USS Archimedes

star trek uss archimedes

The USS Archimedes was a Federation Starship of the Archimedes class. The vessel was the only ship of her class and the design was abandoned when the ship went missing with all hands on Stardate 2386.02.08.

The Archimedes was designed as a test bed for new propulsion systems and weapons systems, some of which would later be implemented in the Sovereign Class starship.

Ahmed Ibn Salid was housed aboard this vessel while his father was assigned here. It was not long after the Salid family departed this ship that the vessel went missing. All Starfleet efforts to locate her have failed and the vessel was eventually classified as lost with all hands. As a result of several design flaws the Archimedes project was scrapped, making the USS Archimedes the only ship of this class to ever see service in starfleet, although she never advanced beyond her initial NX classification.

Screen Rant

Star trek: lower decks season 2 ending & tng connection explained.

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2's finale cliffhanger rivals some of TNG's shocking finales. We break down every major development on the Cerritos.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Lower Decks  season 2 finale, "First First Contact".

A shocking development in   Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2's ending saw the Captain of the USS Cerritos arrested by Starfleet Security. It's a cliffhanger ending that evokes some of Star Trek: The Next Generation ' s jaw-dropping season finales. After the heroics of Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) saved the Cerritos and enabled Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) to rescue a fellow Starfleet ship in jeopardy - just as Captain William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) saved the Cerritos at the end of Lower Decks season 1 - Freeman is surprised by Starfleet Security and arrested for allegedly blowing up the homeworld of the Pakleds.

The Pakleds were a problem for the Cerritos throughout Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2. Building towards the Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2 finale, episode 6, "The Spy Humongous," saw a blundering Pakled spy infiltrate the Cerritos while Captain Freeman was trying to negotiate peace on Pakled Planet. Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2, episode 9, "wej Duj (Three Ships)," introduced the Lower Deckers of alien starships, especially the Klingon Ma'ah (Jon Curry), who stopped his Captain from colluding with the Pakleds against the United Federation of Planets. These elements built up to Star Trek: Lower Decks ' season 2 finale, " First First Contact ," where Freeman was taken into custody immediately after she led the Cerritos' first instance of making First Contact with an alien race.

Star Trek: Lower Decks ' season 2's outstanding finale upends the comfortable paradigm aboard the USS Cerritos once again. Freeman's arrest for treason is just as precarious for her rebellious daughter, Ensign Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), as it is for the Captain and leaves both of their futures in doubt. With this latest upheaval aboard the Cerritos, here's where Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2's ending leaves the Cerritos' key crewmembers going into season 3.

Captain Freeman Arrested: Was She Framed (All The Clues)

Starfleet Security arrested Captain Freeman at the end of Star Trek: Lower Decks ' season 2 finale immediately after she achieved a career-high by leading the inaugural  First Contact by the Cerritos . Freeman is accused of conspiring with Klingon extremists to plant a bomb that destroyed Pakled Planet. Freeman was humiliated by being escorted off of her own starship in irons in front of her crew. Given what fans know about Captain Freeman, it's hard to believe that Starfleet Security is right and Freeman worked with Klingons to blow up a planet. The likely scenario is that Carol is being framed, but by who?

The only time Captain Freeman actually set foot on Pakled Planet was in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2, episode 6, "The Spy Humongous." As she tried to broker peace between the United Federation of Planets and the Pakleds, Freeman and the resurrected Lt. Shaxs (Fred Tatasciore) were repeatedly frustrated by the idiotic Pakleds. They were essentially held prisoner on the planet while Commander Jack Ransom (Jerry O'Connell) hunted the Pakled spy aboard the Cerritos. However, at this point, the Klingon Captain Togg (Robin Atkin Downes) was likely already secretly working with the Pakleds to attack the Federation. It's possible the Klingons could have been also planning to betray the Pakleds and frame the Federation for destroying the homeworld of their "allies."

And yet, Ma'ah killed Togg and took over as Captain of the Klingon Bird-of-Prey Che'ta to stop the Pakled and Klingon alliance from destroying the Cerritos in "wej Duj (Three Ships)." Since Togg is already dead, this points to someone else working behind the scenes, who was possibly pulling the strings and knows the full story behind the Klingons' conspiracy with the Pakleds' strings. This would mean Captain Freeman is just a patsy caught up in a sinister, far-reaching plot. Regardless, Captain Freeman has been disgraced and has lost the confidence of Starfleet. She will likely stand trial while Mariner and her friends seek the truth to exonerate the Captain in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3.

