Star trek picard season 3: release date, trailers, and where to stream.

Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming third season of Picard.

Patrick Stewart got to step back into one of his most iconic roles in 2020, with the release of Star Trek: Picard on CBS All Access (now Paramount+ ). Now, the second season is complete, and Paramount has already announced the cast, a release date, and even an official trailer for season three. Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming season three of Picard.

Picard season 3: What to expect

The first season of Star Trek: Picard dealt with two events that were actually holdovers from different Star Trek films in the past: Data's death in 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis (Picard struggles with this throughout the first season), and the destruction of Romulus in 2009's Star Trek (which was used to introduce the synthetic humans that helped prevent the rescue of Romulan refugees and ultimately set the stage for Picard to resign from Star Fleet). The synths are subject to a ban, and Picard is pushed to help them because of two synthetic twins that are related to his old friend Data.

Spoiler alert: This all culminates in Picard finding the home of Data's original creator and himself becoming a synthetic at the end of season one to prevent his own death.

This brings us to where we last left Picard - blasting off on the ship La Sirena with a new makeshift crew, heading toward whatever new adventure awaits. The second season starts with Picard transported to the year 2024 along with some of his old friends from Star Trek: The Next Generation series (such as Jerri Ryan’s Seven of Nine and Michelle Hurd’s Raffi Musiker). Picard and friends must discover what the omnipotent Q (John De Lancie) has done to change the timeline that has created a xenophobic version of Starfleet - the Confederation of Earth - which is out to destroy all aliens.

The first teaser for season three sees him rummaging through his old Star Trek: The Next Generation gear, and then we see him and his old partner Riker (Jonathan Frakes), standing side by side, pointing phasers at someone. The teaser also promises more returning characters in season three such as Brent Spinner as Data and Levar Burton as Geordi La Forge. The official trailer for season three is also vague on plot details, but it does show a new ship: The USS Titan, commanded by Captain William T. Riker. We also see Dr. Crusher fighting off masked enemies with a rifle, and a Federation building exploding. 

Picard season 3: Release date

A release date for Star Trek: Picard season three is set for 16 February 2023.

Keep in mind the production and filming of seasons two and three all began simultaneously in 2020. The second season of Star Trek: Picard premiered in March 2022 - two years after season one ended - while season three is releasing in early 2023.  Jonathan Frakes and Terry Matalas are directing the final season, with 12 Monkeys creator Terry Matalas stepping in as showrunner for the season.

Picard season 3: Cast and crew

LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, and Brent Spiner have been announced by Paramount to join Patrick Stewart in the cast of Star Trek: Picard season three.

Picard season 3: Where to stream

The third season isn't yet available. Below is where you'll likely be able to stream it when it does release.

The second season of Picard took Discovery's Thursday timeslot on Paramount+ . It premiered in March 2022 and is still airing. The third season hasn't yet premiered but will obviously be a Paramount+ exclusive.

Amazon Prime Video is Picard's home in the UK, with new episodes airing a day later starting on 4 March 2022. One has to assume season three will also come to Prime Video in the UK, but it's not confirmed.

In Canada, season two is available on Crave. We suspect season three will also be available via Crave once it premieres in early 2023. 

Picard season 3: Trailers

One official trailer is available for the new season -- below. It shows Patrick Stewart back for a final adventure, paired with his original crew from Star Trek: The Next Generation. We see LeVar Burton's Geordi La Forge, Michael Dorn’s Worf, Gates McFadden's Dr. Beverly Crusher, and Marina Sirti'’ Deanna Troi. Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner also return to the series, alongside Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd. 

Two other teaser trailers have been released for the third season. You can watch them both below, to get a look at a few returning cast members from The Next Generation.

The trailer above debuted at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022, while the one below came out a little earlier in 2022.

Both confirm that we're going to see some familiar faces in the last season of Picard.

Boldly going on one last journey, Patrick Stewart returns as Starfleet's beloved captain for Star Trek: Picard season 3.

The show first hit screens back in 2020 as a follow-up to fan-favorite series, Star Trek: The Next Generation,   chronicling   Captain Jean-Luc Picard life 20 years after his last appearance in Star Trek: Nemesis.

