Best of Greece (Base, Summer, 8 Days)

Jeff was not very helpful. He walked very fast and didn’t wait for me to catch up. Some people in the group walked with me, otherwise I would have been lost. Also, no one picked me up at the airport. I had to take a taxi to the hotel. It cost me 38 Euros!

Classical Greece (9 destinations) Tour

Classical Greece (9 destinations)

This was a great tour! It requires quite a bit of travelling to make it to all the important mainland locations but was well worth it. The days were filled but never felt rushed and everything was well-organised. Our local guide, Maria, was a fountain of knowledge and a true pleasure to listen to and get to know over the week. She also made an effort to take us to local workshops and restaurants, ensuring that our spending money went into the local economy and our souvenirs were all authentic Greek handcrafts! The accommodation was variable, and one of the hotels could have been a bit cleaner but the bed was still comfortable. By the end of the week the hotel dinner buffets seemed to be pretty similar and blurred together, so pace yourself as often there isn't an alternative option anywhere nearby. Overall a fantastic trip that I would (and have already) recommend to anyone interested in learning more about the cultural history of Greece!

The Best of Greece Tour

The Best of Greece

The tour covered all aspects of Classical Greece as well as Mystras and Meteora. The latter was out of this world scenically and we were given a good talk on Greek Orthodoxy. I SPENT the free day in Athens visiting two museums: the Acropolis and the Byzantine. Finally, the last night was an excellent send off with a meal and Greek dancing. Our guide, Marieke, was superb, friendly and most helpful. She also has a good knowledge of Greek mythology when she told us stories on the bus. Matthew Kennon

Taste of Greece Tour

Taste of Greece

The small group size (24), excellent tour guide (Matt) & very skillful driver (Tasos) were the most important factors in allowing us to truly enjoy Greece - its people, its history, its language, its food & drink, its amazing sights such as the monasteries of Meteora & so many more. YASSAS to all our new friends on the tour and ευχαριστώ Matt and Tasos for keeping us safe !!!!

5 Day Group Tour in Delphi, Meteora, Mykonos, Delos, Santorini,

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Delphi, Meteora, Santorini and Mykonos. The initial pick up at the beginning was a little confused, but was quickly resolved and on d we were on our bus, everything worked like clockwork! The hotels were all comfortable and well positioned, especially in Meteora and Mykonos. Our hotel in Athens had the added bonus of a rooftop view across to the Acropolis, simply stunning at night!

Greek Island Adventure Tour

Greek Island Adventure

This is suppose to be a 10 day Island Hopper tour. 3 days in each location. We actually spent 1 day in Athens. Complained to Globus and got this ridiculous answer back from them. "Please know the itinerary does state Day 1 arrive in Greece, on Day 2 that is a full day in Athens then Day 3 you leave Athens to continue your vacation." We arrived after 6:00 PM on Day 1 and yes, they did our air. Day 3 we also left very early in the morning. Can't see how that is 3 days. Be very careful booking with them.

Wonderful trip! It was well organized and we met a lot of terrific people.
everything was well organized and the tour guide was excellent. Some of the hotels were not as good as the others even though they were part of the chain Amalia. The last Amalia hotel was not good and Hotel Europa was less good. The other hotels were excellent. Thank you
The attractions were fantastic. Paul, our tour director was knowledgeable of the places that we visited. He's organized and on-time. He's funny which makes our tour more enjoyable. The accomodations were great!

Explore the ancient capital of Athens

Often dubbed the cradle of Western civilisation, Athens was arguably the most influential city of ancient times. Contemporary meets antique in a city both drenched in world history and brimming with a modernity. You’ll discover thermal lakes, buzzing beachside neighborhoods and some of the world’s oldest ruins.

Visit the ancient Olympic site in Olympia

The birthplace of the Olympic Games, Olympia first became known to the world in 776 BC, when the very first games were held. Visit this world-famous ancient site that was also a holy place of worship for Zeus, the Greek god, surrounded by lush forestry in a rolling valley.

See the ruins of the Temple of Apollo

Reachable by a day trip from Athens, the Temple of Apollo at Delphi was rebuilt numerous times before settling into the historic site it inhabits today. Marvel at the remaining sandstone columns and decayed limestone that remind us of the past it endured over many thousands of years.

