Ycone La Confluence Residential Tower / Ateliers Jean Nouvel - Windows, Waterfront, Cityscape

Text description provided by the architects. The Confluence is an emblematic urban hub that will become historic, representative as it is of the 2000s and 2010s. The word ‘confluence’ suggests meeting, convergence. In this part of Lyon , there’s the meeting of many different individuals and social actors and the convergence of a great number of styles. It’s been a pleasure to be involved in such a cultural hotbed and the whole process of liberating renewal, where every project needs to find its place. Ycone will be bordered by pre-existing buildings in an urban development that will be part of a world to come. So it was important to see what could happen: we’re not making sense for today, but for a programmed future – with all the risks that that implies: in urbanism, things that are programmed can vanish without a trace from one day to the next.

Ycone La Confluence Residential Tower / Ateliers Jean Nouvel - Waterfront, Cityscape

Ycone is a program with a lot of mixed-use space. We’re providing apartments, but those apartments are not automatically destined for the same people, people from the same social category or with the same aspirations. Ycone will also accommodate retail outlets. The project will be faced with office blocks and sit alongside a railway. Its scale is slightly bigger than average, too. But Ycone isn’t aiming to be a city ‘monument’: this building will be part of the life of the new precinct and needs to have its own identity.

Ycone La Confluence Residential Tower / Ateliers Jean Nouvel - Image 17 of 42

Ycone is surrounded by three projects and its place is predetermined. I tried to turn the building around a bit, to push it to one side, then push it to the other side, to work out how I could set off a positive conversation with the neighbouring buildings. But that discussion was based on two conditions: urbanity and amenity. by creating a sort of green filter that will allow the people who live here to feel good, to feel at home, to not be unaware of the neighbours and even to offer them a gift. The filter will also allow the building to be identified as a slightly quieter place than its neighbours and allow us to introduce a public space around the building, which will be at the centre of that space – even if this is a micro public space, offering different levels. The building, then, is anchored to a base, on a terraced garden. We’ll even use this to tuck away visitors’ cars, hopefully discreetly and elegantly. The position was the first challenge. The worst response would have been to design a building like every other building produced by an automatic urban system – like the ones we see most of the time, sadly, in today’s non-cities.

Ycone La Confluence Residential Tower / Ateliers Jean Nouvel - Cityscape, Windows, Facade

The landscape speaks volumes, whether it’s close-up or in the background. First, there are the different horizons, the line of the mountains, the undulating relief. There are railway tracks and trains. I love the poetry of the railway and I think its pungency will only intensify and be more and more freighted with nostalgia over the coming decades. We need to preserve the distant landscapes, and several apartments will be able to enjoy them; and we need to preserve the close-up landscapes too, along with an awareness of being part of a city that’s in the process of being built.

Ycone La Confluence Residential Tower / Ateliers Jean Nouvel - Cityscape, Facade

Thanks to a second façade that’s very light and only partial, Ycone plays down similarities and creates differences – in light, feel, and of course, planes – even if the differences are slight; above all, it plays on differentiation, at the level of each objective element. Because the orientations are different, the four façades are not the same. When you cover all bases like this, normally, things improve. But you have to really express these differences.

Ycone La Confluence Residential Tower / Ateliers Jean Nouvel - Image 21 of 42

Ycone signals that there are two buildings in one. The project offers low-level apartments more height and allows for the possibility of two apartments being sold together – something that sometimes happens – even if they’re not in the same category. What we want to ensure is that the typologies always raise questions to which there are no answers. The architect needs to create something akin to a film script, a sort of fiction that might make sense to those who live there. There’s nothing worse than finding yourself back at square one with an artefact that raises no questions at all.

