Welcome to our Road Condition Page

When Traveling to Mammoth Lakes, please carry chains and a winter survival kit with extra water and food in your trunk as well. Mammoth Lakes can get multiple feet of snow anytime from late September – May.

Before you ever leave home to drive up, you should have practiced in your driveway or on the side of a street putting your snow chains on. Watch the video below to learn more. If your search chain installs on YouTube, you can find a bunch of videos on this subject.

As a 30-year Mammoth Local, my advice is to have an AWD or 4 x 4 vehicle if you’re traveling here during a big storm.

For those with a 2-wheel drive, you will need to get really good at putting on and taking off your chains. Back when I had a two-wheel drive, I could pull over, do the job, and be back on the road in 10 mins.

The first time I tried it in a storm, it took 35 minutes, and I was frustrated; I learned quickly you can, too. It should also be said that if you’re in a 2-wheel drive with chains, you will find travel hard if the roads are R2.

The best advice is when the roads are that deep, don’t try and brave it. More than likely, you will get stuck.

PS Always add a shovel to your car when the forecast is calling for dumpage. At some point, you will need to dig out yourself or help somebody out.

There are a ton of Winter Driving Tips listed below. Don’t miss them.

Chain Installation

You must stop and put on chains when highway signs indicate chains are required. You can be cited by the California Highway Patrol and fined if you don’t. You will usually have about a mile between the “Chains Required” signs and the checkpoint to install your chains.

  • Control areas can change rapidly from place to place because of changing weather and road conditions.
  • The speed limit when chains are required is 25 or 30 miles an hour.
  • When you put on chains, wait until you can pull completely off the roadway to the right. Do not stop in a traffic lane where you will endanger yourself and block traffic.
  • Chain Installers: If you use the services of a chain installer, be sure to get a receipt and jot the installer’s badge number on it. Remember, chain installers are independent business people, not Caltrans employees. Having the badge number may help with any misunderstandings later. Chain installers are NOT allowed to sell or rent chains.
  • When removing chains, drive beyond the signs reading “End of Chain Control” to a pull-off area where you can safely remove them.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) does not sell nor recommend specific brands of tire chains. It is best to check your vehicle manufacturer’s specifications for the use of tire chains/traction devices.

Chain Installation Chart (PDF) depicting the proper placement of traction devices for all vehicles.

Chain Requirement Levels

During the winter months, motorists may encounter traction chain controls in the mountain areas within California. When chain controls are established, signs will be posted along the road indicating the type of requirement. There are Three Levels of Chain Requirements in California:

  • Requirement 1 (R-1) : Chains are required on all vehicles except passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks under 6,000 pounds gross weight and equipped with snow tires on at least two drive wheels. Chains must be carried by vehicles using snow tires. All vehicles towing trailers must have chains on one drive axle. Trailers with brakes must have chains on at least one axle.
  • Requirement 2 (R2) : Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four-wheel/all-wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. NOTE: (Four-wheel/all-wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas.)
  • Requirement 3 (R3) : Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles, with no exceptions.

Truckers see our Truck Chain Requirements page .

R-1 and R-2 are the most common conditions. A highway will often be closed before an R-3 condition is imposed. Some local areas may use variations of these designations. You must follow the directions on the signs posted for chain controls or any instructions given by Caltrans or CHP personnel at chain control checkpoints, even if these are at variance with broadcast road condition reports or information contained herein.

1 Snow-tread Tires: The California Vehicle Code, Section 558 defines a snow-tread tire as follows, “A ‘Snow-tread tire’ is a tire which has a relatively deep and aggressive tread pattern compared with a conventional passenger tread pattern.” Snow-tread tires can be identified by examining the sidewall of the tire where the letters MS, M/S, M+S or the words MUD AND SNOW have been stamped into the sidewall.

2 Tire Traction Devices: The California Vehicle Code, Section 605 defines tire traction devices as follows: “Tire Traction Devices are devices or mechanisms having a composition and design capable of improving vehicle traction, braking and cornering ability upon snow or ice-covered surfaces. Tire traction devices shall be constructed and assembled to provide sufficient structural integrity and to prevent accidental detachment from vehicles. Tire traction devices shall, at the time of manufacture or final assembly, bear a permanent impression indicating the name, initials or trademark of the assembling company or primary manufacturer and the country in which the devices were manufactured or assembled in final form.”

The full, searchable version of the California Vehicle Code is available at Leginfo , the website for California Legislative Information.

Please note: The California Department Of Transportation (Caltrans) reserves the right to prevent any vehicle from entering a chain control area when it is determined the vehicle will experience difficulty in safely traveling the area.

Please be aware that the Cal Trans Information below and on the App you have on your phone is NOT REAL TIME! There can be up to an hour delay.

Winter Driving Tips – On Your Way to Mammoth Lakes

Here in Mammoth Lakes, we get Mammoth Snow Falls.  Driving in all that snow is accomplished with the advice below and experience.

In Mammoth Lakes, we are blessed with a Snow Removal Team that operates around the clock to keep Mammoth clear and drivable just about every day of the year.

If you are all new to this you just need to get snow smart and this section will help you in the area of winter snow driving.

Bridgestone/Firestone worked with IMSA and SCCA championship-winning race car driver Peter Cunningham (also a three-time national ice driving champion), to develop these tips for safe winter driving.

During the winter months, keep abreast of weather reports in your area.  If snow or ice is predicted, make plans to leave early or arrive later.  An alarm clock set to an earlier time can be a good friend in helping you avoid difficulties.

If you can move a night trip to daylight hours, do so. Not only is visibility better, but if your vehicle is stalled, you are more likely to receive prompt assistance during the daytime.

Prepare your vehicle for winter driving; use this checklist as a guideline:

1. Check windshield wiper blades to make sure they work properly. In some areas, snow blades are an effective alternative to conventional wiper blades.

2. Have your mechanic test the anti-freeze/coolant to provide the correct level of protection required in your driving area.

3. Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Underinflation can reduce the gripping action of tires because the tread will not meet the road surface as it was designed to.  Overinflation has the same effect.

4. If you live in areas where snow and ice are certainties of winter driving, don’t depend on all-season tires. Instead, install snow tires. Snow tires are made of softer components and have a unique tread design that provides better traction and road-gripping abilities.

5. Keep your gas tank at least half-full. The extra volume can help reduce moisture problems within your fuel system. It also adds helpful weight to your vehicle.

6. In rear-wheel drive vehicles, extra weight in the trunk or truck bed may be helpful. Use care– unsecured weight can shift while you are moving or if you have to stop suddenly. Bags of sand can provide weight and, if sprinkled on the ice, sand helps provide traction.

Before you leave your driveway, scrape the ice and snow from every window and the exterior rearview mirrors, not just a small patch on the windshield. Don’t forget to remove snow from headlights and brake lights.

