Production has begun on Star Trek: Section 31

The 14 th Star Trek film has now begun production, as Paramount+ announced the start of production for Star Trek: Section 31 , along with cast members and a top-level plot summary.

“And we’re off to the races! Thrilled to report principal photography has started on  STAR TREK: SECTION 31 ,” said executive producer Alex Kurtzman via press release. “We welcome our incredible cast of new characters as they join our beloved Michelle Yeoh on her next wild adventure across the ‘Trek’ universe.”

Star Trek: Section 31 cast

We previously knew Michelle Yeoh , who has garnered quite a bit of star power since her Star Trek: Discovery debut back in 2017 with films like Everything Everywhere All at Once and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings , would reprise her role as Philippa Georgiou. Now we know Omari Hardwick ( Power ), Kacey Rohl ( Hannibal ), Emmy winner Sam Richardson ( Ted Lasso ), Sven Ruygrok ( One Piece ), Robert Kazinsky ( Pacific Rim ), Humberly Gonzalez ( Ginny & Georgia ) and James Hiroyuki Liao ( Barry ) will fill out the call sheet.

Star Trek: Section 31 cast

Official description

The film’s official and somewhat vague description states:

“Tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, [Georgiou] also must face the sins of her past.”

Section 31 is the name of the shadowy Federation-aligned security organization first introduced in Deep Space Nine and seen regularly in other Star Trek media ever since, including 2013’s Star Trek: Into Darkness.

Section 31 has familiar names behind the camera, as veteran Discovery director Olatunde Osunsanmi will direct and executive produce. Craig Sweeny , a consulting producer for Discovery , will write and executive produce.

No release date has been announced.

If you’re itching for more Section 31, check out the Star Trek: Discovery tie-in novel Die Standing , a great read focusing on Georgiou and her enrollment in the secret organization.

Spoilers ahead

Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek : Section 31 will be fronted by her Most Imperial Majesty, Mother of the Fatherland, Overlord of Vulcan, Dominus of Qo’noS, Regina Andor… But you know her best as Philippa Georgiou.

Currently in development, the latest series in Paramount Plus ’s rapidly expanding fleet of Trek TV shows promises to give the brilliant Michelle Yeoh top billing as Georgiou. Having established herself as one of the standout players as Star Trek: Discovery mapped out the new frontier of the 32nd century, the former totalitarian ruler of the Mirror Universe’s Terran Empire will be back in more familiar territory in this spin-off. She’ll be returning to the ranks of Section 31, the morally questionable intelligence agency that operates in the shadows of the Federation.

With Star Trek: Section 31 still waiting for a greenlight (and an official title), plot specifics are currently under wraps, but there’s still plenty of information out there about a series destined to become the 12th Star Trek TV show.

Here’s everything you need to know about The Further Adventures of Philippa Georgiou, aka Star Trek: Section 31 – on a need-to-know basis, obviously…

  • What we know about Picard season 2

Star Trek: Section 31 release date: when will the show get an official stardate?

While Star Trek: Discovery season 4, Picard season 2 and Strange New Worlds are already in production, Section 31’s exact status is more of a mystery – who knows, maybe that’s appropriate for an organization that deals primarily in secrets.

In December 2020, Michelle Yeoh told TV Insider that, “I know the EPs [executive producers] and writers and my team are still working very hard because we have a lot more stories to tell. I hope it will be very soon.”

A Star Trek: Section 31 release date may not be quite as soon as she hoped, however.

When asked by Hollywood Reporter in April 2021 whether Section 31 was still on the Federation agenda, Akiva Goldsman (a co-showrunner on Picard and Strange New Worlds) said, “I don't know. I believe so.” He added that, "Alex has a plan,” referring to Alex Kurtzman, the executive producer charged with overseeing the TV branch of the Trek franchise.

Meanwhile, Shazad Latif – who played Ash Tyler in the first two seasons of Discovery, and is likely to be one of the stars of Star Trek: Section 31 – has said that, “It’s just been slight yeses, slight questions, but I've no idea. I think it's down to people's schedules.”

Hardly words that suggest production on the new show is imminent.

In fact, we may be talking years rather than months. That’s because Section 31 is part of streaming service Paramount Plus’s grand, overarching strategy for the TV future of the franchise – and the new show is effectively waiting for an empty slot to appear on the roster.

“We’re very careful about curating the pacing – the number of shows at any given time – and what those shows are, so that we make sure that it’s always exciting when there’s a new show coming out,” Paramount Plus programming boss Julie McNamara told Variety in February. She added that the service is looking to debut “a new Trek [show] a quarter”, and that “conversations” about Section 31 are still happening.

This suggests that Paramount Plus won’t be looking to expand on the current Trek slate of Discovery, Picard, animated comedy Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds and upcoming kids’ cartoon Star Trek: Prodigy until one of the existing shows runs its course. It therefore seems likely the Star Trek: Section 31 release date is still a long way down the line – our most optimistic guess is mid-to-late 2022, though it could be as far away as 2023 or beyond.

That said, McNamara did hint that nobody at Paramount is expecting Star Trek: Picard to go on forever: “Perhaps an older lead is only committed to a certain number of seasons and therefore we move on from that,” she teased. If Picard runs its course in, say, three seasons, the turbolift doors would open for Section 31 much sooner.

Expect to watch Star Trek: Section 31 on Paramount Plus in the US. With other Trek shows spread across Netflix and Amazon Prime Video internationally, it’s still unknown where the new show will materialize in other star systems and territories.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? A Star Trek: Discovery spin-off featuring Philippa Georgiou, former Emperor of the Terran Empire, that doesn't technically have a title yet. It's informally referred to as Section 31, however.
  • Where can I watch it? Like all of the Star Trek shows, it’ll almost definitely be available on Paramount Plus (formerly CBS All Access) in the US. Broadcasters in other territories are TBC.
  • When can I watch it? With production yet to get underway, that’s still classified.

What is Section 31?

Section 31 is an undercover intelligence organisation in the Star Trek universe.

Although the United Federation of Planets traditionally portrays itself as a benign, utopian society, there are darker forces operating behind the scenes. Formed under ‘Article 14, Section 31’ of the Starfleet charter, Section 31 was permitted to carry use “extraordinary measures” in the name of protecting the Federation’s lofty ideals. In other words, morally dubious behaviour comes as standard.

Section 31 made its first screen appearance in Deep Space Nine season 6 episode ‘Inquisition’, when Agent Luther Sloan arrived on the station, suspecting one of the crew of being a Dominion spy.

It’s since been revealed that Section 31 had been in operation for years, all the way back to the early days of Starfleet. In the pre-Kirk and Spock Star Trek: Enterprise, security officer Lt Malcolm Tucker turned out to be a Section 31 agent, while it was Section 31 who recruited John Harrison (aka Khan) to help beef up Starfleet’s defenses in the alternative ‘Kelvin’ timeline of Star Trek into Darkness.

The agency was also a major antagonist in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, when they investigated Spock’s escape from a psychiatric hospital, and accused him of murdering three doctors. In fact, Section 31 was so persistent that the USS Discovery had to go rogue from Starfleet to protect Spock from their clutches.

It later turned out that Section 31 was operating under directions from Control, the Federation’s Skynet-like AI that would ultimately prove a threat to all life in the galaxy – until Discovery carried the vital ‘Sphere Data’ into the future.

  • What we know about Star Trek: Discovery season 4

Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Section 31 cast: who will star in the Discovery spin-off?

Star Trek: Discovery

The new show will be built around Philippa Georgiou (played by Tomorrow Never Dies/Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star Michelle Yeoh), the former Emperor of the Terran Empire who crossed universes to join the Discovery crew – and became the most memorable, most quotable character on board the ship.

“The truth is that for Section 31 the idea of doing that show, it was Michelle Yeoh’s,” Star Trek overseer Alex Kurtzman said in a 2020 Variety Screening Room Q&A (via TrekMovie ). “She deserves all the credit for that. She actually came to me about it before we even aired the first season of Discovery. She loved playing the character and she said, ‘I know that there are a lot of young women who grew up like I did and did not see somebody like me on screen and I want to be that person.’ And I said, ‘That sounds amazing! Let’s do it.’