This latest run sees Picard take on a new adversary in the form of Amanda Plummer's mysterious Vadic, while also promising appearances from series veterans LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn and Gates McFadden.

You can stream Star Trek: Picard Season 3 on Paramount Plus in the US and UK, and for free on City TV in Canada. We'll also show you how to use a virtual private network, or VPN, if you're outside of your home country and want to watch the show, or want some streaming privacy.

Release dates for Star Trek: Picard Season 3 in the US, UK and Australia

No matter where you are in the world, if you want to stream the show, it will only be available on Paramount Plus. You can sign up for an ad-supported or ad-free subscription. There is also a free seven-day trial available. Here's when Star Trek: Picard Season 3 will be released on the platform:

• Stream it in the US from Thursday, Feb. 16 . New releases typically drop around 3 a.m. ET (12 a.m. PT).
• For viewers in the UK or Australia, unlike previous seasons, Star Trek: Picard season 3, will not be appearing on Amazon Prime Video, and can instead be found on Paramount Plus, with the first episode premiering on Friday, Feb. 17. As with the US, new episodes will be released on the service each week at the same time from then on.

Paramount Plus

Paramount Plus has two main subscription plans in the US: Essential for $5 a month ($50 a year if paying annually) and Premium for $10 a month ($100 a year if paying annually). Both offer Star Trek: Picard Season 3.

The cheaper Essential option has ads for on-demand streaming and lacks live CBS feeds as well as the ability to download shows to watch offline later. Students may qualify for a 25% discount. 

In the UK, membership costs a flat rate of £7 a month or £69.90 if you want a yearly sub, although a one week-long free trial is available for new customers.

How to watch Star Trek: Picard Season 3 in Canada

Canadian Trekkies have two options for watching the final installments of Picard. The new season will be airing on Bell Media's CTV Sci-Fi Channel, but if you're a cord-cutter you can stream the show via Crave.

CTV Sci-Fi Channel will be showing new episodes every Thursday at 9 p.m. ET from Feb. 16, with the third season episodes appearing on Crave every Thursday from the same date.

Crave boasts access to classic HBO series, on-demand movies, Showtime content, plus Crave originals. Members can watch shows including The Last of Us, The Gloaming, Yellowjackets and The White Lotus.

A subscription currently costs CA$10 a month for the basic Crave Mobile tier or £20 per month for Crave Total, which includes downloads and four streams at a time. New subscribers can meanwhile get access to a seven-day free trial.

What time is ‘Star Trek: Picard’ season 3 on Amazon Prime Video?

Sir Patrick Stewart returns as Captain Jean-Luc Picard for the final time alongside some old friends

The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard is set to air later this week.

The Star Trek spin-off was first announced back in 2018 with a trailer following in 2019. Star Trek: Picard then premiered in 2020, with a second season airing in 2022.

Set in in 2399, 20 years after Jean-Luc Picard’s last appearance in Star Trek: Nemesis (2002), Star Trek: Picard finds the character deeply affected by the death of Data and the destruction of the planet Romulus.

“Retired from Starfleet and living on his family’s vineyard, Picard is drawn into a new adventure when he is visited by an apparent daughter of Data, one of several new synthetic beings, or ‘synths’,” reads a synopsis.

A third and final season was “informally” green lit back in 2020, so it could be filmed back-to-back with season 2 before Stewart officially confirmed the season in 2021, with filming wrapping in March 2022.

When is Star Trek: Picard season 3 released on Amazon Prime Video?

US audiences can watch the first episode of Star Trek: Picard season 3 on Thursday, February 16 via Paramount+ with the show hitting Amazon Prime Video the following day (February 17) for UK audiences.

Episodes will then be released weekly, with UK viewers able to watch them at midnight GMT. The finale will be available to watch on Amazon Prime Video on April 20.

Is there a trailer for season 3?

An official trailer for Picard season 3 was shared earlier this month, and can be viewed above.

