WHERE THE DUNES MEET THE SEA

After an early morning breakfast we head out on a 1.5 hour private helicopter flight along the Atlantic coastline where the dunes swirl down to kiss the sea, over the Dorob National Park, one of the most important wetlands in the world for breeding flamingo and further south to the famous Eduard Bohlen shipwreck near Conception Bay.

Enjoy the cobbled streets and picturesque buildings of the quaint town of Swakopmund, drink ale in one of the traditional German pubs and indulge in some delicious seafood cuisine at one of the sophisticated restaurants with views of the ocean.

Sandwich Harbour, part of the Namib Naukluft Park, is a place many have heard of but very few have ever visited. The lagoon, salt pans and the bird sanctuary, which form the Walvis Bay Wetlands, are rightly heralded as the single most important coastal wetlands of Southern Africa. It is one of five Ramsar sites in Namibia. Giant sand dunes run straight into the ocean, creating breathtaking sceneries and unique landscapes, just waiting to be discovered! We discover these dunes and enjoy a champagne and oyster lunch between the dunes.

PURROS CONSERVANCY

Perched on a hill above the banks of the ephemeral Hoarusib River, the Okahirongo Elephant Lodge is possibly one of the most remote lodges in Namibia and a genuine safari experience. The lodge will dazzle your senses with its mix of stylish tranquility, eccentric architecture, ultimate comfort and excellent service. An oasis of luxury in the middle of the desert.

The stunning architecture and the unique desert setting make this place an extraordinary mix of elegance and essential shapes topped with friendly and professional service to make your stay unforgettable

Infinity pool, dining rooms, library, chill out lounges, sun deck, beautiful wildlife wandering around, stunning views, top quality service, fine food & cocktails: you won’t miss a thing.

The main complex area is shaped after the traditional local tribe village: with the Himba’s signature dome-like entrance and the holy central fire-place to stay in touch with the ancestors and the ‘boma’, the African meeting place.

Elephant Lodge offers unique occasions to live great adventures: from stunning scenic drives to elusive desert adapted animals tracking. Each location has a specific set of experiences that we suggest to dive deep in the heart of the Kaokoland and the extraordinary Himba culture. Our guides are 100% locals with lifetime experience in the location: they are true Himbas, heirs of ancient desert tribes knowledge. We train them to master desert driving and english and they bring in their priceless knowledge of nature and animals, for an experience that is a true encounter rather than just another “drive”. Our everyday activities are run on Toyota LandCruiser and LandRover Defender 9 seats open game-drives, specifically equipped for desert environment. The vehicles are shared with other lodge members, to have a dedicated vehicle we offer private activities on closed, air conditioned vehicles with a private guide.

MARIENFLUSS - KAOKOVELD

Set under verdant trees on the banks of the Kunene River, we make our way to one of the most remote camps in southern Africa. Guests can truly disconnect, unwind and relax to the sound of rushing water, and explore one of the driest deserts in the world.

Respectful interaction with the semi-nomadic Himba community, fascinating nature walks, boating (water levels permitting), and low-impact guided quad-bike excursions complete the experience.

The Marienfluss conservancy lies at the extreme north west of Namibia’s Kunene region and borders Angola. With the Baines and Zebra Mountains to the north, along which the Kunene River flows west to the Atlantic, and with the Hartmann Mountains and the desert waste of the Skeleton coast to the west, the Marienfluss is a large valley where the nomadic Himba tribe pass through. The conservancy covers 3,304 km2. There are a mere 340 people in the area – around one person per square kilometer.

Grasslands dominate the broad, central Marienfluss and Hartmann’s Valleys, with dunes covering the western section. Wildlife includes leopard, cheetah, giraffe, duiker, steenbok, gemsbok, springbok, ostrich, mountain zebra, crocodile, kudu.

ETOSHA

After breakfast we head north following the fabled Skeleton coast and over the Cape Cross seal colony in our private helicopter before heading inland into the breathtaking mountain region of the Damaraland and the Koaoveld

In a country jam-packed with vast, spectacularly beautiful landscapes, Damaraland and Kaokoland may just be the most incredible of them all. Deep in north-western Namibia, the area is a melee of towering mountains, sand dunes, and huge expanses of desert, scattered with unique wildlife and nomadic Himba settlements. It’s also one of Namibia’s most remote and wild environments, and one that not many will get the chance to discover in a lifetime.

Se off on game drives tracking endangered rhino, desert-adapted elephant, and desert-adapted giraffe

Strap on your walking shoes for a guided nature walk over the rolling dunes, rocky mountains and desert plains crisscrossed by ancient, dry riverbeds. Nomadic Himba settlements dot the landscape, and scattered herds of desert-adapted elephant and giraffe are a common sight.

Exchange smiles on a cultural experience with the local Herero people before retiring to your private veranda to marvel at the magnitude of your surroundings (G&T in hand).

