For the frequent flier, for his closet, for the outdoors enthusiast, for the gadget geek, for the self-care newbie, for the foodie, for the homebody.

But if you’re looking for something a little different, or perhaps a little unusual that will absolutely rock his travel routine for years to come, check out some of the gift ideas below. Dr. Dennis Gross’ peel pads are a cult favorite among skincare enthusiasts, and an effortless way to look refreshed and dewy after a red-eye. Clothes are a tough gift. Everybody is different, every body is different, and a lot of guys are just downright picky when it comes to what they get dressed in everyday. That being said, there are a few tricks of the trade to consider here—when gifting clothes, don’t go too big, too outré, or too outlandish. The secret is to select timeless, quintessential pieces that travel well, age well, and can be styled into any wardrobe. That’s how you’ll end up giving a gift that can find a home in literally any guy’s closet (or suitcase). Who could say no to a versatile, eco-friendly jean, or a quarter-zip sweater knit from recycled oyster shells? A quilted Barbour jacket looks as good in the West Village as it does in West Yorkshire. And a classic pair of folding Persol sunglasses works as well for beach vacations as they do for ski trips .

Lovers of the great outdoors are a funny bunch to shop for. They typically have all of their most treasured gear ready to go in their quiver already, so this is a demographic for whom you need to be on your A-game. Gifts for outdoorsy types need to be the newest of the new with smart details, category-leading engineering, and unassailable durability. Think a lightweight Norwegian cooler that keeps drinks cool without any ice (that’s right—no ice), or a rechargeable glow light that doubles as a mosquito repellent. Outdoorsy folks will say that they can never have too many puffy layer-type things (so go ahead and consider a puffer blanket, or the iconic Arc’teryx Atom Insulated Hoody), and if all else fails you can get them a beautiful Stanley bottle to keep their favorite beverages warm by the fire.

Here’s the thing about men: There’s a part of us that never really grows up, and will always appreciate having a new toy to play with. This category is for he who will appreciate a wild card gift and savor the element of surprise. A perfect pair of travel-sized binoculars made from the best optical-grade crystal in the world? Jackpot! A wearable tech bracelet to quantify how well (or not well) we’re pumping at the gym? Bingo! A bird feeder with a motion-sensing camera so you can get live updates on which winged friends are snacking in your backyard? Why not?

We hate to stereotype the genders—but a lot of self-care products out there are marketed more heavily toward women, leaving the average guy in the lurch. He may not know the benefits of investing in a Dr. Barbara Sturm skincare regimen, or how regular use of a sauna blanket can help improve sleep and recovery patterns, or that Athletic Greens’ enormously popular AG1 powder also comes in convenient travel-sized packs for on-the-go vitamin pick-me-ups. There’s a whole world of self-care products out there! Here we’ve gathered some of the best items to kick-start his journey—sometimes all it takes is a pair of “Wicked Good” shearling slippers from L.L.Bean to get the ball rolling.

Food is one of our favorite ways to experience travel. If you’re not quite ready to gift someone a full evening at Eleven Madison Park , or a trip to sample authentic prosciutto di Parma straight off the bone in Italy , the good news is that the marvels of modern packing and shipping have made some of the world’s tastiest foods closer than ever. A single-origin Spice Passport livens up tired airplane food anywhere, while Flamingo Estate’s Instagram-famous tomato candles and olive oil feel particularly ripe for gifting this year. And if you aren’t able to snag a table for two at Carbone , the restaurant's store bought signature sauce is absolutely fine.

Home gifts can be a tricky gift to navigate—you really need to know a person to make an informed decision. But no matter what the recipient’s sense of style is, there are certain things that show you care and are likely to fit in to most any home. In an age when photos live on our phones and are lost to the cloud forever, for instance, a custom acrylic photo block has a nice physicality to it. Beautiful linen sheets are always in style. A crisp-smelling candle from a small business in Hudson, New York , warms up any space. And when in doubt, the flourish of a fabulous Brazilian jacquard hammock has the right air of whimsy to it to grace any bachelor pad.

Just pop one into each of your bags — I'd recommend adding one to your keychain and backpack , too — and you'll be able to track your bags directly on your iOS device. The next time an airline tells you that your bag is "lost," you'll hopefully have a much clearer picture of where it is.

Zero Eight Left art

travel gifts argos

Buy: Zero Eight Left art for $48

What do you get the traveler who loves the journey even more than the destination? Look no further than 08L (Zero Eight Left).

This aviation enthusiast-approved shop specializes in art and lifestyle gear for those who love planes and airports. Pick from airport diagrams, runway maps and aircraft metal art.

My current favorite pick is 08L's coasters — the Airbus and Boeing six-packs make a great gift for any AvGeek.

Apple AirPods Pro

travel gifts argos

Buy: Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) on Amazon for $189.99 (normally $249)

A plethora of top-notch noise-canceling headphones are on the market — trust me, I recently reviewed six of them — but none are as easy-to-use as Apple's AirPods Pro.

The second-generation Pros bring major improvements to the noise cancellation experience, and the fact that the entire package can easily fit in my pocket makes them a game changer for travel. I used to lug around bulky over-ear headphones, but why bother when you can get great sound quality in a pair of earbuds that fit in the palm of your hand?

