Taylor Swift namedrops this Florida city on “The Tortured Poets Department.’ Where is Destin?

tour is meaning

Destin's tourism department just hit a huge jackpot.

While Florida got a huge shoutout on Taylor Swift " The Tortured Poet's Department " album, the Northwest Florida city got an extra special nod in the song.

In her 11th studio album , Swift sings about escaping to the Sunshine State, with Florence + The Machine  by her side. Together, they both detail the sunny paradise in a haunting, brutal way that only Floridians know.

What were Taylor Swift's lyrics about Destin?

In the song " Florida !!!" with Florence + the Machine, Swift sings the lyrics:

"Little did you know your home's really only; A town you're just a guest in; So you work your life away just to pay; For a time-share down in Destin."

Where is Destin?

Destin is a city located along the Gulf of Mexico in Okaloosa County, right in the state's panhandle region. According to USA Today, the area is known as a tourist destination because of the gulf beaches, fishing and resorts.

What is Swift's connection to Destin, Florida?

There is no direct connection to Destin for the popstar but Swift does have some ties to the state as a whole.

For starters, her father Scott Swift lives in a $4 million home in Pinellas County. Back in 2020, it was reported he fought a burglar who broke into the St. Pete penthouse.

Swift has also toured in Florida throughout her career, ever since her Fearless World Tour. That's not even counting the festivals she's played at early in her career, such as the Florida Strawberry Festival and Lehigh Spring Fest.

Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce? Nah. Florida, Eras Tour singer make one enchanted love story

So it's clear Swift loves Florida but do we love her? A report from sports betting website  Betway  last year revealed that Florida houses the most Swifties. According to Betway, Florida makes 5.5 million yearly searches about Taylor Swift, making it the No. 1 state in the U.S. That's roughly 81,910 searches per 10,000 residents.

What is Taylor Swift's song 'Florida!!!' about?

In “Florida!!!”, Swift and Florence offer up a suspense-filled track that highlights the beauty and brutality of the state, with lyrics aimed at escaping, washing away with hurricanes and bodies (metaphorically) sinking away in the swamp.

But what is the song actually about? Well, no one but Swift, her collaborators and closest confidants will know the answer but that doesn't stop Swifties from sleuthing. However, Swift did tell iHeart Radio that after getting inspiration from crime shows, she thought of where she'd go if she needed to reinvent herself.

"I think I was coming up with this idea of 'what happens when your life doesn't fit' or 'the choices you've made catch up with you' and you're surrounded by these harsh consequences and judgement," Swift said. "And circumstances did not lead you to where you thought you'd be."

Fans previously speculated the album was about Swift’s six-year relationship with English actor Joe Alwyn and their breakup. Many theorize that "Florida!!!" is about her Eras Tour shows at Tampa's Raymond James Stadium from April 13-15, 2023 — which would have been when details of Swift's and Alwyn's breakup were made public.

The theory seems to be confirmed when Florence sings, "So you pack your life away just to wait out/The sh—storm back in Texas." According to Elle , Houston was the next tour stop after Tampa.

Ever since the track list was revealed, fans looked back at moments from the Tampa shows and noticed the popstar seemed upset when performing songs about her past relationship.

Does Florida get any other Tayor Swift nods in 'The Tortured Poets Department'?

Yes! In "Fortnight," a collaboration with Post Malone and the lead single on the album about a suburban housewife's fling with a married man, she sings at the end:

"'Nother fortnight lost in America; Move to Florida, buy the car you want; But it won't start up 'til you touch, touch, touch me"

Where can I buy 'The Tortured Poets Department'?

You can purchase it  on her website . There are several versions of the album available, including a CD, cassette, vinyl and digital album.

These retailers are selling the album starting Friday, April 19:

  • Barnes and Noble
  •   Local record stores

Taylor Swift’s Track ‘Florida!!!’ Seems to Have a Joe Alwyn Breakup Reference

Huge news for Florida: Taylor Swift just released a new song dedicated to the state. While the tribute might come as a surprise for the singer, who was raised in Pennsylvania then moved to Tennessee to kick-start her music career in Nashville, fans have theories about the track’s backstory.

On “Florida!!!”, which appears on her new album The Tortured Poets Department , Swift and Florence Welch (of Florence + The Machine) trade verses about finding solace and an escape in the Sunshine State. There are lines like: “I need to forget, so take me to Florida” and “Florida, can I use you up? ” (Florida’s tourism board could not have hit a bigger jackpot.)

The song “Florida!!!” has a similar kind of infectious energy to it. It carries an anthemic and at times euphoric feel, especially with pounding drums in the chorus. It sounds heavily inspired by Welch’s own music and seems like it would kill in a stadium setting.