The Secret Behind Rutherford's Bionic Implant

Star Trek: Lower Decks ' season 2 finale dropped further clues about the truth behind Ensign Sam Rutherford's (Eugene Cordero) bionic implant. Rutherford had the operation to install his tech before the series began but his implant has malfunctioned multiple times throughout Star Trek: Lower Decks. In " First First Contact ," Rutherford suddenly saw a memory of mysterious surgeons operating on him and discussing how Sam would believe receiving the implant was  "elective."  Rutherford's eyepiece and why he has it in the first place could have an insidious purpose.

Rutherford is actually wearing his second implant after the original was destroyed in Star Trek: Lower Decks ' season 1 finale. The process of losing his first bionic tech and getting a new one caused him to lose his memories of his best friend, Ensign D'Vana Tendi (Noël Wells), which caused Sam a lot of distress. Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3 could finally reveal the truth behind Rutherford's implant, and the fact that Tendi was transferred out of the sickbay and into training to become a Science Officer like  Spock (Leonard Nimoy) may help Rutherford get to the real reason why he's wearing a bionic implant in the first place.

Boimler Kept Saving The Day In Season 2 (While Mariner Disappoints)

To save the USS Archimedes, which was damaged by a debris field and about to crash into the Luperian homeworld, Captain Freeman ordered all of the hull plates to disengage from the Cerritos. But it was Brad Boimler who heroically dove into Cetacean Ops and nearly drowned unlocking the last hull plate for the gambit to work so that the Cerritos could save the Archimedes. It was the ultimate heroic act by Boimler, who spent Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2 rising to the occasion and saving the day. Boimler also outwitted the Pakleds when he was still serving on Captain Riker's USS Titan and Bradward later defeated an evil computer named Agimus (Jeffrey Combs) who tried to pit him and Mariner against each other.

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2 was a remarkable turnaround for Boimler, who was strictly by-the-book but insecure and inexperienced in season 1. In contrast, Mariner had a challenging season 2 where she worked more closely than ever with her mother, Captain Freeman. This curbed Mariner's ability to go rogue and also exposed some of her limitations and issues with command. Mariner even blanked when Freeman asked her to come up with a risky scheme to save the Archimedes. Mariner is now even more aware that her career wearing a Starfleet uniform has depended on her mother's protection, and what it means for Beckett now that Captain Freeman is under arrest remains to be seen.

Will The Cerritos Get A New Captain In Lower Decks Season 3?

With Carol Freeman under arrest, the Cerritos will likely get a new Captain when Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3 begins. The California-class starship will also need to undergo repairs since it was completely stripped off its hull platings. Commanding a California-class starship isn't a sought-after position in Starfleet and Captain Freeman herself was about to be transferred to a new and better ship before she was taken into custody. This would seem to exclude possible top names like Captain Riker or even Captain Sonya Gomez (Lycia Naff) as the Cerritos' new Captain so there could be an entirely new character coming aboard to command the Cerritos at the start of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3. It could even lead to a nightmare " Captain Jellico (Ronny Cox) situation" for Mariner and the crew.

How Star Trek: Lower Decks' Season 2 Ending Connects To TNG

Star Trek: Lower Decks ' season 2 finale heroically went all out in homaging Star Trek: The Next Generation' s season-ending shockers, right down to using TNG 's famous blue "To be continued..." font and Chris Westlake's score mimicking the ominous music heard when TNG ended a season with a cliffhanger. For Star Trek: Lower Decks , Captain Freeman's arrest is as tumultuous as Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) being assimilated by the Borg in "The Best of Both Worlds" or Worf (Michael Dorn) leaving the USS Enterprise-D to fight in the Klingon civil war in "Redemption."

Further TNG connections include Star Trek: Lower Decks finally showing Cetacean Ops, which was mentioned in  TNG  but never seen on the show itself. In addition, Sonya Gomez was merely an Ensign when she was introduced on TNG but Star Trek: Lower Decks revealed Gomez rose to become Captain of the USS Archimedes and a close friend of Captain Freeman's (who also mentored a young Will Riker before Riker took on Beckett Mariner as his protege). Star Trek: Lower Decks takes pride in continuing the style and feel of Star Trek: The Next Generation , albeit in a faster-paced, comedy format, and season 3 will continue the Cerritos' wacky adventures even as it resolves the cliffhanger of what will happen to Captain Freeman.

10 Background Characters Star Trek Fans Love

  • Background characters in Star Trek add depth to the universe, making it feel lived-in and real.
  • Beloved regular faces like Lt. M'Ress, Nurse Ogawa, and Mr. Mot enhance Star Trek shows.
  • From Lt. Linus to Dr. Migleemo, each background character brings their own unique charm to the series.

There's something about beloved Star Trek background characters that really helps its universe feel lived-in and real. While the primary action is taking place, it's up to the background actors to make the sets look like genuine places where people are going about their business. These are the folks at the bridge stations who aren't in the opening credits. They're the assistants to the main characters. They're the beloved regular faces spotted among the crowds in establishing shots, and the names floating around duty rosters and civilian gossip that remind viewers that there's more to Star Trek than the captains and chief engineers.