Also, the latest generation Pros offer a USB-C charging case, which pairs perfectly with the new iPhone and the latest tech standards.

MZ Wallace Metro Tote

travel gifts argos

Buy: MZ Wallace Metro Tote for $295

Sometimes your travels call for a bag that's sized in between a backpack and a rollaboard. Perhaps you have a loved one who treks around the city or bounces between work, home and the gym.

MZ Wallace offers a lineup of bags that are sure to fit that always-on-the-go lifestyle. Their bags come in a variety of colors and styles. My favorite is the Large Metro Tote, which is perfect for bopping around New York City.

Le Labo from Shop Edition

travel gifts argos

Buy: Le Labo from Shop Edition for $184.80 (normally $231) or 63,000 Marriott Bonvoy points

One of my favorite parts about staying in luxury hotels is trying out all of the fancy scents and bath amenities that I wouldn't necessarily purchase at home.

While some people like to fill up doggy bags with their favorite scents, this year, I'm going to ask my wife for some of Le Labo's creations, specifically the formulation designed for Edition Hotels.

This is perhaps my favorite hotel fragrance, so what better way to dream of the shores of Bodrum than by pumping my apartment with this scent?

Plus, Shop Edition lets you redeem Marriott Bonvoy points to cover the cost of your gifts. It might not be the world's best points redemption, but it's at least worth noting the option.

Loop Engage Earplugs

travel gifts argos

Buy: Loop Engage Earplugs on Amazon for $27.96 (normally $34.95)

If your family or friends are sensitive to noise when traveling, you might want to pick up a pair of Loop Engage Earplugs for them this holiday season.

With more than 4,000 five-star reviews on Amazon, including some glowing recommendations from TPG staffers, these are among the best earplugs out there. Also, the loop system should help them stay in your ears when dozing off.

HoomBand Ultimate Eye Mask

travel gifts argos

Buy: HoomBand Ultimate Eye Mask on Amazon for $117

Eye masks are another sleep essential, especially when crisscrossing time zones on long-haul flights.

Finding the perfect eye mask is no easy task, but HoomBand's version continues to receive rave reviews from travelers, myself included. It even has Bluetooth connectivity to play relaxing meditations.

With this gift, you'll help your friends and family doze off during their next flight — and they might not even ask you again for extra miles for a business-class upgrade.

5 Stripe Hoodie, Aviator Nation

travel gifts argos

Buy: 5 Stripe Hoodie, Aviator Nation for $189

Everyone has their travel uniform, and these days, I'm seeing more and more people walking around the airport in Aviator Nation sweatshirts.

I didn't originally know why, but after my wife bought me one earlier this year, I've been hooked. If you're looking for a gift that'll make travel more comfortable, an Aviator Nation sweatshirt is it.

iPhone 15 family

travel gifts argos

Buy: iPhone 15 from Apple starting at $799

For as long as TPG has published an annual holiday gift guide , the latest iPhone models have made the cut. This year is no exception, especially with the abundance of travel-focused improvements Apple brought to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro lineup this year.

Upgrades include USB-C charging ports (that can even power other devices), an Action Button on the Pro models for easier access to your favorite apps and the introduction of the Dynamic Island on the entry-level iPhone 15.

TUMI - Alpha Continental Dual Access Carry-On Luggage

travel gifts argos

Buy: TUMI - Alpha Continental Dual Access Carry-On Luggage on Amazon for $1,050

No holiday gift guide is complete without a suitcase, so why not set your sights high with one of the very best? Tumi's Alpha 2 Continental four-wheeled carry-on is a popular sight at airports worldwide, and for good reason.

The bag is incredibly durable — my current Tumi carry-on has lasted nearly a decade — and its multiple pockets make for easy access while on the road. Additionally, it's stylish and comes in four different color options, making it the perfect choice for any road warrior in your life.

Anker Prime 67W USB-C Charger

travel gifts argos

Buy: Anker Prime 67W USB-C Charger on Amazon for $37.99 (normally $59.99)

Cable clutter can be frustrating, so I do whatever I can to minimize the number of power bricks and cables I carry in my travel backpack.

With Anker's 67-watt USB-C charger, you can leave all your big and bulky power bricks at home. This small cube easily fits into your backpack, and it boasts two USB-C ports and one USB-A port for easy charging of up to three devices.

No wonder the TPG team swears by it.

Riemot Luggage Travel Cup Holder

travel gifts argos

Buy: Riemot Luggage Travel Cup Holder on Amazon for $9.99 (normally $13.99)

We've all been there. You just picked up a coffee at the airport, and now you need to figure out how you'll hold the cup, wheel your bag and carry your purse or briefcase without spilling the drink.

Enter this Luggage Travel Cup Holder. It fits perfectly on the handle of your rollaboard, and it's the perfect place to put your coffee when you're hustling to the gate.

It's already saved some TPG travelers from multiple spills, and it's the gift that certainly pays dividends.

Wanderlust Passport — A Travel Journal

travel gifts argos

Buy: Wanderlust Passport — A Travel Journal for $36

There are many digital tools available to track your travels. However, sometimes a pen and paper will be your best bet. Also, if you want to help a loved one get started on journaling their travels, consider the Wanderlust Passport.

