The ball flight on offer here is fantastic, when hit out of the screws. It's arguably Tour Edge's best driver to date. Expect a soaring, tall ball flight even if you’re typically a low-ball hitter. At this price, it has compelling value too.

An adjustable, upscale driver yielding a high trajectory that feels and sounds mighty. At address, its clean looks are just begging you to let loose.

Some may desire more alignment assistance.

In this Tour Edge EXS 220 driver review, we assess the looks and performance on offer before deciding the type of golfer it will suit best.

Tour Edge EXS 220 Driver Review

Part of the Exotics line from Tour Edge, which is the brand’s more high-end club series, this 460cc driver is relatively affordable compared to some of the best drivers on the market.

It has a stretched out look that many different players and abilities will like in a classic shape. Its carbon fibre crown construction (replete with a visible weave) and toe, titanium body and Beta Titanium clubface means weight is positioned to maximise forgiveness, collectively improving the consistency of launch and spin to boot.

tour-edge-exs-220-driver-review

Behind the clubface are 33 thick and thin mini-trampolines that make for a hotter and faster ball flight with better mis-hit performance. Tour Edge bills this as one of its fastest drivers ever.

The EXS 220 driver has an adjustable 9-gram back weight to create one of the highest M.O.I. ratings ever manufactured in a driver. Additional weights will be available in 3 grams, 6 grams, 11 grams and 14 grams to help dial in the preferred swing weight and trajectory. On the hosel, you can tune the loft up or down two degrees from the base loft.

What’s really awesome is how it helps alter your experience on the tee box. There’s the solid impact sound, due to a sound diffusion bar inside the clubhead - a concept borrowed from concert halls to enhance the richness of sound. In this case, it just makes impact seem powerful without being overly loud.

In our testing, we consistently achieved plenty of trajectory, along with tight dispersion. There are two stock shaft options. Ours had a Mitsubishi Fubuki HD50, which felt a little bit limp.

With the loft set at 10.5°, ball flight seemingly played at a trajectory several degrees higher. And that likely contributed to a distance that was satisfyingly competitive with anything else from other major brands. This is clearly the longest and most-powerful Exotics driver to hit the market yet.

Tour Edge EXS 220 Driver Review

James Miles

Tour Edge is not afraid to be different, and the creation of the EXS lineup in 2019 showed that in full force. The decision to provide all the tech of other clubs, but at a lower price was a bold one…and it worked. So, what do you do for a follow up? Well, most companies would ride the wave and make a tweak here or there, but that isn’t Tour Edge . Instead, the EXS 220 lineup offers more tech, some significant design changes, and are perhaps the best-looking golf clubs they have ever produced.

tour edge exs 220 driver review

Not a rehash of the highly successful EXS, the EXS 220 is its own entity in many ways. Larger profile that screams forgiveness, with the staggering MOI that Tour Edge has achieved, and backed that up in testing. More than that, it wants to put the ball in play, not the lowest spinner out there, but it packs a surprising punch. Probably the most complete driver Tour Edge has ever released.

Technology Tells a Story

Who doesn’t love a good story in golf equipment? Well, Tour Edge is writing one as well as anyone in golf. I’m talking beyond the better-than-almost-everyone pricing as well as the “48-Hour Custom Fit” delivery. While the price of the EXS 220 does come in at $349.99, $50.00 higher than the EXS, when you realize what is going on under the hood, it makes sense.

tour edge exs 220 driver review

First and foremost, the shape has changed, a lot . The 220 features a shallower face and much more elongated overall body than its predecessor. Those changes in particular were part of the goal David Glod and company had of increasing the MOI to produce one of the most forgiving drivers out there. By altering the shape, moving 9g of weight low and back, utilizing double the carbon fiber on the sole, and applying “Triple Carbon” which is lighter than that used on the EXS crown (this year it has a thicker appearing weave), they increased the MOI by 20%. What does that mean in layman’s terms? At a heel-toe MOI rating of 5,440 (max allowable is 5,900) you have a driver that is in a stratosphere with some very elite company.

tour edge exs 220 driver review

Believe it or not, the bigger story is in the metal. Tour Edge utilized “impact simulation software” to create what they believe is a better face, and better sound. Using this software, a face made up of 42 different diamond zones of variable thickness out of 8-1-1 Titanium as well as placing an internal “sound diffusion bar” that mimics concert hall acoustics, the idea was to take the established MOI and kick it up a notch with face driven speed and additional forgiveness wrapped in a more pleasant sound/feel than the EXS.

tour edge exs 220 driver review

Was all of this actually verified in terms of performance? Read on to find out!

