The Ratpack team and specifically Ryan f were great for booking our dream New Zealand campervan trip. Ryan worked hard over several days trying to find the best possible deals for us and the communication was great with updates regularly. He was able to get us 2 vans that out did any other quotes that we received and we are really looking forward to our trip with Ratpack being by our side. Thanks a lot Ryan F!

Lovely people, more than helpful.

I am so stoked with the service I received from Ryan at RatPack Travel. He was so proactive and on the ball to help me with all my questions and variations. He gave me several options and gave me other things to look at to make sure I had all that I needed. Ryan did all the legwork in following up the availability of the type of van I wanted. If you are wanting to go on a Campervan holiday no matter how long or short, I would recommend RatPack Travel! They will be you support in every step of the process, in the lead up and while on the road. Thanks Ryan! You're a legend! They are a one stop shop when it comes to sourcing campervans and motorhomes from different providers! I nearly forgot to say - he got me a great deal on a newer model. ;)

Thijs and Gemma were just so lovely to communicate with and explained everything so well. Booked us our campervan seamlessly, and with a great deal too 😊 10/10 service from them both!! Couldn’t recommend more! 😊

Ben was super helpful, easy to deal with and always got back to all my questions nice and quickly, with all the campervan options out there we really didn’t know what one to go with but Ben did all the searching for us and made the whole process really simple.

Amazing and outstanding customer service, Ryan exceeded all expectations, he and his team found the perfect deal for us, if you are looking for renting a campervan in NZ or Oz, don’t look for more! Go straight to them and you’ll see you are in the best hands! 🙌

Greg was superb! We told him what we wanted in a camper van. Even with less than two weeks notice, he didn’t disappoint. We loved our camper van and it was perfect for the two of us!

Can’t recommend enough, great service! I worked with them for my trip to NZ

If you want to go on holiday in New Zealand (they also cover Aus) look no further! It was an absolute pleasure dealing with Jules who gave valuable insight into the best places to go, companies to use for rental campers and advice on what camper is best. They also managed to get us a great deal on a camper. Jules was friendly, professional and acted very quickly with no noise - just the information I needed. Thanks again!

A guide to driving your Brisbane campervan hire

Embarking on a camper hire adventure in Brisbane is always a thrill, but safety should always be your number one priority. To ensure a smooth and stress-free RV hire road trip, taking a look at these handy tips we’ve put together:

Remember, you’re Down Under now, so you’ll need to be driving on the left-hand side of the road. If you’re not used to this, you may want to practise before hitting the busy highways. Take a couple of hours to get the hang of left-side driving, so you can embark on your journey like a pro.

Size Matters

Campervans for hire are larger than regular cars, so be mindful of tight spaces when street parking and narrow roads. Take care when manoeuvring, especially in built-up areas.

Avoid Driving During Peak Times

Brisbane is known to be a bustling city with heavy commuter traffic. So we would defo recommend steering clear of urban driving during peak times, especially on routes between the city and the Gold or Sunshine Coast.

Prepare for an Adventure

If you plan on venturing into the Outback, be well-prepared. Pack plenty of water and food in case of any breakdowns. Fill up your camper with petrol whenever you get the chance, as petrol stations can be few and far between.

Listen to the Campervan Hire Team

The key to an epic, enjoyable road trip is to listen carefully to the team’s advice and instructions when you first pick up your campervan rental in Brisbane . Take notes if needed so you can be ready to hit the road with confidence.

With these safety tips in mind, you’re all set to enjoy your private motorhome hire Brisbane road trip to the fullest. Drive safely, take in the breathtaking landscapes, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Campervan hire: Frequently asked questions

Now, just in case you have any questions, here are some classic campervan hire FAQs for you:

How much does it cost to hire a campervan?

The average price for hiring a campervan in Australia can vary between $100-$200 per day. But the overall price you pay depends on a few things:

  • Your campervan
  • When you booked (booking in advance is waaayyy cheaper!)
  • When you want to hire the campervan
  • Seasons of the year can dictate the price. For example, national holidays and Christmas will naturally be more expensive. So, just let us know your travel dates and locations, and we’ll get back to you as fast as we can with the cheapest options.

How old do I need to be to hire a campervan in Australia?

Most campervan hire companies in Australia only accept a minimum age of 21 to hire a campervan. However, some will allow the minimum age to be 18 but these are few and far between.

What driving licence do I need to rent a campervan in Australia?

You don’t need an Australian driver’s licence to hire a campervan, but you’ll need to present a standard driver’s licence that complies with Australian law when collecting the campervan.

So, providing you have a valid class C (car) driving licence, you’ll be good to go. And remember, always keep that licence on you!

What do I need to bring when collecting my campervan in Australia?

When collecting the campervan, you will need a credit or debit card in the name of the driver and all drivers are required to display their driver’s license valid within 12 months.

