How to travel around Bristol

Travelling Around Bristol

Making your way around a city you’re unfamiliar with can be incredibly daunting. From finding out the different public transport options to knowing the services provided by various companies, researching your choices can be a time consuming and confusing task. Luckily for you, we’ve compiled this list of the best methods of travelling around the Bristol streets – all the inside tips and tricks can be found right here.

Getting to Bristol

Before you can figure out which form of transport is going to be the best for you to use throughout your trip, let’s look at the options for travelling to Bristol as some offer combination travel tickets which could save you some cash.

If you’re travelling in from further afield, flying into Bristol Airport is a good option. You can then get to the city centre using the Air Connect Bus service, this runs 24/7 every 20 minutes during the day and at hourly intervals throughout the night – an Air Connect single ticket to the city centre cost £6.50

Read more about Air Connect and view timetables.

Many people opt to ride the train into Bristol; if you do, this is a brilliant choice. With the city centre just a 15-minute walk away from Bristol Temple Meads station, it couldn’t be easier to get a jump start on your trip. Although Temple Meads is the main station in Bristol, the Bristol Parkway rail station means you have even more choice as to where you want to begin your travels. When buying your ticket, you have the option to purchase the PlusBus ticket which combines bus travel around Bristol with your train fare (detailed a little later on…)

If you’re driving into Bristol and want to spend the day in your own car or want to park up and explore on foot, then fear not, because Bristol has plenty of car parks, in convenient locations, including right by Millennium Square.

Bristol Parking Map

Read: Where To Park In Bristol For Free, For Cheap or For 24 Hours.

There are numerous bus services available within Bristol, with some great value deals to enable you to explore all day long without breaking the bank.

Park & Ride

This bus system is nice and simple. If you have driven into Bristol, you can park your car and then ride the bus around Bristol – hence the name Park and Ride. The car park, with this system, is free, you just have to pay for the bus, which can be as frequent as every twelve minutes. There are four Park and Ride car parks in Bristol:

  • Portway Park and Ride - (Bristol, North West. BS11 9QE)
  • Long Ashton Park and Ride (Bristol, South West. BS3 2HB)
  • Brislington Park and Ride (Bristol, South East. BS4 5RU)
  • Lyde Green Park and Ride (Bristol, North East. BS16 7GG)

Freedom Travel Pass

The Freedom Travel Pass is a wonderful option that allows you to have unlimited travel across the majority of bus, and rail services within Bristol. This is available when you travel with First, a bus company that facilitates travel between Bristol, Bath and the West.

A Freedom Travel Pass is available for purchase from the Ticket Office at any station, alternatively, if you only need a day pass, tickets can be purchased from a bus driver. This is a handy system which eliminates the need for searching for change each time you board.

When you buy your pass, you need to specify which ‘zones’ you want to travel in. If you are only travelling within central Bristol, then it is nice and simple – you need Zone A (or Zone A and B if you are heading to the South West of Bristol).

A combination of other zones mean you can travel between Bristol, Bath, Weston-super-Mare, Nailsea and Yatton. Prices are dependent on which zones you need to be able to reach, and how many days you are buying a pass for.

Zone A (Bristol) for a one-day pass is only £6, and Zone A B (‘Bristol Plus’) can be bought for just £11.50.

Find out more and plan your journey here.

south west travel bristol

Similarly, to the Freedom Travel Pass, opting for the PlusBus option means you don’t need to think about keeping bus fare on your person. The difference between the PlusBus and the Freedom Travel Card is that with the PlusBus, you buy a train ticket and then add the bus ticket as an extra. This gives you unlimited bus and tram travel on top of your train ticket; it isn’t restricted at peak times – you can use it whenever you fancy. In a nutshell, the PlusBus is a discounted price travel card.

PlusBus is available in many destinations, and prices vary from location to location.

For Bristol, a day price is £4.50 for an adult, £2.25 for a child and £3.95 for a railcard holder; tickets are also available on a weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual basis.

This works out cheaper than simply paying bus fare each trip you take – an added bonus because we all love a good saving.

To get your hands on a PlusBus ticket, simply ask for PlusBus when you buy your initial train ticket. As with the bog-standard train ticket, you can pay for your PlusBus with cash, credit card or debit card. That does mean you will need to plan ahead a little but, hey, that’s why you’re here now!

My recommendation for PlusBus is that it is perfect for people who have travelled into Bristol on the train. It costs just a little extra than your train ticket but is ultimately a cheap travel option to get around Bristol. All your transport on one ticket – efficient!

The Free Bus is exactly what it says on the tin – a free bus ride.

The Free Bus runs continuously on Saturdays from Bristol Temple Meads, through to the city centre, and to the Temple Meads Train Station. Rinse and repeat, all day long.

This is a brilliant option if you only need to get yourself around on a Saturday and are aiming to get to the city centre. If you can’t afford alternate options, or perhaps only need a short journey but cannot walk too far, then the Free Bus may just be the ticket.

The Free Bus has no fare whatsoever, as it is kept going via donations. The aim is to expand the network to the towns surrounding the city, with the profit-making bus routes taking you in and out of the city centre itself.

The metrobus has direct routes through key tourist spots, such as Brunel’s SS Great Britain, and has many stops that make it great for visitors, such as the train stations. However, the main attraction of the metrobus is that it is speedier than a regular bus – a real time saver is great for making the most out of your time in Bristol, whether that’s fitting more into a day trip or getting a short commute to work.