There are so many background characters from all of the Star Trek shows who are beloved by fans, of course. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's Promenade is full of colorful background characters without names or personal histories, like the singing Klingon chef (Ron Taylor). Star Trek: Voyager features recurring background characters, since being stuck in the Delta Quadrant means no new Starfleet officers can join the crew. Star Trek: The Next Generation features background characters who sometimes level up to become proper guest stars , and in one famous case, a series regular: the "most important person in Starfleet" and original lower-decker, Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney). Here are 10 background characters Star Trek fans love.

20 Best New Star Trek Characters Of The Last 20 Years

Lt. m'ress (majel barrett), star trek: the animated series.

Lt. M'Ress is a Caitian officer with a seat on the USS Enterprise bridge, created for Star Trek: The Animated Series when Star Trek 's jump to animation meant that the aliens in Star Trek were no longer restrained by what the makeup department could physically create. As the first Caitian in Star Trek , M'Ress sets the standard for the feline alien species , later echoed by Star Trek 's other animated Caitian, Dr. T'Ana (Gillian Vigman) in Star Trek: Lower Decks .

Like many background characters, M'Ress' cool character design is a top reason for her appeal, but M'Ress earns her spot on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise by being a capable officer. M'Ress' duties as relief communications officer include communication within the Enterprise as well as to outside vehicles, along with scientific duties as situations arise, similar to the duties of primary communications officer Lt. Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols).

Lt. M'Ress appeared in 2 episodes of the "anything but canon" animated web series Star Trek: very Short Treks, voiced by Cristina Milizia.

Lt. T'Veen (Stephanie Czajkowski)

Star trek: picard.

The starship action of Star Trek: Picard season 3 takes place primarily aboard the USS Titan-A, and as such, introduces a brand-new bridge crew of younger Starfleet officers, one of which is the Vulcan Lt. T'Veen. T'Veen stands out as both a woman and a Vulcan for her striking bald appearance , marking her look as both novel and unique. Actor Stephanie Czajkowski suggests that T'Veen may have some Deltan ancestry, but in reality, T'Veen's lack of locks comes from Czajkowski's own battles with cancer.

When Vadic (Amanda Plummer) commandeers the Titan in Star Trek: Picard season 3, episode 8, "Surrender" , T'Veen is one of the Titan bridge officers used as leverage against Vadic's request for Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers). At this point in Picard , the Titan's crew are painted as candidates for a potential spinoff show, but Lt. T'Veen's shocking death at Vadic's hand sends the message that no one is safe.

Sonya Gomez (Lycia Naff)

Star trek: the next generation, star trek: lower decks.

The original claim to fame for Ensign Sonya Gomez (Lycia Naff) is being the eager young engineer who unfortunately spills hot chocolate on Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) in Star Trek: The Next Generation , season 2, episode 16, "Q Who". Serving on the USS Enterprise-D with Lt. Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) is Gomez's dream job, and the chocolate-covered Captain isn't going to earn her any high marks. La Forge recognizes Gomez's talent as an antimatter specialist, and helps Sonya focus, despite the gaffe.

Lycia Naff makes a triumphant return to Star Trek as Captain Sonya Gomez in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2, episode 10, "First First Contact", commanding the USS Archimedes with the same compassionate focus on problem-solving that La Forge had as Gomez's mentor. Captain Gomez's story is proof that Star Trek characters do learn from their earliest mistakes , and can come out on top in the end.

Mr. Mot (Ken Thorley)

Star trek: the next generation.

In an interesting twist, Mr. Mot is a barber working on the USS Enterprise-D, and happens to be a Bolian, a species that has no hair of their own. Nonetheless, Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) says that the civilian Mot is the best barber in Starfleet . There's more to being a barber than just cutting hair, after all, and Mot's listening ears are available to anyone who comes to sit in his barbershop chair, as long as they don't mind receiving a little free advice on the side.

The Bolian barber became an entrepreneur.

After providing excellent service to the crew on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Mot grew even more successful. The Bolian barber became an entrepreneur, which is evident by the presence of Mr. Mot's Hair Emporium as one of the many businesses in Stardust City, on the planet Freecloud, as seen in Star Trek: Picard season 1, episode 5, "Stardust City Rag".

Bolians are named for Star Trek director Cliff Bole, who directed a total of 42 episodes between his work on Star Trek: The Next Generation , Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , and Star Trek: Voyager .

10 Star Trek Characters Fans See Themselves In

Groundskeeper boothby (ray walston), star trek: the next generation, star trek: voyager.