“But we didn’t know if people were going to like Discovery, so I said, ‘Let’s see how it works, and if we can get there let’s get there.’ She killed it. She did amazing work on the show. And then in season 2, we really started digging into the mythology of Section 31, which had been dealt with on other shows. And we started seeing a way to do it. And so we got there.”

Yeoh’s played two versions of Philippa Georgiou in Discovery. The first was the respected captain of Starfleet’s USS Shenzhou, Michael Burnham’s mentor who died at the ‘Battle at the Binary Stars’ that kickstarted a Federation/Klingon war.

We met her doppelganger when Discovery’s spore drive accidentally carried the ship into the Mirror Universe we’d previously visited in the original Star Trek, Deep Space Nine and Enterprise. Here Georgiou was the Emperor of the totalitarian Terran Empire, an organization where any sign of weakness is punishable by death.

After the Discovery crew took down her flagship, the ISS Charon, Georgiou offered to sacrifice herself to aid Burnham’s escape – the pair share a bond across universes – but Burnham opted to take her back to her ship.

Once the Mirror Georgiou was resident in the Prime Universe, Section 31 wanted to capitalize on her moral flexibility and unique set of skills, so recruited her to their ranks. This brought her back into Discovery’s orbit, but she ultimately turned on her Section 31 masters when Control took, well, control. She remained on board Discovery when it travelled to the distant future of the 32nd century.

This left many Trek fans wondering how Georgiou could possibly appear in the Star Trek: Section 31 spin-off, but luckily the Discovery showrunners had a plan. As Georgiou’s body started to be torn apart in the future, phasing in and out of reality, future-Starfleet intelligence guy Kovich explained that the fact her molecules had crossed universes and travelled centuries through time had made her body inherently unstable. Unlikely salvation came in the form of Original Series portal/plot device the Guardian of Forever (from classic episode ‘The City on the Edge of Forever’), who offered her a chance to travel closer to the time she came from…

Beyond Yeoh, casting is TBC, though we wouldn’t be surprised to see a return for Shazad Latif as Ash Tyler. The Klingon/human hybrid was in charge of Section 31 when Discovery blasted off to the future – he’s also one of the few people aware of the ship’s true fate – so it’s logical that he’d be Georgiou’s first point of contact. Assuming, of course, the Guardian of Forever sent her back to her original time.

Star Trek: Section 31 plot: what will the new show be about?

Star Trek Discovery

That’s the big question, because aside from the fact it’ll feature Georgiou and involve Section 31, the new show is something of an open book.

We do know it'll be different to any Trek we've seen before. “We’re aiming to have our shows feel unique and different from each other,” Kurtzman told Variety. “We want to give everybody a reason to watch each show.”

He also added that, while there'll be an “interconnectedness” between each Trek series, you won't have to watch everything to keep up as you do with the Marvel Cinematic Universe: “Our goal is not to make it so insular that if you haven't seen the show you're lost when you watch another show.”

It seems most likely the Guardian of Forever sent Georgiou back to a time just after she and the Discovery crew travelled to the 32nd century. With Section 31 decimated by all those issues with Control, rebuilding will almost certainly be at the top of the agenda – and who better to help Tyler than Georgiou?

“I hope in the short time she was [in the future], being the amazing engineer and smart cookie she is, she would’ve learned a lot about that time period that she would be able to take with her,” Yeoh told TV Insider. “Can you imagine what she could bring back to the past? Without changing the future, of course. Developments that could make a huge difference, and if it was Section 31, that’s what Section 31 is all about, isn’t it?”

In fact, her resumé is going to be attractive to any 23rd century HR department. Not only does she have experience of the future and managing an interstellar empire, her time on board Discovery has softened some of her more psychotic edges.

“She’s definitely had a change of heart,” Yeoh explained in an interview with Bustle . “She had an awakening in the sense that she realized yes, you could rule with fear and tyranny, but only for a short period. This was what she learned from being in the Prime Universe. It’s about compassion, about hope. It’s about when people have nothing to lose, then they don’t care anymore. And when you don’t care, you don’t have a future.”

There may also be some rebuilding to do in the Mirror Universe, so don’t rule out the prospect of Georgiou finding a way back to her original home. Indeed, after Kovich revealed that the Terran Empire had collapsed long before the 32nd century, she may see this as an opportunity to reshape it in her own image.

“The Terran empire disappeared 500 years ago,” Yeoh said in TV Insider. “There were no more crossings, we were never heard from again, and the only thing you can come away with that is that we destroyed ourselves. I think she realized that when she went back to Michael Burnham and she said, ‘How many more times are people going to revolt against us? If we don’t give the people some kind of peace and harmony, we are just going to kill ourselves.’ She learned that just by killing, that was not the answer or the way to rule moving forward.”

More than five years after a Section 31-set Star Trek: Discovery spinoff series was officially put into development , production is now actually underway on what will now be a Michelle Yeoh -led movie .

Paramount+ on Tuesday announced that production has begun in Toronto on Star Trek: Section 31 , a “movie event” starring Academy Award winner Yeoh in the role of Emperor Philippa Georgiou.

Yeoh played  USS Shenzhou  captain Georgiou in Season 1 of Paramount+’s  Star Trek: Discovery , but was killed off early on. She returned later that season as a ruthless mirror-universe counterpart, Emperor Georgiou, who wound up involved in Starfleet’s Section 31 — a covert element that was first introduced in the  Deep Space Nine  TV series, and played a role throughout  Discovery  Season 2.

“And we’re off to the races! Thrilled to report principal photography has started on Star Trek: Section 31 ,” executive producer Alex Kurtzman said in a statement. “We welcome our incredible cast of new characters as they join our beloved Michelle Yeoh on her next wild adventure across the Trek universe.”

Written by Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, Star Trek: Section 31 is executive produced by Kurtzman, Yeoh, Sweeny, Osunsanmi, Aaron Baiers, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth.

Here is everything (everywhere, all at once?) that we know about Star Trek: Section 31 ….

What Is Star Trek: Section 31 About?

Star Trek Discovery Season 1 Finale Georgiou

In the Star Trek: Section 31 movie, Michelle Yeoh will reprise her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou – a character she played in Season 1 of Paramount+’s Star Trek: Discovery — who joins the titular secret division of Starfleet. While tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, Georgiou also will have to face the sins of her past.

What Is the Titular 'Section 31'?

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Inquisition

Section 31, a clandestine arm of the United Federation of Planets that takes its name from Article 14, Section 31 of the 200-year-old Starfleet Charter, was first introduced in the Season 6 Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “Inquisition.”

In that episode, DS9 station was visited by Luther Sloan (guest star William Sadler), an agent from (so he claimed) Starfleet Internal Affairs who suspected that Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) was a Dominion spy.

But by episode’s end, Sloan admitted that he in fact worked for Section 31, “another branch of Starfleet Intelligence” that maintains “a low profile” as it seeks out and identifies potential dangers to the Federation. And when it finds one? “We deal with them. Quietly,” Sloan explained.

When Dr. Bashir contended that the “autonomous” Section 31 was acting as “judge, jury and executioner,” Sloan nodded, “It takes exception people to do what we do — people who can sublimate their ambitions to the best interests of the Federation.”

More recently, in Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, Michelle Yeoh ‘s Philippa Georgiou, Empress of the Mirror Universe’s Terran Empire, was an agent of Section 31 who in turn recruited Ash Tyler (played by Shazad Latif).

Who Has Been Cast in the Star Trek: Section 31 Movie?

Star Trek Section 31 Cast

Though no character details have been revealed as of yet, the full cast for Star Trek: Section 31 , in addition to Michelle Yeoh , boasts Omari Hardwick ( Power ), Kacey Rohl ( Hannibal ), Emmy winner Sam Richardson ( Ted Lasso , Veep ), Sven Ruygrok ( One Piece ), Robert Kazinsky ( EastEnders ), Humberly Gonzalez ( Ginny & Georgia ) and James Hiroyuki Liao ( Barry ).

