St. Croix – U.S. Virgin Islands

Last updated on January 21st, 2024 at 09:00 pm

Welcome to St. Croix, the largest of the US Virgin Islands. Immerse yourself in the rich history of Christiansted and Frederiksted, explore the stunning Buck Island Reef National Monument, or indulge in snorkeling and diving adventures. Savor local delicacies, experience the lively Crucian culture, and let the captivating beauty of St. Croix leave you in awe.

Where You Dock in St. Croix – U.S. Virgin Islands

All cruise ships dock in Fredericksted. With only one cruise ship allowed to dock at a time, the small town keeps cruising an intimate affair. The single dock will have you enter the smaller of the island’s two largest towns.

At the end of the pier you will be welcomed by vendors displaying souvenirs, jewelry, and t-shirts. Within the town of Fredericksted you will find several historic buildings, including the fort, and several shops. The newly renovated port welcomes you with gardens and wonderful beaches.

The two major towns on St. Croix are Fredericksted where ships dock, and Christiansted, which is the primary tourist attraction you will find colorful 19th century architecture along cobbled paths, unique shopping, and two ports. Point Udall is the eastern most point of the 26-mile-long island, as well as the United Stated and is worth the trip.

Getting Around St. Croix – U.S. Virgin Islands

Buses : Vitran is the public bus system and runs from Fredericksted to Christiansted and back about every 2 hours making sure to stop near all major shopping and some tourism areas along the way. It is $1.00 per trip, or $0.55 for senior citizens. However, the bus system timing is not very reliable if you are on a tight schedule.

Taxi Service: You will find taxis throughout Fredericksted, Christiansted, the airport, and most dock and tourism areas. Taxi rates are predetermined destination rates, however it is a good idea to discuss the rate with your driver prior to getting in the taxi. In addition to registered taxis that can be identified with their permit, “gypsy” taxis exist which determine their own fares and are not guaranteed by the island. Fares may be more negotiable with gypsy services, although you are at your own risk when it comes to dealing with these drivers.

Car Rental: If you are planning on spending several days on the island, or even a full day of sightseeing it is recommended you rent a car. Car rentals are available in both major towns and at the airport.

Shopping In St. Croix – U.S. Virgin Islands

Both towns offer good shopping options, however, Christiansted is the primary shopping area for tourists. The town offers a wide variety of unique shops, of Crucian jewelry, souvenirs, luxury and typical island shopping.

Most mainstream big box stores and fast food restaurants are found within the inner part of the city, allowing for independent stores to occupy the main towns. The shopping experience on the island is highlighted by the 18th and 19th century buildings and stone streets you walk along. Nearly every part of each town is like walking through a museum.

Dining In St. Croix – U.S. Virgin Islands

While there is a degree of diversity on the island your food options are limited to typical island meals with accents of spices, seafood, chicken and pork. You can also find pizza places, and typical American restaurants with burgers and salads.

There is a wide variety of venue types from food trucks which offer some great tasting foods, to casual and fine dining. Most restaurants on the island are unique and independently owned local restaurants, with very few mainstream restaurants. Many of the nicer resorts such as Carambola and Buccaneer offer fine dining choices with beautiful views of the Caribbean and beaches.

 Rum Runners Steak and Seafood: Listed as one of the perennial favorites on the island. This waterfront restaurant offers Caribbean and Continental cuisine.

 The Bombay Club: A local favorite for years. The Bombay Club serves a great assortment of local, continental, and Mediterranean cuisines.

 Bon Bagay Sailing: Cuisine developed by the islands best chefs who cook on a rotating schedule while diners enjoy the views and sunsets of the island from off-shore.

 Buccaneer Restaurants: The Buccaneer hotel offers several restaurants from casual to fine dining, as well as a beach bar. Enjoy the sand, sun, and great dining.

Things To Do in St. Croix – U.S. Virgin Islands

The draw to St. Croix is in the island’s beauty and outdoor activities, as well as its historical value to the Caribbean. On the western side of the island is the rainforest and mountainous region where you can enjoy horseback riding, trail walking, or enjoy the beaches and surfing.

