What are the Best Pre-Cruise Port Hotels in Tampa Bay
Table of Contents
Introduction
Looking for the best pre-cruise hotels near the Port of Tampa Bay, perhaps with park and cruise packages, airport and cruise port shuttles, affordable rates, and close to restaurants and bars?
In this series of articles, we explore the best cruise hotels in Tampa Bay.
Map of Popular Hotel Clusters near Port of Tampa Bay
In the map below, I highlight 5 popular hotel areas. Each area offers something different, from lower prices to bustling nightlife, to free airport shuttles. Let’s look at each area to help you decide where to stay!
Google Map of Port Tampa Bay
You can view the locations of hotels on Google Maps below. When you select a hotel, you will see photos and a description of important amenities for cruise guests such as breakfast, parking, airport, and cruise port shuttle options.
Airport Hotels Cluster
There are 25+ hotels close to Tampa International Airport in an area known as Westshore. Rates are generally lower than the Downtown hotels yet you are only 20 minutes from the cruise terminals! Most airport hotels offer free shuttles from the airport but shuttles to the cruise port are not available.
The area is business-like and quite nice. It is spread out and you may or may not be within walking distance of restaurants and/or shopping (International Plaza Mall for example). If you are willing to use rideshare, you can dine at fine establishments, and browse upscale shopping malls.
There are too many hotels to discuss here but you can see photos, descriptions, and information about shuttles on my Google Maps above. Just click on each hotel icon.
Average Rideshare Fares from this area to Port Tampa Bay

West Tampa Hotels Cluster
There are only a few hotels between the airport area and Downtown. I call this West Tampa but in reality, there are three hotels in South Tampa and two near Historic Hyde Park.
The South Tampa hotels (about 15 minutes from the Port) are affordable and near strip malls with typical shops and small restaurants.

Historic Hyde Park (about 10 minutes from the Port) is quaint and upscale but unfortunately, there are only two hotels.
Epicurean Hotel
Airport Shuttle – No, Valet Parking – $20, Breakfast – $30, Port Shuttle – No
The hotel is near a few restaurants but it is isolated and nowhere near quaint Hyde Park Village. The hotel has several onsite restaurants.
Hyde Park Hotel
Airport Shuttle – No, Parking – FREE, Breakfast – No, Cruise Shuttle – No
The hotel is near a few restaurants but it is isolated and nowhere near quaint Hyde Park Village.
Downtown Hotels Cluster
Downtown Tampa is fun and popular and safe. While most visitors congregate channel side near Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park, there are also several nice hotels in the central business district. At this time, the Channel District closest to the Port has two hotels.
Getting around is easy thanks to the free TECO Line streetcars.
I group this cluster of hotels into 3 areas – Channel District, Channelside, and Downtown.
- UberX – $7
- UberXL – $10
Hampton Inn
Channel District. Dual-brand property with Home2suites. Free Hot Breakfast. Parking – $25 per day. Cruise Parking is available – book with Parkway Parking – $12 daily. FREE cruise shuttle. Historic Ybor City Hotels Cluster
Lively Ybor City is known for boutiques and vintage shops on 7th Avenue, which also hosts cigar bars, nightclubs, and Cuban and Latin American eateries.
This is my recommended place to stay for a good time before your cruise! The three hotels are just an easy walk from all the action.
If you travel light, you can even hop on a free TECO Line streetcar for a short ride to your cruise terminal! Just know that the streetcars are packed on certain weekends with little room for large suitcases.
- UberXL – $11
Hilton Garden Inn
Breakfast costs extra – $13. Parking – $18 per night. Compare the Snooze and Cruise Package with free parking and breakfast for 2
No airport shuttle, Valet parking only – $35 per night, breakfast extra, no port shuttle, Free streetcar station behind the hotel
Free Hot Breakfast, Parking – $25 a night, Free shuttle to Port of Tampa, Free streetcar station across the road, no airport shuttle
Ybor City Hotels Cluster
A few miles east of Historic Ybor City is a cluster of several hotels for budget-minded cruisers.
The area appears run down with several gas stations, a few fast-food restaurants, and not much else but it is only 15 minutes from the cruise terminals. To be safe, ignore the strange characters roaming the parking lots and avoid walking the streets after dark.
- UberX – $11
I recommend only two hotels in this area.
Quality Inn & Suites
Free parking. Continental breakfast. Free shuttle to the Port. Stay Park and Cruise Package allow 14 days of surface parking with shuttles. (Cruise parking is roughly $11 per night)
Holiday Inn Express
Free parking. Hot breakfast. Free shuttle to the Port. Stay and Cruise Package allows 14 days of surface parking with shuttles.

