Tom Cruise Revives Hilarious 'Tropic Thunder' Character, Reveals the Secret Behind Dance Moves

Over 10 years after playing the character on screen in  Tropic Thunder , Tom Cruise brought Les Grossman back to life

Dave Quinn is a Senior Editor for PEOPLE. He has been working at the brand since 2016, and is the author of the No. 1 New York Times best-selling book, Not All Diamonds and Rosé: The Inside Story of the Real Housewives from the People Who Lived It.

Tom Cruise may have surprised fans at Comic-Con with the first trailer to his upcoming Top Gun sequel , but it was another movie in his illustrious catalog that Conan O’Brien asked about when Cruise appeared on the comedian’s talk show Thursday night.

In the episode, which was broadcast from the annual entertainment convention, O’Brien, 56, asked Cruise to step back into the shoes of Les Grossman — the skeevy studio executive Cruise played over a decade ago in 2008’s Tropic Thunder.

The actor, 57, was happy to oblige, showing off some of Grossman’s infamous dance moves.

Turns out, Cruise himself had pushed director Ben Stiller to incorporate those dance moves, as well as Grossman’s fat-suit, when he was first approached to play the role.

“I take classes all the time to learn things or I want to improve a skill, whether it’s singing, music — whatever subject I’m studying. So I take dance classes and I took hip-hop classes. And then what I find is, I’ll find a character to put that with,” Cruise explained on Conan, recalling how he told Stiller, ” ‘I’d love to play this character but I want to have fat hands and I’m going to dance.’ ”

“Sometimes with a character you just get an instinct about what you’re going to do,” Cruise added.

Stiller, according to Cruise, wasn’t completely on board with Cruise’s vision.

“For a couple of months he kept saying, ‘Maybe we don’t do the makeup. Maybe you just look like yourself,’ ” Cruise remembered. “And I said, ‘No, I need fat hands and I’m going to dance.’ ”

After the makeup was created, Cruise said finding Grossman was easy. “As you’re working on a character, you start becoming that character, you start discovering that character. And I just, I just started moving,” Cruise said, adding that Stiller was still confused. “There was no music. He was just looking at me like, ‘What’s happening.’ I was crushing Pepsi cans and Coke cans.”

Once Stiller added music to the scene though (specifically, Ludacris’s “Get Back”), he understood what Cruise wanted.

“He calls me the next day and cut it to that piece of music you see in the movie. And he said, ‘I get it, I get it, I get it. This is hilarious,’ ” Cruise shared.

Tropic Thunder earned Cruise a Golden Globe action nomination. The film also starred Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Jay Baruchel and Brandon T. Jackson.

Later on Conan , Cruise recited Grossman’s more colorful lines. “Stand back and literally f— your own face,” Cruise said, to the cheers of the crowd. “I will f— you up! I will massacre you!”

And though the next few movies Cruise has on his slate are action-based (including the aforementioned Top Gun: Maverick ), Cruise said comedy — and Les Grossman — will always have a special place in his heart.

“I love comedy,” Cruise said. “I used to write sketches when I was a little kid and would do imitations to make my mother and sisters laugh.”

“Les Grossman was a funny character,” he added. “That was a wild character. That was wild.”

Top Gun: Maverick is set for a June 26, 2020 release.

Why Tom Cruise Demanded Dancing And Fat Fingers For Tropic Thunder

Tom Cruise as Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder

Who could forget Tom Cruise 's legendary performance as Les Grossman in 2008's Tropic Thunder ? Not only did he invent the character , but he also almost got an entire movie centering around that character. How cool would that have been? It's no wonder Grossman ranks among Cruise's best characters ever . Cruise's genius, coupled with his innate ability to feel out characters before they're even fully fleshed out, helped turn Grossman into the phenomenon he is now.

Speaking to popular late-night host Conan O'Brien during “ ConanCon ,” Tom Cruise explained how the now-famous character came to be. After Conan showed a clip of Cruise's dance performance from the film's end credits, Cruise said that learning to dance and learning comedy were among many things he wanted to perfect. In his words:

I take classes all the time to learn things or I want to improve a skill… singing, music, something I’m studying. I take dance classes and I took hip-hop classes and then I’ll find a character to put that with.