Mixed within this side of the island are unique attractions such as the beer-drinking pigs and Crucian Rum Distillery. As you make your way toward the central and far side of the island the land becomes rolling and arid, nearly desert-like, finally ending at Point Udall, which has a magnificent view of the sea.

Common activities for tourists:

 Cruzan Rum Distillery: Tour the factory, and learn about the 350 year old history of Cruzan rum and its impact on the world. Of course, you get a little taste of many of the rum flavors available.

 Estate Little Princess: Used as a sugar plantation in the 1730’s, Estate Little Princess is now a nature conservancy. Stroll through historic buildings and nature trails, some of which lead to a secluded beach where you can enjoy the view while enjoying a picnic lunch.

 Whim Plantation: One of 300 plantations that use to dot the island, many of Whim’s original buildings have been completely restored. Tours of the Great House are offered, representing some of the best representations of 18th-century Danish plantation life. Explore the grounds and buildings that are sprawled across the 12-acre museum.

 Estate Mount Washington: Lost until 1984 when the owner found the prior sugar plantation buried in the woods of his property, Estate Mount Washington had now been restored to its original charm. The plantation Great House is considered one of the best historical renovations on the island.

 Heritage Trail: Self-guided trail that encompasses the entire island, touching on nearly 200 historic sites.

 Point Udall: Easternmost point of the island and the United States. A new monument was built at the site in 2000 and the point has been host to several ceremonies, wedding proposals, and is a great place to relax and enjoy the wonder of the crashing waves along the island.

 Rainforest: The rain forest is a display of the island’s unique and diverse habitats. Enjoy walking or horseback riding along the trails.

 Fredericksted and Christiansted forts: Both towns’ forts stand as a representation of their past as each overlooks the Caribbean the same way they did when they stood to protect the island in past centuries. The forts provide tours and freedom to explore on your own.

 Historic Downtowns: Dating back to the 1600’s you can walk along streets that once fed much of the Caribbean, America, and Europe with its rum. The towns were once bustling with the sugar cane industry and were well known to merchants, sailors, farmers, and pirates. Many of the original buildings still exist and are in use today.

 SCUBA, Snorkeling and Buck Island: St. Croix can boast some of the world’s greatest underwater coral reefs and views. SCUBA and snorkeling are popular attractions, as are exploring sunken ships in the harbors and further out. Buck Island and its reef are a U.S. National Park and the west end beach was named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic.

 Reef Golf Course: 9-hole golf course and driving range. Reef Golf Course is nestled in Teague Bay and also offers tennis, a stunning beach, and one of the island’s finest beachside restaurants.

 Carambola Golf Club: A world-class golf course nestled in the lush hills of St. Croix. This par-72 course has been awarded a gold medal by GOLF Magazine and given a 4-star rating by Golf Digest.

 Buccaneer Golf Club: Par-70 rolling course designed by PGA Pro Bob Joyce offers one of the most scenic courses in the Caribbean. 13, of the 18 holes are popular destinations for golfers and photographers alike.

St. Croix has dozens of powdery sand beaches lining its shores and all of them are available to the public. While most are free, be mindful of some beaches which do have fees for resorts, or restrictions due to sea turtle nesting. While there are too many to list, here are a few favorites:

 Jack and Isaac’s Beach: Remote and picturesque, these two beaches are hidden gems on St. Croix. Known for years to only locals, tour guides have now begun to bring tourists to enjoy one of the pettiest views on the island.

 Buck Island’s Turtle Beach: Buck Island is a small island off the coast of St. Croix. Turtle Beach has been acknowledged as one of the best beaches in the world, and also a haven for sea turtles.

 Cane Bay: A great family beach, with plenty of activities. It rests on a small inlet that allows for calm and warm waters to relax and enjoy.

 Rainbow Beach: Stunning turquoise water and white powdery sand. It’s an A-list beach on a great part of the island known for its beaches.

