Full Cast of Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Every Main Character & Actor Who Appears (Photos)

Star Trek Discovery Season 5 wallpaper characters

As Star Trek: Discovery ’s final season commences, the principal actors from the hit series must say goodbye to characters they have played for several years.

When Star Trek: Discovery premiered in 2017, it was met with its fair share of backlash. Trek die-hards criticized the show’s design, cast, and even the time period in which it was set.

Still, Discovery won over a good portion of fans, many of whom were just glad to have a new Star Trek series again, after the franchise’s extended absence from television. Now, the show has launched Season 5, set to be the show’s final voyage.

The Characters & Actors of Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

Sonequa martin-green - michael burnham.

Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery

Sonequa Martin-Green plays Captain Michael Burnham, the adopted sister of Star Trek icon Mr. Spock. Burnham was given command of the series’ eponymous starship, the USS Discovery, at the end of the third season, after the cast wound up in the far-flung future of the 32nd Century.

Apart from her work on Discovery , which is undeniably her most well-known role, Martin-Green has also been a part of shows like The Walking Dead and The Good Wife .

Doug Jones - Saru

Doug Jones and Saru in Star Trek: Discovery

Veritable chameleon Doug Jones portrays Saru, Burnham’s first officer. Saru is a Kelpian, a species with a kind of biological early warning system that acts like a sixth sense. Saru has served as a fan-favorite since the series began, with many viewers calling for him to take on Discovery’s captain‘s chair.

Doug Jones has appeared in many major projects, but he is often completely unrecognizable, buried under prosthetics and makeup. He was Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies and the Amphibian Man in 2017’s The Shape of Water .

Anthony Rapp - Paul Stamets

Anthony Rapp as Paul Stamets in Star Trek: Discovery

Anthony Rapp plays the groundbreaking role of Commander Paul Stamets, a science officer and one of the two first openly gay Star Trek characters (The other being Stamets’ husband Dr. Hugh Culber).

Rapp has long been a fixture of stage and screen, having performed as a part of several high-profile Broadway shows, such as Rent , in which he was an original cast member.

Mary Wiseman - Sylvia Tilly

Mary Wiseman as Sylvia Tilly in Star Trek: Discovery

Sylvia Tilly, brought to life by Mary Wiseman, started the series as a quirky but very driven cadet on board Discovery. Later on in the series, after the crew’s one-way trip to the future, she took a teaching position at Starfleet Academy.

Mary Wiseman is most famous for her part as Tilly but she’s also appeared in Baskets and the Western show Longmire to name a few.

Wilson Cruz - Hugh Culber

Wilson Cruz as Dr. Hugh Culber in Star Trek: Discovery

Wilson Cruz plays Dr. Hugh Culber, one of the USS Discovery’s physicians. Earlier in the series, Culber was killed by another, out-of-control officer. But eventually, the good doctor was brought back to life through the use of the mycelial network.

Cruz cut his teeth on the classic 1990s teen drama My So-Called Life , playing Rickie. He’s additionally had roles on hits like Grey’s Anatomy , Monk , and The West Wing .

Blu del Barrio - Adira Tal

Blu del Barrio as Adira Tal in Star Trek: Discovery

Adira Tal is portrayed by Blu del Barrio. The character’s backstory involved them becoming the host for a Trill symbiont called Tal, which they inherited from their romantic partner. Currently, Adira is a Starfleet ensign, having been granted commission in Season 3.

Blu del Barrio holds the significant distinction of being Star Trek ’s first openly non-binary actor. They are also a graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

Callum Keith Rennie - Rayner

Callum Keith Rennie as Rayner in Star Trek: Discovery

Callum Keith Rennie’s Rayner is a new character for Season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery . Rayner is a Kellerun, which is a species first introduced in the 1994 episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , “Armageddon Game”.

Rennie has a lengthy resume, starring in a vast array of Canadian shows and films. He has also acted in the Battlestar Galactica reboot as well as Showtime’s Californication .

David Ajala - Cleveland “Book” Booker

David Ajala as Book in Star Trek: Discovery

David Ajala plays Book, a man introduced to the crew upon their arrival in the year 3188. As a Kwejian, Book can empathically connect with plant and animal life, including his pet cat Grudge. He also has a close personal bond with Michael Burnham.

Alaja previously had roles in Nightflyers and CW’s Supergirl , where he played the villainous Manchester Black.

Eve Harlow - Moll

Eve Harlow as Moll in Star Trek: Discovery

Moll, played by Eve Harlow, is a pirate who is seeking an ancient technology that has ties to the classic Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “The Chase”.

Eve Harlow has acted in favorites such as NCIS: Los Angeles and The Rookie . She also played the recurring character Tess on Agents of SHIELD .

Elias Toufexis - L’ak

Elias Toufexis as L’ak in Star Trek: Discovery

L’ak, a green-skinned alien of unknown descent, is played by Elias Toufexis. He serves as Moll’s literal partner in crime.

Toufexis has appeared in another popular sci-fi series The Expanse , as well as several other television series, like Shadowhunters and Criminal Minds .

Oded Fehr - Charles Vance

Oded Fehr as Admiral Vance in Star Trek: Discovery

Oded Fehr plays Admiral Charles Vance, who was introduced to Star Trek: Discovery in Season 3. As commander in chief of Starfleet, Vance wields a considerable amount of influence within the spacefaring organization.