Who Will NOT Be Returning for the Section 31 Movie?

Shazad Latif not returning Ash Tyler

Set phasers for, “We’re a bit stunned!”

Though Ash Tyler was placed in command of Section 31 (well, in at least  some  timeline) in  Star Trek: Discovery ‘s Season 2 finale, a CBS Studios rep confirmed for TVLine that Shazad Latif will  not  appear in the Section 31 movie .

Latif next can be seen playing Captain Nemo in the Disney+-turned-AMC series Nautilus , due out this year.

Why Is Section 31 a Movie and Not a TV Series?

Star Trek Discovery Episode 13 Georgiou Michelle Yeoh

It was five years ago (Jan. 14, 2018) when Star Trek: Discovery ‘s Section 31 offshoot was first put into development.

Since then, Michelle Yeoh went on to book/film roles in Marvel’s  Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings … the Academy Award-winning  Everything Everywhere All at Once … Netflix’s  The School for Good and Evil and  The Witcher: Blood Origin … Disney+’s  American Born Chinese … and Netflix’s The Brothers Sun .

Despite Yeoh’s status as a increasingly red-hot commodity, Tanya Giles, chief programming officer of Paramount Streaming, assured TVLine in January 2023 that a  Section 31 project was “still in development. “

And it was — though come April 2023, it was announced that the spinoff series would now arrive in the form of a “ special original movie event .”

Does Star Trek: Section 31 Have a Release Date?

Star Trek Section 31 Movie Cast Release Date

Production on the Star Trek: Section 31 movie only got underway on Jan. 30, in Toronto, and a release timetable has not yet been set.

But eventually, Star Trek: Section 31 will be available to stream on Paramount+ in the U.S. (and in all international markets where the service is available).

All this star power and it’s still a movie on a subject most fans are not interested in (Section 31) due to how “un-Star Trek” it is. It doesn’t engage with any of those qualities which make for the core appeal of the franchise. . Couldn’t they scrap this and order three more episodes of Strange New Worlds season 3 instead? Ten episode seasons are not enough.

I love section 31 and love this idea I wish this was a 10 episode series.

Have you done some sort of survey where you know what “most fans” are interested in?

And how would fans do another movie. I would like to hear a fan’s pitch on how they would do another “Star Trek” film.

Yeah, just go to any Star Trek fan message board and see for yourself. Literally just pick one. /shrug

News flash: The people who hang out on Trek message boards may be loud, but they do not represent “most fans.”

Section 31 was a great concept on DS9, because it was handled in a way that left a lot of mystery and confusion as to how real the organization was. Enterprise pushed that idea beyond where it should have gone, but everything they’ve done with Section 31 since the JJ Abrams movies has just highlighted how much the current Trek runners don’t get not just the Section 31 concept, but the franchise as a whole. This movie is a bad idea, born out of a bad idea, born out of a bad idea. Why can’t they just hire people who actually like Star Trek to run these things?

I don’t understand where this falls in the timeline. Especially we never learned what happened to her when she entered the Gateway. I mean, presumably she returned to the past, but will this be addressed? Or will it take place before the Discovery crew were left stranded in the future?

I wouldn’t be surprised if they bookend the story with Georgiou in a past before the prime and mirror universes diverged, but the main plot has to take place prior to Discovery’s jump into the future because that’s when she was recruited to and active in Section 31.

That has to be the case. Or she returns to S31 upon her return. It’s not like she can tell anyone what happened, they’ve effectively been erased from existence. On paper anyway.

This needs to be in theaters!

All of these names but still nothing said about Shazad Latif returning or not as Ash Tyler?

“Want scoop on Star Trek: Section 31, or for any other TV show? Email [email protected] , and your question may be answered via Matt’s Inside Line!”

This should be in theaters, not on a streaming service. There is an audience for this & it would make solid money simply because its Star Trek. Putting it on a streaming service would devalue the movie greatly in my opinion. Money is being left on the table here. Why? It will make zero dollars. It’s a shame.

I am unable to help you.

There’s no money in this. Modern Trek has it’s fans, but it has also alienated a large percent of Star Trek fans, to the point where they’re basically two different fandoms now. Merchandise for new Trek shows doesn’t come close to classic Trek. Of the new Trek shows, Discovery is probably the least liked, and this is a spinoff, featuring a character that isn’t even universally loved by Discovery’s already-smaller audience. Any hope of Star Trek being a box office success was killed by Abrams, and its corpse was mutilated by Kurtzman. Picard S3 was the closest they’ve come to pleasing the Trekkie core fandom, and they’re not even trying to hold onto that success. If you love Disco and are excited for this movie, I’m happy that you’ll get to see it at all… but it is something for an incredibly niche audience at this point.

If you recall the upcoming “Roadhouse” remake has gotten a lot of extra attention because of director Doug Limon blasting the studio’s decision to banish the movie to streaming only. The director felt that this was his best film & that it was worthy of being put in theaters on the big screen since it tested higher than his other movies which, include the first “Bourne” film & the Tim Cruise action classic “Edge of Tomorrow” as well as “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” Obviously, the studio didn’t see it that way. But it signifies the importance of movie theaters & why they are so important to the long-term health of the movie industry. And movie theaters need the buisness.right now. And if they are willing to treat tentpole franchises like “Star Trek” this way, there may not be a movie industry anymore, at least not how we recognize it.

You can’t save the moviegoing experience by putting out products that people don’t want to see. We’ve learned that lesson a lot in recent years. Star Trek could do well with it’s fans in theaters, but not with what Trek is currently putting out. Trek fandom is not mainstream, and never was. Don’t even try for a billion dollars. Make a cheaper movie, targeted at a very specific audience. But the modern Trek producers haven’t been pursuing Trek fans for a very long time.

Let me ask you a question. Can you pitch me your idea of what a good “Star Trek” movie is? How would you do it? What would it be about?

1. Respect the history of Star Trek. The way it was written, the way it looked, all of it. This is a big playground to play in. It shouldn’t be hard. Just respect what came before. 2. Write a movie that has a thoughtful plot, and isn’t just a generic action movie. 3. Create interesting characters and hire talented actors. (And forbid those actors from badmouthing Star Trek and its fans) 4. If you’re going to go political, explore the ideas from different angles, in interesting ways. Do. Not. Preach. I actually do have specific ideas, but since I’m a writer, I will probably repurpose some of those ideas at some point, so I won’t get specific here.

It was more of a rhetorical proclamation of not believing he wasn’t listed with so many announced, not an actual question where I expected an answer. I’m sure you’ll provide scoop when there is some. I’m also aware it might be a timeline issue but I can still hope we get at least a small cameo.

And now I see the question was used and answered anyway :p Thanks…too bad he won’t be in it; will still cross fingers they figure out a cameo or something.

Section 31 seems to be the only thing Paramount cares for out of DS9.

Oh, I dunno. There was that whole DS9-centered episode of Lower Decks.

I prefer live action.

A cameo from Dr. Bashir would make this worth watching.

That would have been cool.

The cast is not interesting at all.

Robert Kazinsky really Paramount?? Clearly someone needs to let them be aware of the sexual harassment allegation he was found guilty of. Is that the kind of people they want to support???

Put William Shatner in this or I ain’t watching!

First look at Michelle Yeoh on the set of Star Trek: Section 31

Seven New Cast Members Join Michelle Yeoh in ‘Star Trek: Section 31’

Image of Rachel Ulatowski

After years of persistent questions from fans, Star Trek: Section 31 is officially coming to Paramount+. The long-awaited spinoff has finally begun production and added several new cast members.

Rumors of Star Trek: Section 31 first arose in 2018, just a year after Star Trek: Discovery pre miered . CBS reportedly began talks with Michelle Yeoh to give her character, Philippa Georgiou, a solo spinoff series. Yeoh received high praise for her role as Georgiou, who was introduced as a Captain of the USS Shenzhou in season 1. After being killed, she returned as another iteration of Georgiou from the Mirror Universe, where she was the emperor of the authoritarian Terran Empire.

