Tips for Buying a Travel Journal

Consider your needs.

Are you going on a road trip? Backcountry hiking? On a month-long ship journey across the ocean? Consider where you’re going and for how long when picking a journal. If you’re going to be in some extreme weather, you might want to pick a journal that has some weather protection. Short on suitcase space? Or maybe you’re only bringing minimal gear? Consider a pocket-sized journal to maximize precious packing room.

Pick the right page format and style

Be sure to look at what types of pages come with your journal, and if it is refillable, what types of page refills are available. If you’re used to writing on lined paper, you’ll want to make sure your journal has that. But if you’re looking for some blank pages so you can sketch or add photos, make sure the journal includes them, too.

There is no right or wrong way to journal. Simply start and just let the words flow onto the pages. Talk about what you’re doing, how you’re feeling, who you're traveling with, the itinerary, what you ate, etc. If you’re not quite sure how to journal, choose a journal with prompts that will help you get started.

A bullet journal is more for to-do lists, scheduling, organizing, and jotting down ideas. Usually, bullet journals include dotted pages instead of lined pages, but you could simply add in your own bullet points to a lined journal if you wish. Bullet journals are great for quick notes while on the go, or for organization in between long journaling sessions.

TL;DR: The Traveler’s Notebook is a journal created by the Traveler’s Company. It’s a simple leather cover with elastic bands that hold thin paper notebooks.

How does a Traveler’s Notebook work?

The beauty of the Traveler’s Notebook is that you choose the components, which means you’re able to design a notebook custom-crafted just for you. Let’s dive into all the options.

The cover is a flat, thick piece of leather with holes punched in it for elastic bands. It’s that simple. The longer you use your Traveler’s Notebook, the more of a patina the cover develops. The scratches it picks up over time make it look well-traveled, and the cover will form itself to your particular notebook configuration as you break it in (much like a baseball mitt shapes itself to your hand over time). It comes in four colors: black, brown, camel, and blue.

The elastic bands are an integral part of the Traveler’s Notebook system. There are bands that hold the inserts inside the cover, and another band that holds the Traveler’s Notebook closed. 

Pro tip: When your new Traveler’s Notebook arrives, it comes in a cardboard envelope held closed with a band. Save that! It’s a good spare for the band that holds the notebook closed. 

The company also sells thin, oversized rubber bands called “connecting bands” that you can use to connect inserts to each other so you can fit additional components inside your notebook. (Want to know how? Jump here.)

When you purchase your notebook, the default bands are usually the color of the cover you purchase, but you can buy a set of bands in different colors and replace them. 

The Inserts

The core element of any journal is, of course, paper. The inserts for the Traveler’s Notebook come in a variety of styles ( lined, grid, or blank pages) and weights (watercolor, lightweight, kraft, and sketch). You can also make your own! Just choose the type of paper you’d like to use, cut it down to the right proportions, fold in half, and use a staple or two to hold it together book style.

In addition to paper notebooks, the Traveler’s Company offers other kinds of inserts, to add additional functionality to your notebook.

What sizes are available for the Traveler’s Notebook?

The Traveler’s Notebook comes in just two sizes: regular and passport. The regular size notebooks are 220mm x 120mm (about 8.6” x 4.7”). The passport size notebooks are 134mm x 98mm (approximately 5.3” x 3.9”). Both are only around 10mm thick. The passport size notebook is perfect for travel, as it fits nicely in your pocket—and with the right accessories to keep it secure, it’s also a great place to store your passport! The regular size notebook is also quite portable while providing a little more room to write or create.

How to add inserts to your Traveler’s Notebook (using the connecting bands)

Inserts are added to your Traveler’s Notebook by opening them to the center and slipping them under the band that runs the length of the cover.

This is a bit of a non sequitur, but these terms threw us when we were first learning about the Traveler’s Notebook. So here’s the scoop: 

The Traveler’s Notebook used to be called the Midori Traveler’s Notebook, until Midori rebranded as the Traveler’s Company in 2016. Some people still use the Midori name when talking about them. (It’s not a different type of notebook.)

Because the Traveler’s Notebook only comes with leather covers, hobbyists started making faux versions with vegan leather, or cardboard and cloth. So, fake Midori Traveler’s Notebooks garnered the nickname “faux-dori.” You can find a variety of “faux-dori” notebooks on Etsy .

It’s slim. 