Is there a minimum rental period when hiring a campervan in Australia?

The minimum rental depends on the campervan hire provider, as some companies have minimum hire periods. Normally the minimum hire period is between 5-7 days. However, extensions can be arranged, especially over the holidays, with some providers allowing a full fortnight’s rental.

Just let us know your dates, and we’re sure we can find you the ideal provider.

Can you sleep anywhere in a campervan in Australia?

Unfortunately, you can’t just park where you want in Australia and sleep in your camper. Keeping your campervan in the wrong place can land you with some steep fines, like in parking lots or no parking zones in big cities.

So, try to find RV-friendly locations or campsites when you’re on the road. Permitted parking areas include national parks, roadside campervan camping, beachside locations, private parks for campervans and certain rest areas.

Can I pick up and drop off my campervan at different locations?

Yes. Depending on your preferred route, we arrange for you to pick up your campervan in one location and drop it off at a different destination.

Once agreed, you’re expected to deliver the camper at the designated time and location. If you want to change course for any reason, we’d need to communicate and agree with the campervan hire provider. We don’t recommend this approach as most providers won’t allow it, while it will potentially cost more.

So, be sure of your route and just hire another one in pursuit of your next adventure!

Are unlimited kilometres included in my Australia campervan rental?

Yes, unlimited kilometres are arranged with a campervan hire provider. Some campervan hire companies will allow unlimited kilometres for specific campervans and not others. For example, some will include unlimited kilometres in two-wheel drives but not four-wheel drives.

When is the best time to hire a campervan in Australia?

Regarding prices, the most cost-effective time to hire a campervan will be during the Australian winter months (June, July, and August). Christmas time and New Year is the most expensive time.

We recommend you travel during the autumn and spring months (March, April, and May – September, October, and November,) when it’s not too hot or as expensive.

What is the speed limit in Australia?

When hitting the open road, you can expect 100km/h in the city and 50km/h in suburban areas. Maximum speed limits in most states get capped at 110km/h. Speed limits are well signposted, and with Google Maps or Waze, you can see the limits on your screen.

But hiring a camper is not about speed. So, just relax, enjoy the ride, and remember, there is more to life than making it faster!

What extra charges will I need to pay when I return my campervan?

Hopefully none. It’s really up to you. Return your camper in a nice clean condition without any fines and expect no additional charges. This standard includes cleaning and emptying the toilet, a full tank of gas and just a general tidy-up so the camper condition is what it was when you first picked it up. Simple.

But if you don’t return the camper in a respectable condition or it’s been damaged in any way, then no doubt expect some additional charges.

But hey. Accidents can happen, and it’s not the end of the world so don’t panic if it does. That’s what the deposit is for.

Just be careful, obey the laws and stay honest and respectable, like when borrowing anything from anyone.

And before you drive away, if you notice any defects, tell your provider there and then. If you see the odd chip or scratch later, take a picture and notify us. Most campervan providers will note all these features previously as a measure of good practice.

Brisbane Camper Rental Prices

From cheap campervans to luxury motorhomes—compare prices to find a vehicle that suits your budget and travelling style.

Most campervan rentals in Brisbane cost between AUD $50 to $450 per day (most fees included).

Rental rates can vary depending on:

  • Camper size
  • Booking length
  • Time of year
  • Intended pick-up and drop-off point
  • One-way rental or return

Rental companies offer three main camper types:

A budget-friendly van comes with a retractable outdoor kitchen and a fold-out sofa that converts into a cosy bed. Upmarket campervans have high roofs so you can stand inside and internal kitchens to shelter from the elements. Some even squeeze in an ensuite with a toilet and shower.

A 4WD camper lets you venture off the well-trodden path, including sandy locales like Moreton and Fraser Island. While you can explore more in a 4WD, you’ll have to make do with limited space and basic amenities. Travellers sleep in a rooftop tent or swag on the ground.

A motorhome refers to a larger, more luxurious vehicle boasting most (if not all) of the comforts of home. Expect a spacious sitting room, a flat-screen TV, a well-equipped kitchen, and an indoor en suite with a toilet and hot shower.

The cheapest months for hiring a campervan in Brisbane are usually May to November. Historically, May has the lowest rates, while December has the highest rates. This period is also the milder part of the year in Queensland, and many find it a more comfortable time to travel with the cooler temps and lower humidity levels.

Brisbane Airport Campervan Hire

While there are no camper rentals directly at the terminal at Brisbane Airport (BNE) , there are several campervan rental companies within 5–12 km.

Jucy offers a complimentary shuttle with your rental. The other suppliers' depots are easily accessible by taxi or Uber.

The Self-drive Holiday in Brisbane

A kitted-out camper is the best way to explore Brisbane and beyond. For a reasonable daily rate, you’ll cruise between jaw-dropping natural attractions and sleep in spectacular campsites.