 Tamarind Reef, The Buccaneer, Carambola, and Beach on the Cay: These are all the quintessential beaches you’ve come to know from the movies. Umbrellas, lounge chairs, and beach bars only highlight the well-stocked beach toys such as snorkeling gear, and windsurfing outfits.

Arriving By Cruise Ship to St. Croix

Our Port The Ann E. Abramson Pier is named in honor of the Virgin Islands Public Works Commissioner who was responsible for much of the rejuvenation of the Frederiksted area. This is the pier where most of the large cruise ships dock, as well as military ships, submarines, and other naval vessels. From time to time, tall-ships especially from Denmark, can be seen here. The dock itself has been a favorite diving place especially for viewing bright coral, sponges, and a multitude of fish life. A night dive should reveal the sea-horses unique to this pier. Visitors arriving at the pier often walk through the small town of Frederiksted and walk to the nearby beaches and beach clubs. All large cruise ships berth at the island’s only major pier, officially named after a former Public Works Commissioner, Ann E. Abramson. The pier is 1,526 feet long, allowing two cruise ships to tie up at the same time. A kiosk filled with tourism information sits at its head. Public restrooms are nearby. While the pier is the gateway to shopping in Frederiksted, taxis and tour buses take visitors to Christiansted for shopping, sightseeing, and on round-the-island tours. There is no admission charge.

Did you know... St. Croix is ringed by beaches of all shapes and sizes, some are long white sand stretches, others are small patches shaded by low sea grape trees and towering coconut palms. Some have smooth sandy bottoms ideal for swimming, and others have rock and coral-lined entries perfect for snorkeling! Did you know... St. Croix is the only Caribbean Island where a diver can: ●Dive a wall that drops over 13,000 feet ●Dive a reef that is the largest living reef of any Caribbean Island ●Dive five wrecks that are within 100 yards of each other ●Dive a pier

  • Weddings / Romance

DID YOU KNOW THAT... Many couples are opting to save the money (not to mention the stress and hard work) of a big wedding at home by escaping to a Caribbean island for a combination wedding/honeymoon. Upon their return, they can share the event by showing the video and photographs at an informal reception. All the islands are beautiful and, on some, weddings have become a major promotional tool. So why should you choose St. Croix above others?

  • Moving Here

DID YOU KNOW... In addition to it's long and rich multicultural history, friendly people, open spaces, the blue sea and near perfect year-round weather, there are a number of reasons to consider relocating to St Croix. Most importantly, the U.S. Virgin Islands, which includes St Croix, operate under U.S. law which is important in both business and personal matters.

This means mainland US companies do business here including retail stores such as K-Mart, Radio Shack, Office Max, McDonald's and Wendy's. Also U.S. financial services including a variety of U.S. mortgage, insurance and banking companies offer local service.  U.S. cellular phone companies including AT&T and Sprint, both operate here.

It also has some of the best snorkeling and diving spots in the eastern Caribbean. With so much to see and do, planning a cruise day in St. Croix can be challenging.

In this traveler’s guide to St. Croix, I’ve reviewed the top attractions if you’re arriving on a cruise. The island has plenty to see and do if you only have a day in port. From disembarking the ship at Frederiksted and exploring historical landmarks to relaxing on a stunning beach, snorkeling in the ocean, and hiking lush mountain trails, this article has you covered.

Are you ready to discover the secrets of St. Croix (USVI) and make the most of your cruise day in port? If so, please continue reading to learn how to plan an unforgettable cruise day in Saint Croix.

Where is St. Croix?

St. Croix is the largest US Virgin Island and a popular destination for Eastern Caribbean cruises . It is situated within the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles. Because the island has only two cities, St. Croix is called “Twin City.” St. Thomas and St. John are other popular cruise destinations in the Virgin Islands.

The capital of St. Croix is Christiansted, on the island’s north coast. However, its other town on the western side—Frederiksted—is more commercially important. It has two deep-water ports for cruise ships and is also known as “Freedom City.”

St. Croix is unique for being the location of Point Udall, the easternmost point of the United States. Point Udall offers breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, making it a must-visit spot for any traveler to St. Croix.

