Explore a pristine tropical wilderness en route to the tip of Australia

About cape york.

Bordered by the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Coral Sea, Cape York Peninsula is an untouched wilderness dominated by mighty meandering rivers and vast flood plains. It’s the place where you can stand on the very tip of the Australian continent, discover the oldest rainforest in the world, and travel deep into wild frontier country.

Connected to New Guinea for much of the past 250,000 years, the repeated interchange of flora and fauna has bequeathed a rich biological legacy on Cape York Peninsula. Nowhere is this more evident than the Wenlock River, home to more freshwater fish species than any other river in Australia. You’ll also learn about the Cape’s incredible biological diversity at Piccaninny Plains, an AWC Sanctuary.

A trip to the tip: how to get to Cape York

31 October 2023

This article was created in partnership with apt tours.

18 October 2019 -->

Last updated . 31 October 2023

A trip through rugged outback country is the only way to reach our country’s northernmost point, the tip of Cape York , and Australia’s last frontier.

Cairns to the daintree.

A quest to the tippy top of Australia’s Tropical North is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.  The journey to Cape York begins in Cairns, heading north through the canefields to the ancient Daintree Rainforest. Stopping at Mossman Gorge in Daintree National Park, take the Ngadiku Dreamtime Gorge Walk with local Indigenous guides to learn the secrets of traditional hunting and gathering methods, and hear the sacred stories of the Dreamtime.

Cape Tribulation to Cooktown

Sealed roads are left behind as you hit the rugged Bloomfield Track, which starts at Cape Tribulation and carves its way through rainforest for 80 kilometres before cruising back onto bitumen for the last stretch to historic Cooktown.

Laura and the ancient Split Rock

Heading inland, at the tiny settlement of Laura, a visit to the Quinkan & Regional Cultural Centre provides context for a tour of the ancient rock art galleries of Split Rock, known for its distinctive figures of the Quinkan spirits believed to live in the sandstone, and listed by UNESCO as one of the top 10 rock art sites in the world.

The home stretch

From Laura, it’s unsealed roads all the way to ‘The Tip’. This epic journey is one that award-winning tourers, APT Tours, knows well. Specialists in reaching the hard-to-reach and seeing the unseen, they’ve been operating adventures off-road through Australia’s remote outback country for more than 50 years.

ATP 4WD Emmagen Creek

APT’s custom-built 4WD vehicles are made for this journey.

APT’s custom-built 4WD vehicles are capable of traversing some of the world’s roughest terrain, including the Kimberley, Kakadu, Lake Eyre, Central Australia, Karijini National Park in Western Australia, and the Victorian and New South Wales High Country – just a few of the many destinations APT travels to.

On a Cape York journey, each day brings something special. Visit the old gold mining town of Coen, stop at the Archer River roadhouse, see waterfalls and giant termite mounds and an array of stunning birdlife, and learn about the Aboriginal and European history of this fascinating and remote region.

Arriving at the tip, spend some time on beautiful Frangipani Beach. From Punsand Bay, it’s a short walk to the edge of the peninsula for a photo with the iconic sign that shows you’ve joined the ranks of those who ‘made it’.

Sign of Australia's northernmost point

A photo with the iconic sign of Australia’s northernmost point is a must.

Cooktown & Cape York with APT Tours

11 days / from $8245 per person twin share.

APT’s 11-day Cooktown & Cape York quest to the top of Australia’s Tropical North is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. The tour’s exclusive Signature Experiences means you’ll be granted access (by helicopter, no less) to the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve, a conservation area typically off limits to the public.

Take to the skies again on a scenic helicopter flight from Punsand Bay for  a different perspective of the tip of Cape York, and spend the last days of the tour exploring Thursday Island and Horn Island in the sparkling Torres Strait.

Aerial view of Punsand Bay

Take a scenic heli-flight over Punsand Bay for a different perspective of the Tip.

APT’s 4WD journeys are designed for small groups – no more than 22 guests – escorted by a knowledgeable driver-guide and tour director. They’re committed to working with local Aboriginal communities, and are the only major tour operator with an advanced ecotourism certification in the Outback for their commitment to environmental and sustainable practices.

Book the Cooktown & Cape York tour before December 15 and save $1500 per couple. Trips run from May to September and can be combined with a Great Barrier Reef cruise.

Our morning starts with a National Parks Ranger Guided Cave Tour. Delight in the spectacular caverns and passages decorated by stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones. Their formation began over 400 million years ago, with fluctuating groundwater slowly dissolving and sculpting the caves. Chillagoe was once an ancient Coral Reef that has been transformed into spectacular limestone bluffs with a network of some 560 caves, while early volcanic activity has created rich marble and mineral deposits.

Wander the town to see the Railway Station, Bank Vault, Court House, Police Museum, and Post Office. The tall chimney on the edge of the town is part of the former Ore Smelter. Nearby short walking tracks include Balancing Rock and two Aboriginal Rock Art Galleries.

As we arrive in Cooktown soak in views from Grassy Hill before spending the evening Dinner at the historic Lions Den Hotel. CAPE YORK TRIP ITINERARY – 10 DAYS TO THE TIP!!

Ten days from Cooktown to Cape York and back via Weipa and the Old Telegraph Track (OTT). A total of 2022km travelled and an EPIC TRIP!

CHEERS – JUSTIN & BEC

When we first hit the road getting to the tip was on our bucket list! It’s one of those locations that’s tarred with adventure! We’d heard all the stories of recoveries, breakdowns, fishing and campfire tales and we were pumped to create our own…. Now, your timing to get up to the Cape is imperative as it can only be done in the dry season from around April-November (depending on the rain). For us, we didn’t want to go in school holidays as it gets very busy and we hate crowded campsites so we hit Cooktown in early September to prepare for the tip.

$$ Firstly, I’ll start off with our budget stats for the trip. $$

Diesel – $542.57 and the most expensive at Jardine River Ferry @ $2 per Litre.

Food –  $350 along the way and we also cleared out our van before we left (about $150 worth of food). The supermarket at Bamaga is fantastic and has everything you’ll need. Groceries are expensive in this area of Australia and we also purchased our drinking water too.

Accomodation – $172 Elim Beach $20p/n – Weipa Caravan Park $35p/n x2 – Punsand Bay Campground $44p/n x2 – Moreton Telegraph Station $20p/n

Alcohol – $180 You definitely need a beer or ten every afternoon at the Cape. The Tavern at Bamaga has some good specials. But do remember there are restrictions on how much grog you can carry up this way.

OUR MAZDA BT-50 & SETUP

This is our Rig and how we have set it up!

OUR CAMP ITINERARY -10 NIGHTS

Cook town – elim beach – weipa – bertie creek – logans creek – roonga point – punsand bay – morton telegraph station – cooktown.

COOKTOWN We love this little town. Lots to see and do around the area and it’s the start of your adventure to Cape York. We parked up at the Cooktown Holiday Park. It’s a beautiful park with plenty of shade, large grassy sites and a resort style pool to cool off in.

A small but busy town that is a hub for travellers heading north and south. Cooktown is a great place to not only stock up for your adventures but it also has a lot to see! After parking our van at the BIG4 Cooktown Holiday Park we decided to lay low for a day and do a ton of washing. The amenities are fantastic, staff are beyond friendly and the park itself is a winner!

If your after some Top Notch Seafood while you’re here,  there is a great bloke in town who runs Nicko’s seafood! He does a seafood run every avo through the caravan park so look out for him and make sure you grab some prawns, they are Delicious!! Hit him up when your buying some prawns about leaving your caravan somewhere while you head to the tip!!

Only 30km away you will find, “The Lions Den Hotel”. One of North Queenslands most Iconic Pubs. It provided us a tasty beer while the kids played in the playground. What a pub this is! With it’s quirky memorabilia, a swimming hole out the back and wood fired pizzas to die for, it’s a Mecca for tourists!  It’s a must stop while in the area. With its history and licenced bar what’s not to love.

After a couple of nights preparing for our trip we put our van into storage & stock up on some last minute groceries and we’re ready to hit the road.

tours to the tip of australia

We’d highly recommend stopping at Elim Beach on your way up to the Tip. An absolutely magic spot & make sure you check out the coloured sands while your there.  The next day we do a big drive to Weipa, via the battlecamp road. Which was pretty much just a well maintained gravel road, but a great shortcut instead of driving back through Cooktown and Laura.

The road up to Weipa was excellent. It had just been graded and over half of it was bitumen. This place actually surprised us! A little tight knit township with just about everything you could need. Driving into the Weipa caravan park we didn’t expect grass. But you drive through the gates and it was as green as ever, so we found a spot to set our tent up with an ocean view. There is a cafe on site that do a mean pizza, a fantastic pool and a great atmosphere. It was a beaut place to relax so we decided to stay 2 nights. It’s also where you will find the last big shopping centre as you head north. There is a Woolworths, tackle shops, medical centre etc… There is places to pick up a few things as you head further north, but your better off stocking up while your in Weipa.

THE OLD TELEGRAPH TRACK

Woohooo, after leaving Weipa we are stoked to finally hit the Old Telegraph Track. We make a quick pit stop for some fuel and pics at the Bramwell Roadhouse and we’re off!!

The start of the track is pretty tame with just a single vehicle track cutting through the bush with a few washouts and rocky sections along the way. Once you hit Palm Creek, this is where the track really starts to get a bit gnarly. A steep entry and exit into the creek make things a bit tricky. If your towing a trailer, you will need to head to the right to find the chicken track or you will be winching up the exit!!l

tours to the tip of australia

FRUITBAT FALLS Our next pit stop was Fruit Bat Falls and an iconic part of the OTT.  The falls are located where the the OTT crosses the PDR(Peninsula Development Road) .A beautiful waterfall that cascades over a ledge into a shallow pool perfect for swimming. We were quick to jump in and have a slash around. The kids loved playing under the waterfall and it really was magic! It wasn’t crowded either so we had plenty of room to enjoy the beautiful refreshing water on a stinking hot day!

As you continue on the northern section of the Tele Track you will soon come across Elliot Falls. Another picturesque waterfall and pool that we admired. There is also a great National Park campsite here if you book ahead.

