Tourist Trap Mysteries Books In Order

Publication order of tourist trap mysteries books.

The A Tourist Trap Mystery series is among the best of mystery and crime thriller series written by popular American author Lynn Cahoon. While Cahoon has mainly been known to write in the science fiction and romance genres, she is just as good if not better in writing a crime thrillers. The Tourist Trap Mysteries has 9 books, the first of which was published in 2014. The main character in the 9 works is Jill Gardner, the owner of a small Book and Coffee shop in South Cove a residential tourist town in California. In her first appearance, we see her as a local coffee shop owner who just cannot seem to keep her nose out of the troubles and complications in her little tourist city. Over the course of the novel, her nosy can’t keep out of people’s business attitude sees her get involved in a lot of murders as an amateur detective, seeking absolution or justice for herself, associates and her friends implicated in murders. One of the very important characters in the novels is Detective Greg King, who starts out as Jill Gardner’s love interest and ends up as her boyfriend, lover, and unofficial detective partner. Her passion for finding her and solving frequently make her a target for the psychotic criminals, which from time to time puts her under suspicion even from her detective boyfriend.

As the most popular of Lynn Cahoon’s novels, the Tourist Trap mystery series has fans all across the world. The first novel in the series, Guidebook to Murder was so popular among audiences in the US and Europe that it went on to win several awards after its publication. What made the series so popular is that it takes elements from different genres to form the explosive narratives of the Tourist Trap Mysteries. An accomplished romance novel writer, she takes the features of the romance novel by introducing a handsome Detective Greg, to the murder, and politics of a crime mystery in the making of a cozy murder mystery series. The first novel of the series came out in 2014 and introduced a new kind of novel into the public domain – the Cozy Mystery. Becoming an almost instantaneous success, the novel was the winner of the 2015 Reader’s Crown Prize as the year’s Best Mystery Fiction. Given that the author has been publishing one book in the series each year since the first came out in 2014, it is highly likely that she will continue doing so for the foreseeable future. Lynn says that publishing a new novel in the series is like going back home to South Cove, which is why she likes publishing one every year.

Jill Gardner has one of the weirdest descriptions that one could have for the chief protagonist of a mystery novel. Lynn Cahoon describes her as a down to earth, but nosy neighbor that just cannot seem to stay away from mysteries in her hometown – particularly murder mysteries, which always seem to find her. She is the owner and operator of a small coffee shop known as Coffee, Books, and More. While initially single, she has a huge crush on Greg King a dashing detective and part time barista, who later becomes her sleuthing partner. Jill Gardner is a tenacious and surprisingly passionate amateur detective that just cannot seem to stop once she sets her mind to solve a mystery. Despite her family, her boyfriend, associates, and even her targets repeatedly warning her off when she took on huge risks, all she cares about is her cause for justice and solving her puzzles. The series draws us into the murky world of political rivalry, murder, romance, and corruption, which provide for some knife-edge tension and thrill, which only the cozy mysteries of Lynn Cahoon can provide.

The first novel in the A Tourist Trap Mystery series introduces Jill Gardner an employee of the Chamber of Commerce and owner of a coffee shop in South Cove, California. Miss Emily an elderly friend of hers turns up dead soon after getting a threatening letter from the city council. Jill suspects something fishy. She soon finds that she is the heir of Miss Emily’s estate and that her friend had been murdered as she had suspected. She now has to keep the city from destroying her new home and try to solve a murder while trying to tone down her feelings for the handsome Detective Greg King who might also be a married man. Cahoon does a good job of making Jill central to the investigation by making her friends with Greg King rather than try to convince us of her rookie talents. The Minor characters and subplots that, Lynn introduces are likable and for the most part interesting, dovetailing nicely into the main plot of the novel. It is a fun and entertaining mystery, particularly since the murderer remained a surprise right to the end of the book, which is not something you will find in many cozy mysteries.