Dine 'Meze Style' in Psyri, Athens

Most travel guides will have you visiting Plaka for Greek food and nightlife, but authentic eateries are best found in the nearby neighborhood of Psiri. Between no-frills bars and dusty antique shops, you will find traditional mezze-style eateries and a boutique energy that pays tribute to Greece’s culinary heritage.

Visit Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Meteora

One of Greece’s most popular tourist attractions, it’s easy to see why so many flock to the spectacular rock formations of Meteora. Marvel at talents of both man and Mother Nature at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Byzantine monasteries that float around the summits.

Our top 5 things to do in Greece

Food and history form the basis of Greek culture and play a big role in all our trips to Greece. With Trafalgar, we'll showcase the best this country has to offer from sun up to dreamy sundown.

Acropolis Museum

The Acropolis Museum is found at the foot of the western world’s most important ancient site. Unpeel layers of history as you wander the halls of the past and gaze up at the dazzling site itself through glass walls. Allow yourself at least half a day to take in the enormity of this museum.

Remains of Agamemnon's Royal Palace

Tours in Greece are scarcely complete without a visit to this iconic archeological site, where you will find the remains of Agamemnon's Royal Palace, one of the world’s best-preserved fortresses. Glance up and admire unrivalled panoramic views of the countryside, once the Greek civilisation’s major military centres.

Athens War Museum

Opening its doors in 1975, the Athens War Museum documents the country’s past conflicts and military artefacts. In honor of those who fought for Greece’s freedom, the museum showcases four grand floors of past-to-present history. History enthusiasts will find no shortage of awe within these walls.

Best museums in Greece

Though often visited for Greece island hopping, the enchantment of this Mediterranean jewel extends beyond the sapphire waters. With Trafalgar, you’ll venture under the layers of Greek culture by visiting its many fascinating museums.

Standing its ground as one of Greece’s most famous main meals, moussaka is a wholesome and delectable combination of eggplant, ground meat, onion and béchamel sauce. Try this dish a few times during your visit; there are family variations that get passed through generations.

Souvlaki is street food at its very best. A simple preparation of skewered meats and vegetables, it’s the flavoring that makes this snack a pride of the nation. For the most authentic souvlaki, sample if from a street vendor wrapped up with condiments, salad and thick hot chips.

Kolokythokeftedes

The small fried balls of kolokythokeftedes can most aptly be compared to zucchini fritters with fetta cheese. Often ordered in summer with a side of tzatziki, these delicious bites are a great starter to any meal. Learn from the locals and snack on kolokythokeftedes alongside a glass of wine in the warm afternoon sun.

Best food in Greece

From an array of antipasto dips like taramasalata and tzatziki, to heavier main courses of grilled meats and fresh fish, Greek cuisine is internationally recognized for its deliciousness. Trafalgar will take you to the heart of Greece’s culinary traditions, each mouthful and mealtime an utter treat.

What to pack for Greece

People packing for a tour

Long, breathable pants or skirts

Often warm all year around, and extremely hot during summer, long, light clothing is ideal for daytime sightseeing in Greece – particularly when visiting historic religious sites that require modest attire.

A stainless steel water bottle

Whether you’re basking ocean-side beneath the hot sun or trekking the ancient monuments of this distinct country, you’ll need to stay hydrated. Stainless steel bottles keep your water cold for eight hours while treading lightly on the environment.

Walking shoes

Comfortable shoes are a must when you’re out from morning to night. Choose sturdy, open-toe walking sandals or closed toe sneakers to ensure you can walk effortlessly for hours.

A wide-lens camera

From coasts spanning miles of sea to some of the world’s most spectacular ruins, Greece is bursting with scenes you will want to remember forever. A wide-lens camera will make it easier to capture the views.

Sun protection

Whether it’s SPF50+ sunscreen, a wide-brimmed sun hat or long-sleeved clothing, some form of sun protection is crucial when visiting this popular summer vacation spot.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and toiletry bottles.

Best time to visit.

Greece generally has a mild, Mediterranean climate, with July and August being the busiest months for tourism. With warm weather and plentiful sunshine, this is a great time for visiting the islands, swimming in the sea and lazing on the beach. Summers are generally hot and dry, with daytime temperatures rising to 85°-100°F ( 30°-38°C ).