Mr. Boothby is a positive influence on generations of Starfleet officers at Starfleet Academy, but one would be wrong to assume that Boothby is an accomplished instructor working to shape young minds, because Boothby works at Starfleet Academy as the head groundskeeper. Groundskeeper Boothby's no-nonsense approach to the natural development of the Academy's flora also applies to how Boothby interacts with Starfleet cadets .

Boothby's influence on the USS Voyager crew was evident in Star Trek: Voyager season 5, episode 4, "In the Flesh", when a Species 8472 leader took on the guise of Boothby in a Starfleet Academy simulation, instead of a high-ranking Admiral.

Sometimes, Boothby's advice is harsh, as was the case with Jean-Luc Picard as a Starfleet Academy cadet. But in the end, Boothby always has an uncanny sensibility for knowing exactly how to cultivate the best forms of both botanical specimens and future Starfleet officers.

Lt. Kayshon (Carl Tart)

Star trek: lower decks.

Lt. Kayshon has the honor of being the first Tamarian in Starfleet , debuting in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2, episode 2, "Kayshon, His Eyes Open", as the USS Cerritos' new security officer. The Tamarians, first seen in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 5, episode 2, "Darmok", have a puzzling metaphorical language reliant on background knowledge of Tamarian culture. The Tamarian phrases from "Darmok" have been adopted by Star Trek fans as a fun way to signal our fandom to each other, so it makes sense that a Tamarian officer should show up on Star Trek: Lower Decks , itself a celebration of Star Trek 's own weird and wonderful moments.

Kayshon spends more time in the background after his first episode, still part of the USS Cerritos' security team. The years between "Picard and Dathon at El-Adred" and Kayshon's assignment to the USS Cerritos in Star Trek: Lower Decks mean the communication gap between Kayshon and the rest of the USS Cerritos' crew is much smaller than it might have been in the past. Kayshon communicates in Federation Standard, but still slips into Tamarian metaphor from time to time, which just adds new phrases to the Tamarian lexicon.

Dr. Migleemo (Paul F. Tompkins)

In Dr. Migleemo, Star Trek: Lower Decks continues the tradition that was established with Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) on Star Trek: The Next Generation by having a counselor aboard the USS Cerritos . Strictly speaking, Migleemo is not the galaxy's best counselor , with a whole plateful of food metaphors that don't always land butter-side-up, but Migleemo's heart is always in the right place.

As a bird-like alien of an unspecified species, Dr. Migleemo's character design pays homage to Star Trek: The Animated Series , since a bird man in a tweed suit may not translate that well to live action, but works perfectly for animation.

Even though Migleemo is bad at his job, it's in a way that's not actively harmful, but makes you want to root for him, just like any other lower decker on the Cerritos. Sometimes Migleemo gets it right , after all, like counseling Ensign D'Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) in the senior science officer training program in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3, episode 3, "Mining the Mind's Mines".

Nurse Alyssa Ogawa (Patti Yasutake)

Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) usually has assistants in the background of the USS Enterprise-D's sick bay, and one of these, Nurse Alyssa Ogawa, is a regular background character starting in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 4. Ogawa grows as a character over the course of TNG 's final four seasons , receiving a full name as of Star Trek: The Next Generation season 5, episode 18, "Cause and Effect", and developing as a character through Ogawa's casual conversations with Dr. Crusher about Alyssa's dating history.

Nurse Ogawa gets more to do when Ogawa is one of the four USS Enterprise-D junior officers at the heart of Star Trek: The Next Generation season 7, episode 15, "Lower Decks" , focusing on the friendship between often-overlooked characters. Ogawa's story focuses on Alyssa's relationship with Lieutenant Andrew Powell, and culminates in their off-screen engagement.

Nurse Alyssa Ogawa also appears in two Star Trek movies: Star Trek: Generations and Star Trek: First Contact .

Lt. Linus (David Benjamin Tomlinson)

Star trek: discovery.

With Lt. Linus, Star Trek: Discovery shows in a casual, but meaningful way what it looks like to actively include someone with unique needs . Arriving in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, Lt. Linus is a Saurian science officer who never fails to provide a little levity just by being himself. By all accounts, Linus is well-liked among the USS Discovery's crew , with plenty of crew members referring to Linus and Saurian customs relatively favorably.

Lt. Linus is accepted as someone whose needs are a little different to most human officers'.

Starfleet easily makes accommodations available for Linus' differences in biology , granting personal time set aside for annual shedding, and providing heat lamps in Linus' quarters as needed. After Star Trek: Discovery 's time jump , Linus takes a little more time to understand the new 32nd-century technology, but he's never admonished for catching up to the learning curve. Instead, Lt. Linus is accepted as someone whose needs are a little different to most human officers'.

