Gov. Roy Cooper touts North Carolina 'on the global stage' with visit by Japan's Prime Minister

G ov. Roy Cooper declared Friday "North Carolina and Japan Friendship Day" as he hosted the Japanese Prime Minister on a trip to spotlight the country as the state's biggest foreign investor.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his wife, Yuko Kishida, traveled to North Carolina on Thursday night after visiting Washington D.C.

"It puts North Carolina on the global stage of economic development," Gov. Roy Cooper said Friday after touring the Honda Aircraft Co. headquarters in Greensboro with the Prime Minister. "We know that foreign direct investment is needed to put money in the pockets of North Carolina families. We've got about 30,000 people a day that go to work for a Japanese company. So more investment here means more money for North Carolina families and more contracts for small businesses."

Kishida said in a news conference before his visit that he chose to stop in North Carolina to show that the Japan-U.S. partnership extends beyond Washington, according to a provisional translation posted on the prime minister's website.

Kishida, Japan's Prime Minister since 2021, is an up-and-coming Toyota Motor Corp. electric and hybrid battery plant in Liberty and the Honda Aircraft Co. headquarters in Greensboro. He also stopped at the North Carolina Japan Center at Dix Park.

The North Carolina Japan Center was founded in 1980 under Governor Jim Hunt, with a focus on strengthening relationships and attracting economic opportunities. Today, the Prime Minister attended an award ceremony where students there were honored for their pursuit of learning Japanese.

The Prime Minister also got to tour the Nagoya University global campus located at NC State's Centennial Campus.

His visit marks the first campus visit from a foreign head of government in nearly 70 years, according to NC State. The last visit was in 1954 when Turkish President Celal Bayar visited.

Japanese students from NC State, Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill had the chance to talk to Kishida one-on-one after hearing about some of his visions for Japan's partnership with NC State, including expanding the student exchange program.

"I feel like the time has passed very fast," Kiriko Terai said. "But it was very good to directly know what the prime minister is looking for, and I'm glad that we were all able to share our great experiences here with the prime minister. I hope young students in Japan will also be encouraged by us to study abroad."

Meanwhile, Yuko Kishida spent her morning inside a Japanese language classroom at Chapel Hill High School. She then toured Duke Gardens with North Carolina first lady Kristin Cooper. The pair enjoyed a traditional Japanese tea ahead of touring the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.

At the museum, Kishida and Cooper saw a traditional Japanese Friendship Doll named Miss Kagawa. It was given to the State of North Carolina by the people of Japan as part of an exchange in the 1920s.

Unlike other similar dolls, Miss Kagawa remained on display during World War II as a symbol of peace and goodwill.

Lunch at the Executive Mansion

In the middle of the day, the entire group met at the Executive Mansion for a historic lunch, marking the first time that a foreign head of state visited the residence.

The menu for the luncheon was prepared by James Beard Award-winning chef Ashley Christensen, with food provided by Sam Jones BBQ. Unspoken Tradition, a North Carolina bluegrass band, performed for guests.

Inside, attendees included US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel, Attorney General Josh Stein, Senate Minority Leader Dan Blue, House Speaker Tim Moore, House Minority Leader Robert Reives, Consul General for Japan Mio Maeda, NC State Chancellor Randy Woodson, and Honorary Consul for Japan in North and South Carolina David Robinson.

"(The Japanese delegation is) going to go back and tell stories (that) North Carolina isn't just that place between Washington and Miami. It's a great place to do business. It's a great place to study. It's a great place to do research and development, collaboration, and we told that story really well today," said Robinson.

Also inside was Lars Petersen, the CEO and President of FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies. Thursday, Petersen spoke at an event in Raleigh, in which the company announced it was investing more than $1 billion into its Holly Springs facility, with plans to add 680 jobs by 2031.

"What we're seeing today is the fruits of investment 30 years ago. When we started an office in Tokyo, when we started The Japan Center where the Prime Minister is going right now, the investments we're making today, they'll pay off this year. They'll pay off in a decade, but they're going to pay off 30 years from now as well," said Robinson.

The luncheon lasted for about 90 minutes.

Outside the event a small group stood across the street watching the motorcade pull behind the gates.

Dean Centa was part of that group.

