Take a dreamy Halong Bay cruise

Board a traditional Vietnamese junk boat and cruise the emerald waters and limestone karsts of Halong Bay. Visit Cua Van Fishing Village

We’ll visit the ancient Cua Van Fishing Village on our Halong Bay cruise, and stop to meet the locals who live in the traditional floating houses. It’s the largest fishing village in Halong Bay, with around 180 floating houses set on gentle waters surrounded by beautiful limestone mountains.

Help local farmers in Thanh Dong Organic Village

Our Local Specialists will take you to Thanh Dong Organic Village in Hoi An, where you’ll meet the local farmers and spend time learning about their daily working routines. You’ll also get to help the farmers in the garden and discover their unique methods that leave a positive impact on their environment.

Visit the UNESCO-listed Imperial Citadel in Hue

Jump on the back of a cyclo and take a journey to the Imperial Citadel in Hue, the former capital and home of the Nguyen emperors. You can enter the large square fortress and explore the ancient palaces and temples, and we’ll even take you inside the Purple Forbidden City.

Temple of Literature

One of Hanoi’s most beautiful sites, the Temple of Literature is an ancient complex built in 1070 and dedicated to Confucius and scholars. It’s also home to the Imperial Academy, Vietnam’s first university and you can see the historic pavilions, turtle steles, courtyards, a lake of literature and the Well of Heavenly Clarity.

My Son Temples

The My Son Temples are a complex of ancient Hindu temples, built between the 4th and 14th century to worship the god Shiva. It was once the site of royal religious ceremonies and the burial place for Cham royalty, and today you can explore the ruins of this UNESCO-listed site.

One of Vietnam’s most famous dishes, pho is a noodle soup that’s loved all over the world. It’s made from a slow-stewed beef broth poured over rice noodles, and topped with slices of chicken or beef. You can also add a variety of herbs, sauces and chilli to your tastes.

Also known as rice paper spring rolls, goi cuon are light and fresh rolls with plenty of flavor. A rice paper wrapping is filled with bean sprouts, lettuce, meat or tofu and other crunchy vegetables. It’s best served with a sweet or spicy sauce for dipping.

Banh xeo is a thin crepe filled with shrimp, pork, bean sprouts and fresh herbs. It’s a classic northern Vietnamese dish with French influences, and the best way to eat it is cut it up in bite-sized pieces, roll it up in lettuce leaves and dunk it into the zesty side sauces.

A Travel Guide to Visit Vietnam in August

A Travel Guide to Visit Vietnam in August

Many people decide to leave for a holiday in the middle of the year. The world is big, and there are so many wonderful countries to discover, among which Vietnam is a place in the list for the unique oriental culture, being well-known for hospitality and definitely a developing country after a long time of war. With so many questions about how Vietnam in August is, the Izitour team wants to share our knowledge with you.

Things to know when you visit Vietnam in august

1.1. northern vietnam, 1.2. northern mountain of vietnam, 1.3. central vietnam, 1.4. southern vietnam, 2. the flow of tourists and the cost of travel to vietnam in august, 3.1. places to visit in vietnam in august, 3.2. sea in vietnam in august, 4. vietnam holidays in august 2024, 5. recommended itineraries for travelling to vietnam in august, 1. all information about weather, temperature and climate in vietnam in august.

Planning to travel to Vietnam in August , travellers should note down some of the main characteristics about weather and climate to pack your suitable luggage.

August arrives with many signs of autumn in the North of Vietnam. Although the temperature is still high this month, there are still light winds blowing, making the atmosphere cooler and less stuffy. The average daily temperature remains close to the peak, at around 32oC. August is also the rainy month of the year with some sudden storms and downpours. However, on days without storms, especially in Ha Long Bay, the weather in August is good enough for trips. On the heavily rainy days, the weather in Lan Ha Bay will be better than in Halong Bay because its limestone rock system is more intense.

visit capital vietnam in august

In the northern mountains, the weather is cooler with the temperature around 29oC. During August, the rice fields are deep green because they are almost ripe within the next month. Travelling to the Northwest would be more pleasant than heading to the Northeast as heavy showers can affect your trips.

sapa vietnam in august

In August, Central Vietnam is beautiful with blue skies and less rain. With the autumn breeze, it is cooler than the other summer months. However, on stormy days in Northern Vietnam, it also rains in the Phong Nha and surrounding, water level rising, so tourists can not visit caves.