She was officially written off Star Trek: Discovery in season 3 in 2020 to pave the way for her spinoff series. Unfortunately, this is when progress on the series started to lag. First, the COVID-19 pandemic caused filming delays, then CBS All Access rebranded to Paramount+ and made the streamer Star Trek ‘s home. With the streamer continuing Star Trek: Discovery and debuting four more shows— Star Trek: Picard , Star Trek: Prodigy , Star Trek: Lower Decks , and Star Trek: Brave New Worlds —creator Alex Kurtzman warned that Star Trek: Section 31 wouldn’t be officially added to Paramount+’s slate until one of the aforementioned shows concluded.

Fortunately, Kurtzman kept his promise: Right before the series finale of Star Trek: Picard , Star Trek: Section 31 was officially ordered by Paramount+. However, the project is no longer being developed as a TV series but as a streaming film directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. Here’s everything we know about the Star Trek: Section 31 film.

Star Trek: Section 31 reveals its cast as production commences

Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Section 31 confirmed the return of Yeoh, who will be reprising her role as Georgiou. Even though the project is being redeveloped, it will still star Yeoh as was initially planned. After all, the entire project started with Yeoh when she approached CBS about giving Georgiou a spinoff. The role had grown close to her heart and was quite significant, as she was one of the first women to ring in a new era of Star Trek. On reprising her role as Georgiou, Yeoh stated :

“I’m beyond thrilled to return to my Star Trek family and to the role I’ve loved for so long. Section 31 has been near and dear to my heart since I began the journey of playing Philippa all the way back when this new golden age of Star Trek launched. To see her finally get her moment is a dream come true in a year that’s shown me the incredible power of never giving up on your dreams. We can’t wait to share what’s in store for you, and until then: live long and prosper (unless Emperor Georgiou decrees otherwise)!”

As reported by Variety , Star Trek: Section 31 has also confirmed seven more cast members, although their roles have not been disclosed. Joining Yeoh for the film are Sam Richardson ( Ted Lasso ), Kacey Rohl ( Hannibal ), Omari Hardwick ( Army of the Dead ), Robert Kazinsky ( Pacific Rim ), Humberly González ( Ginny & Georgia ), James Hiroyuki Liao ( Prison Break ), and Sven Ruygrok ( Spud ). So far, these are the only confirmed cast. However, there’s a chance some Star Trek: Discovery cast members could return. For example, Shazad Latif’s Ash Tyler was made Commander of Section 31 in Star Trek: Discovery , paving the way for his potential return. It remains to be seen if he will reprise his role for the film, though, and if any other familiar faces will join Yeoh.

In addition to the film forming its cast, Kurtzman confirmed that principal photography has begun, meaning Star Trek: Section 31 will likely have a 2025 release date.

What is Star Trek: Section 31 about?

A Star Trek 31 badge

As revealed by The Hollywood Reporter , the synopsis for Star Trek: Section 31 reads, “[Georgiou] joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past.” As mentioned above, Georgiou was once the ruthless emperor of an authoritarian dictatorship, which explains the “sins” she is facing. However, we’re not so sure if joining Section 31 is the path to redemption.

After all, Section 31 has a fairly dark history in the Star Trek franchise. Section 31 was a secretive organization that claimed to protect the security of Starfleet and the Federation. While considered a part of Starfleet Intelligence, Section 31 largely operates in the shadows, outside of the Federation’s jurisdiction. This means the few individuals who made up Section 31 could largely use their own discretion to deal with threats without being held accountable for more extreme measures. Hence, Section 31 isn’t necessarily an “evil” organization but one with questionable morals. At times, the group concluded that such despicable actions as murder and even genocide were justified to deal with a threat. Despite being extreme at times, many of its members did believe they were working in the best interest of the Federation and doing what had to be done.

Considering Georgiou already has a pretty morally ambiguous past, it’s a little concerning to see what she’ll do in the name of the Federation’s security under the protection of Section 31’s secrecy.

Star Trek: Section 31 - Release Window, Cast, And More Info

Section 31

As seen in the photo above, filming has begun on "Star Trek: Section 31," a TV movie starring Michelle Yeoh as Empress Philippa Georgiou, the "evil" counterpart to the deceased Captain Philippa Georgiou. Yeoh's character appeared in multiple episodes of "Star Trek: Discovery," and exited the series when she was recruited into Section 31, the "Star Trek" equivalent of the CIA. Section 31, outfitted with badass black badges, engaged in shady dealings on Starfleet's behalf, subverting the organization's ideals when violence was needed.

A "Section 31" TV series was rumored to be in production as early as 2017 when Trekkies noticed that the call numbers of the U.S.S. Discovery were NCC-1031. An official Yeoh-starring series was announced in 2018  and several episodes were written. Eventually, though, the series was developed into a single televised movie event .

Yeoh's character, hailing from the infamous Mirror Universe, has already murdered untold thousands of people, committed acts of cannibalism, and threatened to take over the galaxy. Although she eventually went through something approaching a redemption arc, Empress Georgiou clearly has the loose moral code required to work in the already morally dubious Section 31. It remains strange, though, that Starfleet would essentially be responsible for creating outright villains.

Executive producer Alex Kurtzman announced on the Paramount press site: "And we're off to the races! Thrilled to report principal photography has started on 'Star Trek: Section 31.' We welcome our incredible cast of new characters as they join our beloved Michelle Yeoh on her next wild adventure across the 'Trek' universe."

Here's some more information about the film.

When does 'Star Trek: Section 31' premiere and who will star?

No official release date has yet been announced, sadly. The Paramount press release merely confirmed that "Section 31" will only be available on Paramount+ in the United States and in all the other territories where Paramount+ is available (currently: Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, throughout Latin America, the Middle East, Scandinavia, as well as the United Kingdom, and Ireland). There's a chance we'll see it this year, but not until later in 2024 at the earliest.

Paramount announced the other cast members of "Section 31," including Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl, Sam Richardson, Sven Ruygrok, Robert Kazinsky, Humberly Gonzalez, and James Hiroyuki Liao. None of these actors have appeared in "Star Trek" before, so "Section 31" may stand as a rare phenomenon in modern "Star Trek" in that it is (potentially) not a legacy series. All the other Trek series made since 2017 have featured direct connections to established Trek lore. The "Discovery" character Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) for instance, is Spock's long-lost adoptive sister, and Spock appeared in the second season of "Discovery." "Lower Decks" is lousy with references, "Prodigy" features Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), and both "Picard" and "Strange New Worlds" star familiar faces exclusively.

It remains to be seen if any of the above cast members will play a relative of a known Trek character, however. Section 31, meanwhile, was first mentioned in later seasons of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," and has appeared in "Star Trek: Enterprise" and "Star Trek: Lower Decks." Multiple storylines throughout the franchise have been devoted to the organization's untrustworthiness.

"Section 31" will be written by Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. Because modern Trek requires armies of producers, the credited production team includes Kurtzman, Sweeny, Aaron Baiers, Osunsanmi, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, and Yeoh.

What are the plot details of 'Star Trek: Section 31?'

The logline for 'Star Trek: Section 31' was a little vague, saying only that "Emperor Philippa Georgiou ... joins a secret division of Starfleet," and that she is "tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past."

It seems that while Yeoh is delicious as a cannibalistic villainess, "Section 31" will pointedly hope to redeem her. In "Star Trek: Discovery," Philippa Georgiou was hijacked from her home dimension and forced to live in the more righteous one. An encounter with the Guardian of Forever in "Discovery" started her on her path of self-reflection, making her realize that she may actually possess the capacity for forgiveness and virtue. Having fled her home dimension, however, one might posit that she's outrun the statute of limitations on her dictatorial crimes; all her victims are in a parallel universe now, and many of them are still alive in the "main" "Star Trek" timeline. This, of course, brings up an interesting quandary: are you still morally corrupt if your crimes have been erased from existence?

As of this writing, no official trailers have been released.