Discovering St. Croix

Christiansted broadwalk

St. Croix is steeped in history, and its towns have a rich cultural heritage with Danish, African, Caribbean, and American influences. The towns have historic streets with attractive, colorful colonial buildings and vibrant local life. The main attractions of St. Croix are its stunning beaches, coral reefs, superb diving opportunities, and snorkeling spots.

Spending a day in St. Croix gives you plenty of time to enjoy its diverse cultural influences. For example, you can sample Crucian cuisine and enjoy architecture during tasting tours in Frederiksted and Christiansted. You can also hike in lush rainforests, visit historic plantations, or visit Buck Island National Park to marvel at rich tropical marine life and stunning corals.

Where do Cruise Ships Dock in St. Croix?

St. Croix cruise port

Cruise ships dock at the deep-water Ann E. Abramson Pier in Frederiksted. Located on St. Croix’s west coast, the terminal can accommodate two large cruise ships at a time. Once disembarking from the ship, you are within walking distance of downtown Frederiksted and a beautiful beach.

Facilities at Frederiksted Pier When Arriving in St. Croix

cruise port St. Croix

Facilities within the cruise terminal area are limited, aside from public restrooms and a tourist information kiosk. However, the pier is a gateway to shopping in Frederiksted, and there is a public beach beside the pier terminal. You can find taxis and tour buses to explore the island at the terminal exit.

Depending on where you disembark from the cruise ship, you can use the electric trolley to travel from the ship along the 1,526-foot-long (305 m) pier to the terminal exit gates.

Getting Around St. Croix, USVI

public transportation St. Croix, USVI

Taxis and rental cars are the most practical way to get around and explore this tropical Caribbean paradise. If you want to stay close to the port in Frederiksted, walking or riding a bicycle is an easy way to tour the old town or head to beaches near the cruise terminal.

Taxis are accessible at the cruise port and convenient for quickly reaching popular attractions. They offer fixed rates for different zones, and listed prices are usually for two people sharing. For example, the taxi fare to Christiansted is around $36 plus $17 for each additional passenger. Always agree on the fare before beginning your trip.

Safari taxis

Safari taxis are open-air trucks with bench seating and usually charge a flat rate. They follow set routes and are economical if you are exploring the island with a large group. Pre-booking safari taxi tours to your destination on your cruise day is best.

Renting a car is one of the best and most flexible ways to explore St. Croix at your own pace. Several car rental agencies are located at the cruise terminal’s exit. The road infrastructure is excellent in St. Croix and above standard compared to other Caribbean islands.

Remember to drive on the left side of the road. Reserve a car in advance to ensure availability.

The Virgin Islands Transit (VITRAN) operates public buses across St. Croix. However, they are not recommended when spending a cruise day on the island. Although inexpensive, the buses run infrequently and don’t always adhere strictly to schedules.

Fort Frederik, completed in 1760, is a significant historic site in St. Croix. It played a vital role in the island’s Danish colonial period. The cannons helped deter pirates from landing at the deep-water bay. It is also the site of the Emancipation Revolt of 1848. Touring the fort gives a glimpse into St. Croix’s colorful past.

Frederiksted Clock Tower

Frederiksted Clock Tower

While visiting Fort Frederik, you’ll see the imposing Eliza James-McBean Clock Tower. It’s important to note that the clock doesn’t show accurate time. It seems that all four clocks on each side show contrasting times, none of which are correct. There are lots of stalls and vendors nearby.

Shuttles are around $ 16. Sightseeing:

St.Croix's rich culture and history, along with its beautiful beaches and world-class recreational activities, create an experience unlike any other in the Caribbean. Since the day Christopher Columbus first arrived at Salt River on St. Croix more than 500 years ago, sugar and rum have shaped the island's life and land. Fifty-four sugar mills, each with imposing windmill towers and factory chimneys, still rest in the shadows of stately eighteenth-century and nineteenth- century homes.

Located on the west end of the island, Estate Whim Plantation is just one example of these "great houses." With acres of rolling green hills, St.Croix's plantation estates also bore crops of okra, cabbage, corn, and other vegetables still prominent in Caribbean cuisine. As the sugar industry declined after the 1960s, tourism became the most important industry on the island.

