Trek Marlin 4 is the second cheapest model in Trek’s mountain bike range, at just $630. 

This stylish, modern-looking hardtail is a solid introductory bike for day-to-day riding, commuting, and leisurely weekend spins on gravel and dirt trails. 

Although it looks the part, the Marlin 4 can’t handle actual mountain trails, as the low-performance fork won’t take much abuse.

The Trek Marlin 4 2022 is the same as the 2023 model. It has a basic 3×7-speed Shimano Altus/Tourney groupset and Tektro mechanical disc brakes, a typical pairing for the price range. The SR Suntour XCE 28 isn’t worth much on mountain trails but takes the sting out of bumpy gravel trails and roads.

Trying to decide whether to buy the Trek Marlin 4? Then you’ve come to the right place.

Buying a new bike is never easy. So I’ve got a ton of detailed info in this review to make the whole decision making process a little easier for you – basically I’ve got everything you need in this article to enable you to go, “Yep, this is the right bike for me”, or “Nope, gotta move along to the next one on the list”. Firstly, I’ve got a full spec list for the Marlin 4, listing every component, so that you can compare the bike against others. Either other bikes from the Marlin range ( like the Trek Marlin 5 or the 6 ) or maybe even a different type of bike, such as the FX or Dual Sport ranges from Trek . I’ll then take you an in-depth write-up of the Marlin range, and the Marlin 4 in particular, so you can see what I think of this bike.

But, maybe you don’t have time for all that detail? Maybe you just want to know whether it’s a good bike, so you can either buy it or move on. Hey, I’m not going to be offended! Life is short and we’ve got bike rides to go on after all. So, here’s a quick spoiler. If you want a great entry-level mountain bike for light-duty trails, that’s also a great all-rounder and perfect for trips to the beach/grocery store or commuting to the office. AND you want all that at a stunningly-low price. Then the Marlin 4 is a great choice. If you want all that in a bike that’s a little lighter, a little more trail-ready, and you’ve got some extra coinage in your back pocket, then I’d suggest pushing the boat out slightly further and getting the Marlin 6.

Whichever Trek Marlin you choose, however, you’ll be riding around on it with a big grin on your face.

Now, spoiler over, if you’re able to stick around for a little longer we’ll go into a deep dive on the Marlin 4. Prepare to drool.

Trek Marlin overview

Trek’s Marlin range of bikes are known as mountain bikes, MTBs (for those looking for something that’s a little less of a mouthful) or “hardtails” (for those looking to appear a little more intelligent). For the rest of us, it’s useful to know that hardtails are bikes that have suspension on the front forks, dampening the trail vibration before it reaches your hands, wrists and arms. Full-suspension or ‘full-sus’ bikes are mountain bikes that have suspension on both the front and rear forks. Unless you’re an intermediate to advanced mountain biker then I’d recommend steering clear of full-suspension bikes. Top-of-the-range full-sus bikes are fantastic to ride but they come with a hefty price tag. Full suspension bikes that are more affordable tend to have rear suspension that is lower quality (therefore more prone to failure) and heavier (so you’ll have a harder time pedaling up hills).

Hardtails, like the Marlin range, are a great all-rounder. They’re sufficiently rugged to get around most beginner-to-intermediate bike trails with ease (and a grin on the rider’s face) and they’ll also take you to places where full-suspension MTBs would be completely out of place: the beach, the grocery store, the park at the weekend, and the office during the week. And that makes them a really versatile option for many people.

Trek’s Marlin range encompasses seven different models. These go from the entry-level Marlin 4 through consecutive numbers to the top-of-the-range Marlin 8. With these male/unisex bikes being complemented by the female-specific, Marlin 5 Women’s and Marlin 6 Women’s.

When I was researching the Marlin range online, I came across one comment which really summed it up: “Bang for the buck!!!!” Clearer the owner of this Trek bike was very enthusiastic about his purchase, though I did feel that the fourth exclamation mark was a little over-the-top. But, whatever, all the Marlin models are great bikes.

And, not only are they great bikes, by they’re also fantastic value-for-money. From the Marlin 4 at a touch over $500 to the Marlin 8, which is only around $1200. I say ‘only’ because, in the world of mountain bikes this is an absolute bargain.

So, the Marlin range is a series of hardtail mountain bikes, with great specifications, at a range of price points, that all represent excellent value. Let’s dive in and take a closer look at the Trek Marlin 4.

Trek Marlin 4 review

Pros: Lowest price in the Trek Marlin range; great ‘bang for your buck!!!!’ Cons: non-locking front suspension fork, narrower range of gears, heavier than other Marlins

Let’s start with looking at who this bike is for.

