With the compact nature of most horizontal cases, you may have to decide what is most important to you (e.g. drive bays in these cases often come at the cost of fan mounts or GPU space).

We didn’t quite want to give this Cooler Master pick the top spot partially due to its slightly more square/cube shape.

However, know that if this fits your idea of a horizontal case aesthetically, you’re going to be in for a treat, This chassis is a beast.

Somehow this unit manages to host capacity for up to 2 x 5.25″ drives, 4 x 3.5″ drives, and 4 x 2.5″ drives. If you don’t need all that in your build, then it’s simply more room for other parts to breathe/fit!

The case has room for plenty of airflow/cooling (up to 5 fans, with 2 XtraFlo fans pre-installed) and space for a modest set of water cooling radiators.

Included on the front panel are the usual I/O connectors (2 x USB3.0/audio ports). We’re pleased to see that the build is largely made of thick steel. The feel/quality of the HAF XB EVO is superb and it comes across even better in person.

One big plus for novice builders : this case was designed for you. Some features have been included to make the build process as easy as possible. Most notably screwless installation and a removable motherboard tray (trust us: trying to install a PC in a more compact case can be a pain, so this is a massive plus!).

Aside from that, the key secondary factor is if you’re looking for a gaming PC case. The HAF XB EVO has significantly more room for your CPU cooler and GPU. If your heart is set on the GD09B, you can certainly make that work for a powerful gaming build, but it will require a more careful selection of hardware.

This Thermaltake range is quite special. We were very close to ranking this as the best overall case despite its high price point.

With a full-glass design, once you have installed your components in the Core P5, it is truly a sight to behold and one of the most beautiful cases available in today’s market.

The legs are fully removable, allowing this case to look as good horizontally as it does vertically.

There is plenty of space to play with when building here. But more than that, the case is very modular/customizable. Thermaltake is aware that when you invest in a chassis this transparent you’re trying to build a PC that is fully visible. The ability to install GPUs, drives, and other components in various positions is something the P5 excels at more than most other options on the market.

With the great design of this case, comes the recommendation to include water cooling if possible. Given the high visibility, you’ll be wanting to avoid dust, and air cooling builds will cause more of that. If you want to go down this route, however, the excellent cabling management capabilities should allow you to clear decent airflow paths and keep it relatively clean.

This case may look intimidating to assemble, but it is actually quite a beginner-friendly unit. Being able to detach the glass during your build, makes the overall process a lot easier than traditional cases!

Thermaltake Core P1 vs P3 vs P5 vs P7 vs P8 vs P90:

Here we’ve focussed on P5 as the main choice, but there are other great options for this range. Note that all of these cases support horizontal placing.

Aside from the obvious presentation differences (especially the beastly P90…), the biggest differences here are in the size/form factor.

2023 update: Thermaltake has released a new variant; the Core P6 . It’s a great addition to the series and takes some of the best parts from its predecessors. Namely a customizable choice between an open-air design like the P1/P3 or an enclosed P8 design, and an ATX form factor that will satisfy most builders. The case has a removable stand so you can set up a great horizontal placement. If you’re an ATX builder, we still like the Core P5 the most as we consider it the best value; but if you’re drawn to the P6 and don’t mind paying the premium, go for it!

The cooling should be fine for most builds but bear in mind that the space available is less than most mid-towers.

The front I/O panel is great and surprisingly one of the most plentiful on this list: with 2 x USB 3.0, 2 x USB 2.0 / standard audio ports.

We’re back to SilverStone for the best horizontal microATX computer case.

With a very high-quality steel/aluminum mix build and compact form, this unit is durable and looks fantastic on display.

We’re getting into the smaller builds now. Don’t expect to fit a traditional gaming GPU in here (perfect for those who are after a build that utilizes onboard CPU graphics).

However, we like this case because it still manages to offer some good internal space despite the tight dimensions.

This includes drive allotment for 1 x 5.25 ” external, 2 x 3.5″ and 1 x 2.5″ internal. Cooling-wise, there’s space for 4 x 80mm fans and 4 x low profile / 1 x utility expansion slots.

Sure, this may not sound like much compared to some of the others above, but for the size? It’s impressive. With its ventilation, if you can keep down the cabling and components not needed, you’ll manage decent airflow.