Tour Edge EXS 220 Driver

I received the EXS 220 driver in the 9.5° head paired with the PX HZRDUS Smoke Yellow shaft in 6.0. For the gear heads at home, the head weighed out at 193g without the adapter, this includes the 9g weight in the back (Tour Edge is going to offer other weights), fully assembled the club swing weighted out dead on D3.

tour edge exs 220 driver review

Before we get to the ins and outs of what I saw in terms of the typical performance parameters, I do want to talk about the sound/feel since it was something specifically addressed in R&D this time around according to Tour Edge. To be blunt, the EXS 220 it isn’t a quiet driver. Initially, I was taken aback by the sound because it is more hollow and somewhat sharp than one might expect given the amount of carbon fiber in the head. That said, before sitting down to write this I hit the EXS for the first time in a long while and quickly realized the sound/feel here has improved drastically. It isn’t going to be a feedback that everyone loves, but I do think it will please far more than it bothers, plus, there is a sensation of power behind it all that makes it more enjoyable.

tour edge exs 220 driver review

While forgiveness is the big story from Tour Edge, and we will touch on that here in a moment, I think the biggest performance story here is the launch. In the two sessions worth of data recorded on the Foresight GC2 that are displayed throughout the article you will see 12.2° and 11.5° with both also hitting average peaks over 100 feet. That might not seem a big deal to some of you high ball hitters out there, but for me, in a 9.5° head those numbers are a very big deal. If I can elevate a driver like this, then it’s got some launch to it, and I nevereven had to adjust the adapter.

tour edge exs 220 driver review

Time for what everyone is waiting for – forgiveness talk.  To be real, with the 220 it is…well…real. I don’t like to draw comparisons with other clubs into my reviews, that isn’t how I roll, but that said this one offered some Max forgiveness. The diamond face combined with the elongated clubhead and high MOI rating makes for a combination that wants to do everything it can to keep the ball in play. Heel-side, toe-side, high, low, in all situations the gear effect of the head seemed pretty mitigated overall. The big thing here is me coming off of an injury let me really see just how forgiving this one could be. Honestly, I couldn’t think of a better setup to work with coming out of that situation.

tour edge exs 220 driver review

The rest of the picture sits with the spin numbers, and when you consider the changes in head style/shape from the EXS, it’s not much of a surprise that I did see a little more spin (2,907 and 2,765 RPM averages in the sessions here) given the weight placement in the head. Beyond that though, I have to say there was the rust factor as well as the Smoke Yellow 6.0 not being the best fit for me could have played a role there. Given the spin averages, the total distances given the ball speeds I was seeing were about what I expected. I do think there is some intrigue as to what the EXS 220 can do when fit to the user, and I definitely don’t want the data to automatically lead people to just fall on the belief that it’s a mid-spin head.

tour edge exs 220 driver review

Last year was a huge year for Tour Edge, the EXS lineup and in particular the driver put them right back into the thick of people’s minds. With their 48-Hour turnaround program for fitting now extending into the EXS 220 clubs and based on the extreme playability here, 2020 could be even bigger. The key as always is going to be getting them into people’s hands, but with fitting carts expanding throughout the country they are on the right path.

GolfWRX Spotlight: Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 driver

tour edge exs 220 driver review

Product : Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 driver

Pitch from Tour Edge:  “The Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 driver is a substantial leap forward in design and innovation. This driver is packed with the latest technology that Tour Edge has to offer like Diamond Face Technology where behind the face there are diamond shapes in different thicknesses to produce a massive sweet spot. This Diamond Face Technology produces a hotter face, faster ball speeds, better performance on off-center hits, as well as spin reduction.”

“The Ultra-Premium 8-1-1 titanium and Triple Carbon tech allow for more weight repositioning to the back of the head. This weight repositioning, along with the elongated shape help create an extremely high MOI, one of the highest in a driver. Finally, the EXS 220 features an adjustable hosel that gives +/- 2 degrees of loft adjustment, combined with the three offered loft heads, to fit any golfer.”

tour edge exs 220 driver review

Our take on the Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 driver

The Tour Edge Exotics line tends to only get a lot of focus on the fairway woods, but those aren’t the only ones that deserve some attention. Last year’s Exotics EXS driver was a lower-launching driver that really performed great and not enough people noticed or gave it a try. So this year, Tour Edge decided to pull out all the stops and really load up the Exotics EXS 220 with all the technology that they currently have!

tour edge exs 220 driver review

Open the box, and the Exotics EXS 220 greets you with a white-and-black headcover with a nice leather feel to it. Take that off, and underneath is a driver head with a whole lot of carbon fiber staring back at you. The top of the head is a nice gloss black that fades into the carbon fiber and the sole features a section of the toe and heel with a blue-tinted version of the same carbon. The fit and finish are really high-quality, and you can tell that the folks at Tour Edge took the time to make sure everything went together seamlessly. Fit and finish are what you would expect from a $500-plus driver, and the Exotics EXS 220 costs only $350!

tour edge exotics exs 220 driver crown

Out on the course, the Exotics EXS 220’s elongated shape will turn some of you away, but those of you who stay will be impressed. Setting the driver down gives you a square, if not slightly open, face angle in the neutral setting. Adding loft will close the face, so if face angle is important to you, buy the next loft up.