The Marlin 4 is a great all-rounder. It will take you on to plenty of backcountry trails, where you can have as much fun as you want on bike trails with loose stony or muddy surfaces. Returning home with a muddy grin on your face. Give it a clean down afterwards, pull on your work clothes, and it will take you to the office, with another grin plastered on your face (though, hopefully, less mud). In between, it will give you a lift to the beach, the grocery store, and around the local park to chase your kids.

If you’re new to cycling, then you’ll be hard pushed to find a better option than the Marlin 4, however you might not appreciate how versatile it is. Compare it to a road bike – the kind that you see spandex-clad speed merchants hunched over – or a full-suspension mountain bike and you’ll soon notice the differences. The Marlin 4 has a much more relaxed and upright riding position than a road bike does. Sure, you’re unlikely to go as fast as on a road bike, but you’ll ride in considerably more comfort. And you won’t be hitting the ‘Double Black Diamond’ bike trails on a Marlin 4, but then you might also have fewer trips to the Emergency Ward at your local hospital. Swings and roundabouts.

If you fit this description – you’re looking for an all-rounder bike and aren’t looking to achieve land speed records in your spandex or cycle down near vertical trails, then the Trek Marlin 4 is a great choice for you. If, however, you’re looking to spend more time on tougher and more rugged bike trails, then it’s worth heading a few notches up the range towards the Marlin 7 or Marlin 8.

Check out the specification list at the top of the page and you’ll see that the Marlin 4 has a great aluminum frame (which is light and strong) It has front suspension forks which reduce the amount of vibration from a bumpy trail surface from reaching your fingers and wrists. The Bontrager XR2 Comp tires give good grip and cornering on loose surfaces, and yet still feel smooth to ride when you’re on pavement. Top this off with 21 gears for getting you up hills easily and down hills quickly and you’ve got an excellent package.

The base model pricing of the Marlin 4 doesn’t come without a couple limitations though. First up, the Tektro disc brakes are mechanical rather than hydraulic. That means that they use a cable to pull the brake pads against the brake discs, rather than hydraulic brake fluid. These are still great brakes, giving you all the stopping power you need, however they add weight to the bike vs their hydraulic siblings. And bike weight is the second issue. Compared with the more expensive Marlin 8, the Marlin 4 is nearly three pounds heavier. Cycle for long distances or up lots of hills and you’ll definitely notice this extra weight. But, then, if you have the funds available and want extra spec, there are plenty of more advanced models in the Marlin range to choose from (Hint: I love the Marlin 6).

To sum up, if you’re looking for a great first bike for all-round use, taking you on regular trips to the trails, parks, beaches, and office, then the Marlin 4 is an awesome choice.

What is the difference between Trek Marlin 4 and 5?

One step up from the Trek Marlin 4 is the Marlin 5. With just over a hundred-dollar difference, is it worth stumping up the extra cash to trade-up?

Well, there are some general improvements to the components on the Marlin 5. With the key ones to note being the front forks, gearing, and brakes. Suspension on the front forks can now be locked. That means you choose when the forks are bouncy (to soak up rough terrain) or fixed (to make it easier to throw your weight behind uphill ascents). It’s a feature that I’m a big fan of.

Gearing has been changed so that, instead of 3×7 on the Marlin 4, there are now 2×8 on the Marlin 5. There are fewer gears, although in practice you won’t notice this. What you may notice is that there are likely to be fewer mechanical issues with 2-ring gearing than 3-ring in the long term – fewer issues meaning less downtime and less repair cost.

Finally, the brakes on the Marlin 5 use hydraulic brake fluid rather than the cable-pull mechanicals of the Marlin 4 brakes. These are lighter and are what you find on high-end mountain bikes.

Are these worth paying the extra for? Well, I ride a hardtail mountain bike that has a locking front suspension and it’s a feature that I really like as I use my bike on plenty of uphill smooth surfaces (as well as rougher trails). Doing those same uphills without locking suspension is harder but if your uphills are few are far between then this may not be an issue for you and therefore not worth paying for.

After looking at all of the core features and design specifications of the Trek Marlin 4, it’s time to give you our honest opinion. If you’re looking for an affordable trail bike that is powerful yet not too complicated to set up, the Marlin 4 is the perfect fit for you.

With entry-level Shimano parts and components that come as a standard feature on this bike, you can expect to get a lot of enhanced performance benefits even on simple rides.

It’s pretty affordable price doesn’t mean much in relation to the quality of this bike as it looks and feels like a premium selection. Its 21-speed gear shifter gives you the ability to easily transition to the optimal gear so that you can easily adapt to your environment.

