This Card: The Lowdown

If you tend to choose Woolies over Coles for your weekly shop, then the Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card may just be for you. Allowing you to earn Qantas Points on your Woolies groceries and on your everyday spending elsewhere, this card offers a straightforward points-earner, with no points cap in place.

As you would expect from a platinum rewards card, the Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card also provides a number of platinum perks, making it a great choice for cardholders who like a few fancy features on their credit card.

In terms of features, here are some of the enticing extras you can expect as a Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card holder.

  • Visa Luxury Hotels access provides you benefits such as room upgrades, free in-room internet, complimentary continental breakfast, late check-out and a $25 food or beverage voucher during your stay.

Digging Deeper

With the basics covered, it’s time to dig a little deeper into what’s on offer with the Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card, so you can decide whether this card is right for you.

This Card: As a Rewards Card

As a rewards card, this is pretty straightforward and easy to understand. Unlike certain other platinum rewards cards with complex earn rates and point structures, the Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card keeps it simple.

As a cardholder, you will earn:

  • 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent at Woolworths, Big W, Caltex Woolworths, BWS, Dan Murphy’s and Cellarmasters.
  • 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent everywhere else.

There is no points cap in place, so you can earn as many points as you like.

Like so many rewards cards, the Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card recently restructured its rewards program. Thanks to changes to credit card ‘interchange fees’, many credit card providers have started to wind back their rewards offerings, making it harder for cardholders to earn big on rewards.

Prior to April 2018, the Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card delivered 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent up to $2,500, and 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent thereafter, uncapped, until the next statement period.

How this affects you as a cardholder really depends on the way in which you use your card. If you tend to shop mostly within the Woolworths Group of stores, then you will continue to earn 1 Qantas Point per $1 on most of your purchases, plus you enjoy uncapped spending.

However, if you plan on using the card elsewhere – and want to earn more on that spend – you may need to look elsewhere. It’s worth bearing in mind that with so many rewards cards cutting their earn rate, you may need to pay a higher annual fee to attain a higher earn rate. If that’s the case, you’ll need to work out whether that higher payout does actually provide more in return.

With that in mind, we’d like to point out that there are ways you can earn more Qantas Points when using the Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card. Here’s how.

You have the opportunity to earn more points when making transactions directly with Qantas. So, if you use your card to pay for Qantas flights or Qantas Club membership, you earn an additional 1 Qantas Point per $1. This gives you 1.5 Qantas Points per $1 overall.

You can now use the separate Woolworths Rewards program to bump up your Qantas Point earn rate as well. As a member, you will not only earn Qantas Points on your total spend, you can also ‘double dip’, by converting your Woolworths Rewards to Qantas Points.

Say your weekly Woolies shop is $200, then paying with the Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card would give you 10,400 Qantas Points per year. In terms of your Woolworths Rewards, you can convert 2,000 Woolworths Rewards to 870 Qantas Points, which works out to be around 0.43 Qantas Points per $1.

This Card: As a Travel Rewards Card

Travel rewards cards such as those that earn Qantas Points often provide travel-related perks to cardholders. Here’s what the Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card has to offer.

While it is common on platinum credit cards, complimentary insurance can be a great little bonus. It not only saves you the hassle of looking for standalone insurance when travelling, it can also save you a heap of money. The catch? You need to read the small print.

Insurance offered by credit cards can offer excellent cover, but you need to read the PDS carefully to make sure it offers the cover you need. The Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card offers a comprehensive suite of insurance covers, for both travel and retail purchases.

  • Overseas Travel Insurance
  • Interstate Flight Inconvenience Insurance
  • Transport Accident Insurance
  • Global Hire Car Excess Waiver
  • Purchase Security Insurance
  • Extended Warranty Insurance
  • Wallet Guard Insurance

The card’s overseas travel insurance provides cover for your whole family if they travel with you for the entire journey, as long as you use the card to pay for everyone’s overseas travel fare. Cover includes unlimited overseas medical emergency cover, interstate flight inconvenience insurance and transport accident insurance when outside Australia.

Another handy one to have when travelling is the card’s global hire car excess waiver. As long as you pay for your car hire using your Woolworths Money Qantas Platinum Credit Card, you can access cover should you have to pay an excess due to loss or damage of your rental vehicle.

Also on offer is the card’s range of retail insurance covers. With purchase security insurance, eligible items purchased using the card are covered for theft or damage for up to 90 days, while extended warranty insurance extends the manufacturer’s Australian warranty by up to 12 months.

When you use your card to book a stay at any of the hand-selected portfolio of hotels listed within the Visa Luxury Hotels collection, you can access a number of tantalising benefits. These include:

  • Best available rate guarantee.
  • Automatic room upgrade upon arrival, when available.
  • Free in-room internet.
  • Complimentary continental breakfast.
  • 3pm check-out, when available.
  • VIP Guest status.
  • $25 food or beverage voucher.

Another familiar feature on platinum cards is the platinum concierge service. Offering cardholders a service similar to that of a personal assistant, this concierge service can be accessed 24/7, to provide valuable advice and assistance.

Whether you want theatre tickets while visiting New York, or a table reservation in Melbourne, your platinum concierge can assist you. From booking a holiday to finding the perfect gift for that someone special, help is only a phone call away.

This Card: Extras on Offer

One of the most important aspects of choosing a credit card is working out whether it offers value. When it comes to platinum credit cards such as the Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card, that means looking at the extras on offer, on top of other features and rewards.

A handy money-saver, this feature gives you a 10% discount on your Woolies shop once a month. Woolies will notify you ahead of time by email, telling you which weekend to shop. Then, all you need to do is shop online or in-store during the specified weekend, use your card to pay, and you will automatically enjoy the 10% discount.

You are limited to one transaction per customer, up to a value of $500, so to make it worth your while, it’s best to plan your big shop for that discount weekend. It’s also worth noting that this offer excludes purchases of liquor, tobacco, newspapers, vouchers, gift cards, mobile recharge, travel cards and tickets. It’s also not available in Tasmania.

If you’re looking to clear your credit card debt, this balance transfer offer could help get you there faster. With 0% p.a. on balance transfers for 14 months, the Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card lets you transfer the balance from your existing credit cards, so you can pay down the balance while enjoying some breathing space from interest.