The biggest win for the Traveler’s Notebook is that it is possible to customize it, yet keep it  thin. You choose how thick it becomes, depending on how many inserts you add. Ring binder systems are also customizable, but they start out bulky! (Plus, we might have a little PTSD from the loud click, because we got our fingers caught in the rings once.)

It’s tactile.

From the experience of opening your new notebook to using it daily, the Traveler’s Notebook is all about the physical feel—of both the cover and the paper. Writing on even the most basic notebook inserts is a pleasant experience. 

It’s easy to deconstruct.

If you don’t want to take your entire journal with you, it’s incredibly simple to slide a notebook out of a band and just carry that one notebook with you. This works brilliantly for capturing ideas, quick sketches, writing thoughts, carrying reference info, or just having your to-do list handy on something small enough to slip into your pocket.

It’s easy to reconstruct.

As your needs change, the Traveler’s Notebook adapts. Not using the folder that much? Take it out. Need a pre-printed calendar? Add it. 

It’s divisible.

Even if all you do is insert three of the same simple paper inserts into your Traveler’s Notebook, there are automatically three sections you can label. Use one insert for your task lists, another for sketches, and the third for journaling. Alternatively, use one as a calendar, one for work-related notes, and one to jot down personal notes. How you lay out each section is entirely up to you.

Bullet Journaling

The Travelers Notebook is perfect for bullet journaling. The tall, narrow pages of the notebook inserts lend themselves well to list-making, and the ability to add different sections makes categorizing your bulleted lists a breeze.

Processing your thoughts

There are literally dozens of ways to engage with your thoughts through journaling (for a comprehensive list, check out our guide on How To Journal ), but for now, here are five things to try first:

Morning Pages

Morning pages are exactly what they sound like. Every morning, sit down with your Traveler’s Notebook and just start writing. Don’t edit your thoughts or pause to think; simply write down everything that comes to mind until you’ve filled three pages. Because the Travelers Notebook is customizable and portable, it’s a brilliant way to boost your personal creativity through art journaling. We’ve found it especially well-suited to:

Watercolors are ideal for art journaling because they dry so much more quickly than other kinds of paint. Watercolor painting techniques are relatively simple, so they’re easy to learn, and you can even find watercolors in pencil and crayon form!

You can use them to create decorative borders to highlight information that you want to stand out, or just to add basic definition to sections on a page. (They’re also a lot quicker and less messy than paint or markers.)

This is where the accessories that are available for the Traveler’s Notebook are really helpful. Use the film pocket holders to add photos to illustrate your daily journal entries, or apply double-sided stickers to add curiosities that evoke memories from an epic vacation. The brass clips are ideal for including larger items (like maps and event tickets), and sticky notes are a fun way to add artistic commentary to your layout.

If you don’t enjoy writing, and aren’t that keen on drawing, gluebooking might be a good technique to try with your Traveler’s Notebook. Gluebooks require minimal writing and rely on collage. You can also add text, drawings, or paintings, but the main idea is wholly to glue things to the pages.

After all, the Traveler’s Notebook would be completely useless if it just sat on your desk, collecting dust. It’s designed to travel. (Seriously, it’s right there in the name.)

A really well presented article Cathy, thank you. A few years ago I was in Foyles bookshop I came across their Midori section and checked out what they hell it was all about. I eventually invested in the both sizes of notebook, but actually the passport size is I find more practical as its compact and you can put it in your back pocket and go. IFrom a chap’s point of view the Midori is rugid, smart and great to adapt and maintain. It also looks the business! I also like the idea of its cultural origins from Japan and being a bit left of field and quirky in comparison to the usual personal organisers – which makes it stand out really. I recall I inadvertently placed my Midori on the table at a office meeting while opening my laptop and suddenly my female coworkers wanted to check out my Midori! (not me as I’m married!). :0) so yeah I’m now quite popular because of it.

When you hold a TRAVELER’S notebook in your hand, you can imagine that you’re a midcentury jetsetter, writing down travel plans to far-flung destinations before tucking the notebook in your coat pocket and walking off with your luggage in hand.

Even if you’re not a frequent flier, the TRAVELER’S notebook is an excellent daily companion. It’s available in two sizes: Regular , which has a tall aspect ratio reminiscent of a plane ticket, and Passport , which—true to its name—is just slightly larger than a real passport. These carefully selected sizes fit just right in your backpack or purse, so you can bring your TRAVELER’S notebook with you everywhere. And because the TRAVELER’S notebook is meant to be a modular system, you can swap out refills depending on how you plan to use them. Keep reading to see the different TRAVELER’S notebooks and refills available.