Because Tom Cruise created one of Tropic Thunder 's best characters, he demanded that his input be put in to the finished product, and he was willing to learn whatever it took to get the job done. It was, and it was glorious. Les Grossman proved so popular and so in-demand that Cruise agreed to bring him to the MTV Movie Awards back in 2010. It's amazing what hilarious mid-credits dancing can do for your career.

After that earlier tidbit, Tom Cruise circled back to Les Grossman and said what everyone in the room (and probably on the planet) wanted to hear:

I said, ‘Look, I’d love to play this character, but I want to have fat hands and I’m gonna dance.'

Man, he's good. I mean, c'mon. Who doesn't love sausage fingers and a proclivity for outrageously bad dancing? The guy has a good eye for what the audience wants, and boy, does he deliver. I'd love to see more of him if the franchise is ever revisited. Here's to hoping it is!

In the last five or so years, Cruise has taken on more serious, more action-heavy roles, some of his more recent ones being Doug Liman 's American Made and the fourth, fifth, and sixth installments in the wildly popular Mission: Impossible franchise. He has always had remarkable range as an actor, a fact that his various film roles clearly reflect.

If you're itching for a new Tom Cruise performance, you can catch him in Top Gun: Maverick when it hits theaters in June 2020. Or, you know, you could just watch him in Tropic Thunder or any of the Mission: Impossible movies for the millionth time. It really doesn't ever get old and it satisfies two very different moods.

Mr Cruise launched himself into the high-energy choreographed routine alongside Jen , who was performing her single, Get Right.

Dressed in a barely-there sparkly mini dress and silver thigh-high boots, Jen wowed the crowds , while Tom, as Les Grossman opted for less than flattering high waisted tuxedo trousers and braces. Nice!

Katie Holmes was spotted laughing and cheering from the front row as the pair shook their booty and had the audience in stitches.

The dramatic routine ended when Tom gamely attempted (but didn't quite make) the splits.

Tom Cruise Reflects On Iconic 'Risky Business' Scene 40 Years Later: 'I Still' Dance In My Underwear

Leave it to Tom Cruise to top himself again and again! Tom told Access Hollywood's Scott Evans at the "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1" premiere in Rome over the weekend that when it comes to doing his own death-defying stunts, his reasoning is simple. "Well, you know, you never have to. But I want to," the icon said. "I want to thrill that audience, I want to do everything I can." Now 60, Tom has been dominating Hollywood for more than four decades and he went on to reflect on one of his star-making roles as it celebrates a major milestone. When telling Scott about the 40th anniversary of "Risky Business," Tom remembered filming the now-iconic dance scene and how grateful he is to have had it launch him into a new level of success. "[L]ook, I grew up dancing in my underwear in my house. Who didn't?" he smiled, adding, "[T]hat was a formative experience and I feel very lucky to have that opportunity, to be able to have that kind of script and that kind of material at that age." Though Tom only continues to prove himself as a powerhouse on and off camera, he's still in touch with his "Risky Business" roots! When Scott asked if he dances in his underwear from time to time today, Tom delivered a relatable answer. "Yeah, I still," he nodded. "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1" hits theaters on July 12.

Timothée Chalamet described a rallying email he received from Tom Cruise after the two star actors met.

The email came up in an  interview with GQ  after Chalamet revealed he was also inspired by Austin Butler’s commitment to “Dune Part Two.” Cruise also encouraged Chalament to hone his skills.

“After I met Tom Cruise, right after finishing the first ‘Dune ,’  he sent me the most wonderfully inspiring email,” Chalamet said. It included a Rolodex of sorts of all the experts he might need for stunt training. A motorcycle coach. A helicopter coach. “He basically said, in Old Hollywood, you would be getting dance training and fight training, and nobody is going to hold you to that standard today. So it’s up to you. The email was really like  a   war cry. ”

Chalamet revealed that he saw “Top Gun: Maverick” eight times while filming “Part Two” in the summer and fall of 2022. He even bought out a whole Budapest movie theater at $2 a seat to take the whole cast and crew to see the long-awaited sequel film.

