We live in an age of unprecedented access to digital technology – and with it, brand new ways of exploring the world around us.

While it's not quite the same as seeing, say, the Mona Lisa or Christ the Redeemer in person, some of the world’s most popular and remote destinations have created libraries of online images and video, as well as 360 degree virtual tours that let you virtually explore museums, galleries, world wonders and even national parks.

Here a just a few of the best digital tours that let you wander the world from wherever you may be social distancing.

A woma nin a pink technical fabric top and matching pants and a black cap with a brim walks past the orange buildings and clay roofs of the Choijin Lama Museum in Ulan Bator with a green camera sphere from Google Street View strapped to her back

See the seven wonders of the world

If there’s anything capable of whetting your appetite for world travel, it is the new seven wonders of the world:  the Great Wall of China , the ancient city of Petra , the Taj Mahal , the Colosseum , Machu Picchu , Christ the Redeemer , and Chichen Itza . Thankfully there are impressive virtual tours of each from The New York Times , AirPano , Google , and Panoramas .

With modern technology, you can even see the last standing wonder of the ancient world— The Pyramids of Giza . There are a few other wonders that might not make it into to the top seven but are still worth a digital peek, like the Alhambra , Seville's La Giralda , and even Easter Island.

The Egyptian Antiquities room in the Lovure Museum is empty except for several statues of various sizes from Tanis, Karnak, and Thebes

Best virtual museum tours

In recent years, Google has partnered with over 2,5000 art museums to upload high-resolution versions of millions of pieces of art. Highlights include New York’s MoMA , DC’s National Gallery of Art , Chicago’s Art Institute , the Casa Battl ó, and Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum to name a few.

In addition, The Louvre offers a virtual tour , as do The Vatican Museums , many of the Smithsonian Museums , the Russian Museum , the top-rated British Museum , the Minneapolis  Museum of Russian Art , and the Palace Museum in Beijing.

You may not be able to kiss the Blarney Stone right now, but you can tour the Blarney Castle from afar. You can also visit the Museum of Flight,  the Museum of Science, the Museum of Natural History,  the National Women's History Museum  and Boston's History of Science Museum .

While museums are often an inherently visual experience, there's a lot to be learned from archives of past lectures and tours like the ones preserved online by Nashville's Frist Museum , the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the Smithsonian American Art Museum,  the Frick , and others.

Explore national parks

While travel to National Parks is best avoided for the time being, you don't need to miss out on the scenery. Virtual Yosemite is absolutely stunning and one of the best, replete with audio. Both Yellowstone National Park and Mount Rushmore offer virtual tours as well.

Google has similar 360 degree audio-visual tours of five select national parks, including Kenai Fjords, Hawai'i Volcanos , Carlsbad Caverns, Bryce Canyon , and Dry Tortugas, as well as 31 more on Google Earth . You can also get an up-close look at almost 4,000 pieces of artwork, artifacts, and other treasures related to the history and culture of the national parks, and view online exhibits .

Digital safaris

Wildlife is a big draw for travelers, whether it's sighting some of the Big Five in Africa, glimpsing whales in North America, or introducing your children to new animals in person on a family safari . But if you're forays into the bush are grounded for now, many zoos and aquariums have created digital access to their habitats.

You can easily watch several live webcams of some of the nation’s greatest zoos and aquariums, including the  San Diego Zoo , Houston Zoo , Zoo Atlanta , the Tennessee Aquarium , and the Georgia Aquarium . Additionally you can see Canadian farm animals doing their thing , or you could watch Stella the Dog jump endlessly into huge piles of Maine leaves.

Virtual hiking

Thanks to panoramic video, you can get a really good idea of what a hike looks like well before you arrive at the trailhead. For example, you can experience all of the following top-rated hikes right now from your computer or tablet:  Bryce Canyon , Grand Canyon , GR20 , Inca Trail , and the death-defying Angel's Landing . For even more great hikes, simply YouTube one of Lonely Planet’s top 10 treks or any other hike that suits your fancy. Bonus points if you follow along during a workout to enhance the realism.

Famous landmarks

You can visit many wonders of nature, including the Amazon Rainforest , Iguazu Falls , the Komodo Islands , or Table Mountain , using virtual tours. Or you can explore the Statue of Liberty , the Sahara Desert , Niagara Falls , or even a guided tour of the Eiffel Tower . For even more virtual tours, search your bucket list of adventures with  AirPano , Google Earth , or YouTube .