The second novel of the Tourist Trap Mystery series is Mission to Murder. In this novel, Jill Gardner is on a mission to get the stonewall of her home declared part of an historic mission that had been resident in the area a few decades back. Expecting a lot of opposition from a bureaucrat that did not like to split the tourism budget, she is shocked when he turns up dead. She is now the main suspect in the murder having publicly threatened him publicly a few hours before. It is now up to her detective boyfriend to find the murderer or evidence to clear her name. Lynn Cahoon has really upped her game with this one, with great communication between Jill and Greg, and a well-paced mystery. Jill is more involved with the bookstore and the banter about running the bookstore makes for some good reading. Having two aspects to the mystery – the documentation of the stonewall and the murder mystery make for a very good balance of the less serious and the daily happenings at the bookstore and library. Overall, this interesting and fun read with interesting subplots and characters will leave you wanting more.

I LOVE this series, I loved the first series as well with her trusty poodle helping to solve her mysteries but Jill takes the cake along with her partner Greg and girlfriend. Dont stop this series ever, please. It is hard waiting for a new book as I read them so fast.

I love the Tourist Trap Mystery series. I couldn’t put the book down until the end. I love the characters and the small town. You feel like you know these characters as friends in your own town. I am so eager to read the next book PICTURE PERFECT FRAME in March 2022.

Olive You to Death

Coming june 4th, 2024.

In the coastal town of South Cove, June is tourist season—and wedding season. Unfortunately, Jill Gardner’s own wedding has been delayed. But that just gives her more time to search for a missing bride—and a killer . . .

Things are looking up for the owner of Coffee, Books, and More—Jill’s finally getting her MBA, and though her wedding to police detective Greg is postponed a few months, she still has plenty to celebrate. A girls’ weekend in Santa Barbara is just the ticket. But back in South Cove, someone else’s big day has become a big problem. Antiques dealer Josh Thomas and Mandy Jensen were planning a small private ceremony under an olive tree on the historic Jensen farm—until Mandy went missing . . .

Is this a case of a runaway bride—or a guilty groom? Greg zeroes in on Josh but finds him so annoying that he quietly asks Jill’s help in keeping his number-one suspect distracted. She knows that Josh is searching for something else besides his fiancée—a bank robber’s buried gold bullion. And when the professor he’d been discussing it with turns up dead, she can’t help wondering if what looked like cold feet was actually cold-blooded murder . . .

The Tourist Attraction by Sarah Morgenthaler | Book Review

When Graham Barnett named his diner The Tourist Trap, he meant it as a joke. Now he's stuck slinging reindeer dogs to an endless string of resort visitors who couldn't interest him less. Not even the sweet, enthusiastic tourist in the corner who blushes every time he looks her way… Two weeks in Alaska isn't just the top item on Zoey Caldwell's bucket list. It's the whole bucket. One look at the mountain town of Moose Springs and she's smitten. But when an act of kindness brings Zoey into Graham's world, she may just find there's more to the man than meets the eye…and more to love in Moose Springs than just the Alaskan wilderness.

ALERT! ALERT! New favorite book! I love Alaska, and was so excited when I saw that this rom-com with the cutest cover ever takes place there! I’ve really been gobbling up rom-com books lately. They’re so much fun and allow me to escape with sweet characters. The Tourist Attraction did just that for me. As always, my main points are bolded.

1. Moose Springs is the quaintest, cutest little town. I love that Sarah Morgenthaler was able to keep those cute town vibes while also allowing us to spend time at an exclusive resort that the locals (aka Graham) refer to as “the big house”. Yeah… the locals don’t like the resort at all. They feel it’s ruining their small town and driving business away, not to mention bringing in tons of unwanted tourists and destroying the natural beauty of Moose Springs. I tend to agree with them. I’d be much happier of the resort was a bunch of cute little bare bones cabins (Alaska has my heart and I want it to stay as wild and untouched by consumerism as possible), but we never would have met Zoey and Lana if they were!