This notebook features maps and open-ended prompts to help jog their memories, and it includes pockets to store ticket stubs and receipts. This would make a great gift for adventurous kids and teens.

Q Slim Portable Charger

travel gifts argos

Buy: Q Slim Portable Charger on Amazon, $28.79 (normally $39.99)

If your friends and family members aren't yet traveling with a portable power bank, it's time to change that. On a recent long-haul flight, the power outlet was broken, forcing me to either drain my battery or resort to using a power bank.

When gifting a power bank, Q Ultra's 10,000mAh model is a good bet. Not only does this power bank have enough juice for all your devices, but it also has built-in charging cables for added convenience.

Aluan Handheld Mini Fan

travel gifts argos

Buy: Aluan Handheld Mini Fan on Amazon for $9.99 (normally $11.99)

Whether it's a long-haul flight that doesn't feature personal air nozzles or an Uber ride with broken air conditioning, don't leave your loved ones' thermal comfort in the hands of someone else.

Several TPG members swear by the Aluan Handheld Mini Fan, and I'm definitely going to pick one up this holiday season, too.

SABRE Door Stop Security Alarm

travel gifts argos

Buy: SABRE Door Stop Security Alarm on Amazon for $13.25 (normally $14.99)

Danger can strike at any time, so show your family and friends that you're looking out for them with the Sabre 120 dB Wedge Door Stop Security Alarm.

This door alarm is small and lightweight — making it great for travelers — and it'll provide extra piece of mind in hotels and Airbnbs.

Belkin BoostCharge Pro

travel gifts argos

Buy: Belkin BoostCharge Pro on Amazon for $125.26 (normally $131.76)

While I enjoy using multiple tech devices , cable clutter is a big pet peeve of mine. That's why Belkin's BoostCharge Pro has become a fixture on my nightstand.

This all-in-one dock can wirelessly charge up to three devices with just a single power cable. Additionally, with the introduction of Standby Mode with iOS 17 , iPhone users can dock their phones and peek at all their important widgets even without touching the device — a game changer when I first wake up in the morning.

JetKids by Stokke BedBox Ride-on Suitcase

travel gifts argos

Buy: JetKids by Stokke BedBox Ride-on Suitcase on Amazon for $183.20 (normally $229)

Kids also need carry-on bags, so why not get one they'll be excited to use?

If you're shopping for a future world explorer, the Stokke JetKids Ride-On Suitcase should fit the bill. Not only does it come in six colors, but kids can also ride on top of it when they get tired — a win-win gift.

DJI Mini 4 Pro

travel gifts argos

Buy: DJI Mini 4 Pro on Amazon for $759

I've long been a fan of DJI's drones, and the Mini 4 Pro has the broadest appeal, both for travelers and recreational users. Weighing less than 249 grams (or less than 8.8 ounces), it's pretty portable. Since the device is just shy of the Federal Aviation Administration's 250-gram limit, you can fly it without prior registration.

This drone packs some serious pro-level chops into its small package: a 48 MP photo capability, 4K video and 34 minutes of flight time. Better yet, this is one of DJI's first drones to support vertical content capture for Instagram and TikTok.

It's a small but mighty drone.

"Villeggiatura: Italian Summer Vacation" Assouline Coffee Table Book

travel gifts argos

Buy: Villeggiatura: Italian Summer Vacation - Assouline Coffee Table Book on Amazon for $105

Even if they're staying at home this holiday season, you can quickly transport your friends and family members to paradise with an Assouline coffee table book, such as the "Villeggiatura: Italian Summer Vacation" edition.

With stunning photos, interesting stories and eye-catching colors, an Assouline book is a great way to explore a favorite destination without getting up from the fireplace.

Apple MacBook Air (2023 model)

travel gifts argos

Buy: Apple Macbook Air (2023 model) on Amazon for $1,049 (normally $1,299)

Even though it's been more than three years since the pandemic started, "work from anywhere" is very much still the norm with many employers. As such, choosing the right travel laptop is more important than ever.

Loved ones will want the best mix of performance, portability and battery life.

Apple recently debuted a slew of new MacBook Pros that excel at all three metrics — including battery life that can top 22 hours — and the company's MacBook Air continues to impress more casual users.

Microsoft also recently improved its portable laptop game, with the $799 Surface Laptop Go 3 being a great introductory option for those looking for a more budget-friendly choice.

Vuori joggers

travel gifts argos

Buy: Vuori performance joggers for $94

I asked my wife for her top travel-themed holiday gift recommendation, and Vuori's Performance Jogger was at the top of her list. I then asked the TPG team the same question, and a handful of staffers had the exact same response.

The joggers are available for both men and women and come in various colors. If there's a frequent flyer in your life, here's an easy way to make them more comfortable on their next journey.

Lonely Planet's "Best in Travel 2024"

travel gifts argos

Buy: Lonely Planet Best in Travel 2024 on Amazon for $16.19 (normally $17.99)

Know someone who is seeking some inspiration on where to travel in the new year? Consider gifting them with the 2024 edition of Lonely Planet's best-selling "Best in Travel" guidebook.