A Starter Kit is the perfect place to begin your journey with TRAVELER’S notebooks. Each kit includes a notebook cover, blank refill , two spare elastic bands, and a cotton case. One elastic band is used to close the cardboard packaging, while the second elastic band (in a contrasting color) is packaged with the notebook. The cotton case can be used to protect your TRAVELER’S notebook when it’s not in use.

TRAVELER’S notebook Refills are filled with Midori Diary (MD) paper, which has been continually refined since the 1960s. As Midori’s signature paper, MD paper is bleed resistant, feather resistant, and fountain pen friendly. It has a slight texture that allows graphite pencils to “grip” the surface, giving you plenty of control as you write or sketch. While the MD paper in MD Notebooks is cream colored, almost all TRAVELER’S notebook Refills use white MD paper.

Different types of specialty paper are also available for you to include in your TRAVELER’S notebook.

Add an undated planner to your TRAVELER’S notebook and transform it into a true everyday companion. These monthly calendars and planners do not have pre-printed dates, so you can start using them whenever you’d like—or skip days when you don’t have plans. Check out the dated section further down the guide for refills that are made specifically for each year. All TRAVELER’S notebook Planner Refills use cream MD paper.

Installing refills in your TRAVELER’S notebook is easy. We show the steps below using a Passport TRAVELER’S notebook. The same steps can be used with a Regular cover.

1. Open a refill to the middle of the signature. You’ll know you’re there when you see stitches or staples.

2. Slide the refill under one of the elastic bands inside the TRAVELER’S notebook.

3. You can add an additional TRAVELER’S notebook refill by using the second, shorter elastic band inside the cover. Tug on the elastic to give yourself more slack.

4. Slide the second refill in the same way as you did with the first.

There are multiple ways to include more refills to your TRAVELER’S notebook, so you don’t have to feel limited by the number of elastic bands inside the cover! While we’ve seen some stuffed TRAVELER’S notebooks, we recommend sticking with three to four refills (depending on how thick they are). Too many refills will add awkward bulk to your TRAVELER’S notebook, and they’ll stick out past the cover.

Don’t throw out the packaging from your new TRAVELER’S notebook! The elastic closure attached to the box can be used to add more refills.

1. Remove the elastic band from the box.

2. Slip the elastic band over the cover. Tuck the band into the notches cut into the top and bottom of the cover.

3. Insert the refill through the band as you would normally.

4. The downside to this method is that the elastic is visible from the outside, and it might catch on things by accident.

You can also use the same methods shown in the Connecting Bands section below with the extra elastic band.

You can use Connecting Bands to install multiple refills in one cover. Be sure to pick the right band size for Regular and Passport TRAVELER’S notebooks.

1. Insert a refill through the TRAVELER’S notebook’s interior elastic band.

2. Place the second refill next to the first. Open both notebooks to the middle and hold the second half of the first refill and the first half of the second refill together.

3. Slide the Connecting Band over both refill halves. You can repeat these steps with new refills as needed.

4. The refills won’t be perfectly centered with the middle of the cover, which can look a little odd. However, this method doesn’t require you to remove refills in order to add more.

We show an alternative method of using a Connecting Band below.

1. Outside of the TRAVELER’S notebook, hold the second half of the first refill and the first half of the second refill together.

2. Use a Connecting Band to attach the first and second refill together.

3. Close the refills and slide one refill under the interior elastic band. You’ll know you’ve done it right when the interior elastic band sits between the back cover of the first refill and the front cover of the second refill.

4. The refills will appear centered with the middle of the cover. This method also ensures you can access the interior elastic band so you can use it to add a third refill.

Closure on journals is important, especially when they might be knocking around a suitcase or a backpack for longer stretches of time. If you don’t want your pages to get crumpled, and especially if you’re someone who likes to store mementos between the pages of your journal, a solid closure is a must.

A thicker gsm of paper, for example, is something that’s more likely to be used in a sketchbook (90 gsm or higher), and is good if you don’t want permanent pens to bleed through, if you plan on painting, or sticking things in.

Then again, if you want something that’s a little more stylish and classic than bleached, white paper, then maybe more classy, cream-coloured pages will be what you want in your travel journal.

It’s also possible, as the Rite In The Rain brand shows, to have waterproof, weatherproof paper, in case you plan on writing in adverse weather conditions.

