelopes, larger currencies, and heavier valuables.

  • Funky, colorful prints will appeal to the most eclectic artists
  • Every print is based on a specific country
  • Clear smartphone pocket lets you use your phone without removing it
  • Five oversized pockets for large papers and valuables
  • Easy to find a design that fits your personal style
  • No neutral or professional tones available

Art of Travel RFID Neck Wallet

The Zero Grid wallet functions as an RFID blocking piece of security. It’s available in colors ranging from brown to gray to black and green. Like with other RFID designs, the nylon lining blocks hackers from scanning your credit cards and passport. There are seven unique RFID blocking sleeves included to protect your individual cards outside the wallet.

The design is built for international travelers who spend a lot of time in crowded areas. It uses durable ripstop nylon that’s so lightweight you can barely feel it. The water-resistant material can protect your personal information from a bad weather spell, but keep in mind that it’s not totally waterproof.

The fabric wicks moisture away to keep you from sweating, and the breathability ensures that your skin stays cool and dry. The interior has three compartments, all with zippers.

  • RFID protected wallet with 7 individual RFID sleeves to protect your cards
  • 3 interior zippered compartments to store your currency and phone
  • Lightweight nylon fabric wicks moisture to prevent discomfort with long wear
  • Company offers reimbursement of up to 300 dollars if a theft occurs
  • ReturnMe stickers included as part of a global lost and found program
  • No ID window for easy boarding at the airport

Minimalism is all the rage these days. If you’re a firm believer that less is more, you’ll probably appreciate this slim leather wallet. Unlike the other options on this list, this wallet is made for traditional use. But it has a lanyard loop, so you can attach it to a strap around your neck.

The wallet has an ID window, 6 credit card slots, and a zipper pocket for currency. You can easily carry this wallet in a pocket of your dress or in your bra. Like the other options on the list, this design is outfitted with RFID blocking technology to keep your information safe. How to Wear Travel Neck Wallets

Wear it around the neck.

The traditional way to wear this type of travel wallet is around the neck. A neck wallet allows you to keep your ID, passport, credit cards, and cash all in the same place. Since it’s worn around your neck, it’s much more difficult to pickpocket than your regular wallet.

Wallets like the Lewis N. Clark come with adjustable straps. You can increase the length to conceal it underneath your clothes, or decrease the length to access the contents more easily. Some women conceal the strap of their travel wallet underneath a scarf, so potential thieves don’t even realize it’s there.

Attach Your Neck Wallet to Your Bra

You can also attach the wallet to your bra for added security. This is a great choice if you’re concerned that your neck strap might break, or if you want to conceal the wallet completely below your clothes. To attach a wallet to your bra, you’ll want a strap that can clip onto your clothing.

Just fasten the strap of the wallet to the strap of your bra. You can tuck the wallet itself between your bra cups, so it’s easy to access but very difficult to steal. It’s also possible to attach a wallet to your belt loops if the bra method isn’t comfortable.

Wrap It Around Your Ankle

This method probably won’t work well if you’re wearing flip flops. But for girlies traveling to colder climates, it’s a great way to conceal your things. Chances are, you’re wearing tall boots or at least high-top sneakers. Tuck the wallet between your ankle and the shoe where it can’t be seen.

One thing to keep in mind with this method is the weather. If it’s going to be wet, you’ll need waterproof boots. Otherwise, the precipitation might mess up your cash, ID, or passport.

Travel Neck Wallets FAQ

What is the best neck passport holder.

The best neck passport holder should be comfortable, easy to organize, and secure. The right one for you just depends on your personal style.

Does a passport need RFID protection?

In the US, there are no longer passports issued without an electronic chip. To prevent digital theft, RFID blocking tech is best as you travel.

Are all passports the same size?

Though different countries have different designs, passport rules are standardized through the International Civil Aviation Organization. They are all 88 by 125 millimeters.

We found travel wallets that are great for navigating old cities around the clock, and travel wallets that can handle all sorts of rugged adventures. We curated all our travel wallets with durability and design in mind, but we also considered features that make each wallet unique in and of its own. The one quality you'll find in each travel wallet? They all are sized to hold an American passport nice and snug. After all, it wouldn't be a travel wallet if it didn't hold your most important papers.