Ycone La Confluence Residential Tower / Ateliers Jean Nouvel - Windows, Facade

Façades are designed over two planes and work on what happens between the two. This gap will be a living space, an in-between area, what the Japanese call ma. People are going to live there, have their breakfast there, have dinner, walkthrough, put in potplants... The two façade planes will superimpose two compositions that then form one slightly deeper composition. This can be read as unstable, but obviously, it’s not. The result is tied to a certain number of constraints. You’ll try to frame things from the inside, try to shield yourself from certain things. The result, seen from outside, will depend on the set of constraints that get revised, adjusted, and embellished if possible by the story that’s brought us here, and we’ll try to take that story a bit further to make it more perceptible.

La Confluence, Lyon’s architectural showcase

La Confluence, Lyon’s architectural showcase

Where the Saône and Rhone rivers meet, the La Confluence neighbourhood has become a place of urban experimentation, combining constructional daring with a commitment to sustainability. The former brownfield is witnessing the development of the 21st-century city, which is being invented by way of cultural venues and soft mobility.

It was one of the city’s last remaining industrial areas. Beyond the arches of Perrache train station, the district known by Lyon residents as “derrière les voûtes” (“behind the arches”) had been dying since the 1980s. It was the end of an era for the railway shops, warehouses, abattoirs, prison, wholesale market and postal sorting centre in this working-class neighbourhood brought down by modernity and access problems. In 1995, the city officials decided to make it Lyon’s new showcase through refurbishments and new builds. (Almost) thirty years later, the 150 hectares to the south of the Presqu’île offer a new face.

Kengo Kuma, Nouvel, de Portzamparc, and more

The first phase of the project (2003-2018) focused on the western half of the Presqu’île, between the Cours Charlemagne and the Saône, from Perrache to the southern tip. It is here, at the exact point where the Saône and Rhone rivers meet, that the Musée des Confluences’ vast deconstructivist building (40 metres high, 6,000 tons of steel) has stood since 2014. Created by the Coop Himmelb(l)au agency, the building dedicated to the “remarkable story of humanity” and its people has become the star of La Confluence.

Yet, the heart of the neighbourhood lies elsewhere: around Place Nautique, a basin dug at the edge of the Saône and surrounded by designer buildings. To make La Confluence shine, the approach has been to bring on board the heavyweights of architecture, standard bearers of the spirit of innovation trumpeted by backers. Near the Confluence shopping centre, the massive rectangular headquarters of the Hôtel de Région (2011) was designed by Christian de Portzamparc and the Tour Ycone (2019) by Jean Nouvel, while the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma made the astonishing Hikari the first positive-energy city block.

From one bank to another

The banks of the Saône best embody this creative drive. The most daring buildings line the pedestrian Quai Rambaud: the refurbished former harbour master’s office, the orange cube of Les Salins and Euronews’ apple green “box” (both by Jakob + MacFarlane), the Customs House refurbished by Jean-Michel Wilmotte, Rudy Ricciotti’s undulating Pavillon 52, and Odile Decq’s sombre Dark Point . Bars, lounge restaurants and cafe barges attract walkers and cyclists. Unmissable cultural venues, La Sucrière and its sun-soaked rooftop bar, Le Sucre, organise exhibitions, festivals and concerts all year round .

You will have to wait until 2025-2030 to see the whole neighbourhood completed. Launched in 2012, phase 2 aims to rehabilitate the eastern half of the Presqu’île on the Rhone side, where the wholesale market used to be held. Projects are following in swift succession: the former Saint-Paul prison has been restored to accommodate the Catholic University of Lyon, Strate design school has moved into an Odile Decq building, while the Ydeal development has sprung up.

Sustainable architecture and mobility

Mixing accommodation, offices and shops, Ydeal’s five buildings (2020, Clément Vergély and Diener & Diener) illustrate La Confluence’s sustainability ambitions. One of them has received a rammed earth façade, a local material with hygrothermal properties. Another has been designed according to the reversibility principle: the offices can be turned into accommodation and vice versa, depending on how the area develops. The roofs are equipped with 850 m² of solar panels, while a communal courtyard garden is home to a vegetable garden and compost bins.