LOGANS CREEK

Our next stop was Logans Creek crossing, where you can sit and watch others attempt the water crossing before you of it yourself. We had a big day and decided to pull up and camp here for the night before finishing the track the next day.

tours to the tip of australia

ROONGA POINT What an epic spot this one was and we had it all to ourselves. Beautiful blue waters and great fishing. I managed to catch a few fish and we watched a stunning sunset. Roonga Point is in-between the Croc Tent and Punsand Bay Campground. When you stop in at the Croc Tent for a look, ask them for a mudmap with the campgrounds and tracks on it. It will only cost you a few dollars and well worth it.

An epic beach camp near the tip of Cape York. Easy to get to, great fishing and it’s a free camp!! So Good!

BAMAGA A great place to stock up, refuel, grab some more beers and do some grocery shopping. Be prepared to pay for expensive fuel here as well as all other items, which is fair enough in this remote part of Oz. The caravan park here is a great place to pull up and fishing off the jetty is a must.

tours to the tip of australia

PUNSAND BAY We were pretty excited to stop in here, get some washing done and have a swim in the (bore water) pool. We snagged a site right on the beach and had some amazing views. The restaurant do a fantastic meal and some of the best wood fired pizza’s we’ve had! We were even able to enjoy a few beers while the kids played with other families.

Punsand Bay Campground cost $44 per night and we stayed two as we did our trip to ‘The Tip’ from here.

THE TIP OF AUSTRALIA – PAJINKA

We made it to The Tip and it was a good feeling. Although it’s not  an overly difficult trek, it’s still a lot of km’s and a lot of corrugations to get there. We parked up at the bottom and as it was high tide we had to walk over some rocky outcrop to get to the tip. If you can get there on low tide, heading around the headland on the sand is a bit of a shortcut and it’s magnificent. The walk in was about 15 minutes and the kids all managed well.

THE WAY BACK Now once you have reached the TIP, the adventure isn’t over just yet!! There is still some great campsites to visit before you head back down.  Here’s a few things to check out before you head back down. SOMERSET BEACH – A great free camp 5 BEACHES DRIVE – A scenic coastal loop that takes you past 5 beaches and back to the PDR.  THE FRENCHMANS TRACK- Another challenging 4wd track that takes you to the east coast & Chiili Beach .  CHILLI BEACH – An amazing campground where rainforest meets the snow white sands of Chilli beach. We didn’t make it there as the winds were howling 70-80km an hour, not ideal for setting up a tent.

MORETON TELEGRAPH STATION Our last stop on our Cape York trek & this was such a welcoming visit. After all the red dirt we were very excited to pull into a lush green campground. We set up in a camp nestled amongst the bush and it was the perfect way to end out Cape York travels. Our final night here before heading back to Cooktown to pick up our van and continue down the East Coast.

FAVOURITE CAMPS –

BERTIE CREEK ON THE OTT AND ROONGA POINT BEACH CAMP JUST NEAR PUNSAND BAY.

HOT TIPS!!!

1. DON’T GET TO THE JARDINE RIVER FERRY AT LUNCHTIME.

2. DO THE WALK TO THE TIP AT LOW TIDE SO YOU CAN WALK AROUND THE BEACH.

3. TAKE YOUR TIME AND BE SAFE

4. TRY AND DO IT WHEN IT’S NOT BUSY. WE HAD A DREAM RUN UP HERE WITH THE TRACKS MAINLY TO OURSELVES – WE RECKON IT WOULD NOT BE AS ENJOYABLE WHEN THERE IS HEAPS OF TRAFFIC.

Doing the Trip to the TIP of Australia... - Cape York Peninsula

  • Cape York Peninsula

Doing the Trip to the TIP of Australia is a must do for everyone.

YES- the road through Cape York to the TIP of Australia is OPEN to tourist traffic-despite what the Main roads signs at Mt. Molloy and Lakeland say, they are planning to change them some day.How you rate the road conditions is an entirely personal matter-peoples tolerances and expectations vary-we rate it as great fun and standing on the TIP of Australia an achievement you will be proud of and remember forever. For further info on the roads you may refer to; www.cook.qld.gov.au/council/Roads/currentstatus.shtml

We took a 4 WD Safari with Wilderness Challenge from Cairns via the Telegraph Track up to Cape York. Our driver and guide Colin was terrific and ensured we had great fun and feed and looked after us well. We stayed each night in tents which we quickly learned to put up and it is the most relaxed yet exciting time I have ever had on a holiday. Would thoroughly recommend it.

tours to the tip of australia

For two people, the supplementary cost for the "accommodated" version of this tour of Cape York Peninsula works out at an average of USD230 per room per night for the 6 nights. You would expect a good standard of accommodation for this. But at Bramwell Station our room was so small you could hardly move, the mosqito netting was broken and the most uncomfortable beds and matresses belonged to a bygone shearing-gang era. After dark, the cane toads that assembled outside the entrance to shared facilities begrudgingly hopped out of the way - however, this merely added to the excitment of being in an outback location. Accomodation at Musgrave Telegraph Station was much better, but again no ensuite facilities. Pam's Place in Cooktown does not pretend to be much more than backpacker standard and advertises its rooms (this time with onsuite facilities) at only AUD 100 per night. We discovered too late that better standard of accommodation was available at both Bramwell Station and Cooktown. By contrast, at Seisia (2 nights) and Weipa (1 night) accommodation is excellent. At Seisia, if you are lucky enough, you may be allocated a fully-equipped cabin overlooking the beach. But there's no swimming at any of the beaches though on account of the ever-present crocodiles ( yes, you will probably get to see them in the wild). Our camping colleagues' tents were permanently arranged close to one another in clusters of 3 under common tarpaulins. The tour itself was good and our experienced sole driver/guide had an excellent knowledge of all the attractions in the area. Because she was on her own we needed to help her set up and prepare the meals ( fairly basic fare) and clean up afterwards. After arriving at Seisia via air and sea, the time aboard the vehicle is fairly long, although we did have frequent stops at points of interest. A seat rotation policy ensures that you are not confined to the back seats - on one or two occasions a rather painful location when travelling over rough terrain. It was only on the 7th day that, despite the varying attractions, our enjoyment began to falter. At Weipa, those who took the Weipa mine tour were not allowed off the tour bus to inspect the open cast mining operations. In fact they saw very little more of the bulldozers scraping up the bauxite than when we were first travelling into town. On balance, we could not recommend the accommodated version of this trip on account of the unnecessary inclusion of 2 nights of poor standard of accommodation and excessive accommodation cost.

We set off in 3 vehicles from Townsville to Cape York in the dry season of July. Each day we drove for 6 to 8 hours. The corrogated roads will get to you, if you don't slow down at times. scenery wise some of it was boring, but the river crossings made up for that. Be careful. We traveled up the 'Telegragh Track'. Right at the top is a large area of black boy ferns , a attractive area. There is a couple of places you can swim safely. When we finally got to the Cape, there is a good hotel can not remember its name, it was rather expensive from memory, but very comfortable after over a week sleeping in a swag. For those traveling around Australia, it would be a shame is you missed this area. From here you travel south to Wepia. This is were you can have a go at catching 'Jumping Sharks', quite exciting on a small rod.

Tour Itinerary: Cape York & Northern Islands

B,L,D: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

The first stop on the Cape York & Northern Islands is near the borders of NSW, SA and QLD, at the Dig Tree, where the explorers Burke and Wills famously set up camp. Learn more about this pioneering pair and their ill-fated expedition.

Continue to Birdsville, where sunset drinks are at Big Red, the first of 1,140 parallel sand dunes marking the edge of the Simpson Desert. Look out over the vast expanse of not very much, and you'll honestly know you've made it to the outback!

To end the day, stay and dine in one of Australia's most iconic pubs — the Birdsville Hotel.

Overnight : Birdsville Hotel

Fly further north towards the Gulf of Carpentaria arriving in Burketown, halfway between Cairns and Darwin. Burketown sits along the Savannah Way, a 3700 kilometre route linking the historic pearling town of Broome with tropical Cairns.

Afternoon touring with a local operator, see some sights of the area including the Burketown Bore, The Old Wharf, Albert River and the Escott Crossing Weir. Hear how the water systems are a major feature of Burketown and an important part of the traditional Gangalidda culture.

Overnight at the Savannah Lodge, a hidden gem amongst abundant tropical gardens - a peaceful oasis in outback Queensland.

Overnight : Savannah Lodge

Kick off with breakfast at Adels Grove before heading to Bremer Island, Arnhemland, in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Banubanu is an eco-sensitive beach retreat built in partnership with the Yolgnu people to ensure guests experience and appreciate the natural wonders and the culture of East Arnhemland in this tranquil location. With only six rooms, the whole retreat is reserved for your group. Beach Front Bungalows offer perfect barefoot luxury. Relax on your deck and watch the ocean, indulge in your outdoor shower and fall asleep to the sound of the waves.

2 nights : Banubanu Beach Retreat, Beach Front Bungalows

Today you will have the option to go fishing, canoeing, snorkelling or on an ATV tour. Migrating Pelagic like Spanish Mackerel and Tuna abound in the waters where the Gulf of Carpentaria meets the Arafura Sea.

Back at the lodge, savour a well-earned drink at sunset overlooking the water and enjoy the day's catch.

Continue west today to the Tiwi Islands with a detour via Darwin to hop on a smaller aircraft.

Tiwi Island Retreat is on the incredibly remote Bathurst Island, north of Darwin in the Timor Sea. Recently upgraded and expanded, the resort has a relaxed beach vibe and features oceanfront rooms and a wonderful pool deck with views over the ocean.

The afternoon is yours to relax, rejuvenate and soak it all in. Delicious seafood is a focus, with ocean-to-plate and locally sourced produce tempting your mouth to water.

2 nights : Tiwi Island Retreat, Ocean Front Room

Today is your chance to go offshore reef fishing on a half-day cruise. With an experienced skipper and all fishing equipment included, you'll visit some of the most remote, pristine fishing environments in the world, targeting a range of tropical species, including Barramundi, Blue Salmon, Black Jewfish, Golden Snapper, Mangrove Jack and many more.

Fly back east to Cape York, past the tip of Australia, and on to Horn Island in the Torres Strait.