South Vietnam in August, especially in the Mekong River Delta area, is rainy. There are even floods. For many of us, floods are a bad thing but local people in the Mekong Delta really like this season. With rising water levels, thousand schools of fish arrive in the area which encourages fishing activities. Furthermore, the floods also bring alluvium for agriculture.

Although mentioned as the flood season, the rains in August are reported with the shortest duration and the average temperature is around 30oC.

August is normally not the period that is too crowded with tourism. However, it should be noted that the first half of August still falls on the summer holidays so there are still many Vietnamese families on their vacation, especially at the seaside of Da Nang, Quy Nhon, Nha Trang or in the area such as the Bay of Tonkin. So if you want to take advantage of your holiday for a few days at the beach, you need to book the hotel in advance to get the best services at the same price. In this month, there are many promotions of hotels (especially 4-5 stars) and airlines.

3. Things to see in Vietnam in August

Hanoi : August is the first autumn month in Hanoi, you still feel the heat but you can also feel the coolness in the air. The streets like Phan Dinh Phung and Hoang Dieu are covered by the yellow leaves and you can see the street women selling “Com” - premature rice, a typical dish of Hanoi autumn. The scenery is very poetic, indeed there are also the themed songs and poems of Hanoi in August.

hanoi vietnam in august

Sapa : In August, if you go to Sapa, you can see the yellow terraces of ripe rice. It depends on the year. If the locals in Sapa harvest early, we can have amazing photos of ethnic people working on the terraced rice field. On dry days, the Sapa’s sky is very deep and you can participate in a special type of tourism: "chasing the clouds", that is, get up early to see clouds when they are still low, it seems that you are walking on clouds. Furthermore, soaking your feet in traditional herbal water of the Dzao ethnic group in Sapa is also a very special experience to refresh after the long trekking day.

Mai Chau and Pu Luong : Being the countries in the North-West, Mai Chau and Pu Luong offer a very fascinating panorama. Going for a bicycle ride or trekking amidst the intense green rice fields and admiring the houses on stilts and daily activities of the locals make it a truly getaway from the chaotic cities’ life. August is also the season of "mang" - the bamboo shoots.

Lan Ha Bay : Lan Ha Bay is located in the centre of the Cat Ba World Biosphere Reserve. Arriving at Lan Ha Bay, you can not only see the beauty in harmony between limestone rocks and clear water but also experience the adventures of Cat Ba National Park, caves, fisherman's village and admire the diverse ecosystem in this area.

Kayaking vietnam in august

Central Vietnam : All of central Vietnam including Hue, Hoi An and Da Nang have very nice weather. There is no longer the sultry heat with high humidity like in the summer, the Central Vietnam in August ’s climate is cooler but you can still take advantage of the sea for a seaside stay. In August, since there are not so many international tourists, the Forbidden Citadel of Hue and the ancient citadel of Hoi An are less touristy. Strolling and bicycling will be more pleasant because it is less hot.

Mekong River Delta : Because it's the flood season, we can see so many activities of the locals. Even the floating markets are more vivid with lots of boats around here and there to trade. Some people ask the price of the goods while others peel the fruits to sell directly to the market. Waking up early to  enjoy your breakfasts on a boat will be an interesting experience. In the Mekong Delta there are many floating markets such as Cai Rang, Phong Dien, which are not to be missed once you arrive in Vietnam.

mekong vietnam in august

Like other summer months, in August you can choose among these beaches to relax.

Lang Co Beach (Hue) : This is a very beautiful and less touristy beach being in the transfer stage from Hue to Da Nang. With many resorts, Lang Co offers a great get-away for any travellers.

Bac My An Beach and Non Nuoc Beach (Da Nang) : These beaches are located halfway between Da Nang and Hoi An. In this area, the beaches are less touristy but you should usually book a seaside stay at 5-star resorts such as Fusion, Naman Retreat,... in advance to guarantee a nice-view room.

danang vietnam in august

Ha My Beach and An Bang Beach (Hoi An) : They are not exactly near the ancient centre of Hoi An but it is easy to reach. You can take a taxi or use the free hotel bus. Some hotels offer bicycles, shuttle buses on a schedule, which you should ask the receptionist to know exactly.

Quy Nhon : In recent years, Quy Nhon has become one of the most favourite places by Vietnamese people. Quy Nhon’s sea is endowed with emerald water and secluded nice beaches. Its cost of living is quite low so you can taste seafood at a very reasonable price. Besides, travelling to Ky Co - Eo Gio or Nu Hoang beach is a recommended activity when you come to Quy Nhon.