Travel to outer space

The moon hasn't made it to Lonely Planet's Best In Travel list (yet!), and even without self-isolation and shelter-in-place measures for COVID-19, many of us may never travel to space. But thanks to technology, now is as good of a time as any to do so virtually. Before blasting off, considering touring some of NASA’s offices first. Then relive the last lunar missions and moon walks in stunning HD. Or take a virtual tour of Mars with the help of Google.

The Best Digital Tools for Travel Journaling

When it comes to logging your travel memories, the modern era poses a unique set of problems. You don’t want to upload a hundred vacation photos to Facebook (newsflash: no one’s looking), and you know you won't get around to printing all those snapshots—but one or two Instagram posts just aren't enough to do your trip justice. Enter the digital travel journal: an elevated way to share photos, jot down memories, geo-tag restaurants, and track your itinerary in real time.

Kristen Dold is a Chicago-based freelance writer and content strategist who focuses on health, travel, and lifestyle topics. Her work has appeared in Women’s Health, Travel + Leisure, Runner’s World, Marie Claire, GQ, Vogue, and New York magazine.

Best For: Building stunning photo-centric narratives

Exposure’s clean, minimalist aesthetic has made it a fast favorite among the professional photog set, but it’s easy enough to use for amateurs. The concept is simple: drag and drop your snapshots into grids, add some brief titles and descriptors, then let your followers bask in full-bleed photos that have the highbrow feel of a digital magazine. (Take a look at some of their featured stories to see what we mean.)

Price: Free for the first three stories, $5+ a month after that

Best for: sharing real-time updates with close friends.

No more overposting anxiety— Tripcast is like a private Instagram feed for the folks who really do care about your every move. (Hi, Mom.) Friends at home and fellow explorers can get notifications on your whereabouts and comment on trip photos that automatically upload to a travel map. Another perk: travel pals can build albums together so everyone’s memories are in one spot.

Price: Free

Best for: keeping a quick chronicle while on the move.

The newly revamped version of the Day One app (called ‘Day One 2’) makes journaling as easy as posting to Twitter. Jot down some highlights, attach a photo, and the app will stamp your location, the date, time, weather, and even your step count, if you want it. Plus you can tag posts, so it's easy to keep past excursions organized for future reference. (If you like microjournaling, the app can keep separate journals for things like work, health or sleep.) Features like audio recording and tagging your friends are coming soon.

Cost: $4.99

Best for: getting wordy without wifi.

Words and images get equal real estate on Bonjournal , a Tumblr-like platform ( here’s what it looks like) which allows you to add tags like ‘food & drink’ or ‘nightlife’ to entries, share them on social media (a privacy lock is available for any posts you want to keep to yourself) and even give your experiences a grade. The best feature: you can create posts offline and upload them later, ideal for long flights home without wifi.

Dotted lines on the page will keep your entries neat and organized and an included ribbon bookmark will keep track of where you left off last. Even though this journal is pretty basic in design and on the smaller side, we think it's a great option for someone who doesn't want to spend too much on their first travel journal.

Bound in crossgrain lambskin and available in a light blue or scarlet red, you'll have 128 pages of lined Featherweight paper to fill. This notebook is all about quality and is designed to last, but with that comes a higher price tag. It would be a great gift for the writer in your life who loves to travel, but given its simple layout and lack of templates other travel journals can have, it may not be splurge-worthy for every traveler.

DesignWorks Ink Suede Travel Journal

How US trip brought peace to Kenyan Parliament - Francis Ole Kaparo recounts

Joseph Muia

Former National Assembly Speaker Francis Ole Kaparo speaks on Citizen TV's JKLive show on April 24, 2024.

Former National Assembly Speaker Francis Ole Kaparo has disclosed how a foreign trip organized for a few Members of Parliament from both sides of the divide in 1993 brought about the presently existing unity and interaction during a dark time of division and intense hostility.

Speaking on Citizen TV’s JKLive Show on Wednesday night, Ole Kaparo ran down memory lane to a time shortly after he took over as Speaker of the House, when a major rift existed between MPs allied to the government and their counterparts in the opposition.

Ole Kaparo revealed the extent of the beef saying there was practically no interaction between MPs from one side of the divide with their colleagues on the other wing, adding that it was so tense that not even greetings could be exchanged.

He noted that the rivalry had spilled over to the public and one would be assaulted and even lynched for just being spotted in a vehicle branded with Government of Kenya (GK) plates out on the streets.

“I remember those years it was dangerous to ride on a GK vehicle in Nairobi because there were chances you would be lynched and it would burn to ashes. A lot of people were killed, imprisoned, maimed and there was indeed hostility out there in the country in the process of getting into multi-party democracy,” said Ole Kaparo.