Experience the picturesque Brandberg mountain from the air, Namibia's highest, and home to thousands of ancient rock paintings and engravings including the fabled White Lady.

Sossus Full Day

Sossusvlei full day excursion.

  • Duration: Full Day

Route and highlights: We take off from Swakopmund early in the morning and fly via the barren "Moon Landscape" and the dry Kuiseb Riverbed to Sossusvlei. After about 1 hours flight we land at Sossusvlei Lodge, where a safari vehicle awaits us, taking us deeper into the Namib Desert. After a breakfast in the dunes (optional) we visit the famous Dune 45 (named after the distance of 45 km to the Sesriem entrance gate).

Further highlights of the excursion are the Big Daddy, which is known to be one of the highest sand dune in the world rising up 325 metres and the Dead Vlei with its picturesque dead camelthorn trees. A long time ago the Tsauchab River flew into this Vlei supplying water to the trees. The moving dunes eventually cut off this life-giving source, leaving the trees to dry out and die. The absence of humidity conserved the trees and they remain until today as mummified witnesses of long gone times. Another highlight is of course the Sossusvlei, today’s drainage basin for the ephermal Tsauchab River. Back at Sossusvlei Lodge we enjoy a hearty lunch.

After lunch we fly along the coastline back to Swakopmund, encountering further interesting sightings along the way like the mysterious restricted diamond area "Sperrgebiet" with its abandoned ghost towns, Conception Bay with its seal colony, the shipwrecks Eduard Bohlen (1909) and Shawnee (1976) and last but not least Sandwich Harbour where the rolling waves of the Atlantic Ocean break against the mighty sand dunes of the Namib Desert.

Eduard Bohlen Shipwreck Helicopter Flight

  • Description

Additional Information

Soaring above the Skeleton Coast from above is a spectacular visual experience. On this two hour helicopter flight , fly over the magnificent dune landscapes, the Kuiseb River, Eduard Bohlen shipwreck in the middle of the desert, Sandwich Harbour, Walvis Bay and Long Beach. Experience the Skeleton Coast from above as we fly over the dune landscapes, Eduard Bohlen shipwreck, Kuiseb River, Sandwich Harbour, Walvis Bay and Long Beach for 2 hours. Include this activity in your Namibia safari itinerary for a unique experience.

Kuiseb River

Bordered on one side by barren rock and on the other side some the tallest sand dunes in the world, the Kuiseb River in Namibia is a ‘linear oasis’ that crosses the Namib Desert. This ephemeral river flows from the Khomas highlands west of Windhoek all the way through Walvis Bay – stretching over 400 kilometres from the interior land to the coast.

Eduard Bohlen Shipwreck

Located roughly 400m from the Skeleton Coast coastline, the Eduard Bohlen Shipwreck dates back to 1909 when it was wrecked in a thick fog. Due to it not being submerged, the ship looks like it was left right in the middle of the desert.

Walvis Bay Salt Works

Spanning 3500 hectares, Walvis Bay’s salt pans are among the largest solar evaporation fields on the African continent, converting millions of tonnes of ocean water to salt each year. Depending on the level of evaporation and the corresponding salinity, different micro-organisms are predominant in the pans, changing the colour of the water from green to pink-red and creating vivid colour contrasts.

Skeleton Coast

A shipwreck just offshore in the cold Atlantic on the Skeleton Coast of Namibia.

And we really mean that. For a start, you’ve got the Namib holidaying right there, beside the shoreline. A sliver of desert spanning the 1,500km from the Orange River in the south to the Kunene River and Angolan Border. Then you’ve got a sea which has claimed hundreds of ships and many more lives. Add in treacherous currents, thick sea fogs and foul smelling seals. En masse. But if you think we’re underselling this place, think again. This place is extraordinary. Nowhere on sweet Earth offers you an experience like this and Namibia knows it. So much so that they’ve designated their entire coastline a national park. Throw in the hugely popular Swakopmund and Walvis Bay and you’re laughing. Think water sports, water safaris and wet suits. Oh, and for convenience they’ve added a coastal road too. One which straddles the ocean and the desert like a tightrope from Swakopmund through the Recreation Area.

In this article we’re calling the whole Namibian coastline the ‘Skeleton Coast’ which is not strictly true.  Let’s start from the top and meander down.

1. Sun, Sea and Shipwrecks - Skeleton Coast National Park

Skeleton Coast inline image 5ddf7f8d67379

That’s one eerie sounding moniker. The Skeleton Coast National Park is the northern stretch, north of Ugab River Gate and beyond Terrace Bay. A vast, brooding and impenetrable national park. Bleak too and one of the most inhospitable places in the world. Cold water and an expanse of dunes, this is the driest place in sub- Saharan Africa and the final resting place of more than a thousand rusting shipwrecks . The turbulent Benguela Current causes strong winds, shifting sandbanks and powerful undertows that have led to many a sailor's demise. It’s a true testament to the humbling power of nature's forces.