Every DS9 Alien In Star Trek: Discovery

Morn (mark allen shepherd), star trek: deep space nine.

Morn is a fixture in Quark's Bar from the start of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , the perennial barfly occupying the same seat at the end of the table. According to the other patrons at Quark's, Morn rarely shuts up, but the joke is, of course, that Morn is always cut off before delivering any speaking lines. Instead, the picture of who Morn really is slowly comes together through other people's comments and conversation about Morn, with the speculation about Morn's true identity finally coming to a head in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 6, episode 12, "Who Mourns for Morn". Morn's apparent death is a blow to the community and all who knew him, but also reveals surprising facts about DS9 's Morn , like Morn's secret riches and tactical mind, confirming that there was more to the enigmatic Lurian than Morn's signature bar stool.

True to form, Morn is seated at Quark's Bar when the USS Cerritos visits Deep Space Nine in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3, episode 6, "Hear All, Trust Nothing".

Sometimes the Star Trek characters who aren't major players become some of the most beloved characters. When background characters on Star Trek attract the eyes of viewers with interesting character designs or memorable moments, they may wind up in expanded roles as their Star Trek shows go on. These featured background characters will get lines and names, and might even have a major part in an episode or two, but most live out their lives off-screen. From the bridge crew to the lower decks, from Starfleet officers to civilians, it's the unsung heroes in the background who keep Star Trek moving while the main action is taking place.

Star Trek: The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Lower Decks are all streaming on Paramount+.

DALLAS (AP) — The first model of the USS Enterprise — used in the opening credits of the original “Star Trek” television series — has boldly gone back home, returning to creator Gene Roddenberry’s son decades after it went missing.

The model’s disappearance sometime in the 1970s had become the subject of lore, so it caused a stir when it popped up on eBay last fall. The sellers quickly took it down, and then contacted Dallas-based Heritage Auctions to authenticate it. Last weekend, the auction house facilitated the model’s return.

Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, CEO of Roddenberry Entertainment, said he’s thrilled to have the model that had graced the desk of his father, who died in 1991 at age 70.

“This is not going home to adorn my shelves,” Roddenberry said. “This is going to get restored and we’re working on ways to get it out so the public can see it and my hope is that it will land in a museum somewhere.”

AP AUDIO: Long-lost first model of the USS Enterprise from ‘Star Trek’ boldly goes home after twisting voyage.

AP correspondent Margie Szaroleta reports on the return of the original model of the USS Enterprise from the TV show “Star Trek.”

Heritage’s executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said the auction house was contacted by people who said they’d discovered it a storage unit, and when it was brought into their Beverly Hills office, he and a colleague “instantly knew that it was the real thing.”

FILE - A sign for The New York Times hangs above the entrance to its building, May 6, 2021, in New York. In spring 2024, NBC News, The New York Times and National Public Radio have each dealt with turmoil for essentially the same reason: journalists taking the critical gaze they deploy to cover the world and turning it inward at their own employers. (AP Photo/Mark Lennihan, File)

They reached out to Roddenberry, who said he appreciates that everyone involved agreed returning the model was the right thing to do. He wouldn’t go into details on the agreement reached but said “I felt it important to reward that and show appreciation for that.”

Maddalena said the model vanished in the 1970s after Gene Roddenberry loaned it to makers of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” which was released in 1979.

“No one knew what happened to it,” Rod Roddenberry said.

The 3-foot (0.91-meter) model of the USS Enterprise was used in the show’s original pilot episode as well as the opening credits of the resulting TV series, and was the prototype for the 11-foot (3-meter) version featured in the series’ episodes. The larger model is on display at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

The original “Star Trek” television series, which aired in the late 1960s, kicked off an ever-expanding multiverse of cultural phenomena, with TV and movie spinoffs and conventions where a fanbase of zealous and devoted Trekkies can’t get enough of memorabilia.

This USS Enterprise model would easily sell for more than $1 million at auction, but really “it’s priceless,” Maddalena said.

“It could sell for any amount and I wouldn’t be surprised because of what it is,” he said. “It is truly a cultural icon.”

Roddenberry, who was just a young boy when the model went missing, said he has spotty memories of it, “almost a deja vu.” He said it wasn’t something he’d thought much about until people began contacting him after it appeared on eBay.

“I don’t think I really, fully comprehended at first that this was the first Enterprise ever created,” he said.

He said he has no idea if there was something nefarious behind the disappearance all those decades ago or if it was just mistakenly lost, but it would be interesting to find out more about what happened.

“This piece is incredibly important and it has its own story and this would be a great piece of the story,” Roddenberry said.