“When the House resumed on January 26, 1993, the members of the government side and those of the opposition side would not say hello to one another, let alone sit together, and that situation continued for almost 9 months. When you are in the middle, you are not armed, it was difficult.”

As a solution to the cold shoulders in Parliament, the former Chairperson of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) formulated a plan to restore unity in the House by sending MPs from both sides for a joint benchmarking trip to the United States Congress.

“I had to get the guys to talk to one another; it was bad. I had to break that hostility and I sent the MPs to the US Congress. I got support from the US Parliament and government to send 15 MPs to the US; I sent 8 from the government and 7 from the opposition to reflect the numbers in the House,” he said.

During the trip, Kaparo explained, he had organized with the US government to put together all the legislators under one roof upon their arrival, despite the MPs not uttering a word to each other the entire journey.

He noted that their hard-headedness lasted for about three days after their arrival, but they soon became bored and started engaging with each other.

“When I sent those fellows from Nairobi to London, to Washington they were not talking to one another. Those in KANU spoke to those in KANU and those in opposition to one another and not those in government,” Kaparo stated.

“I had arranged with the US Congress and government that those guys should not be put in a hotel; they should get a house of their own where they were the only ones there; the only non-Kenyans would be the fellows working for them; those who would clean, make food for them…but they were all there together to the exclusion of others.”

He added: “For three other days, they were not talking to each other but on the fourth and fifth day, they missed talking to somebody else and began talking to one another.”

The ex-Speaker went on to point out that the MPs were forced to spend another 10 days under the same roof in the US until the one-time foes became allies.

On coming back home, he said, the lawmakers brought with them their newfound bromance and soon thereafter replicated it on the whole House and sanity was finally restored.

“We kept them for another 10 days…after that, they talked all the way from Washington to Nairobi and into the proceedings of Parliament and infected the House with the disease of talking to one another. Gradually we became a working Parliament,” added Kaparo, who is Kenya’s longest serving Speaker.

#TripTechSolutions | How Our Tech Protects User Data

After two years of intermittent lockdowns caused by the pandemic, we have all seen how technology can empower us to continually connect with friends, communities, and the wider world. Technology has also enabled Trip.com Group to ensure we meet the needs of our users and business partners over the last two years.

In this article series #TripTechSolutions , we look at how our technology has helped us overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic.

I’m sure you’ve had a similar experience - you’re at home, enjoying a relaxing start to the day checking the company emails on your smart device. In the afternoon, you take your laptop to your favourite coffee shop and prepare for a client meeting. While you wait, you access your company’s remote network, and maybe you come across some potentially sensitive or protected information.

Mobile-working scenarios, like this, have become the new normal for many modern-day businesses around the world. Yet, taking corporate and customer information outside the office intranet can be a risk to users and businesses.

In order to meet the challenges of a modern day workforce and protect users' personal information, Trip.com Group has recently introduced the internationally recognized "Zero Trust" technology to protect users' information.

The technology minimizes the trust given to any one person, device, or system inside or outside the network, repeatedly and strictly verifying all permissions. This not only ensures that mobile and home office employees can work remotely without affecting the business, but also ensures the platforms and users' data remain in a trusted, safe environment.

The introduction of the Zero Trust technology is only a small aspect of the many investments we have made in maintaining information security. With expanding digitalization and the importance of privacy, safeguarding user information security is a top priority for us.

Setting-up the “Shield”: Encrypting user data across all platforms

Starting from the moment a new user registers an account, private data circulation and storage begins across a variety of digital platforms. When it comes to information security and privacy protection, naturally users have questions and concerns - how is my personal information being stored? Who can view my personal information? Could my personal information be leaked?

On Trip.com Group’s sub-brand platforms, such as Trip.com, Ctrip, and Qunar, when a new user inputs their email and phone number to register an account, their data is immediately encrypted. As users purchase products, share ID card numbers, payment and credits card details, and other information, we ensure their data is safe and secure through encryption, in order to avoid any potential data breaches at the source.

Trip.com Group has ensured the protection and encryption of users’ personal information long before it was mandatory under legislation and an industry requirement.

Ling Yun, Head of Trip.com Group’s Information Security department, said, "A single instance of personal information such as email addresses, ID card numbers, and credit card numbers leaking, can cause severe damage to user confidence. We realized this and encrypt not only user passwords but all types of private information." Internally, the Information Security team call this project "Shield". Ling said the project was named this after the popular Marvel TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. . The team hoped to create an indestructible “shield” to protect the personal information of all users across all platforms and brands.