Fehr would be best recognized for his character of Ardeth Bay in 1999’s The Mummy and its 2001 sequel. He’s also guested on shows such as The Blacklist and How to Get Away With Murder .

Chelah Horsdal - Laira Rillak

Chelah Horsdal as Laira Rillak in Star Trek: Discovery

Laira Rillak, in addition to serving as Federation president, is of multi-species descent, a hybrid of human, Cardassian, and Bajoran genetics. Typically, Starfleet and Federation top brass are portrayed as having lesser quality moral fiber, but Rillak has stood out as an exception.

Chelah Horsdal has appeared in a wide variety of movies and series including Arrow , Hell on Wheels , and Rise of the Planet of the Apes .

Tara Rosling  - T’Rina

Tara Rosling as T’Rina in Star Trek: Discovery

T’Rina is a Vulcan woman who first showed up in Discovery in the seventh episode of the third season. Since then, she has become romantically linked with Saru. T’Rina is also president of Ni’Var, the planet formerly known as Vulcan.

In addition to her Star Trek role, Rosling has also cropped up in The Expanse and The Handmaid’s Tale .

David Cronenberg - Kovich

David Cronenberg as Dr. Kovich in Star Trek: Discovery

David Cronenberg portrays Dr. Kovich, a Federation agent and galactic historian. Kovich first appeared in Discovery ’s third season and has gone on to become a well-liked recurring character.

As a veteran filmmaker, David Cronenberg is credited with bringing the genre of body horror into popular culture. His newest film, The Shroud , will hit theaters this year.

Tig Notaro - Jett Reno

Tig Notaro as Jett Reno in Star Trek: Discovery

Comedian Tig Notaro breathes life into Jett Reno, the fast-talking, wise-cracking Discovery engineer with a heart of gold. Reno has more than cemented herself as an audience favorite.

Alongside Notaro’s standup work, she’s had parts in Community , Bob’s Burgers , Suburgatory , and many more.

Star Trek: Discovery can be streamed exclusively on Paramount+ . The next new episode premieres on Thursday, April 11.

Did you know

  • Trivia The Starfleet vessels seen in the first season, including the Discovery, the Shenzou and the redesigned Enterprise, were all designed by production artist John Eaves. Eaves' work with Star Trek spans three decades. Probably his most notable contribution was the design of the Enterprise-E for Star Trek: First Contact (1996) .
  • Goofs With Michael being the adoptive sister of Spock, the series has many flashbacks to their childhood and upbringing on Vulcan. Spock's Vulcan half-brother, Sybok, does not appear nor is mention during these scenes. In Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) , Spock says that he and Sybok grew up together. However, since it's never stated when Sybok joined Sarek's home - only that he did so following his mother's death - or when he was exiled from the family, it's not impossible Sybok moved in after Burnham, and left before she graduated (the two extremes of the flashbacks). Also, since Sybok was never mentioned before Star Trek V, it seems reasonable the family never spoke of him again after his estrangement.

What are the Orion in Star Trek? Explained

Image of Kiona Jones

It used to be that if a Star Trek fan talked about an Orion character, they then had to explain the concept of fetishization in sci-fi TV. The concept of the ‘Orion slave girl’ goes way back to Captain Pike sitting around with a bunch of sleazy guys as they leer at an undulating green woman.

Vina (Susan Oliver) was the first Orion ever introduced into Star Trek , but she certainly wasn’t the last. She was, however, the most influential. From The Next Generation to Discovery , the image of the half-dressed or ne’er-do-well Orion has persisted for years. Only recently has that started to change with new Star Trek TV shows .

Who are the Orion in Star Trek ?

startrek_orion_pirates

They are a green-skinned race of otherwise humanoid beings from the planet Orion. The only thing more advanced than their society is the pervasive stereotypes about them as individuals. There’s the overly sexualized Orion walking around half-dressed, and there’s the stealing Orion with a passion for piracy.

The Original Series brought them in with an emphasis on their seductive nature. Shows like Voyager and Enterprise later gave them a dark edge of criminal tendencies. Newer shows, though, have allowed Orion characters to become more complex. Some like crime, some join Starfleet, and others just want to have a good time.

Notable Orion Characters in Star Trek

startrek_orion_tendi

Lower Decks has truly taken the cake with Lt. D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells). This newly promoted ensign is on the upward track of her Starfleet career and only time will tell just how far she goes. She’s also one of the first Orion officers that we see in a position of power. In season 4, episode 4, “Something Borrowed, Something Green” we even got a rare glimpse into Orion wedding rituals and their wild club life.

However, not all the new Orion characters deviate from the established norm. Osyraa (Janet Kidder) was the leader of the Orion crime syndicate in Discovery . Her favorite pastime was breaking rules and getting rich (as well as enslaving people). Further explanation of this crime group would require a completely different conversation and a rewatch of Deep Space Nine . Just know that they were bad to the bone.

Starfleet represents the social progress of Humans. At the same time, it often highlights just how much work is yet to be done for other alien races. The easiest explanation is that Orion characters will continue to evolve within Star Trek . They just have a lot of stereotypes to beat in the process.

Star Trek: Discovery Introduces First Transgender and Non-Binary Characters

Blu del Barrio and Ian Alexander join the cast for season three.

Star Trek: Discovery

StarTrek.com

CBS All Access, ViacomCBS’ subscription video on-demand and live streaming service, today announced that season three of Star Trek: Discovery will introduce the Star Trek franchise’s first non-binary and transgender characters, furthering the “Star Trek” universe’s ongoing commitment to Gene Roddenberry’s original vision of celebrating diversity and inclusion.