While sightseeing within city limits doesn’t require a camper, a cosy van is the best way to explore the outlying region. Here’s why:

Affordable: With your accommodation and transport rolled into one, you’ll save big bucks on hotel and hire car expenses.

Self-catering: Eating out is expensive in Australia. s any good camper comes with a well-equipped kitchen, you can save stacks of cash by cooking on the go.

Convenience: No need to swing back to Brisbane after a long day of sightseeing. A motorhome lets you plan a time-efficient route and camp near those must-visit sites.

Freedom: Forget about pre-booking hotels and setting strict itineraries. The campervan lets you wander around Queensland on a whim.

Amenities: Your kitchen, charging points, toilet, and shower are always within easy reach.

Remember these helpful tips when driving around Brisbane in a campervan rental:

  • All traffic moves on the left-hand side.
  • Seatbelts and child restraints are compulsory.
  • Carry a valid driver's licence when travelling.
  • Traffic moves clockwise around the roundabout.
  • Watch out for wildlife, especially around dawn, dusk and when travelling at night. Country roads and long stretches of the open road are notorious for crossing wildlife.
  • The blood alcohol content limit in QLD is 0.05%.
  • Default speed limits in Brisbane are 50 km/h for built-up residential areas and 100 km/h for roads in rural areas unless indicated otherwise. It is not uncommon to drive through areas such as the Brisbane CBD with speed limits of 40km/h. School zones also have speed limits reduced to 40 km/h during certain hours on school days. Always pay attention to posted speed limit signs and adjust your speed accordingly.

Are there toll roads in Brisbane?

Tolls apply to the following roads:

  • Gateway Motorway
  • Logan Motorway
  • Clem Jones Tunnel (CLEM7)
  • Go Between Bridge
  • AirportLinkM7
  • Toowoomba Bypass

These toll roads are equipped with electronic tolling systems, such as the e-tag or e-toll, which automatically deduct the toll amount from a linked account as vehicles pass through. It is important to be aware of the tolls and associated payment methods when driving in Brisbane.

Travel Tips for Brisbane

RV travel hit the mainstream in Australia as an affordable way to explore. Thrifty travellers can whittle down their expenses even further with the following tips:

Avoid peak seasons : Queensland gets inundated with winter-fleeing residents from Australian colder southern states. Avoid school holidays (especially in winter), plus major dates like Christmas/New Year and Easter.

Book early : Motorhome rental companies, much like airlines, base their rates on availability. Reserve early to secure the best possible deal.

Consider your needs: Is a flashy oversized motorhome really necessary? Settling for a cheap and cheerful budget campervan will slash your daily spend.

Cut back on backtracking: Fuel doesn’t come cheap these days. Use your favourite navigation application to plan a rough route that minimises backtracking. As a nifty bonus, you’ll also reduce time spent behind the wheel.

Plan your fuel stops: Some Australian service stations charge significantly more than others. Use mobile apps like Fuel Spy to identify the best deals in your area.

Get a travel buddy: Rolling with a crew lets you share rental and fuel expenses. If your besties don’t share your adventurous spirit, try posting your plans on social media—be sure to vet all applicants thoroughly.

Consider your campsites: Ritzy beachfront caravan parks with top-end amenities charge big bucks. On the other hand, basic bush camps boast abundant space and breathtaking views for a fraction of the cost.

Free camp wherever possible: Queensland has a solid selection of motorhome-friendly free camps, from gorgeous waterfront sites to no-frills highway rest areas.

Self-cater: High wages mean restaurants must charge a small fortune in Australia. Cooking your meals will save you a tidy sum each day (good thing your camper has a kitchen).

Find free activities: Ticketed tourist attractions tend to be pricey in Australia, but hiking doesn’t cost a dime. If space permits, BYO mountain bike, inflatable kayak, surfboard, and/or snorkel for more free thrills.

Blessed with 283 cloudless days per year, Brisbane is among the sunniest cities on earth. A warm subtropical climate and relatively little rainfall make it a great place to visit any time of year.

The Southern Hemisphere’s spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) bring the most temperate weather. Daily average highs and lows hover around 26°C / 17°C during both seasons.

Travellers arriving in October will be greeted by a sea of blooming purple jacaranda trees . April brings abundant sunshine and reduced humidity, while May and September see the Brisbane events calendar crank into full gear. Both these balmy shoulder seasons entail thinner crowds and, consequently, lower prices across the board.

The Aussie winter (June to August) is high season in Queensland as southerners head north to escape the chill. Expect pleasant average temperatures of 23°C / 11°C in Brisbane (the locals will tell you it’s cold) and minimal rainfall. However, you’ll have to contend with crowded campsites and higher rental rates.