Local history experts and tour guides Liberty and Vanessa will meet you on arrival. They'll take you to the Torres Strait Heritage Museum to view exhibits from the pearling industry, myths and legends of the Torres Strait, artwork, artefacts and the World War II history of the area. On the In Their Steps WWII tour, visit gun emplacements, an underground command post, slit trenches, an aircraft wreck with an unbelievable story, a WWII airstrip, dispersal bays and taxiways. Walk in the steps of the indigenous and non-indigenous soldiers who served in the area with insightful and entertaining commentary.

Transfer by ferry across to Thursday Island and your accommodation, shared with your fellow passengers.

2 nights : Island Villas (2 bedroom, 2 bathroom)

Today it's time for a bucket list adventure - a visit to the Tip of Australia. Fly by chopper over the region's 247 virtually untouched islands, spreading like stepping stones through the strikingly turquoise waters of the Arafura Sea. Land at Loyalty Beach, then bus to Frangipani Beach for a 500 metre walk over uneven ground to the tip of mainland Australia. Snap a photo for the memory vaults! Lunch is a picnic on the beach, then heli back to TI.

On return to the island, a tour of the island and Green Hill Fort reveals how its history helped to create today's dynamic, multicultural community and the tropical lifestyle it offers.

Ferry back to Horn Island to re-join your aircraft for the flight south to Lizard Island on the Great Barrier Reef. Take in the breathtaking coastline en-route and fly over some of the world’s most spectacular scenery on the reef.

As the most northern resort on the Great Barrier Reef, Lizard Island is truly secluded from the rest of the world. Exceptional service, facilities, touring and food are the perfect complement to swimming off the beach into the wonders of the largest coral reef in the world – very hard to beat.

2 nights : Lizard Island Resort

Enjoy a leisurely day relaxing in the island paradise that is Lizard Island, with activities at your discretion. Take advantage of the complimentary snorkelling equipment and lessons, stand up paddle boards and sea kayaks and it’ll be hard to stay out of the water. The local reef life will leave you spellbound.

If you’re feeling energetic, a walk to Cook’s Lookout, the highest point of the island with a 360° view, is well worth the effort.

Optional tours (at your own expense) include a boat trip to the outer reef.

Cooktown is your next destination, where Captain Cook sought refuge when his ship, The Endeavour, sustained severe damage during his 1770 expedition. Tour the many historical sites and learn how Cooktown prospered in a gold rush, dwindled, and then rose again to become an important base in World War II.

A sunset cruise makes for a wonderfully peaceful way to end the day. Nibble on a gourmet cheese platter, sip on a drink and listen to stories about Cooktown.

Overnight : Sovereign Resort Hotel

Fly to Laura for a tour of spectacular rock art. Quinkan Country contains a large and dramatic body of rock paintings. These galleries, at least 15,000 to 30,000 years old, are listed by UNESCO as being among the top 10 rock art sites in the world.

Fly over the vast Queensland countryside, arriving at Longreach in the late afternoon. Explore the historic homestead at Camden Park Station, enjoy the expansive view from the verandah, visit a circa 1920 shearing shed and gain an insight into the history of grazing in the outback. After dinner, witness a thrilling luminescent light show at the Qantas Founders Museum.

Luxury ensuite glamping at Mitchell Grass Retreat - with a private deck, air conditioning, indulgent king size bed and bath looking out over the plain, you may not want to leave!

2 nights : Mitchell Grass Retreat

Your day in Longreach begins at the fascinating Stockman's Hall of Fame, where the Australian Stockman's Experience will take you on an adventure that depicts the rugged, harsh and sometimes humorous antics of life in the bush.

Spend some more time at the Qantas Founders Museum — with an impressive collection of aircraft. Glide down the coolabah-lined Thomson River at sunset to Smithy's Outback Dinner & Show.

Next is Carnarvon Gorge, an oasis in the semi-arid heart of Central Queensland. Carnarvon Creek has carved a winding course through sandstone over millions of years to form a spectacular steep gorge with narrow, vibrantly coloured, lush canyons. Take a guided walk to Mickey's Creek, Warrumbah Gorge, and a narrow side gorge where you can touch both walls simultaneously.

At the front gate of the Carnarvon Gorge National Park, the lodge is set on 100ha, looped by Carnarvon Creek. Stylishly appointed cabins in the bush provide a remarkable base for touring into the gorge.

In the evening, cast your eyes upwards for a tour of the stars. The Carnarvon night sky is incredibly clear, allowing for some spectacular viewing.

2 nights : Carnarvon Gorge Wilderness Lodge

Take a long, guided walk. The Moss Garden, one of the best-known sites at Carnarvon Gorge, is an excellent example of how the spring systems work and is nestled amongst one of the best patches of remnant rainforest in the National Park.

If you choose not to do the full-day tour, you can spend more time this afternoon around the grounds or go on shorter walks around the resort. Sit on the private verandah of your cabin, drink in hand, and do a spot of wildlife watching.

Sadly, it's the last day of your Cape York & Northern Islands tour. The final stop will be Charlotte Plains, a 27,000- ha sheep station, or Lightning Ridge, to tour an underground opal mining camp. Back in the air, head for home to Melbourne, where you'll arrive at Moorabbin Airport around 6.45 pm.

Cape York Air Tours From Cooktown

  • Cape York breeds tough locals and a particular type of person lives in this remote outback unspoilt type of destination for a reason. They are warm friendly and keen for a yarn with visitors and they are tough so tough that they can withstand the dry season and the green season and it does not seem to bother them. They are free to live the way they like without society judging them and they can go hunting and fishing for their own survival without having to worry too much about local laws as there are no major shopping centres or grocery stores to provide packaged foods daily in this part of Australia. Everything comes into Cape York either by aircraft or by ship. Cape York is about 208,000 square kilometres and it is one of the only real wildernesses left in the world today.
  • Sir David Attenborough said this area also has the cleanest body of water in the world due to the lack of agricultural farming, industrial industries and lack of land clearing and degradation. Everything is in balance in Cape York and that goes with the population and number of people that rely on its natural resources. Cape York consists of low lying wetlands with amazing birdlife that migrate here annually and high rainforest clad mountainous regions which are home to pre-historic and rare wildlife. There are rivers which still hold gold and huge waterfalls, deserted white sandy beaches and low lying savannah country.
  • Flying to Cape York for a day you will see it all and more so come along and join us on the trip of a lifetime from Cooktown we would just love to show you our Australia.

Scenic Helicopter Flights Tip of Australia Scenic Flight

Tip of Australia Scenic Flight

Tip of australia scenic flight, departing horn or thursday island, the experience.

Departing from either Horn Island or Thursday Island, in the heart of the Torres Strait, take a stunning 40-minute scenic helicopter flight to the northernmost point of the Australian mainland, the iconic Tip of Australia.

Much of the regions 274 Islands are virtually untouched, spreading like stepping stones through the strikingly turquoise waters of the Arafura sea which separates Tropical North Queensland from the untamed jungles of Papua New Guinea.

From our unique aerial perspective view deserted white beaches, low lying wetlands, volcanic rainforest covered peaks and seasonal waterfalls that flow out to fringing reefs bathed in warm tropical waters that teem with wildlife.

Chance sightings include dugongs, dolphins, sea turtles, giant marlin and the largest reptile in the world, the Saltwater or Estuarine Crocodile, a ferocious and expert hunter that can reach 6m in length and weigh over 1000kg.  Between July-September keep an eye out for migrating humpback whales that visit from the northernmost fringes of the Great Barrier Reef that lie to the east.

In the late 19th century this region was a bustling pearling hub with hundreds of ships and divers based here – more than 600 Japanese divers are buried in Thursday Islands heritage-listed cemetery.

Your pilot will point out numerous landmarks including one of Australia’s oldest military fortifications, Green Hill Fort, built in 1891; two remaining pearl farms visible at Friday and Roko Islands; shipwrecks; an abandoned gold mine; World War II bunkers and gun placements plus a monument to Captain James Cook who landed here in 1770.

This visually spectacular and historically significant experience is a must do when visiting the Torres Strait or Northern Peninsula region.

Australia’s beautiful East Coast has been drawing travellers from all over the world for decades. The postcard white sand beaches, shimmering water, world-class surf, and laid-back Australian island ambience – this is an exciting way to spend 3 weeks on East Coast of Australia.

We also have this massive 3 weeks across Australia itinerary where you could include a visit to the West Coast.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE GOING TO THE EAST COAST OF AUSTRALIA

Before you go book anything, there are a few things you should be aware of about visiting Australia, specifically the East Coast. In this part of the itinerary, I will help you decide when to visit, how much to budget, how to get around, and other travel tips:

When is the best time to go to the East Coast of Australia

The best time to visit the East Coast of Australia is generally during spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) . These seasons offer pleasant weather with moderate temperatures, ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the coast.

The peak tourist season is during the Australian summer, from December to February . This period sees the warmest weather, perfect for beach activities, but it also brings larger crowds and higher prices.

Winter, from June to August, is cooler and less crowded . While it’s winter, the climate remains relatively mild, making it a good time for those who prefer a quieter experience.

The rainy season varies along the coast but is typically during the summer months, especially in the tropical regions of Queensland, where you might experience tropical showers and occasional cyclones.

Are 3 weeks enough for East Coast of Australia

If you put together a list of cities properly, 20 days on East Coast of Australia is plenty of time. You can easily visit 4-5 cities. Planning what mode of transportation to use will also play a big role in ensuring that you can maximise your time without wasting it on airport and transport terminals.

What to pack

This depends on which season you plan to visit and the activities you want to do. If you’re an experienced surfer, you probably want to bring your own board, but you can also rent at many places along the Sunshine Coast.

If you plan to hike, don’t forget to bring comfortable shoes . I also recommend you bring at least one jumper/pullover because the wind at night, especially along the coast, can still be chilly, even in summertime.

How to get around

Getting around the East Coast of Australia offers various options. The most affordable is often buses, providing extensive coverage at low costs . But they can be the slowest choice.

For speed and convenience, flying is ideal , especially for covering long distances quickly. Trains offer a scenic and comfortable journey, though they might not be the fastest.

Renting a car is ideal for flexibilit y and exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations. It allows you to travel at your own pace and access areas not served by public transport, making it a great choice for a comprehensive and personalized travel experience.