Beaches of Nha Trang Bay : The beaches in Nha Trang are among the most beautiful in Vietnam with white sand and blue clear water. Depending on your preference to stay in the busy locality or stay in the quiet areas, you can decide to stay in the city or visit the beaches in Cam Ranh Bay, Ninh Van Bay. Heading towards the south of Nha Trang, you can reach Ninh Thuan, a still very wild country with few hotels (there is a very nice 6-star resort)

Mui Ne : The beaches in Mui Ne are also recommended during this time. With abundant winds, the sea of Mui Ne is ideal for surfing. Besides, going to Mui Ne, you can also visit the famous picturesque sand dunes.

Vu Lan Festival (August 18, 2024) . The Vu Lan festival, also known as Hungry Ghost Day, is one of the main festivals of Buddhism (Mahayana) which takes place on July 15 of the lunar calendar. It is held annually to show children's gratitude to their parents and ancestors.

Hungry Ghost Festival (August 18, 2024) . Lunar July is the time for everyone to memorise ancestors, sending offerings and foods to them, however, there are believed to be spirits who receive nothing so normally a table full of offerings is set up for the hungry ghosts on the street. Those souls will receive the thoughts of the living. This festival normally takes place on lunar July 14.

In general, August is a good time to visit certain places in Vietnam. Sometimes it is likely to encounter storms, but you can admire the beauty of the whole country.

Visit the famous Reunification Palace and hear the story of the end of the war, take a sobering trip to the War Remnants Museum and stop by the beautiful Romanesque Notre Dame Cathedral. Stroll the city’s captivating streets and admire its many French colonial buildings along the way, including the main post office, and the gorgeous Ho Chi Minh City Hall, modelled on Paris’s Hotel de Ville. This morning after breakfast, head on a half-day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels – an extensive underground network (some 200 kilometres) of tunnels dug initially by the Viet Minh and later expanded by the Viet Cong. They contained hospitals, dwellings and schools and were used extensively for refuge and storage, as well as being a military base. As you explore this extraordinary labyrinth your leader will explain more about its history and the 1968 Tet Offensive. A section of the tunnels has been widened to allow visitors to get a feel for what the underground life must have been like. Please note that these tunnels will be hot and can get claustrophobic, so there is an option if you’d like to view from above ground. Later this afternoon, fly to Dalat.

  • Golf Valley Hotel or similar (1 night)
  • Ho Chi Minh City - Cu Chi Tunnels

Today’s flight is approximately 1 hour.

Dalat is high in Vietnam’s southern highlands, and is surrounded by hills, pine forests, lakes and waterfalls – it is a natural mountain paradise. Dalat, commonly known as the City of Flowers, is part of a region ideal for growing crops and flowers that cannot be otherwise grown in Vietnam, because of its temperate climate and high rainfall. Today you will have the chance to learn some more about your morning brew and see behind the scenes of speciality coffee production during a tour of a local family-run coffee farm. Follow the journey from growth to harvesting and roasting, and taste some of the carefully crafted final result yourself, leaving with a new appreciation for the humble cup of coffee. Sit down for lunch with the group, then enjoy a free afternoon. You may like to visit the historic Bao Dai palace, or perhaps take a wander around the vibrant local markets.

  • Dalat - Son Pacarama Coffee Farm Visit
  • Dalat - Local Lunch

Enjoy a free morning in Dalat – perhaps head to the Crazy House – a bizarre guesthouse commissioned by avant-garde architect Hang Nga, who still lives on site. In the afternoon, take a short flight to Danang. From here you will embark on a short ride by private vehicle to Hoi An, originally a Cham port town. Hoi An is renowned for its specialist tailors and some do same-day turnaround, so perhaps take this opportunity to get some clothing made from some unique local fabrics. You might also like to visit a local workshop to learn how to make your own rice paper. A Vietnamese cooking class too is a great way to familiarise yourself with some age-old culinary techniques, not to mention feasting on the fruits of your own labour!

  • Mulberry Collection Silk Eco or similar (1 night)

The flight route from Dalat to Da Nang has been suspended with no clear indication of when it will resume. Until flights on the route become available, you will fly to Da Nang via Ho Chi Minh City, adding approximately 2.5 hours to the total travelling time.