You will pay no interest on the transferred balance for 14 months from card approval, after which point, any amount left unpaid will revert to the cash advance rate.

As a cardholder, you can benefit from a number of discounts on offer within the Woolworths Group. If you’re thinking about taking out insurance, you could benefit from 10% off Woolworths Insurance, including Home, Car, Landlords, Pet and Travel Insurance. The offer excludes Life and Funeral Insurance.

Or, if you’re looking to re-stock the wine cellar, you could take advantage of 50% off selected wine cases at Cellarmasters. Note, this offer is only valid when you use your card to pay at the online checkout – and delivery charges apply.

This Card: The Essentials

Making an informed decision means taking into account not just the fancy features on offer, but how much it will cost you to enjoy them. In terms of annual fees, the Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card has a reduced annual fee of $99 for the first year, increasing to $169 for each year after that. If you want to add additional cardholders to the account, that will cost $29 per card.

Both the purchase rate and cash advance rate on this card are relatively high, but that’s not out of the ordinary for platinum rewards cards. To avoid interest charges and make the most of the rewards and features on offer, be sure to clear your balance each statement period. If you tend to carry a balance month-to-month, a low rate card may be a better choice.

If you want to take advantage of the card’s balance transfer offer, know that it’s best to pay off the transferred balance before the introductory period ends. If you leave any part of that transferred balance unpaid, it will start to accrue interest at the higher cash advance rate, which will start to hurt pretty quickly.

Decision Time

If you are a Woolies shopper, the Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card has seriously a lot to offer, especially when you take into account its affordable annual fee. You can earn Qantas Points on your everyday shop, maximising your points-earning potential with Qantas purchases, and by converting Woolworths Rewards into Qantas Points, while enjoying some very appealing extras.

I applied for this card for the purpose of accumulating frequent flyer points. You get no points for BPay, you can't use credit for Post Billpay payments. Despite spending thousands on purchases, my accumulated frequent flyer points don't even equate to the cost of the annual fee. I will not be renewing the card. Very disappointed.

The initial credit limit is low. I was continuously hitting the limit so after waiting the minimum time (6 months) I applied for an increase. The increase was denied, they would not give the reason why, they just said to apply again in another 6 months. I pay the amount off in full every month, I suspect they don't really want customers that do that?? I know my wage would qualify me for a limit far in excess of the current one. cheers Tony

It took me ages to pick a flyer card, but I think this is a good deal. No American Express! We are now doing all the shopping & rent on this, got to be at least a couple of flights a year

I shop all the time in Woolies so this was the best choice for me. I can earn points on my weekly shop and get rewards I want. The annual fee doesn’t break the bank but the purchase rate is a bit high. Not bad if you want to do balance transfers though.

Nicole Daye

Good earning - 1 point for $1 spent everywhere. You dont need to just shop in Woolies but shopping there does get you extras. For a rewards card the annual fee is low as well. If trying to save points they dont expire and you dont get capped - awesome.

No longer available

In 2023, credit card issuer Macquarie announced that it would no longer offer Woolworths credit cards. If you already have a Woolworths credit card, it will be replaced with a Macquarie Rewards credit card between June and August 2023. We’ve kept the details below for reference. You can also compare a wide range of rewards credit cards available on Finder right now.

  • This card offers a promotional balance transfer of 0% for 14 months with no balance transfer fee.
  • Take advantage of a discounted annual fee of $99 for the first year.
  • Earn an additional Qantas point per $1 spent on selected Qantas products and services.
  • Save 10% off your shop once per month on selected dates.
  • After the promotional balance transfer period, any balances remaining will accrue interest at the variable cash advance rate (currently 20.49%)

While the balance transfer feature can help you save on interest costs, the frequent flyer program and shopping perks reward you when you spend. The earn rate is particularly competitive if you regularly shop at Woolworths. Unlike some other platinum frequent flyer cards, this doesn’t currently offer any bonus points on signup.

You can apply for the Woolworths Qantas Platinum credit card online, but make sure you meet the eligibility criteria and have the necessary information ready before you get started.

Eligibility criteria

  • Minimum income. You must earn a minimum taxable income of $30,000 p.a.
  • Residency. Applicants must be a permanent Australian resident.
  • New cardholder. The reduced annual fee is only available to new customers and you can only balance transfer debts from non-Macquarie accounts.
  • Credit history. You must have a good credit history and score. You can get a free copy of your comprehensive credit report and credit score through Finder .
  • Age. You must be at least 18 years old to apply.

Required documents

  • Personal information. Including your full name, date of birth, contact details, marital status and number of dependents.
  • Proof of identity. You'll be asked to provide proof of identity including your Australian driver's licence, passport or Medicare card.
  • Finances. You'll be asked to confirm your income and include copies of recent payslips or bank statements.
  • Employment. This includes your place of employment, role and your employer's contact details.
  • Frequent flyer number. If you already have a Qantas Frequent Flyer account, you'll need to include your membership number so your points can be debited to your account.
  • Balance transfer details. If you're conducting a balance transfer, you'll need to include how much you're transferring and details regarding the account you're moving the debt from.
  • Discounted first year annual fee. New customers can look forward to a discounted annual fee of $99 for the first year, reverting to $169 p.a. thereafter.
  • Qantas Points per $1 spent. You'll earn 1 Qantas Point for every $1 spent at Woolworths and Woolworths group stores. All other eligible purchases earn 0.5 Qantas Points per dollar spent, uncapped. Applicants who do not have Qantas Frequent Flyer membership will be provided one at no additional cost during sign up, saving $99.50.
  • Low balance transfer. If you need to repay existing debt, you can do so and save with 0% p.a. interest on balance transfers for 14 months. Any remaining debt at the end of the promotional period will attract the variable cash advance rate. You can transfer a minimum of $500 from Australian credit or store cards not issued by Macquarie. Please note that you won't earn Qantas Points on balance transfers.
  • Shopping discounts. Get 10% off your shopping at Woolworths on selected dates once per month, saving you up to $50.
  • Complimentary insurance. When you use the card to pay for eligible travel expenses, you'll get comprehensive travel insurance including unlimited overseas medical emergency cover, interstate flight inconvenience cover and more. It also provides purchase security insurance and extended warranty insurance for shoppers. See the complimentary insurance policy booklet for the eligibility requirements, exclusions and other terms and conditions.
  • Platinum perks. Get exclusive access to platinum perks such as concierge services, Visa luxury hotel collection access, member discount at Woolworths, savings on fuel and more.