Pre-Cruise Hotel In Tampa – Holiday Inn Westshore
Sharing is caring!
Looking for a pre-cruise hotel in Tampa? Good for you! Tampa is such an easy port to cruise from and you’ll get the amazing Skyway Bridge experience! There are many great choices but we recently stayed at the Holiday Inn Westshore and it has a lot to offer.
If you are in the IHG loyalty family the Holiday Inn Westshore should be on your shortlist of pre-cruise hotel options for Tampa.
The Key to any great pre-cruise hotel is Convenience
First, the location is quite convenient. It’s a quick shuttle ride from the airport (approximately 5 minutes). Additionally, there are several conveniences close by.
If you’ve packed carry-on only and want to pick up toiletries, sunscreen, or even a couple of bottles of wine , there are options nearby. Directly across the road from the hotel is a 24-hour convenience store with a Subway sandwich shop inside. There is also a Publix nearby as well.
The Holiday Inn Westshore is also conveniently located between two shopping malls. During our visit, we met a local friend for dinner at one International Plaza. It was a very popular place even on a Wednesday evening and draws a large crowd on weekends. However, if high-end shopping and great restaurants are your things, definitely head to International Plaza. If you have nice weather and are up for a walk, it’s only about a mile or so from the hotel.
Hotel Shuttle Service – BONUS
The hotel shuttle service was a wonderful surprise. While we are frequent Uber users, we opted for the free airport to hotel shuttle service. Once we arrived at the hotel and checked in, I asked for directions to International Plaza and they offered to shuttle us there! This was a huge win because it was rush hour and the Uber fee was going to be $28 (to go approx. 1-1.5 miles!).
When he dropped us off, he said, “Just call and I’ll come back and get you”. The next morning, it was pouring and the shuttle driver took us down the block to First Watch for a nice breakfast. Even though we tipped each time, the cost didn’t come close to what it would have been for Uber.
Additional Conveniences
The hotel lobby featured a bar area with plenty of seating. There was also a little snack nook where guests could purchase drinks and snacks. The hotel also offered the usual expected amenities such as a pool and fitness center. The website also mentions a laundry facility although I did not see that during our short visit. I remember days of traveling with little ones when an on-site laundry room would have come in VERY handy!
Any Cons to our Pre-Cruise Hotel in Tampa?
Our only negative about this experience was the lack of available coffee, etc. early in the morning. Our room did have a Keurig machine but there wasn’t coffee readily available in the lobby like at many hotels. My husband gets up very early to get in a couple of hours of work before we set sail. He usually goes to the lobby to work so that I can sleep in. (He’s a keeper!) Typically if we stay in the IHG brand we select a Holiday Inn Express location that offers complimentary breakfast and always has coffee available in the lobby. This is a very minor “complaint” and did not take away from our experience. Instead, we took the opportunity to go down the block and have a wonderful breakfast experience at First Watch. Their avocado toast is so good!
I will also mention that there are a few “gentlemen’s clubs” on this block. There aren’t any large billboards or anything inappropriate street-facing. In fact, if you didn’t read the name on the building you likely wouldn’t even notice.
If you’ve been a loyal reader of my blog you know that I almost always book pre-cruise hotels with points earned from travel reward credit cards. This visit was no different. When compared to the price (or quantity of points) per night, an airport location was much more affordable than a hotel located in downtown Tampa. Depending on the time of year and day of the week, this hotel was approximately 25% less than its downtown alternatives. So, it was definitely the right choice for us!
Worrier’s Guide:
- Yes, kids, there’s a pool!
- Nice and clean with a friendly staff
- Hotel shuttle service for the win!
There you have it, cruise friends! My pick for a great pre-cruise hotel in Tampa.

No one else has replied so I'll bite.
For locations near the cruise port I would suggest staying either in Downtown Tampa or Ybor City .

The airport and the cruise port are not near to each other.
The taxi ride from the airport downtown is $25.00. Some people have had luck bidding on Priceline and getting a great price on a downtown Tampa hotel near the cruise port. Maybe if you get a cheap enough price on a hotel the $25.00 taxi fare will be within your budget.
there is also a big parking garage right there acrosse fromthe port for the people who drive to the port to board. The port is also right next to the Florida Aquarium which is great! They have shops there and an IMAX theatre at Channel side. Good food at Channel side and bowling.
I'm sure the hotel will offer a shuttle to the port, just ask them before booking. As for the airport shuttles...don't know, but a taxi isn't far, maybe $20 to get there. Reserve it ahead of time to get a good rate.
try the Renaissance at International Plaza....nice area, close to places to eat and I believe has a shuttle.