The first ball impression was really good, the ball jumps off the face and goes straight! That shape and deep weighting really do make the Exotics EXS 220 a straight driving machine. The stability of the head is easily shown off: balls hit off the toe and heel still go left and right, but the amount of movement is greatly reduced. My (main) miss is low heel and those shots still got higher up in the air and held off from going farther right than I usually expect. Same experience on toe contact as well: the ball just didn’t have the same drastic movement and direction as you would expect. Shots hit in the center of the face are going to give you a nice high, low-spinning, shot that bores you the entire time.

Launch is effortless and definitely higher than the previous EXS driver. The Exotics EXS 220 has an internal Sound Diffusion Bar to engineer the sound profile, and the noise it makes is actually pretty good. A nice solid crack is created at impact, but if I allow myself to nitpick, I would prefer the sound to be a few decibels lower.

tour edge exotics exs 220 driver face

Overall, the Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 driver is a real contender with the more expensive offerings this year. If you are looking for a driver that is going to help you hit it higher and straighter, the Exotics EXS 220 has to be on your list this year.

Ben Griffin might be a little too young to remember some of the iconic Maxfli golf balls that won on tour, but that isn’t stopping him from putting the newest Tour X ball from the brand in play. Today, Maxfli and Griffin announced an exclusive partnership that will see the PGA Tour player using the company’s four-piece golf ball.

While Griffin might be the first PGA Tour player to put a new Maxfli golf ball in play, he isn’t the first profesional golfer to do so. Lexi Thompson has been playing the Maxfli Tour golf ball on the LPGA Tour since the beginning of the 2024.

tour edge exs 220 driver review

We caught up with Ben at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in Texas this week to ask him about the new ball switch.

“I was able to finally get my hands on some and try it and immediately I saw faster ball speed with the driver, which is always something every golfer wants to see. “Then I had to test a lot around the greens and test irons, test spins, test everything like that. Basically, I came to the conclusion that I thought this was probably one of the best golf balls for my game. “And so I decided to make it official and partner with them and very excited to help kind of launch this golf ball and see where it takes us.”

tour edge exs 220 driver review

Griffin’s ball of choice is the Maxfli Tour X, a four-piece golf ball that is made for highly skilled players that want consistent distance off the driver and spin around the green. An updated core design helps add the ball speed that Griffin mentioned and two ionomer mantle layers separate low spin driver shots from higher spin iron and wedge shots. Maxfli uses Center Of center-of-gravity balancing to ensure each ball has consistent flight in the air and roll on the green. Like all golf balls on tour, the Tour X features a cast urethane cover for maximum performance, and it has a tetrahedron dimple pattern to enhance aerodynamics.

It is exciting to see a golf ball at a lower price point — $39.99 at Golf Galaxy — being used by a top 100 ranked player in the world like Ben Griffin, and equipment junkies will be keenly watching his performance with the new ball.

Tour Edge EXS 220 Driver Review

Tour Edge EXS 220 Driver Review

Tour Edge likes to take risks, be bold, and stand out in the drivers market. Their Exotics line of drivers is proof of that. Coming up with a more advanced and better-looking driver each time, they have their customers always wanting and waiting for more. You can count on Tour Edge to bring in that ‘wow factor’ each time a new driver is released.

By the end of 2018, Tour Edge Exotics released the original EXS driver. The model was incredibly tempting; equally advanced like the rest of the drivers, had an outstanding performance and was at a price that was $200 less than what they were initially charging for all their drivers. Not only that, this money was nothing in comparison to what all the other big names were quoting for a driver.

Now when a company has a range of exceedingly successful products, at one point, it gets hard to offer something way more or to repeat. But was that the case for the Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 driver? Absolutely not!

In early 2020, Tour Edge Exotics updated their entire line with the latest technology while keeping the prices reasonable. And once again, they set the driver market on fire with their new and improved Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 driver. Everyone wanted to see whether Tour Edge could maintain its standard of offering the newest technology at the best value.

Minor changes are not Tour Edge’s forte, they make significant ones to help make your golfing experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible. The Tour Edge EXS 220 driver is a fine example of this. It offers more tech, noteworthy design changes, and is perhaps one of the fine-looking golf clubs the company has ever produced all at a price of just $349.99.

Let’s get right into it!

Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220

Features of Tour Edge EXS 220 Driver Review

While the price of the Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 driver is $50 more than the Tour Edge E.X.S.E.X.S.S.E.X.S., when you realize all that it offers, it automatically makes it worth it!

Let’s take a look at all the features to know the real deal:

Diamond Face Tech

The ground-breaking Diamond Face technology features 42 distinctive thick and thin diamond shapes, creating a huge sweet spot. It makes for a fierce face with faster ball speeds, reduction of spins and better performance on off-center hits.

8-1-1 Titanium Construction

The A-grade 8-1-1 Titanium face to the Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 driver is narrower and features a lower density, lighter Titanium to allow for more weight relocating.