  • pays : France
  • aeroport plus proche : Lyon-Saint Exupéry

To connect La Confluence’s islands, priority has been given to soft mobility. The tramway passes through the neighbourhood. It is crisscrossed by ten kilometres of cycle lanes. An electric shuttle runs along Quai Rambaud… La Confluence has gone from industrial to experiential.

  • Ateliers Jean Nouvel

Jean Nouvel, an architect with an international reputation, has designed the new Ycone tower in Lyon's "La Confluence" district. Inaugurated on March 7 th 2019, it is a building of great diversity (92 apartments including 27 social housing units as well as stores) that resonates perfectly with the word "confluence" meaning meeting and mixing. A building in the spirit of its time but also a place to live in the future.

ThermoSystem 68 Windows and ConceptPatio 68 Sliding & Folding - Residental/Project Tour Ycone located in Lyon, France

Jean Nouvel has allowed Ycone to find its place in the middle of existing multi-style buildings, while developing features that allow it to offer a comfortable lifestyle to all its users. This is true regardless of the apartment, the floor or the urban planning developments to come in the neighbourhood. It is in this sense that the large sliding doors CP 130, CP 68 and TS 68 windows from Reynaers Aluminium have been installed in this 14-storey tower.

CP 130 system:

36 dB Sound attenuation

5 BREEAM credits in the building's thermal performance and light supply criteria

50% minimum recycled material and lower environmental impact

An opening and a wide field of vision on the outside

Many housing programs today are looking for high acoustic comfort, outdoor surfaces in loggia or terrace, with maximum openings. This was the case with the Ycone tower, which, because of its location in the immediate vicinity of the railways and not far from the Autoroute du Soleil, also required special acoustic treatment. The architect Jean Nouvel first imagined a double skin facade (two superimposed planes). Then, opted for high-performance corner sliders in terms of sound attenuation: the Reynaers Aluminium CP 130 system in corner version, which allows you to enjoy outdoor spaces and let in as much light as possible while protecting against noise.

ThermoSystem 68 Windows and ConceptPatio 68 Sliding & Folding - Residental/Project Tour Ycone located in Lyon, France

"Opening a large corner window creates a striking feeling of space and a wide uninterrupted view through window frames," explains Thomas Faustini, Key Account Manager at Reynaers Aluminium. This configuration adds a lot of cachet to a home. In addition, the large, slender handles offer both a contemporary look and a very simple and effortless use for the inhabitants." The angled windows provide more light in the rooms and allow you to enjoy the view of the city. Together with the CP 130 system, they also guarantee high acoustic comfort.”

Homes where it is good to live and where everyone feels at home

Jean Nouvel wanted to create comfortable places where people want to stay. Dwellings where you are not subject to the view of your neighbours and where privacy is protected. To this end, he sought the best ways to stay out of the gaze of the other without it representing a nuisance. "A comfort of life in which Reynaers Aluminium participates thanks to its CP 130 sliding doors," explains Thomas Faustini. This system allows to open large windows, with leaves of 2.60 m wide and 2.70 m high up to 300 kg, it can also reach 36 dB of acoustic attenuation. It also provides multiple configurations (from monorail to eight rails, galandage and angle).

Reynaers Aluminium's CP 130 system provides high-performance air, water and wind tightness for a sliding system: A*4 E*8A V*C3 and its thermal performance can reach a Uw of 1.3 W/m².K.

ThermoSystem 68 Windows and ConceptPatio 68 Sliding & Folding - Residental/Project Tour Ycone located in Lyon, France

Another advantage is that CP 130 has an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD®): a standardised, registered and independently verified document that provides transparent and comparable information on the environmental impact of products over their life cycle (in accordance with ISO 14025). This EPD® form certifies the use of a minimum rate of recycled material by about 50%.

Tour Ycone - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Madonna Talks Life on Tour With Her Kids: “Nothing Brings Me More Happiness”

Madonna and three children.