In terms of its customization, the bike comes in seven different sizes; however, the larger bikes do not provide any specific benefits when compared to the smaller sizes. All in all, this is a great bike that is well worth the money you’ll spend on it, considering it’s primarily meant for beginners.

Trek Marlin 4 has a lot to offer in terms of looks, durability, build quality, and on-trail performance. It’s a versatile bike that’s ready to assume different roles and serve as a daily commuter or a mountain explorer.

Its long list of features includes lots of pleasant surprises , but some inevitable points for improvement as well.

Progressive Geometry Aluminum Frame

The most important element of Marlin 4 is definitely its frame. This Trek’s Alpha Aluminum frame is seen on more expensive bikes and features high-tech solutions such as internal cable routing, rack and fender mounts, a kickstand mount, progressive geometry, and more.

Namely, the top tube on smaller frames (XS, S) dips down to provide more standover height , which is great news for shorter riders. The frame itself is available in three vibrant colors, so it’s perfect for both men and women.

This Trek’s frame comes outfitted with an SR Suntour fork with 100 mm of travel. It’s a heavy fork, no doubt, but for $490 it’s a decent feature. You’ll be happy to have it when you hit the trails.

This fork does not have a lockout feature,  so you can’t lock it when you’re riding on paved roads to avoid power loss.

Shimano Tourney Components

Entry-level Shimano Tourney components will provide you with 21 gears on a 3×7 drivetrain . The cassette has a 14×28 tooth range, which is not ideal for steep hills. This is one area where Trek could improve in the future.

Tourney is Shimano’s cheapest groupset, so don’t expect much in terms of precision or durability. However, if your plan with Marlin 4 is to ride casually without testing anyone’s limits, you don’t need much more.

Highpoint: Trail-Ready Disc Brakes

Marlin 4’s Tektro mechanical disc brakes are good value for the money. They significantly extend the capabilities of this bike and present one of its main selling points.

These brakes are matched with 160 mm rotors on both wheels, so they are definitely trail-ready . Mechanical disc brakes don’t offer the precision of a hydraulic setup, but they are pretty much equal in terms of stopping power.

If you tackle big descents or hit the brakes hard at a traffic light, mechanical discs will respond well.

Double-Wall Rims and Wide Tires

Trek equips all of its bikes with Bontrager wheels and tires . Bontrager is Trek’s sister company, which means Marlin 4’s wheels and tires are built in-house.

Smaller frame sizes (XS, S) come with 27.5″ wheels , whereas all others roll on 29er wheels . This way, the bike will fit better for both short and tall riders.

The Bontrager XR2 Comp tires are 2.20″ on both wheel sizes. They’re quite knobby and have a wire bead which makes them more durable and less prone to flats.

Trek Marlin 4 Gen 2 is available in seven frame sizes , which is much more compared to other popular brands — most manufacturers offer bikes in four or five sizes.

It would win any beauty pageant.

If you’re completely new to mountain biking and trail riding and you want to see if this type of cycling is the right choice of hobby for you, Marlin 4 is an excellent choice.

This bike also doubles as a rugged commuter that you can ride to work, school, or around the campus. If you plan to take the long way home when you’re done with your obligations, then it’s an even better choice.

However, don’t purchase Marlin 4 if you’re the type of person to blame everything on the equipment and if your expectations are way too high. It’s an entry-level trail bike after all.

For a website that calls itself “bicycle guider” I expect to read insightful and current information on bicycles. Unfortunately, this article, although informative when written in 2020, is somewhat misleading in 2022. The Trek Marlin bike you describe is not a 2022 model and most of the specs listed no longer apply. There are actually too many differences to mention but suffice to say Trek has greatly updated the entire Marlin line – and the prices as well. I look forward to reading your amended article soon. I have one OEM Marlin 4, i would like to change the transmission to an Acera model. Do you think is advisable, maybe to increase to 9 or 10×3?

Hi Jose, Interesting question as I have never explored that before. I would suggest you contact your LBC to see if there is compatibility issues. Aceras are mid-level components for MTBs, and in terms of performance they do ok but no so much to worth the trouble. But, Shimano is always reliable.

Hi, is there a big difference between te 12-32 cassette on the Marlin 5 and the one on the Marlin 4? Would you recommend choosing the Marlin 5 because of the better cassette and the hydraulic disk breaks? Thanks a lot!

Hi Erik, I doubt it will have an impact to your riding if you are not racing etc…But yes, the Marlin 5 is an improvement from the previous one. Hydraulic disck breaks are more efficient.