Thankfully, he said, the discovery has cleared up one rumor: That it was destroyed because as a young boy, he’d thrown it into a pool.

“Finally I’m vindicated after all these years,” he said with a laugh.

Long-lost first model of the USS Enterprise from 'Star Trek' boldly goes home after twisting voyage

DALLAS — The first model of the USS Enterprise — used in the opening credits of the original “Star Trek” television series — has boldly gone back home, returning to creator Gene Roddenberry’s son decades after it went missing.

Heritage’s executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said the auction house was contacted by people who said they’d discovered it a storage unit, and when it was brought into their Beverly Hills office, he and a colleague “instantly knew that it was the real thing.”

Starfleet career [ ]

Starfleet academy [ ].

Georgiou attended Starfleet Academy from 2220 to 2224 . During this period she met Christopher Pike , who described her as the sharpest tool in the shed and a force to be reckoned with. He also remembered her drinking Pike and their fellow cadets underneath the table, but also for having every Starfleet Starfleet regulation down by the second week. Lieutenant Georgiou and Saru depart Kaminar

As a Lieutenant , Georgiou was serving aboard the USS Archimedes . In 2239 , she convinced Starfleet to allow her to transport Saru from his home world of Kaminar due to his high level of intelligence and curiosity, and despite the Prime Directive issues doing so raised. ( ST : " The Brightest Star ", DIS : " The Sound of Thunder ")

She earned an impressive list of commendations during her career, including the Star Cross and the Legion of Honor . She was also awarded a diploma from the Laikan Military Academy on Andoria for Advanced Interstellar Combat . ( DIS : " The Vulcan Hello ", " The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry ")

Commanding officer of the USS Shenzhou [ ]

Philippa Georgiou, 2249

Captain Georgiou aboard the Shenzhou in 2249

Sometime prior to 2249 , Georgiou was given command of the USS Shenzhou . In that year, the Shenzhou visited Vulcan where she welcomed Michael Burnham aboard as her new officer, at the request of Burnham's guardian , Sarek , with whom Georgiou had previously been acquainted. Sarek felt that Georgiou's personal history might help Burnham come to terms with her own past, although Georgiou feared that, one day, Burnham's Humanity might be overridden by the Vulcan training she had undergone. ( DIS : " Battle at the Binary Stars ")

As captain, Georgiou preferred a relaxed command style, encouraging conversation between her officers on the bridge ; in particular, she enjoyed a friendly rivalry between Burnham (who eventually became her first officer ) and her science officer , Saru , although she recognized when to cut between them and assert her authority. However, she was quick to react when an officer crossed a line. ( DIS : " The Vulcan Hello ")

Saving the Crepusculans [ ]

Michael Burnham and Philippa Georgiou

Georgiou with Michael Burnham on the Crepusculan planet

In 2256 , Captain Georgiou led an expedition to the Crepusculan homeworld , accompanied by Burnham, to prevent a drought from wiping out the native civilization . When a storm cut off communications with the Shenzhou , Georgiou used her footsteps to mark out a Starfleet symbol in the sand, allowing the starship to locate and recover the pair. ( DIS : " The Vulcan Hello ")

Encountering the Klingons [ ]

Dispatched to a binary star system to investigate a damaged interstellar relay , Georgiou used a telescope she kept in her ready room to visually identify an object of unknown origin . Feeling that the object's location prevented them from getting a closer look, she was inclined to agree with Saru's recommendation that they leave it alone; however, Burnham persuaded her to allow the first officer to take a thruster pack to investigate, on the condition that it was "just a flyby."

Despite Burnham returning from the "flyby" in critical condition, Georgiou was initially reluctant to accept her first officer's declaration that the object was of Klingon origin. She ultimately recognized that Burnham's view was not caused by her injuries, and ordered the ship to red alert , knowing that retreating from Federation space was not an option, rejecting Saru's calls to leave immediately.

Georgiou confers with Admiral Anderson

Georgiou receives her orders from Fleet Admiral Anderson

When a Klingon vessel decloaked before the Shenzhou , Georgiou informed Starfleet Command by way of an encoded message, and decided to adopt a non-aggressive posture, attempting to establish communications. After receiving orders from Fleet Admiral Brett Anderson to maintain their position and not engage, she remained unwilling to preemptively strike against them, hoping that whatever events transpired could connect the two civilizations.