By mid-September, temperatures begin to fall and crowds thin, but it can still be hot. The weather remains generally calm and balmy well into October. If you can't get to Greece in the spring, and beaches are not your primary goal, this is a fine time to visit. By late October, ferry service and flights are cutting back and most facilities on the islands begin to close for the winter. But the cooler atmosphere makes   Athens   and the mainland all the more pleasant.

Culture and customs

Greece’s culture is very much influenced by its ancient past. The hallmarks of Western medicine, philosophy, drama, and government can all be attributed to the mighty ancient Greek civilization – which is an incredible source of national pride. Traditional music and dance are still valued and used to commemorate celebrations throughout the year. The circle dance, for instance, dates to the Byzantine period. Even contemporary cuisine has its roots in ancient tradition.

Greeks place a high amount of value on ‘kefi’, which loosely translates to joy or passion. Life is meant to be lived to the fullest. For this reason, meals are leisurely and social gatherings are frequent, typically involving drinking, dancing and lively discussion. Common Greek customs, like smashing plates and dancing with a glass of water on your head, are considered expressions of kefi.

With more than 90% of the population being Greek Orthodox, religion plays an important part in everyday life. Religious festivals and ceremonies are commonplace, both in the mainland cities and small rural villages. Christmas and Easter are particularly important dates on the calendar, although religious celebrations are not limited to these times as there are daily, weekly and annual rites and rituals performed all throughout Greece’s mainland and islands.

Food and drink

Greek cuisine favors simplicity and relies primarily on fresh local produce. Think vegetables, beans, nuts, and grains; grilled meats and fresh fish; parsley, garlic, dill, and mint; and punchy cheeses such as feta, kefalotyri, and halloumi. Drinks-wise, locals will savor a Greek coffee at a kafeneio (coffeehouse) or glass of anise-flavored ouzo (diluted with water) at an ouzeri – along with a couple of mezedhes (appetizers) – for hours. There’s also tsipouru (fermented distilled grape skins), raki (a tsipouru from Crete), and retsina (white wine flavored with pine resin).

Geography and environment

Sharing land borders with Albania , Bulgaria , Turkey, and Macedonia , Greece is located in Southern Europe and is surrounded by the Ionian, Mediterranean, and Aegean Seas. Consisting of the mainland peninsula and an archipelago of more than 3000 islands, Greece is typically mountainous, containing peaks, karsts, and canyons all over. Despite the mountainous topography, there is much arable land in Greece with small-scale farms successfully producing olives, peaches, melons, grapes, tomatoes, and grain for export and local use.

Greece’s highest peak, Mount Olympus, is famed for being the dwelling place of the 12 ancient gods in Greek mythology. The islands are mostly uninhabited and are formed in small chains (called archipelagos) within the Aegean Sea. Santorini , Mykonos, and Corfu are among the more popular islands with tourists, though Crete and Evia are the largest islands.

History and government

Early history.

The early history of Greece is among the world’s most fascinating, and like the other ancient civilizations of Egypt and Rome, Greece has many monuments still standing after centuries. The Greeks have been both the conquerors and the conquered, withstood the Plague and other natural disasters, and birthed some of the greatest literature, scientific developments, mathematical formulas, and thought movements.

Recent history

In 1821, the Greeks fought against Ottoman rule during the Greek War of Independence, which resulted in Greece being recognized as an autonomous region in 1828. This was a time of great upheaval for the Greek people, with political assassinations, battles, and plundering. After autonomy was granted, many years of change followed, with continued war and confrontation alongside intermittent periods of relative peace. The two World Wars had a profound effect on Greece, with many battles fought in Greece during the early 1940s (during the Axis occupation). Athens was liberated from this occupation in 1944 and the Greek government was restored. Greece joined the United Nations (as a founding member) in 1945 and NATO in 1952. During this time, many Greeks started moving to other parts of the world in a mass wave of widespread migration. The USA , Australia, and Europe were popular destinations in this move, which saw hundreds of thousands of Greeks immigrate to other lands. In 2004, Athens successfully hosted the Summer Olympics once again. Yet more recently, Greece has come under the shadow of the European debt crisis which has crippled the economy. Despite this, the spirit of the Greek people endures as it has for eons.

