Now streaming on:

I'm not sure I could pass a test on the plot of "Mission: Impossible." My consolation is that the screenwriters probably couldn't, either. The story is a nearly impenetrable labyrinth of post-Cold War double-dealing, but the details hardly matter; it's all a set-up for sensational chase sequences and a delicate computer theft operation, intercut with that most reliable of spy movie standbys, the midnight rendezvous under a street lamp in a chilly foreign capital.

Tom Cruise stars as Ethan Hunt, professional spy, whose assignment, which he chooses to accept, is to prevent the theft of a computer file containing the code names and real identities of all of America's double agents. It's not enough to simply stop the guy; Cruise and his team (also including Jon Voight , Kristen Scott-Thomas and Emmanuelle Beart ) are asked to photograph the enemy in the act of stealing the information, and then follow him until he passes it along. This process involves a check list of Cold War spycraft and cliches: Eye glasses with built-in TV cameras, concealed microphones, laptop computers, agents in elaborate disguise, exploding cars, knifings, shootings, bodies toppling into a river, etc. Of course the whole sequence centers around a diplomatic reception in Prague.

Because "Mission: Impossible" was directed by Brian De Palma, a master of genre thrillers and sly Hitchcockian wit (" Blow Out ," " Body Double "), it's a nearly impossible mission to take the plot seriously.

He is more concerned with style than story, which is wise, since if this movie ever paused to explain itself it would take a very long time.

There are so many double-reverses in the first half hour that we learn to accept nothing at face value (not even faces, since they may be elaborate latex masks). And the momentum of the visuals prevents us from asking logical questions, such as, is physically copying a computer file onto another disc the only way to steal it? (My colleague Rich Elias has written that the obvious solution for the CIA would have been to hire Robert Redford's team from " Sneakers " to commit an online theft.) "Mission: Impossible" is all slick surface and technical skill. The characters are not very interesting (except for Vanessa Redgrave , as an information broker, and Jon Voight, who expresses a touching world-weariness in a film too impatient for weariness of any kind). The plot is impossible to follow. The various strategies of Cruise and his allies and foes don't stand up under scrutiny. And none of that matters.

This is a movie that exists in the instant, and we must exist in the instant to enjoy it. Any troubling questions from earlier in the film must be firmly repressed.

De Palma is expert at sustained nonverbal action sequences, and there are three in the film: The opening scenario at the diplomatic reception; a delicate act of computer theft; and a chase in which a helicopter follows the high-speed London-Paris train into the Chunnel with Cruise and a bad guy clinging to the top of it.

The computer theft scene will ring a bell with anyone who has seen " Rififi " (1954) or "Topkapi" (1964), both by Jules Dassin , who became famous for his extended theft sequences done in total silence. "Topkapi" also used the device of suspending a thief from a hole in the ceiling, to avoid anti-theft devices on the floor. This time, De Palma gives us a computer "safe room" rigged so that alarms will sound at any noise above a certain decibel level, any pressure on the floor, any change in temperature. Cruise hangs in a harness while carefully inserting a blank disc and making a copy of the file.

Of course it's convenient that the decibel level is set high enough that it isn't triggered by the noise of a computer copying a disc -- which is precisely what it should be guarding against. Convenient, too, that the infra-red rays guarding the ceiling hatch can be so conveniently dealt with. And very convenient for the audience that the rays are made visible to a normal eye. If you want to see infra-red rays -- really -- exploited in a heist movie, have a look at " Grand Slam "(1968).

If the heist has been done before, and better, not even the James Bond films have ever given us anything quite like the ending chase sequence, with a bad guy in a helicopter flying into the Chunnel linking Britain to France. Earlier it's been established that the train through Britain is traveling so fast that Cruise, clinging to it, might easily be blown off. This will cheer the film's British viewers, who can forget for a moment that the Chunnel train goes that fast only on the French side, since the high-speed tracks on the British side have not yet been completed. (Inaugurating the Chunnel, Francois Mitter and wickedly described a traveler "Speeding through France and then enjoying a leisurely view of the British countryside").

No matter. The train goes fast, and the helicopter follows it right under the Channel, and De Palma's special effects (by Industrial Light and Magic) are clever for obscuring the scale involved, since a helicopter's blades would obviously not fit into the tunnel -- but then why am I quibbling, since the whole stunt is obviously impossible?

The bottom line on a film like this is, Tom Cruise looks cool and holds our attention while doing neat things that we don't quite understand -- doing them so quickly and with so much style that we put our questions on hold, and go with the flow. When the movie is over, it turns out there wasn't anything except the flow. Our consolation, I guess, is that we had fun going with it.