The process of forging the Shield security system was not easy. Trip.com Group was established 22 years ago, and it was a complex task to encrypt historical information across all platforms, as well as encrypt all the new information generated on the apps and sites. The Information Security team worked closely with all of the Group’s business units and IT departments to reform and upgrade the entire backend algorithm. This process took over a year to achieve.

Once the encryption was completed, the decryption channel required strict governance too. The Information Security department invested a lot of effort to narrow down the decryption channel and strictly monitor the decryption process, leaving only a few necessary interfaces for business exchanges and to serve users.

In what scenarios does data need to be decrypted? For example, an airline needs to verify an ID number before a traveller boards a plane. Or a purchase confirmation SMS message needs to be sent to a user. In each scenario, the platform will start a strict risk assessment protocol, and only with sufficient reason will the information be transmitted to a third party. As for any requests with insufficient reason, Trip.com Group’s platforms will refuse to provide any personal information to the third party.

Some users may ask, “With so much personal information, is my information analyzed and used for business needs?” Well, the Shield system protects against this too. The only analysis that takes place is based on non-personal, annonymised data, meaning that this data cannot be tracked back to any one individual, with only trends to be seen from among a group of anonymous users.

Protecting personal information from the inside out

Trip.com Group has also developed a strict internal information security system to manage and regulate data access by:

Building access management platforms with limited authorization and tracking all authorized behavior and activity;

To prevent information from being captured whilst accessed, pages containing sensitive data have both visible watermarks of the viewer ID and also invisible watermarks; the backend system stores complete records of the viewer’s operations and screenshots, and other behavior that could be a potential data breach risk is logged and recorded;

Increasing awareness of information security through regular internal training, quizzes, and activities like “Information Security Week.”

Building a high-standard system within a healthy ecosystem

Going back as early as 2016, Trip.com Group has invested in the people, processes and technology to protect organizational data and obtained the international standard ISO 27001 certification . Trip.com Group has also received the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) certification, a standard for businesses that handle branded credit cards from all major card holders.

Instead of building the information security system behind closed doors, Trip.com Group has developed free tools for the whole industry. For example, cooperate information breach regularly occurs on Github, a popular coding sharing platform, and the information security team of Trip.com Group has developed a scan tool to cope with this challenge. They have also turned this tool into a free SaaS service, helping other companies to mitigate the risk. Today, many well-known internet companies make use of this platform.

"Maintaining information security needs to be collaborative and efforts need to be maintained by the whole industry. We are always willing to share some of our technology with the outside world, to support the security ecosystem and further protect our users," said Yun Ling.

Digital information security is an important pillar of Trip.com Group’s offering. Data security technology and information systems make sure our users’ privacy is always fully protected and that we are maintaining standards exceeding legal requirements. Looking to the future, information security technology will remain a focus of the Group; and we will continue to invest in new technologies to meet the requirements of our users and our industry.

A Little Journal… These Digital Travel Diary Apps Are Worth Your Time

Last updated on January 4, 2024 by Shannon

As travel enthusiasts, we yearn to capture the essence of extraordinary travel moments and freeze them in time. We even want those mundane details preserved—what was the name of that hilarious taxi driver who shuttled you from the airport to your guesthouse?

If you’ve logged those details in a travel journal, you don’t have to remember—that’s where travel journaling apps come in, offering a digital travel scrapbook that easily documents even the craziest travel adventures.

trip tv digital

I’ve been traveling the world for 15 years, writing, photographing, and sharing my travel stories from the first day. That means I have pretty high expectations when it comes to using digital travel diaries meant to preserve the memories of your expeditions. Here’s what you need to know about the best online travel journal apps available.

Table of Contents

What are Digital Travel Diaries?

reflecting on Loch Ness about what to write in my travel journal app

While journaling about your travels via a paper notebook used to be called a travel log, the more modern equivalent is an online travel journaling app. That said, even diary app is just a new way to log the most important moments of your travels—and the mundane ones too.

Travel journals essential just document your experiences, capturing your memories as you travel the world. By logging your travel memories in real time via a journaling app, you ensure the smaller details are captured.

Was it a torrential downpour on the day you had booked an “any-weather” tour of the Norwegian fjords? Log that and then share how you felt at that very moment, otherwise the details fade with time.

That’s the real magic of keeping a travel log in any form, a beloved notebook, an app, or a blog. I’ve used all three over my 15+ years of travel. This travel blog was my primary travel log, but at times I’ve used these travel apps to capture moments more immediately.

thoughtful travel journal diary apps

And no matter my online travel journal app of choice, I always, always have a small physical journal. Even if you diligently record all of the best moments of your trip in your digital travel diary app, you should also carry a small travel journal that acts as your travel log—you use it to jot down funny off-the-cuff moments, or even just mundane details.