This title will provide the ultimate trip inspiration, and it packs some great recommendations that are sure to impress even the most discerning travelers. Note: Lonely Planet is owned by TPG's parent company, Red Ventures.

My Mom Is the Queen of Overpacking, so I'm Gifting Her These Packing Cubes for Mother's Day

The on-sale set comes with one large compression bag and two smaller accessory bags to fit everything you need.

travel gifts argos

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

When my mom travels, she brings clothes for every situation, rain or shine, no matter her destination. She packs for multiple wardrobe changes per day and brings large suitcases on even quick overnight trips . Her packing style is to be prepared for any and all situations that may occur wherever she goes, but that doesn’t always lend itself to organization. That’s why this Mother’s Day, I’m gifting her a set (or two) of these Vera Bradley Packing Cubes .

It took me a while to get adjusted to using packing cubes on my own travels, but now that I’ve grown accustomed to the technique, I couldn't imagine traveling without them. I now love getting to stuff all of my items by category into small bags to keep things neat, and pack things away again once they’ve been worn throughout my trip. With the cubes now on sale for just $43, I can’t wait to give my mom a set this Mother’s Day.

Vera Bradley Compression Packing Cube 3-piece Set

A high-quality set of packing cubes is a must-have to keep organized while on the go. This fun and colorful set from Vera Bradley includes three packing cubes — one large bag and two smaller ones that are perfect for accessories, undergarments, swimsuits, and more. The large bag also features a compression zipper so you can fit your items into an even smaller space.

I like to keep my tops and bottoms separate while packing to stay extra organized, so I recommend investing in two sets of these packing cubes so you can have two large bags. With six bright patterns to choose from, you can select a different style for different items or buy a matching set.

The smaller bags are also ideal for holding toiletry bottles or hair accessories. When I travel, I use one for all of my sunscreens, bug sprays, hand sanitizers, and other items I want to have with me at all times. It’s the perfect size to stash into beach bags, day packs, and more so I can be just as prepared as my mom while keeping my items collected.

I’m not the only one obsessed with these stylish bags. One Amazon shopper said : “The colors are vibrant and you can see they are made to meet high quality standards, something we expect from Vera Bradley. They are made of water-repellent ripstop polyester and this gives them more versatility and durability. As a practical person, I want something that can be easily wiped clean if needed and these meet that requirement.”

Other travelers especially love how well-organized these bags keep their luggage for every adventure from overnighters to week-long trips. “These small polyester packing cubes are very lightweight and are a good size for my suitcase,” one shopper said . “I like a good, organized suitcase because sometimes you are in a dark and unfamiliar hotel room and it is nice to be able to just grab the bag that you know is holding the thing that you need. These pretty floral bags have little handles and the large one zips out to add more space to the bag. Because they are lightweight, they don’t unnecessarily weigh down your suitcase.”

While not everyone loves a packing cube, they really are game-changers for keeping yourself organized on the go. Even overpackers like my mom are sure to love the fun patterns and high-quality convenience of these bags. If your mom is like mine, be sure to grab a set or two of these bags this Mother’s Day, so she can bring all of her essentials and still zip up her suitcase easily on her next trip. If the bright floral patterns of this set aren’t your mom’s style, consider some of my other favorite packing cube sets from well-known brands below.

More Packing Cubes at Amazon:

Bagsmart compression packing cubes, veken 8 set packing cubes for suitcases, calpak packing cubes set (5 pieces), tortuga packing cubes (set of 3).

At the time of publishing, the price started at $43.

How long until I get my cash back?

The time to receiving cash back varies across retailers. For Argos they quote that sales are tracked within 12 hours. This is when the activity should appear in the activity area of your profile. The more shopping you do on Quidco, the more cash back you will see appearing in this area with its approximate payment date. Argos quote that all cash back will be paid within 4 months. From experience it is usually much quicker than this.

Do you recommend any other great deals on Quidco?

Yes! We recently wrote a post about the Gousto deal they have. There is a great cash back incentive on this one, currently £15 on top of the £15 bonus you would get for signing up. Along with the discount they offer on site, the first box ends up being free! Gousto is a meal delivery service, so a great way to save money on next weeks food shop!

Cash back websites are great for earning some extra money over the year. You gain money throughout the year by shopping through the cash back website. The cash back can take a few months to be actively available, but by leaving it in there for a while, you will be surprised how it builds up and can then contribute towards your travel funds!

The links in this article are affiliate links. It doesn’t cost you anything to click them and you will receive a £15 bonus. As always we only promote genuinely great deals. As a small family run business we understand that every little helps!

Mother’s Day gift ideas for a travel-loving mom

Find a gift she’ll love for her next adventure.

travel gifts argos

By Caroline McDonald

Mother’s Day is quickly approaching. If your mom loves to travel, she is probably itching to go on a trip or two this spring and summer. While it may be too expensive to fund her entire vacation, travel accessories are far more affordable and versatile.

To help you make your mom’s travel dreams a reality, here are a few fun gift ideas.

Travel accessories for mom

Hoxis oversize vegan leather tote bag.