The metrobus has quicker boarding, due to their ‘buy before you board’ system, at an iPoint station. Passengers use iPoint to buy tickets, plan journeys, and get live updates as to how the buses are running that day and hour. Since people have pre-paid and purchased their tickets, the waiting between stops is significantly reduced.

This is, in my opinion, the most accessible of the bus options available. The buses have twin doors, low floors, wide corridors, more leg room and a larger entrance and exit space – this makes it an excellent choice for those with reduced mobility, or who have pushchairs. These features all make for minimal time in between spots, as well as quicker and hassle-free boarding.

Even more good news, the metrobus’ euro 6 Diesel engine emits fewer emissions than alternate travel options, meaning the metrobus systems are an environmentally friendly option, aiding to improve air quality in Bristol.

For the tech savvy among us, it’ll be great news that not only does the metrobus have free wifi and USB charging, but that you can hold your ticket on the First Bus app. But for us more traditional folk, a paper ticket is available too – don’t panic!

Prices for the metrobus are as follows: a single adult ticket is £2.25, students and 16 to 21-year-old travel for £1.60, 5 to 15-year-olds (child’s ticket) costs just £1.15, and under 5’s travel for free. Daily, weekly and monthly tickets are also available.

Yet another cashless travel system is available, this time it’s the Travelwest Travel card, which you can use through the First Bus app, and allows you to book your metrobus ticket in advance. You can also hold your ticket here.

Sometimes the easiest way to get yourself from A to B is just good old driving. From taxis to car hire, Bristol has you covered. Once again, there are plenty of options that will allow you to make the most out of visiting Bristol.

Car Hire & Car Clubs

Bristol has plenty of car hire companies, for example Sixt Car Hire and Rhino Car Hire. These cars are available to hire from plenty of locations, including Bristol Airport, so you won’t be short for options. There are also services in Bristol that allow you to hire a car by the hour. This means you are entirely in control, don’t hire the vehicle for hours you won’t be using it, and you don’t need to rely on public transport if you don’t want to. Reputable companies where you can do this include Zip Car and City Car Club.

This system is described as an Airbnb for cars. The premise is simply that people who need a vehicle, can rent a car or a van from one Bristol’s residents. This system is available across the city, at any time of the day. Karshare is great because the insurance is included in the displayed prices, so it is obvious and clear what you will be paying. Furthermore, the on-demand access means you only pay when you need the vehicle, giving you more flexibility around your day. A great element to Karshare is that you are supporting the community, as your money goes to the resident who owns the car. You can book a car through the Karshare app. Quick and easy! Rental durations start at four hours.

Best Taxi Company In Bristol

An age-old solution to getting around somewhere unfamiliar is, of course, the taxi. Bristol has two types of taxis: Hackney Carriage Vehicles and Private hire. Hackney Carriage Vehicles are the classic Bristol blue. The Braxi app lets you book these in advance, you can hail them (hold up your arm) or wait at a taxi rank. This also means you are supporting local Bristol residents, as all are licensed by Bristol City Council. The alternate taxi choice is a private hire. These must be booked and cannot be hailed, unlike the Hackney Carriage Vehicles. Some private taxi companies in and around Bristol are: V cars (who also have an app you can pre-book through), Eurotaxis and AA taxis.

Check our our top picks for the best taxi companies in Bristol.

Chauffeur & Private Hire

Perhaps you have a special event and want to feel like a VIP, or maybe you just want to travel in style. Either way, this is another great option to get around Bristol. A private hire also makes a smooth sailing transfer from hotels to the airport or train stations. Sybaris Chauffers have excellent reviews.

Bristol is, of course, a well-known for cycling and the many cycle paths and bike hires help Bristol maintain this reputation. With cycle routes by nearly all major roads, it shouldn’t be a surprise that throughout Bristol you’ll find plenty of places to secure and lock up your bike. Bristol houses over 300 bicycle parking spaces and has plenty of bike pumps you can use free of charge. So, get pedalling!

south west travel bristol

If you don’t have a bike of your own, or perhaps didn’t feel like lugging it all the way to Bristol, then rest assured that there are plenty of places to hire a bike from throughout the city.

Webbs Cycle Shop & Custom Bike Hire sell and hire bikes. They also have a ‘custom hire service’ aimed at groups – a brilliant choice if you’re visiting Bristol with your family or a few friends.

Pedal Progression offer services where you can hire accessories, have your bike repaired or even learn some bike skills – so you can enjoy the scenic cycle routes regardless of your ability.

If the classic, regular bike isn’t what you’re after, then you can also find Bristol Tandem Hire or Bristol Electric Bike Hire. There are plenty of options to cater towards all kinds of cyclists, so don’t be put off checking out the routes.

Where to hire a bike in Bristol

Finding cycle routes.

Bristol is home to some stunning routes and cycle paths – but choosing the best one may be a little tricky. Whether your concern is the length and how uphill that trail might be, which sights you can pass along the way or where the route takes you, there are a variety of routes depending on what it is that you’re after.

Better by Bike , Sustrans, and Cycle Streets all offer handy maps and details of different routes you can take. Check them out to see where you can get to, and what you can see on two wheels.

Sightseeing By Bike

Riding your bike in Bristol can be so much more than getting from place A to place B. Organised tours, such as with the Adventurous Activity Company, let you see some of the wonders of Bristol from the seat of your bike.

Mountain Biking

Off-road cycling and mountain biking are popular choices in Bristol too. Cycling trial, Avon Timberland is a fantastic choice if you’re looking for a mountain bike experience; it remains an authentic experience whilst also preserving environmentally sensitive areas. Other fantastic off-road cycling options are Ashton Court and Leigh Woods.