Try to remove ice and snow from your shoes before getting in your vehicle. As they melt, they create moisture build-up, causing windows to fog on the inside. You can reduce this fogging by turning the air recirculation switch to the OFF position. This brings in drier, fresh air. You can also run your air conditioner which serves as a dehumidifier for a few minutes.

You and your passengers should all use safety belts, both lap, and shoulder straps. Pull them snugly to ensure they work properly.

Adjust head rests. Rear-end collisions are common in winter driving and a properly-adjusted headrest can prevent or reduce neck injuries.

Before you shift into gear, plan the best route to your destination. Avoid hills, high congestion areas, and bridges if possible.

Although your radio can provide helpful traffic information, it can also be a distraction for some drivers. Since driving is more a mental skill than a physical skill, you may want to keep it turned off.

Don’t use a cellular phone when driving on ice or snow. Even if you have a hands-free model, you need to concentrate on driving, not on a telephone conversation.

Drive slowly and remember that posted speed limits identify the maximum speed allowed when weather conditions are ideal. Law enforcement agencies can write citations to motorists driving the posted speed limit if weather conditions warrant a slower speed. Be more alert to the actions of other drivers.

Anticipate cars coming from side streets and put extra distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. If someone is too close behind you, don’t speed up; slow down or let them go around you.

To make sure other drivers see you, always drive with your lights on. At night, in fog and heavy snow conditions, low beams may be more effective than high beams.

Keep a light touch on the brakes. Even with anti-lock braking systems (sometimes called ABS), you should apply light pressure to avoid locking the brakes and causing a skid. Pumping the brake pedal should be smooth action, going from light to firm in a gradual move. Tiptoe to slow is a good motto for winter drivers.

Keep both hands on the wheel and keep the wheel pointed to where you want your car to go. While it may sound overly simple, it could help you in a skid. While manual transmissions may provide greater control to assist with braking, be careful when using downshifting as a way to slow the vehicle. Gear changes, particularly abrupt ones, can upset a vehicle’s balance and cause a skid to occur, especially in turns.

Keep your vehicle stocked with simple emergency equipment in case you do get stalled or have an accident. Consider keeping these items in your vehicle:

– blanket or extra clothes – a candle with matches – snacks – beverages (never alcohol) – flares – C. B. radio, cellular phone or ham radio – a small shovel – flashlight – windshield scraping device – tow rope – bag of sand or cat litter for traction – long jumper cables (for more on building a winter emergency kit, click here.)

If you do have trouble, run the engine only briefly to run the heater, not continuously. Carbon monoxide can accumulate more easily in a non-moving vehicle.

Severe engine damage may also occur if the motor runs for long periods when the vehicle is not in motion. Warming up a car prior to travel is a common practice, but most engines really don’t need more than a minute at most to circulate oil to all internal parts. Check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for information about your engine.   (source: tiresafety.com) Here are some great links to more on driving in Winter.

Why you should drive California's scenic Highway 395

A road trip along California’s Hwy 395 from Lake Tahoe to Death Valley will take your breath away © Mark Read / Lonely Planet

US Highway 395 is California ’s backbone. Running east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, it’s also a road of superlatives: highest, lowest, hottest, deepest, oldest – the 395 passes close by a whole host of -ests. And then there are the ghost towns, living towns, ski resorts, tufa formations, film locations and more.

Yet for all its many attractions, it’s relatively unexplored, especially compared to California’s other big name draws. It takes about four days to get a good feel for the region so join us on a north-south, semi-secret, always spectacular road trip.

A map of California highlights Hwy 395 running north-to-southeast from Lake Tahoe

Day one: Lake Tahoe

Start your adventure in Tahoe , a year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts, with skiing in winter and just about every other activity the rest of the year (the east shore’s Flume Trail is a must for mountain bikers). The lake is the calm centerpiece of the action, famous as the largest alpine lake in North America and for its amazingly clear water – thanks to its height (6225ft above sea level) and the water’s depth (1644ft in places) algae can’t grow here, allowing unparalleled underwater views.

From a high vantage point, a forest, fallen tree, beach and the blue expanse of California's Lake Tahoe spread out below

Stay and eat:  For easy access to the 395 stay in South Lake Tahoe at Basecamp Hotel . Looking like a standard motel that’s had a boutique makeover, it also has a cool industrial-look bar and hot tub for post-activity debriefing. For eating options, book in advance for Cafe Fiore  because its superb Italian food is no secret. Or for solid American cooking head to Evans or the Beacon Bar & Grill , both west of town on the way to not-to-be-missed Emerald Bay.

Tufa towers, columns of salt deposits, mark the shoreline of Mono Lake in California

Day two: Tahoe to Mammoth Lakes

Two hours south of Tahoe, on a side, not fully paved road off the 395, you’ll find Bodie , a mining ghost town with (allegedly) real ghosts. Take a self-guided tour with the map from the small museum, peering into homes eerily still filled with their last owner’s belongings. Or go on a guided tour to gain access to otherwise closed-off buildings.

Just 45 minutes south is Mono (pronounced moh-no) Lake . Head to the South Tufa Area where you can learn more about the weird, tower-like limestone formations known as tufa (created by the action of the lake’s water with the salts in it), the billions of tiny shrimp that call the lake home, and, if you’re here in autumn, the millions of migrating birds who feast on the shrimp and flies.

From Mono Lake it’s a 30-minute drive to Mammoth Lakes , regional hub, famous ski resort and a great place to spend the night.

The sun shines behind a green road sign designating Hwy 395 in California and pointing to Bishop to the left and Lee Vining to the right.

Stay and eat:  Time it right (it’s generally only open in the evenings) and Mono Inn , on the 395 just north of Lee Vining, will give you one of the most memorable meals-with-a-view you’ll have along the whole route. For sleeping, Mammoth Lakes has plenty of decent, alpine-style options including Tamarack Lodge . For an evening of fine food and fun, nowhere in town beats Mammoth Rock ‘n’ Bowl , a bowling alley/arcade downstairs with an excellent, French-influenced restaurant upstairs.

A waterfall gushes down a rocky cliff

Day three: Mammoth Lakes to Lone Pine

Start your day with a short detour west to Minaret Vista , a stunning panorama taking in a large swath of the Sierra Nevada – imagine the very different reaction that early settlers would have had when faced with this daunting natural barrier. Then drive, hike or bike around Mammoth’s eponymous lakes and check out the curious basalt columns of the Devil’s Postpile.

Back on the 395, it’s only 100 miles to Lone Pine but there’s plenty to see and do on the way. Stop at Bishop for any supplies you might need and make the side trip to Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest to see trees that are the oldest living things on earth – some have been around for 5000 years.

Just before you reach Lone Pine , be sure to call in at the Manzanar National Historic Site , a Japanese internment camp from WWII. The story told here, of how thousands of Japanese Americans were seen as a security threat and forcibly moved from the coast to live in the harsh desert environment, is an overlooked and controversial episode in the country’s history.

Bunks and belongings are staged at Manzanar National Historic Site, one of ten camps where 110,000 Japanese American citizens were interned.