However, Australia is massive, even with just visiting the East Coast. This means that you must craft your travel itinerary carefully to avoid spending more time driving than exploring.

This 3 weeks on East Coast of Australia itinerary is perfect for renting a car though . You can pick up the vehicle in Melbourne and then take it all the way to Sydney (it’s a 9-hour drive, but you can also take a break in Canberra for a night and explore the capital city.

From Sydney, you can take the car to the Blue Mountains, and finally, your last leg of the trip, from Sydney all the way to The Whitsunday Islands. You can then drop it off there and fly from Whitsunday Coast Airport to Cairns.

Language and currency

The main language spoken in Australia is English . While English is predominant, the country’s multicultural population also means that languages like Mandarin, Italian, Arabic, Cantonese, and Greek are widely spoken within various communities.

The main currency in Australia is the Australian Dollar (AUD) . Tourists generally cannot pay with other currencies directly. Card payments are widely accepted and often more convenient than cash, especially in cities and tourist areas. Using cards also provide better exchange rates and security for international travelers, but don’t forget to have some local cash in hand for emergencies.

Average travel cost for East Coast of Australia

The cost of a vacation in Australia can really vary depending on your style and level of comfort. Visiting during the summer season, the prices skyrocket. On the other hand, the shoulder seasons can save you a great amount of money.

  • Affordable : B udget travellers can expect to spend around AUD 1,500-2,500 . This includes hostel stays, public transport, and mostly self-catered meals.
  • Midrange : For a more comfortable trip with midrange hotels, some dining out, and domestic flights or car rental, the cost can range from AUD 3,500-6,000 .
  • Luxury : Luxury travellers might spend AUD 8,000-15,000 or more . This includes staying in high-end hotels or resorts, dining at upscale restaurants, private tours, and possibly internal flights in business class.

These estimates cover accommodation, transport, meals, and some activities. Prices can vary based on the specific destinations within the East Coast, the season, and personal spending habits. Activities like diving, guided tours, and special experiences will add to the overall cost.

If you plan to do extreme activities such as sky diving, diving, surfing, and others, you should really make sure that you have travel insurance valid for Australia .

Australia has a strict visa policy. There are a limited number of countries that could visit Australia without a needed visa.

If your passport is from the US, Canada, the UK, the EU, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan, you can enter and travel around Australia for up to 6 months, depending on what passport you hold.

However, all visa-free countries are still required to get an eVisitor permit , which you can obtain online. Make sure to get this at least one or two weeks prior to your departure date to Australia.

New Zealand citizens have a freedom of movement in Australia.

Other foreign visitors not mentioned above must apply for a visitor visa from the nearest Australian embassy or consulate in your location.

You must also remember that Australia has a strict import law . There are many foods that you cannot bring here (e.g. dried fruit, homemade food, etc), which were put in place to protect its sensitive ecosystem.

Other travel tips

You can start arranging some travel items, such as booking your accommodation and tours, once you have the dates picked. It’s the hotel that you want to book as soon as possible, especially if you plan to visit during the peak season.

The travel sites below are what we highly recommend on our blog because many of them are super flexible with cancellations and offer a wide range of choices.

So what are you waiting for? Here is the top 3-week itinerary that’s guaranteed to give the best, authentic, and memorable experience of Australia’s beautiful coastline.

Melbourne for 4 days

Melbourne is one of Australia’s most popular and iconic cities, known for its art and music scenes, lively young crowds, and delicious food.

You wouldn’t have really visited Melbourne if you didn’t check out the city’s famous art scene. Visit the famed Australian Museum of Modern Art, then head to the Linden New Art Gallery to see some of Australia’s upcoming contemporary artists’ work.

  • Go to an underground concert

Melbourne’s music scene is renowned, but not for large artists in stadium tours. Melbourne has a thriving underground music scene, with tiny packed bars showcasing local bands and artists. These shows aren’t often publicly promoted, so head to a Melbourne music Facebook page to see what you can find.

  • Do a day trip along the Great Ocean Road and Visit the 12 Apostles

The best day trip from Melbourne has to be a drive along the Great Ocean Road. You can even stop along the way to see the iconic 12 Apostles. ( suggested tour ). So book a tour or rent a car and head out for a full day of exploring some of the country’s most dramatic coastal scenery.

  • Take a food tour

Melbourne has some of Australia’s most diverse and delicious cuisine. Grab a tour or simply walk through the streets of some of Melbourne’s hip districts and find an unbelievable range of cuisines to taste. I recommend visiting A1 Bakery and Very Good Falafel.

  • Try a delicious Australian coffee

Australia is famous for its coffee, and for good reason. Just walking around, you’ll find thousands of little coffee shops dotting the streets. The best coffee usually comes from small businesses, and for the full experience, get yourself the quintessential Aussie drink, the flat white.

  • Take a walk through Fitzroy and Northcote

Fitzroy and Northcote are two of the city’s trendiest suburbs. Take a walk through the graffitied back allies to see street art, vintage shops, tiny galleries, record stores, and hip restaurants.

Accommodations in Melbourne

  • Affordable: Space Hotel or Flinders Backpackers
  • Mid-range: The Victoria Hotel or Atlantis Hotel
  • Luxury: The Langham or Crown Towers

Sydney and The Blue Mountains for 6 days

Sydney and its nearby Blue Mountains are two of the most famous spots to visit in Australia. S ydney is famous for its iconic landmarks like the Opera House and Harbor Bridge , while the Blue Mountains are famous for their stunning viewpoints and diverse native Australian forests.

To get there from Melbourne, you can either take a short 1-hour flight, a 10-hour train or drive for roughly 8 hours. From the airport, the centre of Sydney is easily accessible due to the city’s amazing public transport system.

  • Visit the iconic Australian landmarks

You can’t visit Sydney without visiting its iconic Australian landmarks. The Opera House, Luna Park, and the Harbor Bridge are the two most notable.

For the cheapest experience, I recommend taking the Ferry from Circular Quay to Luna Park, which takes you right under the harbour bridge. From there you can take the train back over the bridge to see views of the Harbour and Opera House.

Then take a picnic lunch and relax next to the Opera House in the beautiful Botanical Gardens.

  • Relax at Manly Beach

Next, you have to visit the city’s iconic beaches. The best by far for overall experience is Manly. The beach has beautiful bright green ocean pools to swim and relax in, plus a surf break and hundreds of beautiful cafes, stores, and restaurants lining the beachfront.

But make sure to put on sunscreen, and the Australian sun is relentless!

  • Spend 2 days in the Blue Mountains National Park

A visit to Sydney is incomplete without heading to the Blue Mountains National Park, which is also where Luca grew up. The Blue Mountains are one of Australia’s natural wonders, with mountains that are actually… blue to the eye.

The Mountains are the perfect place to go if you’re looking for peace, beautiful scenery, bushwalks, and adventure experiences. Relax under a waterfall, head for a walk, and enjoy the beautiful ambience.

The Mountains are also one place in Australia where you can see snow! Read more in Luca’s expert guide on seeing snow in Australia .

Read more about what to do and see in Luca’s Guide about why the Blue Mountains are worth visiting !

  • Go rock climbing or canyoning

One thing you must do in the Blue Mountains is experience Its world-class adventure. The Mountains are considered to be a mecca of Australian rock climbing, and with towering cliffs as far as the eye can see, that’s no surprise. Similarly, if you aren’t comfortable with heights, a canyon might be the way to go.

If you aren’t experienced, make sure to book a tour instead. Try to book only tours with local guides from local companies, as private tourism has hurt the Blue Mountains over the last 10 years.

Here, you can also reach The Great Barrier Reef, which is definitely a must-see during your 3 weeks on East Coast of Australia. Plus, the fact that you can simply lie on the beach and enjoy the sun and water, is a great way to wrap up your trip.

GENERAL TRAVEL INFO FOR VISITORS TO AUSTRALIA

Visa: Unless you are an Australian or New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident, or identify as a Torres Strait Island – practically everyone else needs a travel visa to enter Australia. Folks from the USA, UK and several other European countries are eligible for the free Visitor which allows visitors to stay for up to 3 months for each entry in a 12 month period.

That’s plenty of time to explore – but if you want to stay longer, there are other visas available too. Use the Australian Governments (free) visa finder tool to find the right one for you.

Currency: The official currency in Australia is the Australian Dollar ($, AUD). You can withdraw currency from ATMs using your local bank card or a designated travel card. If you are visiting from another country, be sure to check any fees and charges from your bank prior to using it and carry a second source of payment/cash in case your primary card gets ‘eaten’ by an ATM.

Language: English (Although Australia has no ‘official’ langauge, English is the most common language and is spoken throughout the country.) Almost 80% of all residents speak English at home, with Mandarin (2.5%) and Arabic (1.4%) spoken at home in small percentages.

WiFi/Internet Access: Depending on your length of stay and in what country, you can either purchase a local sim card (in advance or on arrival) – to swap out with the one in your own phone to avoid roaming charges. OR, grab a pay as you go portable Wifi Devices which means you can keep your sim active and connect wirelessly. Just remember to turn off data roaming so you don’t incur any hefty charges.

Essential Travel Tips for Australia for First Time Visitors: The Practical Stuff

The best time to visit australia.

Two bright yellow fish swimming on a coral reef

If you’re in it for the most perfect time to visit – specifically when the weather’s not too hot nor cold and when flights are relatively cheap – you must go between March-May and September-November.

If you’re the “always in for summer” type of traveler, you must visit from December to February. During this season, the average temperature can be anywhere between 15-30 degrees. So, be sure to bring a water bottle and hydrate!

If you’re in it for a lot of food and wine thrills, you have to plan your visit from March to May (a.k.a. the Autumn season). You have to brace yourself, though! This particular period is the busiest of all. Expect big crowds, busier places, and jam-packed tourist destinations.

If you fancy an all-white season and game for an intense snow skiing sesh, head for the mountains in Victoria, Southern New South Wales, and Tasmania sometime during the winter. The Winter season in Australia begins in June and extends up until August.

Knee with a circle of sunscreen with a heart drawn into it

If you want to try diving, surfing, kayaking, canoeing, and other water-related activities and experiences, time your visit for between September to November and head to the North East coast. Remember to pack your sunblock and sunglasses along with you!