The Star Trek universe’s first non-binary character is Adira, played by Blu del Barrio. Adira is highly intelligent with a confidence and self-assurance well beyond their years. They will find a new home on the U.S.S. Discovery and form an unexpected bond with Lt. Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz). The first transgender character is Gray, portrayed by Ian Alexander. Gray is empathetic, warm and eager to fulfill his lifelong dream of being a Trill host, but he will have to adapt when his life takes an unexpected turn.

“ Star Trek has always made a mission of giving visibility to underrepresented communities because it believes in showing people that a future without division on the basis of race, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation is entirely within our reach,” said Michelle Paradise, co-showrunner and executive producer. “We take pride in working closely with Blu del Barrio, Ian Alexander, and Nick Adams at GLAAD to create the extraordinary characters of Adira and Gray, and bring their stories to life with empathy, understanding, empowerment and joy.”

Star Trek: Discovery - Blu del Barrio

Blu del Barrio is a non-binary actor who uses they/them pronouns. Del Barrio was in their final year of studies at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art when they auditioned for the role of Adira. Del Barrio has been acting in theater and short films since the age of 7, and they’re incredibly excited to make their television acting debut in season three of Discovery .

Star Trek: Discovery - Ian Alexander

Ian Alexander is a 19-year-old actor who uses they/them and he/him pronouns. He is best known for their roles as Buck Vu on the Netflix series “The OA” and Lev in Naughty Dog’s video game “The Last of Us Part II.” They are the first out transgender Asian-American person to act on television. They are also an advocate for transgender equality, racial justice and mental health awareness for LGBTQ+ youth.

The third season of Star Trek: Discovery will premiere on Thursday, Oct. 15. New episodes of Star Trek: Discovery ’s 13-episode third season will be available on demand weekly on Thursdays, exclusively for CBS All Access subscribers in the United States.

It’s not that Cruz doesn’t seem happy as Culber, not at all, but there is a distinct looseness in his portrayal of Jinaal that is miles away from how he plays the calm, contemplative Culber. Jinaal’s no Curzon, but he certainly enjoys having a body again (“This guy really works out!”) and is very enthusiastic about the long hike to the next clue he gets to lead Burnham and Book on.

A consistent criticism I’ve had of Discovery is that the dialogue often feels unreal to me, like something someone wrote and not something someone would really say in the moment. Dialogue in Star Trek has always been highly stylized – even disregarding the technobabble there’s something specific and staid about the way most people in the future speak (and which makes the occasional Jett Renos of the world so immediately refreshing).

But I have to say, the dialogue in “Jinaal” is uniformly great , and Culber’s Jinaal is just the start. It’s full of different textures for different characters, it’s funny, it’s thoughtful without seeming overthought, it’s quick without being quippy. And more than anything, it feels real. One of this episode’s writers — Lauren Wilkinson — joined Discovery this season, with this episode being her first writing credit on the show. Kyle Jarrow, her co-writer, wrote two episodes last season, including one where I spent a decent chunk of my review criticizing its stiff writing, especially for secondary characters.

Discovery has a chronic problem with flattening its secondary characters to silent nods on the bridge and factoids blurted out to superior officers only when the plot demands it. “Jinaal” does this too (a lot!), but it’s with a deliberate self-awareness that turns one of my biggest complaints into one of the episode’s best gags.

star trek discovery orion actor

Back aboard Discovery , demoted Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) is far too impatient and brusque to actually do the ship tour and crew meet-and-greets Burnham has tasked him with; instead, he orders each crewmember to come to his office and tell him something about themselves in 20 words or less.

Thanks to some nimble editing and an understanding that the gag only gets funnier the longer it goes, we get a fast flip through character after character — several of whom we’ve never met before this episode, and several of whom have been around since Day One but who I now, finally actually feel like I know.

Dr. Pollard (Raven Dauda), for example, who’s been on the show since the first season, finally has a personality thanks to the deadpan no-bullshit way she delivered her 20 words. Not only is Linus (David Benjamin Tomlinson) a father three times over (or, three clutches over), it’s clearly something he’s very proud of. Who knew?

And when the crewmembers we don’t know get the “standard Discovery factoid treatment”, it doesn’t feel clunky so much as illuminating. That Bajoran gal who is unbeatable at tongo — Lt. Commander Asha (Christina Dixon) — I believe it and I really want to see it. The new helmsman who had to “save her drag racing story for next time” — Lt. Gallo (Natalie Linconti) — I hope we get to hear it, and I hope it’s not told immediately before a drag race just happens to become a major plot element to save the day.

star trek discovery orion actor

Tilly (Mary Wiseman) is present throughout all of this, and her writing gets a huge boost this episode as well. Tilly is a character I often find myself wanting to like more than I actually do, and who I think has so much potential that’s undermined by writing that doesn’t go any deeper than portraying her as quirky and flustered.

Here though, we get a confident, assertive Tilly, one who still feels true to character, but is a more adult version of that character. Her core motivations are there — her focus on a supportive crew, her concern for treating people with respect — she just has more grown-up way of expressing them. She is, after all, an instructor at the Academy now and can’t be fumbling through every interaction, especially when confronting something that she feels is, in a sense, bullying.