Madonna has been clear from the beginning that The Celebration Tour is no mere “greatest hits” circuit. It’s more like an artist’s MoMA retrospective blown up into an arena tour showcasing her singular contributions to the culture. It’s also the Queen of Pop’s most deeply personal tour yet, paying tribute to her influences, mentors, parents, and the friends and collaborators she’s lost. Nowhere is that personal touch more apparent than the inclusion of four of her children in the show. Across 78 performances so far, Madonna has worked double-duty as mom with son David and daughters Mercy, Stella, and Estere along for the ride—each one getting their own moment on stage. Mercy accompanies her mother on piano during “Bad Girl,” while David duets with his mom on “Mother and Father” (which, apparently, required the young musician to work up a bit of confidence to do). Twins Stella and Estere meanwhile, show off their dance skills during “Don’t Tell Me” and a segment dedicated to ballroom.

Ahead of her final arena dates in Mexico and a historic (potentially record-breaking) free show in Rio de Janeiro, Madonna sat down to answer questions over e-mail about life on the road with her children.

Rocco performed on stage during MDNA , and Lola worked in the wardrobe department on that same tour. Your children always seem to be involved in some capacity with your work. How does that feel as a mother?

I have always been blessed with children who are interested in music, dance, and art. Starting from the top with Lola , who was not only an incredible ballet dancer and and a rhythmic gymnast, switching to musical theater and contemporary dance. Now she is a unique singer and song writer in her own right. When I go on tour, nothing brings me more happiness to know, we are all working on the same show creating the magic together. It would be boring if they were just traveling from hotel to hotel, and occasionally coming to watch the show.  Of course, I am also their mother so sometimes we get on each other’s nerves. We are a family of artists but are also a family and that’s what happens.

It seems like your children have been honing their talents for years. How important is it for you as a mother to make sure they take their art seriously?

Because The Celebration Tour is a retrospective of my life, I thought it made perfect sense to include all of my children still living with me in the show. As they all dance, and play musical instruments, and have been doing so for years.  David has played guitar since he was a child.  Mercy has played piano since she was eight and has been classically trained most of her life. Eventually, when I adopted the twins, they started to play piano and dance as well.  There is always an endless parade of music and dance teachers coming and going in our house. And then we add to that Djing as Estere showed a keen interest in learning. She started taking DJ lessons and took it very seriously.

Madonna with Mercy

Each of the children has their own moment in the show. Mercy James playing piano during “Bad Girl” was a highlight. Any back story on how that all came together?

I saw a strange poetic juxtaposition of hedonism, erotic exploration emerging into the light of Mercy, sitting stoically at her grand piano playing Chopin as she beckoned me towards her, making me think about the choices I have made in my life.  Singing “Bad Girl” was kind of a confession, not an apology, and I felt we had an unspoken understanding of what was happening.

Stella performs in “Don’t Tell Me,” which is a big number during the show. How was she with learning the choreography?

Stella, who I would say is my shyest child, comes alive on stage, and I love having her as my little cowgirl. But she happens to be an incredible fine artist, and I’m hoping that she follows in the footsteps of Rocco who after being a B-boy, skater, and graffiti artist has really come into his own as an incredible painter.

David during the show’s finale.

David singing a verse during “Mother and Father” was fantastic. Has he expressed any interest in following in your footsteps with a musical career? He had originally only played guitar at the beginning of the tour. Did it take some convincing to get him to sing?

“Mother and Father” is one of my favorite moments in the show because it gave me a chance to not only honor my mother and her memory but also to honor David’s mother and her memory. He has always wanted to sing and play guitar.  He loves being on stage. This is nothing new. I love that we both get to sing to our mothers. Much of the show is about motherhood, family, and the importance of that in my artistic life.

Estere

Estere

Estere, backstage in a “Britney Spears” t-shirt.

How did Estere get so into ballroom? Does she have any vogue mentors (aside from you)?

While Estere was learning how to DJ she became interested in ballroom competitions and just by luck, one of my choreographer’s assistants, Ivy Mugler, has her own ballroom house called House of Mugler.  She started taking Estere aside during rehearsals in another room, and within a couple of weeks she was doing death drops and spins and surprising us with her ability.  So, of course we had to turn that section of the show into Estere’s Ball.