Shopping hours vary throughout Greece. Stores in large cities and tourist areas are typically open from 9 am to 9 pm, while shops in other areas close around 2 or 3 pm and reopen between 6 and 9 pm three days a week (Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday). Most stores are closed on Sundays.

Things to buy in Greece

1. Komboloi (Worry Beads)

These stress-relieving resin beads are meant to be turned through your fingers as you muse over life. With roots deep in ancient Greek cultural tradition, they make a great souvenir for friends wanting a slice of authentic Greece.

2. Botanical Skincare

Greece is home to many brands of premium, organic skincare. Stock up on luxurious olive oil soap or enriching yogurt-based moisturizers before you head home.

Travel safely and ward off evil by attaching a Mati (an ‘Evil Eye’) to your backpack. They’re cheap, available almost everywhere in Greece, and are a great reminder of your travels in the Aegean.

Whether you prefer gold, silver, amber resin or colorful beads, Greece has a huge variety of jewelry on offer. Prices are typically lower than in many other parts of the world, so it’s likely you’ll be able to snap up a few bargains.

Festivals and events in Greece

The Greeks have been partying since the dawn of Western civilization. Take Epicurus – he dedicated his life to seeking out pleasure, creating a philosophy now known as Epicureanism. As you travel through Greece you’ll encounter religious celebrations – Greek Orthodox is the main player here – that span the nation, as well as smaller celebrations that are regional affairs or isolated to particular islands. Expect food, drink, dancing and music, and plenty of throwbacks to the ancient Greeks. The only Greek tragedy is that you can’t fit every festival in.

Can I drink the water in Greece?

Drinking the water in Athens and Thessaloniki is safe unless otherwise marked. On the islands, however, the water may not be suitable to drink.

For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Greece?

Credit cards are widely accepted in  Greece , particularly in the tourist areas. It’s actually a legal requirement, as a response to the financial crisis, that working Greek citizens aged below 65 have a credit card so most hotels, shops, cafes and restaurants should offer the option of paying by credit card.

It’s still worth having some euros on hand, if only to tip the bartender at your favorite island bar and guarantee quick service all evening.

What is ATM access like in Greece?

ATMs can be easily found in cities and towns across Greece, including on the Greek Islands.

What is the weather like in Greece?

Greece’s coast and islands enjoy a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and windy, rainy winters, while the inland regions have a more continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. In the northern mountains, close to the Bulgarian border, the winters are cold with heavy snowfall , while the summers are relatively mild.

What public holidays are celebrated in Greece?

  • 1 Jan: New Year’s Day
  • 6 Jan: Epiphany
  • Feb/Mar: Clean Monday
  • 25 Mar: 25th of March
  • Mar/Apr: Good Friday/Easter Monday
  • 1 May: Labor Day
  • June: Orthodox Holy Spirit Monday
  • 15 Aug: Dormition of the Holy Virgin
  • 28 Oct: The Oxi Day
  • 25 Dec: Christmas Day
  • 26 Dec: Synaxis of the Mother of God

Please note that Greece public holidays may vary.

Is Greece safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Greece is one of the most popular LGBTQIA+ holiday destinations in the world, with a long history of same-sex relationships dating back to Sappho, the Greek poet, whose home island of Lesvos has become a pilgrimage site for lesbians. Though same-sex marriage is not legal, marriages performed in the EU have been recognized since 2018 and discrimination against sexual orientation or gender identity is banned by law.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Greece accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Though access to sights and hotels has improved in Athens over recent years, Greece is a difficult destination for travelers with disabilities. It’s a hilly, rocky place covered in cobblestones, particularly on the islands, and the economic situation has meant that there are minimal public funds to improve the situation.

If you do live with a visual, hearing, or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you, and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Greece?

What to pack for Greece will depend on where you're going and what time of year you decide to visit. Comfortable walking shoes are essential all year round, as is a jumper in case a cool wind blows.

If you visit in summer, you’ll need light, breathable clothing, sunglasses, a hat, swimwear and sandals.