Perhaps you press between the pages ticket stubs, a pretty flower from your world wanders, and other small memorabilia that can’t be captured in a journaling app. It becomes a place to log currency conversions you can surreptitiously glance at when haggling at a market, or jot down lists and travel plans.

I never travel without a pocket Field Notes waterproof notebook and this Moleskine travel journal —its these two things that have allowed me to share such rich details on this blog, my personal travel log that’s been running 15 years and counting.

How to Choose an Online Travel Journal App

trip tv digital

Travel journal apps are not one-size-fits-all. The best apps offer the exact range of features you need and at a price point you can afford—which can mean free! Many journaling apps offer a free version that may just meet your needs. Often its the more sophisticated features that require a paid upgrade.

Given that you’re probably snowed under travel planning, don’t waste your time downloading every travel diary app here. To pick the right app for your travels, consider these things before you download it:

When choosing an online travel diary app, there are several factors to consider that can help you find the one that best fits your needs. Here are some tips to help you make a decision:

  • Features : Review what the journaling app actually does—what are the key features these app developers believe are the hallmarks of their app? That will tell you a lot about functionality. Standard features of most digital travel diaries include: text entry, photo and video uploading, geotagging, and weather data. Decide which features are important to you and ensure that the app provides them. Maybe you want an awesome map interface because you’re hopscotching around the world for a year ? Or you’re studying abroad you might want an app with more functionality around text and photo entries.
  • Platform Compatibility : Check if the digital journaling app is available on your preferred platforms, such as iOS, Android, web-based, and desktop. If you’re bringing both a smartphone and laptop on your travels , you may wan a travel diary app that seamlessly switches between the two devices.
  • Syncing and Backup : Consider whether the app offers syncing and backup options—and if those are free or paid features. You want access your travel diary across multiple devices, and you want it securely backed up to the cloud.
  • Export and Sharing Options : If you plan to share your travel diary with others or would like to have a backup of your entries outside of the app, check if it offers export options, such as PDF or other file formats.
  • Company Story : If the travel journaling app you’re considering using hasn’t been around for at least two-to-five years, run in the other direction. Companies, especially app makers, fold quickly. The last thing you want is an email saying you have a matter of days to download your cherished memories before they’re all deleted.

Best Travel Journaling Apps

Day One is the best travel journal app

Day One tops most of these lists because it’s actually that good—and it’s been around since 2011, so you know your travel memories are safe with this online diary app. The company has invested in a high-quality product, and updates over the years have responded to user reviews and feedback—which is enthusiastic across the board.

Its clean interface and seamless integration with iOS (both iPhones and Macs) and Android make it a joy to use. You can effortlessly capture each destination through text and photos, while popping in location data too.

Best app features : The “On This Day” functionality is neat because it doesn’t pull in the best of anything, but rather that exact moment years ago when you were on an incredible adventure out there in the world—or maybe you had logged a tasty hot chocolate at a hipster spot near that landmark you were visiting.

Either way, you’ll be transported back there in an instant and that app feature is maybe one of the strongest motivators to journal about all the big (and small) things that happen as you travel.

Cost : The free version is enough to see if you like it, but if you’re using this as your main digital travel journal then the one photo per entry restriction on free plans isn’t going to cut it. Premium is affordable though, at just under $3 per month, which buys you unlimited photos, videos, audio, drawings, and more.

Journey online journaling app

If you go all in on Journey as your travel journal app, it will become your trusted companion. Rather than being a journaling app that’s great for travel, this travel-centric journaling app goes above and beyond with its extensive features.

Geotagging allows you to pinpoint the exact location of you experiences, while the inclusion of weather data and “mood” status adds depth to entries. You can import photos from your camera roll directly into journal entires, creating vivid visual narratives of your travels.

This robust app works on iOS devices and Android phones, Mac or Windows computers, and there’s even a web app! Basically, it’s an accessible and essential tool for any travel writer seeking to document their adventures with style and precision. Not only because of the features, but also because it allows multi-media exports in PDF or doc format.

It’s also a bit cheeky and has a handy guide to what Journey offers versus Day One or Daylio .

Best app features : Stand out for many will be the features that let you automatically sync and import social media content from Instagram and the like—what a time saver! And the full text editing screen is nice—you can bold, bullet, color, or link to anything you’d like right inside the text. Surprisingly, that’s not in every diary journaling app.