Swift played three nights in Tampa before moving on to her next tour stop in Houston from April 21 to 23, 2023. (Her lyric, “So you pack your life away just to wait out the shit storm back in Texas,” might be a reference to her tour schedule.) She gave a thumbs up to fans asking if she was okay post-breakup, but in reality, she was suffering, which she details in the TPD track “ I Can Do It With a Broken Heart .” She sings at the end of that song, “’Cause I’m miserable / And no one even knows!”

Swift touched on how her interest in true crime inspired the track in commentary she gave to Amazon Music . “I’m always watching Dateline ,” she began. “People have these crimes that they commit; where do they immediately skip town and go to? They go to Florida. They try to reinvent themselves, have a new identity, blend in. I think when you go through a heartbreak, there’s a part of you that thinks, ‘I want a new name. I want a new life. I don’t want anyone to know where I’ve been or know me at all.’ And so that was the jumping off point. Where would you go to reinvent yourself and blend in? Florida!”

In a foreword she shared as the album dropped, Swift wrote that TPD is “an anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time—one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure. This period of the author’s life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted. This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it. And then all that’s left behind is the tortured poetry.”

Listen to a piece of that poetry, “Florida!!!”, below and read the full lyrics here.

You can beat the heat if you beat the charges too They said I was a cheat, I guess it must be true. And my friends all smell like weed or little babies. And this city reeks of driving myself crazy. Little did you know your home’s really only A town you're just a guest in So you work your life away just to pay For a time share down in Destin. Florida Is one hell of a drug Florida Can I use you up? The hurricane was my name when it came I got drunk and I dared it to wash me away Barricaded in the bathroom with a bottle of wine Well, me and my ghost, we had a hell of a time Yes, I'm haunted but I'm feeling just fine All my girls got their lace and their crimes and your cheating husband disappeared Well, no one asks any questions here So I did my best, too lay to rest All of the bodies that have ever been on my body And in my mind, they sink into the swamp Is that a bad thing to say in a song? Little did you know your home's really only The town you’ll get arrested So you pack your life away just to wait out The shit storm back in Texas Florida Is one hell of a drug Florida Can I use you? I need to forget, so take me to Florida I’ve got some regrets, I’ll bury them in Florida Tell me I’m despicable, say it’s unforgivable These dolls are beautiful, fuck me up, Florida I need to forget, so take me to Florida I’ve got some regrets, I’ll bury them in Florida Tell me I’m despicable, say it’s unforgivable What a crash, what a rush, fuck me up, Florida It’s one hell of a drug It’s one hell of a drug Love loves me like this, I don’t want to resist So take me to Florida Little did you know your home’s really only A town you’re just a guest in So you work your life away just to pay For a time share down in Destin Little did you know your home’s really only The town you’ll get arrested So you pack your life away just to wait out The shit storm back in Texas Florida Is one hell of a drug Florida, can I use you up? Taylor Swift shocker: New album, "The Tortured Poets Department," is actually a double album

By Alex Sundby , Brian Dakss

Updated on: April 19, 2024 / 10:28 PM EDT / CBS News

Anticipation was growing at a fever pitch before Taylor Swift's latest album, " The Tortured Poets Department ," dropped at midnight EDT. But the pop superstar had a huge surprise on tap: It's actually a double album.

When Part One dropped, Swift wrote on Instagram , "All's fair in love and poetry... New album THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. Out now 🤍"

Then came the shocker, revealed in an Instagram post saying , "It's a 2am surprise: The Tortured Poets Department is a secret DOUBLE album. ✌️ I'd written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you, so here's the second installment of TTPD: The Anthology. 15 extra songs. And now the story isn't mine anymore… it's all yours. 🤍."

What's Taylor Swift's new album about?

Swift described the album as "new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time — one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure."

She also said that time has been "closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted."

"Entertainment Tonight" correspondent Denny Directo called the record some of her most vulnerable work.

"Fans were left with more questions than there were answers, so good luck trying to decipher who these songs are about, what they mean," Directo told CBS News. "… I feel like there's more heartbreak songs on this than there are love songs."

Hours ahead of the record's release, Swift said on social media that its first single was "Fortnight," featuring Post Malone, and its music video was released Friday night .

Swift praised the Grammy-nominated artist's musical experimentation and melodies "that just stick in your head forever."

"I got to witness that magic come to life firsthand when we worked together on Fortnight," Swift said in her post .

"Fortnight" isn't the only track on the album on which Swift worked with another artist. Florence and The Machine is also featured.

What's on "The Tortured Poets Department" tracklist?