Meet the Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One cast: who's who in the action blockbuster

Tom Cruise is back, but who is joining him on the latest impossible mission?

Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Death, taxes and Tom Cruise starring in the Mission: Impossible franchise seem like certainties these days. The movie star once again reprises his role as Ethan Hunt in the latest edition of the blockbuster movie , but he's not alone, as quite the ensemble is helping to make up the Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One cast.

Cruise may always be the headliner, but the supporting casts for the Mission: Impossible movies have typically been pretty strong. From Jon Voight, Kristin Schott Thomas and more in the first Mission: Impossible movie to Henry Cavill and Angela Bassett appearing in Mission: Impossible — Fallout .

Which new characters are bound to make similar impressions in Dead Reckoning ? And what familiar faces are popping back up? Let's break down the major characters set to appear as part of the Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One cast and the actors playing them.

Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt

Tom Cruise on a motorcycle in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Ethan Hunt has saved the world numerous times already, pulling off incredible, death-defying feats to do so. The IMF (Impossible Mission Force) agent has become the leader of a small team that has become his defacto family — especially since he gave up his wife to keep her safe — and there is nothing he won't do to protect them.

Hunt has become one of Tom Cruise's most iconic roles, right alongside that of hotshot pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick , and one that he says he wouldn't mind playing until he's in his 80s (for reference, he is currently 61).

Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust

Rebecca Ferguson in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Ilsa Faust is a more recent member of the IMF team, joining them to stop Solomon Lane, the villain of the last two Mission: Impossible movies. She has formed a strong, potentially romantic, bond with Ethan since they began working together.

Ferguson first joined the Mission: Impossible franchise in Rogue Nation . Outside of the action franchise, movie fans will know her from Dune ( Part One and Part Two ), Reminiscence , Doctor Sleep and The Greatest Showman , as well as her series Silo on Apple TV Plus .

Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell

Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Luther has been one of Ethan's oldest allies and closest confidants. He helps Ethan keep things in perspective, but he is always there to support his friend.

Ving Rhames has been in all of the Mission: Impossible movies, although he just had a cameo in Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol . Some of his other famous roles include Pulp Fiction , Con Air , Out of Sight , Dawn of the Dead and Pirahna 3D .

Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn

Simon Pegg in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

The IMF's resident tech expert, Benji has been working with Ethan since the events of Mission: Impossible III . He may not be the most physical member of the team, but he has proved his worth again and again.

Simon Pegg is best known for his comedies with Nick Frost and Edgar Wright ( Shaun of the Dead , Hot Fuzz , The World's End ), but he has become a staple of the Mission: Impossible franchise, appearing in every movie since Mission: Impossible III .

Hayley Atwell as Grace

Hayley Atwell and Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Grace is a new character in the series. She becomes involved with Ethan and the rest of the IMF team as she has critical information regarding the threat that they are dealing with in the movie.

Hayley Atwell is no stranger to big-budget action franchises, having starred as Peggy Carter in the MCU, most notably Captain America: The First Avenger , Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and her own TV series, Agent Carter . She's also starred in the likes of Blinded by the Light , The Duchess and Conviction .

Esai Morales as Gabriel

Hayley Atwell and Esai Morales in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Gabriel is the main villain in Dead Reckoning . He has a past history with Ethan (though this is the first time that the character is making an appearance in the franchise), but now represents a dangerous force that threatens the status quo of the world.

Esai Morales has starred in a number of popular shows and movies over the course of his career, including How to Get Away with Murder , Ozark , NYPD Blue and La Bamba .

Vanessa Kirby as The White Widow

Vanessa Kirby in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

We learned in Mission: Impossible — Fallout that the White Widow has a connection to someone in Ethan's past, the criminal mastermind Max (Vanessa Redgrave). She's continuing her mother's legacy as a powerful arms dealer. Ethan double-crossed her in the previous movie, so where will things stand between them in Dead Reckoning ?

This is the second appearance for Vanessa Kirby in the Mission: Impossible franchise. The actress broke out with her performance as Princess Margaret in the first two seasons of Netflix 's The Crown but has since gone on to star in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw , The Son and Pieces of a Woman , receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for the latter.

Pom Klementieff as Paris

Pom Klementieff in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Paris is an enforcer for the Dead Reckoning villains, set to throw down against Ethan and the rest of the IMF team. Playing the new character is Pom Klementieff, who is best known for her role as Mantis in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. She has also starred in Ingrid Goes West and Spike Lee's Old Boy remake.

Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge

Henry Czerny in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Eugene Kittridge is a government agent that has long been associated with Ethan. Believing Ethan was a mole, Kittridge was the one that was trying to capture Ethan in the first Mission: Impossible movie. This is the character's first appearance since the original 1996 movie.

