This surf adventure is for intermediate surfers and above. To join this surf trip you must be able to take off confidently and autonomously on shoulder / head-high waves. Almost all the waves break over (sometimes shallow) coral reef. Discover what's your surf level! ‍

SURF CONDITIONS

The Maldives surf season goes from April to October. Waves are incredibly consistent and while in Summer it may get big and sometimes a bit wet, the shoulder season (October and November) brings good weather and more playful conditions for the intermediate surfer. Since the Central Atolls take longer to reach, fewer boats operate in the area compared to the more crowded Male Atolls – which translates to fewer surfers in the line-up. Since most surfers heading to the Central Atolls are usually interested in more advanced waves, this often leaves other more intermediate spots (but still world-class) completely empty. This is the perfect recipe for a week of scoring incredible waves and improving your surfing skills. Recommended wetsuit ‍ No wetsuit is needed. We recommend bringing a rash vest for the sun, a surf hat, and reef booties.

HOW TO GET TO THE BOAT

In order to get to the boat you will have to fly to Male, Maldives . To get on the boat on time and leave to the Central Atolls on time, you will need to be in Malé before 12pm on arrival day. For the return you need to book a flight after 1pm on departure day . If you would like to arrive and depart a few days earlier/later to be able to settle in before the trip and chill down after, we recommend you to stay either in Himmafushi or Thulushdoo : both are close to Male (30min speed boat) and have quality surfing spots within walking distance! Once you booked the surf trip, we will keep updated on the WhatsApp group chat !

By public transportation: ‍ To get to the surf house you will have to follow the following steps (the whole trip takes around 3 hours): 1 - Uber/ Pickme from Bandaranaike International Airport to Kadawatha Bus Station  – around 18€ 2 - Bus from Kadawatha Station to Galle Bus Station ( 2h) – around 6€ 3 - Taxi from Galle Bus Station to Ahangama – around 18 €     ‍ By private transfer: ‍ From the Airport we can organize a transfer directly to the surf house - 65€ per way per car

Surf conditions

The centre of the south coast of Sri Lanka surf scene stretches from Hikkaduwa to Welligama with differentwaves for all surf levels. Kabalana beach, the spot in front of the surf house, is right in the middle of this coast and offers fun beginners' waves with multiple peeling peaks. During the quiet swell period of December to March, waist to head-high waves are common and you can often find glassy and dreamy conditions.

Rcommended wetsuit ‍ Wetsuit not needed. Bring a surf hat to protect yourself from the sun.

Payment/Credit Arrangements: ‍ 30% of the total should be paid to confirm your booking (non-refundable deposit) within 7 days of your confirmation. The remaining 70% must be paid no later than 60 days before departure. Otherwise, the reservation will be considered void. ‍ Cancellation Policy: ‍ Cancellations will be subject to the following fees: ‍ - after booking confirmation: 30% of the total amount (non-refundable deposit) - within 45 days before the travel start date: 50% of the total amount - within 30 days before the travel start date: 80% of the total amount - within 15 days before the start of the trip: 100% of the total amount Minimum number of participants / confirmation of the surf boat trip: ‍ The surf trip will be confirmed with a minimum number of 10 participants and 45 days prior to departure. ‍ If the surf trip is not confirmed from our side because of a lack of participants, it will be possible to move your booking to a later date or to get a refund to your bank account or credit card (according to your payment method) of the initial deposit and total amount paid. Stay Madivaru is a locally built 25m teakwood boat which has been completely refurbished in 2015, assuring complete comfort to its passengers. ‍ With its spacious deck, comfortable double cabins and a team of professional locals on hand, this is the perfect boat to hunt for waves: every day you will jump on the Dhoni (a smaller boat with a surf rack) that will support us while we're surfing from sunrise to sunset with a local guide. The large saloon is furnished with comfortable sofas perfect to hide from the sun in the warmest hours of the day. For the sun lovers, the sundeck is located above the saloon and furnished with both sundeck chairs and sun beds. Inside the boat, you will find six comfortable cabins, four twin and two double cabins which are fully air-conditioned with individual thermostat control, en-suite shower and WC. ‍ Spend 10 days with a view of the Indian Ocean all around you. The Boat's maximum capacity is 12 guests + 1 or 2 The Surf Tribe group leader(s).