Max M.O.I Design

The Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 driver produces intense Moment of Inertia (M.O.I) numbers with its all-new elongated face-to back shape and adjustable 9-gram back weight only to create the M.O.I ratings ever manufactured in a driver.

Additional weights are available in 3 grams, 6 grams, 11 grams and 14 grams to help dial in the chosen swing weight and curve.

Triple Carbon Tech

Another contributor to the high numbers is the employment of Triple Carbon Fiber technology featured on the crown and hell/toe of the sole.

The exceptional and awfully lightweight carbon fiber provides extreme weight savings which can then be shifted to the back of the clubhead.

Adjustable Hosel

This feature brings great ease to golfers. Thanks to the adjustable hosel, golfers can now adjust the loft Plus/Minus 2 degrees up and down.

So with three lofts being offered in 9.5, 10.5 and 12 degrees, the Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 driver offers an unparalleled range of lofts from 7.5 degrees to 14 degrees between the three options.

The good news for all the left-handed golfers is that a version will be made available in the 10.5 loft option.

Sound Diffusion

A Sound Diffusion Bar (S.D. Bar) has been placed inside the clubhead by the Tour Edge engineers which will help improve the acoustic engineering of the EXS metal wood line up.

The S.DS.D. Bar is a similar idea that is used in music studios and concert halls with diffusion panels used to improve the richness of the sound.

A noteworthy change was made in Tour Edge’s stock shaft offerings. Rather than offering golfers the same shaft in every flex, they tested each head and shaft combination at different swing speeds to find the optimal pairings.

Their speed test data led them to offer three different stock shafts:

  • Project X HZRDUS Smoke Yellow in stiff and X for 95 M.P.H. and above,
  • Fujikura Ventus 4T Core in regular and stiff for 85 – 95 MPH,
  • Fujikura Air Speeder in Ladies, A flex, and regular M.P.H and below.

The Remarkable Appearance of Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 Driver

Our Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 driver review is incomplete without its new look. The Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 driver is a stunner! It has a sleek black carbon fiber crown with red, white, and blue branding on the sole. The blue tint used in the sole of the club makes it look sharp and attractive. They have successfully stretched the EXS 220 from the face to the back of the head which has helped a great deal to raise the M.O.I.

The wider head looks better behind the wall along with placing the Center of Gravity (GC) deeper and lower. This helps achieve increased forgiveness and a much easier launch. It has a broader footprint, and the face is more medium depth for an overall shallower profile.

The Pure Sound & Solid Feel of Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 Driver

Through the new Sound Diffusion Bar, Tour Edge has significantly improved the driver’s tone. The placement of the Sound Diffusion Bar is in the head, giving Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 the ability to tune the sound.

With every swing, you can hear a deep yet powerful sound that is far from being loud. It is almost pure. The new acoustics are so ear-pleasing. It is purer on the ears—S.D. Bar does improve the richness of the sound upon impact.

As for the feel, it is pretty solid. But much smoother. Thanks to its diamond face technology, which places 42 distinct diamond shapes behind the face, it creates a much larger spot and more ball speed. The look is very responsive and gives a higher jump than the original E.X.S.

The M.O.I and longer head make the Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 driver feel smoother throughout the swing.

Impressive Performance of Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 Driver

Adjustability.

Thanks to the adjustable hosel, the loft can be adjusted to both two-degree stronger or weaker. It also gives the option to change the lie angle via this adapter. The Tour Edge EXS 220 driver comes with a 9-gram sole weight at the club’s rear.

Additional weights will be available for extra benefit in 3 gram, 6 gram, 11 gram, and 14 gram. And it is effortless to swap weights if you wish to adjust your launch or swing weight further.

The Right Shaft Setup

Similar to any club, it is equally crucial that you get the correct shaft setup. Tour Edge has used the T.E.D. swing robot to determine the best shaft option in their diverse lineup for every swing flex and speed – once it is set up, you can expect an elite-level performance.

Optimized M.O.I

The Tour Edge EXS 220 driver is designed so that it is based around optimizing the M.O.I, which makes the driver easy to launch and control. The EXS 220 has excellent power, forgiveness, and control.

Final Thoughts

Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 driver is the best bang for your buck in drivers! Even at this price, it is much lower than the other drivers in the market. The latest technology, sleek look, and even better performance are a dream for any golfer out there.

REVIEW: Tour Edge Exotics 220 EXS Driver

tour edge exs 220 driver review

Everyone is chasing extra yards off the tee.  It doesn’t matter if you are a pro or a 25 handicap golfer, we all want a little extra boost with the driver.  There is a reason that there are new drivers every season.  That new driver might be longer, but often only by a few yards.  Does the $500 price tag justify those yardage gains?  What if you can pick up those yards by only spending $350?  The yard for yard price is kind of a “no brainer” when it comes to the Tour Edge Exotics 220 EXS Driver.  They created a new driver that can compete with anything on the market at a much lower price point, making it yard for yard the best deal in golf.