“’Top Gun’ was just  hugely  inspiring to me last summer when we were making  Dune, ” he said. “Some of the crew were kind of scoffing at going, but I just thought it was one of the greatest films I’ve ever seen.”

In the interview, Chalamet also revealed he worked with Butler’s “Elvis” team in preparation for his portrayal of musician Bob Dylan in the 2022 biopic directed by James Mangold.

Tom Cruise Is Planning to Sing and Dance in an Original Movie Musical

He is also keen to revive his 'Tropic Thunder' character Les Grossman.

preview for Tom Cruise’s Career From “Risky Business” to “Top Gun: Maverick”

At the top of the list is an "original song and dance-style musical" which they will write as a starring vehicle for Cruise. While audiences might associate Cruise primarily with dramatic action roles, he has sang on-screen before. And no, that's not a reference to the terrible lullaby scene from the middling War of the Worlds remake. He was critically lauded for his pipes in the 2012 adaptation of the Broadway show Rock of Ages , in which he played a washed-up musician and performed impressive renditions of some hair rock anthems, including "Pour Some Sugar on Me" by Def Leppard and "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi.

No plot details have been announced about this new musical, although given Cruise's propensity for throwing himself into life-threatening stuntwork, it's likely he will train like a professional tap-dancer to get the moves right.

And speaking of stunts, another one of Cruise and McQuarrie's pending projects is the eighth Mission: Impossible movie, which will see Cruise "speed flying." They're also keen to create a brand new action franchise together. Most bafflingly though, they are reportedly excited about the prospect of bringing back Les Grossman, Cruise's scene-stealing character from the 2008 comedy Tropic Thunder .

Tom Cruise Says He Still Dances in His Underwear 40 Years After Risky Business

S ome things never change. Four decades ago, Tom Cruise starred in Risky Business , a film that still stands as one of the veteran actor's most popular movies. The film follows Cruise as a high school senior looking to have some fun while his wealthy parents are away on vacation. One particularly memorable scene features Cruise sliding across the floor and dancing in his underpants to the tune of Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock and Roll."

Ahead of the 40th anniversary of Risky Business this August, Cruise reflected on the film in a new interview with Access Hollywood . He recalled how he was just 19 years old when shooting the movie in 1982, though it would be released in theaters the following year. Given how iconic the dance scene from the film still is with fans, Cruise also spoke about his memories of when he was shooting it on the set four decades ago.

"I'll never forget that night, that day that I shot that scene," Cruise said. "Just, you know, he gave me the opening frame of that shot... [director] Paul Brickman, great filmmaker. He and I talked about it, [and] he said, 'Here's the choreography.' Look, I grew up dancing in my underwear in my house, who didn't?"

When directly asked if he still dances around in his underwear these days, Cruise replied with a smile, "Yeah, I still!"

The Dance Scene Taught Tom Cruise About Filmmaking

Cruise went on to explain how he had to figure out pulling off the famous slide that he does on the hardwood floor in his socks. The actor knew where he wanted to end up, and from there, he worked backwards to figure out just the right way to make it work. Getting there was just a bit of a challenge according to the actor.

"I saw the opening frame [and] I want to hit center frame," Cruise explained. "So, I tried to slide in my socks, it didn't work. So, I said, 'Well, let's just put [slippery] stuff down on the floor,' and I slid all the way across. I was like, 'That didn't work.'"

Cruise says that the solution was to put sticky spray on the spot where he needed to stop, and that's when the scene clicked into place, which taught Cruise a lesson about filmmaking that he still remembers so many years later.

"It was a learning experience for me, not just as an actor going through it, but then I spent a lot of time in the editing room... and I saw the shots, and looked at how, editorially, they're putting it together," Cruise remembered. "That was a formative experience. I feel very lucky to have had that opportunity to be able to have that kind of script, and that kind of material, at that age."