Bike-Friendly Accommodation

Thanks to Bristol being a cycling city, there are numerous places where you can both lay your head and park up your bike. Some accommodations will offer to wash your bike, complete any necessary repairs, and some even offer discounts and packed lunches for cyclists. You can find out more about these spaces at the Beds For Cyclists webpage .

Bike-Friendly Cafés

After a long bike ride, I, for one, am always ready for a nibble and a cuppa; here are some fantastic cafés where you can ditch the bike for a short while.

The Mud Dock Café is a cycling themed café, they offer a repair service, and facilities for a shower after a particularly gruelling bike ride. Once you’re freshened up, sit back with a coffee or a beer before you get going again.

No1. Harbourside has excellent cycle parking available, and The Crofters Rights has bike storage available inside of the pub itself – so you don’t have to worry about its whereabouts.

south west travel bristol

Transport in Bristol extends beyond getting from one place to the next, with some boat trips available to take you across the harbour. Number 7 boat trips are more of a sight-seeing excursion than a quick, practical form of travel – but why not combine seeing the harbour and getting around together?

With Number 7 Beeses River Trips, fares are as follows: £16 for an adult, £14 for a senior, £10.50 for a 7 to 16-year-old, and £6.50 for 4 to 6-year-olds.

Check the latest timetables, services updates and book tickets here.

Bristol Ferry Boats

Safe & happy travels.

With so many choices to travel around Bristol, you are sure to find a way that works for you, whether prices, independence or flexibility factor in, there is bound to be an option that works with what you’re after. From the wide variety of public transport, to the handy bike paths, getting around for someone who isn’t familiar in the city isn’t difficult to fathom out at all. With such brilliant choices, don’t be afraid to give them a go.

The best places to visit in south west england.

south west travel bristol

When I returned to England in 2020 after getting a repatriation flight home from Mexico (we all know what happened there…), I moved back to the West Country.

I’ve spent a lot of my adult life here – living in Bristol and Bath in my late teens/ early twenties and taking numerous trips to see family in Devon and Cornwall over the years.

My dad is a very proud Cornishman and I’ve always been meaning to get in touch with that side of my heritage. And now is the time.

I spent a year back in Bristol, and subsequently moved to Exmouth, where I live now.

I wanted to both help people plan trips to this part of the world but also document my cultural and historical findings here, and I decided this would be too big a project for this blog, where I focus on overland travel and local experience.

So I created a new website. It’s called Go South West , and I’d love for you to check it out. If I haven’t convinced you yet, have a read of the following to see some of the amazing places to visit in South West England…

south west travel bristol

This obviously comes at the top of the list, for so many reasons.

I went to university in Bristol, did an extra year partially because I didn’t want to leave, and when I did reluctantly leave, I vowed to return one day. In 2020, I did.

And, if that previous passage wasn’t enough of an incentive to make you want to visit Bristol, here are some more reasons. Bristol is a diverse, multicultural city filled with inspirational people.

There are several different regions, and all has its own charm. They include…

  • Clifton which is home to beautiful Georgian architecture and the world-famous suspension bridge
  • Stokes Croft which is adorned with street art
  • Gloucester Road which is home to the longest line of independent shops in the world
  • The Old City which still has its own medieval layout
  • The Harbourside with waterfront cafes and bars, boats, and picturesque vistas of coloured houses.

south west travel bristol

When I was dragged from Bristol, I moved an entire 13 miles down the road to Bath.

Bath didn’t capture me quite the same way that Bristol did, but it is without a doubt one of the best places to visit in South West England.

Bath is named so due to its famous natural phenomenon; it was home to Roman Baths back when they conquered England and has the only hot springs in the UK.

The city rose to fame once again in 973, when Edgar was crowned as the first King of all of England (before then the regions in the nation had been ruled separately).

Architects loved the city, and it’s also home to some beautiful Georgian buildings.

Jane Austen lived in the city back in the day, and while she apparently didn’t like the city, the houses that were built in her time have made it one of the country’s most loved tourist cities.

south west travel bristol

If you want a camping trip in the South West, but have no money, head to Dartmoor – it’s the only place in the UK where you can free camp anywhere – although this is currently being challenged and may change in the next year.

Of course, if you do this, please respect the place and take all of your rubbish with you.

Don’t fancy camping? There are plenty of places to stay in Dartmoor, including dog-friendly retreats and spa hotels.

Dartmoor is also famous for scenic villages, cream teas and friendly hospitality. Its moors are a fantastic place to go hiking, where you can look out for wild ponies, and there are plenty of trails to waterfalls and through woodland.

There are millenniums of years of history in Dartmoor – including woodland that is rumored to have been around since 7000 BC – and plenty of legends and fables to learn about.

south west travel bristol

It’s incredibly difficult to find just one Cornish seaside villages to put on this list of the best places to visit in South West England, so I’d highly recommend you go to them all – maybe by doing a road trip along the Cornish coastline.

However, Port Isaac is pretty delightful.

It’s the filming location for TV show Doc Martin, and while it is packed in the summer, brisk winter days are lovely for walking around the village’s historic houses.

The beaches in Cornwall are remarkable, and Port Isaac’s is no exception.

Bourton-on-the-Water

south west travel bristol

Like Cornwall, it was hard to just find one destination that’s worth visiting in the Cotswolds . This hilly area is dotted with historic villages and is a firm favourite for international tourists to the UK.