Arriving in Lone Pine it’s tempting (and you should definitely give in to temptation in this instance) to take Whitney Portal Road as it winds up thousands of feet to the trailhead for Mt Whitney itself. The drive goes past the Alabama Hills , a popular film location for dozens of movies and TV shows thanks to its varied landscapes.

The hike up the highest peak in the lower 48 states is straightforward – the path, opened in 1904, had to be easy enough for mules carrying building materials for the Smithsonian Institution shelter at the summit, constructed to observe a transit of Venus – but obtaining the permit for the climb is not quite so simple: there’s a lottery held each year to restrict numbers. Whether you have a permit or not, it’s worth the drive up here for the views on the way, the fresh mountain air, and the chance to eat and pick up souvenirs (and tales of the trail) at the Whitney Portal Store .

Two hikers with backpacks and poles ascend Mt Whitney in California with snow-capped mountains all around

Down in Lone Pine, the Museum of Western Film History delves more deeply into the area’s connections with shows like The Lone Ranger and movies such as  Django Unchained . The scenery around the town has doubled as everywhere from India to Spain – pick up a locations map from the museum to explore more.

Stay and eat:  The Whitney Portal Hostel & Hotel (run by the same people who run the store at the trailhead) is the best place to stay in town, with both dorm beds and motel-style rooms available – ask for one with a view of the mountain. Just along the road is Lone Pine’s best place to eat, Seasons , serving up well-cooked, hearty dishes.

A valley of white salt flats surrounded by gray rocky hills and mountains. The sun is setting in the distance

Day four: Lone Pine to Death Valley

Leaving the Sierra Nevada and the 395 behind, it’s time to hit Death Valley , notorious as the hottest place on earth: 134°F (56.6°C) was recorded here in 1913. It’s also the largest US national park outside Alaska. The lowest point in North America, Badwater Basin, is here too, an area of strikingly white salt flats sitting at 282ft below sea level.

Along with Badwater, it’s worth visiting Zabriskie Point to see the erosion-carved rocks that appear to ripple across the landscape. To cool off, head up to Dante’s View where the rewards are not just lower temperatures (you’re at nearly 5000ft here) but also the chance to end your trip with a view of the contiguous US’ highest point, Mt Whitney, in the distance, and North America’s lowest point, Badwater Basin, below you. Have your camera ready.

Stay and eat:  There are three main sleeping and eating areas in the park: Panamint Springs ; Stovepipe Wells ; and The Oasis at Death Valley . Most accommodation options are of the classier motel variety. For a relaxed setting, the Toll Road Restaurant has filling fare, as does Panamint Springs Resort. Grab a refreshing beer to toast the end of your trip along the highway of superlatives.

Your Highway 395 Road Trip Itinerary: Everything You Need to Plan a Trip

Eastern California’s Highway 395 deserves much more attention as a top vacation destination. Sure, it doesn’t have the showy seascapes of the Pacific Coast Highway, but hiding in the shadows of the Eastern Sierras are some amazing landscapes, vast acres of pine forest and some pretty funky geology. Which is why this drive is tops on our list of the best scenic drives in CA . This five 5-day Highway 395 road trip will give you everything you need for a full itinerary packed with the best of the Eastern Sierras.

I’ve lived in California for decades and been to the Eastern Sierras a number of times, but it took while for it to work its magic on me. It wasn’t until a visit last fall that my feelings changed from admiring affection to full blown love. I had some free time and an itch to fire up the van. So, I was able to perfectly time my visit for fall color. Those yellow leaves slapped me in the face, waking me up to what’s amazing about California’s Highway 395 corridor.

Highway 395 Alabama Hills hiker on rocks

This itinerary aims to help you find that moment of amazement as well. It covers 227 miles of Highway 395, from just south of Carson City to where it ends in Southern California near Victorville. You could cover that mileage in 4 hours, but don’t be in a hurry. This itinerary is a five day road trip from top to bottom. It assumes that you are starting in SF and ending in LA, although you could do it in the reverse order, or as an out-and-back. If you don’t live in California and are flying into Reno, check out this airport guide , which includes information rental cars and which carriers fly into Reno.

You can adjust this 395 road trip to fit a 3-4 day timeframe, but you’ll need to make some hard choices about what you have time for.

Highway 395 FAQ

Let’s get started with some logistics about how and when to plan your trip.

When’s the Best Time for a Highway 395 Road Trip?

The road is open year round, unless there is a major snow storm. Different seasons offer different opportunities for what to do along Highway 395.

The best time for a 395 road trip is in the Fall. The Eastern Sierras are covered in a lot of well-preserved National Forest and when the trees are turning, the whole western side of 395 lights up. Use our Eastern Sierras fall color guide for more info, but early October is a good bet. Fall is nice because the summer crowds have died down, but the Forest Service trails and campgrounds are still open.

Summer is a great time if you like hiking and water sports, but weekends and holidays can be crazy busy, so book ahead. Also, we don’t recommend the Death Valley side trip in the summer because the temps are positively volcanic.

Spring wildflower season starts in late May, but if it’s a late snow year, many of the hiking trails and campgrounds won’t be open yet.

If you ski or snowboard, you could do a winter road trip that includes skiing/boarding in Lake Tahoe and Mammoth along with some of the other 395 attractions. But hiking will be limited and you won’t be able to transit over the Tioga or Sonora passes.

Where to Start & End a 395 Road Trip?

Highway 395 actually runs from California’s border with Oregon all the way down to Victorville. But this itinerary recommends the best scenic bits on a 227 mile stretch that starts just south of Carson City. This itinerary is also a great routing if you are driving from San Francisco to Las Vegas (or vice versa). If you want to fly and drive, use our guide for finding the closest Eastern Sierra airport .

You can also combine it with some of our other suggested CA road trip ideas for a longer trip.

Is Highway 395 Safe to Drive?

Yes, as long as you are a safe driver. For much of the route described here, 395 is a four lane divided highway. Exits for many of the more popular stops, such as Mammoth Lakes, have an dedicated ramp or left turn lane. There are also quite a few frontage roads that you can use. Once you get south of Lone Pine, the road downshifts to two lanes.

That said, there are things that you need to be mindful of. Check Cal Trans for snowy road conditions, watch out for fast moving semis, and stay in the slow lane, especially if you are in an RV. Also, note that the highway is not well lit at night.

Should I Pre-Book Accommodation?

For motels and Airbnb’s : If your road trip occurs over a weekend or holiday in the summer, absolutely pre-book.

For RV parks : If you are RVing in the summer, some of the private RV parks may have on-the-fly availability. In the spring/fall, you shouldn’t have a problem. In the winter, many of the smaller RV parks are closed.

For camping : For weekends/holidays in the summer, you should pre-book . Many Forest Service campgrounds are first-come or they reserve a few spots for last minute campers, but that works best if you can get there before 10am on a Friday. Some of the canyons managed by the Forest Service allow disbursed camping.