Join your leader on a walking tour this morning to discover the Hoi An’s stunning architecture and unique mix of influences. With its charming low tiled houses and tranquil feel, this is a delightful town to walk around. Start with a visit to an opulently decorated historic house that was once home to a prominent trader. Cross the Japanese Covered Bridge, stop by the Chinese assembly hall and pay a visit to a local museum to learn more about the history you uncovered on your walk. Afterwards, sit down to a delicious lunch with the group. This afternoon you are free to make the most of Hoi An and its surrounding areas. Your leader will be able to help with suggestions for extra activities in Hoi An and the nearby countryside.

  • Hoi An - Old Town walking tour
  • Hoi An - Food Adventure Urban Adventure - USD44

A significant port of the Champa Kingdom for centuries, many Cham descendants are still living in Hoi An today. This morning your leader will guide you around My Son Cham, a collection of temples constructed by the Kings of Champa and dating back to the 4th century. Learn about the ancient architecture of this UNESCO site, and see the craters created by American bombs during the war. After exploring the temples, experience an Apsara dance performance, featuring sparkling traditional costumes, panpipes, and drums. The afternoon is free for more exploration, or to relax by the pool at your hotel.

  • Hoi An - My Son Tour

Depart Hoi An today bound for Hue, the former imperial capital and hub of Vietnam's historic past. En route, pass through the Hai Van Pass – a scenic mountainous stretch of highway with views across Lang Co beach. Arrive in Hue and discover its eclectic mix of frenetic streets and peaceful beauty. In the afternoon you will visit the Imperial Citadel, including the Forbidden Purple City. The latter was almost completely destroyed during the Tet Offensive in the Vietnam War, but its humble, foliage-covered ruins remain a testament to its proud history. Here your leader will provide some insight into the horrific damage endured during the war.

  • Thanh Lich Royal Boutique Hotel or similar (1 night)
  • Hue - Imperial City half day guided tour

Today’s total driving time is approximately 3 hours.

Loosen your belt and ready your appetite as today you will be diving into Hue’s fabulous culinary scene. First up, head to a street food eatery for a seriously tasty breakfast – Bun Bo Hue. This spicy noodle soup is usually made with beef and pig knuckles and is an absolute must-try while in Hue. Then, meet with a local chef and explore a bustling local market where you will taste and smell all the wonderful herbs and ingredients that bring local dishes to life, while learning more about the culture of Vietnamese cuisine along the way. Stop for lunch and enjoy some of Hue’s most celebrated dishes. Continue to the local chef’s delightful home where you will learn how to cook up some simple and delicious dishes using the fresh ingredients you picked up at the market. Take your new knowledge and local recipes back home with you so you can recreate meals that will take you straight back to Vietnam. Later in the afternoon, take a visit to the Thien Mu Pagoda, the unofficial symbol of Hue. The Pagoda is an active Buddhist monastery that dates back to 1601. You will also visit the elaborate royal tomb of Emperor Tu Duc, with its beautiful lake, frangipani and pine trees, and the Imperial Citadel.

Fly from Hue to Hanoi today. Your departure will mostly likely be in the morning but can vary a little depending on flight schedules. Settle in on arrival, then your leader will guide you through the ancient 36 Streets to discover a varied selection of shop-lined alleys that sell everything from souvenirs to exquisite silk clothing, jewellery and embroidered tablecloths. In the afternoon, you will be treated to a traditional Hat Xam performance – this is truly an experience like no other. Hat Xam is an artform of Northern Vietnam dating back to the Tran Dynasty. Originally, this was performed by blind performers, and was enjoyed by local working-class audiences, right up until the late 1950s, when a wave of communism deemed all art forms to be corrupting influences. Today, this style of performance occurs rarely, but you and your group will be taken to a private club house for an exclusive performance; one of the few places where such artists still perform acoustically. The performance includes some story telling aspects and possibly interaction with guests, so be ready to get involved!

  • Le Jardin Hotel Haute Couture Hanoi or similar (1 night)
  • Hanoi - Old Quarter Tour
  • Hanoi - Hat Xam performance

Enjoy a guided half-day tour of Hanoi with your leader, gaining insights to the city’s history during visits to the Temple of Literature, One Pillar Pagoda and the former residence of Vietnam’s most famous revolutionary, Ho Chi Minh. Enjoy a delicious lunch at KOTO restaurant – an Intrepid Foundation supported program that teaches disadvantaged youth hospitality skills. Enjoy a free afternoon for further explorations. The Vietnam Fine Arts museum is well worth a visit, and walking is a great way to explore the city and its many lakes and parks. You'll see that this enchanting northern capital can be quieter than its southern counterpart, and the West Lake, north of the main city, is an ideal place to interact with the locals and relax by its banks.