It’s not visited so much by domestic tourists though; and it definitely should be. Known as ‘The Venice of the Cotswolds’ because of the river meandering through, Bourton-on-the-Water is home to historic buildings housing cafes, restaurants, and pubs, as well as ancient churches. It is often voted ‘the prettiest village in the UK’, and it’s easy to see why.

You can do a day trip to the area, but I would recommend spending a bit longer – maybe doing a road trip around the Cotswolds to see all of it. Or you could base in a particular town or village, such as Bourton on the Water.

There are so many wonderful Airbnbs in the Cotswolds to enjoy country life for a while!

Quantock Hills

south west travel bristol

The Quantock Hills are an AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) in Somerset.

They are a very small range of 12×4 miles, but from the highest points they offer spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.

They are mainly heathland, ideal for trekking and mountain biking, and are home to lots of small country villages.

Isles of Scilly

Off of the British mainland are the Isles of Scilly .

Located in their own micro-climate, the archipelago offers island life which is unmatchable elsewhere in the country.

Life moves at a slower pace here, and there are gorgeous beaches, rugged cliffs, and azure waters just waiting to explore. Not to mention the uninhabited islands, which are left untouched for birds and wildlife.

It’s a British holiday like no other.

south west travel bristol

Exmouth’s my current home , although I’ve always had family living in the town.

Only when I returned did I appreciate its beauty and fortunate position, and how many things there are to do in Exmouth .

It’s at the meeting place of the Jurassic Coast – a 92 mile stretch that takes in some of the country’s best coastal views – and the Exe estuary, where the beach turns into river, the sides of which are home to a lot of unique flora and fauna.

Exmouth is also close to the East Devon moorland, which provides ample hiking opportunities and in and around local villages.

See you in the South West!

There are so many amazing places to visit in South West England, from bustling cities to small villages to the most spectacular countryside. Check out my new blog for more information about this region!

An Epic Itinerary for a South West England Road Trip

Uncover the ultimate South West England road trip itinerary and get ready to enjoy this destination to the fullest.

If you want to spend a bit of time outside of London on your next trip to England – or if you are British and want to see more of your own country, then South West England is waiting for you!

This part of the country is famous for its epic landscapes – from the cliffs of Cornwall to the dramatic Dartmoor – but it also has lots of history and towns and cities with excellent food scenes and culture.

There’s something for everyone in South West England – and the best way to see it is by a road trip!

Here’s a South West England road trip itinerary!

Places to visit on a South West England Road Trip

south west travel bristol

Bristol is an excellent place to begin your South West England road trip. This is the largest city in South West England and has plenty of attractions to enjoy on its own, but is also nestled in some beautiful British countryside.

How to get to Bristol

Bristol airport is connected to destinations around Europe. If you are traveling from London, you can easily rent a car and drive or take a bus or train between the two cities. Depending on your mode of transport and the traffic, it usually takes 2-3 hours to get between London and Bristol. Bristol is about 1.5 hours from Birmingham and 3-4 hours from Manchester.

There are lots of car hire places in Bristol, so you can rent a car from here for your road trip. However, it’s worth spending at least a day in Bristol (longer if you have it!) to see its main attractions. These include:

  • The SS Great Britain, which is a historic steam liner boat that is docked in Bristol’s dry dock.
  • The Clifton Suspension Bridge which sits dramatically over the deepest point of the Avon Gorge.
  • The street art of Stokes Croft and Southville.
  • Gloucester Road, which has the longest line of independent shops in the country.
  • The amazing food scene, with restaurants like Chilli Daddies (authentic Chinese hotpot), The Athenian (street food style Greek wraps), Cargo Cantina (Mexican tacos), and Beard Pizza.

Where to stay

Number 38 Bristol is a popular boutique hotel set in the beautiful suburb of Clifton.

Bristol to Tetbury – 45 minutes/ 27 mile drive

From Bristol, you can drive north to the Cotswolds. The Cotswolds is a vast area of England that is famous for storybook villages that look like they have been frozen in time and rolling countryside.

The Cotswolds encompasses parts of Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, and Somerset, so you definitely won’t see it all on one trip! However, there are a few beautiful towns and villages that you can visit from Bristol.

  • Tetbury is one of the best places to visit in the Cotswolds (and it’s got the royal seal of approval – Prince Charles lives here!). It has a quaint high street with beautiful historic buildings.
  • Bourton-in-the-Water is famous for being ‘the Venice of the Cotswolds’ because of its labyrinth of canals
  • Stow-on-the-Wold is one of the most scenic villages, with allegedly the oldest pub in the UK
  • Lacock is a Harry Potter filming location

Where to stay

Either drive back to Bristol or stay in Calcot Manor, a popular spa hotel close to Tetbury. It’s also kid-friendly!

Tetbury to Bath – 45 minutes/ 25 mile drive

south west travel bristol

Bath is one of the most popular places in South West England, and it wholeheartedly deserves its reputation. With a maze of streets lined by Georgian buildings, an abbey where the first king of all of England was crowned and famous Roman Baths (and a more modern spa!), there’s loads to enjoy in this city.

south west travel bristol

Bath is only a 40-minute drive from Bristol, so you could go back to Bristol tonight. Alternatively, if you prefer to stay in Bath, the Gainsborough Bath Spa Hotel is a luxurious accommodation option, with the only hotel spa in the UK with naturally heated thermal waters. Find the best deals and reserve your hotel rooms on Ebooking .