SilverStone even suggests you can install traditional ATX/PS2 PSUs up to 140mm. Impressive considering even when many vertical Micro ATX cases don’t support these.

With the Node 202, they’ve managed to create an incredibly attractive, low-volume case that would be perfect for gaming builds and those looking for a console-sized portable alternative .

Despite the compactness, there is still decent room for a powerful GPU (PCI-E riser card included, supporting up to 310mm in length!) to go alongside your mITX motherboard. That said, remember to check dimensions as we’re getting into the smallest of cases.

We’re really impressed that Fractal has managed to keep this case suitable for gamers (especially considering our mATX pick further above doesn’t allow for full-size GPUS!).

The front I/O panel is the standard for small builds: 2 x USB 3.0 and audio inputs.

The inner layout provides decent ventilation for both the CPU and GPU, on top of offering 2 x 120mm fan mount options and 3 included dust filters (good for the form factor).

We would’ve liked to have seen a little more space for a larger CPU cooler, but there are plenty of specialist ITX options available that are designed to be included in these tight clearances.

Fractal is simply one of the best manufacturers of PC cases today and this is another great example of why. If you’re going for a mini-ITX build, you’ll be hard-pressed to find something so visually pleasing, high-quality, spacious (yet compact), and impressively low-cost as the Design Node 202. For this specific form factor, this one feels like a no-brainer.

A third SilverStone case in this list may seem like a lot, but they’re masters of the flat PC case for a reason.

If you have the budget and space, we would recommend the Thermaltake P7 discussed above within our P5 pick. But overall, the value of the GD08 is fantastic.

Not only do you get the high-build quality (including a stunning aluminum front panel), but also an incredibly roomy environment that will give you the freedom to effectively balance airflow, cable management, and beefy components (with 7 expansion slots, up to 6 fans of varying sizes and good PSU/GPU compatibility).

The front panel is quite basic with standard audio inputs and 2 x USB 3.0 (would’ve been nice to see 4 USB ports on a case this size, but not a big deal considering most larger motherboards have plenty).

The case also has decent features to allow for an easy build. With the entire top being removable, you can easily get good access to its spacious layout (I know we’ve talked about its size a lot, but if you have the room, it really makes life a whole lot easier when building and managing temperatures).

Silverstone GD09 vs GD08: Although we highly rate the GD08, the reason we rank the GD09 at the top of the list is that we think it represents a better balance between price & space for the average PC builder. The GD09 still offers ample room for cooling, a mid-sized GPU, and drives for the HTPC builders, without becoming excessively expensive (and imposingly large) like the GD08.

That said, it ultimately comes down to your needs.

The size and quality of the GD08 make it a superb option if you’re looking to build a large-scale media center/server PC or a high-end gaming machine.

Budget Horizontal ITX Case: Thermaltake Core V1

This tiny little cube was a decent runner-up to our ITX pick. It’s one of the most recommended ITX cases on What in Tech and is worth considering if you like the look (note there is also a great-looking white option available too).

At a very impressive low pricepoint (one of the cheapest on the list), the Core V1 still manages to boast a great build quality. With some steel components and a ventilation setup designed to get the most cooling out of its tiny space (up to 3 fans with 1 200mm one included, very impressive for the price point).

Bear in mind that while the cooling isn’t bad, you can only do so well with such a small setup! If you’re looking to run something monstrous, stick to one of the larger cases above.

Given the layout and the “tiny cube” design, it isn’t necessarily the friendliest to all PC component shapes/sizes and you’ll need to be careful about the dimensions of your parts for this one (you’re certainly not fitting the large PSU/GPUs in here!).

It’s worth calling out that some users have seen quality issues with the Core V1 which is why we didn’t give it a top pick. With a 3-year warranty, if you’re one of the unlucky ones, you’ll be covered; but this is, of course, a risk that many would rather pay more money not to go through.

The VSK2000 comes with a little less space for extras than our other Micro-ATX picks (4 expansion slots, 1 x 5.25″, 1 x 3.5″, and 1 x 2.5″ drives) and little room for air cooling (but one front fan included).

Despite this, the case seems to manage decent airflow, likely due to its decent ventilation and cable management options.