TOP TIP: Wear sunblock. Even on a cloudy day. The sun is very strong in Australia and it is easy to get burnt. Don’t stand out as a tourist by turning bright red!

How To Get Around Australia

Australia sure is a BIG country to explore. But, would you believe it if I tell you it’s very easy to go around in it? Australia has a lot of transport systems made readily available and accessible for all types of travellers out there!

Virgin Australia airplane in the sky

Australia has a bunch of domestic airlines to save you in travelling around large distances. You may start getting yourself familiar with the following: Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar, Tiger Airways, and Rex. Knowing about their routes might give you a headstart in planning for your very own itinerary, as well as your budget!

If you’re one who enjoys travelling the long way to explore whatever you can, taking the bus in Australia is perfect for you to cover longer distances. Be comforted to know that coach and bus travel in the country is not only comfortable but also efficient and reasonably priced given their amenities. Enjoy free Wi-Fi, reading lights, and airconditioning throughout!

If you want to witness Australia in the most scenic yet convenient way possible, opt for the trains. Believe me when I say the train is the way to go.

  • TrainLink: It runs from Sydney through New South Wales, down through Canberra to Melbourne and North to Brisbane in Queensland.
  • V-Line: It connects Melbourne with regional hubs located in Victoria.
  • Queensland Rail: It covers the entirety of Queensland.
  • TransWA: It has services through Western Australia.
  • The Ghan Train and Indian Pacific: Both generally sweep through the country. The Ghan specifically travels to and from Adelaide and Darwin, Red Centre, and the Top End. The Indian Pacific, on the other hand, runs between Sydney and Perth, through Broken Hill, Adelaide, and Kalgoorlie.

Bright red engine of The Ghan

If you want to experience everything Australia offers, you also have to try getting on board on a ferry (and depending on where that is, you may need to have the stomach for it, as well!).

  • Spirit of Tasmania: It operates a nightly passenger and vehicle ferry service from Melbourne (Victoria) and Devonport (Tasmania) – and is a notoriously bumpy crossing.
  • SeaLink: Connects Cape Jervis (South Australia) and Kangaroo Island multiple times a day.
  • Other ferry services: Other ferry services also operate that connect suburbs to capital cities such as those that run in and around Sydney Harbour, or those on the Swan River in Perth or on the Brisbane River.

4x4 driving towards the camera on a dusty red road in the Australian outback

Travelling in a car in Australia will give you comfort and the best road trip experience there is in the world! In case you didn’t know, the country boasts of its network of well-maintained roads.

Public WiFi Availability in Australia

Yup, don’t worry. We understand the need to connect to the internet, especially when traveling abroad. If you don’t have a local sim card and/or a portable WiFi device, lucky for you — we searched for this complete list of free WiFi hotspots around Australia . Just remember to be cautious, though. Hackers can easily have access to your personal information when you connect to these.

The Emergency number in Australia

Although we’re hoping you won’t ever have a need for this number, it’s always better to be prepared than sorry. Dial 000 (triple zero) when you encounter an emergency and are requiring the assistance of the police, fire, or ambulance departments.

While spending a day on the sand and frolicking in the water sounds like a great idea – a lot of beaches have lifeguards present for a reason. The rips around Australia can be life-threatening and must be respected. If there is a lifeguard on duty on the beach you find yourself on, be sure to swim between the flags they have set up. They are there to show you the safest point on the beach for swimming.

You have to try local beer, coffee & wine in Australia

Woman holding an Expresso Martini in front of the Melbourne skyline

In case you didn’t know, Aussies invented the Flat White. And if you are a coffee drinker, you have to try one in Melbourne – where coffee culture is practically a religion!

Aside from coffee, you may also want to spend some time enjoying the Australian craft beer scene, and having a glass ( or bottle ) or two of some of the worlds best wines. From Margaret River to the Yarra Valley, Hunter Valley to the Barossa – there is no shortage of incredible wine in this country.

Just remember to be a responsible drinker – and absolutely DO NOT drink and drive.

Kangaroos and koalas are not that common in Australia

Koala sitting upright in a tree holding onto the branch in front of him

There are plenty of places to see them though. From numerous national parks and wildlife sanctuaries to secluded spots out in the country. Read our complete guide to Australian animals here to find out more. Also, not all Aussie animals are trying to kill you. Just around 75% of them!

Aussies use Australian English

Australian English is relatively different from American English or any other English for the matter – specifically in spelling, pronunciation, slang and shortening of some words. Oh and swearing is pretty common among friends in day to day conversation.

‘Mate’ is used universally – whether you’re the friend of a person or a complete stranger. It is a uniquely Aussie phenomenon which when used implies a sense of shared experience, mutual respect and unconditional assistance.

Nicknames, and the shortening of most words – often ends in -O, -A or -Y/-IE: Stevo (name), Arvo (afternoon), Straya (Australia), Barbie (BBQ) Footy (Football – Australian, not English), Accadacca (AC/DC), Tinny (can of beer), Servo (Petrol/Service Station), Bottle-O (The equivalent of a British ‘Off-Licence’ where alcohol is purchased for consumption off the premises, etc)

This might take a little bit of getting used to and may need a bit of translation from a local from time to time (but scroll down – we have included a few basic words below to give you a head start!)

(Outside of a Pub) You Buy Alcohol either from a Warehouse or A Drive Through Bottle Shop

wine bottles on display in a liquor store

And if that concept doesn’t blow your mind, you also can’t buy alcohol from the supermarket (like in the UK), but have to go to a dedicated alcohol shop/liquor store. There are often smaller, separated buildings located next to the supermarket (and which often sell alcohol at a premium price for the convenience) and are owned by the supermarkets. Coles has Liquorland, Woolworths has BWS etc.

Or you can satisfy your alcohol needs (and get cheaper prices) with a visit to Dan Murphys – which is essentially a warehouse full of beer, wine & spirits. Affectionately known as Uncle Dan’s by many across Australia, these huge buildings are located on retail parks which you wouldn’t normally walk to – and can’t walk back from carrying your haul (case of wine/slab of beer etc) – as it’s typically always cheaper to buy in bulk.

Is Australia Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

  • Keep an eye on your belongings (bag/camera/phone etc) and be aware of your surroundings (for example, don’t have your head down glued to your phone)
  • Be cautious and vigilant in busy areas or in crowds.
  • Be wary of the ‘overly helpful’ local. The one who approaches you with stories and tips but seems to want nothing in exchange. And don’t feel obliged to give them anything.
  • Be mindful of your drinking – that’s not to say not to drink, but alcohol lowers your inhibitions and reaction time. And a bag of Aussie Goon is a pretty standard item among the backpacker crowd and considered part of the Australian travelling experience!

  • Walk with purpose – it will make you appear more confident and especially in Australian cities, will help you blend in with the locals.
  • And finally, take note of where the exits are – wherever you are throughout Australia. You know, like you do on a plane. If there is an emergency, or you need to get away quickly, knowing where the exit is can be invaluable.

Top Australia Tips for Your First Visit: The Fun Stuff

Where are the best places to visit in australia.

Spread out across this vast country, Australia has eight city capitals, one within each State & Terriroty, which are all wonderfully unique packed with exceptional dining experiences, historic attractions, and non-stop shopping opportunities. Here’s why you need to visit each of them which will help in planning your trip:

  • Canberra is situated in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). It is the national capital, a city known for its cultural treasures and vibrant annual festivals.
  • Sydne y is the largest capital in the country home to the famous Sydney Opera House, The Harbour Bridge, Bondi Beach and close to the Blue Mountains for a perfect day trip from Sydney!

  • Melbourne is the “Culture Capital of Australia” and one of the major cities in Victoria. From fashion to art, to film, to food, to sports, to music, to kids events, or to spiritual and multicultural festivals… Name it, Melbourne has it! (and some great day trips fro Melbourne too!)
  • Hobart houses some of Australia’s convict era remnants adjoined with its panoramic coastal scenery. This picturesque city holds a number of interesting places to see including (but not limited to, of course) the charming Georgian era towns and villages!
  • Cairns  is Australia’s adventure travel paradise – with bungee jumps and jungle swings, scuba diving and snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef, Skydiving over beaches and seaplane flights. For an adrenaline kick, head to Cairns.
  • Adelaide is the perfect escape from the bustling crowds you might find elsewhere in Australia. It has surrounding hills to the east, beautiful beaches to the west (don’t miss Hervey Bay), luxuriously wide boulevards, and breathtaking park and garden views!
  • Perth has a small population, the greatest weather year-round, and has a convenient location to stunning beaches. If this doesn’t make you want to visit Perth, I don’t know what else will!

Clear blue water next to a rocky coast at Rottnest Island

  • Darwin is the top end’s darling! From its World War II history to its very diverse food scene, to the best tropical lifestyle an Australian traveler could want, not to mention the different Outback tours through Kakadu National Park offered from the city – Darwin in the Northern Territory is the best place to be!
  • Brisbane houses the liveliest subtropical paradise with ever-delicious food, coffee, as well as an epic music and arts scene. Not to mention the fact that it’s just an hour away from the world’s best beaches on the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast.

How To Plan Your Budget for your visit to Australia

If there’s one thing you ought to know about Australia, especially if you’re a first-time traveler, is that it can be quite (sometimes really) expensive. To experience it at its best, you have to allot around $100-$200 per day for your accommodations, food, and activities.

Sad to say, though, transportation is a totally different conversation – meaning you need to allot a separate budget for it. Doing your research might do the trick in helping you get the best deals possible and that means everything!

What to eat in Australia

Iconic Australian Food (pie, lamington, fairy bread on plates topped with a miniature Australian flag)

  • Vegemite –  a dark brown paste made from various vegetables, yeast extract and spice additives. Regardless of anyone telling you not to try it because it tastes weird , I say still do! Who knows, you might like it more than you can probably imagine.
  • Tim Tams – a famous Australian chocolate biscuit, which, anyone hardly says no to. Do yourself a favour by grabbing one and snack on it to your heart’s content!
  • Chicken Parmigiana – although not particularly of Australian descent, you will most certainly encounter this dish in most Australian pubs  — and it’s worth the try!
  • Fish and Chips – as the country is surrounded by oceans, it’s easy to say that their fish recipes are the bomb! This one’s definitely a must-try for the tourists.
  • Pavlova – a meringue cake base topped with whipped cream and fruit that you can score from a cake shop, a bakery, or from major supermarket chains (directly look for it in the frozen dessert section).