  • Total Distance:  296.2 yds
  • Carry Distance:  271.9 yds

As I’ve said many times before in review, I’m not going to tell you how to spend your money.  I’ll let you know what I found on-course about how a golf club performs.  The  Tour Edge Exotics 220 EXS driver  performs as good as any driver on the market.  The $350 price point is just a bonus for your green fee budget or additional new clubs in your bag.  The improvements are nice touches to make the club more forgiving, better sounding and even better to look at.  If you are looking for a couple extra yards with a new driver, you will probably pick up a few on average but at less expense.  Yard for yard, this is the best deal in golf.

“First Impressions” Review – Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 (Driver)

tour edge exs 220 driver review

Sequels. So often they can be very disappointing. For example, Caddyshack vs Caddyshack 2 is an example of a sequel that didn’t quite live up to the original.

The biggest sequel that I was curious to see at the 2020 PGA Show Demo Day was that of Tour Edge Golf. What would the Batavia, Illinois based company do for an encore? 2019 proved to be Tour Edge Golf’s most successful year ever. A development that didn’t surprise me at all. The EXS range of products was fantastic, the CBX 119 metalwoods were played by several Champions Tour players, and these were products that offered plenty of “bang for the golfer buck”. I made the prediction here November 2018 that the Tour Edge Exotics EXS range was going to be a serious “sleeper” among golf consumers. When you have a highly successful range of products, sometimes it’s hard to repeat. Would that be the case in 2020?

When pictures and information emerged about the Tour Edge Golf Exotics EXS 220 metalwoods, I had a couple of initial thoughts.

  • They looked fantastic.
  • The EXS 220 metalwoods looked like a “love child” of the CBX 119 and the EXS.

So let’s have a look to see if the EXS 220 driver would live up to the pressure of being the heir to the Teezy Award Finalist EXS driver (Finished in 3rd).

exsdr1

When it came to the design of the EXS 220 driver the R&D team at Tour Edge Golf did their homework. The EXS of 2019 was packed full of technology for the price point and this year, the EXS 220 features even more technology. The technology incorporated into the EXS 220 driver includes.

  • A slightly larger footprint to facilitate the use of an adjustable 9-gram back weight. This results in an extremely high MOI.
  • Triple Carbon Fiber is featured on the crown, heel, and sole. The use of this extremely lightweight carbon allowed Tour Edge engineers to utilize extreme weight savings from these locations, and place the weight further back into the clubhead.
  • “Diamond Face” technology features 42 different thick and thin diamond shapes which produce a generous sweet spot. The Diamond Face produces a hotter face with faster ball speeds, reduction of spin and better performance on off-center hits.
  • Engineers added a “Sound Diffusion Bar”. The bar was developed to enhance the acoustics of the EXS 220 driver.

The EXS 220 driver is available in three lofts. The EXS 220 driver comes in lofts of 9.5*, 10.5*, and 12*. An adjustable hosel allows for changes in lofts +/- 2*. Last but not least is that the EXS 220 driver comes with “SpeedTested” shafts. Tour Edge conducted comprehensive robotic testing to see which shaft paired best for each swing speed.

exsdr2

The Transition

With all of the technical jargon taken care of, the time has come to get down to business. How did the EXS 220 perform and did it live up to my expectations? The conditions were tough on Demo Day, and I was happy about it. The wind was cold and blew left to right. Perfect for knocking the ball out of the air.

First of all, from an aesthetic point of view, the Exotics EXS 220 is a great-looking driver. The carbon fiber crown really stands out (refer to the above pic) and it’s clean (other than the “E” alignment aid). Flipping the club over, the sole features the “SlipStream Sole” which helps with aerodynamics and potential increases in clubhead speed. But, I really like the combination of the blue and red accenting with the silver of the adjustable weight and the carbon fiber weave. Lastly, I like the simple branding out towards the mid-section placed between the toe and the trailing edge.

I put the SpeedTested shaft to work. In my case, I opted for the stiff flex Project X HZRDUS Smoke Yellow in 60-grams. I swing above 95 mph so that was the obvious choice. To that end, in my case, the shaft worked out really well. The shaft was able to keep up with me and there was zero evidence of a ballooning ballflight. So it was a good choice. However, I learned something about myself later during Demo Day. For some reason, heavier more stout shafts were working better for me. I didn’t think I was an X-flex any longer. Maybe, I should have tried an X-flex? Either way, my dispersion was great with EXS 220 paired with the stiff PX HZRDUS Smoke Yellow.

The ball jumps off of the face and there was one thing that I noticed in particular. The improved acoustics. If 2019s EXS had an issue it might have been the sound at impact. Tour Edge Golf engineers did great in placing the Sound Diffusion Bar in the head. The placement is set in the head, not quite halfway back. The acoustics are ear-pleasing and are what I would describe as “authoritative”. When you put a good swing on with the EXS 220 driver… You know it. You hear it, see it and feel it.