Rates & fees

  • Annual fee. Outside of any promotions, this card charges a standard annual fee of $169.

  • Interest-free days. If you pay your balance in full before the end of the statement period, you can take advantage of up to 55 interest-free days on purchases.
  • International transaction fee. You can use the card overseas where Visa is accepted, but there is an international transaction fee of 3%.
  • Additional cardholders. You can request additional cardholders but you'll be charged a $29 fee each year per card.

I am enquiring about the “Platinum Perk” of entitling to fuel discounts. How is this discount achieved? Is it when you redeem points for $10 credit, or is there another discount achieved?

Thank you for your comment.

One of the advantages of using the Woolworths Platinum Credit Card is that you also will get access to some special perks. As for the fuel perks, you get to earn 2 points for every $1 spent on products purchased at CALTEX WOOLWORTHS co-branded fuel outlets. Minimum of 4,000 points is required to receive a $20 Shopping Card. More perks are found on the Woolworths card website.

I am going to purchase an overseas holiday using my Woolworths credit card in full. Do I have to complete the travel insurance forms that is complimentary with this card? If so where do I find them and are my children also covered in this policy?

[email protected]

Thanks for the comment.

Family members are only covered if they are with you during the entire trip, as with most insurers’ requirements.

It is best to contact them directly about the forms and other paperworks you would need.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Jonathan

1. To qualify for the 16000 Qantas bonus points, do you only have to make one eligible purchase by 31 July? Is there a minimum amount of purchase? 2. What is the eligibility for international travel insurance? 3. What is meant by “Interstate flight inconvenience cover”? 4. Is there a rewards program fee on top of the annual fee of $169? 5. Are self funded retirees eligible for the card?

Travel insurance helps you get your money back when things go wrong with your trip. And it remains a debate: Do you really need it, and is it worth it?

Personally, I’ve often skipped travel insurance, preferring to put the extra money toward my trip. Yet as I pulled into the airport after a winter ski trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in my SUV rental, a snowplow kicked up a rock and a crack extended across the windshield. And just like that, I got in the dreaded rental car accident .

Thankfully, I had rented my car with my Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card , which covered rental car windshield reimbursement. Note that I had also specifically opted out of the car rental's insurance coverage offered at the counter, which is a requirement in order to allow my credit card coverage to kick in. Terms apply.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now

A number of credit cards provide various types of travel insurance (including trip cancellation, trip interruption and car rental loss and damage insurance) when you use your card to pay for flights, rental cars and other travel expenses. So do you need additional travel insurance? Maybe not.

What does your travel insurance cover?

First, let’s look at the different types of coverage that your credit card may offer to help protect your trip, from your bags to your rental car to your health.

Baggage delay . If your luggage doesn’t arrive when you do, you may receive a reimbursement to offset the costs of having to purchase new attire and other items you may need. The length of delay required and the coverage offered varies by card.

Lost/damaged baggage . If your bags are lost or damaged by a carrier, or items have been stolen from your baggage, your provider may provide monetary compensation.

Trip delay . If your trip on a common carrier is delayed, you may receive monetary compensation to help cover meals, hotels, transportation and necessary purchases up to a certain amount per ticket.

Do I need additional travel insurance?

Even with the coverage listed above, some credit cards offering travel insurance benefits may not provide enough insurance for your needs. For example, if you have paid $10,000 for a vacation using your card and trip cancellation is not offered, you may want to purchase additional coverage. Likewise, if you book a very expensive trip but your card only covers $10,000 in trip cancellation coverage, you may want to consider additional coverage.

American Express offers full travel insurance options through AmEx Assurance . This specific benefit is available to all travelers and does not require an American Express card. You can pick and choose the coverage you want, and a quote will be processed based on your age, trip expense and days traveling.

For example, here's what we found when requesting insurance for a two-day trip that costs $1,000. You can decide what coverage you'd like and see the full cost of your options:

The quote we received covered 100% reimbursement for cancellation, then offered different levels for other types of coverage.

Medical protection was available for $25,000 to $100,000.

Travel accident protection was available for $250,000 to $1,500,000.

Baggage protection was available for up to $500 to $2,500.

Trip delay coverage was offered for $150 to $1,000 per day, depending on selecting basic, silver, gold or premium options.

When renting a car, be sure to check the specific requirements of your credit card, which may vary by location and type of vehicle.

So do you need travel insurance? A good rule of thumb is if the amount you could lose is more than you want to lose (or can afford to lose) if something goes wrong, get the insurance. Travel rewards cards are a lot like gyms. The best ones may come with tons of added benefits (saunas, yoga class, etc.) but they also cost a lot, usually with a big financial commitment upfront.

As a result, whether you’re considering a Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card (with its $95 annual fee) or a CrossFit membership, you probably have the same question on your mind: will I really use it enough to justify paying for it?

While there aren't any free gyms we know of, there thankfully are plenty of no-annual-fee travel rewards cards that require essentially zero commitment. And just like an ab roller or a Richard Simmons DVD, you can simply use them a few times, forget about them, and put them in a drawer until beach season. Or, you can stick with it and make them part of your daily routine—whatever works for you.

You’re also far more likely to see “instant results” with these cards, too. From 100,000-point welcome bonuses to rewards for paying rent, free travel insurance to 3X on gas, these cards offer way more than you’d expect for a fee of $0 per year.

The best no-annual-fee travel cards for April 2024

Best overall: bilt mastercard, best for travel earnings: wells fargo autograph℠ card, best for flat-rate earnings: capital one ventureone rewards credit card, best for hotel rewards: ihg one rewards traveler credit card, best for airline rewards: united gateway℠ card.