Despite the entreaties of her first officer and the object's activation blinding the Shenzhou , Georgiou stood by her orders, angrily reprimanding Burnham for questioning her authority on her bridge . Burnham decided to take matters into her own hands, incapacitating Georgiou using a Vulcan nerve pinch and attempting to take command of the Shenzhou . Quickly recovering from the effects, Georgiou entered the bridge, armed with a phaser , and ordered her first officer to stand down, just as a fleet of Klingon ships entered the system. ( DIS : " The Vulcan Hello ")

Georgiou relieves Burnham of duty

Georgiou aims a phaser at Burnham after her attempted mutiny

After removing Burnham from the bridge, and upon the arrival of reinforcements, Georgiou was finally able to contact the Klingon fleet. Advising the Klingons to either leave or enter into dialogue, and expressing regret for the death of their warrior in the encounter with Burnham, Georgiou reassured them that the Federation came in peace. However, this was the clarion call that the Klingon leader, T'Kuvma , had been anticipating, and he used it to rally the Klingon fleet to attack, triggering the Battle of the Binary Stars .

The Shenzhou took significant damage during the initial volley, despite Georgiou's evasive action allowing the Federation fleet to cover its retreat. She then ordered the ship to cover the USS T'Plana-Hath . Georgiou was dismayed to learn that the damage sustained included hull breaches on the deck where the ship's brig was located – right where Burnham had been remanded.

With the Shenzhou completely disabled and drifting into the system's accretion disk , Georgiou instructed her crew to prepare to evacuate. Only the arrival of the USS Europa prevented the destruction of the ship, and Georgiou thanked Admiral Anderson for their assistance, explaining to her superior that the Klingons had fired in response to her communication, and reporting the state of the fleet.

Georgiou prepares to board the Klingon flagship

Determined to strike a blow against the Klingons after the deliberate ramming of the Europa , Georgiou took on a suggestion from Saru to use the Shenzhou 's worker bees to transport a photon warhead to the enemy flagship , and resolved to pilot the warhead in herself, as the auxiliary craft lacked an autopilot . However, Burnham, having survived the destruction of the brig, arrived on the bridge to warn Georgiou that killing T'Kuvma would only lead to his martyrdom . Instead, she proposed capturing T'Kuvma.

Still reeling from her first officer's actions, Georgiou asked why she had done what she had, and berated herself for her own arrogance in thinking she could "pick away the shell the Vulcans had put around" Burnham and in believing the first officer was ready for command.

Philippa Georgiou dies

Georgiou killed by T'Kuvma

Seeing the Klingons gathering their dead, Georgiou modified the plan, disabling the Klingon flagship by beaming the warhead to a Klingon corpse, then transporting aboard with Burnham to capture T'Kuvma. In the ensuing boarding action, Georgiou engaged the Klingon leader in hand-to-hand combat ; however, she was no match for the trained warrior and his mek'leth , and was killed. Her body was left behind on the Klingon ship as Burnham was beamed away. ( DIS : " Battle at the Binary Stars ")

Georgiou was nonetheless given a funeral , at which Saru presented a speech . ( DIS : " Context Is for Kings ")

Remains [ ]

Meanwhile, T'Kuvma's ship was assumed lost and left stranded by the other Klingons for six months. The surviving crew spent this time slowly repairing their crippled ship by salvaging the debris field left behind by the battle. Yet, after many months with no resupply, they faced the likelihood of starvation; Voq and his crew ate Georgiou's corpse , in part simply to survive, and in part as revenge for her role in their master's death. ( DIS : " The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry ", " Will You Take My Hand? ")

Following her death, Cadet Sylvia Tilly read everything there was on Georgiou. ( DIS : " Context Is for Kings ")

Georgiou's last will and testament reached Burnham six months after her death. It contained a holographic message, along with Georgiou's telescope, which she bequeathed to Burnham. ( DIS : " The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry ")

Saru told Burnham that her saving the Tardigrade would not bring back nor change the fact that her type of behavior during this crisis was exactly what killed Captain Georgiou. ( DIS : " Choose Your Pain ")

Georgiou's Starfleet badge , inscribed with her name and serial number , fell into the possession of Kol , then Head of the House of Kor . Eventually, Burnham took the badge from Kol while engaged in personal combat, beaming back to the USS Discovery with it. ( DIS : " Into the Forest I Go ")

After encountering Georgiou's counterpart in the mirror universe , Michael Burnham used her former captain's Starfleet badge to convince the Terran emperor of her origin in another universe. ( DIS : " Vaulting Ambition ")

The shared bond between Georgiou and Burnham provoked Burnham to bring the mirror Georgiou to the prime universe where she briefly took on the role of her deceased double as captain of the USS Discovery in 2257 . " Ensign Connor, agreement between my senior officers. Note the date and time. " " Noted, captain. "

" Hello, Michael. I hope that wherever this finds you, you are well. I imagine you have your own command now. The captain of your own ship. I have always tried to show you by example. The best way to know yourself is to know others. You are curious, an explorer. So I am leaving you my most beloved possession, handed down through my family for centuries. My hope is that you will use it to continue to investigate the mysteries of the universe, both inside and out, and keep your eyes and heart open always. Goodbye, Michael, and good luck. Know that I am as proud of you as if you were my own daughter. Take good care. But most importantly, take good care of those in your care. "

Background information [ ]

Philippa Georgiou was portrayed by Michelle Yeoh .