We cruised in October, and stayed in the Chase Suites Hotel. They have a complimentary shuttle to and from the Port.
We had to get a cab originally from the airport to the hotel-but I hadn't contacted the Chase to ask about a shuttle at that point. This was because we'd booked through an agent for our one night stay.
I'd stay there again-really nice driver too!!!!

There's not much to this hotel, little lobby, nice room though, and a small pool, but at this time of year it would be too cold to swim in anyways. It's a Hampton inn so you know it's nice. I stay in Hampton Inns becasue there's no surprises, rooms are nice, and free wi-fi, and I collect their points through Hilton Honors.
The other good things are that right out the door is Ybor City. Night life and daytime boutique shops. Stuff for the kids to do like a gaming zone. I can't recall the name of it but it's by the movie theatre.Yyou buy a passes (wrist bands) and the kids can game for hours. Then there's the Tram that will bring you down the street to the port and it run every half hour or less. Very inexpensive to ride it to.
Hope this helps.

Tampa Hotel Recommendations

We will be departing from Port of Tampa in November, 2020, maybe.
We are looking at 2 hotels for our pre and post cruise stay.
You read lots of reviews and don't know what to make of them.
Anyway, the 2 hotels are the Hyatt Place Cruise Port/Airport Westshore and the Quality Inn & Suites Fairgrounds Ybor City.
If you read the reviews and believe them they are both very good, I have stayed at Hyatts around the world and have been impressed, don't know about Quality Inn.
Anyone have any experience with these hotels ?

Haven't stayed at either one, but my choice would be Ybor City. Close to the pier, and aquarium. Lots of bars and restaurants, including the Columbia.

If it were me I would choose the Westshore area. I have read multiple reviews from some of the locals who say the Fairground area is not a good area.

Bumping this message back to the top. I am guessing my friend from that "state up north" didn't cruise, but I'm getting hopeful that we will cruise this Sept. We want to arrive in the early afternoon Sept 3rd, stay close to the port with a clean room and probably a pool, somewhere to eat nearby, but we will have a car. I hope they are still doing the valet parking at the port. Or perhaps more correctly they will be doing it again.

What terminal? I wouldn't have chosen any of those hotels. I'd be at the Tampa Marriott Water Street (JW Marriott Water Street if I wanted more upscale), Hyatt House Downtown, Hyatt Place Downtown and Hilton Tampa Downtown, for starters.
Look at hotels in the Rocky Point area, near TPA. Many hotels there offer both airport and port shuttles, or parking packages if needed. Nice area on the bay with several good nearby dining options. We stayed at Chase Suites a few years ago and were happy 😎
I ended up booking the Four Points Sheraton about 5 miles from the port. It feels good to be cruise planning again.
I originally booked Sailport Waterfront Suites for our Nov. cruise on the Constellation, as reviews were very good. But started getting bad reviews, so cancelled the reservation and booked Marriott Water Street.

My cruise on Brilliance was supposed to be the first in its return to cruising. It didn't happen, got my fingers crossed for the next one.
Good Luck @BillOh
This will be our first cruise since Celebrity cancelled our 03/15/20 cruise less than 24 hours prior to embarkation...

Wow, one one hand, thanks for the reminder, we may give Celebrity a try next year. On a related note, our friends were on tarmac at Port Columbus being de-iced 2 weeks ago when they got a text saying their Serenade cruise was canceled. Ended up driving to Port Canaveral and getting on Mariner.

Cruising from Tampa in March 2022. I want to book a hotel for the night before and the night after the cruise. We will NOT be renting a car. Finding a shuttle from the airport to the hotel has been easy, but would also like to find one with a shuttle to the pier. Searching the travel sites (Hotels, Priceline, etc) is not really easy to find that. Can anyone recommend such a hotel, or is it better to book through the cruise line (NCL in this case)?

Pre-virus Chase Suites and a few other hotels in the Rocky Point area offered both airport and port shuttles - check them out!

Cruising from Tampa December'22 and have booked the Quality Inn Airport-Cruise Port.
This hotel has a free pick up shuttle from the Airport and a shuttle to cruise port for a small fee.
Anybody stayed in this hotel? If so, how were the services and amenities etc.

I have not and would not. I don't general book Quality Inns because I find them lacking in "quality". This one seems no exception. It gets very mediocre reviews on TripAdvisor, Google and Yelp. It also isn't especially close to the cruise port or in an especially attractive neighborhood. I'd be more inclined to book a place like the Hampton Inn Tampa Downtown Channel District, which is about the same price tier as the Quality Inn.