The Bilt Mastercard allows you to earn points from paying rent and transfer them 1:1 to well over a dozen different travel partners including United MileagePlus and Marriott Bonvoy. Toss in some surprisingly robust travel insurance and you have our unconventional—yet logical—choice for the best overall no-annual-fee travel card of 2024.

Why we like this card: As mentioned, the Bilt Mastercard’s most compelling feature is that it allows you to pay rent with a credit card—even if your landlord doesn’t take plastic—and avoid the transaction fee paying rent by credit card would typically incur. Then, as long as you complete five transactions each month, you’ll trigger 1X rewards on your rent payments.

Note that rewards on rent are capped at 100,000 points per year.

In terms of earning potential, if you pay the median ~$2,000 rent in the U.S., you could earn approximately 24,000 points per year which can be used to book travel in Bilt’s portal at a value of 1.25 cents per point or transferred to any of Bilt’s airline or hotel partners at a 1:1 ratio. In other words, you could likely earn a domestic flight with United or a weekend stay at Hyatt, all for simply paying rent on time.

The Bilt card also provides trip cancellation and interruption protection, trip delay reimbursement, and primary rental car insurance (terms apply)—perks you wouldn’t typically find on a no-annual-fee credit card.

With a generous welcome bonus in exchange for an attainable spend amount, 3X on travel, and a fancy name, you’d think the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card would command an annual fee of at least $95. But it doesn’t, making it a superb candidate for general travel use.

Why we like this card: The Wells Fargo Autograph offers unlimited 3X points on restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans and even your landline bill too if you have one, plus 1X points on other purchases—all without charging an annual fee. And, to make traveling a little cheaper/less stressful, you’ll also get $600 worth of cell phone protection (minus a $25 deductible) as long as you pay your phone bill with this card and secondary rental car insurance.

Cardholders can transfer points at a 1:1 ratio to Wells Fargo’s first wave of transfer partners including Air France‑KLM Flying Blue, Avianca Lifemiles, British Airways Executive Club, AerClub, and Iberia Plus and 1:2 to Choice Privileges.

But even if you aren’t a member of those loyalty programs, earning 3X on dining, travel, gas, and more is hard to pass up. You can redeem points at a value of 1 cent each to offset past purchases on your account, meaning you can wield the Autograph either as a no-annual-fee travel card or as a cash-back card effectively earning unlimited 3% back in a wide swath of useful categories.

Check out our full review of the Wells Fargo Autograph .

Sometimes, you just want a card that offers a little more than 1X on every purchase—without having to worry about what this quarter’s rotating rewards are, or whether a specific merchant qualifies as “groceries” for the purposes of your card’s rewards. If you value simplicity and the lack of an annual fee in your travel card, you’ll probably be a fan of the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card and its straightforward rewards program.

Why we like this card: The Capital One VentureOne Rewards offers 1.25X miles per dollar spent on everyday purchases and 5x miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. That’s pretty much all that you have to remember. You can also get a nice welcome bonus of 20,000 miles after spending $500 on purchases within 3 months from account opening, which is a solid payout for a very attainable spending target.

Capital One Miles can be transferred to well over a dozen airline and hotel partners, most at a 1:1 rate. Partners include Air Canada’s Aeroplan, British Airways Executive Club, Choice Privileges, Virgin Red, and Wyndham Rewards, among others. Other ways to book travel include redeeming miles through Capital One’s portal or making the purchase directly, paying with your card like normal, then using miles for a statement credit to cover the transaction.

The Venture One also offers a 0% intro APR on purchases for 15 months (after that, the variable APR will be 19.99%–29.99%). There’s an intro balance transfer fee of 3% of the amount of each transferred balance that posts to your account during the first 15 months that your account is open , then 4% per transfer for any promotional APR offered after.

Come to think of it, provided you have the excellent credit needed to apply, the VentureOne could make a great travel companion for a grad student given its simplicity, lengthy intro APR period and low spending threshold required to trigger the welcome bonus.

Check out our full review of the Capital One VentureOne Rewards .

If you’re looking for a hotel rewards card that offers the most free nights for no annual fee, wait until you read about the IHG One Rewards Traveler Credit Card. With a six-figure welcome bonus, up to 17X on stays and other compelling rewards, it’s currently the gold standard for no-fee hotel rewards.

Why we like this card: We like calling the IHG One Rewards Traveler card the “Liam Hemsworth” of travel rewards cards because it lives in the shadow of its big brother—the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card —but still delivers plenty of quality and substance in its own right (with no annual fee, to boot).

For starters, you can get a welcome bonus of 80,000 bonus points after spending $2,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening, potentially worth around $500 to $700 in IHG redemption.

Plus, enjoy up to 17X points when you stay at IHG Hotels & Resorts, instant Silver Elite status and a handy bonus where you redeem points for three consecutive nights and get the fourth night in your stay free. So, if you book a three-night stay using your welcome bonus, you’ll essentially be getting a complimentary four-night stay at a nice IHG property for no annual fee.

Check out our full review of the IHG One Rewards Traveler .

As a no-annual-fee airline card, the United Gateway℠ Card currently edges out its rival the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card by offering a more generous welcome bonus and travel insurance that the Delta card does not provide. If you fly occasionally and would like to earn miles, but aren’t willing to make the commitment of $95 or more for a mid-tier airline card with more perks, the Gateway is a strong choice.

Why we like this card: The United Gateway card offers 2 miles per $1 spent on United® purchases, at gas stations and on local transit and commuting plus 1 mile per $1 spent on all other purchases. Considering a United Mile is worth roughly around 1.2 cents these days, effectively earning 2.4 cents back on everyday purchases is a solid value proposition.

You’ll also get a welcome bonus of 20,000 bonus miles after you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open. And, you can save with a discount of 25% back on United in-flight and Club Premium drink purchases.

New cardholders will enjoy a 0% Intro APR on Purchases for 12 months, after 21.99%–28.99% variable applies.

If the United Gateway card has a small lead on the Delta Skymiles Blue Amex at this point, it soars ahead (pun intended) when you look at the included travel and shopping protections. Both cards offer secondary rental car insurance, but only the Gateway includes trip cancellation and interruption insurance, purchase protection and extended warranty protection.