Summer (December to February) can get stiflingly hot in Brisbane. Although 29°C / 22°C is the January average, some days max out at 40°C. Sticky humidity and frequent rain (an average of 9 wet days per month) prompt some locals to seek shelter indoors.

Can’t hack the heat? Heading uphill to the hinterlands offers much-needed respite. Furthermore, surfers happily withstand the sweaty weather as summer brings the biggest swells.

The Queensland climate becomes increasingly tropical the further you venture north. Expect wetter weather and higher humidity, especially once you pass the Tropic of Capricorn around Rockhampton ).

Peak sailing season in the Whitsundays is September to October, though shoulder seasons (April to August and November) offer favourable conditions. Surfers should note they won’t find any sizeable waves north of Seventeen Seventy.

The ideal timeframe for a road trip departing Brisbane depends on where you go.

Determined to cover all the scenic spots listed in this guide? You’re going to need a month or two.

But if you’re content with covering small sections, you can enjoy an extraordinary adventure in just five days. Here’s a sample South East Queensland-Northern NSW itinerary:

Spend a day sussing out Brisbane’s top sites , then overnight at the Plunkett Green at Tamborine farm stay. Wake up among curious barnyard creatures, then smash out a soul-soothing waterfall hike (Curtain Falls is our top pick) before hitting a high-altitude winery (try Witches Falls) for lunch. Cruise to Lamington National Park for a ridgeline walk, then settle at O’Reilly’s Campground .

Double back towards NSW, stopping off at the Natural Bridge and your choice of other Springbrook National Park wonders. Mosey over to Mt Warning Rainforest Park and spark up a campfire. Get up early to see the sunrise hit Mt Wollumbin—the first place in Australia to catch the sun’s rays.

Swing by Nimbin to relive the hippy era and pop into Nightcap National Park to admire Protestors Falls. Cruise towards the coast and spend the evening in the boho haven of Byron Bay or its laidback brother, Brunswick Heads. Return to Brisbane via the coastal route, stopping for lunch in Pottsville or Kingscliff.

A similar timeframe could see you bouncing between stunning Sunshine Coast surf beaches and its fertile hinterlands. Tack on a few extra days if you want to include the dreamy town of Seventeen Seventy.

Allow at least two weeks for the long road trip to Airlie Beach —a 26-hour return journey. Break up the drive in both directions with strategic stopovers en route.

Parking a Campervan in Brisbane

Free on-street parking is available in most outer suburbs, though fees and restrictions apply once you get closer to the CBD.

Keen to explore the city centre without paying pricey parking fees?

Our top tip is The Dock D parking area at Brisbane Northshore, located a stone's throw from the famous Eat Street precinct. You will find ample free parking spots to accommodate small to large campervans and motorhomes here. It does get busy every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night (so be sure to get there early) in line with the opening hours of Eat Street, but you will find an accessible parking spot at any other time.

The parking lot is a short distance away from most campervan rental depots located around the airport. It’s a perfect spot to park for the day if you want to explore Brisbane’s city highlights. Simply park and walk 2 minutes to the Hamilton Northshore Ferry terminal, where you can hop onboard a CityCat Ferry and take the 50-minute ride to Brisbane's centre. Don’t forget to pre-purchase a go card for travel by bus, ferry or train.

The Park ‘n’ Ride program lets you park the whole day for free at other numerous public transport hubs around the city. From there, purchase a low-cost bus, train, or ferry ticket to the centre and back.

Queensland State law forbids sleeping overnight in a vehicle outside of a designated campsite. Furthermore, the Brisbane City Council and most Queensland Local Government Associations have bylaws prohibiting the practice.

Council rangers and police enforce anti-camping regulations somewhat sporadically within Brisbane. However, in desirable tourist destinations—especially the Sunshine Coast and Airlie Beach—stringent enforcement entails early morning interrogations and midnight patrols.

About half a dozen holiday parks offer paid campsites in Brisbane. The closest reputable option is Brisbane Holiday Village , a 15-minute drive from the CBD. If you’d rather camp in a tranquil natural setting, try the Karingal Scout Campsite instead—it’s 35 minutes from the CBD.

Hugh Muntz Park and Tully Memorial Park both offer designated free camping on the outskirts of the city. Expect to drive 30-40 minutes to get downtown.

A respectable selection of designated free camps resides around Queensland, from lakeside digs to homely country hotels and those ubiquitous highway rest areas. Here are some of our favourites:

  • Lake Elphinstone Campground (Mackay)
  • Little Yabba Park West (Kenilworth)
  • Hideaway Hotel (Tiaro)
  • Cruice Park (Woodford)
  • Calliope River Rest Area (Gladstone)

The best campervan for you

Campervan and rv hire in brisbane.