But one of the neater travel-focused elements are the three views for your journal—media (where you scroll by photos), map (which shows your entries pinpointed on a map of the world) and calendar (journals organized by date).

Cost : Unlike essentially all competitors, Journey offers a one time purchase license—currently $18. You can buy a membership for ~$4.20.

Daylio is a super slick online journal app

Daylio , billed as a “simple micro-diary app,” adds an interesting twist to a travel journaling routine. As a mood and activity tracker, it enables you to record daily experiences and emotions with ease—and without writing anything. It’s an interesting way to to reflect on how your travel adventures have impacted your overall well-being .

It’s not for the hardcore travel writer, but rather, Daylio captures the essence of the travel experiences in a uniquely personal way. It’s a good companion for those seeking to intertwine their emotional journey with their physical travels. And for those who want a more streamlined diary app with fewer features and just straight to the meat of what you want to do.

Best app features : This app is dead simple to use and can be updated in under a minute thanks to the tap interface. It’s certainly not going to be the only way you record you travels, but if you’re already planning to share extensively on a Facebook or Instagram page , then this ease of use may just ensure that you use it every day.

Cost : You could get pretty far with the free version, or upgrade for just $3 per month—only the premium version supports exporting to PDF.

4. Evernote

Evernote for travel journaling

Real talk: The digital travel journal of your dreams may be something you’re already using. When it comes to versatile note-taking, Evernote reigns supreme. Its functionality goes beyond simple journaling, allowing the creation of multimedia-rich entries.

I’ve organized my entire life via Evernote—travel pans, stories, etc—and its robust features make a compelling case for this being one of the best journaling apps out there, period. Not just in travel, but in general.

As one of the best digital diary apps, you can update it seamlessly across iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows.

Best app features : Well, you could use Evernote to basically plan and execute your trip, in addition to using it as a digital journal. You can also stay ruthlessly organized.

Cost : The free version offers 60 MB monthly uploads, which is constraining for travelers looking for an online app where they could add photos and videos to Evernote itself—this would like be better if you’re embedding YouTube videos, for example, versus storing them in Evernote.

The Personal version offers a more reasonable 10 GB in monthly uploads, but costs $11/month for that perk. If you’re already paying for Evernote for other reasons then this could be an excellent online travel journal, otherwise some of the other ones are likely better priced for a traveler.

5. Travel Diaries

Travel Diaries app is not free but is very cheap

For those seeking a dedicated travel journaling app, Travel Diaries hits the mark. It’s really a truly solid option. As a travel writer, I’m captivated by its interactive features. You can easily create immersive travelogues, complete with photos, maps, and annotations.

It’s also a captivating way to showcase your journey to fellow travelers (and your family and friends back home, of course!). The ability to share your travel stories and explore others’ adventures on the platform adds a sense of community not available in the other digital travel journaling apps.

It’s available as software for web, iOS and Android, but will only work with an internet connection (either cell data or wifi)—which means this might not be the best journaling app for those going far off-the-beaten path .

Best app features : A broad range of fonts and styles allow you to design your travel diary according to your own taste, and your travel log can include itineraries, travel photos, and a traveling map. The layout as an actual travel journal is a fun and personal touch that makes it feel like your digital diary is just as capable of creativity as a blank page in front of you.

Cost : There is no free version of Travel Diaries—it’ll be a subscription for as long as you want access to your travel journal. The basic plan costs $1 a month and includes unlimited storage and is really all most travelers will need for a robust travel journal. If you want to export your stories to PDF, you’ll have to upgrade to $3 per month.

Diaro general journaling app that would work for travelers

Diaro App is a reliable companion for millions of people, not just globetrotters. This comprehensive diary app offers an array of features that elevate a travel journaling experience. Sometimes the best travel journal is, well, just a great online diary that you happen to use to document your travels.

The ability to add text, photos, tags, and organize entries into folders keeps this app well-organized—you can effortlessly find specific memories or delve into specific themes from your trips. It has a map of entry locations, which is especially important for those using this as a travel journal diary.

Diaro’s sleek interface and user-friendly design make the process of documenting adventures a true pleasure. Available on web, iOS or Android devices (with cross-device syncing via Dropbox) Diaro is a go-to app for travelers who want to capture the essence of their trip with elegance and efficiency.

Best app features : The multilingual UI (30+languages) may be a real boon for those for whom English is not their native language, but the shining standout features is just how easy it is to create a robust diary accounting for all of the key moments on your trip.