Cycling is often seen as an elite sport thanks to the high price point for a great bike and quality biking gear. Fortunately, a lot of the big biking manufacturers (Trek included) have seen that and know how important it is to offer high-quality bikes that are a little more affordable for your average entry-level cyclist. 

The Marlin 4 is one of those bikes. A slightly less refined member of the Marlin line, it’s still a high-quality mountain bike from a trusted manufacturer, and it’s still more than trail ready. 

Let’s take a look at what this bike has to offer. 

The Marlin 4 isn’t the first bike most people think of when they think of the Marlin line. Cyclists tend to gravitate toward the Marlin 6 , which offers a slightly fresher and more feature-rich bike. 

But that isn’t a problem because the Marlin 4 doesn’t need to be in the spotlight to perform. 

Instead of adding many bells and whistles, the Marlin 4 focuses on good bike mechanics from good construction principles to a well-balanced components to create a bike that can keep up with premium models, but without the higher price tags. 

Things to Consider Before Buying a Mountain Bike

Mountain bikes are a great choice if you’re looking to be able to explore the woods and trails near your home on a bike. They’re fantastic for hills and rough terrain, but you don’t actually have to live in the mountains to take advantage of mountain bike design benefits. 

Mountain bikes are designed to handle off-roading and riding away from the asphalt. They offer a smoother ride and better jump capacity than road bikes, but they are a similarly specialized bike. If you’re looking for a road commuter or a bike for light riding you might be better off with another design. 

That’s not because mountain bikes aren’t great bikes, they are! But getting a bike that’s designed for the way you’re going to use it helps ensure that your money is buying the features and benefits that will most help you as a rider. 

Features & Benefits

Now that we’ve talked a little about the Marlin line and mountain bikes in general, let’s dig into the details about the Marlin 4 and what you can expect from this affordable mountain bike. 

The frame on the Marlin 4 is made of Trek’s Alpha Silver Aluminum alloy. That means superior performance and great balance, but the Silver alloy is just a little heavier than their more expensive Gold alloy (Not that the metals are alloyed with silver or gold either one, those are simply the names of the finished metal)

This frame doesn’t have a lot of extras. It’s pretty much the basic frame. However, like the other models in the Marlin line, this frame does have the mounting locations for a bike rack and other accessories. You do get a kickstand and internal routing standard with this design though, both of which help keep your bike in good condition. 

Internal routing is especially important if you’re planning to hit the trails with your Marlin 4. Keeping the wiring internal helps prevent premature damage and can especially help prevent wiring from getting cut or damaged while you’re out. 

This bike is just a little heavier than many serious cyclists prefer, slightly more than 31 lbs. That extra weight does mean that it takes more horsepower to get this bike rolling, but it’s a good middle-ground for most beginners and even intermediate mountain cyclists.

Suspension System

The suspension system on the Marlin 4 is, like most of the bikes in the Marlin line, a little slimmer than many mountain bikers prefer. The suspension is mostly in the front Suntour fork, which offers 100 millimeters of travel. 

Suntour is a good brand when it comes to suspension, so while this fork might not move as much as you prefer, it will still absorb more of the impact on your bike that you’re likely expecting. It’s also a good fork for handling road vibration, which makes gravel riding and even riding on damaged pavement significantly easier. 

That said, it can’t compete with a full suspension system, including a suspension saddle in terms of performance. The Suntour XCE 28 suspension fork will smooth things out, but you’ll still feel some of the bumps and bruises along the way. 

Still, if you like a more natural feeling ride, minimal suspension can actually help you connect with trail riding. It’s good for making your ride a little easier to handle while also helping you learn how different kinds of terrain will affect your bike.

The wheels on this bike are one area where we don’t have any real criticism. Considering the bike’s price point, it’s no surprise that it doesn’t come pre-loaded with a truly premium tire set, but the wheels are well designed and efficient. The 29″ wheel design is a little more aggressive than some of the alternatives, and double-walled rims add to the bike’s durability overall. 

The included tires give you a reasonably grippy tread but are also maneuverable and up to a little bit of cornering without too many problems. The big advantage here is that the tires are durable and up to quite a bit of active trail riding (and learning) before you’ll need to invest in replacements. 

This is where a lot of gear-loving cyclists don’t appreciate the design of the Marlin 4. However, if you’re in the camp that more gears aren’t necessarily better then this might be a design that appeals to you. 

The Marlin 4 has a fairly bare-bones drivetrain in terms of the number of gears it gives you. It’s only a 7-gear bike. 

However, that does give you a fair amount of flexibility as a trail rider. There are just enough gears to make climbing and dealing with different slopes more doable, but not so many that you’re likely to have trouble using your shifter effectively, even as a novice. 