Essentially it comes down to what you will be doing on those pages: painting, sketching, doodling, making notes, or whatever. Consider the effect of your planned use will have on different sorts of paper and then make your choice.

4. What’s on the page?

Though in the past, travel journals were pretty simple affairs (either a spiral bound journalists’ notebook, a Midori-style travel journal or something similar), things are a little bit different now.

Even just a few years ago, pages only came either blank, ruled or squared. Nowadays, pages in travel journals sometimes come pre-decorated. This may be cool for some people, but for others it may feel like any pre-existing writing or illustration on the page takes away from your own memories.

Prompts in some books can be fun: they encourage you to make lists of things you otherwise wouldn’t have considered, like your favourite foods, favourite hotels, and even random convenience store items you find in the countries you visit. Other times, text on the page acts as a prompt to get you thinking, maybe even getting you to write something more in-depth than you were planning to.

All in all, the choice is whether you want a completely blank page to start with – which can be daunting for a lot of people – or if you want to be gently nudged into creating an awesome travel journal for yourself. Either way, though different, is totally legit.

It’s very simple and very basic, but this is going to be a pretty huge (no pun intended) deal when it comes to deciding exactly what travel journal you are going to purchase for yourself.

If you’re heading off on a year-long backpacking trip around the world and you feel like you’ve got your one bag travel down to a T, then you’re going to want something compact and light.

However, if you want to really get into creating a scrapbook-style travel journal full of memories, sketches and tickets, then you are going to want a big enough book to fit all of that in.

If your plan is to use your travel journal for things like city breaks and two week-long vacations – in which instance you may be using a suitcase – then you may not worry too much about the size, with room in a large suitcase for a larger travel journal, naturally.

Another thing to consider is what you’re going to look like if you feel like writing your travel journal in public. It may not be practical to be lugging around an A4 sized travel journal, or to get it out if you want to make note of the tiny cafe you’re in, or trying to write on a cramped seat on a train or bus. Compact in these cases may be a lot better!

6. Length of your trip

Next to size, when thinking about what sort of travel journal is going to be right for you, a lot of people often circle back to this factor: just how long is the trip?

The thing is, some travel journals are more geared up towards one single trip: a month in Thailand, two weeks exploring Italy, a six week long road trip through the USA. That sort of thing, in which case, you won’t be needing (or wanting) a zillion pages.

Other travel journals are for numerous trips, such as the lengthy options offered by Moleskine and Midori-style notebooks (the latter of which have no structure, and for which you can buy paper-only refills for the leather cover), mean that you can dip in and out, adding different details to your various adventures, referring back to past travels: a weekend in Berlin here, an epic hike in Nepal there.

Essentially, the fewer the pages, the more likely the travel journal in question will be good for a single, perhaps lengthy trip. For the serial travellers and backpackers out there, something longer and more permanent may be the travel journal for you.

7. Organization

No longer simple collections of pages between two hard (or soft) covers, the best travel journals of today sometimes boast a whole load of interior organization to help keep you and your trip on the right track.

From simply adding an interior pocket, where you can keep a few important tickets and pictures safe, to going all out and adding plenty of envelopes and places to slip in all manner of small, special physical memories from your travels, it can vary quite a bit.

But organization isn’t just about pockets. There are other things to think about, too. Some travel journals come complete with calendars, spaces for to-do lists, maps, itineraries and even packing tips. These kind of added extras mean that the journal turns into more of a planner all round scheduling.

Obviously. Money, money, money: it’s going to be a big factor in whether you choose to buy such and such a travel journal over another one. Let’s face it, you can’t buy what you can’t afford.

Even if you can afford it, $48 might just seem – to some people – like too much to ask for a travel journal. On the other hand, some people may not trust that a sub-$8 travel journal will be any good in terms of durability.

The fact of the matter is that cheap things can be surprisingly good, and expensive things can be surprisingly bad. When it comes to budget, it’s best to choose something mid-range that has good reviews and that meets the needs of what you’re looking for in a travel diary: don’t skimp out just because it’s $5 more than you wanted it to be. A Phoenix team had its wheelchairs damaged after a flight. The airline's response? A $150 travel voucher

Members of a Phoenix-based wheelchair basketball team are speaking out after a pattern of what they consider their "freedom," their "livelihood," and their "legs" be treated as an inconvenience.