  • Hanoi - Temple of Literature
  • Hanoi - One Pillar Pagoda & HCM stilt house
  • Hanoi - KOTO lunch
  • Hanoi - Fine Arts Museum - VND30000

Today you will drive to Halong Bay – this World Heritage listed wonder is undoubtedly one of the world’s most spectacular sights. There’s no better way to appreciate the bay’s beauty than on board a junk-style boat – your Feature Stay accommodation for the evening. Carefully designed with traditional touches and modern amenities, you can sit back in complete comfort as you weave through stunning limestone islands, karsts and caves. Stop by Surprise Cave to discover its interesting rock formations with you leader, then retire to the boat for a marvellous seafood lunch. During the warmer months your leader will discuss the option for swimming from Ti Top Island. There is also the option for kayaking to get up close to the towering limestone karsts. This evening’s dinner is sure to be a standout – dine on the deck of the boat by candlelight and watch the sun go down over the magnificent landscape.

  • Secret Halong Cruise (Feature Stay) or similar (1 night)
  • Halong Bay - Overnight Boat Cruise
  • Halong Bay - Kayaking Tour - VND250000

Today’s total travel time is approximately 3 hours. Your main luggage can be left in the hotel in Hanoi. Surprise Cave is accessed via staircases but the pathways inside can be a little uneven and slippery, so good walking shoes or sandals will be useful.

Swimming in the bay from the boats is banned. Kayaking is restricted to designated zones within the bay.

Your wooden junk-style boat has twin-share cabins with en suite facilities and air-conditioning. Due to the limited cabins on board, the single supplement is excluded, and accommodation will be on a twin-share basis.

Local authorities only permit a limited number of boats to stay overnight in Halong Bay. To ensure all travellers can be accommodated on board available boats, on occasion you will stay on a larger boat (with up to 12 cabins) and share your boat with another group. Or, your group may be split across different vessels, in which case a group leader will be present on each boat, and the route taken and inclusions on board will remain the same. In order to arrange the best possible boat, the overnight on Halong Bay may be moved 1 day prior due to availability. If this is the case, the Hanoi touring will be done the day after the Halong Bay overnight cruise.

In the morning, enjoy breakfast on board the boat and perhaps take part in some optional Tai Chi to start off the day. Sail back to the port, disembark and travel back to Hanoi. Arriving back in the capital, enjoy some time to wander around and enjoy some of the city’s attractions you may have missed the first time. You can shop on Hang Gai Street or perhaps enjoy some afternoon tea at the Metropole Hotel. The best times in the year to visit Vietnam

Pick the right time for your visit to Vietnam with this seasonal guide © golero / Getty Images

Vietnam serves up a generous dose of Southeast Asian magic at any time of year, but some seasons are easier for travelers than others.

A lot depends on what you are looking for from your trip – if it's time on the beach on the central coast, you probably want to stick to the drier months from February to June, before the peak summer crowds arrive; if you're here to go trekking in the highlands, October to March is the optimum season.

It's important to be aware that the weather can vary widely as you travel around Vietnam. The country spans 1650km (1025 miles) from north to south, taking in tall mountains in the north and flat, tropical wetlands in the Mekong Delta . In the north, it can be positively chilly in winter; from December to February, the highlands around Sapa can see snow while the Delta basks at 25°C (77°F).

To help you plan a perfect trip, here's our guide on the best times to visit Vietnam.

A woman sits on a swing connected to a palm tree on a beautiful beach

July and August are the top months for beach lovers

The hot, sticky high season from July to August is the busiest time of year to visit Vietnam, coinciding with favorable beach weather on the central coast. Demand for flights soars, and prices for accommodations can increase by as much as 50% in resort areas such as Danang and Nha Trang . Book flights and hotels well in advance and expect crowds on the sand at all the popular resorts.

The rest of the country is warm and humid, and sunny days are punctuated by spectacular summer monsoon downpours and even the odd typhoon on the coast. This is a poor time of year for visiting the north, as trekking trails turn into quagmires, and Hanoi and Halong Bay are drenched by heavy showers. On the festival calendar, Trung Nguyen (Wandering Souls Day, also known as Vu Lan) in August sees huge spreads of food left out for the spirits.