Stay Madivaru is a locally built 25m teakwood boat which has been completely refurbished in 2015, assuring complete comfort to its passengers. ‍ With its spacious deck, comfortable double cabins and a team of professional locals on hand, this is the perfect boat to hunt for waves: every day you will jump on the Dhoni (a smaller boat with a surf rack) that will support us while we're surfing from sunrise to sunset with a local guide. Inside the boat, you will find six comfortable cabins, four twin and two double cabins which are fully air-conditioned with individual thermostat control, en-suite shower and WC. ‍ Spend 10 days with a view of the Indian Ocean all around you. The Maldives is home to what many intermediate surfers would qualify as “the most enjoyable waves on earth.” This surf coaching retreat takes place in the remote & unspoiled Central Atolls.

A typical day

You wake up in your private room in the beautiful surf boat, exclusive to your small group of intermediate surfers. The view outside is breathtaking: white sand beaches, palm trees, crystal-clear lagoons, and perfect fun-sized waves. You surf for 3 hours, taking turns on long peeling waves with just a few of your new friends out. Back on the boat, you watch surfing videos of your session with your surf coach to know how to improve your cutbacks and bottom turns. After lunch, you go for a quick snorkel around the mind-blowing coral reefs. Later you go for an epic sunset surf session and catch some of the best wave of your life. Your day ends surrounded by great people with a delicious Maldivian beach BBQ and a few cold drinks.

The Central Atolls (Meemu, Thaa, Dhaalu and Laamu) are the ideal location to surf uncrowded high-quality waves. Only a few surf charters operate in this secluded and idyllic location. Not only is this area usually less crowded, it also picks up swells from different directions and offers shelter from most wind directions. If there is one place where you can find never-ending playful waves without many surfers out, this is it!

The Surf Boat

Explore the Central Atolls in style & comfort. You will be living on a chic 36-meter boat built from fine tropical timber and custom-designed to chase waves. This massive boat has plenty of different social areas, hang out spots and relaxing spaces for each surfer in our small group of 10.

Is this trip for me?

This is an “intermediate” only surf trip. You need to have a minimum of experience to truly enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

You can join this trip if:

• You can catch unbroken waves by yourself
• You can angle your take off to go either left or right
• You can draw your line on a “green wave” with a minimum of control
• You feel comfortable in shoulder-to-head-high waves
• You’re an intermediate surfer wishing to surf epic waves while progressing to the next level

This trip is not for you if:

• You have never tried surfing
• You surfed a few days in the past but still struggle with your take-off
• You are a very advanced surfer looking for 12-feet grinding barrels over shallow reef*

*To provide a personalized surfing experience, we do not take very advanced surfers on this trip as it would compromise our ability to provide a unique, customized service.

Our team would be very thrilled if we could help intermediate-to-advanced surfers get some of their first barrels, but if you have the level to ride massive, hollow barrels, other charter boat services would be a better option.

Surf information

No need for a wetsuit here, the average water temperature is 28°C/82°F, year-round! The surf season in the Maldives is generally considered to be from April to October. The best time of the year to surf in Central Atolls is either March & April or September & October. This is when the surfing conditions and winds are optimal. By offering our retreats in October, we avoid the busiest time of the year, which tends to be from June to August in the Maldives.

The surf breaks around the Central Atolls are amongst the most remote and picturesque, providing the incredible feeling of living around a secluded island that delivers exceptional wave quality.

With its many sheltered spots that receive less swell, it is the dream destination for intermediates to progress their surfing on long, playful waves. There are only a few charter boats operating in the Central Atolls. This leaves many intermediate spots with minimal crowds, even though they deliver world-class quality (just not as much power and consequence!).

Three sumptuous all-you-can-eat meals per day are included, with unlimited snacks when you are hungry. The food is a mixture of Maldivian, Sri Lankan and Western dishes. The chefs can adjust to suit special diets when required.

• You must bring your own surfboards, at least two.
• Maximum sized surfboards for domestic flights in the Maldives is 8 ft.
• Our prices are per person and in US dollars. Taxes, service fees and contributions to the FICAV are included.

• International flight tickets are not included (only the domestic ones are).
• Please wait 120 days before the surf trip before buying international flights to Male. Domestic flight schedules may change, wait for our confirmation.
• Travel insurance is not included and is mandatory.
• Your passport must be valid for 6 months from the date of your departure.