Players of the Ability360 Wheelchair Suns said they were stuck on a Southwest Airlines plane for more than two hours without their wheelchairs after they took a flight earlier this month from Phoenix to Richmond for the National Wheelchair Basketball Championships.

The problems continued off the plane.

"We watched our chairs come off of the conveyor belt off of the plane and we watched them fall off the conveyor belt onto the ground. Just chair, after chair, after chair," said Justin Walker, a player for the Wheelchair Suns.

Airport workers mishandling and damaging the wheelchairs, delays to travel and apologetic travel vouchers seem to be par for the course, team members told The Arizona Republic.

The experience is not unique to the Wheelchair Suns. Thousand of mobility device damage incidents are reported to the U.S. Department of Transportation a month.

'It's sickening, to be honest with you'

The team communicated with Southwest six months before the April 10 flight, according to Walker. There were three teams on the flight and each player would be traveling with both a sport wheelchair and an everyday chair. The return flight was scheduled for April 14.

On both the departing and returning flights, team members said they experienced long delays to get off the plane and incorrect storage of their wheelchairs that led to damage.

Walker said the airline should have known what accommodations they needed to make.

Despite that they had been in contact with the airline for half a year, not enough employees were there to help reassemble the wheelchairs they had deconstructed, he said.

"It's just sickening, to be honest with you," Walker said. "It's sickening because we know we're an inconvenience when we have two chairs, we know that. That's why we try to communicate with them as much as possible to allow the situation to be as seamless as possible."

Myranda Shields, social media manager for the Wheelchair Suns, said it wasn't like losing bags, luggage or medication. Wheelchairs serve as legs.

"It's not luggage and that is the problem, they don't look at it like, I've got 300 devices people need to live and then 200 bags under there," Shields said. "They look at it like, oh, I've got 500 bags."

In response to the incident, Southwest sent out an email to the NWBA and the coaches, but they have not reached out to the people who were on the plane, according to Walker.

In an email obtained by The Republic, the airline claimed they had been in communication with the cities involved for "well over a month" and failed on its end for "several" of the people on board.

The airline stated in the email it did not communicate with many of the people and their teams about whether it could take the wheels off the chairs, and the intent was to create more space for all baggage by removing the wheels.

For the flight home, the airline said it did not want to disappoint the team on their travel home and asked to zip tie the wheels together with nametags. It also stated it would give players the option of taking their sports chairs to the gate so the wheels could be removed there. The email acknowledged the team would be flying on a "smaller" Boeing 737-700 aircraft, which had a "smaller cargo hold area."

In a statement to The Republic, Southwest said it apologized if it had not met customer care expectations.

"We have reviewed the situation and addressed it with the appropriate parties so we are able to provide a better experience for our Customers the next time they fly with Southwest," the statement read. "We have a long history of caring for our Customers and apologize any time we don’t meet those expectations."

Walker said they were given a $150 travel voucher in an attempt to compensate for the mistreatment.

"It's a voucher to a place that's already mistreated us. Cool," Walker said. "What is $150 going to get us? Nothing. So, when our stuff is falling down and we're watching our legs, our livelihood, our freedom fall on the ground like no one cares. ... I know about disabled rights. I know if I give you my device, you are obligated by law to bring that chair back to me the way I gave it to you."

According to the Air Carrier Access Act, if an airline damages someone's wheelchair, they are completely liable, regardless of the cost.

Shields said they have not filed an official complaint because she has done it many times in the past. The Republic obtained emails confirming that on at least five occasions, the airline sent vouchers to Shields and Walker for bad experiences she said were "I'm sorry vouchers."

Now, she is taking a different approach and speaking out.

"This is a systemic problem with the airline industry and how they treat people in wheelchairs," Shields said.

"It's unreasonable to expect us to live like this whenever we want to travel and it's also unreasonable to expect us to not travel, not do the things we love to do that we are able to do, because we are in wheelchairs."

Laws are aimed to protect people with disabilities. But is it enough?

The Americans with Disabilities Act was established in 1990 to prohibit discrimination based on disabilities.

The Air Carrier Access Act requires airlines to provide assistance to people with disabilities when traveling by air, including with loading and stowing of assistive devices. In response to incidents like what the Wheelchair Suns faced, the U.S. Department of Transportation is proposing a rule to strengthen implementation of the act.

According to the Department of Transportation, airlines "mishandle" on average about 1.5% of the mobility devices they transport.