The launch with the EXS 220 was perfect in the stock 9.5* set-up. The ballflight penetrated in those conditions and the ball just seemed to carry. Remember that this was a cold, knock-down wind. Perhaps, there is stock in the “Diamond Face” technology.

The EXS 220 driver is plenty forgiving too. As it should be with the MOI numbers that are associated with it. Toe and heel strikes did not result in horrible misses or spinny, ballooning shots.

exsdr3

The EXS 220 driver is a definite upgrade and improvement over 2019s EXS. It’s a bonafide finalist and contender for the “Top Driver” Teezy Award. Long, straight, low-spinning and forgiving. I’d recommend any golfer looking for a driver in 2020 to have a look at and make swings with the EXS 220. There is a ton of technology packed into this driver and the SpeedTested shaft pairing worked for me. Everyone is different though. What works for me or your playing partner, may not work for you. But, what a great baseline to start with.

The retail of the EXS 220 is $349.99. That’s $50 more than last year’s EXS and it’s worth it. Even at this price, it’s much lower than several competitors in the industry. You will never see me refer to EXS or EXS 220 as a “value” driver. It’s premium… Period! Tour Edge Golf is right. “Pound for pound, Nothing else comes close”.

Until The Next Tee!!

Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 Hybrid Review

Tour edge exotics exs 220 hybrid.

David Glod, President, Founder, and Master Club Designer at Tour Edge , says he “designed this club to do it all.”  This club being the new Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 hybrid.  Forgiveness, distance, and versatility are hallmarks of the EXS 220 hybrid as a result of the maximum M.O.I. (moment of inertia) and Diamond Face technology.  Falling right in line with the EXS 200 driver and fairway wood , this hybrid is quite impressive.

Looks 2

The overall footprint of the Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 hybrid is on the larger side.  This club definitely leans more toward the “mini fairway wood” end of the spectrum.  That said, this is intentional based on the design.  Tour Edge made the 220 hybrid longer from front to back in order to help raise the MOI of the club.  The deeper head paired with the 4-gram sole weight is supposed to make the head more stable and forgiving.

Even with its larger size, the EXS 220 hybrid has a nice pair shape and a medium face depth.  The unassuming blank black metal flake crown looks clean behind the ball.  Remember, black is a slimming color! The minimal black crown helps slim the club a bit to your eye.  Flip the head over and you’ll find the EXS 220 red, white, and blue color scheme and the signature Slipstream sole (more on that later).

tour edge exs 220 driver review

How Does it Feel?

Like the woods of the EXS 220 family, the Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 hybrid utilizes the same Diamond Face tech.  There are 44 diamond shapes of varying thicknesses behind the face to provide a larger sweet spot.  The end result is a super hot face that feels like the ball is really jumping at impact .  As mentioned before, the higher MOI design makes the EXS 220 hybrid a little larger, but the club feels extremely well balanced and smooth during the swing.  More importantly, it feels incredibly forgiving and reassuring .

Tour Edge EXS 220 Hybrid SD Bar

How Does it Sound?

Though the club is more versatile, the Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 hybrid is reminiscent of a small fairway wood.  This might be the most apparent in the sound department.  This is just what’s going to happen with a larger head size.  Don’t get me wrong, the sound at impact is still tight and satisfying.  Like the driver and the fairway wood, Tour Edge implemented the Sound Diffusion (SD) bar to manage the hybrid’s tone .  Most shots come off the face with a nice “ping” with a muted pop to it.  Given the forgiving face, it takes quite a bit to not get this sound.  Big mishits sound similar, just a little firmer and less lively.

EXS 220 Hybrid 7

On-Course Performance

Tour Edge’s claim of versatility in the EXS 220 hybrid really rings true.  As usual with a hybrid, it’s up to the player to figure out what role it needs to fit in the bag and what you’re looking for out of those shots.  The great news is that the EXS 220 can probably do it.  First, the forgiveness is impressive.  The sweet spot is large and the higher MOI make the club easy to launch.   Additionally raising the center of gravity, reduced the spin rates, but there’s still enough spin to keep the ball in the air and come down relatively soft.

The ball speeds from the Diamond Face, mixed with the forgiveness and easy launch, result in big distance.  Again, this may be a situation where the EXS 220 can play the role of a smaller fairway wood.  When you need to pound one off the tee or on a long par 5, this club does that well.  I mean, seriously…man, this thing can BOMB it.   Additionally, if you need to launch one a little higher for a softer landing, that shot is easy to play as well.

Lastly, the signature Slipstream sole does its job to make the EXS 220 hybrid playable from a range of lies.  The purpose of the Slipstream sole is to make the turf interaction “smoother” so the club tracks better through the ball.  I noticed the club rip crisply through shorter grass and track straighter through lighter rough.  Heavy rough…hit it better off the tee, ok?