Swift posted an initial tracklist to social media in February one day after she announced the album at  the Grammys , where she won for best pop vocal album. Here's the list of all 31 songs:

  • "Fortnight"
  • "The Tortured Poets Department"
  • "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys"
  • "So Long, London"
  • "But Daddy I Love Him"

  • "Florida!!!"
  • "Guilty as Sin?"
  • "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?"
  • "I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)"

2024 RBC Heritage live stream, TV schedule, how to watch online, channel, tee times, radio, golf coverage

There was no rest for the weary with a signature event on tap one week after the masters.

rbc-heritage-signage-2023-g.jpg

Players have made the short trip from Augusta, Georgia, to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, for the 2024 RBC Heritage. In total, 69 golfers teed it up on Harbour Town Golf Links as yet another signature event on the PGA Tour's playing calendar rolls on.

Unlike the Genesis Invitational or Arnold Palmer Invitational, the RBC Heritage does not feature a 36-hole cut, meaning the entirety of the field will be around for the weekend. That is music to the ears to those who missed out on the weekend action at the Masters, including the likes of Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman.

Spieth, the 2022 champion, looks to kickstart his season after a disappointing showing at Augusta National. He is no stranger to bouncing back at the RBC Heritage, following a missed cut at the year's first major championship with a win a week later in Hilton Head. He's not in contention to win this tournament, but he's certainly playing better than he did last week.

This tournament, like the rest on the PGA Tour these days, goes through Scottie Scheffler. The world No. 1 aims to collect his fourth trophy in his last five tournaments, and he holds the 54-hole lead entering the final day of play. Fresh off slipping on his second green jacket, Scheffler has widened the gap between him and the rest of the world and shows no signs of slowing down. Collin Morikawa and Ludvig Åberg -- just as they did at the Masters -- are breathing down Scheffler's neck on Sunday.

Wyndham Clark cards front-nine 29 on Sunday at RBC Heritage

Change Text Size

There might be no catching Scottie Scheffler on Sunday at the RBC Heritage. But that doesn’t mean Wyndham Clark won’t try.

Clark turned in 7-under 29 in the final round at Harbour Town Golf Links, moving within two strokes of the leader Scheffler, who chipped in for eagle at the par-5 second hole to move to 18-under.

Wyndham Clark holes out for eagle on No. 2 at RBC Heritage

After beginning Sunday in 17th place at 9-under total, Clark started fast with a 13-foot birdie at the par-4 first, a chip-in eagle from 31 feet at the par-5 second and a 23-foot birdie at the par-4 third. He added a two-putt birdie from 11 feet at the par-5 fifth, a 9-foot birdie at the par-3 seventh, and he closed the nine with an up-and-down birdie from 59 feet at the short par-4 ninth, draining a 3-foot birdie to break 30 on the side.

Clark, No. 5 in the Official World Golf Ranking, has been on the short list of the world’s best players (not named Scheffler) in the past 12 months. He won last year’s Wells Fargo Championship and U.S. Open, added this year’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and narrowly fell to Scheffler at THE PLAYERS Championship last month, as a 17-foot birdie try to force a playoff at TPC Sawgrass spun out in cruel fashion.

Wyndham Clark sinks a 22-foot birdie putt at RBC Heritage

He'll likely need something silly low on the back nine at Harbour Town to chase down Scheffler at the RBC Heritage, but he’ll give it a run.

A restaurateur learned the hard way not to mess with Lauren Sánchez

  • NYC restaurateur Keith McNally insulted Lauren Sánchez in an apparently unprompted Instagram post.
  • Celebrities defended Sánchez, an Emmy-winning former news anchor and fiancée of Jeff Bezos.
  • This is not McNally's first controversy. He's also insulted James Corden and Adele on Instagram.

Insider Today

Restaurateur Keith McNally, who's no stranger to controversial Instagram posts , has made a habit out of insulting celebrities. And his latest target is Lauren Sánchez , the fiancée of one of the most powerful people in the world, Jeff Bezos.

But with some major heavyweights in her corner, Sánchez has the upper hand.

McNally, who owns more than a dozen restaurants including NYC's famed Balthazar, wrote a seemingly out-of-the-blue Instagram post attacking Sánchez and Bezos on Monday.

"Does anybody else find Jeff Bezos' New wife — Lauren Sanchez — ABSOLUTELY REVOLTING?" he wrote in the original post, accompanied by a series of pictures of the couple, according to The Cut. "What an ugly and Fucking SMUG - LOOKING couple they make. Is this what having 1000 Billion dollars does to people?"

McNally's post was later edited , though, as of Friday, it read: "What a Bizarre-looking couple. Is this what having 1000 billion dollars does to people?"

But before McNally watered down his insults, Sánchez's reputation proved she was not to be trifled with.