In 2022, airlines carried 741,582 wheelchairs and scooters, and there were 11,389 incidents reported to the DOT. That's an increase from 2021, when carriers transported 553,969 mobility devices and 7,239 incidents were reported, according to USA TODAY.

In the new proposal unveiled by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in February, the definition of "mishandled" devices would specify that any mishandling of wheelchairs and assistive devices by airlines is a violation that is subject to penalty. If an airline does mishandle an assistive device, they would have to immediately notify the impacted passenger of their rights.

The passenger could then file a claim with the airline, receive a loaner wheelchair or scooter with certain customizations. If necessary, the passenger would have access to a complaints resolution official and to choose a preferred vendor for device repairs or replacement.

The proposal is undergoing public comment period through May 13. Many of those comments echoed a familiar sentiment:

"I am appalled by the rampant disregard that airline employees have displayed when handling passengers' wheelchairs."

"Airlines need to be held to account for this by training and retraining staff from baggage handlers to flight attendants."

"When wheelchairs are damaged or delayed, lives are upended due to missed connections, missed experiences, missed employment, and even injuries due to inadequate loaner wheelchairs."

Players watch wheelchairs be mishandled, fall off conveyor belt

After the team got off the plane, Walker said they started to notice their tires and rims were broken.

As they were sitting down at the carousel, a message came over the loudspeaker that said there was an inconvenience with the bags on the flight because of the wheelchairs and 30 bags were left in Denver because of it.

"Now we have every person that was on that flight that was already pissed off because we were late getting there," Walker said. "Now they're pissed off looking at us."

Walker said the airline only escalated the situation and when trusted to take care of the passengers' livelihoods, they did not.

When the team flew home to Phoenix, the airline said they would zip-tie and tag the wheels so the process would flow. The wheels were zip-tied, but during their layover in Chicago, the ground crew cut the zip ties, according to a social media post Walker and Shields posted to Instagram. Players then watched as their wheelchairs fell from the conveyor belt.

On the way back, the team needed an hour and a half to get off the plane so they could match the wheels to the chairs. Chairs and axles were broken. According to Walker, everyday wheelchairs cost between $5,000 and $8,000, and basketball wheelchairs between $8,000 and $12,000.

Walker said they were told it was an inconvenience for them to bring their chairs and that they would instead be put in a standard wheelchair, typically provided by airports and hospitals.

"For you to ask me to use somebody else's wheelchair that I don't know, that is honestly like asking you to use somebody else's underwear," Walker said. "We don't know if it's been clean, we don't know what's been happening in that chair, we don't know where it came from."

Players call for 'serious' policy changes

Speaking out about the experience has been part of the team members' way to share their story and their voices, they said.

"That's why we're doing what we're doing right now is because it needs to change," Shields said. "I don't need to be crying in the airport on the way to a national tournament because I've got all these angry strangers coming over and poking at me."

Shields said the airline needs serious policy changes regarding wheelchair storage. She said she would like to be able to remove the wheels herself, attach them to the chairs and make sure they are properly tagged.

She also suggested the airline pick a bigger plane to better accompany everyone and train their staff so they know the difference between an everyday wheelchair and a sports wheelchair.

Christopher Rodriguez, Ability360's CEO, got into disability advocacy work because of his older brother TJ — who has significant intellectual and developmental disabilities.

He said he has spent his career trying to assist in breaking down barriers for those with disabilities.

Ability360 is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit corporation. Through its comprehensive programs, Ability360 touches the lives of individuals with disabilities throughout Arizona and addresses the disability concerns of their family members, co-workers and employers, according to its website.

Ability360 has three adult wheelchair basketball teams that compete in Division II, Division III and the Women’s Division in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association.

"It's heartbreaking to hear about these stories and to understand how frequent they are, despite the fact that our paramount piece of legislation and law that put forth the rights to accessibility, the ADA, was passed over 25 years ago," Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez said the Southwest incident was disappointing and a horrible situation to put the athletes in.

Education needs to occur so both the workers at the airport and airline employees know the needs of individuals with disabilities and are aware of the challenges they may face, he said.

"If they fully appreciated or understood that a person's wheelchair is literally an extension of their body, perhaps they would have been more sensitive to the situation, but unfortunately, that did not seem to be the case," Rodriguez said.

After placing sixth in the tournament, the D2 Phoenix Suns season came to an end. While the men will not be playing again until next fall, travel will continue.

Shields said she is weary of traveling again but was hopeful that her next flight, which was scheduled for Wednesday, would not be as bad.