Bath to Cheddar – 55 minutes/ 25 mile drive

south west travel bristol

Cheddar is a beautiful Somerset town, home to the famous Cheddar Gorge. This impressive phenomenon is the largest gorge in England, and you can marvel at it either by walking around the gorge’s rim or driving through! There are a range of other attractions in Cheddar, including:

  • Trying some cheddar cheese – this is the most popular cheese in the UK and cheddar is where it comes from!
  • Explore Cheddar caves, ancient prehistoric caves where Cheddar man – the skeleton of an ancient human – was once found.
  • Visit museums about the caves and prehistory in the area
  • Enjoy the many shops and restaurants of Cheddar town
  • Drink some local Somerset cider

The Bath Arms Hotel is a gastropub with comfortable rooms upstairs, and it is located right in the heart of Cheddar.

Cheddar to Dartmoor – 1 hour 30 minute/ 85 mile drive

Dartmoor is another beautiful natural phenomenon and the largest national park in England . It is a huge moorland dotted with tors, which are hills with rocks on the top. The area is also rich with prehistory, with lots of ancient ruins and stone circles to enjoy.

Here are some of the best things to do in Dartmoor:

  • Visit the pretty towns of Moretonhampstead, Chagford, and Lustleigh
  • Hike to Wistman’s Wood, a temperate rainforest
  • Cross the medieval Postbridge Clapper Bridge
  • Learn about one of the country’s most notorious prisons at the Dartmoor prison museum
  • Visit the lovely market town of Tavistock
  • Learn about history at Buckland Abbey
  • Catch an amazing view at Brentor Church
  • Hike around Lydford Gorge

Larkworthy Farm is a little north of Dartmoor, but it has wonderful glamping pods which are cozy in the winter and airy in the summer.

Alternatively, the Highwayman Inn is a quirky pub near the north of Dartmoor with rooms.

Lizard Peninsula and Falmouth

Dartmoor to Lizard Point – 2 hour/ 87 mile drive

From Dartmoor, drive into Cornwall, toward the Lizard Peninsula. This is home to Lizard Point, which is the furthest south point of the UK. There are also numerous other beaches to enjoy, including the immensely popular (and stunning) Kynance Cove, Coverack, and Poldhu Cove. It’s also worth visiting the traditional fishing village of Cadgwith Cove and Roskilly’s Ice Cream Farm.

south west travel bristol

Once you’ve explored the Lizard to your heart’s content, drive northward to Falmouth. Falmouth is a trendy town with plenty of attractions, including the National Maritime Museum Cornwall and Pendennis Castle, a coastal fortress that was built by Henry VIII.

south west travel bristol

One of the best things to do in Falmouth is enjoying its exemplary food scene. It has restaurants from all corners of the globe, including East Asian and South African cuisine. I highly recommend Kim Asia which serves up delicious bowls of ramen and other East and Southeast Asian dishes, with plenty of veggie options. Or, if you’re craving fish and chips, head to Harbour Lights, which is the best chippy in town. They even do a vegetarian version!

The Greenbank Hotel is famous for its views of Falmouth Harbour and is one of the best hotels in the area.

Lizard Point to Land’s End – 1 hour 5 minute/34 mile drive

south west travel bristol

After Falmouth, it’s a fairly short drive to Land’s End – the furthest south-westerly point in the country. On the way, you could pop into Mousehole, an adorable fishing village with one of the most beautiful harbors in the country, and Porthcurno, which is famous for its telegraph museum and the Minack Theatre, a huge amphitheater that overlooks the sea.

south west travel bristol

Land’s End is also close to some of the best beaches in the UK. Porthcurno Beach is near the town, and if you’re up for a hike you can walk from here to Pedn Vounder or Nanjizal Beach, both of which look like they should be in tropical lands. Sennen Cove is also very popular and is just half a mile from Land’s End.

There are loads of things to do at Land’s End itself, including various family-friendly attractions and epic scenery. Don’t miss sending a postcard from the first and last postbox in the UK and shopping at the first shop in the UK!

If you have time, you could end your day at St Ives. This is a charming and popular town that is famous for its art connections. If you’ve got time, visit the TATE St Ives and Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Garden to learn more about this. Alternatively, take a boat to Seal Island and see the colony of seals who live here! Or you could just grab a Cornish pasty and enjoy the harbor – just beware of the seagulls!

Land’s End Hotel is the first and last hotel in the UK – so it’s a memorable place to stay! If you are finishing the day in St Ives, Pedn Olva Hotel has epic views over St Ives harbor and lovely rooms.

Port Isaac, Tintagel and Boscastle

Land’s End to Port Isaac – 1 hour 50 minute/ 65 mile drive

south west travel bristol

Back in east Cornwall, it’s worth driving along the north coast to see some points of interest. Port Isaac is where Doc Martin was filmed and is a staggeringly beautiful fishing village. It’s well worth a walk around, even if you haven’t seen Doc Martin.

south west travel bristol

Tintagel is home to the legendary Tintagel Castle. This is allegedly where King Arthur was born and was the seat of ancient Cornish kings, and then a medieval dwelling that was owned by Richard Early of Cornwall. The castle is in ruins now, but it is a fascinating place to visit with epic views.

In Tintagel, you can also enjoy King Arthur’s Great Hall, the Medieval Hall House, and the Tintagel Toy Museum.

Then, drive along the coast a bit more to reach Boscastle. This is a beautiful town owned by the National Trust, with an epic natural harbor. You can walk from the village to the harbor, which is fairly easy and takes in some wonderful views. If you want a bit more of a challenge, it’s worth hiking on the nearby cliffs too.