More importantly, the Shimano drivetrain is a great option despite the limited gears thanks to its impressively smooth and consistent performance. Shimano not only offers consistent performance; their drivetrains are also easy to maintain and tend to last.

Next to the frame balance and weight, brakes are possibly your most important feature, and they might be more important than the frame quite frankly. Brakes are your number 1 safety feature, and it’s important to have great brakes in good working condition to make sure you always have firm control of your bike. 

The Marlin 4 comes with a set of Tektro mechanical disc brakes which are, overall, a great option in this price range. They aren’t quite as effective as the more advanced hydraulic disc brake design, but they are still more responsive than linear-pull brakes. 

Mechanical disc brakes are also less prone to getting gravel stuck and potentially damaging both the brake and the rim, which is definitely a big concern for most mountain cyclists. These brakes will need less maintenance and are much less likely to be the reason you’re walking beside your bike, than linear-pull models. 

It’s nice for an affordable bike to see this kind of adaptation included even on the more budget-friendly models in this line. 

Is the Trek Marlin 7 a Suitable Bike for Beginners?

The trek marlin 7 bike review is essential for beginners evaluating their options. With its versatile features and durable build, this bike is an excellent choice for those starting their cycling journey. Its lightweight frame, smooth gearing system, and reliable brakes ensure a comfortable and safe riding experience. The Trek Marlin 7 offers beginners the perfect balance of efficiency, control, and affordability.

Social Proof

Overall cyclists rocking the Marlin 4 tend to say the same thing. It’s a great bike at an affordable price point, but that doesn’t mean it’s a fantastic bike. If you’re looking for a good beginner or intermediate option, working with a tight budget, and don’t mind losing some of the bells and whistles of more expensive models, Marlin 4 is the right bike. 

If you’re expecting competition level performance and to be a pro rider three days after opening the bike you might be better off with a more expensive model that offers more features and versatility. 

Alternatives

Of course, the Marlin 4 has quite a bit of competition, specifically from other bikes in the Marlin line! We’ve also decided to compare the Marlin 4 to a similar bike from another manufacturer to see how it holds up and help you decide which model is the right choice for you. 

Trek Marlin 4 vs Marlin 5

The Marlin 4 and the Marlin 5 are remarkably similar beasts. Both models use the same basic frame, wheel components, and have similar forks. However, the Marlin 5 does offer an expanded drivetrain of 21 gears. 

The Marlin 5 also features upgraded hydraulic disc brakes, but they are similar enough that the two brake designs offer similar performance value. 

Overall, the Marlin 4 is probably the better option if you don’t mind having a more limited gear drivetrain. But the Marlin 5 is only slightly more expensive, so it’s worth the upgrade if you prefer bikes with more gear options. 

Trek Marlin 4 vs Marlin 6

Unlike the Marlin 5, there are a few more upgrades when you’re talking about the Marlin 6. Again, both bikes use the same frame and the same basic wheel design. 

However, in addition to using the upgraded gear system, the Marlin 6 also offers a slightly better suspension system that’s designed to help smooth out the trail a good bit more than the suspension on the Marlin 4. It’s still just a front suspension system, but a little extra travel in the fork goes a long way. 

That said, the Marlin 6 is the more expensive of the two by a fair amount. It’s worth the extra money, but the Marlin 4 is still a fine bike if you’re on a tighter budget. 

Trek Marlin 4 vs Giant ATX 2

The Trek Marlin 4 is again a very similar model to the Giant ATX 2. The ATX 2 also uses an internal routing system on the frame, and weighs about the same as the Marlin 4. Its balance point is similar, though it’s a slightly less aggressive bike thanks to the smaller wheel sizes. 

However, while less aggressive, those smaller wheels also mean more tire variety, making it a good option for cyclists who want selection or looking for something other than standard mountain bike tires for their new ride. 

The fork on the Giant ATX 2 also has slightly less travel room, making for a bumpier ride. 

Overall, we’d say that the Marlin 4 is a bike that will do just a little more than the Giant ATX 2, including that it will match your skill better longer. However, the Giant ATX 2 may be the better bike for beginners who don’t want an aggressive design on day one. 

The Trek Marlin 4 might not be a bike you want to take to a championship race or marathon, but it’s not supposed to be that kind of bike. It’s designed to be a good starter option and a functional mountain bike for riders on a budget. The design is simple, as are the features, but effective. 

Overall, this is a good option for a starter bike, an intermediate bike, or a bike for family members who aren’t all that sure of mountain biking yet.