Tour Edge EXS 220 Hybrid 15

Final Thoughts – Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 Hybrid

Short and simple, the Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 hybrid is a monster of a club.  It’s super easy to hit with a soaring flight and a ton of distance .  That’s a technical imperial unit of measurement.  I genuinely felt like I could hit every shot very easily with this club.  I do think big shot shapers may still opt for something like the Tour Edge CBX 119 for its smaller profile, but players mainly looking for longer distances and forgiveness in this area of the bag can’t go wrong with the EXS 220 hybrid.

After the Review…

Just a few quick additional notes that are pretty neat.  First, Tour Edge provides a lifetime warranty on all of their clubs.  If that doesn’t add to the value of the EXS 220, I’m not sure what does.  Additionally, the EXS 220 family is now part of Tour Edge’s 48-Hour Custom Fit Delivery Program.  This means that any custom order placed through an authorized Tour Edge dealer by 2:30pm Central will be delivered within two business days anywhere in the Continental US.  That’s a pretty quick turnaround on a custom build…

Note: for swing weight and launch adjustments, Tour Edge will also make 7 and 10 gram weights available. Which weight is best for you will heavily depend on your swing and the shot you’re looking for out of your hybrid.

Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 Fairway Wood Review

More in reviews:.

TecTecTec KLYR Laser Rangefinder

50 Words or Less

The Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 fairway wood is exceptionally easy to hit.  Very high ball speeds.  Not high launching, but very consistent with launch angle.

tour edge exs 220 driver review

Introduction

While Tour Edge Exotics has put out great clubs in every category, the area where they’ve truly made their mark is in fairway woods.  So, when they said that the EXS 220 is the best fairway wood they’ve ever made, it immediately went to the top of my “Must Test” list.  I got my hands on one to see if it can walk in the massive footsteps of the CB2 and TEE’s other legendary fairway woods.

tour edge exs 220 driver review

Much like the original EXS fairway wood (review HERE ), the EXS 220 fairway wood has an address look that will appeal to a broad range of players.  Its size is slightly above average, but it’s extremely well proportioned.  It’s symmetrical and round with an average face height – all traits that make it very attractive to me.  What fails to come through in the photo above is the amount of sparkle in the crown.  It’s not distracting, but there’s enough to make it stand out from the crowd.

tour edge exs 220 driver review

As with the EXS 220 driver, I think Tour Edge Exotics did a great job creating a complete aesthetic package .  For pure visual appeal, there’s no separating the EXS 220 from fairway woods that cost significantly more.  The navy blue carbon fiber in the sole makes it subtly different from other FWs, and the SlipStream Sole is a beautiful, functional centerpiece.

tour edge exs 220 driver review

Sound & Feel

Given how impressed I was with the sound and feel of the EXS 220 driver, I had very high expectations for the little brother.  The EXS 220 fairway wood did not let me down.

Impact created a sound that was mid-volume and crisp without being metallic .  There’s no “tink” here, more of a solid, tenor “thwack.”

When it comes to feedback, I’ll share exactly what I wrote in my notes.  “Feedback is a bit limited, but who cares when the smash is always 1.45+”.  I was able to locate my bigger misses, but  shots near the center of the face sounded and felt excellent .

Performance

When a company says, “this is our best fairway wood ever,” that can mean a lot of different things.  It could relate to ball speed, distance, ease of use, or consistency with launch and spin.  In the case of the Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 fairway wood, it actually means all of those things.

Since distance and ball speed are the sexiest things about any club, we’ll start there.  The EXS 220 has both in spades.  As I mentioned earlier, the smash factor was maxed out on good swings and shockingly high on bad ones .

The other pieces of the distance equation are launch and spin, and the EXS 220 fairway wood is very consistent with those as well.  With the Project X HZRDUS Smoke Yellow shaft, this is not a very high launching club, but virtually every shot launched between 8 and 10 degrees (those numbers will almost certainly be higher for players who aren’t as low launching as I am).  That predictability is invaluable on the course .  The spin numbers were equally robust.

tour edge exs 220 driver review

Regular readers know that I don’t carry a fairway wood in my bag because I struggle to hit them as consistently as hybrids.  The EXS 220 FW, however, was so dependable that I was actually having fun testing it.  Rather than grabbing the numbers I needed and moving on, I kept hitting the EXS 220 trying to shape shots and hit specific distances.

One important thing to note is that the EXS 220 FW is not adjustable for loft.   That means it’s even more critical to be fit for the right head.  Don’t assume that the standard 3W will be the longest for you.  Like me, you may get much more carry distance from the 16.5 or 18 degree version of this club.

Finally, Tour Edge has done something noteworthy with their stock shaft offerings.  Rather than offering the same shaft in every flex, they tested each head and shaft combination at different swing speeds to find the optimal pairings.  Their SpeedTested data led them to offer three different stock shafts : Project X HZRDUS Smoke Yellow in Stiff and X for 95 MPH and above, Fujikura Ventus 4T Core in Regular and Stiff for 85-95MPH, and Fujikura Air Speeder in Ladies, A-Flex, and Regular for 85 MPH and below.

tour edge exs 220 driver review

Whether you wear our your fairway woods or leave yours permanently under their covers, the new Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 FW deserves a serious look.  Few fairway woods combine ease of use with high end performance like this one does.  And like its big brother, it delivers on performance without breaking the bank.