What is Highway 395’s Elevation?

The elevation on this trip varies wildly, which is also why timing is so dependent upon the season. Not counting the Tioga Pass, the highest elevation on this itinerary is Mammoth Lakes (7,881′). But things literally go downhill from there. Lee Vining is 6781′ and by the time you get down to Lone Pine, the elevation is 3,700′. And if you do the Death Valley side trip suggested below, you bottom out at -279′.

Highway 395 Road Trip Itinerary

Here’s the 5 day itinerary for your 395 travel. Each day has 2-5 cool things do do and see as well as at least one scenic detour that gets you slightly off 395.

Day 1: San Francisco to Bridgeport

286 miles | 5-7 hours of drive time

The fastest route from SFO to the start of this trip is via South Lake Tahoe and Carson City. If you take that route, you can even spend some extra time doing part of the scenic drive around Lake Tahoe . Alternatively, you can tack on some road trip time in Yosemite .

If you are traveling in the summer or fall, consider the slower road over Sonora Pass (which goes through Twain Harte) or Tioga Pass (which cuts through Yosemite). Both have gobsmackingly beautiful mountain scenery with forest, windy roads and scenic pullouts. Don’t do Sonora Pass if you have an extra large RV, because you won’t make the hairpin turns at the eastern end. Tioga requires the National Park fee.

Once in Bridgeport, head over to Travertine Hot Springs . There are tons of hot springs along this route. Travertine is nice because it’s fairly easy to find, has multiple pools, insane views and is clothing-optional.

hIghway 395 Travertine Hot springs.

Where to Stay in Bridgeport

If you want something a bit funky, you can rent a night in a covered wagon at the  Virginia Creek Settlement motel .

Ghost town of Bodie: Swazey Hotel building ruin

Day 2: Bridgeport to Lee Vining (or June Lake)

25 miles | 25 minutes (+ 15 minutes to June Lake)

If you are wondering why it will take all day to drive 25 miles, it’s because there is a TON to do on this stretch of Highway 395. Your first stop should be Bodie State Park . This historic site is one of California’s best ghost towns . It boomed from 1882 to 1932 and is a well-preserved relic of our gold rush. Visit our Bodie Ghost town guide for all of the details and plan to spend at least 1.5 hours there. The guide also suggests two scenic off road detours as an alternative to the regular road. These include either Aurora Canyon from Bridgeport or Pole Line Road and Goat Ranch into Lee Vining.

Your next stop is the scenic June Lake Loop . This lovely drive includes Grant, Silver, Gull and June Lakes. You can take a dip in Grant Lake or take a hike to nearby Parker Lake or Agnew Lake . Or simply stop into town for a cold one at June Lake Brewing . Then double back toward Lee Vining and take Highway 120 east to the southern Mono Lake viewpoint . Mono Lake is worth visiting for its crazy limestone tufa towers, which stagger upright out of the lake like crusty white zombies. The south end viewpoint will get you the closest to the tufas and it’s best to go at sunset if you can swing it.

Grab dinner at the Whoa Nellie Deli , which is the best food you will ever find at a gas station. Then bunk down in Lee Vining or back in June Lake.

Read More : Get the full downlow on all CA parks with our complete California State Parks list (with map).

Highway 395 Grant Lake in the fall

Where to Stay in Lee Vining (or June Lake)

There are a number of servicable (but not fancy) motels in both Lee Vining and June Lake. Check reviews and book here .

Mammoth Loop road. pine trees

Day 3: Lee Vining to Bishop

65 miles | 1 hour

Your third day starts off with a detour. Rather than going directly to Mammoth Lakes, take the “ Mammoth Scenic Loop “, which is 8 miles before the main turnoff. This is a quiet, pretty road that winds through pine forest. You can further detour down Dry Creek Road for a short hike to the Inyo Craters , or just carry on into Mammoth Lakes .

Take the Minaret Summit road to the Devil’s Postpile National Monument . This pile of basalt columns was created 100,000 years ago when a flow cooled and cracked into multi-sided columns. These same volcanic forces have also created the many hot springs in along the highway 395 corridor. There is a short <1 mile hike to get to the postpile and an additional 5 mile roundtrip hike to visit the Rainbow Falls .

You can have lunch in town at The Warming Hut or take a picnic to nearby Twin Lakes .

If you want some more crazy geology, your next stop should be the Hot Creek Geologic attraction off 395 east of the Mammoth airport. This is NOT a swimmable hot spring, but it’s worth visiting for the bubbling brew of geysers and pools.

Now, on to Convict Lake . This lovely alpine lake is named after a bruhaha that ensued after a group of escaped prisoners hid out there. It’s worth visiting because it’s not too far off the main road and it’s very pretty. There is an easy 2.5 mile loop trail around the lake. The southeast side has some nice beaches for fishing and swimming and you can rent kayaks and boats from the local concessionaire. In addition, the tree leaves on this lake really pop in the fall. Get more info in our full guide to Convict lake , which include info on additional hikes, where to camp and how to rent a boat or kayak.

If the lake is too crowded, then we suggest going a little further south and heading up McGee Creek . You can do as much or as little as you want of the 3.5 mile McGee Creek trail. This area is particularly nice in the late spring for wildflowers or for leaf peeping in the fall.

Now, it’s time for another detour on your way down to Bishop. Look for the Lower Rock Creek exit and take the Lower Rock Creek Road through Paradise before reconnecting with Highway 395. There aren’t any attractions along this road, it’s just a quiet diversion from the highway. For good eats, check out the Erick Schat’s Bakkerÿ or the Holy Smoke Texas Barbeque .

Mammoth Lakes Devil's Postpile

Where to Stay in Bishop

Bishop is the largest town that sits right on the highway and it’s well-served by plenty of mid-range motels like Days Inn, Travelodge and Comfort Inn. Check for deals and book here . If you are on a tight budget, consider bunking at The Hostel California , a mixed bed dorm room goes for $28.

Bristlecone Pine Forest. gnarled tree

Day 4: Bishop to Lone Pine

57 Miles | 1 hour

We have a whole guide that outlines a lot of fun things to do in Bishop — both in town and nearby. So check that out if you are going to be hanging around in the area. We also have a detailed guide for Lone Pine , which elaborates upon some of what is listed below.

Before leaving Bishop, you may want to check out either the Laws Railroad museum (if you are a train nerd) or the Paiute-Shoshone Cultural Center (if you are into Native American culture).

Then head up to the Bristlecone Pine Forest , which is managed by the Forest Service. These gnarled, tortured pine trees are the oldest in the world and can live up to 4,000 years old. The short version is to go up the Shulman Grove visitor’s center and do the Methuselah Trail. The longer version is to go 13 miles further up the dirt road to the Patriarch grove.

The next stop is back down Highway 395 at the Manzanar National Historic Park . Our xenophobic reflex to the bombing of Pearl Harbor resulted in the imprisonment of 11,000 Japanese Americans at Manzanar. This National Historic Park remembers that tragedy with guided tours and exhibits.