It’s clear from the way the two characters leave their working relationship at the end of the episode that Tilly has gained Rayner’s respect, and that he takes her criticisms of his attitude to heart. He’s still Rayner, he’s still a grouch, but he’s not unreasonable — and he’s not an actual bully. He just finds it easier to pretend to be one.

star trek discovery orion actor

Back on Trill, the hike gives Jinaal a chance to unload some exposition about why this puzzle exists in the first place. Long story short, the group of scientists which included Jinaal and Vellek found the Progenitors’ technology and immediately recognized its incredible power. But with the Dominion War raging they worried about its use and decided to scrub their research and identities from history, and hide the location of the technology away until the galaxy was a more peaceful place.

What isn’t a peaceful place is the canyon Jinaal has lead Book and Burnham to as the supposed location of Trill’s clue. Why? Because gigantic semi-invisible bee moths who shoot red bolts of electricity live in this canyon! I didn’t know it until I watched this episode, but it turns out I’m a very big fan of gigantic semi-invisible bee moths who shoot red bolts of electricity, just FYI. I enjoyed these guys a lot and I’m glad they and their clutch of eggs made it out unscathed. It’s not that I was rooting against Burnham and Book, but more that I was just firmly on Team Bee Moth.

The bee moths themselves were also a test: a way for Jinaal to observe how Burnham and Book behaved when faced with an innocent aggressor (they were wild animals simply protecting their young, after all) before deciding to give them the clue. In choosing to prioritize the bee moths, they pass and Jinaal hands them another map piece… which was never where he said it was in the first place.

Mission over, Jinaal is returned to Bix and — if I understood the episode’s closing montage correctly — Bix is pretty immediately returned to the milk pools. I’m sure the moment was supposed to be one of happiness and contentment, watching a symbiont finally get to take a nap after fulfilling a lifelong mission, but all I could think about was Bix’s current host.

That old lady may have been tired but she certainly didn’t look to be on death’s door so, uh, is she okay? I’m thinking she might not be okay.

Meanwhile throughout all of this, Saru (Doug Jones) and T’Rina (Tara Rosling) have their first fight… one that’s very polished and diplomatic, but no less serious than if it had involved bigger displays of emotion. It’s time for an engagement announcement to be sent out, and what first seems like a minor quibble over some language thanks to Saru’s modesty — does T’Rina have to refer to him as “the handsome and erudite Captain Saru”? – quickly becomes a matter with much larger consequences.

T’Rina’s assistant Duvin (Victor Andrés Trelles Turgeon) who carries on the long and proud tradition of snooty Vulcans you kind of want to punch, is concerned with the optics of her union with an “outsider” — particularly with respect to what the Vulcan Purist movement is going to think about it. Saru decides to cancel the announcement “for” T’Rina, T’Rina feels that Saru has overstepped, and it’s icy for about five minutes until they make up and Saru admits that he doesn’t have a whole lot of experience being in this type of love.

It’s refreshing to see mature adult characters talking about their lack of experience with relationships, as it’s really not something you see often. Usually storylines about learning how to navigate love are contained to younger characters, and understandably so, but not everyone figures these things out at the same pace.

Another well-handled relationship moment occurs between Adira and Gray, both of whom are genuinely happy to see each other, but who also recognize that things have changed between them. As with Book and Burnham, I don’t know that Adira and Gray will remain broken up through the rest of the series, but for now anyway they’ve decided to move on from being a couple.

OBSERVATION LOUNGE

  • We have another mention of the Breen. Between these references, L’ak’s (Elias Toufexis) mysterious identity and quips about helmets, I’m officially joining in on the speculation that he’s Breen.
  • I’m a big fan of Rayner’s personality quirk of using slightly old-fashioned human expressions with a deadpan scowl on his face. Never has “I can walk and chew gum at the same time” sounded so irritable. Keep it up.
  • “To rush a sehlat is to risk a goring.” Between this and “It is difficult to ride two valebeasts with only one set of buttocks” from “Choose to Live,” Saru is a veritable font of folksy aphorisms.
  • Was that a Selay , the cobra-headed aliens first seen in TNG ’s “Lonely Among Us”, at the negotiating table? Why I do believe it was.

star trek discovery orion actor

  • According to Tilly’s data regarding Trill, the planet has a 26.5-hour day and a 483-day year.
  • Like human fingerprints, Trill spots are unique to each individual — and it seems the Trill government keeps records of all spot patterns, even after 800 years.
  • While Gray permanently inhabits his clone body through the Trill zhian’tara ritual, Culber’s z hian’tara experience parallels the Deep Space 9 crew; they took on the personalities and knowledge of Dax’s previous hosts in “Facets.”
  • Saru’s office at Starfleet Headquarters is filled with many alien plants, like his quarters aboard Discovery .
  • Jinaal notes that the discovery of Progenitor tech occurred during the Dominion War, meaning that his group of scientists hid the bounty no later than 2375 (when the war concluded). “The Chase” took place in 2369, just six years earlier.
  • Lt. Commander Nillson has transferred to the Voyager -J, meaning it’s unlikely we’ll see actor Sara Mitich this season.

star trek discovery orion actor

  • The bartender in Red’s serves Tilly a glass of green Ferengi Slug-O Cola, introduced on Deep Space Nine and last seen in Picard Season 3.
  • Reno’s complaint about chips refers to her Starfleet interrogation in Season 3’s “Die Trying.”
  • The “day for night” filter used during the Trill canyon night scenes isn’t very effective when the actors have visible shadows.
  • The latest Progentitor clue leads to coordinates located in Tzenkethi space, a dangerous species mentioned twice in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
  • As foreshadowed at the beginning of the episode, we see Burnham kneeling in a Vulcan meditative pose, exactly like Spock in Star Trek II. (Someone please get her some of those little knee pillows Sarek had in “Light and Shadows,” the floor of her quarters has to be pretty hard to kneel on!)

star trek discovery orion actor

Adira says their goodbyes to the guardians before beaming up to the ship, and as they do so… oh no, one of the guardians is Mol (Eve Harlow) — and she’s slipped a tracking chip onto Adira before slinking away into the shadows!