Core Travel Company, an Australian company, has been operating safaris in Maldives for 22 years, their experience in the safari business is unrivalled with Brian James at the helm. Good boats, good owners, good crews, good guides, good food and of course, good surf. Choose the isolation of the Central Atolls or the always pumping Male Atolls and you get the holiday dreams are made of.

I just wanted to start by saying, the experience & knowledge of Brian, Jarro and their team, is just amazing.

Knowing Brian has close to 25 years experience in the Maldives, running surf trips, & even writing a book on history of Maldives, including spots, pioneers, and history.

Jarro has also a wealth of knowledge approximately 20 years. They have such in depth knowledge of the Maldives not only the spots, swell directions, conditions, giving you the ultimate trip & experience. Both Brian and Jarro are very highly respected by many of the other companies & surf guides whom have been there for along time. Even if surf is not firing he and his team will just come up with a island visit or fishing, or find where the next spot that will light up and move the boat there ready. I’m no fisherman but have caught GT’s, Tuna, Wahoo, Red Sea Bass (I reckon it was a Coral Trout, haha)

I have travelled to many exotic places (including boats, camps, off the beaten tracks) some are now getting well known, but others are still yet too be discovered by the mainstream throughout Pacific and Indian Ocean but Maldives, is truly, one of the most amazing places and is like a giant aquarium and wonderland. I have done a few trips with these guys, and honestly after the experiences with them, I have returned every year. Passing on my experiences to many friends/family/work colleagues, whom are also now booking with these guys too.

I cannot speak highly enough of these guys, but honestly I didn’t want the word to get out how good Maldives is, but if you want the best company and experiences chat with Brian or Jarro or their team.

I have travelled with Brian on several safaris dating back to 2003. First with Core Travel in the early days and more recently with him on the luxury safari, Carpe Vita with a group hosted by Bob McTavish, a real memorable trip with great waves and great friendships made.

All safaris have been far from the busy areas and Brian’s knowledge of these remote surfing points gives surfers the edge over the fleet. The name of the game in Central and Southern Atolls is one boat with friends surfing perfect waves with no one else in sight. Brian does his utmost to achieve this goal.

Forget the beach: How you can experience the real Maldives

I was on a boat in the middle of the Indian Ocean, about to taste real life in the Maldives .

A crew of fishermen from Sun Siyam Iru Veli , located in the Dhaalu Atoll, set up the fishing lines. We were anchored off the shores of the nearby local island Bandidhoo, where people fish tuna for money and smaller reef fish for their tables. 

The task seemed simple enough: bait attached to a hook tied to the end of a fishing line, which I was to hold by hand. As the line dropped to the reef, I was to wait for the feel of a fish nibbling on the bait. Then I’d just pull the line by hand, and voilà: a catch. No poles or spears required. 

Long-line fishing is a generations-old tradition in the Maldives, a way of life for its people. Living in an island nation where not much grows, Maldivians sustain themselves off of fish and coconuts. Not only is it an ancient practice, but long-line fishing is sustainable, taking just a few fish at a time with minimal damage to coral reefs or bycatch. 

I quickly learned that I was not a natural long-line fisher. For the next hour, I mistook the moving current for a gullible fish when I was actually the gullible one. Other times, the fish was stealthy enough to take the bait without me feeling anything at all.

Instead, I watched the fishermen work their magic. The line danced in their hands, flying up and down. Sensitive to the slightest movement going on 65 feet underwater, they knew the exact moment to start pulling the line up and win the battle against the fish. 

As the sun set over the water, we caught a total of nine fish, including emperor fish, batfish and humpback snapper. 

Although the rest of the fish went to the fishermen to enjoy at home, one snapper would make a reappearance the following day. For lunch, I enjoyed the red snapper, grilled to perfection and sliced raw into sashimi. 

While the Maldives is renowned as a romantic, luxurious destination where people can enjoy the sunshine, soft white sand and gentle lapping turquoise waters, it’s also packed with history and culture. While everyone should spend some time relaxing at the beach , the atoll nation offers way more for travelers to do – and learn more about life in the Maldives. 

Like most things in the Maldives, most activities are unfortunately pricey, especially since booking through a resort is pretty much your only option.