Useful Tips & Friendly Advice for your First Visit to Australia

Australian border control is very strict.

Bringing prohibited items, whether or not you’re aware, will result in serious borderline problems. Included in the roster of forbidden things include fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, feathers, weapons, firearms, and wildlife among other things. It’s best to double-check your things before embarking on a trip of your lifetime by doing your research.

Scams to avoid in Australia

Australia being a great country and a continent by itself makes it not vulnerable to travel-related scams. Sad, but true. Here are several things you need to watch out for and avoid when traveling to Australia:

Money changing

Yup, it sounds so old school but it still happens anywhere – might be at a restaurant where the cashier switches you $50 for $5 and tells you you didn’t give enough cash, at an attraction, or right at the money changer. When dealing with money, it’s always better to double-check and try to book your activities in advance so you have total control.

Credit card skimming

Basically, credit (or debit) card skimming is the act of illegal duplication of information from the magnetic strip of your card. As much as possible, be wary especially when the restaurant personnel collects your card and swipes it out of your sight.

Tours from unreliable guides or websites

To make sure you’re not booking some dodgy day tours, you have to make sure you’re booking from official travel agencies. Before clicking that purchase button, do your research. Check reviews, ask for recommendations from your friends and family – or particularly anyone you trust. Doing so will be helpful during the time of an accident or an emergency.

  • Chips (commonly called hot chips ) mean fries.
  • Fortnightly means every two weeks.
  • Boot means trunk.
  • Bum bag means fanny pack.
  • Lollies means candies/sweets.

Tipping Culture in Australia

In a country where the minimum wage is a lot higher compared to other countries, tipping isn’t that much of a necessity — most especially where service charges are included in the bill (typically for group or specialty bookings rather than a meal for 2). No one’s stopping you, though! You can still give tips if you want to and you feel like it.

Fun fact – it was so successful in the 80s that there is a generation of Aussies with a Vitamin D deficiency!)
  • Carry photo-ID
  • Swim between the flags on Aussie beaches
  • Watch out for drop bears …

Don’t:

  • Drink & Drive
  • Climb Uluru (thankfully the are now rules to prevent people climbing the sacred rock, but it’s good to remind everyone that it shouldn’t be done, should that ever change)
  • Eat, Drink or Smoke on public transport
  • Turn up to a BBQ empty-handed (bring a bottle of wine or beer that the host will enjoy)

PUNSAND BAY IS THE CLOSEST COMMERCIAL ACCOMMODATION AND PARK, TO ‘THE TIP’ OF AUSTRALIA. GET UP EARLY AND BEAT THE CROWDS.

We are the closest commercial accommodation and park to ‘The Tip’ of Australia. This means that when you choose to stay with us, you can get up early and beat the crowds and/or leave it until later and enjoy a spectacular sunset at the most northern point of the Australian mainland. We are 5km south-west of ‘The Tip’ as the crow flies and the drive to get there from here takes approximatley 1 hour, pending road conditions and traffic. From the car park, it’s about a 20 minute walk to the famous “YOU ARE STANDING AT THE NORTHERN MOST POINT OF THE AUSTRALIAN CONTINENT” sign. With that bucket list ticked, we suggest celebrating at the most northern bar on the Australian mainland – our very own Corrugation Bar – wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Our bar & restaurant is open to the public 7 days per week.

‘The Tip’ of Australia is instantly recognisable, thanks to its iconic sign. To get there, you must walk over a rocky headland; it’s not a difficult walk, but we do suggest taking some drinking water and wearing a hat and some sun protection. Along the way you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding seas and islands. When you get to ‘The Tip’, you’ll see two islands – Yorke Island (tall and pointy) is to your left and Eborac Island is to the right. The other geographic feature is Frangipani Bay, to the west.

Once you’ve made it to The Tip of Australia traditionally known as ‘Pajinka’, take a moment to really enjoy this bucket list experience. During your visit, we ask that you please respect this beautiful part of the country, take only photos, make only memories and leave only footprints. Please note there are no amenities on site, so for your comfort, please make use of rest room facilities before you commence your trip, to ‘The Tip’.

WALKING TRACKS

There are three tracks you can take from the car park. One takes up over the top of the headlands and provides amazing 360-degree views of where the Coral Sea meets the Torres Strait and Arafura Sea. At the height of the climb, you’ll see a distance plaque to showcase how far you’ve made it. On a low tide you can walk back along the side track to the water’s edge and beach where you can make your way back along the sand to the carpark. The third is walking on the high side of the mangroves.

Australia’s Grace Kim opens 4-stroke lead in LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship

LOS ANGLES (AP) — Grace Kim opened a four-stroke lead Friday in the LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship, shooting a 5-under 66 in tricky afternoon conditions at Wilshire Country Club.

A stroke ahead after an opening 64, Kim had an eagle, four birdies and a bogey to get to 12-under 130. The 23-year-old Australian patiently worked her way around the tree-lined layup, trying not to get frustrated with the bumpy greens.

“I think the less thoughts, the better,” Kim said. “Obviously, during the afternoon round today, we’ve got poa annua greens so just have to stay patient with them. You can kind of see how it can get bumpy, so working with the course and not getting too wrapped up around putts not going in.”

Maja Stark was second after a 69, also in the afternoon.

“I feel like maybe not taking everything so personal because they are a little bit wobbly.” Stark said. “Especially late. Like the whole day pretty much the ball has been wobbling because there has been so many people walking on it.”

The Swede finished second last week in Texas in The Chevron Championship, two strokes behind top-ranked Nelly Korda in the first major of the year. Korda withdrew Monday, a day after her fifth straight victory.

Defending champion Hannah Green of Australia shot a 69 to join Germany’s Esther Henseleit (68) at 6 under. Denmark’s Kristine Pedersen (67) and American Auston Kim (71) were 5 under, and Rose Zhang (69) topped the group at 4 under.

Grace Kim won the LOTTE Championship last year in a playoff in Hawaii for her first LPGA Tour title. She missed the cut in The Chevron , shooting 76-72.

She started play Friday on the back nine, rebounding from a bogey on the par-3 12th with the eagle on the par-5 13th and a birdie on the par-4 14th. On 13, she hit a 5-wood to 10 feet. She added birdies on Nos. 3, 6 and 7 on the second nine.

“I think I’ve got to breathe a little bit,” she said. “I did get a little bit nervous on my back nine, so making sure I don’t rush too much and just staying in the present.

Are the Atherton Tablelands in Queensland, Australia worth visiting?

James Boettcher, founder of FNQ Nature Tours, gives you the best tips to enjoy your Atherton Tablelands trip. Photo / FNQ Nature Tours 1

FNQ Nature Tours offers small group tours across the Daintree National Park, Atherton Tablelands and beyond. Here James Boettcher, the company’s founder, shares his top tips for making the most of Atherton Tablelands.

Inspired by the rich natural beauty of Australia , I began guiding multi-day safari tours when I was 21 years old. More recently, I established FNQ Nature Tours in 2016. It was the beginning of a dream, creating unforgettable and life-changing connections with the natural world and inspiring the preservation and support of native flora and fauna through responsible eco-tourism.

Read more: Australia’s ultimate travel guide: Unmissable spots in every Australian state

I now manage a team of three incredible naturist guides , who use their local knowledge to tailor some of the most exciting wildlife encounters available in our region. As a young company with a motivated team, we are highly focused on influencing how people travel. Along with our partners in the Australian Wildlife Journeys Collective, I am confident our range of touring products will continue to benefit the region’s ecology.

Why visit the Atherton Tablelands

The Atherton Tablelands is a rainforest hinterland that blankets the mountains west of Cairns, a region encompassing a stark contrast of experiences. The Tablelands offer an abundance of wilderness, wildlife and culture, along with locally farmed/grown food and wine.

The Atherton Tablelands are easily my personal favourite region of the Wet Tropics. A convenient 60-minute drive from Cairns, there is something for everyone, from vast crater lakes to incredible forest giants, endemic wildlife around every corner and waterfalls galore. Heading up into the mountains to the west away from the coast, you immediately feel you’ve stumbled onto a secret.

Best things to see and do

You haven’t experienced the Atherton Tablelands until you’ve sat on the lakeside timber deck of the Lake Barrine Tea House enjoying fresh, warm, locally made tea and scones. The nearby Rainforest Walk only serves to complement the Tea House, with ancient rainforest trees up to 1000 years old. Keep an eye out for Victoria’s Riflebird of Paradise, too.

For lunch, I would pop into the Malanda Collective Café, located in the Malanda township. This cute boutique family business offers a beautiful selection of homemade produce, very well catered to those who like to “do it like the locals do”. Customers are often welcomed by owner Lucia, who will go above and beyond to ensure your comfort. The coffee is excellent, and you’ll be surrounded by local knick-knacks. Checkout the wildlife calendars by local wildlife photographer Matt Cornish, a dead giveaway that wild tree kangaroos can be spotted on the nearby walking trails.

Seeing the region’s endemic wildlife is always a big highlight of any trip to Atherton Tablelands. The one that sticks out the most for me would be spotting a platypus in the wild. If you’re not choosing a guided tour, you should. But if not, visitors can try their luck at Peterson Creek in Yungaburra.

Another “must do” I would highlight for an Atherton Tablelands day out would be the Curtin Fig Tree. Only a five-minute drive from the historic town of Yungaburra, it’s an explosion of nature with an intricate life story. Photographers, bring your wide-angle lens.

If you want to experience the region’s delicious local produce, is a short drive from the infamous Millaa Millaa Falls. The only Biodynamic Farmhouse Cheesery and Café in North Queensland. All the products are made on site and with a backdrop of Queensland’s highest peak, it’s hard to pass up.

Nature photographers should add the Curtain Fig Tree to their dream photo destinations. Photo / TTNQ 2

Where to stay

When it comes to local accommodation, there are plenty of holiday cottages, rainforest lodges and boutique motels to choose from on the Atherton Tablelands.