This $36 stylish leather tote on Amazon is lightweight and durable, and it comes in ten different colors. According to Travel + Leisure , the bag works as an effective carry-on item that “can be taken from the airplane to a day of shopping (and even to the poolside) with ease.”

Riemot Luggage Caddy

For the mom who likes to fly, this luggage caddy from Amazon is incredibly convenient. Only $14, the caddy fits right over the handles of your suitcase and boasts three pockets, functioning as a cup holder and as a place to put your wallet, phone, or passport. The caddy is washable and adjustable, and comes in a variety of colors.

National Parks Pass

With spring and summer comes warmer weather and an abundance of opportunities to explore the outdoors. This $80 National Parks Pass includes entry into all of the national parks in the United States for an entire year — over 2,000 sites.

Travel books for mom

‘salt to the sea’.

In “Salt to the Sea”, Ruth Sepetys gives the gripping fictional account of four refugees who lived during World War II. Seeking freedom and healing, they board the ill-fated Wilhelm Gustloff, where their paths converge. Buy the paperback for $7.68 on Amazon .

‘Pride and Prejudice’

Jane Austen’s beloved classic tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet, a young woman living in 18th-century England. Christmas gift guide to Moscow surroundings

travel gifts argos

Visitors from America and Western Europe might be surprised to discover that Russia celebrates Christmas on January 7th. That’s because the Russian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar. After the end of the Soviet Union, some Russians have begun celebrating Christmas on December 25 in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. But many Russians still observe the tradition of fasting on January 6th, breaking the fast with a large feast on Christmas Eve after the first star has appeared in the sky.

During the Soviet era, Christmas and religious traditions were banned in Russia. Santa Claus was replaced by Ded Moroz, or, Grandfather Frost, an old man with a long white beard who would bring gifts to children on New Year’s instead of Christmas. According to Russian tradition, Ded Moroz is accompanied by his granddaughter, Snegurochka, the Snowmaiden, who helps him on his journey to give presents to children.

Although the tradition of having a Christmas tree, known as a yolka in Russian, was also banned during Soviet times, Russians got around this by having New Year’s trees from which they hung homemade decorations. Today, the restrictions of the Soviet Union have faded into history, and during the Christmas season visitors to Russia can even purchase Christmas ornaments in the shape of matryoshka dolls, or religious icons that depict nativity scenes.

Heading counterclockwise around the Golden Ring this holiday season, northeast of Moscow, your first stop will most likely be the city of Vladimir, home to some of Russia’s most striking churches and cathedrals. The Vladimir region is known for its fine crystal. Stop by the Crystal, Lacquer Miniatures, and Embroidery Museum ( 2 Bolshaya Moskovskaya ) for an overview of traditional crafts before visiting the gift shop in the museum to browse the crystal selection. Vladimir Chic ( 2 Dvoryanskaya ) also sells local glass and crystal work.

Typical souvenirs are also for sale in Vladimir’s old town, especially by the Golden Gate, a triumphal arch and defensive tower that is one of the last-remaining parts of the wall that once surrounded ancient Vladimir and a sure stop on any tour of the Golden Ring.

Just 63 kilometers from Vladimir lays the nearby city of Gus-Khrustalny , the ‘Crystal Goose,’ also home to a rich glass and crystal making tradition. You can visit the glassmaking factory in Gus-Khrustalny and buy gifts ranging from plates and vases to decanters, or visit the outlet store back in Moscow ( 4 Ilyinka ) just east of the Kremlin.

North of Vladimir, you’ll arrive in Suzdal, one of the Golden Ring route’s more tranquil towns. Suzdal boasts a number of small bazaars and stands outside the main tourist sites where visitors can purchase local honey mead, called medovukha, along with traditional crafts, like a pair valenki, or Russian woolen boots, which make an ideal Christmas gift for friends and family back home. The shopping stands outside Suzdal’s Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life ( Ul. Pushkarskaya ) are also highly recommended. Market Square ( Torgovaya Pl ) houses a number of shops where visitors can search for arts and crafts.

Following the Golden Ring north of Suzdal, many tours will stop in the city of Kostroma, a former trading outpost on the immense Volga River. One of the city’s highlights is the Museum of Linen and Birchbark ( 38 Tereshkova ), where visitors can view exhibits on traditional Russian crafts woven from flax and bark. A gift shop in the basement sells tablecloths, napkins, baskets, linen dolls, and traditional clothing typical of the region.

South from Kostroma, stop in the city of Rostov-Veliky for enamel jewelry, a craft which allows artists to produce small paintings on metal that are then fired to produce a thin glaze over the image. Rostov became famous for its tradition of enamel work. Today, visitors can purchase rings, earrings, bracelets, brooches, and jewelry boxes in the gift shop of the Rostov Enamel factory ( 3 Borisoglebskoye Highway ).

While you’re in Rostov, visit the House of Crafts ( 16 Vtoraya Tolstovskaya Naberezhnaya ) for local pottery and the Souvenirs shop ( 5 Ul. Kamennyi Most ) for ushanka hats—Russian fur caps with earflaps—paintings, and samovars for tea lovers.