2. Zoey, our heroine, has been saving up for YEARS to visit Alaska. When the opportunity arises in the form of crashing on her rich friend Lana’s couch in her luxury suite while she’s there on business, Zoey can not pass it up. She lives a very simple life and doesn’t get around much, which I loved. It makes her all the more excited when she arrives and sees what Alaska has to offer. She’s got everything planned out to the dollar, and carries all of those dollars around in her sparkly green frog coin purse. She’s kind of awkward, glasses slipping down her nose a million times a day, and quirky in a very endearing way. Adorkable, really. I loved her. She’s so relatable and down-to-earth. She is easily excited and wears her heart on her sleeve. She’s also got a good head on her shoulders and a spunky personality that really shines through when she’s pushing back against someone who has done her wrong. She won’t take crap from anyone, but is also emotional and feels a lot of things. I really saw a lot of myself in her.

3. Graham opens a greasy spoon diner called “The Tourist Trap” as a joke, but this place has become a right of passage for anyone who visits. It’s even in the guide books. People line up before the place opens, and insist on experiencing it even though it’s notorious for having the worst service ever. Graham is known for kicking everyone out at a moment’s notice because he’s just tired of the noise or the people or wants to go home. He’s known for not opening on time (or at all) because he’s got better things to do. But the people still come! It was so fun to read about how things at the diner work, and what Graham thinks about it all.

4. Zoey and Graham get off to a bit of a rocky start. I’m not even kidding. I won’t spoil it for you, but I will say that it lands the both of them in jail. Hysterical. Graham is a rugged, sarcastic, grumpy, surly, blunt artist who just so happens to own a diner and is in a pretty serious relationship with a moose that likes to lick windows and loves the smell of fresh baked bread. When he’s not at the diner, he’s carving wood pieces with a chainsaw in his shipping container out back. If I didn’t know this book took place in Alaska, I’d think Graham was a cowboy. He’s got that smooth cowboy swag and calls Zoey “Darlin'”. He’s got a very laid back attitude, but will turn into a grizzly bear if you hurt him or anyone he cares about. He’s kind of the town troublemaker, but not even close to a bad boy even though I think he secretly hopes that’s what people see him as. He loves his moose and his sweet blind dog named Jack, and he hates tourists. Well, except Zoey. He will do anything for Zoey, including making a fool of himself and bringing her the biggest cinnamon rolls known to man.

5. I love all the banter between Graham and Zoey. They flirt and joke, but they also talk about deeper things that mean a lot to them. They’ve shared pain over what they’ve gone through. They’re there for each other, and I felt like their relationship was very sweet and meaningful for the short amount of time they’ve known each other.

6. I loved the locals, and had so much fun getting to know them. If you’ve ever seen Northern Exposure, I got those kinds of vibes from some of the people. Easton in particular is amazing.

7. There are narwhals in this book. NARWHALS. And whales. WHALES.

8. The Tourist Attraction is so funny! I loved everything, from the locals vs. the big house shenanigans, to the run-in with a whale, to the moose that’s left footprints on Graham’s heart and dents in his truck, to the silly touristy things Graham does with Zoey because he’ll do anything for her, to the hangovers and the jail debacle. There’s so much to love here.

Sarah Morgenthaler has done a wonderful job writing a rom-com that has so much depth and heart. I was swooning and laughing my way through it. A charming, sparkling debut. I’ve been forcing everyone I know to either read or pre-order this book, and I’ve already pre-ordered the paperback of the next book in this series! It’s a Christmas book called Mistletoe and Mr. Right , and it comes out in October 2020. This time Lana, Zoey’s best friend, will have her shot at romance. From the sounds of it, it’s going to be just as a wonderful as The Tourist Attraction . I can’t wait!

This sounds like something I would love. I went to Alaska once, and thought it was beautiful, so going back via this book is a welcomed treat. The couple sounds fantastic, and I anticipate a lot of laughter.

How did I not know about this book? Adding it to my TBR pronto! It sounds like something I’d love. :)

The tourist trap.