Because this tour is a celebration of your entire career, did you kids learn or realize anything new about you?

I think what my children learned the most in this year of rehearsing and performing is that if you want to follow your dreams, you have to work hard for them.  And if all of them choose something different later in life, they will never forget this year of blood, sweat, and tears.

The tour just wrapped up its U.S. dates. With five shows in Mexico City coming up and the huge free concert in Rio, what’s going through your mind right now?

This show was created for an indoor arena. Transforming and adapting it to perform outdoors on the beach, with no roof in Rio is going to be quite an undertaking and full of surprises. God willing, we will pull it off, and it will be an experience they will never forget.

Madonna ended her sweet message by sharing what she thinks her children have taken away from the experience of taking the stage with her.

“I think what my children learned the most this year of rehearsing and performing is that if you [want] to follow your dreams, you have to work hard for them,” she said. “And if all of them choose something different later in life, they will never forget this year of blood, sweat, and tears. Nor will I.”

Madonna is taking a minute to honor her kids.

On Thursday, April 25, the singer, 65, shared a series of behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram of herself and her kids from the past few months after they joined her on stage during her Celebration Tour. In the first photo, Madonna is surrounded by three of her six kids — son David, 18 and twins Estere and Stella, 11 — as they engulf her in a group hug.

Other photos show David and Madonna playing guitar together, daughter Mercy, 18, getting a kiss on the cheek from one of her sisters, as well as scenes of all of them on stage with their mother.

"On the day before our 80th show of the Celebration Tour I need to acknowledge my incredibly talented children who carried me through this Journey each of them bringing their own unique talent to the stage," the proud mom began in her caption.

"They were also going to school and rehearsing every night. !! . am so very proud of all of them. I think what my children learned the most this year of rehearsing and performing is that if you who to follow your dreams, you have to work hard for them."

"And if all of them choose something different later in life, they will never forget this year of blood, sweat, and tears. Nor will I. ♥️ It’s a CELEBRATION," Madonna ended her caption.

In an interview with  W. Magazine earlier this week, the "Material Girl" singer spoke about her Celebration Tour , which concludes in the coming weeks with a few stops in South America.

"When I go on tour, nothing brings me more happiness than to know we are all working on the same show, creating the magic together," the proud mom said. "It would be boring if they were just traveling from hotel to hotel, and occasionally coming to watch the show."

"Of course, I am their mother so sometimes we get on each other's nerves. We are a family of artists but we are also a family, and that's what happens."

Madonna is mom to six kids — Lourdes, 27, Rocco, 23, David, Mercy, and twins Stella and Estere. Her son David and daughters Mercy, Stella and Estere joined her on stage for this tour.

Chinese woman posing for photo dies after fall from edge of crater on Indonesian volcano

A Chinese woman died after and falling off the edge of a crater while posing for a photo on an Indonesian volcano known for its popular “blue fire” phenomenon .

Huang Lihong, 31, and her husband Zhang Yong were in the East Java province on a guided tour when the incident took place. The duo, in their bid to watch the sunrise, had climbed to the edge of the crater of Ijen – a volcano tourism park in the region, reported Hongxing News.

According to the police, she plummeted from a height of 75m and died from the impact of her fall. The death has been marked as an accident, police officials said.

Initially, she was maintaining a safe distance of two to three metres away from the edge of the cliff while taking the photos, the tour guide said.

He added that he had warned the couple about the dangerous points.

However, Lihong then started moving backwards to take a photo closer to a tree for a backdrop of bare straggly branches, the guide said.

She accidentally stepped on her long and flowing clothing while walking backwards, causing her to fall off the cliff, according to reports.

It is not immediately clear if she was wearing a skirt or a dress.

The Ijen volcano is known for its “blue fire” caused by the blue light emitted from the combustion of sulfuric gases.