"I just came to visit for the weekend and I was like, 'literally the prime minister is here. We need to go see,'" said Centa, who landed at RDU this morning to visit a friend at UNC.

Centa, whose mother is Japanese, grew up in Wilmington. He studied abroad in Nagoya at Nanzan University last year and did see NC State influence there. He got to interact with students from Nagoya University, which has a campus at NC State that Kishida visited Friday afternoon.

"There's not really many Japanese people (in North Carolina). I was one of the only people in Wilmington that had any roots to Japan. Seeing the Japanese Prime Minister come to North Carolina is kind of a connection of both of my parents," explained Centa, who is studying Global Affairs and East Asian Studies at Yale.

Japan's impact in North Carolina

Japan is North Carolina's largest source of foreign direct investment, according to the governor's office. About 30,000 state residents work for Japanese companies, Cooper said.

One of those companies, Fujifilm, announced a $1.2 billion investment in its biopharmaceutical manufacturing plant in the state hours before Kishida landed.

Chiaki Takagi, a Japanese studies lecturer at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, said the prime minister's visit surprised her but it could signal a "positive future partnership" between Japan and the U.S. and more Japanese workers coming to the state.

"This whole thing will provide the area with opportunities to be engaged in very active cultural exchange between Japan and the U.S.," Takagi said. "And it's nice to know Greensboro will be the place."

Ricky Martin embraced la vida loca at Madonna 's concert this weekend -- and he seemed to be a happy camper too during one part of the show ... pitching a tent in his pants.

The singer got swept up in Madge's "Vogue" segment during her Miami "Celebration" tour stop Sunday, where Ricky was the featured celeb guest and judging the dancers next to the main talent ... and at one point during the sexy dance, Ricky appears to have gotten aroused.

The reason we believe that to be the case -- Ricky looked erect while seated, and even when he stood up ... the guy seemed to be saluting from the waist below.

Makes sense, we suppose, when you see what these dancers were doing on Ricky for a quick minute -- including rubbing up against his junk, something he appears to have relished.

In the moment, he also didn't really acknowledge the fact he was erect either -- other than continuing on with his whole performance, that is, until the routine was over and done with.

Madonna didn't seem to notice herself, and the show went on like normal. But many in the audience certainly saw it ... and they're posting about it on social media. Strangely enough, this footage of Rick with what seems like a boner comes from his own account.

So, if he was feeling good ... he definitely ain't trying to hide it.

"MJ" arrives in Denver, reviving Michael Jackson's iconic music and dance on stage

One of the most popular musicals on tour has arrived in Denver, as "MJ" the musical prepares to play the Buell Theatre through April 28. The show follows the journey of Michael Jackson's life, from childhood to his creation of The Dangerous World Tour. While the music shines throughout the two and a half hour performance, Jackson's iconic dance moves are also fully on display.

 Cast members, like Jamaal Fields Green, have the difficult task of trying to recreate Jackson's iconic dance moves on stage any given night.

"It is Michael Jackson, it is as important as it gets," Fields-Green said. "There's pressure for sure, with an icon as big as he was and still is."

Fields-Green and his peers learned how to imitate Jackson as best as possible thanks, in-part, to their opportunity to learn from Jackson's choreographers, Rich + Tone Talauega. The duo worked directly with Michael Jackson during some of his tours and were able to give their insight to those on the MJ cast to make sure audiences get a near-authentic experience to a Michael Jackson concert.

Directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, MJ brings Jackson back to life on stage.

JoJo Carmichael, swing and assistant dance captain, said she always aspired to dance with Jackson.

"I would have loved to be a tour dancer with Michael Jackson," Carmichael said.

Though Jackson died before Carmichael had the opportunity to complete her dream, she said she was thrilled to be able to share what she has learned with other younger generations.

"I think I definitely am carrying on his legacy. Teaching his moves does help carry on the legacy of Michael Jackson and MJ the musical," Carmichael said. "I don't take that lightly."

Carmichael and some of her fellow cast and crew from MJ get the opportunity to teach some of Jackson's moves to students around the country.

Ahead of the show's stop in Denver, Carmichael spent time teaching students from Salt Lake School of the Arts how to dance to Michael Jackson's hit song, "Smooth Criminal."

"To be able to share this gift, it is a dream come true," Carmichael said. "We learn Michael Jackson and his influences in his dance."