Many of the wrecks have been destroyed by the elements but some, like the Eduard Bohlen, are still visible. This is quite a sight as she appears to be stranded in the middle of the desert after running aground in 1907. There’s the Second World War’s Dunedin Star too. She left London and ended up in a heap here.

As horrible as their histories are they are strangely beautiful and atmospheric. You may also find traces of the whaling and sealing industries which lasted into the early 1900s and left real skeletons. Plus, there’s usually a plethora of seals and marine birds hanging around the wrecks too. You may even get exceptionally lucky and see desert adapted elephant, rhino and lion.

Skeleton Coast inline image 5de514837607e

2. Seal City - Cape Cross Seal Colony

Skeleton Coast inline image 5ddf7f560cd7c

Yup, there are thousands. And thousands. Weird isn’t it. Nothing but sand, no real signs of life and then all of a sudden up to 300,000 cape fur seals . They’ve got themselves quite a colony going on here. This is Cape Cross and this is where the first European feet touched Namibian soil. They belonged to the Portuguese explorer Diego Cáo who wandered by in 1486.

The seals are a sight. Very loud, very smelly, with thick fur and luscious layers of blubber. And boy do they relish the icy waters off Namibia. The broad flat beaches work for them too - good for noticing approaching predators. Females give birth to a single pup in November/December ; conceived right here the year before. You will see thousands of pups each with their own call which their mother recognises. Hopefully. They can’t swim till they’re two months old either so they’re pretty vulnerable, especially when their mothers are at sea, sometimes for days on end. Jackals and the rare brown hyena prey on them. Cape Cross is about 140km north of Swakopmund.

3. From Seal City to Shark Central - Henties Bay

Skeleton Coast inline image 5ddf7f560aa1f

Now this is the place to be if you’re an angler or fancy your chances. Fishing here is excellent. Copper and cow sharks provide the sport while line fish include kob, steenbras, blackfish and blacktail. Henties Bay is 70 km north of Swakopmund and shark angling trips tend to be from November to May. You may also see smooth hound sharks and spotted gully sharks.

You'll find many rudimentary fishing camps in the recreation area up to the Ugab River, which marks the southern boundary of the Skeleton Coast Park. The beaches are wide and open and you can take your 4x4 with you. For rock and surf angling your best bet is to come from the end of January to April.

Namibia is one of the few countries in the world which is strict about shark conservation. No shark may be taken for a trophy, or be left on the beach. All sharks must be returned to the sea alive and unharmed. And remember, get your fishing permit.

4. Scoff Up Spätzle and Wolf Down Schnitzel - Swakopmund

Skeleton Coast inline image 5ddf7f6264e1e

Like a mirage Swakopmund appears to offer welcome relief from the stark desert coastline. This little gem is Namibia’s favourite seaside town, it’s also Namibia’s biggest coastal town and an ideal base for a range of adrenaline activities .

Swakopmund is unmistakably an ex-colony of the German Empire. You will see German influences everywhere from architecture, to road signs, food to beer. Lots of German cakes too. And lots of Germans, both residents and visitors. Things really boomed here until the outbreak of World War I. This interrupted the construction of the massive pier which remains one of the city's main sights. Swakopmund has mock Tudor builldings, Bavarian spires... palm trees. But just because you are next to the desert don’t expect it to be scorching here. Mornings are nippy and damp from the heavy sea mist. That’s because the heat of the desert sweeps over the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean and a heavy, cold coastal fog forms. Still, the beach sand is soft and there is a summer holiday vibe.

The warmest months are January, February and March and the most popular time (think busiest) is from September onwards. Swakop (as the locals call it) has restaurants, bars, a museum and a delightfully small aquarium. Adrenaline activities are on the menu aplenty. Everything from kite surfing and kayaking to sky diving and quad biking. For calmer trips try a dolphin cruise or hot air balloon across the dunes.

5. Walk Like a Flamingo - Walvis Bay

Skeleton Coast inline image 5ddf7f6266b33

Now this is the big guy if you like your waterfowl. The Walvis Bay wetlands and Sandwich Harbour lagoons are RAMSAR sites , in other words, wetlands of international importance. Just 35km south of Swakop is this oasis of calm. The lagoon sustains vast flocks of flamingoes, low-flying pelicans and huge numbers of waders. We’re talking tens of thousands. Most migrants fly in between November and April.

The other main attraction here is the dunes. And the big one is Dune 7 . It’s the tallest dune in the coastal area and yes you can climb it. In fact, please climb it, it’s a stunner but go early in the morning to avoid a beating from the sun.