So, if you’re seeking a no-annual-fee card you can use to rack up miles—and you either tend to fly United most of the time or you’re at minimum not devoted to a competing airline—the United Gateway is the card to beat.

Frequently asked questions

Which card is best for international transactions without extra charges.

Zero foreign transaction fees is actually a common benefit among travel rewards cards, including many with no annual fee. For example, neither the Bilt Mastercard nor the United Gateway card charges a foreign currency conversion fee.

What is the best travel credit card for a young person?

If you’re still paying rent, the Bilt Mastercard is an excellent choice since it can generate points from rent payments which can then be transferred 1:1 to well over a dozen airline and hotel partners. If you’d prefer a card with a welcome bonus, which the Bilt card lacks, the IHG One Rewards Traveler card currently offers a massive welcome bonus for a no-annual-fee card—potentially worth hundreds of dollars toward a future IHG hotel stay.

Is a travel card with an annual fee worth it?

Using a travel rewards card with an annual fee can be worth it as long as you’re extracting enough points and benefits to justify paying the fee each year. If you travel infrequently or just want one less fee to worry about, consider one of the no-annual-fee cards on our list above. But, the best perks and protections are typically available on cards with annual fees.

For example, the Capital One Venture X card offers a $300 annual travel credit for bookings made through Capital One Travel. If you use that every year, you’ve gone a long way toward offsetting the $395 annual fee. You also get 10,000 bonus miles, worth at least $100 toward travel, every year starting on your account anniversary.

Methodology

To bring you our top picks for the best travel rewards cards with no annual fee, the Fortune Recommends surveyed more than a dozen cards currently available from today’s top issuers. From there, we ranked each one based on the following core categories and weights:

  • Welcome bonus (10%): Some cards—even those with no annual fee—offer welcome bonuses that you can earn once you make enough purchases within a certain time frame, such as spending $1,000 within three months of account opening.
  • Travel earnings (25%): These are the point rewards you’d earn by making travel-related purchases (e.g. 3X on hotels, 2X on airfare).
  • Car rental insurance (15%): Many, but not all travel-centric rewards cards include an auto rental collision damage waiver, which allows you to decline a portion of the rental company’s insurance and save potentially up to $30 per day. We gave extra consideration to if a card offers primary rental car insurance versus secondary, because primary kicks in immediately in a covered scenario—whereas secondary only applies after your own, personal insurance.
  • Travel insurance benefits (15%): Some travel rewards cards automatically apply trip cancellation/interruption insurance, lost/delayed luggage reimbursement and even travel accident insurance on travel bookings made using the card.
  • Gas earning (5%): Since road trips remain a common form of travel, whether or not a card offers points rewards at the pump factored into our rankings.
  • Dining earning (10%): If a no-annual-fee travel rewards card offered 2X or more on restaurant purchases it favored well in this category.

The remaining 20% was based on the card’s main focus: hotel, airline or general travel rewards.

  • For general travel—points transferrable to partners (20%): Points are literally worth more if you can transfer them to certain partners, so a card’s ability to transfer rewards to airline and hotel partners factored into our rankings.
  • For hotel rewards—free award night with booking (20%): Some hotel rewards cards offer a BOGO-like perk where if you redeem a certain number of nights with points you get an extra tacked on for free.
  • For airline rewards—ability to spend towards status (20%): Most airline rewards cards allow you to earn miles, but not all of them count those miles towards your next loyalty status. If a card treated them as “qualifying miles,” it fared better in this category.

Lastly, just keep in mind that virtually every aspect of a travel rewards card—from the rewards to the welcome bonus and fee structure—is subject to change, which could impact how many miles or points you earn.

Earning up to £60,000 a year for letting Stormzy film a music video in your kitchen or Paloma Faith play with Lego in the living room might sound farfetched to homeowners unfamiliar with the shoot locations industry.

But every star, studio or big brand that wants to film in a residential property needs someone willing to offer up their home for the day - and they'll pay between £700 and £3,000 for the privilege.

Homeowners and shooting agencies have spoken with the Money team about the promises and pitfalls of working with the likes of Disney, Netflix and ITV to take advantage of this niche income stream.

Among them was Ed Reeve, a photographer from Hackney, who has had stars such as David Attenborough, Stormzy and Jim Broadbent walk through his doors in the 17 years he's been renting out his home.

"It has been a really positive experience on the whole for us. Generally, the shoot crews are really lovely people and they're very respectful of your home," said Mr Reeve, who is registered with location agency 1st Option.

He hosts between 12 and 20 productions a year. Most bring in £1,000 for a one-day shoot, but some earn him up to £3,000 per day or last multiple days.

"We've met lots of interesting people," said Mr Reeve, including Gillian Anderson, who stars in Sex Education, Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) and Claire Foy (The Crown).

After Stormzy filmed a music video, Mr Reeves said that "every grime artist wanted to shoot here".

David Attenborough once turned up early for a BBC shoot, resulting in the pair sitting down for a cup of tea and Mr Reeve introducing his three-day old daughter to the presenter.

"He held her and looked at her with delight... it was a really special moment," said Mr Reeve.

Shoots can result in scratches around the interior, but Mr Reeve said he uses some of the money to redecorate – or in one case, let a Delux advert do it for him.

'It's never free money'

Less enthusiastic about the industry was Emer Stamp, 48, a children's author from London, who has hosted for two years.

"You think, 'Oh yeah, my house is going to be rocking', and everyone comes round and goes 'Your house will be perfect', but for whatever reason, it's not.

"My takeout is it's not as easy to make money as you think."

Ms Stamp said her home had been chosen for three productions, including a Dell shoot and a Lego advert starring Paloma Faith, earning her approximately £6,000.

Hosting also puts your schedule at the mercy of production companies – and sometimes they may not show up, said Ms Stamp.

"Like anything, you think it's free money but it's never free money."

So what does make a location popular?

Becky Butler, managing director at agency Location Collective, said there is demand for average-sized family homes with a 60s/70s vibe and unusual features.

And while a lot of the homes listed by location agencies look expensive, that was far from a deal-breaker.

"All the practical side of things are as important, if not more so, than the aesthetics of the location," said Ms Butler.

Parking, easy-going neighbours and having one large room for equipment goes a long way with clients.