My wife and I eloped at The Canopy Rainforest Treehouses & Wildlife Sanctuary near the town of Tarzali, just a 10-minute drive from Malanda. You might be greeted by Dan, the warm and humble caretaker. Dan has a customer service standard like no other, and the lodges have both resident cassowaries and tree kangaroos.

I can highly recommend Chambers Wildlife Lodge near Lake Eacham for wildlife enthusiasts. You’ll see catbirds and pademelons from your balcony. See Meg at Eden House Retreat or Gina at Blue Summit Lodge in Yungaburra for super clean and tiny lodges, central to all the Tableland action.

Top tips for visiting

  • Not all walks within the national parks have rubbish collection. Plan to take your rubbish with you on your visit, or take it into one of the nearby towns such as Atherton, Malanda or Yungaburra.
  • Being so close to Cairns, some of the Tablelands’ highlights can be done in half a day, such as Yungaburra and Lake Barrine. This could be combined with a flight in or out of Cairns.
  • The beautiful and well-known Lake Barrine Tea House was once the sight of a convalescent camp during World War II. In 1943 the guesthouse at Lake Barrine was taken over by a detachment of the 2/1 Australian Army Convalescent Depot. Jump on one of the lake cruises operated by Steve Curry, third-generation owner of the Tea House and hear about the family history.
  • Easily the most underrated place to visit on the Atherton Tablelands is the Tolga Bat Hospital. Located 10 minutes from Atherton, this incredible bat hospital is run by Jenny Mclean.
  • The Tablelands area is very family-friendly, with short driving times, engaging nature, huge open playgrounds and kid-friendly restaurants. You can go nocturnal kayaking in Lake Tinaroo with Uncle Brian’s Tours, and explore the European history at Herberton Historic Village or one of many botanical walks. Malanda Falls is another close waterfall for families with nearby food and facilities.

Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park has a rich and diverse landscape. In the north grasslands and woodlands, wetlands, coastal estuaries, mangroves and mudflats are prominent. In the south, sandstone hills and escarpments dominate the landscape.

There are a vast array of campsites to choose from within the park, but make sure you book in advance.

Optional Detour – Optional Detour- Elim Beach

Head through the Indigenous township of Hope Vale to Cape Bedford and Elim Beach. Drive along the beach to the coloured sand cliffs.

Rinyirru (Lakefield) to Coen

Dirt road Cape York

As you travel north today, keep your eye out for massive termite mounds and abundant bird life. After reaching the Peninsula Development Road (PDR), hang a right and head to Coen, a small town situated in the centre of the Cape York region. Stay in town, enjoy a meal and a cold drink at the Exchange Hotel or continue on a few kilometres to reach The Bend , a free bush campsite.

To get rid of the day’s dust, jump into the shallow waters of the Coen River.

Coen to Bramwell Station

Moreton Telegraph Station Campground in Cape York

Today is another scenic drive and you will even encounter sections of bitumen! Head North to the Archer River roadhouse for a hearty breakfast. After leaving Archer River, cross the Wenlock River to find Moreton Telegraph Station . Take a stroll and perhaps you will spot an agile wallaby, a palm cockatoo or the magnificent riflebird. Push on to Bramwell Station , a popular tourist spot which includes accommodation, camping ground, bar and live entertainment.

Optional Detour – Western Cape or Eastern Cape

Head to the Western Cape and visit the coastal town of Weipa, rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage. Enjoy stunning beaches, unspoilt wilderness and unrivalled fishing! Or, alternatively, head over to the East Coast of Cape York to Portland Roads, Chilli Beach, Iron Range National Park and Lockhart River. Portland Roads is a great base for birdwatching and fishing, while the Aboriginal community of Lockhart River is famous for its vibrant artwork.

If you’re itching for some extra time on the road, why not try both?

The Old Telegraph Track forms the western boundary of Heathlands Resources Reserve and Apudthama National Park (Jardine River National Park). While you could take the bypass roads that skirt around water crossings between the Junction and the Jardine, why would you? That’s the fun part – even though the Gunshot Creek crossing is considered extremely challenging.

Make a pit-stop at Fruit Bat Falls , Twin Falls or Elliot Falls, all scenic spots for a picnic and refreshing swim. To cross the Jardine, head west and take the vehicular ferry .

Tip of Cape York Peninsula

Drop in at Seisia (pronounced “say see ya”) near Bamaga to check out what locals reckon is Australia’s best fishing jetty, or continue to Punsand Bay. This spot is just 5km west of The Tip. Still, it can take up to 45 minutes to drive this final stretch to mainland Australia’s northernmost point. Once you’re there, you’ll need to take the iconic photo with the “You Are Standing at the Northernmost Point of the Australian Continent” sign. Try and arrive at low tide, as the walk to the sign only takes 10 minutes across the sand (it’s about 30 minutes over rocks at high tide).

Camping at Punsand Bay Cape York

Stay There are several options for accommodation at the Tip of Cape York including camping and motel accommodation. Try the beachside Cape York Camping Punsand Bay , offering every level of comfort, from beachfront cabins with ensuites to unpowered bush camping sites.

Optional Detour – Torres Strait Islands

Depart from Seisia via ferry to Thursday Island and Horn Island for a glimpse into another culture and bring the island history to life with a guided tour.

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  • Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

Virgin Australia has suspended its direct service from Adelaide to Bali after a delay in the delivery of 10 new Boeing MAX planes.

Travellers keen to head to the hotspot from the Aussie city won’t be able to do so between April 28 and June 9 as the airline awaits the delivery of the new aircraft.

Virgin Australia suspends flights from Adelaide to Bali from April 28 to June 9.

Holiday-makers can still fly from Adelaide to Bali — but will now have a travel time up to 14 hours as the aircraft will have to go via Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne and transfer to a connecting flight.

The move comes after a delay in the delivery of 10 new Boeing MAX planes.

Those who have booked a flight during the impacted period will be contacted directly by the airline or their travel agent to provide alternative arrangements or “be offered a full refund”, the airline said.

“We have made the decision to continue suspension of direct Adelaide-Bali services from June 2024 due to various factors including the delayed delivery of new aircraft,” a Virgin Australia spokesperson told enews.com.au.

“We acknowledge this decision will be disappointing for some guests and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience.

Adelaide Airport’s plan to bring back direct international flights

“Guests booked to travel between Adelaide and Bali from June onwards will be directly contacted by Virgin Australia or their travel agent to provide alternative arrangements, including connecting flights to and from Bali on the booked day of travel via Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. The Weeknd

The Weeknd’s postponed tour of Australia is now canceled and ticket owners will be refunded.

The Canadian R&B superstar had initially scheduled an 11-date stadium tour of Australia and New Zealand, winding its way across both countries last November and December.

“The Weeknd ‘After Hours Til Dawn Tour’ for Australia & New Zealand is still in process of being rescheduled,” reads a statement from LN, seen by Billboard . “Whilst we continue to work through the rescheduling process with the artist, tickets for the existing 2023 tour will be cancelled with all ticket holders receiving a full refund accordingly.”

Ticket holders of the The Weeknd’s ‘After Hours Til Dawn Tour’ shows who previously held on to their tickets will be able to access a priority purchase window for the new tour in Australia and New Zealand when announced, the message reads, linking to a priority waitlist . All current ticket holders will receive an automatic refund.

The tour was originally announced last August with just four shows, visiting each of Australia’s big three east coast cities — Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane — and including a single date in Auckland, NZ.

Additional dates were added last September , boosting the itinerary to 11 across both markets.

The Weeknd’s tour is scrapped as Australia’s festivals market navigates turbulent waters. In recent weeks, the 2024 editions of Splendour in the Grass, Mona Foma, and Groovin The Moo, with soft ticket sales playing a part in each story.

The inaugural Soundcheck report, published by Creative Australia, found the climate for operating a festival was a “highly complex” one, with event organizers challenged with myriad issues, from rapidly increasing costs, changing ticket buying behavior and more.

In the U.S., he has landed seven No. 1s on the Billboard Hot 100 and four No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200.

On Australia’s ARIA Albums Chart, published last Friday, April 19 , the Weeknd’s hits collection The Highlights lifts 8-4 in its 167th week on the tally. It’s triple-platinum certified in Australia.

Will Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras Tour’ Setlist Change After ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ Release?

Will Taylor Swift s Eras Tour Setlist Change After The Tortured Poets Department Release 001

Taylor Swift ’s The Tortured Poets Department has already captivated the world , leaving her fans to wonder whether any of the new songs will pop up on her Eras Tour setlist.

Swift, 34, kicked off her three-hour concert series in March 2023 in Arizona, soon traversing the United States, Central and South America, Asia and Australia. The shows highlight most of her past albums: Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, Reputation, Folklore, Evermore and Midnights . There also is a section dedicated to “surprise songs,” where Swift adds two new acoustic renditions (most recently, mash-ups) to the show.

Swift has been on hiatus since early March, weeks before The Tortured Poets Department dropped on Friday, April 19. The record, her 11th studio album, features 31 songs including “Fortnight,” “So Long, London,” “Fresh Out the Slammer,” “So High School” and “thanK you aIMee.”

Swift’s fans planning to see Eras later this year — the tour leg kicks off in Paris on Thursday, May 9 — have since taken to social media, curious if they will be able to hear any TTPD live.

“OK listen I NEED Taylor to add ‘I Can Do It With a Broken Heart’ to the Eras Tour setlist. … Just that ONE. … PLEASE. … It was MADE for the Eras Tour !!!!!!!!!!” a social media user wrote via X.

Another added, “I am so obsessed with Taylor’s new album idk how to survive the Eras Tour (if I actually go twice I might just drop dead afterwards).”

Will Taylor Swift s Eras Tour Setlist Change After The Tortured Poets Department Release 002

Since Eras has sections dedicated to Swift’s previous albums , it is possible that TTPD could get its own mini-set in the lineup. Not all of her preexisting cohorts feature the same amount of songs, so Swift could cut some songs in order to add a time for Tortured Poets additions .

Spotify added further fuel to the fire on Friday as Swifties noticed the streaming platform’s official video for “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” a TTPD track, features footage solely from the Eras Tour.