The last two stops on a tour of the Golden Ring are the cities of Pereslavl-Zalesskiy and Sergiev Posad. Pereslavl is most famous for its embroidery work, available at the Art Salon ( 12 Ul. Sovetskaya ) along with souvenirs made of wood and stone. Nearby Sergiev Posad is considered the place where Russia’s matryoshka dolls were first invented, and was the chief production center of the dolls before Soviet times. Visit the city’s Toy Museum ( 123 Pr. Krasny Armii ) to get a better sense of the birthplace of one of Russia’s most recognizable toys, then head over to the market alongside the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius—one of the city’s most important sites—to load up on matryoshka dolls, painted eggs, and icons before going home.

If you’ll be in the Golden Ring during New Years, the city of Vladimir hosts an impressive Christmas fair, with an iceskating rink and performances by local artists, in the main square ( Sobornaya Pl ). In most other Golden Ring cities you’ll find similar events in the center square as Christmas nears.

Most shops and markets in the Golden Ring are open year round. If you’re coming to Russia for a short period of time, whether in winter or summer, consider a trip to this stunning part of the country, and bring an extra bag if you plan to go shopping for Christmas gifts.

Justice Thomas Denounces ‘the Nastiness and the Lies’ Faced by His Family

The statement was among the few public remarks he has made since revelations that he had failed to report lavish gifts and travel from wealthy conservatives.

Reporting from Point Clear, Ala.

Justice Clarence Thomas denounced on Friday “the nastiness and the lies” that have shadowed him in recent years as public scrutiny has mounted over his wife’s efforts to subvert the 2020 election and luxury gifts he has accepted from billionaire friends.

It amounted to some of the most extensive public remarks he has made since revelations that he failed to disclose years of lavish trips from wealthy conservatives, like the Texas real estate magnate Harlan Crow, including on private jets and a superyacht.

“My wife and I, the last two or three years, just the nastiness and the lies,” said Justice Thomas, who did not specify what he was referring to in addressing a full ballroom of lawyers and judges gathered for a judicial conference in Alabama. “There’s certainly been a lot of negativity in our lives, my wife and I, over the last few years, but we choose not to focus on it.”

The justice faced calls for recusal after text messages and emails showed that his wife, Virginia Thomas, known as Ginni, sought to overturn the election , appealing to administration officials and lawmakers. Justice Thomas has continued to participate in a number of cases related to the 2020 election, including three about Jan. 6 on the docket this term.

The remarks were part of a wide-ranging conversation at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit Judicial Conference held at a luxury resort on the waters of Mobile Bay, a shallow inlet of the Gulf of Mexico.

Interviewed by a former clerk, Kathryn Kimball Mizelle, now a federal judge in Florida best known for overturning the Biden administration’s mask mandate , Justice Thomas reminisced about past years on the court, when he said it would have been impossible to imagine anyone leaking opinions. That appeared to be a reference to the 2022 leak of the draft decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization eliminating the constitutional right to abortion.

“We may have been a dysfunctional family, but we were a family,” he said. “And it would be inconceivable that anyone would leak an opinion of the court or do anything to intentionally harm one another.”

He expressed frustration with some of the current trends in the federal courts, including the practice of seeking sympathetic judges and the increasing use of emergency petitions that ask the Supreme Court to consider issues quickly.

He said cherry-picking judges, or forum-shopping, had led to situations where “a district judge can issue an injunction for the whole nation.” The emergency docket, where the justices often decide on issues, some of which are extremely consequential, without full briefing or oral argument, “short-circuits our process.”

The justice, who did not take questions and declined an interview request, appeared at ease, laughing and beaming as he pointed out his law clerks in the audience. He repeated several times that he and Ms. Thomas, who sat near the front of the ballroom in a bright pink floral tunic, try to ignore their critics.

“You don’t get to prevent people from doing horrible things or saying horrible things,” the justice said. “But one, you have to understand and accept the fact that they don’t, they can’t change you unless you permit that.”

Justice Thomas returned to many familiar themes, including his reluctance at becoming a judge and then a justice. He said he had never sought, or wanted, a public life but believed it to be his duty.

Before he was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, he said, “I was thinking of getting out of D.C. I had no interest in being in public life.”

“I wound up in this job,” he said. “And this is, we pray, to do whatever it was that God wanted me to do, what I was being called to do. But being in public life is not something I would have chosen to do.”

He peppered his remarks with references to his childhood in Georgia. He was born in Pin Point, a tiny enclave in the tidal wetlands near Savannah, and then grew up in the city, raised mainly by his grandparents.

He described how he tries to write clearly and plainly, avoiding word play and unnecessary flourishes because he wants those who do not practice the law, like the people he grew up with, to be able to understand the decisions of the Supreme Court.

Before he could finish an anecdote about walking with a friend in his old neighborhood in Georgia, he noted that the memory came from “before they started attacking my friends; I hope I still have some.”

The comment appeared to be a nod to the revelations about Mr. Crow. Justice Thomas has maintained that Mr. Crow is a longtime friend and that he did not act improperly.

Their relationship has raised eyebrows, in part because Mr. Crow purchased the justice’s mother’s home and funded a museum in Pin Point in a former seafood cannery where his mother worked as a crab picker.