Campervan and RV hire in Brisbane is an incredible way to experience Queensland and beyond. With the Sunshine and Gold coasts on either side of Brisbane, the area has breathtaking coastlines and epic natural wonders that you can easily reach when hiring a campervan.

Brisbane National Parks

North of Brisbane and a short drive in your campervan, you can find the incredible Great Sandy National Park. The main attractions are great walks, scenic views, and unspoiled beaches.

Bribie Island National Park is accessible in a campervan, thanks to a bridge. Whitesand beaches, beautiful scenery, and lots of wildlife, like kangaroos, are a few of the points that make the park so unique.

Further south, past the iconic Byron Bay and toward Sydney, you can find Bundjalung National Park. Incredible wildlife, rainforests, and trails that take in stunning natural scenery are serious highlights. There are also paddleboarding, swimming, and first-rate beaches.

Brisbane Coastline, Lakes, and Rivers

Brisbane gives you access to Queensland's 7000 km coastline. Eastern Australia is well known for its fantastic beaches, which make coastline road trips so popular.

To the south, you can access Sydney and Melbourne by the coast. Many campervan itineraries are built around taking in the coast and its spectacular scenery while connecting with these big cities.

Brisbane also has a lot of lakes that you can experience with a campervan. One of the most notable is Lake Mackenzie, on Fraser Island, in southwest Queensland. Lake Eden is another excellent choice, with great walks, wildlife, and playgrounds. For something a bit more obscure, you can try Lake Dunn and check out the incredible Sculpture Trail.

Queensland has some great rivers too. Cooper Creek is amazing. You can travel along parts of it in your campervan and witness places like The Valley of the Monks, Cusarare Falls, and Lake Arareco.

The Warrego River, which is in New South Wales, is another fantastic campervan destination. It's beautiful and contains a lot of activities too, like kayaking, bird watching, cycling, walks, and swimming. The Parro river is also in New South Wales, with bushwalking, birdwatching, and fishing being popular activities for adventurers.

Campgrounds Near Brisbane

Campervan in Brisbane sets you up to explore Queensland and New South Wales. However, finding a spot to camp is incredibly important. Many of the best sites are very popular, so it's essential to book ahead when planning your itinerary. For more tips on planning an itinerary, read our helpful blog post, Road Trips for Beginners .

Bribie Island Caravan Park is an excellent choice if you're visiting Bribie Island. It's a perfect place for campervan vehicles, with excellent facilities, like a tennis court, pool, mini-golf course, games room, and more.

The Dingo Van and RV Park is another outstanding option. It's close to the Dawson Range State Forest, the clean campsite, the hosts are friendly, and the campfire singalongs are legendary.

Finally, the Elliott Heads Holiday Park is worth the stay. Modern facilities, free vegetable gardens, and great locations near the coast are just some of the things that make this site very special for your road trip. It's a peaceful spot to relax, but there are lots of nearby activities, like fishing and surfing, if you're looking for a campervan adventure.

No road trip of the Australian east coast is complete without a trip to Brisbane.

As the capital of and the most populous city in Queensland, Brisbane is a popular tourist destination known for its South Bank Parklands, botanic gardens, koala sanctuary and cultural museums and exhibitions.

The state of Queensland is also home to plenty of other popular Australia destinations including the Gold Coast, Byron Bay, the Great Barrier Reef, and Cairns .

Renting an RV in Brisbane is a gateway to exploring these other amazing places. But before we start on this epic road trip, we need a vehicle!

But when there’s so many choices out there it can be hard to know where to look, so we’ve done some of the graft for you!

Here’s our top 10 recommendations for the best campervan and RV rentals in Brisbane.

It’s sort of like Airbnb but for vehicles. You can meet the host before booking, and then hire directly from the owner.

Maui Motorhomes Brisbane RV Rentals

As the largest motorhome rental company in the continent of Australasia, Maui Motorhomes has to be top of our list when it comes to Brisbane RV rental firms.

They have 10 pick up and drop of locations nationwide, and are a well trusted, well renowned brand.

They have a 24/7 reservations team on hand to help you at any hour, and any stage of your booking or rental. So if you’re finalising those last trip details in the early hours you’re safe in the knowledge there’s still going to be someone on hand to help.

Before you collect your vehicle, there’s the option to check in online which makes the process as efficient as possible, getting your road trip off to a smooth start (which is what we all want isn’t it?!)

Maui Motorhomes work with the THL road trip app which is super helpful for camper user advice, as well as road trip planning. The app’s best feature has to be offline maps, the #1 road trip necessity.

Their Brisbane branch is only a 10 minute car journey from the airport, and they're also the best option for luxury motorhome hire in Brisbane.

2. Outdoorsy - Best variety of RV rentals in Brisbane

  • Pick up/drop off location/s - everywhere!
  • Price range - $-$$$$
  • Best suited for - everyone!