Best AirTag Wallets | Best Card Holder Wallets | Best Slim Wallets | Best Magsafe Wallets | Best Travel Gadgets

Pioneer's Passport Wallet is wonderfully simple in design and tough as nails thanks to its waterproof ripstop fabric construction. In fact, we found the waterproof ripstop fabric is great for handling humid environments, staying dry and and stiff, as opposed to getting all slimy and flimsy as other travel wallets can become in these climates. As far as stroage goes, it comes with a full length cash pocket, pockets to store up to 8 cards, and a 3D molded passport pocket designed to fit an American passport perfectly snug.

Due to this wallet's construction. look, and function, we found it to be our favorite pick when taking to warm weather vacation and cold weather trips. The material is simply just too good, and you never have to worry about any of the contents sliding out. Simply put, the Pioneer Passport Wallet is capable of all kinds of trips and adventures. This is a quality investment we'd recommend over and over again.

Bellroy makes several great travel wallets, but the wallet we found most like the wallet you probably already carry is the bifold Travel Wallet. It's got a fine all leather make and will hold a passport, cash, train tickets, and up to 10 cards. What's cool is the wallet comes with a micro pen that hangs inside the wallet's spine, which we found to be useful when wanting to write down recommendations of places to visit from friends and other travelers.

Looks can be deceiving due to the wallet's traditional bifold design. It measures 3.8-inches tall by 6-inches wide, so it is big. Overall we find it to be a great minimalist travel wallet with a classic style that blends in nicely in all environments.

This reasonably priced wallet from Fjallraven is made with a durable waxed waterproof canvas and a YKK zippered closure to protect all your documents and cards from the elements. Inside are 5 card pockets, 2 cash pockets, and 1 zippered coin pouch. Looking for the passport pocket? That would be behind the coin pouch—it's a nice and discrete design note, we know.

If you're looking for a rugged wallet with waterproofing and protection but don't want to pay over $100, this is a solid option. Fjallraven fans will see this wallet has the same quality construction like the brand's other gear, which is a great sign because the maker is one of the best valued outdoor brands out there.

The design of a good AirTag wallet is still being perfected, but that doesn't mean we don't like what's already on the market. If you're looking for a travel wallet you can store your AirTag in, this one from Lumberjack Plaid is our latest favorite.

It comes in a sleek and stylish leather (3 colors available) and features a passport pocket, a long pocket for tickets and cash, and 3 card slots. You get all this for $40, which is an excellent value for such a quality wallet. Just be aware the leather can show scratches pretty easily; most notably on the dark leather.

Made to fall in line with all your other Tumi luggage, the Passport Case comes in a sleek, all-black look with more interior space than one might think. We're talking a passport pocket, a billfold compartment, an ID window, 2 slip pockets, and 8 card pockets. You get the best of both worlds with this wallet: great style and high functionality. Well done Tumi, well done.

We get it, many of us aren't jet-setting out of the U.S. several times in a year. Nonetheless it's important to have a passport wallet even if you're only getting out of the country once in a blue moon. For overseas trips that are few and far between, this RFID-blocking leather travel passport case for under $30 on Amazon will do the job. It will also give off style points, as the leather has a nice rich look to it that holds up well when used sparingly.

Due to the stitching and overall quality of the materials we'd say this wallet might not be suitable for high levels of use. But because it carries a high durability and functionality for the price, we recommend it as a great travel wallet for those who might need to take a passport with them only once or twice in a year.

If you want to go with a more secure wallet, this thin travel pouch can be strapped around the waist and hold your passport, cash, cards, and more. The pouch itself has RFID tech built-in so you get another level of safety. Plus the pouch is made from water-resistant ripstop, so you won't have to worry about any of your items getting soaked from rain.

One note to point out is even though the price point of this belt is incredibly good, we believe the thin fabric could wear down faster over time than some of the other wallets on this list.

The Apex wallet is made with fine leather that's heat bonded instead of being stitched. The result is a unique design that, when closed, fully encases the inner contents of the wallet from the outside elements. The Apex will hold a passport, cash, and 2-4 cards. And just like the Travel Wallet, you get a small micro pen that can be stored inside on the wallet's spine.