Christiansted and Frederiksted, the two main towns of St. Croix, flourished as commercial ports during the eighteenth century and nineteenth century. Distinct architecture reflects the seven flags--Spanish, Dutch, British, French, Knights of Malta, Danish, and American -- that have flown over the island. Today, visitors to St. Croix can enjoy a number of indoor and outdoor activities, from fine dining, shopping, and a casino, to golf, scuba diving, and horseback riding.

The Cruzan Rum Distillery , in operation for over 300 years in the same location is home to one of the world's finest rums. The distillery (formerly known as Estate Diamond) offers guided tours of the facilities that explain the distillery process, the importance of rum in the island's history, and the story of the estate grounds.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

On the pier, you can buy tickets for the shuttle buses that run across the island to the quaint capital Christiansted. An intriguing combination of tropical charm and European heritage, Christiansted has a great setting and is home to a beautifully restored Danish fortress. A taxi to Christiansted will cost about $25 for two people.

Getting around any of the Virgin Islands is fairly easy. All of the islands have bus service and/or a regulated taxi service. You can "bargain" for most things on the islands, but the taxi and bus rates are regulated. Taxi rates are charged per person one way.

Many taxi drivers on the pier also offer tours. Cost about USD 25 for about 4 hours p.p. (with a full cab)

Also consider renting a car. Traffic is however "on the left"

It pays to compare your cruise line excursions : Tours etc. offered by GetYourGuide and by Viator .

Nearby Places:

Buck Island National Reef Monument, an 880-acre nature preserve, boasts an underwater snorkeling trail that has become one of the most popular attractions in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Visitors are ferried by boat to the island one mile northeast of St. Croix to view the stunning array of coral and sea life.

Shopping and Food

The best (duty-free) shopping is in Christiansted, where most stores are in the historic district. Stores are mostly closed on Sundays.

Communication:

English is the official language but you may also find Spanish being spoken. Free wifi at many places.

Opening Hours and Holidays:

Shopping hours Mon-Sat 0900-1700. When cruise ships are in port, some larger shops open on Sunday.

St. Croix is the largest of the three US Virgin Islands and as a US Territory, the official language is English, and the currency used is the US dollar. The locals on St. Croix are called Crucians, sometimes spelled ‘Cruzan’. Crucians are very friendly, but are reserved people. Behavior that is loud and boisterous is often times frowned upon. A smile and a greeting such as ‘good evening’ will surely help you fit in.

The US Virgin Islands are part of the Antilles chain which separates the Caribbean and Atlantic. St. Croix is 28 miles long and 7 miles wide. This intriguing jewel lies 17°45′ North latitude and 64°45′ West longitude and is considered to be one of the most beautiful resort areas in the Caribbean. We are on Atlantic Standard time, which makes us one hour ahead of Eastern Standard time in winter months when you set your clocks back one hour.

St. Croix U.S. Virgin Islands Port Guide

When you cruise to St. Croix, you’ll get a truly mellow island experience and a nice break from bigger, more crowded beach destinations. You would think everyone would know about St. Croix, the U.S. Virgin Island’s biggest island, but it remains a little under the radar. Tourists tend to flock to the more famous St. Thomas, but there’s plenty to see and do in St. Croix for all types of travelers on a Caribbean cruise .

Beaches are abundant across the island; Butler Bay, Dorsch Beach, and Frederiksted Beach are perfect for relaxed sunbathing and family fun. For a more active time on the beach, head to Coakley Bay Beach or Cane Bay Beach, where you’ll find abundant diving and snorkeling. Buck Island Reef National Monument and Sandy Point Wildlife Refuge aren’t far from the port at Frederiksted and make a great day trip for nature lovers. Foodies will enjoy the mix of Cajun and Caribbean cuisines and find delicious combinations in St. Croix. Tour a tasty rum distillery or take a day trip across the island to Point Udell, the easternmost point of the United States.