Risky Business was written and directed by Paul Brickman. Along with Cruise, the film starred Rebecca De Mornay, Joe Pantoliano, Nicholas Pryor, Janet Carroll, and Richard Masur.

Seen as prey … the Webb sisters in The Hills of California.

‘This is more than a #MeToo drama’: Jez Butterworth on his new play – and punching Harvey Weinstein

The playwright reveals how his clashes with the sexual predator haunt the most disturbing scenes of The Hills of California, his latest Olivier-nominated play about teenage singing sisters trying to make it big. Warning: contains spoilers

U ncle Tony went to America to seek his fortune and succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. “He was like this big CEO, the president of Coca-Cola America,” recalls Jez Butterworth of his relation, who even acquired an American accent as he made his way from Rochdale to master of the universe.

When Uncle Tony returned to visit the little house in St Albans that Butterworth grew up in, it was as if someone unspeakably glamorous had materialised in the living room. “He was magical,” says the playwright. “There was a glow to all things American in the late 70s for English people, certainly for my family.” But this return was also painful to little Jez because of how his father reacted. “I watched my dad change into someone who fawned over his brother. Like a complete personality change. I found it excruciating.”

This unsettling homecoming appears, transfigured, in Butterworth’s new, Olivier-nominated play The Hills of California . In it, for the best part of two hours, three Webb sisters have been trading machine-gun Lancastrian repartee in a faded Blackpool guesthouse in the long hot summer of 1976, while their mother lies dying from cancer upstairs.

But then something happens. Joan – the fourth sister, who blew off this coastal get-together and ditched her mother’s dream of transforming her girls into an all-singing, all-dancing Andrews Sisters knockoff – returns. As one of two characters performed by Butterworth’s real-life partner Laura Donnelly, Joan is a projection of American glamour, much like Uncle Tony. Imperious, wearing flared jeans and rhyming eye shadow, Joan even talks like an American. Blackpool has never seen the like. One sister, Ruby, instantly mutates from whip-smart woman to helpless drooler.

Transfiguring family events … Butterworth.

This is not the only moment in The Hills of California that sees Butterworth working through things in drama that he couldn’t cope with in reality. The death of his sister Joanna in 2012, from brain cancer at the age of 48, hangs over the play. “She had been diagnosed as terminal in 2010,” says Butterworth, speaking to me in the London conference room of theatre producer Sonia Friedman. “For the last six months, she was living in the cottage next door to the farmhouse in Somerset I lived in with my wife and young kids.” This was his first wife, film editor Gilly Richardson, and their daughters Mabel and Grace. “So what happens in the play – a family gathering at a deathbed – was based on something that actually took place. I lived through all of those moments.”

Real life provided material for The Hills of California in one further poignant way. In the second act, we flashback to the guesthouse in 1955. Mother Veronica Webb has arranged an audition with an American talent scout, who claims to have discovered Nat King Cole. As Dr Luther St Joan manspreads diabolically in his easy chair, Webb’s school-age daughters leap on to a table and perform Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy from Company B, shaking their tassled skirts and silken military epaulettes. It’s a pivotal moment – and it draws on Butterworth’s dealings with Harvey Weinstein.

Butterworth was working in Hollywood 25 years ago. “I was directing my first film.” This was the erotic comedy Birthday Girl, starring Nicole Kidman and Ben Chaplin. “I was sent to Hollywood to audition actors in the Peninsula Hotel. And most of those were the actors who later came out and said what they said [about Weinstein]. I didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t know then that he was somebody up to his neck in smashed dreams, in lives he had ruined. I was a man. No one was trying to fuck me or assault me. But that was my first experience of that world.”

Cut back to that audition in Butterworth’s play. Luther tells Veronica that her daughters’ act is past its sell-by date. Hasn’t she heard of Elvis Presley? Rock’n’roll is sweeping popular culture and a 1940s-style close harmony girl group has no place in such a libidinous future. And yet, Luther says, one of her daughters might have something. He asks Veronica to let Joan sing for him in private upstairs. Butterworth dangles the possibility that Luther rapes Joan and that Veronica, out of misplaced devotion, is complicit.