Handcrafted from USA heritage leather, Shinola's Utility Passport Wallet is truly made to age like fine wine. When opening up the wallet, one side contains a passport pocket while the other has 5 faille-lined pockets for your cards. It's not the most feature-loaded travel wallet on this list, and it's certainly not the cheapest, but if you're looking for something simple and timeless then this is the one.

You're not going to find another travel wallet like this one, and that's the point. Texas boot-maker Tecovas went and took the same authentic American alligator leather it uses for its boots and crafted the material into a passport case. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece with a passport pocket and 4 exterior card pockets. What's cool is you can even monogram it.

Of course the price point on this wallet is almost like buying a luxury good, but really the only qualm we have with the wallet is its availability. Sometimes it's popularity gets the best of it, and so you might have to turn to the Ostrich Passport Case or the original Passport Case —two excellent alternatives, no less.

Malbon Golf Yacht Club Passport Holder

Yacht Club Passport Holder

The streetwear-inspired golf brand Malbon Golf has been turning out tons of cool pieces this year. One of its products that has flown under-the-radar is this pebbled leather passport holder. We were surprised to open it up and see tons of card space to go with the passport pocket. And as far as style goes, it comes with cool embossments on the front and inner pocket and is available in three colors.

Tanner Goods Leather Passport Travel Wallet

Leather Passport Travel Wallet

If you liked the full leather of the Shinola travel wallet but wished it had a different interior configuration, then this travel wallet from Tanner Goods is a great alternative. Inside is a passport pocket with a small card pocket on top of the passport flap, plus two additional card slots on the other side.

The wallet might not hold a lot, but if you want a minimalist leather wallet with great style and a thin silhouette, then you'll be happy with this choice.

Zero Grid Travel Wallet Passport Holder

Travel Wallet Passport Holder

Similar to the belted travel wallet we featured earlier, this passport holder can be used as a sling bag and is made with waterproof ripstop and covered with RFID blocking material. What's cool is it zips shut, closing in the passport and up to 10 cards that can fit on the inside. You also get a small stylus that you can hang on the wallet's spine.

line

Buying a quality travel wallet is going to look a lot like buying your everyday wallet, but the two are not the same. Here's what you need to know.

  • Durability: Making sure your travel wallet is tough and made of good materials is of utmost importance. After all, this is your last line of defense to your passport—the most important document you need when traveling overseas. This prior notion is why we loved reviewing travel wallets made from tear-resistant and water-resistant materials (like the Pioneer Travel Wallet). Premium leather is also a good material to protect your passport, as the leather provides a thick layer to keep moisture and dust from getting to your papers.
  • Security Features: Some travel wallets comes with RFID (radio-frequency identification) lining to help prevent RFID theft. It's true this type of crime doesn't happen a lot, but it is possible, and so buying a travel wallet with RFID lining does add a level of security to your essentials. Another security feature to look for are zippered or snap closures that help keep your passport and cards sealed off. We like these closures because it helps limit the chances of any items accidentally falling out when traveling—which happens more than one might think.
  • AirTag Tracking: Although we only have one AirTag travel wallet we like right now, we anticipate more of these types of wallets to hit the market in the coming year. AirTag wallets have become a huge hit thanks to their tracking abilities, and so any travel wallet that can incorporate an AirTag in a slimming and discrete way should be considered on your shortlist of what travel wallets to buy.

Can You Use a Passport Covers as A Wallet?

commerce breaker

Travel wallets, also sometimes referred to as passport wallets, are the best possible choice for carrying your passport and your cash and cards. Travel wallets are not to be confused with passport covers, which are simply covers you can slide over your passport to add a level of protection.

Passport covers do theoretically have space where you could slide some cash plus 1-2 cards inside, but those spaces oftentimes make your valuables prone to falling out. A passport cover is not designed to hold anything more than a passport, and so whatever else you put in there is going to be like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Stick to a travel wallets for cash, card, and passport carry.

Why Trust Us

commerce breaker

In order to keep up with new new designs and releases, the MH tech and gear team is continually testing all of the latest everyday carry accessories to make sure our recommendations reflect the top products within each space.