Long-line fishing is just the beginning. Here are eight other activities in the Maldives beyond simply lounging on the beach.

Go fish, Maldivian-style

Sunset fishing was hands-down my favorite excursion in the Maldives. Watching the fishermen in action was exhilarating, even though I couldn’t get the long line fishing down myself. Partaking in the ancient fishing tradition was a peek into real Maldivian life – and against the most gorgeous of backdrops: the sun setting over the ocean. To pick which fish to eat the next day and how it would be prepared made the experience extra rewarding.  

Check out the marine life

The Maldives is rich in marine biodiversity. Guests can snorkel and dive with whale sharks in southern waters and alongside manta rays in the north. At Sun Siyam Iru Veli, I went on an afternoon snorkeling tour, a 20-minute boat ride from the resort, and swam along the reef, an uninhabited island. Dropping about 100 feet, the reef was overflowing with marine life. I spotted a plethora of tropical reef fish along with three Hawksbill turtles – the most common type in the Maldives – and a white-tip reef shark. 

Even on resort grounds, travelers have plenty of opportunities to easily witness marine life – I spotted a pod of dolphins swim past me on my sunset fishing excursion and baby reef sharks around the shoreline by my villa at Sun Siyam Iru Veli in the mornings.

Explore the ocean … at night

Most resorts in the Maldives also have a house reef, where colorful clownfish and triggerfish swim around anemones and soft coral. At Sun Siyam Iru Fushi , guests can request a nighttime snorkeling activity, where they dive in after the sun sets to see the reef in another light, literally. 

The gear was simple. I slipped an orange filter over my snorkel mask, secured with a band, to eliminate the fluorescence caused by my blue light flashlight. This light source would make all the difference, as the soft coral and anemones absorbed the blue light, casting neon greens and reds back. The bright red anemones swayed in the dark and soft coral glowed, showcasing intricate brain-like textures and patterns not noticeable in daylight. 

Help restore some coral

Coral reefs play a critical role in the very existence of the Maldives; without them, the islands would be damaged by strong waves. Maldivians also rely on the fish from reefs for their livelihoods. Guests can participate in coral restoration alongside on-staff marine biologists at multiple Sun Siyam Resorts with coral planting. In this activity, I fastened coral fragments to a metal frame that’s later placed in the ocean to hopefully regrow and thrive. 

Visit a local island 

Sun Siyam Resorts offers travelers the chance to get off the resort island and witness everyday life for Maldivians. Guests can sign up for a local island tour, which takes them to a local fishing village to meet community members and see the school and local shops. I went on a local farm tour, where I got to see how some of the produce, such as papaya, that’s served in the resorts are grown. 

Watersports galore

In the Maldives, the ocean is the main attraction. Siyam World Maldives way offers more than the typical jet skis, paddleboards and kayaks. Guests of all ages can clamber around on the Indian Ocean’s biggest floating waterpark, made up of inflatable obstacles. There are also electric surfboards, kite surfing, banana boats and underwater jetpacks. I rented a seabob, a diving scooter that let me glide up and down underwater like a dolphin at up to 13 miles per hour. It was a strange sensation, but definitely took snorkeling to the next level. 

Visit an uninhabited private island

Over 83% of the Maldives’ 1,192 islands are uninhabited, allowing travelers to bask in unspoiled tropical landscapes. At Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, I was able to enjoy untouched nature and be the only present human there. Sun Siyam Iru Fushi and its sister resort, Siyam World, also share a small private island where only palm trees exist (and a restroom facility, so don’t worry about that). Guests can book the private island for picnics and photoshoots, which willand it’ll be exclusively theirs for the entire time. During the picnic, staff set up a tent for respite from the afternoon sun and served lunch and even champagne. No roughing it here.

Every Friday night at Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, Maldivian staff share a piece of their culture with guests through traditional song and dance – of course, guests are invited to learn the dance, too. In Boduberu , dancers move energetically to the beat of coconut drums and folk singing. The dancing style is said to have come from African sailors who reached the Maldives many centuries ago, and is typically performed at special occasions and celebrations. The resort also offers cooking classes, where guests can learn how to make traditional Maldivian dishes, and free workshops such as making your own coconut oil, a staple product for cooking in the country.