Incredibly, desert-adapted flora, fauna and even wildlife is rife in the dunes. There are lichens , which are actually a symbiotic relationship of fungi and algae, the famous welwitschia grows in the desert and you could see kudu, gemsbok, springbok, steenbok, genet and wild cat.

Also, head to the salt pans to see if the lakes are pink. The water is full of plankton and the crusty salt is often rose tinted. Nicknamed the Pink Salt Lakes they are stunners and their photograph has beautified many a social media post.

You can also find adrenaline activities in Walvis Bay and there is a plethora of marine life to enjoy - either alongside in the ocean or from the comfort of a cruise.

6. Sand Giants Running to the Sea - Sandwich Harbour

Skeleton Coast inline image 5ddf7f74943a5

This place is like nowhere on Earth. Huge, towering, imposing sand dunes of up to 100m literally beside the seaside. It’s sand dune - ocean, no introduction, no pleasantries. Like the sea engulfing a sand giant. This then washes into a lagoon. You can’t even get there unless the weather and tides let you. This place is one of Southern Africa’s richest wetlands. Astonishingly, you will find a smattering of actual vegetation here. Nature has found a way, as she does. The underground aquifer quenches a band of dollar bushes and unpronounceable shrubbery along the base of the dunes.

Sandwich Harbour is 56km south of Walvis Bay. The harbour supports more than 50,000 birds in the summer and 20,000 in the winter, including Palaearctic waders and flamingos. You could also see jackal, springbok, oryx, brown hyena and ostrich.

Plant wise the !Nara plant is quite something. Endemic to the central Namib Desert, it can reach water more than 15m deep. It doesn’t have leaves but is a prickly old thing with yellowish flowers. It’s a type of melon which has been eaten locally for centuries and can live for over 100 years.

7. Diamond-wearing Ghosts - Luderitz

Skeleton Coast inline image 5ddf7f805cee9

Once a literal jewel in Namibia’s crown, Luderitz is the southernmost town on the Skeleton Coas t. It was also the first German settlement in the country and is named after its founder Adolf Luderitz.

It’s in the middle of nowhere - at the meeting of the Atlantic Ocean and an endless desert - and is famous for its diamond mining history. They were found in 1909 and people flocked to make their fortune .

A village was built 10km outside of Luderitz to accommodate the staff and families of the diamond company. It was called Kolmanskop . But when the diamonds dried up the community scarpered and now this place has been reclaimed by the desert. Literally. The sand fills the perfect buildings and a surreal ghost town emerges.

Like Swakopmund, there’s still a huge German influence in Luderitz. German architecture, street names and bratwurst. There’s a museum too which focuses on the diamond mining past as well as local and natural history. Halifax Island is nearby, a place cormorants and African penguins call home. And seals and pelicans live on the Shark Island peninsula.

Luderitz is also a windy place which attracts the world’s fastest kitesurfers in an annual speed challenge on a purpose-built run. Button down your hat and coat.

Oh, and here’s a final point to muse over... diamonds are still found here, not in the desert but in the sea. All that wind has blown them in and they’ve ended up on the ocean floor. Fishermen here use nets and rods in their search for treasure . Let us know if you get lucky... then treat yourself to a super yacht.

Skeleton Coast National Park

Quick navigation.

Skeleton Coast National Park is located along the shoreline of northwest Namibia .  The park covers an area of 6,504 square miles (16,845 sq km).  This coastal region is one of the most inaccessible shores and shipwrecks are scattered across the area.

The remoteness, inaccessibility, and collection of ruins from wrecked ships make the name apropos for the park.  There are over 1,000 remains of wrecked shipping vessels scattered along the coast.

Locals often ascribe this saying about the park, “The Land God Made in Anger.”  The name was actually derived from the skeletons of whales and seals scattered across the shoreline from the whaling industry.

The national park is separated into two distinct regions.  The southern region is where the majority of activity occurs where four-wheel-drive vehicles are permitted to travel about the park and explore the region. Any vehicle that approaches the north will be greeted by a skull-and-crossbones sign deterring any further advancement.

Vehicles are prohibited from accessing the northern region of the park.  Visitors must take advantage of one of the fly-in tours.  The shoreline features a consistent heavy surf.  Ships often became stranded because they could reach the shore, but the conditions would not allow a ship to launch back out to sea.

The majority of the coastline is soft sand with periodic rocky outcrops.  Gravel plains are found in areas of the southern part of the park.  The higher dunes are located in the northern part of the park.  The northern area is also well-known for its large population of seals.

The northern region of the park features the ephemeral Hoarusib River, the salt pans of the Agate Mountains, and Cape Fria.  The population of seals noted above may be found in the Cape Fria area.  The area is designated as a wilderness area and this is where wildlife may be found.

Some of the popular species include lion, giraffe, elephant, hyena, black rhinoceros, springbok, and baboon.