When it comes to travel wallets, we acquire and call in the latest releases to test, and then we take them out into the real world. At any given point, writers and editors in our office are traveling, and so we plan accordingly whenever we are going to be up in the air to take one or two travel wallets with us to see how they perform. Lastly, we take a hands-on look at the travel wallets up close. We inspect everything from the material to the build of the wallet to determine it's durability and whether or not the price point reflects the overall quality.

How We Selected

line

Our MH commerce team thoroughly researched and tested dozens of the best travel wallets, from budget to designer to premium, gift-worthy models. We noted everything from how snug the wallet fit an American passport to how the interior card slots were organized. We also considered fabric quality (especially when it came to leather) and price. The list above represents our honest picks for the best travel wallets of 2023.

The Winks Travel Neck Wallet certainly won’t win any style points, but it’s a useful solution for storing your important travel documents and it comes at a good price.

  • Portability
  • Competition
  • Final Verdict

We purchased the Winks Travel Neck Wallet so our writer could put it to the test. Keep reading for our full product review.

Keeping your travel documents closely guarded during an international trip is of the utmost importance, which is why tools like passport holders and passport protectors are so popular. There are a few different types of accessories you can choose from in this category, including wallet-style passport protectors and wearable holders that have space for keys and cards. The Winks Travel Neck Wallet passport holder with RFID-blocking technology is the latter—it’s a slim bag that travelers can wear around their necks to safely hold their passports, tickets, and other essential travel documents. We tested it out on a recent trip to see how it performed in terms of functionality and convenience. Read on for all the details and to find out whether or not we think this is the right passport holder for your next adventure.

Design: Not going to win a style award

The Winks Travel Neck Wallet is thoughtfully designed with many features travelers will appreciate. Rather than being shaped like a billfold or protective passport case, it’s instead styled as a hanging bag that can be worn around the neck, either over or under your clothes. It comes in three color options: black, grey, or pink.

It’s 9 inches long and 5.5 inches wide with seven pockets. There are several slots a passport could fit in, though the most secure pocket is likely the large zippered one on the front. In our testing, we were able to hold three passports very easily, which makes the Winks Travel Neck Wallet a good option for couples or parents with young children .

It’s made from 210D ripstop nylon so you know it’s durable. The back of the holder is padded with very light moisture-wicking foam to make it comfortable against skin or clothing, and the thin neck strap is adjustable. It’s important to note that it’s quite a thin strap. It may not be ideal if you have concerns about someone cutting or ripping it off your body. We also found that when the holder was packed full and worn under clothing, the thin strap dug into our shoulder skin a little. It wasn’t painful, but it may be annoying if you’re trying to do significant sightseeing or walk long distances.

It worked exceptionally well, with plenty of pockets and secure space.

The real downfall of the design, in our opinion, is that it screams “tourist.” Wearing it on the outside of your clothing is a surefire way to mark yourself as a tourist in any foreign country, which can be appealing to pickpockets . A common safety rule of international travel is “try to blend in,” and you will absolutely not blend in if you’re wearing this over your clothing as you explore. Many travel experts also recommend that you should carry a copy of your passport with you and leave your actual passport in the safety of a hotel safe.

You could, of course, wear the passport holder under your clothing, which is commonly done. That allows you to keep your documents close without advertising that you’re carrying valuables. This is a popular tactic for travelers in areas where pickpocketing is common or where hotel safes and storage can’t be trusted. A third option is not to wear it at all but instead carry it as an accessory to keep all your travel documents in one place, which is what we did. It worked exceptionally well, with plenty of pockets and secure space. It’s also water-resistant, which is sure to be helpful if you get caught with your passport in a downpour or have to change planes in rainy weather.

Portability: Can carry most of your small items

The Winks Travel Neck Wallet excels in portability. Aside from being wearable and thin enough to lie flat under loose clothing, it's loaded with useful pockets. It held much more than we thought it would, including three passports, a cell phone, earbuds, several credit cards , a wad of cash, lip balm, and a hotel room key. If you're not carrying too much beyond that, it could be your only bag while out sightseeing for the day.

Aside from being wearable and thin enough to lie flat under loose clothing, it’s loaded with useful pockets.

Once loaded up, it can feel a bit bulky under clothes so how you carry it really comes down to personal preference. In our testing, a friend described it as “a sort of dorky-looking purse," which seems fitting. It's certainly not stylish or trendy, but it's very useful. Even packed full, it has a much slimmer profile than a purse. Because it's fairly slim, it's easy to slide into a backpack or bag if you're carrying one while sightseeing.