Absolutely agree
In March stayed at Hampton Inn Airport/Rocky Point and free shuttle to and from airport and very close to airport, they have a shuttle to and from cruise port for $12 and was very efficient. One of the best things is Bahama Breeze is 5 minute walk and has nice view of water, plus you can go to their website and make a reservation and this is important because this is a popular place but enjoyed it very much. Victoria and Krystal at front desk at Hampton Inn are friendly and very helpful. I enjoyed my stay.

A company is turning former cruise ships into floating hotels — see inside its largest 'floatel'
- Bridgemans ServicesGroup operates a fleet of former cruise ships turned into hotels.
- Its "floatels" are designed to house workers during long-term projects.
- See its largest 652-cabin floatel with a game room and buffet.
Some old and unwanted cruise ships meet their demise at ship-breaking yards , where they are disassembled and sold for scrap.
Other vessels find a more fortunate fate, receiving a second chance to do what they already do best: serve as floating hotels.
Canada-based Bridgemans Services Group buys and charters former cruise ships to turn into "floatels," outfitted with standard cruise amenities like daily housekeeping, buffets, and relaxing lounges.
But the ships aren't designed to transport tourists from one destination to another anymore. Instead, companies turn to Bridgeman when they need to house workers for a long-term project, whether it be the construction of an offshore wind farm in Europe or the shooting of a major film in a remote destination.
Floatels can accommodate workers in remote destinations where hotels might not be an option.
In more metropolitan areas, Bridgemans says its ships could lessen the stress an inundation of workers might have on the local housing market.
And once they are no longer needed, the vessels depart and "leave no trace behind," the company said.
Over the last decade, Bridgemans has deployed its ships for 15 projects on every continent, Brian Grange, the company's president, told Business Insider.
Grange said that its deployments — most often for liquified natural gas companies — last for an average of two years.
In the past, it has also provided accommodations for MSC Cruises at its Ocean Cay private island and housing for more than 1,000 workers in the Philippines' on a project for the Manila International Airport during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The company's three ships range from 150 to 652 cabins.
The floatel operator acquired its largest ship, the 561-foot-long MV Isabelle X, in 2023.
In its past life, the 35-year-old vessel sailed around the Baltic Sea as one of Estonia-based Tallink Gruipp's cruise ships.
But gone are its days of leisurely cruising. The 35,000 gross-ton ship is now on its first deployment in Howe Sound, just north of Vancouver, where it's housing more than 600 workers who are building Woodfibre LNG's "net zero" LNG export facility.
Isabelle X underwent a six-month retrofit before it was sent to Howe Sound.
The process included updating the ship's cabins and adding amenities like a game room and an 8,000-square-foot gym.
The latter two are especially important: "We need to make sure we delineate between work and home," Grange told BI. "We have to create a social environment on board these vessels that makes it attractive for workforces around the world."
During their free time, workers can play billiards, relax in the outdoor lounge, or use the ship’s WiFi to catch up on social media.
The sports lounge has large television screens, while the games lounge has darts, ping pong tables, and air hockey.
The 'quiet lounges' are the go-to space for people who need to unwind after a long work day.
Or, they could recharge and catch up on the latest shows in their cabins, which all come with desks, storage, and 32-inch televisions.
Like a typical cruise ship, Bridgemans' vessels have buffets with live cooking stations, a dessert bar, and the occasional themed night.
The ships' chefs tailor their menus to the demographic and dietary restrictions of the workers on board, the company's president told BI.
Residents can expect at least four protein options, plenty of veggies, and handmade bread and desserts.
Unlike most cruise lines, Bridgemans can pre-purchase all the food it needs before deployment.
Grange says this allows the ships to maintain food quality and consistency in remote locations.
Remember that deployment in the Philippines during COVID-19? He said the ship had packed almost 800 tons of food ahead of the project.
He wouldn’t disclose the cost to rent one of Bridgemans’ floatels.
But he did note that the cost of a cabin on the Woodfibre LNG project in Howe Sound is comparable to a hotel room in nearby Vancouver, as is the case with most of its projects near major cities.
The company’s most recent acquisition, the 150-cabin Diamond XI, is currently being retrofitted and would be ready for deployment this year.
According to the company's president, the vessel is small and high-end, likely to be used for sporting events and movie shoots.
It could also be the start of a greater expansion: He hopes to add two or three more vessels to its fleet in the next five years.
"The world has opened up to this as a valued alternative to housing," Grange told BI.
Who knows, the next time you see a cruise ship off the coast, there's a slim but possible chance it could be housing workers — not vacationers.