Skeleton Coast National Park

It is an intriguing national park when some of the highlights are identified as shipwrecks and a collapsed oil drilling rig.  Some of the most popular shipwrecks include:

  • Eduard Bohlen
  • Benguela Eagle
  • Dunedin Star

The northern region of the park is a highlight for most because you have to fly in to experience it as well as this is the region of the park which has the best chances of seeing wildlife.  This northern part is also more picturesque with the canyon and river landscapes as well as the taller dunes along the coast.

Skeleton Coast National Park Trails

The park is not known for trails but there are desert walks, beach walks, and some trails that allow you to see some of the park while on foot.

Ugab River Trail

This is a challenging trail and the recommendation is that you be an experienced hiker.  It is a three-day/two-night outing that meanders inland along the Ugab River Canyon and up to some natural springs.  Along with the landscapes of the canyon, you will have chances to see wildlife and vegetation that has adapted to the harsh conditions.

Trail placeholder image

Park Protection

Skeleton Coast National Park was created to protect the unique region of the coastal shoreline and the wilderness area in the northern region which is home to an array of wildlife.

The national park is protecting the endangered black rhinoceroses as well as elephants and other wildlife.  The park is also important from an ecological research perspective as scientists want to learn more about how wildlife has adapted to these harsh conditions.

Namibia Helicopter Tours

Namibia, a land of remarkable contrasts and stunning landscapes, offers a unique opportunity for travelers to experience its natural beauty from an entirely different perspective – a helicopter tour. Among the many destinations in Namibia , two standout attractions are Sandwich Harbour and Swakopmund , each offering its own set of breathtaking sights and experiences. Let’s commence a thrilling journey through the skies as we explore these two extraordinary locations in Namibia.

Namibia Helicopter Tours

Sandwich Harbour Helicopter Tours

The journey begins as you ascend above the sand dunes of the Namib Desert. These dunes, some of the highest in the world, take on a fiery, burnt-orange hue beneath the brilliant African sun. Their endless expanse seems almost surreal from above, with ripples and waves sculpted by the relentless winds. As your helicopter approaches the coastline, you’ll be spellbound by the stark transition where the colossal dunes abruptly meet the roaring waves of the Atlantic Ocean. The sand dunes appear to cascade directly into the deep blue sea, creating a unique and dramatic vista. Overhead, flocks of flamingos and pelicans glide in harmonious formation, while other exotic bird species create a vibrant mosaic on the mirror-like surface of the lagoon. This delicate ecosystem, where desert meets ocean, provides essential sustenance for countless migratory birds and is a feast for the eyes. The contrast between the rich, earthy tones of the dunes and the deep blues and greens of the ocean and lagoon forms a striking natural masterpiece. Gazing down, you’ll witness an awe-inspiring spectacle: seal colonies basking on the rocky outcrops and playing in the shallows. The helicopter’s vantage point allows you to see these marine mammals in their natural habitat, their sleek, glistening bodies in stark contrast to the rugged coastline.

Swakopmund Helicopter Tours

Continuing on your aerial odyssey, you’ll arrive in Swakopmund, a coastal town that seems to emerge from the desert itself. The desert’s sandy expanse surrounds the town, setting it against a backdrop of surreal dunes that stretch as far as the eye can see. The seamless blend of arid terrain with the lapping waters of the Atlantic Ocean is nothing short of mesmerizing. Approaching Swakopmund, the iconic Swakopmund Jetty comes into view. This historic structure extends gracefully into the ocean, telling stories of a bygone era when trade ships anchored here. The jetty appears like a portal between two worlds, where the sands of the desert meet the azure depths of the ocean. From the helicopter, it’s a picture-perfect scene, a reminder of Swakopmund’s rich maritime heritage. The town itself unfolds below, revealing a network of quaint streets adorned with charming cafes, boutique shops, and beautifully manicured gardens. The picturesque landscape highlights the town’s unique blend of colonial architecture, lush greenery, and pristine beaches, making it a delightful spot for visitors.

The Skeleton Coast

For those seeking a more extended adventure, helicopter tours often extend to the enigmatic Skeleton Coast. This desolate and haunting stretch of coastline lives up to its name with a stark, eerie beauty. As you fly above, you’ll witness the juxtaposition of desolation and life, with the skeletal remains of long-forgotten ships and the occasional whale skeleton contrasting against the vast, empty beaches.

Sossusvlei and Deadvlei

Located in the heart of the Namib Desert, Sossusvlei is known for its towering red sand dunes and the iconic Deadvlei with its ancient, gnarled trees. A helicopter flight over this area provides a remarkable perspective of these surreal landscapes.

Fish River Canyon

The Fish River Canyon is the second-largest canyon in the world, after the Grand Canyon in the United States. Helicopter tours over the canyon offer panoramic views of its rugged terrain, meandering river, and unique geological formations.