Security: Solid protection

A selling point of the Winks Travel Neck Wallet is the fact that it's woven with RFID-blocking fibers. That means the passport holder interrupts frequencies from electronic card readers, so thieves trying to steal your information electronically will be unable to read the contents of any cards in your bag. Your info will be safe if you use the designated credit card pockets, even if someone around you is phishing for data.

Price: A no-brainer on price

The Winks Travel Neck Wallet retails for around $17, making it cheaper than most budget wallets. If you think there’s even a small chance it may come in handy during your trip, it’s worth buying. It would also be an affordable gift to give a frequent traveler in your life.

If you think there’s even a small chance it may come in handy during your trip, it’s worth buying.

Competition: Design will guide your decision

Anthropologie Whitney Winkler Posie Passport Holder: The Anthropologie passport holder and the Winks Travel Passport holder are two very different items. Anthropologie’s holder is more like a protective book for your passport rather than a wearable accessory. It also has a trendier, more elegant design, with patterns created by current artists. However, the Winks Travel Neck Wallet has many more pockets and holds more items than the Posie Passport Holder, making it a better choice for buyers who want to carry multiple passports or use it in lieu of a purse or bag.

The Venture 4th Travel Neck Pouch Wallet : The Venture 4th Travel Neck Pouch Wallet is extremely similar in design to the Winks Travel Neck Wallet, even down to the name. Both have a similar design and features and have space to carry your passport as well as travel documents and cards. They’re nearly the same in price, too, so the decision on which to buy may just come down to aesthetics (though they’re almost the same on that front, too.)

A great option for those who prioritize security above style.

If you’re at all worried about keeping your passport safe during travel, you’ll appreciate the secure pockets and close fit of the Winks Travel Neck Wallet passport holder. It lacks a trendy design, but it’s a useful buy for travelers who want to keep important documents together in one easy-to-carry place.

Money Belt or Neck Wallet? Reviews and Alternatives to Keep Your Stuff Safe When Traveling

What’s the best way to keep your credit cards, cash and passport safe when you travel?

The default is usually a money belt or fanny pack that you wear around your waist, and may tuck away under your clothes. But there are much better options out there for keeping your stuff safe, like neck wallets. This review looks at money belts, neck wallets, leg and wrist wallets, belt wallets, bras and clothes with hidden pockets.

We’ve tried on, used, researched or received recommendations on each of the products we’ve listed. We only recommend products that we would use and would recommend to friends. We don’t accept advertorials or payment for positive reviews.

Just Use a Small Daypack

Another alternative is to use a small daypack to hold your valuables. Even better is a small bag that you can sling in front of your body, making it harder for pickpockets to access. Keep your wallet, passport, and essentials in the daybag, but have a small stash of cash in a pocket for incidentals so you won’t have to pull out your wallet for every transaction. We bought an Eagle Creek daypack in 2003 (it came as a zip on addition to a large backpack).

I kid you not, that Eagle Creek daypack was probably the best purchase I’ve ever made. We used it everyday on our year-long trip in 2003, on a six month trip in 2012, and on a three month trip to the Philippines and Hong Kong. It’s been slammed around in airplanes, ferries and Thai longboats, shoved on the top of shared vans, and dropped into the luggage compartment of trains. It’s traveled through over 20 countries.

I also used it almost every day for a few years just as a bag to carry my odds and ends to work and back. I’ve never had to do anything other than wipe it off occasionally. Not a stitch or repair.

It finally tore in the bottom and on the shoulder on our trip to Ecuador and Mexico in 2017, after 14 years of hard use.

These days, we’re trying out a top-loading Pacsafe anti-theft adventure backpack . This new backpack is a thing of beauty. It’s surprisingly lightweight, has a padded tablet sleeve, a wealth of pockets and locking zippers I’m still deciphering, and anti-theft Slashguard stainless steel wire mesh embedded into it. At 18 inches high and 9 inches wide, it’s small enough to use as a personal item with most airlines, and it hold a LOT.

We haven’t used it for much more than day use on a few hikes, but it’s been very comfortable for a couple of hours on the trails. It seems to be well made, and like it will last a long time.