Henry Czerny is definitely most recognized for his role as Kittridge, but the actor has also appeared in Clear and Present Danger , The Ice Storm , The A-Team , Revenge , Sharp Objects , Ready or Not and, most recently, Scream VI .

Others in the Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One cast

Here are some other recognizable names set to appear in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One :

  • Shea Whigham ( Waco: The Aftermath ) as Jasper Briggs
  • Cary Elwes ( The Princess Bride ) as Denlinger
  • Greg Tarzan Davis ( Top Gun: Maverick ) as Degas

Rob Delaney ( The School of Good and Evil ), Indira Varma ( Obi-Wan Kenobi ), Charles Parnell ( Top Gun: Maverick ) and Mark Gatiss ( Operation Mincemeat ) to date have unspecified roles.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One plays everywhere as of July 12.

He also spoke of his training preparing him for action movies like this one, and his passion for making movies overall.

“My goal as a child, since I was little, was to make movies and travel the world. And not just be a tourist but to work in that world and live there and understand their culture,” he said. “You look at my movies I’ve been able to have that because of everyone here that you’ve allowed me to entertain you.”

Anticipation is at a fever pitch for Dead Reckoning – Part One with plenty of action (including that car chase that takes place here at the Piazza di Spagna) and Cruise’s signature envelope-pushing stunts. After last year’s massive Top Gun: Maverick , having Cruise back as Hunt, a character he first began playing 27 years ago, feels almost like a spiritual sequel to that $1.5 billion grosser.

McQuarrie spoke about the chase on the red carpet today.

In Mission , Hunt and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: To track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future, and the fate of the world at stake, and dark forces from Ethan’s past closing in, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission – not even the lives of those he cares about most.

Pegg, who plays Benji Dunn, said on the red carpet that the danger in the Mission movies is real.

'Mission: Impossible 8': Release Date, Cast, Filming, and Everything We Know So Far

Ethan Hunt's next mission is currently on hold.

Quick Links

Does 'mission: impossible 8' have a release date, will 'mission: impossible 8' be in theaters, who is returning for 'mission: impossible 8', who are the new cast members in 'mission: impossible 8', what will 'mission: impossible 8' be about, who is making 'mission: impossible 8', when and where did 'mission: impossible 8' film.

Editor's Note: The following contains full spoilers for 'Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning' Fans of the Mission: Impossible franchise have been eagerly awaiting the next chapter in Ethan Hunt's story in Mission: Impossible 8 .

It's honestly amazing that the Mission: Impossible series has been able to up the ante with every installment since the original 1996 film. Each installment somehow ends up being more exciting than the last and adds its own flavor of action spectacle to keep the franchise fresh and exciting. With a solid foundation formed by Mission: Impossible 1996, we got high-speed motorcycle chases in Mission: Impossible II , a terrifying villain in Mission: Impossible III , a Burj Khalifa-scaling triumph in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol , a stealthy espionage treat in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation , and a gripping nuclear prevention tale in Mission: Impossible - Fallout .

Ethan Hunt's latest mission, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning , might be the best installment in the long-running series yet. In a surprisingly topical tale about the dangers of Artificial Intelligence, Ethan and his team are tasked with finding and destroying a rogue AI known only as The Entity. The resulting globe-trotting journey leads to some incredible action setpieces and more than a few shocking twists and turns.

While the second half of the epic search for The Entity undoubtedly makes Mission: Impossible 8 one of the most anticipated projects of 2025, although moviegoers will have to wait a bit longer than expected for Ethan Hunt's next mission. To learn more about the second part's cast, release date, production status, and more, here is everything we know so far about Mission: Impossible 8 (queue fuse-lighting sequence).

Editor's Note: This piece was updated on April 24, 2024.

Mission: Impossible 8

Mission: Impossible 8 is set to release on Friday, May 25, 2025 . The film has gone through numerous delays, having previously been scheduled for release on August 5, 2022, November 4, 2022, July 7, 2023, and June 28, 2024.

While the initial two delays were because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused both Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning to constantly be delayed as well, the latest setback was because filming had been halted by the SAG-AFTRA strike .

There's a reason why Tom Cruise's catchphrase of "See you at the movies" has become so prevalent. With Top Gun: Maverick and the Mission: Impossible franchise being such massive box office hits, you better believe that Mission: Impossible 8 will be premiering exclusively in a movie theater near you. After the previous movie lost its IMAX screens after one week due to Oppenheimer , Mission: Impossible 8 will be receiving a three-week IMAX exclusive releas e.

After the film's theatrical run concludes, Mission: Impossible 8 will more than likely be joining the rest of the franchise entries on Paramount+ for a streaming release.