The Goodisory A01 is an attractive mini-ITX chassis that’s ideal for a fan-less build. Constructed of aluminum, it’s available in a variety of brushed color finishes including Black, Silver, and Red. It also comes in a choice of two different designs including with or without a glass top.

Once inside, you will notice a hard drive tray that can fit either two 2.5″ SSD’s, or one 2.5″ and 3.5″ HDD. It’s worth noting that the tray is located directly above the motherboard so if you do decide to use a standard 2.5” drive, this only leaves enough room to mount a 55mm cooler height.

In addition to this, the small form factor size can house graphics cards up to 180mm, along with a Pico PSU. Unfortunately, it does not include a PSU so you will have to buy one separately.

For ventilation, the AO1 features multiple slots in the side, and more in the top if you go for the aluminum plate top. Conversely, the glass model has a sealed top. This means if you do go for the glass model, you will have to raise the top with some rubber rings to attain adequate thermal temps.

Al in all, if you’re searching for a mini-ITX PC case that can sit flat on the desk, it’s a great budget choice.

4. Golden Field N-2S

The Golden Field N-2S is a Mini-ITX case with a cube shape design. Also made of an aluminum alloy, it has a smart, brushed finish that makes it a pleasure to view on the desk. Moreover, the small form factor footprint prevents it from occupying too much space.

Starting the build is a breeze thanks to the tool-free panels that pull straight off the chassis. Once inside, the motherboard sits in a horizontal position on the floor of the PC case. It can fit 270mm max-length graphics cards and a 140mm CPU cooler without hitting the drive bracket.

The drive bracket has room for both a 2.5” and a 3.5” hard drive along the top, however, there’s also space for two more 2.5” SSD’s on one side of the chassis. Besides this, the interior can accommodate a standard ATX PSU, along with a 120mm case fan or water cooler at the back.

Unusually, the inputs/ outputs are on the side of the front panel rather than next to the power button on the front. Although this does look slightly unnatural with inputs plugged in, it should add a touch of convenience for most people.

The SilverStone RVZ03-ARGB is a small form factor, mini-ATX case that fits neatly in any environment. Constructed of a steel body with a reinforced plastic outer shell, it boasts a positive air pressure design for excellent cooling, quietness, and dust-prevention.

To achieve this, the case is built uniquely in that a plastic outer shell runs around the core of the chassis. Besides housing numerous vents and adding a second layer of protection to the case, it blends into the “Raven-style” front to display a beautiful RGB strip.

Inside the case are two separate brackets to keep your components secure; a PSU bracket and a video card bracket. The PSU bracket can fit full-size ATX power supplies. Whereas the VGA bracket can support GPUs up to 330mm, in addition to two 2.5 SSD’s on one side and one more on the other.

In terms of the build, The 202 is constructed in three parts; a center frame and a top/ bottom cover that sandwich it together. This not only contributes to a hassle-free installation but also creates a dust-free interior with air vents in optimal locations.

As previously mentioned, the center frame is split into two chambers. On one side there’s room for the PSU and a MoBo with a 56mm CPU cooler height, whereas the other fits the GPU. For memory, a drive gauge slots over both chambers. It can store two 2.5” SSD’s, with one on each side.

Thanks to the included stand, you can position the PC case in either a vertical or horizontal orientation. Both placements allow easy access to the I/O’s on the front of the case. These include two USB 3.0’s as well as two 3.5mm audio jacks.

Overall, the 202 is a top chassis with a space-efficient design.

1. IN WIN B1 – Mini-ITX Tower Case

The IN WIN B1 Tower is a small and portable case that at first glance appears like a backpack. Constructed entirely of ABS plastic with a tempered glass top, it has a rigid exterior that incorporates ventilation into the design, while not compromising the form or function.

Inside the extremely compact 3.3L chassis is just enough room for a mini ITX motherboard with a cooler height of 60mm. Unfortunately, the small form factor size provides no room for expansion cards. As a result, this does mean you would have to go for an APU only system.

On the plus side, it comes with a custom 200W 80 plus gold power supply unit, which is more than enough power for any APU on the market. It’s worth noting that this PSU is unique to the PC case itself so the option to upgrade in the future is pretty much limited.

As you can see from the picture, the B1 offers plenty of ventilation thanks to the circumference of vents that wrap around the sides. Once you pop off the top panel, you will also notice a strategically placed stock fan and dust filter that come with the case.