December to March is the season to visit Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC)

Winter in Vietnam tends to be drier and cooler than the sticky summer, and the weather can be downright chilly in the north, particularly at higher elevations. However, this is the perfect time to explore Vietnam's characterful northern and southern capitals, with manageable temperatures and low humidity taking the sting out of exploring Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) on foot.

If you want to see more of the country, this is also a great time to head out to the Mekong Delta and the island of Phu Quoc , with warm (not scorching) temperatures and clear skies. As April approaches, however, the mercury starts to climb to uncomfortable levels down south.

Another obstacle to easy travel is the Tet festival – officially, Tet Nguyen Dan – marking the Vietnamese lunar New Year, in late January or early February. The whole country is on the move and prices for transport and hotels shoot skywards.

In December, the biennial Flower Festival brings fragrant blooms, pageants, wine and music to Dalat , while Buon Ma Thuot's annual coffee festival in March attracts lovers of a good brew. Christmas Day – known in Vietnam as Le Giang Sinh – is a big deal for the Catholic community in Ho Chi Minh City.

Visit from April to June and September to November to avoid the crowds

The low season in Vietnam coincides with the transition from the cool, dry winter to the hot, humid summer and vice versa. From April to June and from September to November, the weather is often unsettled but rarely extreme. You may get days of glorious sunshine, but there will also be days of rain, so pack for both dry and wet weather.

These transition periods are good times to avoid crowds at the sights, save money and explore the whole country, as the weather is not notably awful anywhere. The October to November window is particularly favorable for exploring the islands and outcrops around Halong Bay (and its calmer and less commercial neighbor, Bai Tu Long Bay ), with more dry days than wet days and mild temperatures.

There are some good festivals too. Held in Hue in April, May or June, the biennial Hue Festival fills the city's historic citadel with color, music and lights, while the Nha Trang Sea Festival brings a similar party mood to Nha Trang every second June. Vietnamese Buddhists celebrate the life of the Buddha with extravagant street processions in May for Phat Dan – best experienced in Ninh Binh or Ho Chi Minh City. Pyrotechnics enthusiasts of all kinds gather in Danang in June (or sometimes July) for the explosive Danang Fireworks Festival.

In the pre-winter season, aim to be in Hanoi on September 2, as Vietnam National Day brings energetic rallies and fireworks to Ba Dinh Square and boat races to Hoan Kiem Lake . Tasty festival foods appear everywhere for Trung Thu, the Mid-Autumn Festival, in September or October, while dragon boats race on the waterways of the Mekong Delta for the Khmer Ok Om Bok Festival in October or November.

Visiting Vietnam during the typhoon season

Technically, the typhoon season in the Northwest Pacific runs from May to November, but in Vietnam, the biggest risk of storms is from August to September. The country sees four to six typhoons in an average year, marked by heavy rain and strong winds. Occasional severe storms lead to flooding and disruption to transport, particularly by air and sea.

The areas most affected by typhoons are the southern coast and the far north coast (including Halong Bay). The weather tends to be most severe near the shore – inland, you may just get heavy rain and the odd power cut. This is a time to be cautious but not paranoid – monitor weather reports and prioritize land-based activities over boat trips, beaches, and diving.

Overview of Vietnam Weather in August

  • 5 Days Northern Vietnam Adventure
  • Journey through Wonders of Central Vietnam in 6 Days
  • Discover the Central Vietnam Highlands in 7 Days
  • Family Vacation to Vietnam’s renowned beaches in 11 days

Although it’s the first month of autumn, Vietnam in August is still extremely hot. Of course, it’s cooler than in July, but the average temperature in August is still quite high, at around 32°C. There are showers throughout the country, but they only make the weather more comfortable for a few days, after which it becomes even hotter.

On the other hand, Vietnam is a long country, and it’s not surprising that the weather is different in the three regions. Take a look at the weather details for each region below:

In the North: Autumn is coming step by step

The North of Vietnam welcomes autumn in August. Although it’s very hot, it’s still the most romantic time of the year that you shouldn’t miss. There is a huge difference in the temperature at this time. It can reach 37°C at the beginning of August and drop to 25°C by the end of the month. Additionally, daytime and nighttime temperatures are also different, it’s a bit cool at night while it’s hot during the day.