If you’re heading to the mountains on the mainland, it’s best to be prepared for everything as the weather can change quickly.

What are some common phrases to learn before traveling to Greece?

Greek is a very difficult language to learn. However, it's easy enough to master a couple of common words such as 'hello' (yah-soo) and 'please' (para-kah-LOE). Not only will this help you communicate with the locals, but it'll allow you to form a deeper connection to the places you're visiting and the people you meet along the way.

How many islands are there in Greece?

There are roughly 6,000 islands and islets in Greece, of which only about 200 are populated. Each island offers spectacular views of the surrounding seas, golden beaches to lie out on, and ancient old towns full of fascinating sites.

How will I travel around Greece?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Greece, you may find yourself traveling by:

Live like a local resident by hopping on a local bus. Cheap, efficient and fast, it’s a great way to get around Greece’s busy cities.

Some of Greece’s most postcard-worthy scenery is best viewed from the water. Take in awesome views of quaint fishing villages, gorgeous   beaches  and the turquoise Aegean Sea as you hop between Greece’s famed islands aboard a ferry.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

What is it like traveling on a small group tour?

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or you’re about to embark on your first trip, traveling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organizing amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), traveling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

Does my trip to Greece support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Greece directly support our foundation partner, Amurtel .

Amurtel provides a safe space for refugee and migrant women and children in Greece. Donations from our trips help Amurtel provide displaced women and children with crucial education, emotional support and antenatal and postnatal care programs run by qualified midwives and expert consultants.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Does my Intrepid trip include airfare?

While our Intrepid trips include many modes of transport, from tuk-tuks to overland vehicles, bullet trains and feluccas, airfare to and from your home country is not included in your tour package.

Iconic Greece & the Cyclades

With some of Europe’s oldest civilizations developing in this country, impressive monuments still stand as proof of the empires that once called the ancient Panhellenic capital home. While the mainland’s architecture will take you on a trip through time, the Cyclades of Mykonos and Santorini will inspire you to cherish the simpler things in life. Endless blue seas, whitewashed buildings at dramatic angles and pink skies play backdrop to the distinctive cultural heritage and fascinating local traditions of a millennia-old and multifaceted civilization. Local favourites of fresh seafood, strong Ouzo liquor, sun-filled tomatoes, perfectly ripe olives and organic feta cheese will quickly become yours, too.

Our happy travellers rave about Greece

Every day was amazing.

Wow, everything was great. Every day was amazing and an adventure. The hotels were beautiful and the meals were fantastic. The tours were fantastic. So well-organized, so glad we did it. We loved Caroline (our Group Guru) and Harris (our National Guide in Greece). Fantastic trip! You see so much. A great vacation. Caroline made sure we were all ready and kept us secure. Loved all the tours, bus, ferry and flights. I wouldn’t change a thing. We were thrilled with the service, the excursions, and food.

Highlights for me include Olympia, lunches, Acropolis, Santorini, and Mykonos. Nice to have rest and leisure time in Mykonos and a glass of wine at the pool. I also always had fun times on the bus!

Fantastic & professional

Everyone was very friendly and easy to talk to. Joe Ennis (our guru) was absolutely fantastic and professional. Thank you so much! The food was great!! The sites we saw were right up my alley. I think just getting to know the people in the group was my favourite. I am not usually the most outgoing guy, but everyone was great.

Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly

The highlights were seeing so much of Greece and the fabulous food and wine! Our Group Guru, Joe, added humour, a sense of security and professionalism to our tour. He was very sensitive to all of our needs and wants, and always made sure we were taken care of! Our National Guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, it was a pleasure to have her as our guide!

Impressed with the staff

We are again most impressed with the Approach office staff as they were always so eager to answer our pre-tour questions and sent us very useful gifts. Hats off to you guys!

Will definitely book again!

We covered a lot of ground. Found out amazing things about Greece that I did not know 🙂 A great Group Guru! Funny and engaging, really connected with us. Loved all the excursions, will definitely book again!

I will definitely be booking more Approach Tours!