Today’s detour goes up the Whitney Portal Road , which is just west of Lone Pine. This will take you an additional 13 miles up to the Mount Whitney trailhead, which is only for experienced mountain hikers, but the drive is lovely.

For good eats, check out the Castro taco truck or the Alabama Hills Cafe .

Manzanar Historic National Park internment camp

Where to Stay in Lone Pine

Once again, there is an assortment of basic motels in Lone Pine. The Dow Villa Motel gets good marks for it’s central location in town.

Day 5: Lone Pine to LA

213 miles | 4 hours

Stop into the Western Film Museum to check out the memorabilia on the westerns that were filmed in the area. Then head into the Alabama Hills to see the filming locations for yourself. Alabama Hills is very reminiscent of Utah with its red, rocky landscape. You can drive the movie loop trail or take a short hike around the popular mobius arch. Here’s a BLM map of the area .

Head south toward LA. If you have time, detour down Highway 14 to Red Rock Canyon State Park . This is another one of those feels-like-Utah landscapes with spires of eroding red sandstone. Take the easy Hagen Canyon Nature trail or the nearby Red Cliffs trail .

Artist's Palette Drive in Death Valley National park

Day 5-7 Death Valley Alternative

If you can swing it, we recommend adding Death Valley onto your Highway 395 road trip. If you like this kind of spare desert landscape in the southeastern Sierras, you’ll love Death Valley. It has sand dunes, salty lake beds, volcano craters, ghost towns and miles of views.

For more information, start with our mega guide for Death Valley that includes practical planning tips, routing suggestions, accommodations and top things to do. Alternatively you can build a trip from this 2-day Death Valley itinerary . Or if you are short on time, but still want to see Death Valley, get a very early start and use this 1-day itinerary . The instructions are from Las Vegas, so ignore the driving directions, but otherwise use the suggested routing once in the park. Top spots on both itineraries are Ryolite Ghost town , Badwater Basin , Zabriskie Point and Mesquite Dunes .

This add-on is best done from October to April. You can also get some inspiration and trivia with these fun facts about Death Valley . If are you camping, here’s our guide for the best Death Valley campgrounds .

If you are returning to SF from Death Valley , use our guide to help you find some cool stops along the way.

Road Trip Planning Essentials

Preparing your car.

Start with an old school map. Mobile signals are very spotty on 395 and Google Maps won’t always work there. We love the Benchmark California Road Atlas . It’s very detailed and shows both paved and dirt roads as well as state parks and some campsites.

If you need to rent a car, get your best rental car deal by comparing  prices with Rentalcars.com .

If you are driving your own car, don’t forget to check your oil and tire pressure before you leave and you should also invest in roadside assistance. It comes with a AAA membership, most new car purchases or a credit card like the American Express Rewards Gold Card. You should also purchase a  roadside safely kit  which includes things like a warning triangle, jumper cables, glass breaker, multi tool, cable ties and small first aid kit. These kits also make a thoughtful, if tragically practical Christmas or birthday gift.

Be sure to stock your car with a drinks, snacks and lunch supplies. Consider getting an electric car cooler , which is great for keeping lunch stuff cold without becoming soggy from melted ice. I recommend taking mix of:  trail mix ,  energy bars , individual cheese slices (or string cheese), crackers, pretzels, soda, water and candy bars.

“Whither goest thou, America, in thy shiny car in the night?” -Jack Kerouac

Why Jack, we are going to the Eastern Sierras of course. While there, we will be rewarded with alpine lakes, pine forest, rock formations, weird geology and cool attractions on Highway 395. After reading this full article, you can see why it’s worth devoting at least 5 days to your California 395 road trip. Have fun and goest thou soon in thy shiny car.

Great guide, thanks!

Thanks for the great site. I’m organizing a geology focused hiking/camping trip in the area, and you provided valuable information. I haven’t finalized my itinerary yet, but I’m pretty sure that Devil’s Postpile will be on it.

Is this route dog friendly ?

This whole area is SOOOOOO dog friendly. If you drive over Tioga pass through Yosemite, the trails there are not dog-friendly. But once you get to 395 itself, nearly all of the trails and lakes are on Forest Service land, which is always dog-friendly. Dogs are allowed at Bodie Ghost town (but not in the buildings) and the same for Manzanar. The Alabama Hills are BLM land, which is also dog-friendly. If you do Mono lake, stay on the trails, as the rocks are really sharp.

Highway 395 Road Trip (40+ Stops): Hikes, Food, Fossils & Lakes

travel conditions on 395

Old Fashioned Soda’s at Randsburg General Store (15-30 minutes)

Randsburg 16

The town that time forgot, Randsburg itself is located 2 minutes off the road, but since the road does not go straight through it, it does not receive a lot of visitors. The main little strip of town is a fun place for a stop, especially if you like antiques. The soda fountain at the general store even uses phosphates like in the old days to make a mean lime soda.

  • Address: 35 Butte Ave, Randsburg, CA 93554

Indian Well’s Brewing Company (15 minutes)

indian wells-1

At a short two miles from the highway, Indian Brewing Company is a fun stop. This brewery not only makes beer but they also make all of the soda for the company Rocket Fizz. There are over 120 sodas here ranging from Root Beer and Cream Soda to Churro Soda and even Ranch Dressing Soda. It’s a fun stop for the whole family if you like weird stuff like this.

  • Location: 2565 CA-14, Inyokern, CA 93527

Hubcap Capital of the World (10 minutes)

hubcap capital-1

This blink and you will miss it spot in Pearsonville is home to the 25-foot tall women and the sign designating it as the hubcap capital of the world. I don’t know much about the history, but it is a fun spot to take a photo.

  • Address: 3 Pearson Rd, Inyokern, CA 93527

Fossil Falls (30 minutes to an hour)

fossil falls

This stop is one of the places that everyone sees the sign for but no one stops at. It is a fantastic piece of history though and a great place to explore for 30 minutes. The ground is covered in volcanic rock and while there is no water flowing for the “falls” the stark contrast it presents with what is around it is enough for a great stop.

  • Location: Fossil Falls Access Rd, California (general location, no exact address)

Twilight Zone House (5 minutes)

highway 395 update-6

This short stop doesn’t have much to see, but it is still fun to take a picture of the house that was prominently featured in an episode of the Twilight Zone. It is in the South outskirts of the town of Orlancha right near the town of Grant.

  • Location: Grant, California 93549

Statues of Highway 395 (15 minutes)

395 Sculptures 11

If you want to see the statues, then make sure you keep your eyes peeled to the left side of the road as you drive North. There are no signs for them, but they are big enough that you will see them if you are looking. The statues all have some sort of social meaning, and they are really well made.