I have been a big fan of tour edge. I have a xj1 4 wood it has to be the easiest fairway wood to hit. Now after reading your review, I’m thinking I would like to try out another tour edge offering. Great review Matt

' src=

Hi Robin, Glad you posted this comment. I, as well, have the XJ1 4 wood and use it as my “go long” fairway wood of the turf. I usually hit it very well (nice and easy/forgiving). I just ordered the EXS 220 3 wood (13+*). I plan on using this in place of my current Cobra driver. Like most, my driver is very inconsistent. My last round i hit it well, the round before not so “well”. I will post an update on how the 3 wood performs as my driver replacement.

' src=

Would you recommend the EXS 220 for slower swing speed players? I struggle hitting fairway woods so I generally don’t carry one. But I need something that will fill that distance gap between my irons and driver.

' src=

As long as the shaft fits and you play the right loft, there’s no reason this wouldn’t work well.

' src=

I really wish they’d make these for us leftys

' src=

Kyle, I have a left handed 3 and 5 wood. Had to order took about 7-9 days . Excellent !

' src=

I have a slower swing due to age I need a senior shaft , I like the low profile of the head. Would you recommend this 3 wood for me.

If you get the right shaft and loft (don’t be wedded to the idea of a 15* 3W), this should work well for anyone.

' src=

I hit the EXS 220 fairways at the sim in the store and I believe the Fuji Ventus or Fujii AirSpeeder 40g will fit a senior well (or anyone with an R flex – Try both and see what works for you. I loved the feel, forgiveness and consistency – and distance. It was as long as Mavrik in my sim experience. I had a lot of confidence swinging it. If you are a senior, if not the 3 wd, try the 4wood – a little more air time if you need it.

My speed is 92-96, so I am on the cusp of stiff in a Ventus. Need more sim time to know.

' src=

I have built many fairway woods and tried many OEM, the exotics 3 wood is as good as any I have tried! Great looking, very square in setup position and love the sound.

I am a low spin player and need a club that offers spin. Ordered the 16.5 in the Ventus and struggled with the shaft. It is mid-kick. With a fairway wood, I prefer a 55-65g low kick shaft. I installed a Graphite Design AD F low kick, mid-spin fairway shaft, and the EXS 220 came to life for me. It is easier off the turf than the previous EX10 Beta that I played for 3 yrs. The shallower face helps. The EXS 220 face is also very forgiving and speedy. You can make contact a bit off and get excellent results. Hit it thin, and it still speeds down the fairway with good results and over a very tall boulder. It happens. The EXS 220 is a very friendly club, which is what I want from a 15-16. Good luck.

I was influenced by Matt’s and other reviews (THP) and bought this lineup – the 16.5 fairway and 19 hybrid several months ago. I went on Trackman last week during a lesson, and after an hour, my instructor asked me get out the top end of my bag and to start with the EXS 220 16.5 at 43 inches. I was not having a great speed day but I was getting 129 ball speed from a 87-88 mph swing. He had me hit his M5 with a TPT Red Proto Fwy Shaft and he said the EXS 220 was the winner. He was surprised.

I am continually impressed by this fairway wood and picked up the 5 wd – 18 deg at 42 inches., this week. This EXS 220 lineup is the best value in golf if the shaft fits you, and if it doesn’t, like me. I had fairway shafts in my old clubs and reshafted.

Shallow face, well designed face to keep ball speed, forgiving, high MOI – you can replace/adjust the back weight for your swing.

' src=

I have purchased the exs 220 3 and 5 wood love them. Iam 68 years old with 5 handicap they are easy to hit and our long. Purchased 3 wood first in Ventus shaft and just purchased 5 wood in the speeder shaft for me speeder works a little better but happy with both. I think tour edge makes a great product at a good price.

' src=

Just bought 3, 4, 5 HL4 hybrids. First hit on the range convinced me I could play them in our group match that morning. Had my old ones in case I needed more time with the HL4’s. They are solid, consistent and confidence giving. My 1st Tour Edge clubs, will be a fan for years to come.

' src=

What the difference in the ex220 and the e722 5wood.

We’re going to have a full review of the E722 FW coming in the next few weeks.

' src=

My son plays the tour edge ex10 fairway 4 wood with Ad tour made for shaft in regular flex, he is ready to upgrade to stiff since launch monitor shows it will bring spin down and control better, he loves tour edge and wants another 4 wood and likes this model even though a few years old, he would either be ventus stiff or hazdrous yellow, he swings driver 95 currently and he will only get faster. He is senior in high school and I know get fit but for this old model he really only has 2 options any advice on shafts, he is not an overly spinning player and has traditional launch angles for most part