by C. A. Schulden

Book Cover & Preview Text

Her eyes adjusted to the darkness. She felt primal. Out of nowhere she’d evolved into a different, more animal-like version of herself. She took in the room around her, ran her hands along the cool walls. Unlike some of the other places where she’d been tortured, this place felt different. Everything around her was smoothed out dirt. A pit was the best way she could describe it. Above her, dim, slivers of light came in through seams of some sort in the ceiling. Floorboards maybe. She might be in some sort of basement or root cellar. But if it was a root cellar, it was huge. Deep. Wide. Dampness clung to her like dew to spring grass. It weighed heavily in the room, along with an ambience that she couldn’t quite determine. It smelled of mildew, freshly churned earth, but there was something beneath it. Something metallic, raw. A lion’s breath after a kill. That smell awakened something within her. Something predatory. Fight or flight. Kill or be killed. And a strength she didn’t know she had ignited within her; it straightened her spine, kicked at her resolve. She may not win the battle, but she wouldn’t be taken out easily. She’d make certain that the person who abducted her would remember her as the one he’d misjudged. All Maura had was her hands, her weakened, damaged body and her slipping sanity. But that was all she needed.

About the Book

Eager to escape their families’ annual blended vacation, lifelong “frenemies” Maura and Liz take a ferry to an island deep in the Chesapeake Bay. While beautiful on the outside, the girls soon discover something sinister haunts the island residents. A centuries-long curse demands a yearly sacrifice to keep a vengeful evil at bay, and the islanders will risk everything to keep their secret.

Kidnapped and trapped underground, Maura tests her mettle as she navigates through tunnels that are a maze of horrors at every turn. Maura knows she may not win the battle, but she won’t be taken out easily. She’s going to make certain that the person who abducted her will remember her as the one he misjudged.

Meanwhile, Liz scours the island looking for her lost friend. With help from Jacy, one of the islanders, Liz soon learns that Maura has been chosen to be this year’s island sacrifice. Both girls must push past their physical and mental limitations and find the strength to escape Caethian Island and the evil that it was built upon.

As the owner of Coffee, Books, and More, Jill Gardner likes to support other Main Street businesses, so she attends a paint-and-sip event where, sadly, her brushstrokes look more like blobs. It's still fun, though - aside from some disruption by a couple doing more sipping than painting. Jill's police-detective boyfriend is on alert, but a designated driver volunteers to take the drunken pair back to their bed and breakfast, and everything seems resolved. Until the wife's body turns up the next morning back in the studio.

When you’re planning the perfect vacation, you don’t want to spend your time or money on a tourist trap that disappoints. To help you avoid a case of destination letdown, we turned to the treasure trove of data found in online reviews that can help savvy travelers make the most of their vacation planning.

In July 2023, we analyzed 23.2 million Google reviews of the 500 most popular tourist attractions in the world, spanning 65 countries in six continents. For each attraction, we asked a simple question: How frequently do the reviews mention the terms “tourist trap,” “overrated” or “expensive”?

We compared attractions to one another by measuring the relative frequency of these mentions, dividing the number of mentions in each case by the total number of reviews for that attraction. We break down our findings, so you are armed with the information you need before planning to visit a popular tourist destination, and offer tips on how to travel in a way that’s good for your wanderlust and your wallet.

Key findings

  • The Four Corners Monument (in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah) is the No. 1 tourist trap in the world, according to our analysis.
  • The Blue Lagoon in Iceland and Penang Hill in Malaysia are the top tourist traps in Europe and Asia.
  • The Great Mosque of Mecca in Saudi Arabia had 397,905 reviews on Google, as of our analysis, and not a single one mentioned “tourist trap.”
  • The California Academy of Sciences, Elvis Presley’s Graceland and the South Carolina Aquarium are the most overpriced attractions in the United States.
  • Voodoo Doughnut in Portland, Oregon, is the most overrated tourist attraction in the world.

Top 100 tourist traps worldwide

With the distinction of being the only place where four states meet — Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah — the Four Corners Monument sounds pretty cool. It’s also 30 miles from the closest gas station, so it might appeal to travelers seeking to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. However, this attraction also topped our list in terms of the percentage of disgruntled reviews. Of 10,839 reviews analyzed, 139 flagged this spot as a tourist trap.

Meanwhile, Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin got the most mentions of “tourist trap” in the reviews we analyzed of any tourist attraction in the world, with 400 out 76,269 reviews flagging it as one. This spot is a popular stop for travelers because of its historical significance as a border crossing during the Cold War, when the city was split in half between West Germany and East Germany.

Top 25 tourist traps in the U.S.