  • Address: North of Grant in the South part of Olancha, no exact address

Gus Fresh Jerky (10 minutes)

highway 395 update-1

No doubt you have seen the signs for Gus’s Fresh Jerky over the last 200 miles. They do a great job of marketing to you every chance they get, and it does make you hungry for some jerky. I will say that I was impressed with the jerky when I had it. It was moist and full of flavor, which leads me to pick up a bag pretty much each time I drive past.

  • Location: 580 S Hwy 395 Olancha, CA 93549

Lemon House (5 minutes)

Lemon House-1

Another fun roadside stop. Not much to see here either other than the lemon house itself. I have never seen any people here, but I always like to jump out for a photo with the house and the dinosaur.

  • Address: Near- 217 Lake St Cartago, CA 93549

Cottonwood Charcoal Kilns (20 minutes)

highway 395 update-2

Right before you reach the town of Lone Pine you will see a historical marker sign for the turn out for the Cottonwood Charcoal Kilns. I highly recommend taking it and driving down the one-mile dirt road (I did it in a 2WD car) to see the historic kilns. There are only two left, but they are beautiful and well maintained. Be sure to keep it that way.

  • Location: Keep your eyes peeled for the National Landmark sign.

Lone Pine Film  Museum (30 minutes – 1 hour)

395 roadtrip 2

If you are a fan of cowboy movies, then you cannot drive this road without a stop here. The museum has so many great artifacts from the decades of filming that happened in the hills outside of Lone Pine. Even if you do not love cowboy movies, there are a lot of other movies that have been filmed here as well, such as Gladiator and Tremors.

  • Address: 701 S Main St, Lone Pine, CA 93545

Alabama Hills Cafe (45 minutes)

395 roadtrip 1

One of my favorite places to eat on Highway 395 is the Alabama Hills Cafe. This small restaurant in the shadow of Mt Whitney provides great food and a lot of it. I especially recommend the pie.

  • Address: 111 W Post St, Lone Pine, CA 93545

Alabama Hills (1 – 2 hours)

travel conditions on 395

The Alabama Hills are a collection of unique rock formations at the base of the Eastern Sierras. They have been in hundreds of movies over the years and are a place full of dirt roads that you can easily get lost exploring. I love spending time here and searching for arches while climbing rock formations.

Mobius Arch (30 minutes)

alabama hills 1

The most well-known of the arches in the Alabama Hills is the Mobius Arch. It perfectly frames Mt Whitney and is much-loved by photographers. It is accessible via a dirt road and a short hike and is one of the few places in the hills that has a sign.

Manzanar Internment Camp (1 hour)

395 roadtrip 3

The Manzanar Internment Camp represents a dark spot in US history and the Central California area. It is a must visit on the road as it gives you a much better understanding of the area itself and the camps that existed here.

  • Address: Manzanar Reward Rd, California

Independence Courthouse (5 minutes)

Independence courthouse-1

This famous courthouse is on the National Register of Historic Sites and was built in 1921. It is still in use and is the courthouse for Inyo County. It is a beautiful building and worth the stop to see for a few minutes.

  • Address: 168 N Edwards St, Independence, CA 93526

Eastern Sierra Museum

highway 395 update-5

If you are a fan of California’s history like I am, then be sure to check out the Eastern Sierra Museum. This museum is one of the better ones along this drive as it has a ton of information on the people who made the area what it is today, from Native Americans to authors. There is also a large outdoor area which has different pieces of historic equipment as well.

  • Location: 155 N Grant St, Independence, CA 93526

Mt Whitney Fish Hatchery

highway 395 update-4

North of the town of Independence sits a beautiful and historic fish hatchery. The building itself is a great spot for photography as it has a gorgeous pond in front of it with a lot of fish. When it is open, you can go into the hatchery and see the process the fish go through and when it isn’t open you can still walk around the grounds and have a picnic at the picnic tables.

  • Location: Oak Creek Rd, Independence, CA 93526

Copper Top BBQ (30 minutes)

Copper Top BBQ-1

Voted the best restaurant in the country by Yelp in 2014, Copper Top BBQ is a fantastic place for a meal. From the pulled pork to the tri-tip, everything is amazing here. It is only open from 12PM – 5PM though, or until they run out of meat, and it is closed on Monday and Tuesday.

  • Address: 310 N Main St, Big Pine, CA 93513

Ancient Bristlecone Forest

highway 395 update-3

This is one of those stops that you easily need a half-day to a full day to see. Since it is about 45 minutes off the highway, I would not even consider doing it if you are in a rush though. The area is amazing,  with tons of unique trees, some that are over 4,000 years old. It is one of my favorite stops along the drive for photography.

  • Read about the Discovery Trail or the Patriarch Grove
  • Location: Schulman Grove, California

North Fork of Big Pine

big-pine-north-fork-lakes-38

If you have some time to do a long day hike or a backpacking trip, then grab a permit to hike the North Fork of Big Pine. This area is one of the most beautiful in all of California with blue glacial lakes and massive vistas. There is even a glacier you can see but you would need to backpack for that.

  • Read about the backpacking here and the glacier here (don’t go without a permit)
  • Location: Big Pine Creek Campground, Big Pine, CA

Bishop Creek (2 hours)

Bishop Creek 43

There is no way to see all that Bishop Creek has to offer in a few hours, or even a few days, but it is a great place to drive through on a road trip. You can see high altitude lakes, waterfalls, and amazing fall colors if you go at the right time.

Erick Schat’s Bakery (30 minutes)

erick schats bakery

One of the most well-known spots on Highway 395 is Erick Schat’s Bakery in Bishop. This famous restaurant, home to the sheepherders bread, is a great stop for lunch on the drive. Even if you do not want a full meal you can still stop in for some sweets as they have a pretty amazing selection.

  • Address: 763 N Main St, Bishop, CA 93514

Law’s Train Museum (1-2 hours)

Laws Museum-1

This is one of the better museums I have been to in the state. It has a whole towns worth of recreated houses and a full nine car train in the middle. The museum is dedicated to the town and what it was like when the train actually ran through here. It also has a fantastic and interactive gold mining exhibit that they run on Wednesday and Thursday.

  • Address: 395 Silver Canyon Rd, Bishop, CA 93514

Convict Lake (1 hour)

Convict Lake Loop 24

Another place where you need more time than just a few hours, Convict Lake is a beautiful, accessible gateway into the Sierras. It has a massive lake and tons of hiking trails that lead into the backcountry. There is a lodge and camping available as well.

Wild Willy’s Hot Springs (30-45 minutes)

Hot Springs-1

One of the many hot springs located off Benton Crossing Road , South of the airport, Wild Willy’s is relatively easy to get to. After driving two miles down a dirt road, there is a small parking lot that leads to an elevated wooden walkway and eventually the hot springs. It truly is hot, and it is a fun adventure.

Crowley Lake Columns (1.5 hours)

crowley lake columns-14

While this is an awesome spot for sure, I would not even try it without 4WD. The road to it is dirt and has lots of pot holes and steep sections, plus it is really remote. If you have 4WD and are comfortable driving on sand though then it can be a cool spot.