Breaking Down All of Taylor Swifts Eras Tour Surprise Song Mash Ups and What They Could Mean

Related: Breaking Down All of Taylor Swift's 'Eras Tour' Surprise Song Mash-Ups

Swift’s musical director David Cook , who has also been featured on several of her past LPs, also hinted that TTPD songs could make an appearance on the tour lineup.

“Not sure how much I can add to the discourse other than this album is really REALLY good. You FEEL it,” Cook wrote via Instagram on Friday, quoting “Loml” with a mind-blown emoji.

According to eagle-eyed Swifties that captured screenshots, Cook also wrote, “Wait until you hear the live versions.” The addition, however, has since been deleted.

Of course, it is also possible that Swift will drop a TTPD single in her surprise song section.

“How will The Tortured Poets Department affect the Eras Tour ? Hopefully only on surprise songs (in a good way),” an X user theorized.

While Swift has yet to address if TTPD will affect her Eras Tour setlist, she’s given fans insight into how she picks song s for the acoustic section.

“This has become my favorite part of the show because it’s become very chaotic and it’s become a challenge for me to think of new things to do for every single city,” Swift told the crowd in Singapore in March. “And hope that I’m doing something that you guys might like. It’s been a blast!”

Per the Grammy winner, she “invented [her] crazy acoustic section,” to be able to play “as many songs” as she could way over the 44 staples at each show. Adding TTPD tracks there seems like an easy way to do just that, if you ask Us.

The Tortured Poets Department is out now and Swift’s Eras Tour resumes on Thursday, May 9.

The sad, stale state of in-flight vegetarian meals

Who ordered the limp cucumber sandwich.

tours to the tip of australia

Last month, a traveler posted a photo to Reddit of his girlfriend’s vegetarian meal for a 12-hour flight. It wasn’t pretty.

The sandwich featured two grim cucumber slices and wan tomatoes. On the top half of the dry roll, faint oval imprints of the filling resembled cupping therapy marks. If the flight attendants had tried to revive the meal, they failed.

As a vegan, I could relate. For travelers who don’t eat animal products, the special meal delivered to our seat is often a mystery: What will the ingredients be? How was it prepared? Will it be halfway palatable?

We know the usual suspects all too well, tomato-soupy ratatouille, salty rice the color of pale sunshine or an anemic salad. We squirrel away extra packets of Biscoff not because we are members of the cookie’s fan club; we’re just trying to survive the flight.

The pitiful cuke is the latest publicly shared slight to vegetarian and vegan travelers seeking sustenance on airplanes. In 2023, a Japan Airlines passenger received a solitary banana with chopsticks for his vegan business-class breakfast. In March, Donna Zeigfinger, founder of Green Earth Travel , ordered a quinoa plate on a United flight. The travel adviser’s plant-based meal came with a side of chicken strips.

“They’re not quite getting it,” said Zeigfinger, a longtime vegan. “They’re still not understanding.”

On a 12 hour flight and this was my gf’s veggie sandwich around 8hrs in. by u/pestopopcorn in mildlyinfuriating

Airlines are constantly investing in meal service , especially in the higher ticket categories. American Airlines recently unveiled its reimagined menu, which included such meat-free dishes as truffle ricotta ravioli and vegetable and garbanzo bean tagine with couscous. Yet, veg travelers are discovering a disconnect between what’s on the menu and what lands with a thud — or whimper — on their tray table.

“One word — disgusting,” said Nikki Dewan, a Vegetarian Society member who participated in a recent Facebook survey about airplane food. “Airlines don’t make an effort to bring good, delicious and wholesome food for the airline customers.”

In a Gallup poll conducted in July, 4 percent of Americans said they were vegetarians. So, why aren’t airlines doing better? And can they please cheer up that sad cucumber with a little dressing?

Missing meals force airlines to improvise

In general, a catering company or in-house culinary team plans the in-flight menus and prepares thousands of meals and snacks in an industrial kitchen on the airport grounds. The airlines assume that all of the passengers will eat the standard meals unless they are otherwise informed.

No different from a restaurant or wedding reception, it is the diner’s responsibility to inform the host (in this case, the airline) of dietary restrictions or meal preferences. Most carriers require passengers to submit their meal choices at least 24 to 48 hours before departure, so the chefs can fill the special orders. If you wait until you’re on the plane to share your requirements, you could end up with an improvised meal conjured in the galley.

“I was always amazed by the time it takes to put together a special meal, which is actually not that easy,” said Daniel Klein, executive chef for research and development at LSG Group, one of the world’s largest airline catering firms. “That’s why I can sometimes see why you might just get a banana, because it’s a last-minute request.”

However, reserving a meal is no guarantee that you will receive it. The flight attendant might not deliver the dish to its rightful owner because of a technical glitch, human error or passenger interference.

“It’s not just the quality of the food or the availability. It’s actually the service,” said Deirdra Barr, director of communications for the U.K.-based Vegetarian Society. “So many people’s vegetarian or vegan meals go missing or someone else gets them, and that means they’re left with nothing.”

Grace Philips, a Vegetarian Society member, knew exactly what happened to her veg meal on a recent flight: Another passenger didn’t “fancy the meat option” and asked for the vegetarian option instead. When the flight attendant reached her seat, all of the veg meals were gone. “I was hungry,” she shared on the group’s Facebook page.

In these instances, the flight attendants will often assemble an improvised plate of food for the neglected passenger. They will forage in the galley or pinch items from their own mini-coolers.

On a flight from New York to Scotland, Elyse Mercedes King said a flight attendant donated her two apples. Vanessa Winsor once survived a long-haul trip with three segments of a satsuma mandarin, six grapes and a bread roll.

When Zeigfinger flew United from Washington Dulles to Berlin, her preordered vegan meal never materialized. The flight attendant tried to correct the injustice with a slapdash meal, plus 700 frequent-flier points.

“The flight attendant was really angry,” Zeigfinger said. “She acknowledged that this was a serious thing.”

The best and worst airlines for vegetarians and vegans

In the 1990s, many travelers who identified as carnivores on the ground became temporary vegetarians when flying. The meatless meal seemed like the tastier and less enigmatic option.

“People who weren’t vegetarian were ordering the vegetarian meal because it was so much better than the chicken or beef they would serve on the plane,” said James Doran, director of business development, tourism and hospitality practice at SIS International Research.

As airlines chase after loyalty members and elite travelers, they are paying more attention to overall meal service, including the previously maligned proteins. Some carriers have teamed up with celebrity chefs, such as Delta’s partnerships with Michelle Bernstein, Michael Chiarello and Linton Hopkins. Air France works with Michelin-starred French chefs and award-winning pastry chefs.

Charles Platkin, founder and executive director of the Center for Food as Medicine , described vegan and vegetarian meals as an “afterthought” in this profit-driven market. Even so, the major airlines are still providing special meals, including several that go beyond the traditional veg diet. The subcategories include Asian vegetarian, vegetarian lacto-ovo, fruit platter and Jain , a vegetarian diet that eschews root vegetables.

Travelers note that airlines that cater to populations inclined toward vegetarianism, for cultural or religious reasons, often excel in this department. Doran fondly recalled a vegetarian Malay meal on Malaysian Airlines and an Indian-style vegetarian dish on Emirates. However, this rule doesn’t always apply.

“Very surprisingly Air India is terrible on the occasions I’ve flown with them,” Teresa Dawkes shared on the Vegetarian Society’s Facebook page. “Pretty inedible and they didn’t have any gin.”

Ashley Isaacs Ganz, the vegetarian founder of the luxury tour operator Artisans of Leisure , said she wishes carriers based in countries with strong vegetarian traditions would better showcase their culinary heritage. For example, she suggested Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways incorporate Japanese temple cuisine into their menus.

“I always want to have the Japanese meal, but the different components of the meal are, for the most part, not vegetarian,” she said. “I would love for them to take it to the next level.”

In a Vegetarian Society Facebook post about airplane food, more airlines were panned than praised. Patricia Thompson called Irish carrier Aer Lingus “woeful” for serving dry veggie pasta for dinner and canapés with chicken bits that the flight attendants offered to pick off.

Not just pasta and salad anymore

To be fair, some airlines have been refining their palates.

Since 2009, Swiss has partnered with Hiltl , which claims to be the world’s oldest vegetarian restaurant (it was founded in Zurich in 1898). The airline celebrated its 10-year anniversary with a three-course meal that included spicy beetroot tabbouleh, penne with vegetarian bolognaise or massaman curry for the main course, and a vegan mango mousse for dessert.

In November, Australian carrier Qantas launched new vegan menu items in all of its classes. Economy passengers can dine on lemon herb pearl couscous with roasted carrots, baby beans and toasted almonds. Higher classes can sample such dishes as pumpkin and ginger soup with sourdough croutons; stir-fried shiitake mushrooms with tofu, chrysanthemum greens and jasmine rice; or plant-based orecchiette with sautéed mushrooms, spinach, cauliflower cream and pangrattato.

For its latest vegan and vegetarian menus, Air New Zealand introduced such dishes as cannellini bean smash with pan-fried tofu spinach and jackfruit with coconut red curry and black mustard seed steamed rice.

Klein recently developed a Western-themed vegan menu for Korean Air. For first class, he created a trio of amuse-bouches, including an onion puree flavored with passion fruit; smashed Yukon potatoes with fresh truffles and a chestnut puree; and a risotto with roasted vegetables.

He said the biggest challenge in crafting innovative in-flight meals is not the altitude, which dulls the taste buds, but the cost of some products. He said alternative meats are too expensive to include on menus.

“They are still very pricey,” he said. “We’re not there yet, so we go with regular items, but we try to be creative.”

Platkin is not clamoring for fake proteins on flights. He advocates for clean, healthy ingredients, and said the airlines already rely too heavily on processed foods and easy carbs.

When asked to review new menu options on American Airlines, he said the dishes look tasty, but he was concerned about the heavy use of cheese and the fake meat.

As for the meal plan for international economy passengers, his critique was short and to the point: “It is all pasta.”

Plane mess: Stories about extremely disgusting airplanes have been grossing out travelers. The question of plane cleanups became the subject of a recent debate after a flight attendant allegedly told a pregnant passenger to pick up the popcorn spilled by her toddler.

Frequent flying: Airline status isn’t what it used to be, but at least there are some good movies and TV shows to watch in the air. And somewhere out there, experts are trying to make airline food taste good.