Furthermore, we particularly like that the B1 features two mounting stands. This allows you to position the PC case in both a vertical and horizontal position.

The In Win CJ712 is a slim 8L, SFF chassis with a smart interior structure. It supports Micro-ATX motherboards, 240mm graphics cards, and two 2.5″ SSDs or one 3.5″/ 2.5″ HDD. The deal also includes a free Flex ATX 265W power supply and a 90mm fan at the front.

In terms of appearance, the sleek exterior is relatively minimalistic. No noticeable branding can be seen anywhere on the shell, and for decoration, there’s only a pattern of vents on the front. Next to the vents are four front-facing USB ports and two 3.5mm jacks.

Once inside, you will notice a drive tray sits directly above the motherboard area. Unfortunately, this only leaves room for a 45mm cooler height. As a result, it’s probably best to purchase a low profile heatsink with this case so there’s some room for your SSD’s.

Another thing to be aware of is that there’s not much ventilation inside the chassis apart from the stock fan. Hence, this might be another area in need of an upgrade.

Even if it does come with a few minor issues, it’s still a well-built PC case that you can position flat.

HTPCs and horizontal cases have fallen out of fashion, but they're kept alive by a loving community (myself included). Horizontal PC cases have many advantages, especially when it comes to space-saving. You can tuck them underneath monitors, entertainment centers, and TV stands for gaming or multimedia in general.

SilverStone Technology Grandia 11

The style, the form factor, the I/O—the SilverStone Grandia 11 has it all. It's also one of the few horizontal PC cases that can fit an NVIDIA 40 series GPU horizontally!

It’s one thing to fit an RTX 4090, and it’s another thing entirely to keep it cool, let alone a high-end CPU at the same time. Luckily, the dual-chamber design of the SilverStone Grandia 11 keeps the heat generated by the two from mingling. You can fit a 240mm radiator in the main chamber while fitting two 120mm in the smaller chamber to help keep your GPU cool.

The cherry on top is at the front of the SilverStone Grandia 11, which is all mesh. No part of the case has acrylic or tempered glass panels. Other than the bottom of the case, each side has some form of ventilation.

The Taku also has cut-outs in the top plate designed for cable management and routing. Cryorig really thought things through with the Taku, and it shows.

We’re recommending the Core P3 as it sits right in the middle of the range. It supports ATX motherboards and has enough room for water cooling and high-end components. You could go for the slightly larger Core P5 , but we don’t think it’s a good recommendation for most users due to the $250 premium. You’re only really getting 480 mm radiator support and an extra fan mount on the P5.

The Thermaltake Core P3 follows what the company calls its “Dismantlable Modular Design” philosophy. The 0.2-inch tempered glass panel can be removed for easy access to your computer’s innards. It’s not just the tempered glass, though; the whole case consists of discreet, modular panels that can be disassembled and put together quickly and easily.

Given the case’s open-air nature, we recommend going with a liquid-cooled set up in the Core P3. Air cooling will be fine too, but you might encounter more dust problems than usual since there aren’t any filters to keep the dust away. With a water cooling setup, you’ll at least only have to worry about dust on your radiator.

It’s worth noting that GPU length is limited to a pretty standard 11 inches if you have a radiator and reservoir installed. That’s still enough space for a beefy GPU, but a water-cooled P3 probably isn’t the case for you if you’re rocking something incredibly long like an RTX 3090 .

Like Fractal’s other cases, the Node 202’s design is discreet and minimal. Combined with its small size, it makes the Node 202 perfect for a PC that needs to blend in with your furniture and decor. It’d make a great HTPC case under a TV, or perhaps a bedroom PC for nighttime media before bed.

That said, Fractal’s made sure the Node 202 can fit a beefy gaming rig, too. The Node 202 puts the motherboard and GPU in separate chambers, improving cooling and allowing you to install bigger GPUs than you might expect.

The GPU chamber has space for two 120 mm fans to cool your card. The motherboard chamber doesn’t have any fans, but the panels are perforated to help with airflow for your CPU cooler and PSU fan. These airflow grilles and fan intakes have dust covers installed from the factory, a nice touch on Fractal’s part.