A synopsis reads: “In the epic, thrilling conclusion of Star Trek: Picard , a desperate message from a long-lost friend draws Starfleet legend Admiral Jean-Luc Picard into the most daring mission of his life, forcing him to recruit allies spanning generations old and new. This final adventure sets him on a collision course with the legacy of his past and explosive, new revelations that will alter the fate of the Federation forever.”

As it stands, Star Trek: Picard season 3 is set to be Stewart’s final outing as Picard. “When we started the series, Patrick and we all talked about really wanting it to just be three years, feeling like we could really tell a complete story with the season you’re now seeing as our endpoint,” said series producer Alex Kurtzman (via TVLine ).

“That being said, anything is possible. If a show blows the doors off the place, as we’re certainly hoping it will, and we’re very, very proud of season 3, who knows,” he added, suggesting a fourth season is possible.

Stewart said he’d be up for returning “if we can maintain the work that we did on seasons 1, 2 and 3 of Picard . There is still enormous potential for narrative in what we’ve been doing, and there are doors left open, still. We didn’t close all of them,” he explained.

At least we won't have to wait as long for season two as we did season three. To make up for lost production time mid-pandemic, the Powers That Be at Star Trek decided to film the second and third seasons back-to-back in case of more delays.

Pretty smart thinking right? And now it's just a matter of waiting for the series to be put together and given some A-Star effects treatment to get it perfect for fans.

But what lies ahead in the final instalment?

Star Trek: Picard season 3 release date: When will it air?

Star Trek: Picard fans can rest easy in the knowledge that the third and final season will be with them on February 12, 2023. The news came accompanied by a brand spanking new teaser trailer (more on that below).

As previously mentioned, season three was filmed immediately after season two, which wasn't exactly easy for anyone involved, least of all Patrick Stewart.

Speaking to Variety following the season-two finale, everyone's favourite captain revealed that filming wrapped for season three in March 2022. Five weeks later, Sir Patrick admitted he was "still recovering from it"... which gives us all kinds of excitement for what's coming up.

"It was very intense," Sir Patrick said. "We filmed the 10 episodes of season two and wrapped it at about seven o'clock in the evening, and began season three at seven o'clock the next morning. And it was like that for about 13 months, I think. Longer than a year, I know that."

Star Trek: Picard season 3 cast: Who's coming back?

Following the events of season two, we expect the following cast members will return for Picard season three, including: Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, Michelle Hurd as Rafaella "Raffi" Musiker, Evan Evagora as Elnor, and Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine .

One notable exception to this will be Alison Pill after she recently confirmed that Agnes Jurati won't be returning in the final season.

"I know that season three will be the end," Pill told MovieWeb . "I wasn't a part of season three, so I don't have much to say about it in terms of spoilers. I will get to watch along with everybody else."

There's also a question mark around Santiago Cabrera's involvement now that Cristobal "Chris" Rios has decided to stay in the past and live out his life there instead.

Thankfully, some very special cast members have been lined up to take their place. Before season two even finished airing, Picard had already announced that a huge number of classic characters from Next Generation play a key role in season three .

These include: LeVar Burton (Lt Commander Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Worf), Gates McFadden (Dr Beverly Crusher), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William T Riker), Marina Sirtis (Counselor Deanna Troi) and Brent Spiner (Data).

But don’t expect Spiner to just play Data. According to the actor (via TrekMovie ), "Lore is in it in a very complicated way which I think you’ll find out ultimately when you watch the show. What else can I tell you? Really nothing because we were informed long ago - we signed these NDAs."

When talking about his return to the role, Burton said (via TrekMovike.com ) : "We're all done now and it was an absolute blast. It was so good to be together. I mean, we're all very, very close anyway. We try to get together once a year for Christmas, but during COVID we weren't able to do that, so being able to get together at the end of last year and the beginning of this year was really cool for us."

He went on to say that it was the perfect send-off for the Next Generation cast.

"We all thought the ship had sailed on a conscious goodbye," he shared. "When me made our last movie, Nemesis in 2002, we expected there to be another one, and then things changed. So this was a great gift to us.

"This season of Picard is a love poem to Next Generation and we get to see these people that we grew to know and even love at this new point in their lives."