Eight of the top 10 tourist traps in the world, as determined by our analysis, are in the U.S. Three of the top tourist traps involve paranormal phenomena — witches, ghosts and UFOs.

Those spots are the Salem Witch Museum in Massachusetts, Calico Ghost Town in California and the International UFO Museum and Research Center in New Mexico. Each location had a number of reviews mentioning "tourist trap," so it seems some visitors left feeling disenchanted.

Most overpriced attractions worldwide

The U.S. is home to the third most overpriced attraction in the world, according to our analysis of reviews mentioning the word “expensive,” with spots in Iceland and Canada taking first and second places. Coming in at most overpriced is the Blue Lagoon in Grindavik, with prices starting at $67 per person but nearly doubling during peak times. This is followed by the Capilano Suspension Bridge in Vancouver where tickets are $69.95 per person when you purchase them at the ticket window. The California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco comes in third for an entry fee that makes consumers grumble at $49.75 for an adult ticket during a peak visiting time.

It seems that Americans feel aquariums are overpriced in general, with aquariums in South Carolina, Maryland, California and Georgia making the top 50 in our list.

California has seven of the top 25 most overpriced attractions, with Tennessee coming in next with three spots in the top 25 — including Elvis Presley’s Graceland, at No. 5 in the world.

Most overrated attractions worldwide

Unless you just really love doughnuts, one spot you might want to skip on your next vacation is Voodoo Doughnut in Portland, Oregon. At least, you might want to skip it if you care about reviews, because our analysis found it to be the most overrated attraction in the world.

Rounding out the top five most overrated attractions are the following:

  • The Little Mermaid in Denmark.

Tips on how to avoid tourist traps

Get recommendations from your travel card concierge.

Your travel card may provide access to a concierge which can help with travel research, planning and booking. For example, The Platinum Card® from American Express (terms apply, rates & fees ) is a luxury travel card (as evidenced by its $695 annual fee) with a slew of perks and protections, including a highly regarded concierge service. Contact your concierge early on in your vacation planning and tell them you want to go off the beaten path and enjoy unique experiences rather than known tourist traps.

Consider where your rewards can take you

It’s no secret that credit card rewards can help you see the world. But are you getting the most out of your stash? Let’s consider an example using American Airlines miles.

As of the time of this writing, a flight from New York to Honolulu and back at the end of October 2023 might run you anywhere from about 53,000 AAdvantage miles to well over 100,000 AAdvantage miles. By contrast, if you were to fly from New York to San Juan, Puerto Rico and back in the same time period, you might find deals in the ballpark of 24,000 or 31,000 miles. While many variables impact the exact cost, being flexible with your vacation options can save you substantially.

Plus, when opting for destinations with less sticker shock, you can still find activities and sites that are every bit as amazing as you'd find in a pricier locale. Continuing our example from above, if Hawaii's stunning rainforests initially attracted you to Honolulu, consider that Puerto Rico is home to El Yunque National Forest — the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System.

If you’ve piled up the points on a card that earns transferable rewards, rather than one that’s specific to a certain airline or hotel chain , you can do even more shopping around. Compare the cost of booking award travel on the loyalty transfer partners your card offers before you commit, because the number of points or miles required can vary dramatically between different airlines.

Plus, savvy travelers know that travel credit cards sometimes offer deals, such as double value when transferring points from your card to a specific airline partner. For instance, the Bilt World Elite Mastercard® offered a deal on Aug. 1, 2023 where cardholders with Bilt Silver Status could get double the number of Virgin Red points for their Bilt points when transferring their rewards to the airline. Keeping a sharp eye out for deals like this could help your earnings take you farther than you’d normally go.

Finally, great deals on award travel aren’t just for people willing to pay an annual fee for luxury cards, either. See our list of best travel cards with no annual fee for budget-friendly options.

If you’re going abroad, it’s best to use a credit card without foreign currency surcharges. Check out our picks for the best credit cards with no foreign transaction fees .

Follow a trusted travel newsletter

What better way to avoid tourist traps than by getting curated recommendations from a trusted source? By getting a travel newsletter in your email inbox, you can make note throughout the year of enticing destinations and enriching activities, and plan your next vacation accordingly.