Outdoorsy Brisbane Camper Rentals

I’ve already touched on Outdoorsy and how it works earlier on.

They’re one of the best loved and most well-known RV marketplaces out there , getting the 17 million RVs that lie dormant for 95% of the year back out on the road.

Meeting the host allows you not only to ask more in depth questions about the vehicle, but you can also connect with like minded adventurers, and get first hand recommendations for your Brisbane trip.

See if your vehicle comes with the offer of drop off and set up. Some hosts will drop vehicles off at an address of your choice, or sometimes hosts will drop off and set up a vehicle at an RV park, so all you have to do is turn up.

When it comes to prices, Outdoorsy offers some of the cheapest campervan hires in Brisbane!

There really is something for everyone, as this rental platform has every kind and size of vehicle you can imagine!

To find an example of a Brisbane RV rental on Outdoorsy I’ve done a quick search for a vehicle suitable for 2 adults, with a full kitchen, sink, dining table, shower and a TV.

For $103 a night, you can rent this 2020 Renault Master Class C , which comes equipped with an outdoor shower, solar panels, and ample storage space.

The rental comes with 200 free miles per day, and there’s a prep fee and refundable security deposit to pay when booking.

You have the chance to chat with host David before deciding whether or not to book. Whilst the pick up location is Tugun in Queensland, the hosts will deliver the vehicle to anywhere within a 100km radius, for $1.66 per km.

Just keep in mind that the accessories in your campervan will differ depending on which vehicle you choose, so make sure you check your motorhome features in advance.

Brisbane Campervan / RV Rental FAQs

How much does it cost to rent an rv in brisbane.

On average the price for RV rental in Brisbane varies from as little as $60 all the way up to $300-350 per day.

Of course prices vary for a variety of reasons. Travelling in peak times is of course more expensive than renting during the low season.

Booking in advance can often come in cheaper, and of course the size and class of RV , as well as the facilities and amenities included will affect the cost of the rental.

It’s important to remember that the RV rental fee alone isn’t a true reflection of the cost of a road trip.

Yes, you have your vehicle, accommodation and often cooking all sorted, however there are plenty of other costs involved in renting an RV, such as tolls, insurance, taxes and fuel.

How old do you need to be to hire an RV in Brisbane?

Unlike some US and UK firms, you don’t have to be as old as 25 to rent an RV in Brisbane. Most firms will rent to anyone over 21.

In fact, some of the firms above rent to those as young as 18.

If you're looking to rent a campervan in Brisbane, just keep in mind that some firms charge extra to renters aged 18-20.

However, a few of the companies we’ve recommended above come with no young driver fees.

Can you park an RV anywhere in Brisbane?

In Queensland you can’t camp overnight in rest areas, however you're allowed to stay overnight in a rest area, as long as you stay in your camper.

The Queensland government states you aren’t permitted to stay for longer than 20 hours in a rest area.

Of course another great option is staying at campsites, or RV/caravan parks. There are plenty of free camping spots available throughout Queensland too.

Which RV rental will you go for?

As you can see, there are plenty of Brisbane campervan rental companies to choose from!

We hope this guide has helped you with your vehicle search, and you're now feeling a little more prepared for your Queensland/Aussie road trip.

How does the bond/excess on a rental vehicles work?

When it comes to security bond options it can get quickly very confusing…so let’s talk about it and provide as much information as we can for you.

Basically, the security bond is how much you need to have available on your Visa/Mastercard credit card (please note that we don’t accept cash cards) at the time you hire your vehicle.  We will pre-authorise this amount, which means placing a hold on the funds for approximately 14 days, we do not actually deduct the funds at this time.

In the event your vehicle or third-party property is damaged, the amount of the security bond will be deducted from your credit card account and you will need to pre-authorise a 2 nd  security bond before you continue with your hire.

You can choose different options to reduce the amount of your security bond as outlined below.

IMPORTANT:  In the event any damage is caused to your vehicle or third-party property by you breaching our Terms and Conditions or the damage is caused due to one of the Exclusions listed below, the amount that is payable by you could be in excess of the security bond that you have chosen.

Do I need to carry spare parts for the car?

You might want to carry a couple of hoses or belts, but unless you are mechanically minded these won’t do you any good. Always carry plenty of spare water – especially if you are planning to travel in Western Australia or the Northern Territory!

All our vehicles come with 24 hour road side assistance. On top of this, you can count on the generosity of the Australians to help you out of a bind.

Is it legal for people who are not Australian residents to own a car?

There is no problem for visitors to Australia to own a car. You still need to follow the Australia road rules and we highly recommend an international driving license if you are planning to buy a car…

Do I need a special license?

You may travel with a valid international drivers license, or any full, valid license from your country of residence. A translation of your national drivers license may be required.