Picard showrunner Terry Matalas celebrated the news in a joyous statement (via Deadline ). "I remember watching the premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation almost 34 years ago with my father like it was yesterday. It was the spark that ignited my love for science-fiction. So, it's most fitting that the story of Jean-Luc Picard ends honouring the beginning, with his dearest and most loyal friends from the USS Enterprise. It would be an understatement to say that giving these characters a proper send-off is an honour," he said.

"The entire Star Trek: Picard team and I can't wait for fans to experience this final, high-stakes, starship-bound adventure in season three!"

And let's not forget about this season's antagonist . Matalas teased that a major star is set to play the show's next villain, but he wasn't prepared to give fans any hint as to who it may be.

Replying to a fan on Twitter who asked whether the next villain will be a new character, the show boss replied: "It is a new character. Played by someone you've seen a million times before. Someone I've always wanted to work with. And… wow. You're not ready."

After ruling out Star Trek regular Jeffrey Combs, Matalas later confirmed that it will be someone completely new to the Trek universe – so start placing your bets on who it will be (and if you bet Amanda Plummer , you were right!)

Star Trek: Picard season 3 plot: What will happen?

Speaking to EW following the season two finale, Patrick Stewart hinted at how the Next Generation crew will return in season three:

"We will meet them, but it's not a reassembling at all. It's not just a reunion. Everybody has a function, and that's really all I'm allowed to say, because what's coming up in season three I think is very exciting. And, of course, a lot of it will involve the way that the characters we've known for so long have evolved."

More specific plot points remain elusive for now, although Stewart did tease that season three could be the most interesting of all.

"When I read for the first time the ending of season two, I do remember one of the things that I said was, 'Where the hell are we going to go from here?' Because it almost seemed that there was a conclusion," he said.

"I wondered for a moment, 'Oh dear, are we going to be wrapped early, and the show will disappear?' But we did not. And season three, in many respects, proved to me to be among the most interesting of episodes and moments that we had in the whole show."

But what does the future hold beyond that? Well, comments by Sir Patrick seemingly putting a full stop on the world past the final batch of episodes.

"I think that Picard has said his last sentence and given his last look at his colleagues," he told Variety. "I think the way we close season three is perfect. Perfect. It makes me emotional each time I think of it, but it's great."

Whatever happens, expect season three to feel cinematic.

"Terry Matalas was so in love - in the most beautiful way - with the idea of saying, 'I want to see that last Next Gen movie, that movie that I never got to see,'" showrunner Alex Kurtzman said (via TrekMovie ). "But let’s tell that story over 10 episodes and make it one big blowout. And he really delivered on that.

"Because the truth is, if we had sat down and said let’s do a Next Gen movie and you’ve got two hours to introduce all these characters, then everybody would have been shortchanged. There’s no way it would have worked. And so I think the fact that we got to do it over these 10 hours with this farewell, to me, it’s a love letter to what Picard was. It’s a love letter to all fans of Star Trek and to this to the legacy of this incredible show."

Star Trek: Picard season 3 trailer: When can we expect it?

First, we had a teaser - and it was a very good teaser (that you can watch above).

Just short of one and a half minutes, the brief trailer shows admiral Jean-Luc Picard receiving an SOS message before meeting up with his old pal Riker (Jonathan Frakes) in a bar, seeking his help.

Amazon Prime Video Limits Global Debut of ‘Star Trek: Picard’ Season 3

Amazon Prime Video is boldly going where no Star Trek series has gone before, by withholding the premiere of Star Trek: Picard Season 3 from its streaming service in some markets. 

The third season of the Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) sequel, starring Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Jean-Luc Picard, the once proud Captain of the starship USS Enterprise-D, debuted on February 16 on American streaming service Paramount+, and was reported to have meant to premiere on Amazon’s Prime Video service 24-hours later, as Paramount+ hasn’t been made available globally yet.

Instead, fans of the latest Star Trek series, which also reunites the cast and crew from the original TNG series, including Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker, Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi, Michael Dorn as Worf, Gates McFadden as Beverly Crusher, and Levar Burton as Geordi La Forge, have not been able to stream the new series on Prime Video.