Adorable irritant … Butterworth co-wrote Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny with Phoebe Waller-Bridge in mind.

However, says Butterworth, The Hills of California is not his #MeToo drama. “I spend the vast majority of my day in a dreamworld pushing around ideas that don’t really relate to anything identifiably. To say this is a #MeToo play is like saying a rainbow is blue. There’s blue in it, sure.”

In any case, Butterworth has already settled his dealings with Weinstein – and not just when he punched the sexual predator . While working on Birthday Girl, Weinstein punched a producer he wanted to fire. Butterworth, who wanted the producer to remain, hit Weinstein in return. “If Harvey wants to start throwing punches,” said the British playwright, who boxed while studying at Cambridge, “he should know that I know what to do.”

In 2017, Butterworth read out a letter on BBC Newsnight . “Harvey,” it began. “My daughter is 11 years old and all her life has dreamed of being a performer. She attends a local drama group and loves to sing, dance and act. Were she one day able to realise those dreams, and had Ashley Judd and others not been brave enough to come forward, there’s every chance in a few years’ time she would have been taken to a hotel, duped by your staff, ended up alone with you, and chased round the suite by you, naked, masturbating, threatening her, terrifying her, for your own enjoyment.”

Butterworth, who has just turned 55, tells me of another meeting with Weinstein. In 1997, the producer attended a London screening of Mojo, the film version of Butterworth’s 1995 debut play. He was thinking of buying it. Like The Hills of California, Mojo unfolds in a milieu of music, money and sexual predation. In the film, Harold Pinter played a gangster and predator grooming a helpless young rocker. Butterworth quotes this sleazeball’s catchphrase: “Tickle, tickle.” When Pinter said those words in the film, Weinstein stood up and left. The Miramax mogul didn’t buy the film.

A 21st-century classic … Jerusalem, starring Mark Rylance, seated.

Butterworth met Laura Donnelly in 2012 when she starred in his play The River , alongside Dominic West. Donnelly has become his muse – and mother to his third and fourth daughters, Radha, seven, and Ailbhe, six. He wrote the leading role of Caitlin for her in his 2017 drama The Ferryman , a play set on a County Armagh farmhouse in 1981, at the time Bobby Sands and nine other republican prisoners starved themselves to death in the Maze prison. The drama turned on a missing brother and the arrival of an IRA power-broker, details culled from Donnelly’s family history.

He often writes this way. While working on his 2009 play Jerusalem, he imagined Mark Rylance as lead character Johnny “Rooster” Byron . This may be why the drama is regularly described as one of the best of the 21st century. “It’s like making a bespoke suit,” says Butterworth. “You’re making it for that person. And the best thing is, they’re helping you.”

It’s a little more complicated than that, though. When he and his brother John-Henry worked on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, they knew Phoebe Waller-Bridge was slated to play Indy’s goddaughter.

“That changed the way we approached the script. I thought of her, not so much as Fleabag, but as Katharine Hepburn.” As a posh but adorable plot-driving irritant? “Exactly! Imagining who you’re writing for has always been inspiring to me. Even if no one has been cast, I might imagine I’m writing a role for, say, Jimmy Stewart.”

His next challenge is to write a role for Cillian Murphy that’s so dazzling it will eclipse even the Irishman’s Oscar-winning turn as J Robert Oppenheimer. He and John-Henry are adapting Blood Runs Coal, Mark A Bradley’s book about the murders of union leader Joseph Yablonski, his wife and daughter ordered by United Mine Workers president, “Tough Tony” Boyle. Murphy will play Yablonski’s son, an attorney out for justice and revenge. “It feels Greek,” he says of the shocking story. “Often, when you’re writing, you’re bending bits of a story to make it feel Greek – and sometimes it’s just sitting there. This one’s just sitting there.”

There can be problems with writing roles for certain actors, though. When he and John-Henry wrote the script for Ford v Ferrari , the 2019 motor-racing flick, the two stars for whom they had tailored the script dropped out. “Matt Damon and Christian Bale do the most incredible jobs,” says Butterworth, “with parts that were written for Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.”