Damaraland is characterized by its dramatic landscapes, including granite peaks, rocky outcrops, and vast desert vistas. A helicopter tour allows you to explore the region’s diverse terrain, spot wildlife, and discover ancient rock engravings.

Etosha National Park

Etosha is one of Africa’s premier wildlife destinations, and a helicopter tour can provide a bird’s-eye view of the park’s vast salt pans, waterholes, and diverse wildlife, including elephants, lions, and rhinos.

Located in the remote northwest of Namibia, Kaokoland is a land of remote wilderness and stunning contrasts. Helicopter flights over this region offer a unique perspective of its rugged mountains, desert landscapes, and isolated Himba villages.

Epupa Falls

Located in the northwestern corner of Namibia, the Epupa Falls are a series of picturesque waterfalls on the Kunene River. Helicopter flights can provide a spectacular view of the falls and the surrounding desert scenery.

Keep in mind that the availability of helicopter tours in some of these locations may vary, and it’s advisable to book in advance. These tours offer a unique way to explore Namibia’s diverse landscapes and wildlife, making your visit to this remarkable country even more unforgettable. Namibia helicopter tours offer an immersive experience that unveils the country’s extraordinary beauty in the most spectacular way. From the dunes of Sandwich Harbour to Swakopmund and the Skeleton Coast, these tours bring Namibia’s diverse landscapes to life. When you embark on one of these helicopter tours, you’ll be treated to an unforgettable experience, filled with a symphony of colors, textures, and contrasts. As you soar above the landscapes, the enchantment and grandeur of Namibia will unfold before your eyes, leaving you with indelible memories of this unique country. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the magic of Namibia from a fresh perspective on a helicopter tour, and savor the vivid beauty of this land of contrasts.

The Perfect Namibia Itinerary for 7 Days

skeleton coast helicopter tour

When you think about Namibia tours, you obviously think about Africa. And when we think about Africa we think about safari, right? Yes me too! But let me tell you Namibia is not only about safari. In fact some of the best tourist spots in Namibia have nothing to do with wildlife. What about Skeleton Coast, Namib Desert, the incredible sand dunes and Sossusvlei and Deadvlei?

All amazing things to do in Namibia, but is it possible to see all of them in a Namibia itinerary for 7 days? Yes it is!

Starting your trip to Namibia in Windhoek? Then I am sure you want to know about these 19 Things To Do in Windhoek . My suggested itinerary 1 day sightseeing in Windhoek is as follows:

  • Morning: Free Walking Tour
  • Afternoon: Lunch with Giraffes
  • Evening: Sundowner at Hilton Sky Bar

Click on the link for all my Windhoek travel tips.

Even better: in this itinerary for 1-week in Namibia I will also include some cultural activities and of course safari. Discover Namibia with this perfect route if you only have 7 days. Renting a car is one of the options to get around in Namibia , but you can also hitchhike (click on the link for an hilarious video of me hitch hiking).

Day 1: Etosha National Park

etosha national park game Drives

When you arrive at Windhoek Airport make sure you somehow stay connected. Get yourself an e-sim card or a local prepaid sim card for Namibia to avoid crazy roaming costs. Having a data connection will help you a lot navigating through the country. Windhoek is about 50 kilometers away from the airport and there is nothing special to see so my advice is to rent a car at Windhoek Airport and discover Namibia straight away. Drive North towards Etosha National Park. On your way buy supplies for 3 days on the road if you are on a self-driving Namibia road trip.

Game drives start right after the entrance and within 5 minutes I already saw zebras, giraffes and several antelopes.

If you are in time enter the National Park and stay overnight in one of the many campgrounds. These places also have rooms available. Choose one with a 24-hour waterhole so that you can watch wildlife in the middle of the night by yourself.

Etosha National Park accommodation options

  • Etosha Village - $175 (just outside the park entrance with amazing buffets)
  • Okutala Etosha Lodge - $250
  • Safarihoek Lodge - $400
  • Emanya @ Etosha - $110
  • Mondjila Safari Camp - $90

Day 2: Explore Etosha National Park

On day 2 of this Namibia itinerary you will have the whole day to search wildlife. If you are self driving I recommend you to bring lunch and eat it in your car. Every waterhole has ‘parking spots’ or a cool thing to do is to head out to the Etosha Pan, which can’t be missed. At this place, that looks like the end of the world, you are allowed to exit your car, but be aware that there is zero shade. Keep on exploring the Etosha National Park until the sun goes down and the park closes.

I hope you saw big cats by now. I failed in my mission to find leopards, lions or cheetahs though still had a great time in Etosha National Park. Even without seeing them it was worth it to visit Namibia. Watching wildlife is just one of those amazing cool things to do in this country.