Cost : The free version has robust functionality. Upgrading to Diario Pro costs $10 per month and offers more customizability.

7. Polarsteps

Polarsteps online journal app

Polarsteps is a great travel journal app that offers automatic tracking of your journey, making it effortless to document and share your trips. With its GPS technology, the app traces your route in real-time, creating a visually appealing map of your adventure without requiring any manual input.

This feature sets Polarsteps apart from other travel journal apps, as it eliminates the need for constant updates and allows you to focus on enjoying your trip while the app takes care of recording your route—and uses minimal data and power to do so.

What truly makes Polarsteps unique is its ability to create a beautifully presented travel log that showcases your journey. This app is made for the travel photographers out there also wanting a digital travel log of their journey.

Along with the automatic tracking, the app allows you to add photos, captions, and personal insights to your entries. These elements are then combined to create a visually stunning travel journal that can be shared with friends, family, and fellow travelers. I think this is one of the prettier apps—the maps alone are just a step up from the others.

Best app features : The GPS tracking is easily the standout here. You’ll know the precise spot you took a photo, and can then include a quick note—an inside joke you shared with a friend while there, a tidbit about the day, and more. This kind of precise location data is invaluable in the months and years after you travel.

Cost : It’s free! Polarsteps offers you a printed travel journal of your trip, which is how it’s monetized.

8. Waffle Journal

Waffle Journal travel diary screenshot for iphone

Waffle Journal stands out from the rest as a a collaborative journaling app that allows you to document and share your travel experiences with others—probably those on your same trip. Its unique approach fosters collaboration, allowing friends, family, or fellow travelers to contribute to your journal. With the ability to add stories, photos, and memories, everyone can create a collective travel diary that captures the essence of your adventures.

The app goes beyond traditional journaling by integrating multimedia elements. You can include photos, videos, and audio recordings. It’s not a travel journal specifically, so you’re not going to have any of those map features the travel apps have integrated into the experience, but it could be a great option for those travel in a group, or a group of friends who just love to share their travel adventures with each other. Social sharing features make it easy to showcase your travel adventures on social media platforms or via email.

BONUS: RIP: Bonjournal

Bonjournal captured my attention many years ago for its visually stunning approach to travel journaling. As you penned your travel stories, this app transformed them into beautifully presented narratives—and it made you choose just one photo to represent your day. Which was really quite neat.

This travel journal app is no longer available! Even though other websites are still recommending it as a travel diary app, the gorgeous app that debuted more than a decade ago is no longer up and running. Instead, a new app with the same name launched in 2021—it’s not a viable alternative. This new Bon Journal diary app is glitchy and poorly rated—storing your cherished travel memories there is not a good idea.

Don’t forget a paper journal as well.

This Moleskin travel journal is well made and worth the space it will take up in your bag. There will be times you just want to put pen to paper—you’ll be glad you have an analog record of your travels too.

How to Safely Store Travel Photos and Videos

trip tv digital

These travel journaling apps are a terrific way to document your journey for personal memories, and to share with others. Although some long-term travelers create a travel blog to record their trips, using a travel diary instead is a great alternative.

You get amazing functionality and the ability to share your travel stories without the hassle of running a blog—which can get pricey and generally lacks the ability to share some stories privately with family, or keep other journal entries entirely private.

One thing all of these apps have are general constraints on how you upload, store, and present your travel photos and videos. Although some of these apps offer paid subscriptions with unlimited uploads, you’re likely safer if you store your actual travel photos elsewhere, too. Here’s a quick review of other places you can store travel photos, and the perks of using them in addition to, or instead of, a travel diary app.

  • Facebook pages : Rather than use your personal profile, consider setting up a Facebook page for your trip—then you can share unlimited stories, photos, and videos. And you’re creating and sharing in a place where it’s likely your family and friends are already hanging out.
  • Instagram : This is a great way to share photos, but videos and stories are a little more constrained on this platform. This might be a good option in addition to a digital travel diary.
  • SmugMug : If you need a place to both store and display all of your travel photos, SmugMug is a great option. I’ve had an annual plan for more than a decade and it offers unlimited storage for all of my photos from all over the world for $88 per year. And it’s totally customizable—you can create gorgeous albums on a custom domain name if you own one.
  • Google Drive : If you just need a backup solution without the need to share then Google Drive is a good option (I find Google Photos a chore to use). It’s just $2 a month for 100GB of cloud storage.

Ready for some travel inspiration? These are the best travel stories of travelers to follow now, inspiring books from historic travels, and short reads, too.