In November 2016 , it was reported that Yeoh had been cast as "Han Bo" [1] , rumored to be one of the show's two female leads – perhaps even a younger Number One . [2] Yeoh's character was soon identified as Captain of the Shenzhou [3] , before being renamed Philippa Georgiou.

To take on the part of Captain Georgiou, Michelle Yeoh relied on the help of the creative staff. " I worked very closely, " she recalled, " with Aaron (Harberts) and Gretchen (Berg) , our show runners, and then with David Semel (director of the pilot) and some of the writers that were here at that time, and Ted (Sullivan) , to get a feel of 'When you wrote this character, what were you thinking? Is she married? Does she have family? Does she have that?' Because it forms who she is. " [4]

Yeoh portrays Georgiou with her native Malaysian accent. [5] Her decision to do so was widely commented upon, and generally praised, in the Malaysian press. [6] [7] " Vaulting Ambition " writer Jordon Nardino , when theorizing on the connection between Empress Hoshi Sato and the mirror Georgiou , indicated that that Georgiou's background is Chinese-Malaysian [8] [9] [10] , like Yeoh herself.

According to Yeoh in an interview with SFX (issue 292, p. 80), Georgiou had seen the horrors of war. She went on to describe how her maintaining hope for Humanity figured in Sarek's decision to place Burnham with her. This closely mirrors something Georgiou said in the show; that Sarek put Burnham in her care because she still had hope despite a life of loss – suggesting these losses might be tied to said war experiences.

Apocrypha [ ]

The novel Desperate Hours states that Georgiou's surname was retained from her ex-husband Nikos Georgiou.

In the novel Drastic Measures , Georgiou was assigned to USS Narbonne ( β ) in 2246 , following the Tarsus IV crisis, She was assigned to the USS Defiant as Science officer .

LEILA FADEL, HOST:

Good morning. I'm Leila Fadel.

The long-lost original model of the USS Enterprise, the one that could be seen in the opening credits of the TV show "Star Trek," has been returned. Missing since the 1970s, the model popped up on eBay last fall. The seller eventually took down the item and helped facilitate its return to Rod Roddenberry, the son of the late "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry. Roddenberry, the son, says he now hopes to get the model into a museum for the public to enjoy.

It's MORNING EDITION.

To Boldly Return —

Long-lost model of the uss enterprise returned to roddenberry family, it showed up in an ebay listing; now roddenberry's son wants to show it to fans..

Samuel Axon - Apr 19, 2024 9:05 pm UTC

This mysterious model appeared on eBay with little fanfare.

The first-ever model of Star Trek's USS Enterprise NCC-1701 has been returned to the Roddenberry family, according to an ABC News report.

The 3-foot model was used to shoot the pilot and credits scene for Star Trek's original series in the 1960s and was used occasionally for shots throughout the series. (Typically, a larger, 11-foot model was used for shots after the pilot.) The model also sat on series creator Gene Roddenberry's desk for several years.

It went missing in the late 1970s; historians and collectors believe it belonged to Roddenberry himself, that he lent it to a production house working on Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and that it was never returned. Its whereabouts were unknown until last fall, when a listing for a mysterious model of the Enterprise appeared on eBay .

Further Reading

The eBay account that posted the item specialized in selling artifacts found in storage lockers that end up without an owner, either because of failure to pay or death.

The model appeared in this promotional image with Roddenberry.

The model was turned over by the eBay seller to Texas-based Heritage Auctions. News spread that it had been discovered, and Gene Roddenberry's son, Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry, made public statements that he would like to see it returned to his family.

After that, there were months of silence, and its fate was unknown—until now. Heritage Auctions announced that it had given the model to Rod Roddenberry. Details of the exchange have not been shared, but Roddenberry said he did compensate Heritage in some way.

Heritage reached out directly to Roddenberry upon acquiring the object and reportedly decided to return it because it was "the right thing to do." Roddenberry said that he "felt it important to reward that and show appreciation for that" but didn't disclose a sum.

Promotional images of the model with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.

Roddenberry also revealed what he has planned for the model:

This is not going home to adorn my shelves. This is going to get restored and we’re working on ways to get it out so the public can see it, and my hope is that it will land in a museum somewhere.

He runs a group called the Roddenberry Foundation that has scanned and digitized many relics from Star Trek's ideation and production over the years, so it's likely the Foundation will get a crack at the model, too.