Was Mol there the whole time, and if so, was she worried that any of the Trill present were going to realize she had no idea how to do any of the ceremonial stuff that she was presumably fumbling her way through? Probably not, as a seasoned galactic mercenary she’s way too cool for that. But I would have been.

Sonequa Martin-Green

“Between season 1 and season 5 is an entire life.” That’s a real understatement on the part of Sonequa Martin-Green in an interview with Den of Geek magazine , describing the five-season and seven-year journey of her character Michael Burnham, the protagonist of Star Trek: Discovery .

When we first met Burnham way back in 2017, she was the first officer on the USS Shenzhou, a Starfleet ship operating about a decade before the events of The Original Series , and under the command of Captain Philippa Georgiou ( Michelle Yeoh ). By the end of the two-part premiere, Georgiou was dead and Burnham was in prison for mutiny.

Things have certainly changed since then. We begin Discovery ‘s fifth and final season with Captain Michael Burnham of the USS Discovery, but adventuring over 900 years after the events of the premiere. Yeah, it’s been a wild journey, one that incurred more than a little criticism early on for its break from traditional Star Trek storytelling. But it’s also a journey that’s resulted in one of the most unique characters in Star Trek history.

The Early Voyages of Michael Burnham

Rewatching season one of Discovery , it’s clear that Burnham was always designed to be a different type of Trek protagonist. Unlike the previous shows, early Discovery focused less on the ensemble and more on Burnham herself. Moreover, Burnham wasn’t the captain of a ship, but rather an officer with a checkered past, serving under Georgiou, then the Mirror Universe escapee Gabriel Lorca (hello to Jason Isaacs ), and then Enterprise Captain Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ), not taking official command until the series’ third season.

Ad – content continues below

That unusual journey meant Burnham had to regularly adapt to wildly different settings and a few status-quo shattering plot twists, including the show’s jump to the 32nd century between seasons two and three, while still remaining a consistent character.

When asked how she managed to pull off that tricky acting challenge, Martin-Green gives the most Star Trek answer possible. “It’s the company. It’s the crew and the cast,” she tells Den of Geek at SXSW 2024 . “All of those things help keep Burnham consistent. I don’t maintain that consistency in a vacuum. I have a lot of people to be grateful for it.”

Those people include executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise, the latter of whom joined the series toward the end of the second season, after the series lost three previous showrunners, and helped shepherd Discovery ‘s new status quo in the 32nd century. While sitting next to Kurtzman, Paradise, and David Ajala (Book) during the interview at SXSW, Martin-Green says, “The truth of the matter, I praise God for everyone I’m sitting at this couch with.”

Michael Burnham of the 32nd Century

One of the biggest developments with Burnham involved her connection with Cleveland Booker (Ajala), a roguish smuggler whom she befriended during her first year in the 32nd century, before the Discovery made it through the time warp to join her in season three.

It’s apparent during our chat with them at SXSW, as they laugh and reminisce about their three seasons working together, that Martin-Green and Ajala have become great friends in real-life. Together, they excitedly tease a specific episode in the upcoming season “where Michael Burnham has to do some soul-searching and character unpacking.” Those are Ajala’s words as he describes how “glorious” it was to play that episode opposite Martin-Green. “It was a joy working with you too with that one,” she replies in a heartwarming moment with her co-star.

But as much as we’ve learned about Burnham and Book over the last few years, there’s actually still a piece of their story missing: what adventures did they get up to in the year between Burnham’s arrival in the 32nd century and her reunion with the crew of the Discovery? When Den of Geek magazine asks Martin-Green about that backstory, the actor reveals she actually knows the details.

“I will tell you: I created an entire timeline for myself for that year of everything that Burnham and Book did. What was this big thing that happened month three? What’s this big thing that happened seven months in?”

Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

With the help of not only Burnham and Book’s partnership, but also Saru (Doug Jones), Tilly (Mary Wiseman), Stamets (Anthony Rapp), Culber (Wilson Cruz), and the rest of the crew, Discovery has gone through a clear evolution over its five seasons. What began as an odd-ball solo adventure (original Discovery creator Bryan Fuller imagined the show as an anthology , with each season exploring another part of Star Trek lore) has transformed into a true ensemble.

No, it may not look like other Trek ensembles. Although Paradise assures Den of Geek that she and her co-creators “love our bridge crew,” it remains to be seen how much attention characters such as Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) and Rhys (Patrick Kwok-Choon) will get in the final season. But Burnham is very much part of a community now.

“Season 1, you found me and everyone else kind of grappling under the pressure of the franchise and wanting to do it justice and wanting to make everybody proud,” Martin-Green recalls when Den of Geek magazine asks her what she feels is the biggest difference between her first year and her last on the show. “And then, we came to season 5 not knowing it would be our last season. And yet, we came to this knowing and understanding who we are. I think that journey comes with freedom, and actualization, and leads to better creativity. In season 5, we’re a fully formed found family.”