In 2018, scores of people were forced to evacuate their homes and at least 30 people were hospitalised after the volcano started to emit toxic gases.

Mount Ijen regularly releases small amounts of noxious gases but the site stays open to the public.

Indonesia is home to around 130 active volcanoes. Millions of Indonesians live and work near volcanoes, largely because of the fertile farming soil.

LIV Golf not going anywhere; “totally separate” from PGA Tour, PIF negotiations

Speaking ahead of LIV Golf’s Adelaide event in his native Australia, Greg Norman offered his perspective on the state of the game.

Share All sharing options for: LIV Golf not going anywhere; “totally separate” from PGA Tour, PIF negotiations

LIV Golf, Greg Norman

Since LIV Golf launched in the spring of 2022, golf has been in flux, with the game’s best players competing on two separate circuits.

Many other issues exist within this reality, too. Money, equity, and, given who LIV Golf’s beneficiary is, moral issues and geopolitical ramifications have all bled into the sport.

Nevertheless, in an attempt to rectify this, PGA Tour brass and the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) established a framework agreement on Jun. 6, 2023 , that not only shocked the sporting world but also set a pathway for the two sides to come together and re-establish a unified golf tour. Negotiations have occurred since then, but a finalized deal remains far away.

Yet, LIV Golf did not appear within that framework agreement then, and they do not have any influence on those negotiations now, according to LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman .

“I would love to give you insight, but I don’t have any. We at LIV are totally separate from that part of the negotiation,” Norman said in South Australia ahead of this week’s LIV Golf Adelaide event.

Greg Norman

“We at LIV are a standalone company being invested in by the same investor interested in the game of golf. Our investor wanted to invest in LIV because he loved the opportunity of the franchise model, what he could do with it, and how we could build it out on a global platform.”

Since last June, Norman has continued to champion LIV Golf’s cause, indicating on numerous occasions that its strength as a start-up league has never been stronger.

Nobody knows how LIV will look or how it will fit into professional golf’s new structure should the PGA Tour and the PIF strike a deal.

But Norman remains as confident in LIV Golf as he ever has. He said he received numerous compliments at Augusta National , where he lingered among the patrons at this year’s Masters Tournament . Norman said dozens of people approached him there and told him they love what he and LIV Golf have accomplished.

“The support, the recognition, the comments that were made, it was almost unanimous for three straight days walking around with people,” Norman said.

“To see it and to hear it and to hear the comments they made about what’s happening to the game of golf and the go that LIV has brought to the game of golf, it was very, very strong for me. It was a very powerful three days.”

LIV Golf

Norman, who envisioned a global golf tour in the mid-1990s, has seen that dream become a reality through LIV. He has helped bring golf to different places around the world often neglected by the PGA Tour and other major tours, such as Singapore, Thailand, and his native Australia.

In its first full year of operation last year, the event in Adelaide welcomed 77,000 fans, making it LIV’s most successful event of 2023. The “Watering Hole,” which has drawn comparisons to TPC Scottsdale’s famous par-3 16th , was a smashing success, too.

Over 100,000 spectators are expected at the South Australia tournament this week.

“This event here from last to this year is the benchmark for LIV,” Norman said.

“We get all the other events, 13 events around the world, to take a look at what we’ve delivered here, what Adelaide has delivered, what the state government has delivered, and what the local community and the region have delivered, and you go. It can be done.”

Norman’s focus remains on LIV, not on the negotiations between the PIF and the PGA Tour.

“I don’t know what’s going on over there,” Norman added.

“I really don’t want to know what’s going on over there because we are so fixated on growing and developing and building out what LIV is today and looking and doing our schedule for 2025 and going into 2026. Our responsibility is to look after our people, our players, and where we want to go.”

Prices start around $100, but can easily rise to four figures if you select one of the VIP packages available on Ticketmaster. And if you are interested in his single show in London, rest assured that it doesn’t cost much more than the U.S. concerts, with prices starting a little under the $150 mark.