The Parthenon, Acropolis monasteries, all were excellent. The cave trip was really impressive. Thanks so much for a most memorable holiday! I will definitely be booking more Approach Tours! Well done all 🙂

Could not have run any smoother

Just returned from Greece with our Group Guru, Caroline. An amazing trip with a great group of people and guides to walk us back to the times of the Greek gods. Lots of activities and learning experiences that could not have run any smoother. Hotels were great, food was terrific and fattening. Kudos to the approach team for putting this one together!

Our adventure begins this afternoon in the capital of Greece, Athens. Meet with your brilliant Busabout guide and get acquainted with your fantastic fellow passengers. This afternoon you’re free to explore this vibrant, historical city (often referred to by scholars as the cradle of Western civilisation). Why not head to the sprawling Acropolis perched high above the city, home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites? Try basking in the wonders of the Parthenon and Temple of Hephaestus or visit the temple of the Goddess Athena, the symbol of Ancient Greece and the birthplace of democracy. We meet this evening for welcome drinks and cap off the day with an optional dinner at a local taverna.

Athens to Mykonos

We’ll start the day bright and early with a transfer to Piraeus Port. Along the way we’ll pass the islands of Syros and Tinos, making good time for an early afternoon arrival into the stunning Aegean gem of Mykonos. After checking in, head out and get tanning on the beach, or grab a delicious lunch at one of the beachfront cafes. This evening we meet for drinks and laughs at Paradise Beach, where your Busabout wristband gets you 2 for 1 cocktails! Later, your fantastic guide will take you on an optional orientation walk of the town, culminating in a sunset vantage over the famous windmills. Tonight, join us on a bar crawl to experience some of this amazing island’s unforgettable nightlife. - Breakfast included

Today’s your chance to buckle down and discover the heart of Mykonos. Wander its gorgeous, white-painted streets, explore the local establishments and delve into its rich history. Head to Paradise Beach and enjoy a relaxing day soaking up the sun on the pristine sands, cocktail in one hand, mystery novel in the other. Teleios (that means perfect)! However you choose to spend your day, you’re bound to have a phenomenal time in this paradisiac island. Tonight, we crank the party up to 11 at Paradise Beach, where Busabout passengers get discounted drinks. You can choose to keep the party going for an unforgettable night at one of the local, world-renowned super clubs. - Breakfast included

The sea beckons once more and our voyage demands to be continued, so we wave goodbye to Mykonos and set sail for the picturesque island of Paros. We’ll be arriving in time for a delicious local lunch, after which you’re free to enjoy the rest of the afternoon! Take in the island’s many beautiful sights and relax by the beach at this model Mediterranean town or head out for some well-earned retail therapy. This evening, enjoy an orientation walk of Parikia town, which includes a stop at the famous Church of 100 Doors. Tonight, we offer an optional authentic Greek experience consisting of traditional food, dancing, and (everyone’s favourite) plate smashing. Finish off this perfect day with an unforgettable night soaking up the vibrant atmosphere of Parikia town after dark. - Breakfast included

Another port, another chance to engross ourselves in new sights, sounds, and people. Feel free to join us for our optional Paros Boat Trip (often described as an epic day in paradise). Relax with an ice-cold beverage as we prepare a delicious BBQ feast and sail around the islands of Paros and Antiparos. Snorkelling gear is provided for the numerous swim stops should you want to explore the underwater realm of the Aegean Sea. Maybe we’re biased, but we truly feel this trip is not to be missed! Tonight, head out for a delicious dinner. Your guide will be more than happy to provide recommendations if necessary. Later, join us for some cocktails and karaoke. Sing the night away with your fellow passengers in vibrant, beautiful Paros. - Breakfast included

Paros to Santorini

Enjoy your last few hours in Paros whilst you can because we’ll soon be making waves on our trip to spectacular Santorini, where we’ll arrive in the afternoon. Head out and soak up the scenic views of the surrounding archipelago on the famous volcanic sands of Santorini’s Black Beach. This evening’s yours to savour, so feel free to head down to the beach for some drinks and dancing in one of the many fantastic local restaurants and bars. - Breakfast included