Justice Thomas picked up another familiar refrain, detailing how he and Ms. Thomas love traveling in their motor coach because they get to interact with ordinary people.

“Especially in Washington, people pride themselves in being awful,” he said. “It’s a hideous place, as far as I’m concerned. Because the rest of the country, it’s one of the reasons we like R.V.-ing, you get to be around regular people who don’t pride themselves in doing harmful things, merely because they have the capacity to do it.”

He made no mention of an investigation that revealed that he borrowed more than a quarter of a million dollars from a wealthy friend to buy the 40-foot luxury motor coach.

He stressed that one of his long-term goals has been to try to make the court more representative of the country. He said he chooses law clerks from outside Ivy League schools, pointing to Judge Mizelle as an example.

The justice said he felt encouraged by the collegiality of the conference, lamenting how he could no longer mingle with attendees as easily as when he first joined the court.

“I didn’t need so much security back then,” he said.

All of the justices received increased security after the Dobbs leak. Several security officers were positioned around the ballroom and in the hallways.

Asked about any advice he wished he had received before becoming a judge, Justice Thomas said he was grateful for the support of the other justices, but said it has not been easy.

“If I knew more about the court, I would have stayed on the D.C. Circuit,” he said, to some laughter from the audience. “But we don’t get to choose that. We’re called to do something and we do it. But I think that the — I really would have preferred, if I could be selfish, to be on the D.C. Circuit. I think this court is a bit tougher of a haul.”

The best cat nail trimmers of 2024, according to experts

The best nail trimmers will be the right size for both your hands and your cat’s claws.

We’re celebrating National Pet Week at NBC Select by sharing our favorite pet products. Shop  puppy supplies ,  kitten essentials , travel carriers  and more on our  pets homepage .

Nail trimmers are probably not on the list of things your cat loves , but it’s still an important part of pet parenthood. Learning to clip your cat’s nails at home can save you time and money at the groomer or vet’s office and can prevent scratching and overgrown claws for cats who do not file their nails on their own. Since nail trimmers come in various styles, narrowing down the right pair is easier said than done. To help you find the best ones for home use, we interviewed two veterinarians and a groomer about general shopping advice and step-by-step directions for trimming your cat’s nails at home. We also asked for their favorite tools and included them alongside staff recommendations.

How we picked the best cat nail trimmers

“A cat will react more to an inexperienced person than a confident person,” says Molly Bissantz , a professional groomer and owner of the Boise-based company Grooming by Molly . As a result, choosing clippers that you feel comfortable using is paramount. Our experts recommend keeping the following criteria in mind while shopping:

  • Style : Cat nail trimmers come in three primary designs: scissors (which cut small claws with precision), guillotine-style trimmers (which may work better for large cats with thick claws) and electric grinders (which shorten and smooth nails on cats who do not mind the noise), according to our experts.
  • Size : Your trimmers should fit comfortably in the palm of your hand and have a blade that’s big enough to effectively clip your cat’s claws. Avoid trimmers that are too big that it’s overwhelming for either of you, according to our experts.
  • Safety and durability : A safe pair of trimmers is a well-made pair of trimmers, since sharp blades, built-in guard features and nonslip handles will help make the process clean and efficient, according to our experts.

select How to buy the best cat litter box, according to veterinarians

How to shop for cat nail trimmers.

The best nail trimmers differ from cat to cat. Before you choose a specific pair of trimmers, you should decide which type best suits you, your cat and the job at hand, according to our experts. After that, ensure that the tool is the right size for your cat’s nails and that it’s made from safe, durable materials that warrant the price. Below, we outline these key factors in detail.

Trimmer type

All three of our experts prefer different types of trimmers, so it’s largely a matter of personal preference. That said, some tools are better suited for certain cats and specific jobs, according to our experts. For example, “a lightweight trimmer with smaller blades works best for small cats or kittens, [while] larger cats require sturdier clippers to handle thicker claws,” says Barrett. These are the three primary designs you’ll find when shopping for cat nail trimmers:

  • Scissor-style clippers : Scissor-style clippers look and function like standard scissors, but they have a semi-circle-shaped blade that hugs the nail. They are great for precise, careful, quick trims, and work well for small claws, so they’re suitable for kittens, says Barrett.
  • Guillotine-style trimmers : Guillotine trimmers “have a unique design with a hole where you insert the nail [before] a sliding blade cuts it,” says Barrett, who prefers scissors, but still recommends this style for medium- to large-sized cats. That said, guillotine trimmers are the most polarizing design on this list: Osborne loves them because they cut the nail squarely on both the top and the bottom to prevent splintering, while Bissantz warns against them because it’s hard to judge how short you’re cutting the nail, which can be especially dangerous on a cat that will not sit still.
  • Electric grinders : Grinders or electric filers are less common, but their motorized buffer can help smooth out jagged edges, shorten especially thick nails and replace manual trimmers for cats who will not tolerate them, according to our experts. However, because they make noise, they’re usually not ideal for skittish cats.

Size matters when choosing the right pair of clippers. Look for a tool that fits comfortably in your hand and matches the size of your cat’s claws. When in doubt, size down, since smaller clippers offer better control and work well on fidgety cats, according to our experts. If a trimmer is marketed solely for dogs, it is probably too big for a feline, Bissantz says.