If you’d like a bit more beach time, you can drive a little further down the coast to Bude. This is a fun surf town with two beautiful beaches – Summerleaze and Crooklets. There is also a range of beaches just a short distance from the town.

south west travel bristol

The Beach is a cozy hotel with epic views across Bude’s beachfront.

Bude to Exeter – 1 hour 15 minute/ 55 mile drive

Exeter is a historic city in South East Devon. Although it’s not as large as the likes of London, Birmingham, and Manchester, it has a fascinating past that spans back to Roman times. It prospered during the medieval and early modern periods thanks to the woolen cloth trade. Although it was heavily bombed in World War Two, it still retains many of its historic buildings, including one of the most majestic Cathedrals in the country.

Some of the best things to do in Exeter include:

  • See the outside and inside of the grand Cathedral
  • Do a free Red Coat Walking Tour to learn more about the city
  • Explore the Exeter Tunnels, the Medieval water tunnels, on a guided tour
  • Visit the RAMM, which is Exeter’s museum (and one of the biggest in Devon!)
  • Go paddleboarding around the Quay

Headweir Mill House Hotel is a 200-year-old mill house that is set along the River Exe, close to central Exeter.

The Jurassic Coast

Exeter to Exmouth – 30 minute/ 10 mile drive

The Jurassic Coast runs from Exmouth in Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset and is a fantastic way to finish your South West England road trip itinerary.

You can easily drive to Exmouth (where there is plenty of parking by the beach) from Exeter and visit Orcombe Point, which marks the start of this famous coastline. Look out over the epic red cliffs, which are the oldest part of the Jurassic Coast.

south west travel bristol

Then, drive eastwards, stopping in the beautiful coastal villages of Beer and Branscombe, the popular seaside resorts Weymouth and Lyme Regis, and the famous rock formations of Durdle Door and Old Harry’s Rocks.

south west travel bristol

When you finish in Studland Bay, you can either drive back to Exmouth or Exeter or drive a little further to stay the night in the town of Bournemouth.

If you are staying in Bournemouth, the popular Cumberland Hotel is located right by the beach and has an outdoor pool.

How to get back to Bristol or London

It is a two-hour 20-minute drive from Bournemouth back to Bristol if you want to drive there to return your hire car. If you have rented a car out from a London outlet, it is also around a 2 hour 20-minute drive to reach the capital.

There are also train and coach services from Bournemouth to London.

South West England is an incredible part of the country, and you’ll have seen the very best of it on this road trip!

20 best beaches in Devon (2024 local’s guide)

My family’s connection to South West England dates back to 14th-century Cornwall, rooted in mining and Cornish pasties.

My dad was born in Redruth and he and my grandparents moved around Cornwall and Devon due to my granddad’s police role, finally settling in Exmouth, East Devon.

My childhood involved many trips around Devon and Cornwall, walking on Dartmoor, hitting the beaches in Penwith and seeing history come alive at the Jurassic Coast.

I later attended the University of the West of England in Bristol and then lived in Bath, before returning to Exmouth in 2020. Now, I explore and write about the region through my blog, Go South West England and run my Exmouth-based tour company, Exmouth Tours.

Southwest Airlines quietly rolls out a new compensation program for flight delays

Southwest Airlines said it launched a compensation program for  flight delays as part of a $140 million U.S. Department of Transportation settlement over the carrier's meltdown in December 2022 during a busy holiday travel period.

Southwest agreed in December 2023 to provide $90 million in travel vouchers of $75 or more over three years to passengers delayed at least three hours getting to their final destinations because of an airline-caused issue or cancellation and to start the program by April 30.

The airline said Monday it had quietly launched the program on April 16 and has already heard from a few thousand customers seeking vouchers.

The airline agreed to the compensation program after the holiday meltdown that resulted in 16,900 flight cancellations and stranded 2 million passengers. The settlement included a $35 million cash fine.

Will Southwest start assigning seats? CEO says the airline is weighing changes

A massive winter storm in December 2022 and subsequent chaos prompted travel horror stories such as people missing funerals or long-awaited holiday gatherings, passengers with canceled flights forced to make cross-country drives of 17 or more hours and some cancer patients being unable to get treatment.

The delay compensation program is part of the Biden administration's aggressive efforts to get tough on airlines as it aims to require new passenger compensation. Vouchers will be awarded "upon request," Southwest said.

Southwest CEO Bob Jordan said in December that, given its operational performance, the $30 million in vouchers annually was "the right number" to commit to.

Asked if Southwest would end the program after three years, Jordan said consumer programs "rarely change or go away."

Rival U.S. airlines have not put in place similar programs and do not yet face a mandate to do so.

Enough with airline hidden fees: DOT rules take aim at 'corporate rip-offs'

President Joe Biden said last May that the DOT would propose new rules requiring airlines to compensate passengers with cash for significant controllable flight delays or cancellations by the end of the year. The DOT has not issued its proposal, and Congress has declined to mandate compensation for delays in a pending aviation reform bill.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said last week Southwest under the delay compensation requirement will "really lead the market and it will be very interesting to see how other airlines respond – not as punishment but by way of competition."

The DOT in 2022 asked carriers if they would pay at least $100  for delays of at least three hours  caused by airlines and none agreed.

Most carriers – including Southwest – voluntarily committed in August 2022 to provide hotels, meals and ground transportation for airline-caused delays or cancellations but resisted providing cash compensation as is required in the European Union .