How many people can fit in each vehicle?

Seat belts are mandatory in Australia. The number of passengers depends on the number of seat belts – which depends on the vehicle. Driving/riding in a car without a seatbelt or driving with more passengers than seatbelts each result in on the spot fines.

Where can I find all the information I need and how can I contact Travellers Autobarn?

Brisbane's climate is a subtropical bliss, with warm sunshine throughout the year. With an average high temperature of 26 degrees and a low of 16, and more than 300 days of sunshine a year, Brisbane's climate is perfect for exploring the great outdoors. We recommend visiting Brisbane between May and October, this timing avoids the summer humidity and rainfall. Because Brisbane is so sunny all year round, it's important to make sure you always wear a hat, sunscreen, and glasses to stay protected, even on cloudy days.

Summer in Brisbane (December – February)

During summer, average temperatures range from 21-30 degrees and the city has its highest rainfall, which can mean it brings thunderstorms and the occasional flood with it.

Autumn in Brisbane (March-May)

Autumn waves the end of the hot summer, average temperatures drop between 15-25 degrees, and the climate becomes less humid with less summer rain.

Winter in Brisbane (June – August)

Winter in Brisbane is generally dry with mild temperatures ranging between 11-21 degrees. Mornings can be crisp but evenings rarely get cooler than 9 degrees.

Spring in Brisbane (September – November)

Spring in Brisbane is similar to Autumn, with average temperatures between 15-25 degrees. Warm sunny days are balanced with cool sea breezes.

Brisbane's subtropical climate offers the perfect setting to immerse yourself in the array of different experiences on offer through Brisbane's events.

Cheap Van Hire in Brisbane

Top tips for hiring a van in brisbane.

  • The benefit of hiring a people carrier when visiting Brisbane is that you have the freedom of experiencing the luxury of the city without any limitations. You can drive yourself around the city and its outskirts at any time, whenever you want. Driving from Brisbane International Airport (BNE) to the city centre will only take you around 15min in a people carrier, while using public transportation like the train will take you roughly 30min to get to the city centre.
  • For Brisbane visitors flying in who would love to hire a people carrier at the airport, Brisbane International Airport has a number of car hire companies with desks within the airport. You can find the counters for Brisbane people carrier hire on the ground floor, across the luggage claim area, and the vehicles are located in the parking bay nearby. There are other companies that do not have a counter at the airport, but they also offer shuttle services, where you will be driven by the company's staff to their pickup location.
  • It is interesting to drive in Brisbane, since their roads are well maintained. However, don’t be carried away; make sure you are always driving on the left-hand side of the road on a freeway or highway. Choose a lane and speed and stick to it, if you are going to drive to the rural areas, be aware of wild animals. It is advisable to obtain a GPS navigation system as well, to help you identify the roads while driving in the rural areas.
  • It is hard to drive a people carrier hire in Brisbane during the peak hours. This usually occurs from 07:00 to 09:00 and then it reduces, so you can plan your driving for then; however, it starts again later in the evening, roughly 16:00 to 19:00, so it lasts a bit longer at this time. You should avoid the suburbs and driving into the city during these hours. Driving near any school during the pick-up and drop-off time is also not advisable due to traffic congestion.
  • 25% of our users found a people carrier hire in Brisbane for $105 or less
  • Book your people carrier hire in Brisbane at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • November is typically the cheapest month to hire a van in Brisbane, with prices around $64 per day. The most expensive month is September, with average prices of $100 per day.

FAQs About Hiring a Van in Brisbane

Get yourself a Brisbane people carrier hire whenever you are visiting with your family or friends. They are larger and more comfortable and can accommodate a larger number of people, plus the luggage. You could, however, also opt for an SUV; driving to the countryside for adventure, you will need a four-wheel drive, as they are weather friendly and can endure the rough roads. What is the speed limit in Brisbane?

The general speed limit is 50 km/h around urban and other built-up areas, and this drops to 40 km/h in residential and school zones; however, the speed limit changes a lot so be aware and always be on the lookout for speed limit signs. You can generally drive at 60 km/h on the main roads and 100-110 km/h on motorways.

Where are the best parking places in Brisbane?

Some recommended parking places for a Brisbane people carrier hire are the pay and park areas. There are also private car parks that are more secure, which will give you peace of mind when you park at such places. At places like King George Square car park, 480 Queen’s Street car park and Wilson car park, you can park for about A$ 15 per day depending on the company; other places can charge up to about A$ 25. However, there are free parking spaces in the CBD, such as the suburban shopping centre car park. The Brisbane Botanical Gardens

The City Botanic Gardens, located not far from the Brisbane waterfront, is no exception to the rule of Australia’s magnificent botanical gardens. A small island of greenery right in the center, don’t hesitate to stroll through a tamed part of Australian flora. In it, you will even find a superb bamboo corner and an avenue of weeping fig trees.