Fractal also sells a version of the Node 202 that includes a 450 watt Integra PSU. That’s more than enough power for a decent gaming rig. If you don’t have an SFX PSU, this is a pretty decent option. Just so long as you’re not planning to load your SFF PC up with an Nvidia RTX 3080 or something equally power-hungry.

4. SilverStone GD09

SilverStone’s GD09 is one of those rare beasts: a relatively compact horizontal PC case with support for an optical drive. 5.25” drive support is rare enough in standard vertical cases, so seeing one here was a welcome surprise.

Optical drive support makes the GD09 perfect for a living room HTPC that needs to play DVDs or Blu-Ray discs. SilverStone definitely had this sort of use in mind, pointing out how its 14-inch depth fits “comfortably inside [a] home theater cabinet.”

A 5.25” bay isn’t the only unique thing about the GD09. SilverStone also lists support for SSI CEB motherboards, which are slightly wider (10.5 inches) than ATX motherboards (9.6 inches). This might seem a bit odd, but it’s SilverStone’s way of saying that the GD09 supports so-called “EATX” motherboards like the Gigabyte X299X AORUS Master .

Whether you need to use an EATX motherboard in a case that’s so HTPC-minded is a whole other matter, but at least the option’s there. Speaking of options, the GD09 can also be rack-mounted by adding SilverStone’s RA02 rackmount ears. If you want to rack up your home PC Linus Sebastian style , the GD09’s a solid, affordable choice.

Can I run a desktop computer on its side?

Desktop computers can be configured as a tower case as shown in the picture or a desktop case. With either type of computer case, the computer is designed to be set on its bottom and not on its side. Before changing the computer's orientation, keep the below considerations in mind.

CD or DVD drive operation

CD (compact disc) or DVD (digital versatile disc) drives with trays work best when the drive is laying horizontal. However, all of the latest drives have small clips on all four corners of the circle that helps keep the disc in place. As long as you insert the disc properly and it does not fall out as its being inserted discs can still be read vertically. If your computer does not have a disc, it won't be concern.

Case fans and vents

Computers have case fans and vents that help direct the airflow to the computer and keep it cool. Because vertical tower computers take cold air from the floor and eject it as it rises, laying these computers on their sides may restrict the airflow. If you do decide to lay a desktop computer on its side, at the very least make sure that no vents or fan openings are covered.

Many believe a hard drive on its side or upside down causes problems. However, both traditional computer hard drives and SSD (solid-state drive) that are installed correctly work in any orientation and having them on their side does not hinder their operation.

How to Rotate Your Display in Windows 11 or 10

With today's computers, we typically view content in landscape (aka horizontal) mode. After all, most modern monitors are designed to operate in landscape mode with power and settings buttons along the bottom bezel. A lot of the time, but not always, their included stands don’t allow you to rotate them 90 degrees.

However, even if your stand doesn’t let you rotate, you can use a wall or desk mount (see how to mount your monitor ), which makes hanging a monitor in portrait mode easy. But after you’ve physically positioned your monitor, you still need to make sure that the Windows desktop appears in portrait mode. And what about those who have a tablet and need to enable or disable display auto-rotation?

Below, we’ll show you several ways to rotate your display in Windows 11 or 10.

Using the Settings App to Rotate the Display

1. Launch the Settings app

2. Navigate to System -> Display

3. Select your monitor if you have multiple monitors.

4. Select from the Display orientation men. There are options for Landscape, Portrait, Landscape (Flipped) and Portrait (flipped).

5. Confirm your new display orientation from the drop-down menu; Windows gives you 15 seconds to keep the new setting or it will automatically revert to your default setting.

How to Enable or Disable Rotation Lock

If you're using a tablet, there may be instances when you want to lock your display into a certain orientation without the OS changing it automatically. Most Windows tablets are set up by default to automatically rotate the screen based on how you are holding it via the use of accelerometers.

If your tablet doesn't currently have auto-rotation

1. Launch the Settings app.

2. Navigate to System -> Settings

4. Toggle Rotation lock on or off.

With Rotation lock off, Windows manages the orientation of the display. If you leave Rotation lock on, you'll need to manually adjust the orientation (as detailed in the steps in the first section of this guide).

Rotate the screen on any Windows PC by going to Settings > Display and then changing the orientation. There are usually special controls to rotate your screen provided by your graphics drivers, too.