Bringing Michael Burnham Home

That sense of comfort and family that Martin-Green describes leads to an openness that has served Discovery well in its last three seasons. By going to the 32nd century, Discovery has pushed Star Trek further in the timeline than any other entry in the franchise. That undiscovered country has given them plenty of room to play around, introducing concepts such as Ni’Var, the renamed planet Vulcan now inhabited by reunified Vulcans and Romulans, and the Orion and Andorian crime syndicate the Emerald Chain, which enters into a treaty with the flagging Federation of the future.

The final season of Discovery will take full advantage of that playfulness, with Paradise promising a “treasure hunt” full of adventure and a lighter tone.

But what does this mean for Burnham herself? We know that Trek won’t leave the 32nd century yet, with a Starfleet Academy series now in production. And the Mirror Universe equivalent of Burnham’s old CO Philippa Georgiou will return in the upcoming Section 31 TV movie. Are there plans for a new Burnham adventure after Discovery ?

Martin-Green doesn’t let any news slip, but it’s clear that she has thoughts on her character’s future. When we ask her whether she’d be interested in continuing Burnham’s adventures on the page, the actor jumps on the idea.

“Well, I’ll just say I wouldn’t be opposed! Anything is possible,” she says. To be sure, past Trek characters have lived long and eventful lives in non-canonical novels, comics, and video games. In fact, sometimes the actors who played those Trek characters come back to write some of those adventures, such as the acclaimed Garak novel A Stitch in Time by Andrew Robinson and the… uh, interesting post- Star Trek: Generations Kirk novels written by William Shatner .

“We’ve seen that anything is possible in this franchise,” Martin-Green continues. “Of course, anything [more about Burnham and Discovery ] would need to be earned, but it is possible.”

Exciting as the idea is, Martin-Green isn’t getting ahead of herself. “But, for now, I have to applaud our showrunner, Michelle Paradise, and the writers. Because they created that addendum shoot that we did after we found out that this was going to be the end. That piece that is added at the end — I don’t know how it’s so conclusive — but it’s conclusive in the richest way. Maybe the better way to say it is that it’s honorable. It’s an honorable end.”

An honorable end is a fitting end for Michael Burnham, a character who started out getting in trouble because of her knowledge of Klingons and ended up rebuilding the Federation in the 32nd century. That is an entire life, and a good one at that.

Who played the Orion science vessel captain in Star Trek’s “Those Old Scientists”?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds brought in a well-versed character actor for “Those Old Scientists”.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has developed a well-earned reputation for bringing in great talent to play key characters during the show’s run. While names like Ethan Peck (Spock), and Anson Mount (Christopher Pike), are clearly great talents, the show has succeeded beyond just the starring names we’ve seen. Names like Bruce Horak, and Paul Wesley have come in and really stolen the show.

But it doesn’t stop there. In “Those Old Scientists” we got to meet a minor character named Harr Caras, a little-known Orion ship captain who claimed to not be a pirate. Though, their actions during the events of the show seem to suggest differently. After stealing a portal that the Enterprise needed, the two sides would eventually come to a deal where Caras would get credit for discovering the portal if the Orions would allow Captain Pike and his crew to use the portal once.

In doing so, the Orion’s history was changed forever, with the alien race being able to be seen as more than just pirates going forward. All because of Harr Caras.

Who played Harr Caras in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ “Those Old Scientists”

Harr Caras came across as a very likable side character in the crossover episode, a hard feat considering how hard it is to convey authenticity in such limited action. And while you may not recognize the name, you surely will know that the man who played Harr Caras was Greg Bryk.

Bryk isn’t a name you’d recognize but he’s been in over 100 different movies, shows, or games in his career.

He’s appeared in the Far Cry series, playing Joseph Seed, as well as sci-fi (and SyFy) shows, Handmade’s Tale, Channel Zero, Wynonna Earp, Fargo, XIII, Nikita, and the werewolf show; Bitten.

Tolor was a male Orion who lived in the 32nd century . He was the nephew of Osyraa , the leader of the Emerald Chain . When he was a child, Osyraa had Tolor's father killed for challenging her control of the mercantile exchanges . Afterward, she took Tolor in and eventually granted him a position running the salvage yard on Hunhau .

In 3189 , Tolor was fooled by Commander Michael Burnham and Philippa Georgiou into allowing them entry to his facility. Under the guise of shopping for pre- 2400 technology , they made contact with Cleveland Booker , who had been captured by the Emerald Chain, and arranged a mass escape of the slave laborers at the yard. Though Tolor apprehended Burnham and Georgiou, they overpowered him and he was forced to flee via his portable transporter .

For allowing Ryn to escape, Osyraa had Tolor fed to a trance worm . ( DIS : " Scavengers ", " The Sanctuary ")

Star Trek: Discovery’s Rayner Actor Hints At Backstory With Season 5’s New Villains

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

  • Captain Rayner's history with new villains Moll and L'ak is central to Star Trek: Discovery season 5's plot.
  • Rayner's obsession with capturing Moll and L'ak causes tension with Captain Burnham and leads to a demotion.
  • Callum Keith Rennie hints at a backstory for Rayner that explains his motivations and connection to the new villains.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's new series regular, Callum Keith Rennie, hints at the backstory between his character, Captain Rayner, and season 5's new villains Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis). All three debuted in Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere , "Red Directive," and the animosity between the surly Starfleet Captain of the USS Antares and the rogue, Bonnie and Clyde-like lovers, was immediately clear. Rayner's obsession with capturing L'ak and Moll puts him at odds with Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), who nonetheless offers Rayner the First Officer role on the USS Discovery after he's demoted.