Time for your free day to explore spectacular Santorini! If you’re overwhelmed with all the goodies on offer, don’t forget you can always speak to your fantastic Busabout guide for insights into all of the unforgettable sights on this island of mythic beauty. Jump aboard our optional Sun-Tour-Ini to learn about the fascinating local legends on your way to the stunning cliffside town of Oia, Black Beach, Red Beach and the Capital Fira. Tonight, it’s time to tick off that bucket list by exploring some of the highlights of the island by night. We head to the beautiful Capital of Fira; an Instagrammer’s paradise. Enjoy a delicious local dinner with the famed Santorini sunset as your gorgeous backdrop. After, get stuck into a big Busabout night out with included welcome shots and revelry! - Breakfast included

Santorini to Ios

We depart in the morning for our penultimate destination: the truly stunning island of Ios. After a quick jaunt across the Aegean, we’ll arrive this afternoon in the final resting place of Homer (not Simpson). Get checked in, grab some lunch, and hit the beach where you can enjoy discounted water sports such as tubing, scuba diving, kayaking, or a free stand up paddle boarding taster––all thanks to your ever-trusty Busabout wristband! This evening we offer an optional raucous bar crawl to all of the best local watering holes. - Breakfast included

Ios is entirely yours today, so enjoy this Aegean paradise at your leisure. Soothe the remnants of last night’s revels with a refreshing dip at Mylopotas Beach and partake in some of the optional aquatic activities on offer. Explore the vacant village of Ios by day or head out into the surrounding hills for a short hike, where you’ll discover the beautiful hidden cove; the perfect spot for a picturesque dip. Tonight, we’ll blow the roof off this island as we head out into town for another epic pub crawl. New bars, new memories, same levels of Ios high jinks! - Breakfast included

Ios to Athens

As the sun rises over immaculate Ios it marks the end of our brief affair with the gleaming Greek isles. We check-out and depart this morning, making waves on our long voyage back to the cultural hub of Greece, Athens. Along the way, we’ll share a sea shanty or two and reminisce of the adventures had. We arrive into the capital in the early evening and prepare for our final night together. One last dinner is on the cards before we explore the local hangouts of the buzzing capital city! - Breakfast included

Today marks the end of our Greek island adventure, check-out is at 10am. Want to see more of Greece? Why not join the Busabout Greek Odyssey trip?

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: what is a hop-on hop-off athens bus tour and how does it work.

A Hop-on Hop-off Athens bus tour runs over a designated route to cover the city’s top attractions. No tour guide, you set your own itinerary with the flexibility to get off at the nearest designated stop. You’ll find all the stops are located strategically at all the major attractions, making your touring as hassle-free as possible. And then, when you’re ready to continue, return to a designated bus stop, show your pass, and hop back on the bus and onwards towards your next attraction.

Q: Where can I start the Athens Hop-on Hop-off bus tour?

You can start your tour at any of the designated bus stops. Look for your nearest stop to your hotel, and make sure to check out the route. There may be more than one route on offer, so it’s a good idea to plan ahead of arrival as there may be specific attractions you want to see. Check the tour website for details of the routes, attractions, bus stops and any changes. Also, whether your ticket covers all routes. Almost all will, but it’s worth verifying the routes before you arrive. See, a little preparation can go a long way.

Q: Are these guided bus tours?

That will depend on the tour provider. You’ll find that hop-on hop-off bus tours can be either live or audio-guided. Many will have a pre-recorded commentary that’ll share fascinating information about the history of Athens, its culture, and many places of interest. You’ll find that the audio commentary will be provided in various languages. English, French, German and Spanish are the most commonly used, but others may be available. Check the specific product page for full details of all the languages offered.

Q: What is the validity of the ticket?

tour will have validity from 24, 36, 48 to 72 hours. And the great thing is you can plan ahead as the vouchers are valid anywhere between 6 months to 1 year and can be used at any point during that period. Check the product page or bus tour operator for complete details.

Which Bus Tour Should I Choose?

A bus tour around Santorini will allow you to explore the island’s most beautiful and popular sights all in one day! Especially, for those visiting the island for a short period of time, it will be a perfect choice, as in a few hours you will set your eyes on scenic villages , stunning beaches like the Red and Black beach, and important historical sights. Not to mention the spectacular sunset in Oia that you will have the chance to witness at the end of some of the tours!

This is a brief guide on which bus tour you should choose based on your vacation plan , your interests , and your preferences. Some of the essential factors to consider are the duration of the tour and the level of privacy offered.