Getting the combination right can create "a fantastic additional income stream", said Jennifer Marshall, of Shootfactory, which has connected homeowners with everyone from Little Mix to Killing Eve.

"We have properties that through our company have earned anywhere between £20,000 and £60,000 a year."

Much of the industry is based in London but, between them, the three agencies contacted by the Money team have organised filming in Manchester, Birmingham, the Midlands, the Home Counties and coastal areas.

Both Ms Marshall and the team at Location Collective said having a neighbour willing to get in on the action can be a real selling point.

This might mean a second house on the same street for a TV show, or simply somewhere to house the production team.

"Being able to let them pretty much take over is quite key. Sometimes they might have demands like painting or moving furniture," said Lily Gonnissen, head of business development at Location Collective.

Being quick to respond to questions, contactable during the working day, and able to accommodate viewings at short notice was a top priority, said Ms Gonnissen.

"Be friendly and welcoming - brands remember a good owner," said a spokesperson for 1st Option: "And make sure the house is clean and clutter free before any shoots."

The default tariff for prepayment meters is now cheaper than other types of meter.

It follows the energy price cap update to unit rates and standing charges from 1 April.

Uswitch data shows 56% of households don't know about the change.

What do you need to know?

Prepayment meters have traditionally been a more expensive way of paying for energy - but now prepayment standing charges have been lowered to match those for direct debit customers.

Because prepay units are cheaper, people with these meters should pay around £47 less a year than those on direct debits (£1,643 versus £1,690).

Customers who pay when they get a bill are forking out the most - around 5.8p more per day on the standing charge than those with direct debits.

Should we all get prepayment meters?

As energy costs come down, suppliers like EDF Energy have now started offering fixed deals lower than the price cap - and as things stand these are the cheapest options for many.

Eon Next's Pledge tariff promises to be 3% below whatever the price cap is for a year.

There can be catches if you want to leave these fixed deals (though Octopus doesn't charge them) - so make sure you do your research.

How many people have prepay meters?

The number of prepayment meters has fallen almost 8% from the peak in 2019, but there's still more than seven million gas and electricity units in action.

In total, 195,503 prepayment meters were installed in 2023.

Are people swapping?

Uswitch has some research that says young people (18 to 34) are far more likely to go for prepay meters - 51% would consider it, compared with 5% of over-55s.

Will Owen, energy expert at Uswitch, said: "Prepayment meters have got a bad reputation among some households, but changes to the price cap mean that their default tariffs are now cheaper than standard credit meters.

"With prepayment meters, you pay for your energy before you use it, and while there are emergency provisions, it does mean it is possible to be cut off if you have not put enough money into your account.

"This means that younger consumers and vulnerable people are at greater risk of disconnecting themselves from their energy supply when money is tight.

"Direct debits also allow consumers to spread out their costs evenly throughout the year, meaning bills won't rise significantly in the winter when energy usage is highest."

We've had a mixed mailbag of comments this week - with readers getting in touch about pensions, tipping and divorce among other things.

Following this feature on divorce costs last weekend...

...we had dozens of comments...

So many people must be trapped in abusive relationships. A loan has helped me get away - covering legal costs, paying the bills/mortgage on marital home whilst being unable to stay and finding thousands for a rental. Costs so far about £8k - only one year in and at decree nisi. H
Since broken families are ever more common why isn't the government doing something to help divorcees get back on the housing ladder like first-time buyers are? Countless thousands, despite having the income, are doomed to rent expensive family homes. Men especially! Twice Divorced Of Surrey
Trust me, it costs a whole lot more than £30k, stay away from solicitors, work through it yourself. Toby
When one party will not communicate with the other, this makes the process much more expensive. Around £80k in solicitors and barrister fees. Vbkinguk

I deferred taking my state pension for five years to hopefully boost my pension, because I happened to be the last group of people to get the old state pension. Unfortunately because of the tax band freeze any benefit from the pension uplift is being eroded every year, is this fair? Chris

And finally, on Monday we suggested a cheaper way to buy herbs and spices in the supermarket - by using the world food aisle...

We had this comment...

Best money-saving practice for herbs and spices is to source them at Asian stores - not supermarkets! Pip

Spain is planning to scrap a "golden visa" scheme that grants residency rights to foreigners who make large investments in real estate.

Ending the scheme would help make access to affordable housing "a right instead of a speculative business", Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said.

The programme awards non-EU citizens investing at least €500,000 (around £429,000) in Spanish real estate - without taking out a mortgage - a special permit, allowing them to live and work in the country for three years.

In better news for Britons who hope to live abroad, Italy is allowing non-EU citizens who can work remotely to apply for a year-long "digital nomad" visa.

There's a few salary/reference based criteria to meet - read about them here...

Labour this week tried to address questions over how it would pay for key pledges  after the Tories used their idea of scrapping the non-dom status to fund a national insurance cut.

Labour had been committed to abolishing non-dom status for years - upon gaining power they planned to use the money to fund breakfast clubs for primary school children and additional appointments in the NHS.

Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves this week announced the party's plan to raise £5bn a year by the end of the next parliament...

  • Labour said it would raise £2.6bn by closing "loopholes" in the government's non-doms plan - after certain exemptions were kept in place by Jeremy Hunt;
  • Labour said the "tax gap" - the difference between the amount of money HMRC is owed and the amount it receives - had widened to £36bn in 2021-22 - £5bn more than it had been the previous year;
  • To close the gap, Labour said it would invest up to £555m a year in boosting the number of compliance officers at HMRC, increasing productivity and improving the organisation's "dire" customer service;
  • It would also consider requiring more tax schemes to be registered with HMRC to ensure they are legitimate, and renew the focus on offshore tax compliance.

The government responded by saying: "The Conservatives have introduced over 200 measures to clamp down on tax non-compliance and we are sticking to the plan to strengthen the economy so we can cut taxes, putting £900 in the pockets of the average worker and helping families to build a brighter future."

Shell is weighing up quitting the London Stock Exchange (LSE) for a move to New York over concerns its listing is currently "undervalued".

Chief executive Wael Sawan  told Bloomberg  that he was mulling "all options".