Southwest Was Ranked the Worst U.S. Airline of 2024, According to a New Report — Here Are the Airlines That Took the Top Spots

As issues continue to plague the aviation industry, choosing a domestic airline is becoming more of a challenge than ever.

And WalletHub 's recent ranking of the top U.S. Airlines for 2024 reflects these struggles. The outlet ranked the nine major U.S. airlines and regional carrier Skywest Airlines, with only one coming out on top.

"Airline ticket prices had a pretty significant drop last year, but have started to rise again this year. Cost isn't all that matters when picking what company to fly with, though," the report said. "Comfort and safety also matter, especially with recent incidents in the news about plane malfunctions. Finding the most affordable airfare is now quite easy for anyone with an internet connection, so this report examines other, overlooked aspects of air travel to help consumers make more-informed decisions."

Coming in at No. 1 was Alaska Airlines with a score of 68.07 out of 100, taking the crown from Delta Airlines, which won the title in both 2022 and 2023.

Delta did however tie with JetBlue Airlines as the most comfortable airline, thanks to stellar in-flight amenities like free Wi-Fi and extra legroom.

The outlet looked at 13 different qualifying factors in three major categories to make its report — baggage and departures, in-flight comfort and cost, and safety. Airlines were graded on a scale of 100 and received a certain number of points based on the category being measured, such as canceled flights, mishandled baggage reports, legroom, Wi-Fi availability, and more.

Southwest Airlines is considering changes to its quirky boarding and seating practices

DALLAS (AP) — Southwest Airlines is studying changes to its quirky boarding and seating policies as it searches for ways to raise more revenue .

Airline officials say they are studying possible changes but won’t have anything to announce until September. That tease is leading to speculation about whether Southwest might ditch some longstanding traditions, including the practice of passengers picking their own seats only after they board a plane.

CEO Robert Jordan says he is proud of Southwest’s “product,” but it was developed when flights weren’t as full as they are today, and customers’ preferences change over time, prompting the “deep dive” into “transformational options” in boarding and seating.

“Early indications, both for our customers and for Southwest, look pretty darn interesting,” he told analysts and reporters Thursday.

Every other major U.S. airline sells first- or business-class seats with more room and amenities. They assign seats long before passengers arrive at the airport. And increasingly, they charge extra if economy-class passengers want to pick a particular seat, such as one in an exit row or near the front of the cabin.

Those policies generate significant “ancillary revenue.” Delta Air Lines took in $4.4 billion in “premium products” during the first quarter.

FILE - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan speaks during a joint statement to the media in Baghdad, April 22, 2024. Turkey on Thursday, May 2, suspended all imports and exports to Israel citing the country's ongoing military action in Gaza and vowed to continue to impose other measures until the Israeli government allows the flow of humanitarian to the region. Southwest doesn’t have a first-class cabin or assigned seats. Passengers line up in the gate area in an order determined partly by who checked in first and – increasingly – who paid extra to move up in line . The lucky or high-paying ones get in the “A” boarding group, followed by the middling “B” crowd and finally the dreaded “C” group, whose unfortunate inhabitants usually wind up in a middle seat, maybe in the back of the plane.

Over the years, Southwest customers learned to check in online exactly 24 hours before departure to get the best shot at grabbing the seat they wanted. In 2009, the airline began charging an extra fee — called EarlyBird — to move up in the boarding line. The fee starts at $15 per flight but goes up when planes are full.

Jordan said any changes must generate significant new revenue and can’t slow down flights . Beyond that, he was deliberately and repeatedly vague, but executives did indicate that two possible changes have been ruled out already.

Ryan Green, Southwest’s chief commercial officer, said the airline won’t impose baggage charges — it’s the only U.S. carrier that lets passenger check one or two bags for free. He said Southwest also won’t install curtains like those that separate premium cabins from the economy-class section on other airlines.

Savanthi Syth, an airlines analyst with Raymond James Financial, said the lack of assigned seating is “a huge pain point for passengers,” although a shrinking contingent still likes it. Syth thinks passengers would prefer the ability to select a seat in advance to trying to get a better spot in the boarding line.

“More importantly, I think it opens you up to a greater pool of passengers that would not consider (Southwest) because of the stress of the current process,” she said. “This is particularly important now that Southwest has lost the differentiation of no change or cancellations fees.” Southwest’s closest rivals dropped change fees too during the pandemic.

Syth is less convinced that Southwest needs a first-class cabin, but she thinks adding extra-legroom seats could be attractive. “There are plenty of tall people who could use the extra space,” she said.

Southwest executives are frequently asked about changes in their policies around baggage, seating and first-class cabins. At an industry conference in November, Jordan said there was nothing in the works.

What changed?

Southwest’s financial results have become more dismal. The company reported Thursday that it lost $231 million in the first quarter, which was worse than analysts expected and a wider loss than a year ago.

The Dallas-based airline faces sharply rising labor costs — up 19% or $462 million from a year ago, and that was before flight attendants ratified a new contract with sharply higher wages. Spending on maintenance and airport fees are rising by double-digit percentages. And Southwest can’t add as many flights as it would like because a production crisis at Boeing means there are fewer new planes.

The company is freezing hiring other than critical positions, and it will take the rare step of pulling out of four airports in August to cut costs. Even with revenue rising on strong travel demand , the airline needs more to offset inflation.

The airline promises that whatever it decides, it won’t change Southwest’s unique character. That could be a tricky balancing act in the view of its many loyal customers. They must wait out the next several months.