/Film will report on "Section 31" as more details become available. This will be the second TV movie in "Star Trek" history, provided one counts the two-hour episode of "Star Trek: Voyager" called "Dark Frontier" (February 17, 1999). "Dark Frontier," after its debut, subsequently aired as two episodes.

Star Trek: Section 31 - Everything You Need To Know

Michelle Yeoh wearing emperor's clothes

Since hitting the streaming realm in 2017, "Star Trek: Discovery" has been one of the best of the various incarnations in the greater Trek-verse. It's also become one of the more gloriously diverse editions of the "Star Trek" franchise, with creators populating the USS Discovery with a crew befitting a narrative that has always purported to explore brave new worlds. And just like its predecessors, the series has indeed boldly gone where no prior iteration — streaming or otherwise — has gone before.

It seems the journey begun in "Star Trek: Discovery" will push that exploration even further when the series' first spin-off finally makes its way to the Paramount+ platform. That project will be a Paramount+ original movie with the working title "Star Trek: Section 31," and it's set to expand on one of the most thrilling storylines from the first three seasons of "Star Trek: Discovery."

Here's everything new and returning fans need to know about "Star Trek: Section 31."

What is Star Trek: Section 31 about?

If you've been watching "Star Trek: Discovery" since its early days, the name Section 31 no doubt rings a few particular bells. And you might also know a Section 31 spin-off project has been in the works at Paramount+ for a few years. That fact was initially reported by  Entertainment Weekly  in 2019, and it's only fitting that the outlet was among the first to note  that the project is now finally happening .

As EW notes, it appears that "Star Trek: Section 31" will now hit Paramount+ as a single, feature-length movie instead of the series its creators initially envisioned. It will still detail the inner workings of the titular Starfleet sect, which are basically like the Central Intelligence Agency for the Federation of Planets. To the delight of "Star Trek" fans, the movie will be centered on the "Discovery" character who essentially introduced the clandestine agency to the Trek-loving masses.

That character is Emperor Philippa Georgiou, and the series will follow the woman as she joins the secret Starfleet agency, doing so as she attempts to address her past transgressions. And as "Discovery" fans know, that will be no minor feat.

Who will appear in Star Trek: Section 31?

As thrilled as "Star Trek: Discovery" fans will be by the return of Emperor Phillipa Georgiou, they'll be even more over the moon to learn the character will be played by the actor who portrayed her on the series, Michelle Yeoh . The "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" star was a major get for "Discovery" when she joined the series in its first season, but it's safe to say that's even more true these days. Yeoh is, of course, coming off a career year thanks to the runaway success of her film "Everything Everywhere All At Once," for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress.

As it is, that big win, and the career boon that will surely follow, may help explain why "Star Trek: Section 31" has transitioned from a time-consuming series to a standalone movie. Whatever the case, it'll be great to see Yeoh back in Trek mode, as her character was a fan-favorite over the first three seasons of "Discovery."

Phillipa Georgiou was actually two characters as it were, with Yeoh playing both the Prime dimension version of the character and her mirror dimension counterpart. Given the fate of the Prime iteration, Yeoh will understandably return as the mirror-verse version. And it should be fascinating to watch that character's "Section 31" journey. For now, Yeoh is the only confirmed cast member of "Star Trek: Section 31."

Who will write and direct Star Trek: Section 31

As  Entertainment Weekly  reported, the telling of Emperor Phillipa Georgiou's story in "Star Trek: Section 31" will be in capable hands, with Craig Sweeny serving as the film's writer and Olatunde Osunsanmi on board to direct. Both writer and director are alums of "Star Trek: Discovery," so they're familiar with the world in which "Section 31" is set.

As for Sweeny, "Discovery" was hardly his first rodeo in Hollywood, with the scribe also earning credits on hit series like "The 4400," "Medium," "Elementary," and "Limitless." And Osunsanmi has been working as an executive producer on "Discovery" since its inception, helming 12 episodes of the series himself — including several fronting Michelle Yeoh's characters. In addition, Osunsanmi has also directed episodes of "Under the Dome," "Falling Skies," "Gotham," "Colony," and "Bates Motel," just in case you were questioning his genre cred. That sort of behind-the-scenes talent should get fans excited to see what they do with "Star Trek: Section 31."

When will Star Trek: Section 31 be released?

Unfortunately, no official date has been set for the movie's streaming release. The good news is that fans will likely not have to wait that long to get eyes on it. According to Entertainment Weekly , "Star Trek: Section 31" is set to start shooting later this year. And that means the film may be lining up to hit Paramount+ sometime in 2024.

That is pure speculation, of course, with much relying on "Section 31" not hitting any production snags along the way. But given the Twitter reactions from some fans, people are pretty excited about Yeoh's return to the franchise. That includes user @nancywyuen , who celebrated the news with the post, "Best news of the day: Michelle Yeoh headlining a #StarTrek movie." They were not alone in their excitement, with  @wenbbilliams replying to the news with "In other news I'm now a 'Star Trek' fan," and @OkDoomsday summing up the general feeling of fandom by stating, "Michelle Yeoh was by far the best thing about 'Discovery.' Looking forward to this."

Thus begins the wait to see Michelle Yeoh back in action in "Star Trek: Section 31."

Every Known Member Of Star Trek's Section 31

Star trek: section 31 is still shrouded in mystery, lots of questions surround emperor georgiou's next adventure.

Star Trek: Section 31 's logline that Emperor Philippa Georgiou "joins a secret division of Starfleet" and is "charged with protecting the Federation" while also facing "the sins of her past" still leaves numerous crucial questions unanswered. First is when in the Star Trek timeline Section 31 takes place after a dying Georgiou was sent away from Star Trek: Discovery' s 32nd century by the Guardian of Forever (Paul Guilfoyle) to save her life. Further, Georgiou was already a member of Section 31 in the 23rd century, and the Guardian of Forever also sent Phillipa back to the Mirror Universe to evaluate if she'd truly changed in Star Trek: Discovery season 3. How Section 31 will deepen Georgiou's story remains to be seen.

Star Trek: Section 31 is potentially the first of a new line of made-for-Paramount+ Star Trek movies planned to be released every 2 years.

While it's unknown who the 7 new actors joining the cast of Star Trek: Section 31 are playing, Georgiou potentially being surrounded by only new characters could be disappointing to fans. Section 31 has a sordid cast of characters who have been part of the black ops organization throughout Star Tre k's different eras. However, Alex Kurtzman calling Section 31 "a wild adventure across the Trek universe" may mean Star Trek legacy characters like Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine or Ash Tyler (Shazad Latif) from Star Trek: Discovery could cameo in Section 31 . Encouragingly, Michelle Yeoh believes in this project so much that she used her clout as an Oscar winner to ensure Star Trek: Section 31 happens, so it's a safe bet Emperor Georgiou's long-awaited return will be something special.

In a statement, Discovery co-showrunner and Section 31 executive producer Alex Kurtzman praised this development, confirming, "And we're off to the races! Star Trek: Picard's Potential Legacy Spinoff Gets Promising Update From Series Star

Star Trek: Section 31 's official release date hasn't been confirmed yet, though its synopsis teased the former Mirror Universe Emperor Georgiou joining "a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets," as she confronts "the sins of her past.” Per Variety, the film will be directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, who previously helmed multiple Discovery episodes and two episodes of Star Trek: Short Treks , while its screenplay will be written by veteran Discovery writer Craig Sweeny. This announcement comes as Star Trek: Discovery enters its fifth and final season this year, which actor Elias Toufexis described as, "pure adventure from episode 1 to 10. It’s chases and battles and there’s still all the Star Trek stuff. There’s a lot."

What's Next for Star Trek After the Conclusion of Picard?

2023, meanwhile, saw the conclusion of Star Trek: Picard after three seasons, though fans continue to petition Paramount+ to greenlight a spinoff series titled Star Trek: Legacy . Likewise, the fan-favorite Discovery spinoff Star Trek: Strange New Worlds released its second season to critical acclaim, with one episode even seeing Captain Pike's USS Enterprise crew meet the cast of the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks . Another Trek series, Star Trek: Prodigy , was briefly canceled by Paramount+ but -- thanks to a massive online campaign -- was eventually picked up by Netflix for season 2. I n addition to crossing over with Star Trek: Voyager characters, showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman have expressed interest in bringing some of Prodigy 's main cast like Dal and Gwyn to live-action someday.