Find out more here.

Do It Old School

The most old fashioned, and probably the most secure, way to protect your stuff is to sew an extra pocket into the inside of your shirt or pants, and store some emergency money and a credit card there. If you’re not a seamstress, you can use a safety pin to attach a few dollars to the inside of your clothes.

Sliding a $100 into your shoe also works, though it’s easy to lose, and can end up smelling like dirty cheese. Women can even slip a little cash inside the lining of a bra.

Keeping Your Stuff Safe

Probably the best defense against getting robbed or pick pocketed is how you act.

  • Don’t flash cash, jewelry, electronics or anything expensive and keep out of dangerous areas, especially at night.
  • Don’t put everything in one place. Keep a second stash stash of money in your pocket or somewhere else easily accessible. That way, you don’t have to fumble with your hidden stash when you pay for something. It also acts as a lure for pickpockets – they’ll go for the easy $$ and leave the neck wallet alone.
  • If you do get held up, just hand over your wallet and money. It’s not worth getting killed over material things that can be replaced.

The Bottom Line

Overall, we found that a neck wallet is a good combination of security, accessibility and comfort.

What you choose also depends on how much stuff you have. For us, the days of traveling with a single passport, a credit card, and a little cash are gone for now. We now have more essentials to carry wherever we go, including four passports, wet wipes, Kid’s Tylenol, lollipops for air pressure changes in airplanes, travel insurance information, boarding passes and so on.

We shove all of the non-essential stuff in a small backpack, and the passports, credit cards and cash in a neck wallet worn under our clothes. The backpack acts as a pretty good lure for pickpockets and thieves. If the backpack’s lost or stolen, it’s a hassle, but nothing’s too hard to replace.

Thanks for sharing these travel accessories for men and women. These are very useful while traveling.

Great, helpful post. Thanks for sharing all your advice and expertise! You guys have a fantastic site here – I really enjoy it. 🙂

Thanks so much for the kind words! We’re happy to help anytime we can 🙂

Useful information… thanks a bunch.

Useful and I love the comparison chart. It makes things really easy. I use a daypack its easy and I hate poking things while traveling. Will look into neck wallets. Money belt and belt wallets don’t really work for me. Its too hot here in India so no additional belts please. Usually I don’t wear a belt (salwar kameez and loose trousers don’t require them) so no belt wallet.

Great advice but one tip though. I’d always recommend going with a money belt over a neck wallet because thieves can see the string around your neck. In Ho Chi Min City, one of my friends was wearing a neck wallet and a motorbike came by with a knife and slashed it off her. From then on, I only use money belts. I have this TravelMore Wallet and it has lasted me for years and highly recommend it.

Thanks for this post. I realize it’s a bit outdated, but the general recommendations are still relevant. I was torn between the waist money belt and the neck wallet, and based on your recommendation I’ve ordered the neck wallet. Heading to Costa Rica in a few weeks and want to make sure I’ve got something lightweight and comfortable enough to wear when we’re on the road between locations. Thanks. I just found this site today and will bookmark it!

Thank you for great tip. I like neck wallets because not a lot of wallets are protected by RFID technology.

Woo thanks for sharing such an informative post. I really need a Money Belt for Women and thinking I’ll buy one.

Do you really need to have a special wallet when travelling? In my few months on the road, I had secret money belts, etc.

But its like dogs smelling fear, when you stand out, and you endanger yourself.

Act like the locals and you’re all good.

Neck wallets are the best for your passport.

Thanks for the post.

Don’t count on slash proof to deter a robber. Just this past Thursday 3/15/18 a robber (who claimed he had a knife) used tremendous force to rip a fanny back off me that was securely strapped to my body. No more visible stuff for me. This was in a medium size town where I live, at a big box store in a good neighborhood ! Dug out my waist and neck pouches and adapting them to make invisible. I wear socks all the time, so will probably use something there too. Latest news showed police found a weapons stash and burglar tools in his hotel room.

Great article and very useful as I researched options for our upcoming trip to Europe. I decided on the Pacsafe Vibe 20L due to the airlines new 10″ wide restrictions. 20 liters should be fine. It will be paired with a belt/inside pants wallet. Question I have is this: how often have you been pickpocketed/robbed and where? We’ve found that Italy is absolutely the worst for common pickpockets but I’m curious how other spots fare.