Windows can rotate your screen without any extra software. This is especially useful if you have a desktop monitor that rotates. Many PCs have hotkeys that can rotate your screen, too, and these are easy to press accidentally.

To rotate your screen on Windows 10, right-click your desktop, and then select the "Display Settings" command.

On Windows 10, you'll be taken to the Settings > System > Display window.

Locate the Orientation option under Resolution, click the dropdown menu under it, and then choose your preferred screen orientation — Landscape, Portrait, Landscape (flipped), or Portrait (flipped.)

If you don't see a screen orientation option in the Settings app on Windows 10 or the Control Panel on Windows 7, try updating your computer's graphics drivers . This option may be missing if you're using generic video drivers that aren't appropriate for your computer's graphics hardware.

Some PCs have hotkeys that quickly rotate the screen when pressed. These are provided by the Intel graphics drivers and are only enabled on some PCs. If your PC's display suddenly rotated while you were pressing something on the keyboard, you probably triggered the hotkey accidentally.

To rotate your screen with hotkeys, press Ctrl+Alt+Arrow. For example, Ctrl+Alt+Up Arrow returns your screen to its normal upright rotation, Ctrl+Alt+Right Arrow rotates your screen 90 degrees, Ctrl+Alt+Down Arrow flips it upside down (180 degrees), and Ctrl+Alt+Left Arrow rotates it 270 degrees.

You can change these hotkeys — or disable them, if you want — using the Hot Key Manager tool in the Intel Graphics Control Panel or the Intel Command Center on your PC. To access it, click the small blue icon on your Task Bar, launch it from the Start Menu, or press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to open the Intel Command Center. Click Options, and then head to Support(Four small squares) > Hot Key Manager.

If you don't see the Intel Graphics Settings tool on your PC, you probably aren't using Intel graphics. If you don't see the screen rotation shortcuts on the Hot Key Manager screen, they aren't available on your PC.

Convertible PCs and tablets running Windows 10 automatically rotate their screens as the device orientation changes. This works just like modern iPhones and Android smartphones. To stop your screen from rotating automatically , you can enable Rotation Lock.

To do so, open the Action Center by clicking the notification icon at the right side of your taskbar, or by pressing Windows+A.

Click or tap the "Rotation Lock" quick action tile to lock your screen in its current orientation. Click or tap the tile again to disable Rotation Lock.

The Rotation Lock option is also available at Settings > System > Display.

If you don't see the option in either place, then your device doesn't support automatic screen rotation because it doesn't have built-in accelerometer hardware.

If the Rotation Lock tile appears grayed out, you must put your convertible PC into tablet mode — for example, by rotating its screen around or by detaching its screen from the keyboard. Rotation Lock isn't available in standard laptop mode, as the screen will never automatically rotate itself in standard laptop mode.

Options for rotating your PC's screen may also be available in your Intel or NVIDIA, depending on what graphics hardware your PC has. However, the built-in Windows option should work on all PCs. If Windows can't change your screen rotation for some reason, you may be able to do it with your graphics driver's control panel.

On PCs with Intel graphics, launch the Intel Command Center from the Start Menu, or by clicking the small blue icon on the Task Bar. Select the Display tab, which is the small monitor icon, and choose a display orientation. This option wasn't available on one of our PCs with Intel graphics, so we had to use the standard Windows Settings app instead. It will only be present here on some PCs.

Older computers with Intel Graphics will need to use the Intel Control Panel instead of the Command Center. It can be launched by right-clicking empty space on the desktop and clicking "Intel Graphics Settings," or something similar.

On PCs with NVIDIA graphics, right-click the desktop and select "NVIDIA Control Panel." Select "Rotate Display" under Display and choose your screen orientation.

The NVIDIA Control Panel forces you to confirm your choice, so you don't accidentally invert your screen in a way to makes it difficult to use.

Rotating your display is one of those "If you give a mouse a cookie" scenarios — once someone learns to orient a display in a different way, they'll have one of two thoughts. The first is usually "It would be hilarious to invert my friend's display so they can't use their computer right." The second is "Now I need a monitor to put in portrait mode!"

If you're going to put a monitor in portrait mode, make sure you get one that has a stand that allows it to rotate.