In an upcoming exclusive interview with Screen Rant about Star Trek: Discovery season 5 and Captain Rayner, Callum Keith Rennie was asked if Rayner has a backstory that will be revealed. Rennie hinted at how Rayner's history is tied to his past encounters with Moll and L'ak . Read his quote below:

There's a backstory that kind of lets you know why he's wired the way he's wired, and why the Moll and L’ak thing is getting him in a way that's wound him up, maybe.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Rayner's star trek: discovery career change is partly due to moll & l'ak, captain rayner nearly ruined his starfleet career until burnham made him her number one.

Captain Rayner nearly got himself drummed out of Starfleet for insubordination in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 2 , "Under the Twin Moons," and part of it was because of his obsession with Moll and L'ak. Rayner was more concerned with capturing the couriers than saving the people of Q'Mau from an avalanche in Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere. Whatever happened between L'ak, Moll, and Rayner self-destructively drives the Kellerun Starfleet Officer to subsume his better judgment in his desire to catch the thieving lovers.

Rayner is obviously having trouble adjusting to the peace forged by the USS Discovery.

What little Star Trek: Discovery season 5 has revealed about Rayner so far shows him to be an intense, humorless man who puts his mission - in Discovery 's case, a Red Directive - above all else. Yet his old friend, Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr), speaks highly of Rayner , who comes from The Burn era of the United Federation of Planets. Rayner is obviously having trouble adjusting to the peace forged by the USS Discovery. Rayner's tumultuous backstory with Moll and L'ak will be a fascinating piece of information to learn in Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Star Trek: Discovery’s Rayner Actor Hints At Backstory With Season 5’s New Villains

An interview with Janet Kidder on Osyraa and why Star Trek is different

Janet Kidder as Osyraa

It was more than the green which made Osyraa such a compelling character. While the makeup, costume, and hair were excellent, Osyraa was created both by the writers of Discovery and actor Janet Kidder, who brought the Emerald Chain’s villainous leader to life.

From the very moment she walked onto the screen, Osyraa could not be ignored. Her appearances on Season 3 of  Star Trek: Discovery  made for the most interesting and exciting episodes. Many were sad to learn Osyraa’s fate.

Kidder is a veteran actor who is not new to the science fiction genre. She appeared in Amazon’s  Man In The High Castle , on CW’s  Arrow , and in many other starring roles. You may have seen her in the  Bride of Chucky  or the recent holiday film,  Operation Christmas Drop . Canadian fans know her as Cpl. Marina Del Luzio in the drama series  Tom Stone .

There was something about the role of Osyraa that was different for Kidder than all those other parts. It was the weight of Star Trek, which she didn’t quite understand until that first day on the set. Luckily for her, a familiar face came to see her before shooting started on Episode 8, “ The Sanctuary .”

star trek discovery orion actor

“Jonathan [Frakes] welcomed me warmly to the  family  and said how excited he was to work with me on this role,” says Kidder. Frakes served both as the director of the episode and the welcomer-in-chief to the tight-knit Star Trek actors’ fraternity.

“We shared ideas, and I realized how privileged I was to be embarking on this journey with him and the rest of the family,” says Kidder.

“From our very first conversation, Jonathan’s passion for the Star Trek world began to rub off on me,” says Kidder. “As a novice whose knowledge of the genre was limited to  The Original Series  with Captain Kirk, it was suddenly clear that the magic of this universe was quite real.”

Their conversation must have helped Kidder find her footing in Trek because Osyraa was a wonderful, late-season addition to the story. While she was an oppositional character, Kidder says that she felt a real motivation behind Osyraa’s actions. She wasn’t just an evil person who liked to be mean to others.

That being said, Kidder admits that outside of the four hours of makeup each morning, the role was a lot of fun.

“I have to say that playing the bad guy is an absolute gem of an opportunity,” says Kidder.

“To be able to live outside the codes and restrictions of our daily, ‘good’ person ethics is such a treat,” she says. “I believe we all have many aspects of our personalities — or souls if you like — that we never tap into during our normal lives, and so to be able to ignite the darkest kept sides of ourselves is an incredibly cathartic experience.”

Unfortunately, the ‘treat’ came to an end when Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) shot Osyraa two or three times in the Discovery ’s data core.

However, one must wonder the deaths of the previous season’s bad guys were much more dramatic — and gruesome. Captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs) fell into a pulsating ball of energy in space. Leland (Alan van Sprang) died when an evil artificial intelligence took over his body.

Kidder is no stranger to the genre of science fiction. She appeared on Amazon's Man In The High Castle, which streamed from 2015-19. Courtesy of Amazon

Could there be a chance that Osyraa may have survived those shots?

“Well, who knows?” says Kidder. “Such a terrifying foe, one could imagine all sorts of possibilities, and believe me, I have.”

“I could happily play Osyraa for as long as they let me,” says Kidder.

Perhaps fans will get to see more of Kidder as Osyraa in future episodes. After all, haven’t we seen Commander Ellen Landry (Rekha Sharma) die three times? Osyraa might also have more lives than just one.

While the death of Osyraa is official for now, Kidder says she will never forget this experience and feels that it was different than just about any other role she’s performed.

“The difference with  Star Trek  is that this is not just a show, it’s part of an entire, impeccably crafted universe,” says Kidder.