Scores of celebrities rushed to defend Sanchez, also an actress, pilot, philanthropist, and founder of an aerial filming company. Her relationship with Bezos became public after Bezos' divorce from MacKenzie Scott in 2019. Since then, the two have been pictured in the throes of unabashed fun, often aboard Bezos' $500-million yacht , as Sánchez's reputation as a mover-and-shaker attracts a growing rank of diehard fans .

Chrissy Teigen commented on McNally's post, writing, "She's actually incredibly dynamic, accomplished and kind, and everyone who knows her would say the same."

Jessica Seinfeld, who's married to Jerry Seinfeld, wrote in a since-deleted post, "This post is a reflection of your twisted, pitiful, and hideous mind. Lauren has twice the character you do," according to The Cut .

And MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle commented that Sánchez is "accomplished, kind, smart and loved," adding that McNally's post was "mean for no reason," The Cut reported.

Though Sánchez herself has not directly reacted to McNally's insults, she did follow them with a few Instagram Stories calling for kindness.

Related stories

In a Story posted on Tuesday, which is no longer viewable, Sánchez shared a quote that read, "People will love you. People will hate you. And none of it will have anything to do with you," according to The Independent .

Sánchez also shared a quote attributed to fashion designer Rachel Zoe. "Lead with kindness, root for other people, cheer for those you love. Just honestly wish everyone the best," it read, according to The Independent.

Representatives for McNally and Sánchez did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

If his edited-down post is any indication, McNally sure learned the hard way not to mess with Sánchez, or her famous friends.

But, this is not McNally's first rodeo — the restaurant owner has insulted other big names in recent years too, some more warranted than others.

In 2022, McNally had an infamous beef with TV personality and host of "The Late Late Show," James Corden.

McNally accused Corden of being abusive to his staff at Balthazar on two occasions, saying that during one visit to the SoHo hotspot Corden yelled "like crazy" at servers and in another visit, was "nasty" to the restaurant manager. McNally called Corden a "tiny Cretin of a man" on Instagram and said Corden was banned from the restaurant.

But, McNally said that after Corden had called and "apologized profusely," he would be allowed back.

However, the beef didn't stop there. Corden told The New York Times a few days later that he didn't do anything wrong, leading McNally to strike back. In another Instagram screed, McNally mocked Corden's acting skills, insulted his fanbase, and urged him to admit wrongdoing.

The issue appeared to die down after Corden later apologized on-air.

Megastar Adele has also been the subject of McNally's disdain, which in her case, appeared to be unprompted.

In 2023, McNally attacked the singer-songwriter on Instagram , calling her appearance on Corden's "Carpool Karaoke" segment "profoundly inauthentic," "sickening," and "HORSE SHIT."

He wrote that Adele's "make-up was so hideously overdone and fingernails so long she resembled a particularly scary Cruella de Vil."

Our advice to McNally? Maybe stay off Instagram.

Thousands of people in Canary Islands take to streets calling for limit to tourist numbers

The seven main canary islands are home to a total of 2.2 million people - yet welcomed nearly 14 million international tourists in 2023 alone..

Saturday 20 April 2024 22:41, UK

Thousands of people have taken to the streets on the Canary Islands to protest against tourism and say the region is "not for sale".

The residents are calling for the Spanish group of islands to temporarily limit tourist arrivals in a bid to stem a boom in short-term holiday rentals and hotel construction - which is driving up housing costs for locals.

Tourism accounts for 35% of the gross domestic product (GDP) in the Canary Islands , but demonstrators say changes to the industry must be made.

Groups protested in Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and La Palma on Saturday.

Signs reading "We don't want to see our island die", "Stop Hotels" and "Canaries not for sale" were seen as thousands of people took to the streets.

"It's not a message against the tourist, but against a tourism model that doesn't benefit this land and needs to be changed," said one protester in Tenerife's capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Marches were also held in cities on mainland Spain.

They were organised by two environmental organisations and timed to fall just before the peak summer holiday season.

The groups are calling for local authorities to temporarily limit visitor numbers in order to alleviate pressure on the islands' environment, infrastructure and housing situation. They also hope the proposal will curb property purchases by foreigners.

Antonio Bullon, a protester in Tenerife, said: "The authorities must immediately stop this corrupt and destructive model that depletes the resources and makes the economy more precarious.

"The Canary Islands have limits and people's patience too."

The seven main Canary Islands are home to 2.2 million people and in 2023, nearly 14 million international tourists visited them - up 13% from the previous year.

Authorities are concerned about the impact high volumes of tourists are having on the locals, and a draft law toughening up the rules on short-term lets is expected to be passed this year.

The islands' president said on Friday that he felt "proud" the region is a leading Spanish tourism spot, but acknowledged more controls are needed.

"We can't keep looking away. Otherwise, hotels will continue to open without any control," Fernando Clavijo told a news conference.