Hi John, knock on wood but we’ve never been pickpocketed or robbed in any of the countries we’ve been to. We’ve heard some horror stories though from fellow travelers so the truth is, it does happen. That said, we’re always crazy vigilant when we travel, stay away from large crowds with tons of people if we can, we watch each others backs, always down play our perceived wealth and we tend to only keep a few dollars in easy to access places that a pickpocket is likely to strike first. Can’t say where the worst places are these days since the bad ones keep changing. Good choice on the Pacsafe, it’s a great bag. Have a fun time in Europe!

Agree on Italy especially near sights like Colosseum. I’d also be wary @ Las Ramblas in Barcelona. Ditto, @ Carnival in Rio, Brazil. All rampant w/ pickpockets. Fortunately, we’ve been good as we always use discreet wearables to avoid that risk. May you stay safe on your next adventure!

You say that a fanny pack is generally considered to be one of the dorkiest things you can wear, why is that? I feel that people keep saying this because they heard someone else say it and no one wants to be the first to admit that they are useful, comfortable, and handy because they don’t want to seem uncool to others.

It really helped when you said that we should not put everything in one place, so we need to keep some in a different pocket or place that is easily accessible for us. I will keep that in mind so that my belongings are safe, so I might buy a couple of women’s genuine leather card holder. It will give me peace of mind that my cards would be separate from each other, especially the one with the most amount in it.

You will likely read at various government and other "serious, authoritative" sites that you should indeed have your original passport on you at all times...

I am of quite the contrarian view, and believe the conservative view is a vestige of previous, "Cold War" thinking (as in, the repressive state out to get you), OR cops looking to hassle you for bribes.

While cops May indeed pay more attention to some folks, the targets are NOT tourists, but rather folks they suspect might be "illegal migrants".

If you have a copy of your passport, in the rare event you are asked for it, advise the original is safely locked up back at your hotel, you should be fine. The alternative is to risk losing your original (perhaps due to pickpockets, thieves - same as any large city, NOT unique to Russia). If you lose your original passport with visa, you will be faced with WAY more hassle and expense to replace it.

I am sure others will chime in here...but quite sure almost all will say they were never stopped and asked for this. Note that if you choose to do something like buy a train ticket at the station, or travel on a train, you will need your original passport.

I agree with the copy if your hotel can lock up the original Passport for you? I take a small flat hip pouch with me at all times when I travel. This is the kind that your belt loops go through. Very hard for a pick pocket to get into mine. I put everything into it including wallet. And as it is under a coat most of the time, know one even knows it's there. Also keep a copy of your P P in a coat pocket, a suit case & such. This would make things much more easy if you were to miss place the original and have to make a trip to the American embassy for a new temporary P P. AIM.

Thanks for that, will take your advice. Hope not to get knocked down.

Thanks for the advice

I went around the city with a 'proof of stay' the hotel gave me upon arrival. They took care of my passport for the rest of the stay. The police will usually leave tourists alone (they don't want a diplomatic incident, do they?). However, they do look out for illegal migrants as Ebertsj mentioned. If you are 'unfortunate' to look like one of those, it is best to at least hold a copy of the pasport with you.

Tobias S... that sounds like a good idea, thank you

Note that the proof of stay I believe a copy of the registration the hotel is required to file with the Migration Services. The last few times I have been over the hotel I frequent has not routinely given me a copy, and the last time when I needed this go my own purposes, only got this 2 days into my stay.

The bottom line is you should not even need this, but for sure, leave your passport safely back a hotel...

Is there any pass control etc. in transit between Terminal D and E at SVO airport? Do you think 1 hour and 15 minutes is enough when luggage is checked in to destination?

' class=

Hi All, been in touch with the embassy and aeroflot and can't seem to get a straight answer.

Thanks in advance.

secure passport travel wallet neck

According to this site you do.

However, if the destination is Belarus or Kazakhstan with transit at some Russian airport (such as Moscow), then a transit visa is required, since flights between these countries are considered domestic flights ."

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. Aeroflot website only mentions Belarus, so it's confusing seeing many different opinions. I will try and speak to the embassy today.