The British oil and gas giant is currently the largest company in the FTSE 100 index, and its departure from the LSE would be a significant blow to the UK stock market that is fighting to stay relevant.

There's been a run of bad news for the LSE over the past year or so. The world's largest building products manufacturer, CRH, moved to New York, while travel company Tui moved to Frankfurt. And despite the lobbying of numerous prime ministers, UK-based chip company Arm chose the NYSE.

UK lenders have seen a rise in defaults on mortgages and credit cards - with the trend expected to continue in the coming months, according to a survey.

A poll of banks and building societies by the Bank of England reveals lenders reported higher default rates on secured loans and unsecured lending in the three months to the end of February.

The rates for mortgages, credit cards and other loans, as well as loans to small to medium businesses, are all expected to rise in the next quarter.

The BoE carries out the survey every quarter as part of its role to maintain financial stability.

It also revealed increased demand for borrowing, with this also expected to climb during the three months to the end of May.

Karim Haji, global and UK head of financial services at KPMG, said the latest BoE data suggests "a more positive economic outlook hasn't fed through to household finances yet".

"Defaults across all unsecured lending increasing over the same three-month period indicates many people are still struggling to meet their day-to-day costs. Lenders will need to be vigilant and continue to offer support for borrowers in the interim," he said.

Poor software and bias toward making only small, sequential changes is one of the reasons economic forecasters at the Bank of England failed to predict and prepare for the cost of living crisis, brought about by high inflation, according to a "once in a generation" review.

The review announced last year was undertaken by the former head of the US central bank, known as the Fed, and said the quality of the Bank's economic expectations "deteriorated significantly in the past few years" due to out of date software and "excessive incrementalism".

Though the "unusually large forecasting errors" were said to be "probably inevitable", according to the review, conducted by Dr Ben Bernanke.

The problem was not unique to the Bank, rather something all central banks and private forecasters suffered from, it said.

After the UK airports with the worst delays were revealed earlier today (see post at 1.15pm), we've been looking at your rights.

If you're unlucky enough to get stuck at an airport due to a flight delay, you may wonder if you're entitled to any compensation.

The good news is you may be - in certain circumstances.

First, it's important to know what flights are covered by consumer law. These are:

  • Any flight leaving a UK airport
  • Flights operated by a UK/EU airline arriving at a UK airport
  • Flights operated by a UK airline only arriving at an EU airport

When will I be entitled to help?

You'll qualify for support if a short-haul flight under 932 miles (1,500km) is pushed back by two hours.

This rises to three hours for journeys up to 2,175 miles (3,500km).

For long-haul flights going any further than this, four hours or longer counts as a significant delay.

What support will I get?

Under UK law, airlines must give passengers who are affected by a delay of at least two hours:

  • A reasonable amount of food and drink (usually provided in the form of vouchers)
  • Refunds for the cost of two free phone calls, faxes or emails
  • Accommodation for passengers stranded overnight (usually in a nearby hotel)
  • Transport to a hotel - or their home

Will I get compensation?

Usually, airlines have to provide compensation if a person's flight arrives more than three hours late.

The exception to this is when there are air traffic control problems or extreme weather, as these issues aren't their fault.

If you agree to travel on a later flight, the airline is no longer obliged to offer food, drink or accommodation while you wait.

Thankfully, you are entitled to a full refund if you decide to abandon your journey after five hours of delays.

The length of your flight affects how much you are entitled to:

  • Short-haul flight - £220
  • Medium-haul flight - £350
  • Long-haul flight - £520 if the flight arrived more than four hours late, £260 for a delay of between three to four hours

What if I'm about to travel?

Transfer passengers who end up missing a connecting flight because their first plane was delayed are entitled to a service back to their original departure point.

But things get a little more complicated for passengers on package holidays - especially if they decide not to travel on a delayed outbound flight.

The CAA's guidance says: "You may lose your holiday too, so we recommend you contact your package organiser or the airline for further information.

"If you still want to travel then your airline must get you to your destination. You might have to be patient while they rearrange transport and rebook passengers, but the law says they must get you there."

What if my flight is cancelled?

You're entitled to a refund or replacement flight if yours is cancelled. Your rights to assistance are the same as if your flight is delayed.

If the reason for the cancellation was within the airline's control, and it was made with no more than 14 days' notice, then depending on the timings of the new flight offered you could also be entitled to compensation.

You'll be able to claim £110 and £520 depending on the length of the route and timings of the new flight.

Drivers are still feeling the strain of rising insurance premiums - but there are signs of a slowdown, according to one index.

New figures from insights firm Consumer Intelligence suggest the average quoted price of car insurance rose by 56.4% in the year to February.

This was the third-highest annual increase since its records began in 2012 - but in slightly better news for motorists, it marked a lower annual rise than the 67.2% recorded in November.

And there was only a slight rise of 0.5% when looking at the three months to February - the lowest quarterly increased since November 2021.

Drivers most commonly received a quote between £500 and £749 in February, Consumer Intelligence said. It analysed the average of the five cheapest offers from price comparison websites.

Max Thompson, the firm's insurance insight manager, said big insurance brands made "competitive movements" to reduce premiums at the start of the year.

"However, some of this was unwound in February indicating it may have been more of a tactical move than a long-term trend," he added.

Jonathan Fong, manager of general insurance policy at the Association of British Insurers, said insurers were "aware of the financial challenges customers are facing" and were working to keep prices affordable.

"Our motor premium tracker is the only collection based on the price customers pay for their policy, rather than quotes, and shows that the average motor premium increased by 25% last year to £543.

"This was largely driven by above inflation increases in the cost of repairs, thefts and replacement cars."

The Abu Dhabi-backed vehicle that had been on the brink of buying The Daily Telegraph is in detailed talks with Whitehall officials about the structure of an onward sale of the newspaper.

Sky News has learnt that RedBird IMI is negotiating with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport about whether it can convert a call option which constitutes the right to take ownership of the Telegraph and Spectator into shares in the assets prior to their purchase by a new owner.

The telecoms entrepreneur who turned Daisy Group into one of the industry's most successful private companies is closing in on the latest in a string of significant takeover deals.