-Private Bus Tours: If privacy and comfort are all you seek, then a private bus tour is the ideal choice for you! Your personal vehicle will take you to all the top attractions of Santorini, and your own experienced guide will offer you useful information and insights into the history of the island.

-Duration: Whether you wish to spend an entire day exploring the island or just dedicate a few hours touring around, there are various tour options available. You can choose between full-day tours or 5-6 hour tours, private or you and your group, or shared with other people. You will get to visit the same spots in most of them, but the longer the tour, the more time you will have to spend at each location!

-Cruise ship visits: If your plan is to visit Santorini during a cruise, it would be advisable to arrange a private bus tour, which provides you with the flexibility to tailor your itinerary and starting time. As your time on the island will be limited and you will have to queue for the cable car, a bus tour is the most efficient way to make the most of it! Your personal guide will meet you at the top of the cable car and you will start your touring experience around the island. The tour will also end at the same spot.

-Wine Tours: For wine lovers and those who wish to meet Santorini’s rich history in wines, there are several bus tours available. All of them involve visiting some of the most well-known wineries on the island and experiencing wine tasting of various wine labels while sampling traditional local snacks.

Both know the island. The only difference is that a tour assistant cannot enter a museum or an archeological site. So if you would like a guide with deep knowledge of the history of the island and if you wish to explore a historical site, you should book a tour with a professional guide.

The easiest and most common way to reach Fira is by a cable car . It takes only three minutes. On the other hand, if you’re feeling adventurous and decide to walk to Fira, it’ll be 587 steps. Local donkey ride is another easy way to get there.

Important note: Please note that Gialos, the Old Port is nestled at the foot of a rocky cliff below Fira. If you decide to go by a cable car or on a donkey, you’ll have to pay 6€ per side of the ride.

The Central Bus Station of Kifissos in Athens

KTEL buses in Kifisso station in Athens Greece

Contrary to most countries in Europe, the most popular means of transport to travel around Greece is not the train but the bus. The rail network of Greece is not well-organized and slow and buses in Greece are used for most travel purposes between main Greek cities. Bus routes to most locations around Greece depart from the largest Greek cities ( Athens , Thessaloniki , Patra ) either directly or via a connection. There are also itineraries between Greece and other European countries, including Bulgaria, Romania and Germany.

Table of contents: • International Routes • National Routes • Athens Bus Stations • Buses in islands • Buses in the Mainland

Read more information about the buses in Greece (National and International routes), information about the central bus stations in Athens and links to many bus organizations around Greece and the islands.

International routes

Routes between Thessaloniki (Giannitsa) and other big towns of the Balkans and Europe are available every week. In fact, there are bus connections between Thessaloniki and Istanbul, Sofia and other Bulgarian towns, Bucharest, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Mannheim, Munich and Stuttgart. These buses depart from Macedonia Intercity Bus Station in Thessaloniki.

National Routes

There are buses from Athens to almost all towns in Greece. There are also regional bus stations that connect large towns with local villages of the area. These buses are green and they are served by KTEL , the company of suburban buses in Greece. In Athens, buses depart from two major stations in Athens, Kifissos and Liossion Stations. Some Greek islands also have small yet practical bus networks.

Bus stations in Athens

There are two main stations with buses reaching destinations outside Attica: Kifissos Station and Liossion Station, from where intercity buses depart. The bus station of KTEL Attikis lies in the Pedion Areos area, with buses heading to regions outside Athens but within the limits of Attica departing from there. Travelers can reach all three stations by public means of transport, namely the metro and city buses.

 • Kifissos Bus Station

Kifissos station is located on Kifissos Avenue in Egaleo. From there, buses depart to most parts of Greece, including Patra and Igoumenitsa which are connected to the Ionian Islands.

Access to the station: Visitors departing from the airport can board the X93 bus which heads directly to Kifissos bus station. Visitors starting from Athens can use one of the following buses: 420 from Piraeus station (Green and Blue Metro Line) 051 from Metaxourgeio station (Red Metro Line) 052 from Eleonas station (Blue Metro Line) All three buses stop at the bus stop outside Eleonas station (Blue Metro Line).