If, by chance, you still haven't seen Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning , you can stream the movie on Paramount+.

Unsurprisingly, global action superstar Tom Cruise will once again be reprising his role as IMF Agent Ethan Hunt. The actor's world-famous tenacity for doing his own stunts has made him one of modern cinema's most famous figures. Also set to return to assist Ethan in his quest for The Entity are Captain America: The First Avenger standout Hayley Atwell as Grace, Hot Fuzz star Simon Pegg as Benji, and Pulp Fiction icon Ving Rhames as Luther. Also on the cast list is Doctor Sleep star Rebecca Ferguson as the fan favorite Ilsa Faust, but given how her character's story goes in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning , that may not be the case (unless there is a flashback sequence or Ilsa's death was a fakeout).

Other characters expected to return are the antagonists of the film, such as Essai Morales ( La Bamba ) as Gabriel, Vanessa Kirby ( Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw ) as The White Queen, and Pom Klementieff ( Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ) as Paris , the latter of whom may return as a redeemed ally after barely surviving her wounds in Part 1 . Also likely returning are Part 1 's deuteragonists, including Shea Whigham 's ( Kong: Skull Island ) CIA agent Jasper Briggs, Greg Tarzan Davis ( Top Gun: Maverick ) as CIA agent Degas, Charles Parnell ( Top Gun: Maverick ) as NRO, and Henry Czerny ( Clear and Present Danger ), reprising the character of Kittridge, who debuted all the way back in the first Mission: Impossible . Kittridge isn't the only familiar face from a past film returning this time either, as Rolf Saxon ( Tomorrow Never Dies ) is reprising his role as William Donloe - another character who hasn't been seen since the first film. Also likely returning in flashbacks is Mariela Garriga ( NCIS ) as Marie - the mysterious woman from Ethan's past who Gabriel killed.

The returning cast is already massive, but even more new faces are joining the second chapter. This includes Emmy Award-Winner Nick Offerman ( The Last of Us ) as Sydney, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Holt McCallany (Mindhunter) as Bernstein, the Secretary of Defense. Also joining the cast in undisclosed roles are Emmy-Award Winner Hannah Waddingham ( Ted Lasso ), Academy Award nominee Janet McTeer ( The Menu ), Lucy Tulugarjuk , Katy O'Brian ( Love Lies Bleeding ), and Tramell Tillman ( Severance ).

While an official plot synopsis has not yet been released, Mission: Impossible 8 will almost certainly be continuing Ethan Hunt's search for The Entity, even though the world's governments and other third parties are trying to stop him. Ethan is also likely seeking retribution against Gabriel, who has now murdered two people very close to him. It's an epic conclusion that will likely see Ethan bring along old friends and potentially meet new enemies.

The film was initially set to be titled Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two , but this is now subject to change. Only time will tell if Paramount decides to remove the "Part One" from the seventh installment.

Much of the behind-the-camera crew from Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning will be returning for Mission: Impossible 8 . This includes writer/director Christopher McQuarrie , who has become a franchise veteran after directing Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation and Mission: Impossible - Fallout prior to the Dead Reckoning films. McQuarrie also shares screenwriting credit with Band of Brothers scribe Erik Jendresen .

Also attached to return are composer Lorne Balfe ( Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves ), cinematographer Fraser Taggart ( Robot Overlords ), editor Eddie Hamilton ( Top Gun: Maverick ), and production designer Gary Freeman ( The Witches ).

In an interview with Collider, McQuarrie revealed that most of Part 2 has already been completed , but there are still some major set pieces that have not been filmed yet. However, production was not able to be completed before the initiation of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Filming has since picked back up, and photos from the set made their way online in late March 2024 .

In  Dead Reckoning Part One , the last Mission film to hit theaters, Cruise  returned as IMF agent Ethan Hunt, a role he originated in the 1996 film based on the popular television series and he has carried over films that have collectively crossed some multiple billions at the global box office. The seventh film saw the return of IMF director Eugene Kittridge, played by Czerny, who became the director of the CIA. “For a series now well into its third decade — and continuing next summer with  Dead Reckoning Part Two  —  Mission: Impossible  has remained remarkably consistent,” reads The Hollywood Reporter review of that film .

Mission: Impossible 8 ( no longer titled Dead Reckoning Part Two ) is dated for May 23, 2025.

Tillman earned a SAG and Spirit Award nomination for his role in Severance , where he starred alongside Adam Scott, Patricia Arquette and John Turturro; he will return for the second season of the series. I'm not sure I could pass a test on the plot of "Mission: Impossible." My consolation is that the screenwriters probably couldn't, either.