“The materials used in cat nail trimmers directly affect their function and durability,” says Barrett. Look for stainless steel blades since they stay sharp for longer and handles with ergonomic rubber grips to reduce slippage and give you more control, according to our experts. Some trimmers also have replaceable blades for longevity.

If you are nervous about trimming your cat’s nails, opt for pairs with built-in safety features: “Safety locks prevent accidental cuts, while nail guards help avoid over-trimming,” says Barrett.

You can find a well-rated clipper for about $5 and a grinder for $20. That said, investing in a good trimmer made from durable materials will save you money in the long run by avoiding frequent replacements, says Barrett.

How to clip your cat’s nails at home

“Start grooming your cat early; the younger, the better. Kittens learn fast and will get used to nail trimming more quickly than adult cats,” says Barrett.

Before clipping your cat’s nails for the first time, Bissantz recommends seeking help from a professional to show you holding and clipping techniques. You’ll likely have to pay for their expertise, but it’s worth the cost to build confidence and prevent accidents, according to our experts.

Ensure your clippers are sharp (a dull blade can cause splitting or uneven nails) and choose a quiet, enclosed space with minimal hiding spots where you can sit with your cat on your lap, according to our experts. “Don’t give catnip before nail trimming,” as it may result in overstimulation or unpredictable behavior, says Bissantz.

“Hold your cat’s paw firmly but gently, pressing on a pad to extend a claw,” says Barrett. “Position the clipper at an angle to avoid cutting into the quick,” which is the pink part of the nail that has blood vessels and nerves.

Follow the manufacturer’s directions and clip confidently, as your cat will likely sense any hesitance, according to our experts.

“Use treats and praise to make the experience positive,” says Barrett. “Over time, regular sessions help your feline friend become more comfortable with nail care at home.

What other tools should you have?

In addition to the clippers themselves, you may want to invest in an air muzzle to prevent your cat from biting and a towel for swaddling, says Bissantz. Our experts also recommend Kwik Stop powder , styptic pencils or silver nitrate sticks , all of which promptly stop any bleeding in case you accidentally clip the nail too short.

For the first few sessions, enlist the help of a friend for support and to securely hold your cat while you clip, according to our experts. Last but not least, get a cat scratching post. “Many cat owners are delighted to find out that their cat will keep his nails in shape all by himself,” so you can minimize the frequency of clipping sessions, says Osborne.

The US and the West are facing the blowback of sanctions against Russia, economist says

  • The West's sanctions against Russia triggered a "dramatic" inflation problem.
  • That's according to economist Jeff Rubin, who says the US is feeling the blowback of its economic war on Russia.

Insider Today

The US miscalculated when it imposed harsh sanctions on Russia, and not only has Vladimir Putin's economy weathered the impact, but the West is facing the negative effects of the economic restrictions it imposed.

That's according to Jeff Rubin, an economist who thinks the West may have opened "Pandora's box of unintended consequences" by enforcing tight restrictions after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"The most obvious of those consequences is the resurrection of inflation, which had been long buried for more than four decades. Sanctions were the trigger for its dramatic revival," Rubin wrote in an op-ed for The Globe and Mail on Friday.

The US and other Western nations have introduced a host of sanctions targeting Russian goods, including bans on Russian energy flows and a $60 price cap on Russian oil traded using Western shipping and insurance firms.

Those measures have helped crimp Moscow's war revenue , but they've likely also resulted in higher prices for Western consumers, Rubin said. Food and energy prices have soared since the West imposed sanctions on Russia, he noted partly because Russia is one of the world's largest exporters of oil and grain.

Inflation could worsen if US trade with Russia's allies, like China, becomes impacted, Rubin said. US firms are at risk of shifting their operations to countries that are on more friendly terms with the US, but America's closest allies are countries where workers earn high wages, which can push prices up for consumers.

"That, in turn, has forced a crippling rise in interest rates, as central banks such as the Federal Reserve Board and the Bank of Canada were reluctantly forced to respond by raising their target interest rates from near zero to the 5-per-cent range," he added.

Rubin notes that Russia had quietly sanction-proofed much of its economy leading up to the invasion, while the BRICS bloc of nations expanded and became more intertwined. This helped insulate Russia against the measures, and rising economies in the global south helped Putin blunt the impact of sanctions.

"That proved to be a fatal miscalculation. Whereas in the past the loss of Western markets – particularly for Russian energy exports, the lifeblood of Moscow's war machine – would have dealt a fatal blow to the Russian economy, that certainly is no longer the case."

Even the US dollar may end up worse off due to sanctions, Rubin said. Russia has been coordinating with its allies to shift away from using the US dollar for trade. Russia's trade with China, for instance, has nearly completely phased out the dollar , Russian officials said last year.

"Sanctioning the ruble and confiscating a third of the Russian central bank's foreign reserves was supposed to cripple the Russian economy. Instead, it has cost the US dollar its five-decade status as the petrocurrency of the world and may soon cost it even more: its once unrivalled position as the sole reserve currency in the world," Rubin wrote.