The northern part of Vietnam doesn’t have much rain in August, but when the rain comes, it becomes heavy showers that can soak many streets and cause severe flooding in mountainous areas. Aside from the rain, August is actually an ideal time to enjoy beautiful landscapes and take photos. The mountains offer more trekking opportunities, and the terraced rice fields begin to change from green to golden.

In the Central: End of the dry season

August is a good time to visit Central Vietnam as it is the end of the dry season. Generally, it is sunny with temperatures ranging from 30°C to 35°C. However, the end of August marks the beginning of the rainy season and cloudy weather. Fortunately, these showers disappear as quickly as they arrived, leaving the sky clear and bright again. Moreover, the cities in the central region closer to the south of Vietnam (Da Lat, some of the Central Highlands) will be more humid than other regions.

In the South: Halfway through the monsoon season

This month is only halfway through the 5-month monsoon season in southern Vietnam. Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) and the Mekong Delta are inundated with almost daily showers. These showers usually occur in the afternoon, and you can still expect many sunny and dry hours. The average temperature in August is around 27°C (80°F), but highs can still regularly climb to 37°C.

Regional climate in August

Popular destinations: Hanoi, Halong Bay, Cat Ba, Sapa , Ha Giang, Mu Cang Chai, Ninh Binh, Mai Chau, etc.

As remaining in the summer mode at the average temperature of 30 o C, the North of the country still expects plenty of hot weather, but with rain and at times storms as well. August is one of the wettest months of the year in Hanoi , so the city and surrounding are subject to the force of heavy rains and storms. For Halong Bay, the area can also receive the brunt of the monsoon which may bring gloomy weather and cruise cancellation can unexpectedly happen due to tropical storms and typhoons. Treks are not recommended in the mountainous regions due to the fairly slippery condition. However, the rice terraces start to turn from green to gold in the month of August and it is ideal for beautiful scenery and photography.

Popular destinations: Hoian, Danang, Hue, Nha Trang, Quy Nhon, Dalat, etc.

The weather in Vietnam in August is still extremely beautiful for beach trips

August keeps the beaches of Hoian, Danang, Nha Trang as the hot pick throughout the country thanks to good weather. Temperatures remain high at 30 o C on average along with dry weather. Rains will more frequently occur when it towards the end of month. Although the rainfall in Hue starts higher, this is still good choice for visiting in this month. The cities closer to the South Vietnam, such as Dalat and some of Central Highlands will be wetter than other areas in the region but it keeps the milder temperature.

Popular destinations: Ho Chi Minh City, Phan Thiet & Mui Ne, Mekong Delta, Long Hai & Ho Tram, Con Dao & Phu Quoc, etc.

Despite of wet season in the South, you can still expect plenty of dry and bright daylight hours with the temperature at 29 o C on average. The showers are slightly heavier than in previous months but help to keep the heat down, though the humidity is normally high all year round. For wildlife lovers, Con Dao island is great place to spot green turtle hatchlings as they make their way to the ocean.

August is the end of the summer holiday season and the start of autumn so its weather will be cooler. Although storms are beginning to appear, it still cannot stop the footsteps of many visitors because August will help you to save energy for your trip because of cool weather.

North of Vietnam, including Hanoi and Halong Bay can still be in your consideration list as your experience might remain perfect if you are lucky on the nice weather.

Ninh Binh also boasts golden rice terraces, though we’d recommend visiting in September which is more attractive. The same beautiful scenery are probably in some other rice terraces of the country.

Keeping the top draw in August is the beaches and cities of Central Vietnam due to their uniquely sunny weather. You can hit dynamic Danang for its sensational cuisine and nightlife, then marvel at the Imperial Citadel and other historic sites of Hue before spending the beach time at Nha Trang, Quy Nhon, or the golden sands of An Bang as well as the graceful architecture and heritage of Hoian.

As featuring mixed weather of hot & wet condition, your preparation for travel in August keeps named summer things with light clothes, sunhat, sunglasses, sunscreen with some more layers for early morning or late night at mountainous areas (if included in your itinerary) as well as raingear such as umbrella / parasol / raincoat…. Remember to bring insect repellent as mosquitoes are still much around.

In early of August, domestic travel is still at a peak as Vietnamese families take last minute chance of their summer vacation before the kids return to school. Therefore, please be prepared for crowded beaches, especially at the weekends. From the second half of August until end of month, it is a good time to visit if you want to avoid crowds of other tourists.