Teens like Shayne Souvall and Gray Henry never got to see Jackson perform live, but are still big fans.

"I grew up listening to Michael Jackson a lot. I used to choreograph dances to 'Man in the Mirror' in the backyard," Henry told CBS News Colorado's Dillon Thomas.

During an exclusive advanced preview, and behind the scenes tour, of MJ, Thomas was able to watch as Carmichael taught students one of the most rapid dances in Smooth Criminal.

"(Learning this from the cast) is super fun and crazy, because we don't get to meet the swings often," Henry said.

The students started out slow, learning the hand motions to the dance. Then, they slowly started learning the steps at a slowed down pace before trying it with music.

"I really like how upbeat it is," Souvall said.

"It was so hard and challenging," Henry said. "It was funny because we all laughed and were like oh, we didn't realize it was that fast."

Carmichael said it is just as difficult to teach the dance as it is to learn it.

"Whew. To do it is a challenge and a push in itself, and teaching it is just as hard," Carmichael said.

After watching the students learn the dance and perform it multiple times, the cast and crew of MJ offered Thomas the opportunity to learn the same dance.

"The dancing is super important to nail. A lot of practice, for sure," Fields-Green said.

Thomas, who has no educational or professional dance experience at all, agreed to give it a humble try. And, in doing so, was humbled by the difficulty.

"What would you say I am in for?" Thomas asked Henry and Souvall.

"A treat. A big one. A really hard fast treat," they collectively said. "Just don't stick your body up really high. Stay really grounded, because the movement is fast. Move with efficiency," Henry said.

Dance Supervisor Justin Prescott joined Fields-Green in teaching Thomas all of the dance moves.

"I remember being five (years-old) and doing Smooth Criminal," Prescott said.

Though it took a while to learn the dance, Thomas eventually managed to get enough of it down to be able to say he did it. But, fortunately for the audiences, the professionals will be the ones doing the dance on stage.

But the students who learned the dances from MJ said they were inspired to keep pursuing dance and the performing arts.

"It really proves and shows us it is possible. It takes a lot of work and dedication and drive. But, it really is possible," Henry said.

"It shows you that you really can do it, you can achieve it. If you believe in yourself, anything is possible," Carmichael said.

Coachella 2024 will kick off on Friday, April 12. K-pop artists ATEEZ and Le Sserafim will perform at the 2024 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Other global artists who will headline the show include Lana Del Rey, Tyler, the Creator, and Doja Cat.

ATEEZ’s upcoming performance at Coachella has already been dubbed historical, as they will be the first male K-pop act to take the main stage at the music festival. However, this year, ATEEZ is not the only male Korean act to headline Coachella. Korean rock band The Rose also participates in this year’s mega fest.

Performance dates of Le Sserafim and ATEEZ at Coachella 2024

ATEEZ will perform at Coachella 2024 on the Sahara stage on Friday, April 12, at 10.45 p.m. PDT. The performance will run for 50 minutes. Le Sserafim will take the same stage on Saturday, April 13, at 10.50 p.m. PDT. The Rose will headline Coachella on Sunday, April 14, at 6.25 p.m. PDT at Outdoor Theatre.

Global fans who can’t attend Coachella 2024 in person can watch the show’s live stream from the official YouTube channel starting April 12 at 4 p.m. PT. Both Coachella weekends (April 12-14 and April 19-21) will be available to fans via live stream.

Meanwhile, the setlists for both ATEEZ and Le Sserafim’s performances are raising anticipation. The K-pop octet, consisting of Hongjoong, Seonghwa, Yunho, Yeosang, San, Mingi, Wooyoung, and Jongho, is known for its electrifying energy on stage. As the first-ever K-pop boy group at Coachella, the expectation from the group is immense, and from the looks of their past setlists, fans are sure ATEEZ will deliver a memorable night.

Some of ATEEZ’s most popular songs for live stages are “Wonderland,” “Pirate King,” “Hala Hala,” “This World,” “Wake Up,” “Cyber Punk,” and more. So, all eyes are on the K-pop act to see which songs they choose from the treasure trove of hits. On the other hand, Le Sserafim will likely perform a mishmash of songs combining their recent hits, like “Easy” and their 2023 banger, “Antifragile.”