For example, people with an Amex Platinum or the invite-only American Express Centurion Black Card * The information for the American Express Centurion Black Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. can receive the Departures newsletter, which the issuer describes as a “lifestyle resource”. Examples of the content you can expect, based on a recent issue of Departures, include "7 Hotels Worth Planning Your Whole Trip Around" with recommendations for stays in Paris, New York City and more, and "How I Escaped City Life and Moved My Family to a Mexican Surf Town".

In short, smart travel recommendations are just a few clicks away — and can help you craft the dream vacation while avoiding tourist traps that might not leave you feeling fully satisfied.

Seek out lodging that isn’t part of a mega-chain hotel collection

If you have a travel rewards credit card , check if it grants you special access to a hotel collection. For example, Capital One announced the Lifestyle Collection in mid-2024, designed to be exclusively available via Capital One Travel for people with specific Capital One cards .

The Lifestyle Collection is a list of curated boutique hotels allowing guests to stay in popular destinations but avoid the crush of an overcrowded megahotel lobby.  While your choice of lodging won’t necessarily prevent you stopping by a tourist trap, finding a great stay can make it easier for you to have a wide selection of possible vacation activities.

If picking the right credit card has you overwhelmed, we’ve got you . Here are our picks for the best credit cards for every type of person.

Methodology

In July 2023, we analyzed 23.2 million Google reviews of 500 popular tourist attractions in the world, spanning 65 countries in six continents.

We focused our analysis on mentions of certain keywords that indicate a common negative sentiment among visitors. Those keywords are: “tourist trap”, “expensive”, and “overrated”.

It’s true that a few uses of these keywords do not fit in a negative context (e.g. “It’s kind of a tourist trap but we loved it!”). Based on our analysis, these positive instances of usage were not frequent enough to be statistically significant, and in any case, they are consistent enough across attractions to cancel each other out.

We began with a list of 1,600 tourist attractions for consideration, before narrowing to our final 500. We removed from this list, with only a few exceptions, all national parks, state parks, lakes, and mountains. We also removed sports stadiums. The list was further reduced based on the total number of reviews submitted for each attraction.

All reviews analyzed were written in English.

The Best Tips For Avoiding Tourist Trap Restaurants In Europe, Per Our Travel Expert

R estaurants can be one of the most memorable parts of any trip, from the cute cafés in European cities to the luxurious eateries serving gourmet meals. For many travelers, trying new and delicious food is one of the main reasons to even board a plane in the first place.

However, choosing the wrong spots can leave a bad taste in your mouth (sometimes literally) . Falling for a tourist trap restaurant can lead you to feeling disappointed, overcharged, and hungry. Not only that, if you don't realize an establishment is geared toward tourists, you may assume a destination's food is far worse than it truly is.

To avoid these subpar restaurants once and for all, Explore spoke exclusively with Chelsea Dickenson, an experienced traveler and the founder of Cheap Holiday Expert . One of her best tips is to ditch the big, crowded streets when you're ready to eat. "A big red flag is the location," Dickenson shared. "The closer a restaurant is to a popular tourist attraction, the higher the chance that it's a bit of a tourist trap!" The travel expert suggested heading a few blocks away from the main streets to find hidden gems.

Read more: Anthony Bourdain's Perfect Advice For Spotting The Best Local Places To Eat

Consider The Source Before Choosing A Restaurant

European destinations are often used to serving tourists from all over the world, and as a result, it can be difficult to detect which spots are truly authentic and which are focused on catering to travelers' tastes. To narrow down the options and find the best restaurants when traveling , Chelsea Dickenson prefers going straight to local sources for recommendations. "I love asking my taxi drivers, the hotel staff, and even people I meet out and about what their favorite place is that they'd visit with friends," the travel expert revealed.

Of course, this can be hard to do when you're researching a destination from home. Still, remember to take online reviews with a grain of salt, as Dickenson noted that ratings can be influenced by tourists looking for, say, an Instagrammable spot rather than an authentic meal.