Star Trek: Voyager Actor Weighs in on Controversial Tuvix Debate

Outside of Star Trek , Yeoh recently starred in Kenneth Branagh's A Haunting in Venice and voiced the Maximal Airazor in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts . She also lent her voice to the upcoming Paramount+ film The Tiger's Apprentice and will have roles in James Cameron's Avatar sequels and the two-part Wicked movie adaptation.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 premieres on Paramount+ in April 2024.

Star Trek: Section 31 Just Beefed Up Its Cast With Stars From Ted Lasso And More Boldly Going Into Production With Michelle Yeoh

This is so exciting!

Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery

After months of teases regarding a start date, one of the most anticipated upcoming Star Trek projects is finally rolling film. Paramount+ announced that Section 31 , the Discovery spinoff movie starring Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh , is finally commencing with production, and that's not all. Additional actors were added to the cast, and the newest members include stars from Ted Lasso and other high-profile shows.

With principal photography officially underway on Star Trek: Section 31 , it's exciting to finally know the names of some actors who are joining the cast led by Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou. While there are no familiar faces from other Trek shows to highlight at this time, the lineup of people listed so far is quite impressive, and it bodes well for one of Starfleet's most secretive and morally gray organizations.

Sam Richardson, Kacey Rohl, and Omari Hardwick

Ted Lasso's Sam Richardson And More Join Star Trek: Section 31

It was officially announced that Sam Richardson, Kacey Rohl, Omari Hardwick, Sven Ruygrok, Robert Kazinsky, Humberly Gonzalez and James Hiroyuki Liao have all been cast in undisclosed roles. It's a bummer we don't know about the characters they'll play at this time or whether they'll align with or be against Michelle Yeoh's Georgiou. Nevertheless, it'll be exciting to see this cast together when the movie is streamable for those with Paramount+ subscriptions .

Annie Wersching's Borg Queen in Star Trek: Picard

Her husband paid tribute on the anniversary of her death.

Among the standouts in this cast lineup is Sam Richardson, who won an Emmy in 2023 for Guest Actor In A Comedy Series for his role in Ted Lasso . Richardson is well known for his comedic chops, as he's played key roles in the Netflix series I Think You Should Leave and Hulu's The Afterparty . He's also done sci-fi, and his experience with time travel-centered storytelling in The Tomorrow War might come in handy for this project. (I'd imagine that the sci-fi bits of Georgiou returning to the past may need to be explained to other actors.)

Omari Hardwick is greatly known for his starring role as James "Ghost" St. Patrick in Power but was also featured in the cast of The Mother ,  the latest action flick from Jennifer Lopez . He was also part of the ensemble of Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead . With a multitude of acting credits in film and TV under his belt, he brings a veteran's presence to this production.

Kacey Rohl might be familiar to Arrow fans, as she played Alena from Seasons 5 through 7 and also played Marina on The Magicians . Meanwhile, Sven Ruygrok is coming on fresh off his work with the cast of One Piece and was also on the BET series Pulse .

Robert Kazinsky comes into Star Trek: Section 31 with a fair bit of experience, having been part of many projects, from EastEnders to Pacific Rim .  The same is true of Humberly Gonzalez, who was in Netflix's Ginny & Georgia . Rounding out the casting announcement is James Hiroyuki Liao, who has worked on shows like Prison Break , Barry , and Netflix's ill-fated Cowboy Bebop adaptation.

That's all we know so far about Star Trek: Section 31 , aside from the fact its production is happening alongside that of Strange New Worlds Season 3. That series was one day away from filming when the strikes hit in 2023, but the word so far is that the two will commence with production simultaneously without any logistical issues. Let's hope more information on the film arrives soon, including some additional plot details.

Though Star Trek: Section 31 is in production, Paramount+ has yet to announce a release date. While you wait for more information, catch up on all there is to know about Michelle Yeoh's Georgiou in the meantime by revisiting old episodes of Discovery .

Star Trek: Section 31 : Everything We Know

Michelle Yeoh is beaming back up as Philippa Georgiou—and this time, the Star Trek: Discovery alum is getting her own movie. What's next for everyone's favorite intergalactic conquerer?

preview for 5 Things to Know About Michelle Yeoh

“I’m beyond thrilled to return to my Star Trek family and to the role I’ve loved for so long,” said Yeoh in a press statement. “ Section 31 has been near and dear to my heart since I began the journey of playing Philippa all the way back when this new golden age of St ar Trek launched. To see her finally get her moment is a dream come true in a year that’s shown me the incredible power of never giving up on your dreams.”

The Section 31 movie has been a long time coming. The project originally went into development as a television series in 2019, based on a set of novels that explores a secretive organization within Starfleet called Section 31. After years with little news about the series, Trek fans were shocked and delighted to learn that Section 31 will instead make its way to the screen as an event film.

David Stapf, president of CBS Studios, explained the network's plan to continue working with Yeoh, after she appeared in Star Trek: Discovery . “For years we’ve been looking forward to Michelle Yeoh one day returning to Star Trek ,” he said . “Her powerful performance as Captain and Emperor Georgiou was a pivotal moment for the return of the franchise, and her portrayal resonated with fans around the world in a multitude of ways. We couldn’t be prouder to join forces with Michelle once again as we continue to explore the Star Trek universe, celebrate its legacy, and chart a course for the future of the franchise.”

What will happen in Star Trek: Section 31?

What can we expect from Star Trek: Section 31 ? For now, Yeoh and Paramount are staying rather mum, with Yeoh saying only: “We can’t wait to share what’s in store for you. And until then: long live and prosper (unless Emperor Georgiou decrees otherwise)!"

This film seems to center on Yeoh’s character, Emperor Georgiou. Though her exact trek through the galaxy has not been revealed, it seems she has an exciting journey ahead fighting alongside Starfleet. The movie follows Emperor Philippa Georgiou, a female Terran who joins Section 31, a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets. While helping Starfleet complete its mission, Georgiou will also face the sins of her past. It wouldn’t be a Star Trek movie without some complex twists and turns!

How Can I Watch Star Trek: Section 31 ?

Variety reports that the upcoming film is being produced by Paramount+. The film will be available to watch exclusively on the streamer upon its release. It may be just the beginning of a new phase for Star Trek , too; The Hollywood Reporter reports that Paramount+ plans to launch made-for-streaming Star Trek movies every two years.

When Will Star Trek: Section 31 Come Out?

The official premiere date has not been announced, but production begins later this year. If Paramount is able to film throughout 2023, the movie may be ready to watch as early as 2024.

We’ll continue to update this story as more information becomes available.

The official description of the film states, “Tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, [Georgiou] also must face the sins of her past.”

“And we’re off to the races! Thrilled to report principal photography has started on ‘Star Trek: Section 31’,” said executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “We welcome our incredible cast of new characters as they join our beloved Michelle Yeoh on her next wild adventure across the ‘Trek’ universe.”

Rumors of a Yeoh-led Section 31 project began upon the conclusion of Season 1 of “Discovery,” after a deleted scene revealed Georgiou being approached by a member of the shadowy intelligence organization on the Klingon homeworld. Section 31 was first introduced in the “Star Trek” series “Deep Space Nine.” The organization has since been featured in the “Star Trek” shows “Enterprise,” “Discovery,” “Lower Decks,” and “Picard,” as well as the film “Into Darkness.”