Hot Creek Geological Area (30 minutes)

Hot Creek-1

One exit up from the hot springs is the Hot Creek Geological Area. This spot is much like what you would see in Yellowstone, albeit on a much smaller scale. There are a few bubbling sulfur pools that have a bright blue hue to them, and it is a fun stop that is easy to see and right off the highway.

  • Address: Hot Creek Hatchery Rd, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546

Devils Postpile National Monument (1 hour)

Devils Postpile 16

No doubt you have seen the Devils Postpile in pictures, this crazy geological wonder has been attracting visitors for decades. It is off 395 a decent amount but is a great stop and houses a lot of fun hikes.

Rainbow Falls (1 hour)

Rainbow Falls 11

Only a stone’s throw from Devils Postpile, Rainbow Falls is a majestic waterfall and an excellent way to get your legs moving on a road trip. The hike itself is a few miles each way to the lookout point that will give you the above view of the waterfall.

Mammoth Mountain Gondola (1 hour)

travel conditions on 395

The Mammoth Mountain Gondola is a great way to get to a high vantage point and look down on the area and the drive. You can do it in both the winter and the summer and each season has a unique charm.

Obsidian Dome

travel conditions on 395

This mountain is full of obsidian created from a volcanic blast and it is pretty crazy to see. You can drive past it or park and hike up into the dome to see all of the smooth black glass like rocks. Be sure to take an All Trails map or you will miss the turn for this spot though.

June Lake Loop

travel conditions on 395

If you have the time on your drive, the 12 mile June Lake Loop is a beautiful side trip with amazing lakes and mountains around each turn. I would not recommend it if you don’t have two hours to spare though as you will want to spend some time pulling off and taking in the views.

  • Read more about it here.

Abandoned House

travel conditions on 395

This house is a popular spot on the Highway 395 drive for photographers. It is only accessible when you are heading southbound though since it is on that side of the road. I don’t have the exact address but it is before you reach the town of Lee Vining.

Mono Lake (45 minutes)

395 roadtrip 4

The calcite formations on the South side of Mono Lake have been attracting photographers for a long time. You will see why when you get there as the formations are unlike anything you have ever seen in a lake before. They are accessed via a short walk from the parking lot and are a great place for sunset or sunrise.

Whoa Nellie Deli (30 minutes)

Whoa Nellie Deli-1

Located inside a Mobil Gas Station with a view of Mono Lake, this food establishment is extremely popular. It’s not hard to see why when you try it though as the food is better than anything you can get within 30 miles of this spot. It is a little on the pricey end but the fish tacos are fantastic, and you can’t beat the view.

  • Address: 22 Vista Point Road, Lee Vining, CA 93541

Tioga Pass (4 hours)

395 roadtrip 5

If you have time for another drive while on your road trip, make sure to turn on Tioga Pass. This back country road goes over a 10,000-foot pass and allows you to see Half Dome from the backside without hiking. It also goes past Tuolumne Meadows, which is a favorite California spot for backpacking .

Vista Point (10 minutes)

Vista Point-1

After heading up the mountain on the North side of Mono Lake, there is a pull off for a Vista Point. I highly suggest you take it as it provides a beautiful view of the entire valley below. It is one of my favorite views on the drive.

Bodie (1 – 2 hours)

Bodie-8

The ghost town of Bodie is a favorite attraction for many California visitors, but I have not made it there myself yet. It is a well-maintained piece of history that showcases what life was like in early days of California.

Travertine Hot Springs

travel conditions on 395

In Bridgeport, this set of a half-dozen hot springs is a very popular road trip stop as it is one of the easiest hot springs to access. You will probably not be alone here but it is still a very pretty spot to relax at.

Bridgeport Courthouse (5 minutes)

Bridgeport Courthouse-1

Much like the Independence Courthouse, the Bridgeport one is the main courthouse for Mono County. The beautiful Victorian architecture harkens to the creation of the town, and it was built-in 1881. It is a pretty historic building, and it is worth the stop.

  • Address: 242 Main St Bridgeport, CA 93517

Topaz Lodge Casino (45 minutes)

395 roadtrip topaz

When you make the first entrance to Nevada from CA, there is a casino right there waiting for you. If you like gambling, I imagine this being a great stop, but I have not been inside myself.

Lassen National Park (1 day)

Lassen Peak

Lastly, when the 395 comes back into California from Nevada, you are pretty close to Lassen National Park, which I highly recommend. It will take you off Highway 395 a little ways, but it is a great place to camp and spend a day as there is so much to do there.

Here are a few videos I made from my last drive on Highway 395.

Governor Lamont Announces I-95 in Norwalk Will Fully Reopen in Both Directions by 10AM Sunday

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Ned Lamont and Connecticut Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto today announced that Interstate 95 in Norwalk will be fully reopen to traffic in both directions by 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 5, 2024.

Following the major motor vehicle collision that occurred during the morning of Thursday, May 2, which shut down the highway and snarled traffic in lower Fairfield County and around Connecticut, the Connecticut Department of Transportation and its contractors got the highway fully reopened in less than 80 hours.

Work involved demolishing the Fairfield Avenue Bridge over I-95 because of the significant damage it sustained from the collision; removing tons of concrete, steel, and debris from the roadway; sweeping the road; milling; paving; and restriping pavement markings.

“It is truly amazing that in less than 80 hours from that fiery crash Thursday that shut down traffic in both directions, the highway again is fully open,”  Governor Lamont said . “It takes a village, and from the response from local and state police and fire departments to the environmental cleanup by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the demolition and rebuilding by the Connecticut Department of Transportation and contractors, everyone did their part. I am impressed by these efforts and thankful for the dedication, skill, and labor of everyone who has been involved.”

“This has been a team effort, and I can’t thank enough the CTDOT crews, contractors, and workers who spent the weekend ensuring the public could resume traveling on I-95 as soon as possible,”  Commissioner Eucalitto said . “While the roadway is open, the work continues as we are planning how and when the Fairfield Avenue Bridge will be replaced.”

While crews were working to reopen I-95, CTDOT engineers worked through the weekend to develop preliminary replacement plans of the Fairfield Avenue Bridge. Those initial designs are expected to be completed within the next two weeks.

The public is encouraged to continue utilizing  CTroads.org  for traffic alerts and roadway updates throughout Connecticut.

Cape Fear Memorial Bridge project concludes ahead of schedule, reopens this week

travel conditions on 395

The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge will reopen to traffic ahead of schedule, North Carolina Department of Transportation officials announced Tuesday morning.

After seeing partial closures over the past several months, all four lanes of the bridge will be open to vehicle traffic beginning Wednesday, May 8, around 7 p.m. Parts of the bridge have been closed for much of 2024, as work to replace the grid deck and more than 50-year-old support beams was underway.