Brent Spiner, who played the character of the android Data, up to the character’s death in Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) reprises his role as Data’s evil android twin brother, Lore, while TNG guest star Daniel Davis returns as Holodeck character, Professor Moriarty.

Both the first and second season of Star Trek: Picard , along with animated spin-off Star Trek: Lower Decks are streaming on Prime Video. While Paramount+ is the new home of new Star Trek shows, it is currently only available in select markets, including the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Latin America, the Caribbean, Australia, Italy, Ireland and South Korea. 

Not all of Paramount+’s original shows are also released on Prime Video, and this includes Yellowstone , a top-rated drama starring Kevin Costner. 

When contacted, representatives for Prime Video did not respond to queries as to why the final voyage of The Next Generation crew cannot be enjoyed by global fans of the sci-fi series.

Hsals needs more space in his house, and more money in his bank account to pay for all the toys, collectibles and other geek related items that companies are churning out. Free-time? Girlfriend? Who’s got time for those?

The orville season 4 seemingly confirmed by seth macfarlane after 2-year wait.

Creator and star Seth MacFarlane seemingly confirms that The Orville season 4 is happening, two years after season 3 premiered on Hulu.

Seth MacFarlane seemingly confirms The Orville season 4, two years after the show last premiered original episodes. A comedy-slanted take on Star Trek -style space adventures, MacFarlane’s sci-fi show premiered on Fox back in 2017, moving over to Hulu exclusively for season 3 in 2022. In early 2024, MacFarlane sparked hopes of The Orville season 4 happening, saying that he’s “ working on ” getting new episodes launched.

A few months after that promising update, MacFarlane has stoked further hopes that his cult favorite sci-fi show has not been permanently sent to spacedock, stating that The Orville is not yet over. " The Orville was a passion project, I say ‘was’ but I don’t really mean ‘was’ because there will be more ," the series creator said in an appearance on The Mike Henry Show (around 17:20 of the video clip below):

Why MacFarlane May Not Be Confirming Orville Season 4 (Yet)

MacFarlane states that The Orville “ is not yet over ,” but his new remarks are not an absolute confirmation that season 4 is on the way. It’s possible that the “ more ” MacFarlane has on tap will take the adventures of The Orville and its plucky crew outside the realm of series TV and into another medium. Indeed, the show creator has already spun off Orville content to book form, turning an unproduced season 3 episode into the novella The Orville: Sympathy for the Devil . The show has also been spunoff into a trio of Dark Horse Comics miniseries.

While it’s possible that MacFarlane has something in mind other than another season of the show, his new statement in conjunction with his January 2024 interview revelation that he’s “working on” The Orville should raise hopes that the series’ run has not yet come to an end. Even if The Orville season 4 isn’t presently in the works, MacFarlane’s love for the sci-fi series is obvious, and it’s likely he will keep creating content in his Star Trek -inspired universe, in every available medium, for as long as he can.

How MacFarlane's Ted Could Help The Orville Live On

MacFarlane has expanded his small screen presence with the Peacock show Ted , a miniseries prequel to his pair of Ted movies, following the exploits of a foul-mouthed sentient teddy bear, with MacFarlane himself voicing the titular toy. Ted has indeed been a surprise hit for Peacock, setting a viewership record for the streamer when it premiered, and re-invigorating a franchise that seemed like it had come to an end after 2015's movie Ted 2 .

Chances of Ted season 2 happening seem strong now that the first run of episodes has caught on with audiences while doing fairly well with critics, as reflected in the show's 72% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But the success of MacFarlane's new comedy streaming show may have a positive effect on the creator's on-hiatus series, boosting chances of The Orville season 4 finally getting underway. If Hulu doesn't wish to continue the adventures of The Orville , perhaps Peacock could pick up the show, and build upon the solid relationship they've already established with MacFarlane.

The Orville seasons 1-3 are available to watch on Hulu.

MacFarlane indeed has a lot of potential projects on his plate, to go along with Family Guy , which continues its long run with no end in sight. Ted season 2 might be front-and-center at Peacock, but The Orville remains a passion project for its creator, and season 4 is very much a possibility, assuming there is a streamer that wishes to give it a home.