On that note, don't pressure yourself to choose all your restaurants in advance. The avid traveler explained, "I'm quite relaxed when I go away — I like to be spontaneous! But there [are] some places that have really surprised me, that the common practice is booking ahead." With that said, she usually skips reservations when exploring a new place. "As long as reservations aren't imperative, I think the best approach is to book one or two meals but then hit the streets and see what takes your fancy!"

Think Outside The Box To Find Authentic Eats

A trattoria in Italy, a café terrace in France, a table with an ocean view in Greece — some experiences are simply a must when visiting certain European countries. Still, going for the stereotypical restaurants on vacation can lead you to some pretty overrated tourist traps . Chelsea Dickenson told Explore that opting for a less conventional eatery can often be much more rewarding for both your taste buds and your wallet. "If you're on a budget and in an expensive city, I love checking out the bars, restaurants, and cafeterias in student's unions. I once had a great lunch at the food hall in Trinity College in Dublin!" the expert shared.

Another creative, though still delicious, option is to visit a local food market. As Dickenson explained, traditional markets are typically stocked with plenty of fresh seasonal foods, while trendy food markets offer items that may be more appealing to tourists (even if the quality isn't up to par). Alternatively, Dickenson suggested hitting up a supermarket and creating a picnic with the local treats that catch your eye.

We are travelling to NY for a week on Tues. I am keen to know if anyone has any recommendations for mid-range restaurants in the midtown area?

I don't want to eat anywhere that is a tourist trap and while i know NY is expensive, I live in London so am used to relatively high costs. I'd say we'd be looking to spend no more than 90-115 dollars for a nice meal for the two of us. We don't drink loads so would allow for a glass of wine and a beer vs. a bottle.

In London there are plenty of excellent restaurants and delis in the centre of town that i wouldn't consider to be catering for tourists only so keen to understand if same is true for Manhatten and something within shortish (15-20 mins) walk of our hotel. That said, we are actually keen walkers and would happily walk up to half hour for a memorable meal!

Please describe mid-range in dollars & tell us your cuisine likes & dislikes.

The good news is that not all of Midtown Manhattan is a tourist trap -- although I won't discourage you from exploring farther afield. Yours is a common question, so here are 2 recent threads with a number of suggestions for you:

Their 3-course, $38 prix fixe luncheon is served until 4:30 PM every day of the week and offers some very nice options:

https://www.theavragroup.com/avra-rockefeller-center/#lunch-prix-fixe

But also consider supplementing that with a a side order of "Avra chips" to share: thinly sliced crispy zucchini and eggplant chips served with tzatziki dip.

Midtown Manhattan is not a tourist trap. If you are "keen walkers", walk up and down 8th and 9th Avenues and stop at the many restaurants that appeal to you.

Great lunch deal at Gallagher ,s steakhouse, 3 course for $32 served til 4.

Your hotel is in Hells Kitchen where there's lots of good ethnic food. Here's a list

https://ny.eater.com/maps/best-restaurants-hells-kitchen-nyc

For breakfast, Westway Diner and Carnegie Diner…for coffee and pastry ,Bibble & Sip. Amy's Bread and Five Napkin Burger good for lunches and sandwiches.

Btw, wine by the glass here is pricey. Expect $10-15/ glass and more. Beer is about $8. Tax is 8+% and tip 15-20%.

$45-60 a person for dinner including a glass of wine or beer for good food at a sit down restaurant is tough these days. If that amount is supposed to include tax and tip, even harder. Aimlessly wandering down 8th or 9th is a sure fire way to end up somewhere with meh food. Sure there are lots of restaurants and bars but most of them don’t rise above run of the mill.

So here are a few suggestions for better than average.

My list is nothing mind blowing, but very good food.

If you are willing to travel, for your budget, I would suggest trying out Laser Wolf in Williamsburg . It will stretch your budget just a bit but probably the biggest bang for the buck at that price point.

"Aimlessly wandering down 8th or 9th is a sure fire way to end up somewhere with meh food."

Kind of missing the point.

There are some really good restaurants to choose from, including a couple of my favorites in the city.

The point = "Midtown Manhattan is not a tourist trap"

You'll be walking through a highly residential area, with lots of personal favorites of the people who live there.

Do a bit of research to narrow down options = always a good idea.