Day 3: Head to the Skeleton Coast

namibia roadtrip 2

If you decided to stay overnight inside Etosha National Park then use this morning for another short game drive, but start making your way towards the Skeleton Coast in time. The drive from Etosha to the Skeleton Coast is long and roads are not paved. Be prepared for a long day on the road. Distances are massive, you will find out sooner or later when you visit Namibia.

namibia itinerary 1

To break the long journey stop along the way at local villages. If you are keen on buying souvenirs or take photos with local tribes in traditional outfits this is your chance. Along the route you will find the Nama, Himba and the Herero tribes. The last ones are those typical Bushmen tribes with hardly any clothes on.

namibia roadtrip 1

Even some cultural activities are present in this 7 days itinerary for Namibia.

namibia tours 1

Once you arrive at the skeleton coast marvel at the beautiful scenery where the desert meets the ocean.

The Skeleton Coast is super rough and some parts are off-limit for vehicles. I don’t have that many Namibia travel tips for the Skeleton Coast, as it seems pretty inaccessible. There are scenic flights from what I heard as well as some lodges that have day trips around their lodge with 4x4 jeeps.

Accommodation in the Skeleton Coast:

Luxury: Wilderness Safaris Hoanib Skeleton Coast

Mid-range: Cape Cross Lodge

Day 4: Swakopmund

After three days on the road you might want a day with not that much driving so staying over night in the sleepy but very laid-back city of Swakopmund is great to slow down a little. Stop at some shipwrecks along the Skeleton Coast before you drive into town.

Grab a coffee at Slow Town Coffee, a very charming coffee place with the best coffee on this Namibia itinerary. In the afternoon make time for some cool things to in Swakopmund like: sandboarding, scenic flight over the Skeleton Coast, hot air balloon, helicopter ride or quad biking. All of these activities can easily be arranged from you hotel.

Stroll down the pier around sunset to see the sun go down in the ocean. If you rather sip a cocktail for sunset go to Strand Hotel Swakopmund.

Accommodation in Swakopmund

Luxury: Strand Hotel (4 star hotel, rooms with ocean and sunset view, balconies, beautiful rooms, best location right on the beach)

Mid-range:  Hotel A La Mer (great location next to the pier, cheap, very good reviews) I stayed here too for 1 night. Driftwood Guesthouse (new modern guesthouse, great to meet people, everyone is raving about it).

A little more out of town, but perfect if you are doing this 7 days Namibia itinerary with your own car is Desert Breeze Lodge . You will love this place, have a look at the pictures!

Day 5: Drive towards Sossusvlei

Today you will have to cover a lot of ground again. The ride through the desert seems boring at first, but on your way towards the Naukluft-Namib National Park marvelous landscapes will unfold in front of you. This drive is one of the reasons why you should visit Namibia. Stop for some photos along the way and drive safely, because there are no paved roads in this part of the country.

namibia itinerary 2

You will pass through canyons and also find the Tropic of Capricorn on your way. One of the standard tourist spots in Namibia to take photos.

namibia tours 2

Your goal today is to get close to the National Park entrance for Sossusvlei because that is where you want to go early tomorrow morning. Get to your accommodation in time for sunset, because here in the middle of the desert you will surely have amazing sunsets.

Accommodation in Sossusvlei

I would really recommend you to stay at Desert Quiver Camp if your budget allows you to do so. This magical place feels and looks like the middle of nowhere but is only 5 kilometer away from the Sossusvlei National Park entrance. The spectacular desert pool is a unique spot.

namibia travel 3

  • Sossusvlei Lodge - $250
  • Moon Mountain Lodge - $250
  • Agama River Camp - $220
  • Le Mirage Resort & Spa - $250

namibia travel 1

  • Desert Camp - $100
  • Soft Adventure Camp - $100

Day 6: Sossusvlei

namibia travel 2

Time is flying and this is already your last full day if you are on a 1 week itinerary in Namibia. But don’t worry I saved the best for last and today you have to make an early start if you want to beat the heat. On the program today will be the famous and probably the most well-known tourist spots in Namibia: Deadvlei and the sand dunes.

The park opens just before sunrise and you are probably not the only one who wants to enter then so go early. It is still a good 45 minutes drive till you reach Sossusvlei and are able to start hiking the big sand dune called Big Daddy. Definitely hike to the top and run down towards Deadvlei. It honestly is not too hard, just bring water and take your time. Deadvlei itself is simply unbelievable. If you don’t mind the heat then come a little later after all the early morning tourists are gone and you will have Deadvlei for yourself.

namibia travel blog 2

Before you leave the park also go see Dune 45, a popular dune to hike up and it only takes around 15 minutes. You can basically climb any dune you fancy along the way, there are no restrictions or whatsoever.