Please Note: While we don't currently sail to St. Croix, you can still discover the beauty of the U.S. Virgin Islands on one of our cruises to St. Thomas . Browse our cruises to St. Thomas below.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to st. croix, frederiksted.

On your cruise to St. Croix, it’s likely you’ll dock in Frederiksted, which is on the west side of the island. While in Frederiksted, check out the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, or the historic Fort Frederik, built in the 18th century to protect the area’s exports from pirates. Walk along Frederiksted Beach or explore the historic district to spot Danish-influenced architecture.

Christiansted

On the north shore of St. Croix is the town of Christiansted, where Danish-colonial sites and romantic waterfront restaurants are just a normal part of daily life. Christiansted is only a half hour drive or taxi ride from Frederiksted. Take a tour of Fort Christiansvaern, an 18th century historic landmark used to ward off pirate attacks on the town. Then, go shopping along Gallows Bay, a commercial district with plenty of small boutiques.

Sandy Point Wildlife Refuge

See endangered species up close at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge, just 15 or so minutes away from Frederiksted by car. The leatherback sea turtle is one of the species the refuge protects, as these turtles nest in the Virgin Islands year after year. Many visitors call this refuge a must-see while they were in St. Croix.

Buck Island Reef National Monument

The underwater trail at Buck Island Reef is practically famous among divers, who scuba the clear waters for stunning views of the coral reefs below. Visitors can also walk the nature trails and take in what it’s like to visit this uninhabited island. If you’re coming from Frederiksted, Buck Island is less than an hour’s drive, but access to the island is only available through boat or tour.

Rainbow Beach

On your cruise to St. Croix, enjoy one of the restaurants or bars along Rainbow Beach north of Frederiksted for a lively afternoon. Swimming and snorkeling are two big activities here, and families come to Rainbow Beach on Sundays for family fun and watersports. The small size of the beach makes it cozy, and yet it still attracts plenty of activity whether you’re paddleboarding on the water or ordering a drink from Rhythms, the go-to bar on the beach.

Learn More About St. Croix Shore Excursions

Top things to do in st. croix, tour the cruzan rum distillery.

A St. Croix cruise wouldn’t be complete without touring the Cruzan Rum Distillery just outside of Frederiksted. You’ll learn how rum is made and its history in St. Croix. For just $8, you’ll get a twenty minute tour that’ll take you through the facilities. Plenty of tastings included.

Visit the Easternmost Point in the US

From Frederiksted, Point Udall is an hour’s drive, but it’s well worth it. This historic site includes a monument called the Millennium Monument, which is a giant sundial. Point Udall is the easternmost point of the United States. Take photos here and hike to the top of Goat Hill for views of the ocean outstretched as far as the eye can see.

Watch the Sunset at Frederiksted Beach

Frederiksted Beach makes a perfect day-long excursion for those who want to stay closer to the cruise port. The beach features crystal waters and exactly the beach vibe you’d expect from the Virgin Islands. Enjoy drinks on the beach and rent an umbrella for a much-needed chance to do absolutely nothing.

Scuba Dive at Cane Bay Beach

Divers and water lovers will find plenty to do at Cane Bay Beach, which even has a full-service dive shop for anything you might need to rent. Diving and snorkeling are big here, and the beach is lined with shady palms.

Culture & History of the St. Croix Cruise Port

A cruise to St. Croix will immerse you in the history of this underrated island. The natives to this area were the Arawak, then the area changed hands to the Carib tribes, The island was visited by Christopher Columbus in 1493, and later, the French occupied the island from 1650 to 1733. Shortly after, the French sold the island to the Danish West Indies Company. Period this period, the sugar and rum trades boomed as a result of slave labor, and cotton and molasses were major exports of the island as well. Danish influence is obvious in St. Croix, and a huge part of their history. In 1917, the Danish West Indies Company sold St. Croix and St. Thomas to the United States.

Today, St. Croix is not only a haven for adventure seekers and ecotourism, but a place with abundant natural beauty, protected wildlife preserves, and is known for plentiful opportunities for diving and snorkeling. In December, the Crucian Christmas Festival is celebrated in Frederiksted and Christiansted, a month-long tradition complete with costumes, food, and parades for both children and adults.