The project was completed in phases, with the eastbound lanes of the bridge closed beginning in late January and reopening ahead of the North Carolina Azalea Festival in early April. The westbound lanes closed for repairs in April. NCDOT Division 3 Engineer Chad Kimes said crews will begin removing barricades and reopening the westbound lanes beginning May 8.

The reopening comes ahead of schedule. The contractor on the $7.1 million project, Southern Road & Bridge LLC, was set to have work completed by Memorial Day weekend. Finishing ahead of that schedule comes with an incentive bonus of $500,000, which Kimes said the contractor will receive.

Kimes, who announced his September 2024 retirement earlier this year, said this project tops the list of the most influential in his 30-plus-year career.

"I couldn't be more proud of this total team effort to do what we've done to this point today," Kimes said.

Impacted areas to soon return to pre-project conditions

The closure impacted several roads, bridges and intersections across the Wilmington area. Each of those impacted areas will soon return to preexisting conditions, Kimes said. After reopening, Kimes said, there will still be minimal work conducted, causing nightly lane closures for about 10 nights.

According to a news release from NCDOT, the barricades on 3rd Street will be removed Wednesday evening. Also on that night, traffic will be restored to its normal pattern at U.S. 421 onto U.S. 74. Restriping 3rd Street will begin Thursday evening.

Next week, on the nights of May 15-16, NCDOT officials are scheduled to restore the traffic pattern at North College Road onto Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway to its pre-project pattern.

Local leaders react

Transportation and government leaders from the region attended Tuesday's news conference celebrating the announcement and thanking NCDOT officials, local law enforcement and others for their work on this project.

"Today is a great day for Brunswick and New Hanover counties," said New Hanover County Commissioner Jonathan Barfield. "I call this a short-term pain for a long-term gain."

The project looked to extend the life of the vertical lift bridge, which was installed in 1969. Kimes said maintenance issues will persist. He anticipates the newly installed riding deck to last another 10 years.

Wilmington City Council member Luke Waddell described the occasion as "monumental."

"It's a monumental day, a monumental project, a monumental effort," Waddell said.

Brunswick County Commissioner Frank Williams thanked the members of the public for their patience and resiliency through the past few months, as did Kimes, Barfield and Waddell.

"This was an issue that affected everybody who lives in this community," Williams said. "This was not one of those things we do that doesn't affect the people we represent. This was a real issue and everybody was very afraid of how it was going to affect the community. And it wasn't as bad as it could have been, and that's because of all the people here today. But as everyone else has already said, it's also because the people of this community are resilient and they adapted and they made things work."

A Travel Warning Was Just Reissued for This Popular International Destination

Plus, other active travel advisories for american tourists right now..

Macau, China

With international travel in full bloom post-pandemic and lots of people on the move (to the point of, at times, creating overtourism issues ), it is important to read up about your destination before you actually get there. A simple Google search can go a long way, especially when it comes to government-issued travel advisories .

Among these, the US government recently reissued a travel advisory concerning Macau as well as Mainland China and Hong Kong due to "new national security legislation in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region." According to the advisory, travelers run the risk of wrongful detentions, among other things, due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws. Currently, the advisory is at level 3, meaning travelers are encouraged to "reconsider travel" in those areas.

This is not, however, the only active advisory right now. While it might not seem like it, at any given time, many countries worldwide have warnings in place for American travelers. To help you navigate international travel more seamlessly and to provide you with a better understanding of how the different types of advisory may impact your travel, we have put together a handy guide of the countries that the US State Department issued new (or updated) travel advisories for March and April. This guide will be regularly updated as more advisories are issued.

Each advisory in the list below is categorized under a different degree, highlighting the level of danger assessed by the department. Level 1 is the lowest degree and suggests you "exercise normal precautions." Level 2 warns travelers to "exercise increased precautions." Levels 3 and 4 are the highest levels, and they respectively tell travelers to "reconsider travel" and "do not travel."

For more information and to see a complete list of active travel advisories for Americans, you can visit the Department of State's website . To stay updated on travel advisories that might impact your next international trip, you can also register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).

Read on for more details on the new travel advisories for Americans as of the last two months:

The Kyrgyz Republic : Level 1

Authorities are encouraging travelers to exercise normal precautions in the Kyrgyz Republic.

However, visitors should reconsider travel to the border region with Tajikistan, as it has increased risk.

Moldova : Level 2

Travelers should exercise increased caution when traveling to Moldova due to "unresolved conflict between the breakaway region of Transnistria and the central government."

Additionally, they should reconsider travel to the Transnistria breakaway region due to "the unresolved conflict with the central government and the armed conflict in neighboring Ukraine."

Rwanda : Level 1

When traveling to Rwanda, visitors should exercise normal precautions.

However, some areas have increased risk. Travelers should exercise increased caution in the Rwanda-Burundi border due to crime, and they should reconsider travel to the Rwanda-Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) border due to armed violence.

Equatorial Guinea : Level 2

According to the authorities, travelers should exercise increased caution when traveling to Equatorial Guinea.

Cote d'Ivoire : Level 2

When traveling to Cote d'Ivoire, visitors should exercise increased caution.

Authorities, however, placed a "do not travel" advisory to the northern border region due to terrorism.

Armenia : Level 2

Travelers heading to Armenia should exercise increased caution.

Some areas have increased risk, and travelers should avoid travel to the border region with Azerbaijan.

Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza : Levels 3, 4

Due to terrorism and armed conflict, citizens should avoid traveling to Gaza.

Due to terrorism and civil unrest, travelers should reconsider travel to Israel and the West Bank.

Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau : Levels 2, 3

According to the authorities, travelers should reconsider travel to Mainland China due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws.

Additionally, for the same reason, they should exercise increased caution when traveling to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Travelers should also reconsider travel to the Macau Special Administrative Region due to a limited ability to provide emergency consular services, and they should also exercise increased caution in the area due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws.

Ecuador : Level 2

The US government is encouraging travelers to exercise increased caution in Ecuador due to civil unrest, crime, and kidnapping.

Additionally, the government placed a "do not travel" advisory for the following areas:

  • Guayaquil, south of Portete de Tarqui Avenue
  • The cities of Huaquillas and Arenillas in the province of El Oro
  • The cities of Quevedo, Quinsaloma, and Pueblo Viejo in the province of Los Rios
  • The canton of Duran, in the province of Guayas
  • Esmeraldas city and all areas north of Esmeraldas city in Esmeraldas province

Travelers should reconsider travel to these areas instead:

  • Guayaquil north of Portete de Tarqui Avenue
  • El Oro province outside the cities of Huaquillas and Arenillas
  • Los Rios province outside the cities of Quevedo, Quinsaloma, and Pueblo Viejo
  • All areas south of Esmeraldas city in Esmeraldas province
  • The provinces of Sucumbios, Manabi, Santa Elena, and Santo Domingo

Iraq : Level 4

Travelers should not travel to Iraq due to "terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, civil unrest, and Mission Iraq's limited capacity to provide support to US citizens."