Additional activities in Sossusvlei:

  • Visit the canyon
  • Early morning balloon ride

Day 7: Back to Windhoek

Wake up in time if your flight is early. Driving from Sossusvlei to Windhoek is not too long, but definitely a good 4 hours. If time permits stop in Solitaire, a seemingly deserted desert town. Here you will find an excellent German bakery with bad coffee. If you are still up for some activities then spend $17 towards the NCCC and go to see cheetahs up close and personal. Tours start from Solitaire and take 1 hour only.

namibia itinerary 3

With this 1-week itinerary for Namibia you basically see the best tourists spots in Namibia. Wildlife in Etosha National Park, The Skeleton Coast, The Namib Desert, some tribes along the way, the famous orange dunes and the impressive Deadvlei.

If this 1 week route for Namibia is not enough for you yet then check out this amazing lodge on the rim of the Fish River Canyon crater . Hiking in Fish River Canyon is another unique thing to do in Namibia.

Namibia is the second least densely populated country on earth and when you travel to Namibia you will find out why. Distances are long and you will have to be ready to drive a lot with nothing in and between but fantastic landscapes. Roads can be really bad and most parts of this 1-week itinerary for Namibia contains unpaved roads.

namibia itinerary 7 days

Don’t underestimate driving on gravel roads. Drive safely as this country is also notorious for traffic accidents. Always make sure you carry enough water with you and bring your own supplies. On this trip through Namibia there are only a few opportunities to go to a supermarket.

  • Day 4 – Dunes

  • Day 6 – Wildlife – Shipwreck

Itinerary in details

We could list our destination names here, but as we are going into no-mans land, the names of the places don’t carry much meaning to someone who doesn’t know the desert intimately. Furthermore, we are playing our cards close to our chests otherwise there will be 50 photo tours into this desert in the following year as all the operators are desperate for a new destination in Namibia. What we can tell you is the following –

Day 1 –  All participants will be received at Walvis Bay airport and taken to our guesthouse on the lagoon. Once checked in, we’ll do a briefing on the days to come as there is a lot of important information to share. Once the briefing is done we’ll go for dinner and make sure we get to bed early.

Day 2 –  Starting before sunrise, we will travel inland and enter the desert from the East in order to give you a feeling for how the dunes change from East to West and show you many of the desert’s incredible and unique attractions along the way. We will either camp at a beautiful high viewpoint of the coastal dunes or next to a shipwreck on the beach.

Day 3 – The mornings will start very early as our astro shoots will happen primarily in the mornings, when the milky way is on the western horizon. After sunrise and breakfast, we will move south, passing several abandoned diamond mining towns, but our aim is a special area of the desert with colourful dunes, amazing wind-eroded boulders and lots of quartz-rich sand that makes amazing macro-ripples.

Day 4 –  After another early start for astro and sunrise, we will head West, passing the Eduard Bohlen, to a stunning section of the coast with very high dunes that overlook the sea with great panoramic vistas. This is a short driving day, which will give us a relaxing afternoon to nap, shoot or enjoy some G&T’s.

Day 5 – Following another early morning, we’ll drive north towards an area with incredible wildlife, including flamingoes and pelicans as far as the eye can see, other birdlife including dune larks and jackal, oryx and hopefully brown hyena. This is another short day of driving and once camp is setup, we can go in search of wildlife either on foot or by car.

Day 6 – Our fifth day is a contingency day that will be allocated by popular demand. We can either use it as a 2nd day at the wildlife destination or to return to the shipwreck in case the mist spoiled our astro photos on the first attempt.

Day 7 – On the final day we’ll shoot sunrise, have breakfast and we should be back in Walvis Bay around noon. After washing the sand out of our everythings, we’ll go for a big lunch, followed by a download and editing session.

Day 8 –  On the 8th day we’ll get everyone back to the Walvis Bay airport in time for their flights out.

Skeleton Coast  4x4 Expedition

8 day skeleton coast guided self-drive expedition.

Departing from Swakopmund, we head to the Ugab gate, the entry point into the Skeleton Coast National Park. From here we continue to Terrace Bay where we fill up our vehicles  and then leave  civilization behind us for the next 8 days!

As we make our way through the park we put our fully laden vehciles to the test. Riverbeds, soft sand and dunes all stand between us and the iconic Kunene River Mouth .  We pass interesting  sites along the way as our guide feeds us with information on our surroundings and also gives advice and guidance on how to get the most out of your vehicle in this daunting terreain.

Reaching the Kunene Mouth we get to relax a bit as we make camp for two nights in the majestic dunes.  Here we spend some time  appreciating the beauty of nature and the peace and tranquility of the desert.

From here we head east along the mighty Kunene through some of the most deceitful dunes in Namibia, a real test to the drivers, co-pilots and vehicles!   We then turn south through the Hartmansvalley, uniquely beautiful and desolate.

Our tour ends at the little Himba village of Puros, where we will be on the lookout for the desert adapted Elephants of the Hoarusib river.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