St. Croix Port Facilities & Location

St. Croix’s cruise port is unique because it isn’t as built up as St. Thomas or other parts of the U.S. Virgin Islands. There are a few shops and even fewer distractions at the cruise port, meaning you have to use your stop on a St. Croix cruise wisely and head into parts of Frederiksted right away. Your ship will either dock on the west side of the island at Frederiksted, or further east at Christiansted, a little over 30 minutes away by car.

Transportation in St. Croix

Bus, bicycle, motorbike, and walking are all options for getting around St. Croix. Taking a bus is trickier than getting around in other ways, as the Vitran Public Bus system can run erratically sometimes. There is no bus service on Sundays. You can also rent a car and drive yourself, or take a taxi from the cruise port in Frederiksted to various destinations around the island. Taxi tours are also popular in this area, but you won’t find ride-sharing services on the island. You’ll be able to hail a taxi from the cruise port, where drivers frequently wait.

Shopping Near the St. Croix Cruise Port

Shopping in St. Croix is a little simpler than the bigger name shops on St. Thomas. There are duty-free stores selling local rum and souvenirs in Frederiksted by the cruise port, and more shopping—like boutiques, clothing, and local markets—in the town center. Many shops are closed on Sundays for religious observation.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of the U.S. Virgin Islands is the U.S. dollar (USD). Tipping is much like traveling in other parts of the U.S—leave 15-20% for restaurants and bars, 10-15% for taxis, and leave a dollar or two per bag for bellhops. Don’t forget to tip your tour operators at least 15% of their fee. If you head to one of the flea or farmer’s markets, haggling with vendors is pretty common. Credit cards are commonly accepted, and ATMs are scattered throughout the city too.

St Thomas Island USVI (Charlotte Amalie, US Virgin Islands)

Cruise port schedule, live map, terminals, news.

St Thomas Island USVI cruise port

Region Bahamas - Caribbean - Bermuda

Local Time 2024-09-07 15:35

Port St Thomas Island USVI cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from St Thomas Island USVI, Charlotte Amalie, US Virgin Islands. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Saint Thomas is one of the US Virgin Islands (USVI) in the Caribbean. Together with Saint John and Water Island, it forms a county and district of the USVI (unincorporated USA territory). St Thomas island's population is around 52,000, or about 49% of USVI's total.

On the island is Charlotte Amalie - the USVI's capital city and principal port (locode VISTT).

On September 20, 2023, USVI Port Authority's Board of Governors approved the CCRC/Capital Cost Recovery Charge of (US$5 per cruise passenger (implemented on January 1, 2024) to improve local port facilities. The fee is only for Royal Caribbean Group/RCG-owned ships from RCG's subsidiaries RCI-Royal Caribbean International , Celebrity Cruises and Silversea Cruises . The CCRC is for all RCG passengers whose ships dock at USVI's main cruise ports - Charlotte Amalie (Austin Monsanto Marine Terminal) and Frederiksted/St Croix Island (at Ann E. Abramson Marine Terminal).

The USVI is the only place under USA jurisdiction where the road rule is to drive on the left. It was inherited from what was then-current Danish practice at the time of American acquisition in 1917. Because Saint Thomas is a United States territory, most cars are imported from the mainland USA and therefore the steering column is placed on the left side of the vehicles.

St Thomas has many regular taxis and open-air, covered trucks named "safaris" with bench seats which usually operate only between high-traffic points: cruise-ship terminals at Crown Bay and Havensight and downtown Charlotte Amalie. However, most cruise ships to St Thomas USVI dock at Port Charlotte Amalie.

All USVI beaches (including on St Thomas) are public and free of charge (no entry fees required). The most popular among tourists are Lindquist Beach and Emerald Beach.

St Thomas Island USVI cruise terminal

Cruise ships to Saint Thomas Island dock at Crown Bay's Austin Monsanto Marine Terminal in Charlotte Amalie - a port town on the southern coast.