Craig Sweeny serves as writer and executive producer on “Star Trek: Section 31.” Olatunde Osunsanmi will direct and executive produce. Yeoh will executive produce in addition to starring. Alex Kurtzman and Aaron Baiers executive produce via Secret Hideout. Rod Rodenberry and Trevor Roth of Rodenberry Entertainment also executive produce along with Frank Siracusa and John Weber. ‘Section 31’ Movie Director Says It’s A “Different” Star Trek + New Character Details Revealed

star trek section 31 cast

| April 1, 2024 | By: Anthony Pascale 48 comments so far

Last week we got some of the first details on the Star Trek: Section 31 streaming movie starring Michelle Yeoh, including the first image. We now have some commentary from the director as well as some detail on that first image, specifically the new character it features.

Director talks Section 31

Star Trek: Section 31 is being directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi who is also the producing director for Star Trek: Discovery . Over the weekend he attended a Wondercon screening of Discovery’s season 5 premiere (which he also directed) and during the follow-up panel discussion, he talked briefly about Section 31 .

The movie brings back Michelle Yeoh, who appeared in the first three seasons of Discovery . Her last episode (“Terra Firma, Part 2”) was shot in late 2019 and since that time she has appeared in several TV series and films, including her Oscar-winning role in Everything Everywhere All at Once . Osunsanmi talked about her returning to her Star Trek role of Emperor Georgiou for Section 31 , which began filming earlier this year:

“Michelle came in that very first scene that we shot and she just – it was like she had never left. It was incredible. Actually, that was literally what I told her, “Wow, it feels like we just stopped filming with you yesterday.” And so you know what happens in that very first scene is – oh wait, I can’t give that away. [laughs]”

star trek section 31 cast

Michelle Paradise and Olatunde Osunsanmi at Wondercon 2024 (TrekMovie)

Yeoh has described it as “ Mission: Impossible in space,” and likened the tone to the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. In the Variety piece last week, Section 31 screenwriter said “It was always my goal to deliver an entertaining experience that is true to the universe but appeals to newcomers. I wanted a low barrier of entry so that anybody could enjoy it.”  At Wondercon Osunsanmi also talked about how Section 31 fit in with other Trek shows and movies:

“All these Treks are a little bit different. This one is definitely different, but it’s still Trek and we just finished shooting just a week and a half ago. And it is awesome.”

The official synopsis describes the movie: “Emperor Philippa Georgiou, joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past.” Georgiou joined Section 31 in the second season of Discovery , but apparently how the infamous organization is portrayed is one of the ways the movie will be different. Executive producer Alex Kurtzman tells Den of Geek Magazine in a new interview, that Section 31 in the new movie is “very different” than the one seen in Discovery season 2, adding “We’re not just repeating the thing that we did already.”

New character details

Last week’s Variety article had a first-look image which we shared here as well . It showed Michelle Yeoh whispering to an interesting-looking character who we could only see from behind. Paramount has now released that image to the press with some extra details in the official caption. We now know the character is named “Dada Noe” and he is played by Joe Pingue.

We still don’t have any details on who “Dada Noe” is. Canadian actor Joe Pingue was not one of the names officially announced with other members of the cast when Section 31 started filming in January. However, he did get a mention from another member of the cast announcing the end of shooting in March. Pingue has dozens of credits, primarily guest star roles including on The Expanse and Suits , as well as recurring roles in Orphan Black and Station Eleven . Pingue shared the above image on his Instagram with the following message:

Last week we wrapped filming #section31 I can’t begin to describe what a trip it was to play in the Star Trek universe. For now, enjoy this first official image which features the real deal @michelleyeoh_official and my uh….backside. More love and stories to come. What a cracking still!

star trek section 31 cast

Dada Noe is only the second named character for Section 31, in addition to Georgiou. Last week it was revealed that Kacey Rohl is playing a younger Rachel Garrett , who will eventually meet her fate as captain of the Enterprise-C (from TNG “Yesterday’s Enterprise.”) There are eight more members of the cast in unknown roles: Omari Hardwick, Sam Richardson, Sven Ruygrok, Humberly Gonzalez, Robert Kazinsky, James Hiroyuki Liao, Miku Martineau, and Augusto Bitter.

Waiting on release date

There still isn’t a release date or timeframe for when Section 31 will arrive on Paramount+. The fifth and final season of Discovery wraps up at the end of May. And we just learned season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds  is confirmed to be arriving in 2025 . With production already complete on Section 31 , it could be it arrives ahead of season 3 of Strange New Worlds , possibly even by the end of this year.

The fifth season of the adult animated series Lower Decks is expected to arrive later this year on Paramount+. And the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy will be released this year on Netflix as well. The new YA-focused live-action Starfleet Academy series doesn’t start shooting until late summer and may not arrive until 2026 .

Cast For ‘Star Trek: Section 31’ TV Movie Announced As Production Starts

Dada Noe is a very Star Wars sounding name! Can’t wait for this movie, love Michelle Yeoh. Such charisma. I know a lot of people hate her character and call her “space hitler” but to me she was the best part of Discovery and the show suffered when she left.

I know a few people in real life with the name Noe.

Sounds like a Bond villain to me!

I’m very down for her. Yeah, I don’t like the character, but let’s see how it goes as a launch point. I think this might be good fodder for the campy style that they went with in the Mirror Universe.

Sounds like Data Node. Lol

I’m cautiously optimistic about the movie and while we know very little everything we have heard so far has been a positive for me at least.

And I just read another interview about it from Kurtzman who made clear it won’t be the Section 31 from Discovery which sounds to me we’re getting the original, more underground and secret version again. If so that’s amazing news.

Agreed. It has to be better than their configuration.

Yeah. Given the timeframe, this puts things in the 24th century again, circa 2320 or thereabouts. It’s not canon, but Garrett is supposed to be born around 2300; we do know she became captain of the 1701-C at some point prior to 2344, when the C vanished into the temporal rift into the ‘bad’ alternate 2366.

So if we have a younger Garrett in the show who’s in her twenties, she would be a junior officer, maybe just recently graduated from the Academy. And Section 31 would again be the shadowy organization we later see in DS9.

I’d be okay if in this era they were less evil. That might be a nice change of pace…

Ricky loves the headline! “…It’s A “Different” Star Trek…” – one nobody asked for! DISCUSS!

Stop. CLOSED

Guardians of the Galaxy? Oh, yikes. That’s actually the wrong vibe for a Section 31 movie. Section 31 are not the good guys.

It’s definitely the wrong tone. It should not be a comedy.

People like to laugh though.

Everything is not so black and white. Section 31 are the not so bad guys if they’re fighting against the real bad guys at their level to protect the real good guys, aka the Federation. Sometimes you need to break the rules for the greater good… The end justifies the means, depending on the end and the means.

Do you get to take up arms against the Union if the Confederate states had as their main principle that black men should all be free men? Because such a stand is ethically right, doesn’t that transcend government or conventional ‘sides?’ (i’m just paraphrasing an exchange from THE ANDERSONVILLE TRIAL, but you get the idea.)

The justification for every atrocity committed by tinpot despots throughout history. Who gets to decide where to draw those lines, let alone who the real good and bad guys are? You?

I’ll pass, thanks.

Which is why I tempered my statement with “depending on the end and the means”. The problem is the “bad” guys do whatever they need to to achieve their nefarious ends. Their potential for harm is unimpeded. If the “good” guys are stuck in red tape before they do anything, the bad guys are going to get their ways. Rules are made to be broken isn’t a cliché for nothing. Again depends which rules and when. “Who gets to decide where to draw those lines, let alone who the real good and bad guys are?” I completely agree.

That jumped out at me too. Why can’t the tone be Star Trek instead of a completely different franchise?

100% agree with you Trellium G. I very much don’t like it when they describe or pitch a new Star Trek production by comparing to a different franchise that isn’t Star Trek.

It’s very disappointing when you come to find out that the original concept for Star Trek Picard’s second season or the original script by Bob Orci for the third (Kelvinverse/JJ Abrams) Star Trek movie were rejected because they were “too Star Trekkie.” Can someone remind the people in charge that this IS Star Trek and not something else.

If someone wants to make Guardians of the Galaxy, then call up Disney and Marvel Studios and pitch them your idea for a new Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

As a general rule of thumb, Star Trek shouldn’t try to be something else that isn’t. Star Trek should be Star Trek. Inspiration can be drawn from great literary works or classic WWII films such as “Run Silent, Run Deep,” but Star Trek should not be copying or mimicking other franchises.