The Eat Street Market

Visit the “Eat Street” market which takes place on Fridays and Saturdays from 4pm to 10pm and on Sundays from 4pm to 9pm. At this market, containers have been set up as stands. These are mainly food stalls (Greek, Italian, Asian, etc.). This market boasts a unique atmosphere, with small concerts, fairground attractions, and a retro feel adding to its quirky charm, all set along the river.

The Fortitude Valley neighbourhood

One of Brisbane’s liveliest neighbourhoods is the Fortitude Valley area in the north of the city. This area has some of the best restaurants in the city. It’s also the perfect place to go out at night and party. During the day, the Brunswick Street Mall, located on a pedestrian street, is popular with locals and tourists for its various stores and cafes. In the same area, you will also discover Brisbane’s Chinatown. Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge is within walking distance of the Fortitude Valley neighbourhood.

The Botanical Garden of Mt. Coot-Tha

Located just outside the city center, discover Brisbane’s second botanical gardens, Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt. Coot-tha. A beautiful park with many sights to see including a butterfly greenhouse, rainforest walks, towering trees, and a small lake. Enjoy a breathtaking view of Brisbane and its surroundings from the summit lookout of Mount Coot-Tha, located near the Botanical Gardens

North Stradbroke Island

Only 30 km from Brisbane is North Stradbroke Island, the second largest sand island in the world! This island is accessible by ferry from the port of Cleveland. The journey takes about 40 minutes. Take some time to unwind at one of the many beaches on the island, including Flinders Beach, Main Beach, Frenchmans Beach, and Cylinder Beach, each offering breathtaking ocean views.

Moreton Island

Above North Stradbroke Island, you can explore Moreton Island. This island, a little more touristic than North Stradbroke, is located about 40 km from Brisbane. Moreton Island does not have any developed roads. For this reason, it is preferable to leave its discovery to a one day excursion. Once on the island, there are many activities available, including snorkeling to discover the wrecks of “Tangalooma”. You can rent a gyropode (“segway”) or a bicycle.

The best campervan for you

Campervan and motorhome hire in brisbane.

Campervan and motorhome hire in Brisbane is an incredible way to experience Queensland and beyond. With the Sunshine and Gold coasts on either side of Brisbane, the area has breathtaking coastlines and epic natural wonders that you can easily reach when hiring a campervan.

Brisbane National Parks

North of Brisbane and a short drive in your campervan or motorhome hire, you can find the incredible Great Sandy National Park. The main attractions are great walks, scenic views, and unspoiled beaches.

Bribie Island National Park is accessible in a campervan hire, thanks to a bridge.

Brisbane also has a lot of lakes that you can experience with a campervan and motorhome hire.

You can travel along parts of it in your campervan or motorhome hire and witness places like The Valley of the Monks, Cusarare Falls, and Lake Arareco.

The Warrego River, which is in New South Wales, is another fantastic destination. It's beautiful and contains a lot of activities too, like kayaking, bird watching, cycling, walks, and swimming. The Parro river is also in New South Wales, with bushwalking, birdwatching, and fishing being popular activities for adventurers.

Campgrounds Near Brisbane

Campervan and motorhome hire in Brisbane sets you up to explore Queensland and New South Wales.

It's a perfect place for campervan and motorhome hire vehicles, with excellent facilities, like a tennis court, pool, mini-golf course, games room, and more.

The Dingo Van and Motorhome Park is another outstanding option. It's close to the Dawson Range State Forest, the clean campsite, the hosts are friendly, and the campfire singalongs are legendary.

Finally, the Elliott Heads Holiday Park is worth a look. Modern facilities, free vegetable gardens, and great locations near the coast are just some of the things that make this site very special. It's a peaceful spot to relax, but there are lots of nearby activities, like fishing and surfing, if you're looking for some adventure.

Schedule your van hire now, and if you come across a cheaper offer before your rental starts, simply bring in the details when you pick up your van.*

When you book with Abel, you don’t have to worry about unexpected costs tacked on to your bill either.

We keep our customers happy with upfront pricing.

Your total van hire costs will include:

  • Your daily/weekly hire charge : This is calculated as a cost per day figure. Because this rate lowers the longer you hire your van, it’s worthwhile to check the cost difference between renting for the exact amount of time you think you’ll need the van, and giving yourself a few days lee way.
  • Distance charge: The first 100kms you travel are free, so if you’re just going between suburbs you may not incur any distance charge. For trips exceeding 100km, we sell additional 100km bundles for your convenience.
  • Bond: On the day you collect your van, your credit card will be charged with the total rental cost plus an additional $450 rental bond. This rental bond will be released by your financial institution once you have brought your vehicle back in the same condition as you picked it up (between 7-21 working days).