Matthew Riley, Daisy's chairman, has orchestrated a £215m deal to acquire 4Com , a provider of cloud communications services to more than 17,000 corporate customers, Sky News understands.

City sources said the deal was expected to be signed within days and was likely to hand 4Com founder Daron Hutt a windfall worth more than £100m.

The Financial Conduct Authority has told motor finance firms they need to put funds aside as it continues a probe into the sector.

The City regulator also said many firms are "struggling to promptly provide the data we need" for the investigation.

A review was launched by the FCA earlier this year into whether people could be owed compensation for being charged too much for car loans, following a high number of complaints on historic agreements.

Should You Use a Credit Card Travel Portal?

Unlock the details of credit card travel portals and learn how to maximize your benefits.

Using a Credit Card Travel Portal

Using a credit card portal to book travel could help you save money and help you earn more points or redeem travel credits.

Key Takeaways

  • Credit card travel portals search across multiple travel options, giving you the power to compare prices.
  • You can use your credit card or rewards to book travel with your credit card issuer's travel portal.
  • Some cards may offer travel credits and benefits when you book using the associated travel portal.

You have many options for booking travel, whether you want to book directly with airlines and hotels, use an online travel agency or book with your credit card's travel portal. Using a credit card travel portal may allow you to take advantage of cardholder benefits and credits and give you additional choices for your booking.

Understand how to use credit card travel portals to save money on your next trip and maybe get some elevated perks along the way – but also recognize when it doesn't make sense.

What Are Credit Card Travel Portals?

Similar to online travel agencies, such as Expedia or Booking.com, credit card travel portals are online travel booking platforms. Cardholders can use credit card travel portals to browse and book travel options, including flights, hotels, rental cars and experiences using your credit card or rewards.

Credit card travel portals include:

  • American Express Travel.
  • Capital One Travel.
  • Chase Travel.
  • Citi Travel.

Some credit cards offer cardholder savings or perks when you book travel using the issuer's credit card portal, such as travel credits or cardholder privileges, including free breakfast or late checkout.

How Credit Card Travel Portals Stack Up

When you use a credit card travel portal, the amount and method of payment may be the deciding factors in how you book. Using a credit card travel portal to book travel can save you money, but not always.

We compared a midweek economy flight from Los Angeles to New York and a weeklong stay at a three-star hotel in Manhattan. In some cases, credit card travel portals were competitive, but Expedia had the lowest overall price for flight and hotel costs on this test trip.

Still, this is just one example, and travel prices can fluctuate depending on how you book. It's always a good idea to compare all of your options.

Benefits of Credit Card Travel Portals

Booking your travel with a credit card travel portal can help you earn more points or redeem travel credits. Some examples:

  • Cardholders of the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card get a $300 annual travel credit for bookings through the Capital One Travel site. When booking on the Capital One Travel site, cardholders earn unlimited 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars and 5 miles per dollar on flights. ( See Rates and Fees )
  • With The Platinum Card ® from American Express , cardholders get a $200 annual hotel credit for prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings with American Express Travel and earn five points per dollar on flights and prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel. ( See Rates and Fees )
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card holders get a $50 annual Chase Travel hotel credit and earn five points per dollar on Chase Travel purchases.

"Using the travel credits is huge," says JT Genter, editor in chief of rewards and travel tracking tool AwardWallet. "Card issuers are leaning more towards those only being accessible through the portal."

Credit card travel portal bookings may help your points go further, too. "Because I have a Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, when I use the (Chase) portal to book travel, my points get an extra 25% bump," says Chip Chinery, personal finance blogger at Chip's Money Tips. For example, you'd only pay 100,000 points for a flight or hotel that would require 125,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points to book without the points boost.

Helpful features can add up to savings on credit card travel portals. For example, Capital One Travel offers a price match guarantee. Genter used the Capital One Travel price match feature on a flight from Cairo to Marrakech, Morocco. Although he booked with Capital One Travel, an online travel agency had a better price. He was able to price match with Capital One Travel to get a travel credit.

Genter points out that cardholders of The Platinum Card from American Express can take advantage of the International Airline Program for potential savings on international flights in first, business or premium economy.

You may also get benefits for booking with credit card travel portals, particularly when booking hotels. For example:

  • Cardholders of The Platinum Card from American Express get elite benefits at participating hotels, including early check-in, room upgrades, breakfast for two, a $100 experience credit, complimentary Wi-Fi and guaranteed 4 p.m. check-out.
  • If you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve ® , you can book The Edit properties through Chase Travel and receive benefits, including daily breakfast for two, a $100 on-property credit, room upgrades, early check-in and late check-out and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Drawbacks of Credit Card Travel Portals

Travel credits and on-property perks are compelling reasons to use a credit card travel portal. However, it pays to compare pricing among your card's portal, direct booking or an online travel agency, because the lowest-priced option depends on the trip you're taking. Also, you may forfeit some benefits, as credit card travel portals are third-party bookings.

With a third-party booking, you'll have less flexibility in customer service and cancellation than you would if you booked directly. For example, if you're dealing with a delayed flight and need service from the airline, you may be directed to the travel portal customer service. You may have limited options for cancellation and how you get your money or rewards back.

Another major point to consider with third-party bookings: You generally won't be able to earn points or miles with the airline or hotel, though you can earn points with your card. Additionally, you may not be able to use elite benefits for any status you hold. For example, if you have Hilton Honors status that entitles you to a daily food and beverage credit, you're not likely to get it when you book a stay with your credit card travel portal.

When to Use a Credit Card Travel Portal

Booking travel with a credit card travel portal can make sense in some scenarios. For instance:

  • You want to compare your travel options across multiple airlines or hotels in the portal.
  • You have a travel credit available that can only be redeemed through the issuer's travel portal.
  • You have rewards you want to redeem on the portal, and booking this way offers a good redemption value.
  • You want to take advantage of benefits, such as elite hotel perks that you can get when using a credit card travel portal.
  • Your booking options on the portal are priced lower compared with other options.
  • Booking on the portal earns elevated rewards, and the prices and benefits are comparable to those of other booking options.

"It makes sense if you want to take advantage of the credits but also to earn bonus points," says Genter. "And sometimes, they have promotions such as hyper-targeted offers."
