New food tour offers taste of South Philadelphia

WPVI logo

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Get your appetite ready for a new food tour through one of Philadelphia's most iconic locations: the Italian Market.

Whether you've lived in Philadelphia for years or are new to the area, this is a really great way to get a taste of South Philadelphia.

It's a three-hour walking tour that takes you around some of the most iconic South Philly spots, but it also includes some new-ish staples in the community.

"It's just the joy of my life to get to talk to and tell people about these restaurants," says Maddy Sweitzer-Lammé, a food writer and the founder of Tiny Table Tours .

The "Beyond the Italian Market" walking tour starts on Passyunk Avenue, then heads across Washington Avenue and into the Italian Market.

"There are a lot of places that I feel really passionate about and love," Sweitzer-Lammé says.

All along the way, there are samples of tasty bites, and wine too.

"All of the spots on the tour are places that I go all the time, that I love, that my friends love," she says. "I think these spots are really foundational to the city."

Those who embark on this culinary journey try smoked salmon from hidden gem Biederman's and cannoli at the longstanding Isgro Pastries.

There's also a stop at the legendary DiBruno Brothers, but it's not for the cheese or meats. Instead, sip on a unique, featured wine.

"Anyone can go in the cheese shop," she says. "They are great, but less people know about the wine."

It's not all about the sips and bites, you're also sinking your teeth into the rich history and culture of the community.

'This is one of the oldest and continually-operated outdoor markets in America," Sweitzer-Lammé says.

"This whole area, Washington Avenue, was populated by a lot of industrial warehouses," she explains, "so immigrants would live around here and work in the warehouses."

Sweitzer-Lammé also shows people that South Philly's culinary world is more than just our city's famous cheesesteaks.

"I really believe the bahn mi sandwich is truly the iconic Philadelphia sandwich," she says, "more so than the cheesesteak."

You'll get to try it for yourself at Ba Le Bakery.

"Bahn mi has every flavor," says Victor Nguyen from Ba Le Bakery, "spicy, salty, creamy filling, fresh vegetables. It has every flavor."

"My hope is that these tours will give people an opportunity to get outside of the middle of the city and see what it's like to actually live here," Sweitzer-Lammé says.

This is a great option if you have friends coming to town, especially for lunch.

An added bonus: since you are walking, you can burn off some of those calories.

Loved the tour!

Such a great tour! We had a wonderful time and learned so much about the South Philly food scene (and some history too!) Highly recommend to both tourists and Philly natives.

Maddy is an excellent and engaging guide. Her knowledge of the area and recommendations for local eating establishments make this intimate tour a must do.

thank you so much!

This food tour was fantastic! Maddie, our guide, was so knowledgeable about the food history, culture, and neighborhoods of South Philadelphia. Her stops and food selections were well-planned and thoughtful and gave us a comprehensive sense of the gastronomic personality of the city. Highly recommend!

Thanks so much!

Maddie has the perfect blend of food and historical knowledge of Philly's food scene and how the neighborhoods in S. Philly evolved. Our family had a great day with her on a private tour and were surprised by each stop - some we had heard of and some we had not. There was a nice range of ethnicities in the mix and despite the cold December day, it was a nice walk around one of Philly's most iconic areas. She is a delightful tour guide and we highly recommend the Tiny Tables tour whether you're a visitor or a native!

Maddy is fantastic. She is warm, welcoming, and very knowledgeable. Whether you are a local or a tourist, you will learn something new about the Italian Market and surrounding area. The food portions were generous and delicious and the tour finished with a glass of wine (or non-alcoholic option) at the DiBruno Bottle Store. I would highly recommend this tour and will be bringing my future visitors!. Thank you for a wonderful experience, Maddy!

The tour was fun, educational, thoughtful, and most importantly, delicious. It showcases the amazing diversity and history of South Philly and its food scene in an extremely fun and approachable way. 10 out of 10, sign up immediately!

Fun and deliciousness makes for a great day!

Although we have spent a great deal of time in Philly, Maddy showed us some new spots that we will surely return to. From the start we learned about some historical notes we had never been aware of and the first stop was for a sweet treat! I’ve been on several foods tours in the past and none offered quite the same experience as this one. Lots of food, insider foodie info, restaurant history and opportunities to shop topped off with wine at the end made for a perfect combination to celebrate my mom’s BD with her. If you’re new to the area or even a local, you can’t go wrong with checking out this tour.

thanks so much for coming!

I live in Philly, but was excited to learn about another side of the Philly food scene. Maddy is super knowledgable about the restaurants and the people who run them. What was most exciting & memorable was the neighborhood history, geography, and community context she shared. The tour was super well executed. I’m sure some things didn’t go quite as she had planned during the day but she didn’t miss a beat and made sure we didn’t notice at all. Definitely recommend and excited to see what else she spins up.

If you are looking for a fun, alternative Philly tour, look no further than Maddy's foody tour. You will leave stuffed! The sampled food was outstanding and the insider tales were an added bonus.

Maddy was a knowledgeable and fun guide. Food was excellent and plentiful. A very relaxed tour . Well worth it.

thanks so much for coming along. it was lovely meeting you.

I've lived in the city for years and spent a fair amount of time in the Italian Market neighborhood, and I still learned a lot and visited places I'd never been (and never heard of). Our guide (Maddy) knows so much about the city and it's food culture. In addition to eating amazing food (and the food is really good), you're going to learn a ton about the history of the city and the restaurants and the restaurateurs working in the Italian Market. Our tour hit a few unexpected snags (it rained, someone arrived up late) and Maddy deftly guided us through the neighborhood with out a hitch. If this is your first time in Philadelphia, this tour is a great way to learn about one of the city's most famous food neighborhoods. If you're a local, this tour is a great way to see a new side of an area you've been to a hundred time. Either way it's a great way to spend a day. You'll leave with a new appreciation for the city's history and about a dozen restaurant recommendations for anything and everything you could want.

thanks so much for this thoughtful review. it was great to meet you!

Love loved the tour. Tourngiluide Maddy was so knowledgeable and fun! Already recommended this tour to friends.