“The history alone gives it such validity as a franchise, and I can honestly say that I have never been on such a welcoming, enthusiastic, and dedicated set.”

“Cast, crew, directors, producers, everybody involved is thrilled to be there. The energy is palpable and just infuses you with something magical,” says Kidder. “[It was] a truly amazing experience that I will never forget.”

Janet Kidder will be a part of upcoming in-person and digital Star Trek fan events created by the great folks at Coolwaters Productions . Be sure to follow Coolwaters Productions on social media for the latest announcements on their upcoming events.

'Star Trek: Discovery's Crew Needs a Trial By Fire to Connect With Captain Rayner, Says Callum Keith Rennie

"Who's gonna come up with the solution at the right time under duress? Everyone's a backseat driver until you're in the arena."

The Big Picture

  • As the new XO on Discovery, Rayner's priority remains on Moll and L'ak, Callum Keith Rennie explains.
  • Rennie says that the crew won't really get to know their new second officer until they go through a crisis together.
  • We'll see more Rayner and Tilly scenes in Discovery Season 5.

With Captain Burnham out on a very important away mission to Trill in the latest episode of Star Trek: Discovery , "Jinaal," the crew are left in the capable-if-presently-single-minded hands of their new first officer, Captain Rayner. Ahead of the episode, I sat down to speak with actor Callum Keith Rennie about Rayner's new role as second in command. As the new XO, Rayner is tasked with getting to know the crew in this episode, however, his priority remains on Moll and L'ak.

During his brief meetings with each crewmember, Stamets delivered the revelation that the thing they're after may very well be able to bring someone back from the dead. When asked if that knowledge altered Rayner's motivation at all — he seems like someone whose lost people — Rennie confirmed he's got tunnel vision for antagonists Moll and L'ak. He said: "His thing is a Moll and L’ak. That's his thing: get the bad guys. That's it. He was sort of given an under-the-table direction — “at any cost” — because of what they're holding, what they're doing, what they threaten. So, that's his thing. He sticks to his priority."

While Rayner gave each crew member approximately 20 words to introduce themselves, Rennie felt that Rayner would have even fewer for himself. "I don't have 20 words," he joked. "He knows full well that anybody saying anything about themselves is one thing, and that ain't real. That's just them talking." For Rayner, actions speak louder than words. Rennie explained:

"The participation or you're in the trenches and you're fighting a battle, or you're overcoming something with someone, you'll learn about them. But someone telling you about themselves, there's nothing. That's just facts, and it will always be facts until you do something with them, until you endure something with them, until you accomplish something with them. So, I don't have the 20 words. I’d just say, “F— you, I’m not saying 20 words.”"

Rayner's Relationship With Tilly Will Come Back

Tilly got her moment to put Rayner in his place in Episode 3, and when asked if that combative yet understanding, connection will come back, Rennie confirmed that it "pops up a few times." Rennie also had high praise for his co-star . Of Mary Wiseman he said, "Mary's amazing to be in a scene with, and she's delightful and great. I can't say enough about her." He went on to explaine Rayner's fish out of water experience. "But there's the part of me going, “Okay, hang on. Let me get this straight: I'm a commander of the Antares , and then I go to help Burnham because they're in a bit of a crisis, and then all of a sudden I lose my job and I now have to listen to other people tell me what to do? Not cool.” [Laughs]

The Discovery crew won't really get to know Rayner until they go through a major experience with him . Rennie noted, "They haven't been through a thing yet. You don’t know what’s what… yet ." Rayner wants to see who the crew is when it's do or die, Rennie explained, "Yeah, who's gonna make the right call? Who's gonna come up with the solution at the right time under duress? Everyone's a backseat driver until you're in the arena."

New episodes of Star Trek: Discovery arrive on Paramount+ every Thursday. Stay tuned at Collider for our full chat with Rennie.

Sonequa Martin-Green bids farewell to historic role on "Star Trek: Discovery"

By Analisa Novak

April 4, 2024 / 12:07 PM EDT / CBS News

As "Star Trek: Discovery " ventures into its fifth and final season, Sonequa Martin-Green is preparing to say goodbye to her groundbreaking role as Captain Michael Burnham, the first Black female captain in the franchise's storied history.

Martin-Green recalls the weight of realizing she was making television history.

"It was overwhelming at the time. And I it was heavy, but God really blessed me with it, and I learned so much from it. I learned so much about who I am as a Black woman. And I learned that I don't have to fight for my value or my worth, because I definitely felt that way," she said.

When she first started in the role in 2017, Martin-Green said she still had a lot of internalized racism she had to navigate. But just like the show, Martin-Green said she has always been about pushing forward with hope.

"At the time, I thought, 'This is all about hope.' Hope is at the center of this franchise. It's our responsibility to keep that moving forward. People can think what they want to think but they need a chance to grow," she said.

In addition to her on-screen achievements, Martin-Green has also made significant strides behind the camera, ascending from lead actor to executive producer. Her dual role has allowed her to shape the series' direction.

Martin-Green said that the final season of "Star Trek: Discovery" will go "bigger than we had ever done before." Despite not knowing it would be their last season, the team, led by showrunners Michelle Paradise and Alex Kurtzman, fought for and received the opportunity reshoot the series' finale.

As "Discovery" comes to a close, Martin-Green hints at the possibility of continuing the story through a feature film.

"We love these characters. We love the people. We love the story," she said.