“We are committed to a set of new strategic initiatives. I have hinted at boarding and seating and the cabin, and we’re going to share those with you at investor day” in September, Jordan told analysts.

Train strikes in May 2024: Full list of dates and lines affected

Rail lines are set for disruption in the week following the first May bank holiday as train drivers at 16 rail companies strike on different days.

Wednesday 1 May 2024 09:08, UK

south west travel bristol

Train drivers will stage a fresh wave of strikes and overtime bans in May, causing disruption to the rail network.

The strikes are part of a long-running dispute over pay.

Members of Aslef union at 16 rail companies will walk out on different days from 7 to 9 May.

Additionally, all members will refuse to work any overtime from 6 May to 11 May.

Here is a full list of the services affected by strikes and when.

Rail strike dates

Tuesday 7 May

Strikes will affect c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and South Western Railway.

Wednesday 8 May

Strikes will affect Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.

Thursday 9 May

Strikes will affect LNER, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express.

Overtime ban dates

From Monday 6 May to Saturday 11 May union members will not work overtime.

Overtime bans, an action short of a strike, means some services may not be running or may be reduced as drivers refuse to work their rest days.

People are advised to check before they travel, as some areas may have no service.

How do strikes and overtime bans affect services?

Strikes tend to mean services on lines where members are participating are extremely affected or cancelled entirely, whereas overtime bans often lead to reduced services.

An underground train pulls into Leicester Square station in central London February 11, 2014. A planned 48-hour strike this week by staff on London's underground rail network which threatened to bring travel misery for millions has been suspended to allow further talks, unions said on Tuesday. Are there strikes on the Tube too?

There have been regular strikes on London Underground too recently, and while there aren't any planned walkouts for drivers, customer service managers will refuse to work overtime on the following days:

Monday 29 April

Tuesday 30 April

Wednesday 1 May

Tuesday 2 May

Wednesday 3 May

Thursday 4 May

Friday 5 May

The Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) says the action by its members is likely to cause Tube stations to close at the last minute, including on the Saturday following the strike (27 April), while TfL has said on its website "some stations may need to close at short notice".

Despite the warning, a TfL spokesperson has said they aren't expecting significant disruption.

This action follows strike action taken by the same workers on 10 April, which the TSSA said had a "real impact" with "many stations shut at short notice".

They say they are "extremely concerned" about TfL's 'Stations Changes' proposals.

"We have made it clear that our union will not accept the continued threats to our members' roles, locations, terms, and conditions to stand unchallenged," a TSSA spokesperson said.

"We will continue to take sustained action until London Underground is prepared to negotiate with us in good faith."

Commenting on the impending strikes, a TfL spokesperson said: "We are disappointed that TSSA is continuing with this strike action following a consultation process.

"While we don't expect this action will cause significant disruption, we urge TSSA to continue to work with us to help find a resolution.

"There are no planned job losses as part of these vital changes which will improve the service we provide to customers at our stations."

Why are the strikes still happening?

Aslef rejected a two-year offer of 4% in 2022 and another 4% this year, saying it is way below inflation, and is linked to changes in terms and conditions.

Aslef said train drivers have not had an increase in salary for five years, since their last pay deals expired in 2019.

The union said after its members voted overwhelmingly in February to continue taking industrial action, it asked the train operating companies to hold talks.

General secretary Mick Whelan said the year-old pay offer of 4% and another 4% was "dead in the water".

Southwest passengers now get a $75 voucher for big flight disruptions

Customers who are delayed for more than three hours can fill out a form online to request the voucher.

Southwest Airlines has launched a new compensation fund for inconvenienced fliers, offering $75 vouchers to passengers whose flights are significantly delayed or canceled for a reason within the airline’s control.

The compensation fund is part of the airline’s $140 million settlement with the Transportation Department, following Southwest’s operational meltdown in December 2022. A mix of winter weather, holiday travel and failing Southwest scheduling systems resulted in nearly 17,000 canceled or significantly delayed flights, affecting some 2 million passengers. Southwest agreed to pay the government $35 million and create a $90 million voucher fund for future fliers affected by operational errors, on top of the some $600 million it paid out in refunds and reimbursements to customers affected by the holiday debacle.

While the original agreement terms slated the voucher program to start Tuesday, Southwest rolled out the fund April 16. Any passenger who arrives at their final destination three or more hours after the scheduled arrival time for domestic flights or six hours for international flights can request a $75 voucher. The money is available only for fliers facing issues within Southwest’s control, such as a mechanical problem or swapping planes.

To receive the money, customers can fill out a form online . The request must be submitted within one year from the delayed or canceled flight. Southwest should get back to customers within 30 days, according to Southwest spokeswoman Laura Swift. The compensation fund is expected to run for three years.

Last week, the Biden administration announced new rules for airlines to strengthen passenger protection and increase transparency in the industry. Under the new regulations, airlines are required to streamline the refund process for canceled flights and abandon hidden fees by disclosing the price of surcharges for luggage and changes to reservations upfront.

While announcing those rules, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg also mentioned Southwest’s vouchers as a customer service measure that could influence other airlines.

“This is the month when those vouchers as part of the Southwest settlement kick in, and Southwest will now, because we are making them, really lead the market on that,” Buttigieg said. “It’ll be very interesting to see what other airlines respond — not as punishment, but by way of competition.”

In a statement Tuesday, DOT officials said they will be “closely monitoring” Southwest’s program, requiring the airline to submit an annual report documenting the voucher expenditures over the next three years.

Hannah Sampson contributed to this report.