Hopefully Section 31 will be inspired or similar to Guardians of the Galaxy but not necessarily mimicking aspects of it, like we’ve seen the writers on Discovery, Picard, and even Strange New Worlds mimic other franchises.

ST has been apeing ‘star wars’ with the movies for years

“ I very much don’t like it when they describe or pitch a new Star Trek production by comparing to a different franchise that isn’t Star Trek. ”

In fairness, though, that’s not endemic to Star Trek. It’s been how Hollywood works since decades before Star Trek existed. At pitch meetings, writers will often describe new concepts in terms of other franchises. “It’s Murder She Wrote meets The Fugitive.” “It’s Indiana Jones, but with a Casablanca motif.” And so on. Heck, even Star Trek was sold to the networks with the phrase “It’s Wagon Train to the stars.” TV shows are created, pitched, and marketed by how similar they are to other shows. That has always happened and it will always happen. I have no issue with that since I see it all the time at work. What I ***do*** have an issue with is when the comparisons make no sense, as with Section 31 and the Guardians of the Galaxy. That just means the people involved don’t understand the property they’re writing.

The whole “Guardians Of The Galaxy” reference is meant to appeal to Guardian movie fans, nothing more. They want eyeballs in front of this film, period.

As much as I agree with this, that ship has sailed.

GoTG was about a bunch of outlaws and killers

Sounds pretty cool to me.

But does it sound like Star Trek?

People actually liked Guardians of the Galaxy. Don’t knock it.

When did I knock Guardians of the Galaxy? I didn’t.

Honestly? At this point it’s fine. What they did with it in Disco kind of ruined the mystery anyway, so just embrace it and let’s go have some fun.

I just hope it isn’t a “quippy” and “zippy” tone like every Marvel movie, where the characters are all sassy and sarcastic just for the sake of making the public laugh. Every time the writers at SH try to write quippy dialog, it’s just nauseating. Their jokes – not funny. “Yum yum” comes to mind.

Er… “new character details”? So… a name. For *one* character. And nothing else.

Looking forward to this – I’m still of the opinion that this is aimed squarely at the international market, so it’s natural for it to have a different look and feel. It’ll offend some sensibilities, they’ll just have to get over it.

As an international Trekkie I agree with this. This can be a possible gateway to the Asian market where Trek and even Star Wars are quite weak.

What exactly does “All these Treks are a little bit different. This one is definitely different, but it’s still Trek” mean? How is Section 31 different?

Does he mean different in the sense that the main cast are not members of Starfleet, or different is some other way, such as tone, pacing, and style? Star Trek: Prodigy’s first season, albeit intentionally aimed at younger audiences, was not based around a Starfleet crew.

I wonder why these current show runners feel the need to make all of these “different” Treks, instead of simply making just making good old-fashion Star Trek, like they’ve achieved with Strange New Worlds? Discovery and Picard (especially the first season of Picard) both felt so dark and unfamiliar to the Star Trek I grew up enjoying in the 90s and early 2000s. At first, I was not interested in a Section 31 series or movie, but the announcement that Kacey Rohl is playing a younger Rachel Garrett honestly has been intrigued.

I’ve always loved the Enterprise-C, Captain Garrett, and Lt. Richard Castillo, so anything that sheds a bit more light into the backstory of Captain Garrett definitely peeks my interest. I hope Section 31 won’t be too “different” and be a well-written enjoyable film. The fact that it will be a movie rather than tv series, has me hopeful that the story will be tight and well-paced rather than dragged out like Star Trek: Picard’s first two seasons were.

I agree that it’s annoying that every new creative direction the franchise takes is supposed to be “different” in the sense of trying to compare it to existing franchises. But in rare praise I’m about to give for Secret Hideout, I think they were right to do Discovery as this dark, action heavy, serialized show. The problem is that it wasn’t good, and the writing was terrible and the characters insufferable. I think if they had made good, interesting characters, good stories, like Battlestar Galactica, we would all be lauding it for updating the Trek formula for modern audiences. Instead we got schlock. At the same time, I don’t see why they would make five identical shows either, so yes, I think their approach is right to make different kinds of shows. I just wish at least one of them was good Star Trek like we all knew and loved.

I think Discovery was hampered somewhat by all the behind the scenes drama after Fuller left in season one. They were stuck with the creative decisions he made and had to make the best of it.

As for the complaints about every new creative direction being ‘different’ I see that as a positive. Would you prefer they just kept making all of the same type of show?

I love Michelle Yeoh, but I just have a hard time wrapping my head around the idea of some sort of redemption arc for a character that pretty much made Darth Vader and Hitler look like boy scouts when it came to death count. Yeoh’s great performance aside, the character was written to comic book levels of evil in the beginning of the mirror universe storyline to make her a believable protaganist. And for the record, I was also always bothered with the redemption arc of Vader, the guy murdered billions but he gets to still go to Jedi Heaven because he tossed Palpatine down a giant shaft. Anyways, some of what is coming out of this production (bringing Rachel Garrett back e.g.) has me interested, so I wish nothing but the best for this production and look forward to seeing how they navigate Georgiou’s development.

Mirror universe Spock also got ‘red on his ledger’ but was redeemed as someone who could turn the Terran empire around.

I am fine with the idea of a redemption arc. Play it up as nature vs nurture and seed it over a long period of time where she starts to thaw but still has an edge – they did it with Seven, that’s a perfect template. Have her realize the merit of empathy and compassion and Starfleet values and form friendships beyond Burnham.

They did none of that. They had her act like she never wanted to be there, antagonize everyone, fixate on Burnham because she reminded her of hers, and then suddenly at the end she is redeemed and getting hugged because she can’t stay in the Prime Universe so far in the future. They practically gaslit the audience by saying she was on a redemption arc this whole time. Through sheer force of talent, Yeoh pulls off a lot in her last two episodes, but none of it was set up properly. All the time they wasted on her needling people or goofing off with Linus for some reason etc. Emperor Georgiou is Exhibit A when discussing how Discovery was muddling its way through things.

I always felt that for Vaders redemption, he was only redeemed in Luke’s eyes and not for the entire galaxy. Plus killing a tyrant emperor who is probably responsible for much more deaths than Vader should count for something.

We certainly need a different Star Trek. The same old Trek is pretty boring and will not generate new and younger fans. Thank goodness for Discovery, it made me a Trek fan again.

I saw TMP at 5 or 6 years old and that was what made me a lifelong fan. That movie got me interested in TOS and then every show and movie that followed until the current version of Trek happened. I mean, I’m still a Star Trek fan, but the newer stuff seems like it is trying to be everything except Star Trek. Just my opinion.

I hope this is good. I love Michelle Yeoh. The one thing that’s encouraging is that it’s not intersecting with eras previously explored. Does this mean we get the monster maroons???

While I’m looking forward to this, I’m tiring of the “this is an [even more!] different Trek.” Arguably, the two most successful Kurtzman-era Trek productions, Picard Season 3 and Strange New Worlds, have returned in large part to proven formulas that bring old fans back en masse while attracting new fans (as evidenced by my 13 and 12-year old boys).

Why do different?

I think this in large part of Academy, the Trek show no one asked for, while there’s a literal campaign to do Legacy. Trek leads say it’s all about the fans while ignoring, in large part, what the fans want.

Some fans seem to think they can turn these shows around at the snap of a finger. That once an idea is trending they should just drop what they are doing and chase that instead. Academy was simply further along in development and made it to production. Maybe being able to reuse some of the sets from Discovery also makes it cheaper. The main barrier to a Legacy show right now seems to be Paramount and their financial difficulties.

My guess would be Thanksgiving 2024 for its release. (Unless Yellowstone is ready first.)

I hope that I will enjoy this. I was not a big fan of Emperor Georgiou or the writers making Section 31 into a mainstream part of Starfleet Intelligence. Also, please don’t have Garrett or anyone else know of her fate on the Enterprise-C.