Best Portable TV Overall: LG StanbyME Go

Often called the "suitcase TV," the LG StanbyME Go is a rare portable television from a reputed brand. It’s essentially a 27-inch touchscreen full-HD TV that lives in a briefcase. When you need it, just open the case, adjust the TV angle/ orientation as you like, and start watching. Once you are done, you sit the screen down in its space, close the case lid, and it’s ready for storage or travel.

It’s a bit expensive, but you won’t find a more refined or feature-rich portable TV on the market. If you want to invest in a portable television and are a frequent user, it’s hard to go wrong with the LG StanbyME Go.

In terms of features, you get Dolby Vision and HDR10 to enjoy high-dynamic range content from various sources. There is also a 20W four-channel speaker system with Dolby Atmos support. So you’ll get a pretty decent surround sound experience.

Like other LG TVs, the StanbyME Go relies on webOS for the software, giving you access to many apps, including all popular streaming services. There is also Apple AirPlay 2 support. Other highlights include a built-in battery that can power the TV for up to three hours and an HDMI input to connect your streaming devices, gaming console, and more.

There is much to like about the StanbyME Go, but it’s not without its quirks. The permanently attached briefcase is likely to become a distraction or come in the way. Also, it uses an LCD panel, so you won’t get the same picture quality as LG’s excellent OLED TVs.

trip tv digital

LG StanbyME Go is a unique portable TV that comes in a suitcase. It offers a large screen, Dolby Vision support, and can work in different orientations.

Best Budget Portable TV: Tyler TTV706 Portable TV

Featuring a 10-inch Full HD LCD screen, the Tyler TTV706 is a good portable TV that costs under $100. Despite its affordable pricing, the TV offers multiple input options, including HDMI, to connect external devices for watching streaming media, playing games, and more. You can even plug in a USB drive or pop in an SD card slot to watch offline content.

Tyler claims the built-in battery can last up to four hours, and you can use the wall charger or a car adapter to juice it up. In other highlights, the company supplies everything you need to get the most out of your portable TV. You get a stand to prop it up, antennae to catch broadcast TV or FM radio, and a remote to control it.

Streaming devices, like the Amazon Fire TV Stick, Roku, or Chromecast, work without issues. However, the built-in speaker isn’t very loud. You’ll be better served by connecting a portable speaker. Moreover, as it doesn’t cost much, the included LCD panel isn’t very high-quality, and the resulting picture quality is average.

The Tyler TTV706 is an affordable portable TV with a Full HD screen, HDMI input, and a built-in TV tuner. Its battery can last up to four hours on a single charge.

Best Portable TV for the Car: Seventour Portable Car TV

If you are looking to keep the kids or other occupants in your car entertained on a long road trip or just need something to watch on a break, the Seventour Portable Car TV is a good option. It comes with a universal mount that can fit any car seat with a round headrest pole and keep the TV in place during your ride, including when encountering a pothole or speed breaker.

The TV features a 12.4-inch Full HD IPS LCD panel and not a 4K panel as per some of its marketing on Amazon. It runs Android 10, which is, unfortunately, not the Android TV version. But you still get a wide selection of apps via the Google Play Store, including many popular streaming services.

Among other features, you get two HDMI ports, one for input and the other for output, allowing you to connect streaming devices and gaming consoles or mirror the TV to another display.

But unlike our other recommendations, it doesn’t have a built-in battery. So it’ll need to be plugged into your car's 12-volt outlet or cigarette lighter port. Moreover, there is no TV tuner, so you rely on apps to get your content. Of course, except for downloaded content, you’ll need access to a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot for internet connectivity.

The Seventour Portable Car TV is perfect for your car with its universal car mount, access to Android apps, and HDMI input. Unfortunately, it lacks a battery.

Best Portable Gaming TV: Desobry Portable Smart TV

Looking to game on the go? Desobry Portable Smart TV can help. It has everything you need to play games wherever you want. You get a 14-inch Full HD display, dual speakers, and an HDMI input. So you’ll be able to connect any game console or PC that can output video via HDMI.

There is also a 4,000mAh battery to power the display when you don't have wall power. Plus, you’ll be happy to know the company bundles wall and car chargers for the TV.

Other features include a built-in TV tuner to enjoy free broadcasts. You can also use the HDMI port to plug in your favorite streamer. Plus, a USB port and RCA connectors are available to give you even more options. Unfortunately, the TV only supports up to 32GB USB drives formatted in the FAT32 file system.

There is a built-in TV stand to prop it up for a convenient viewing angle, and the company supplies a car mounting kit for your vehicle. Finally, while the TV picture quality is quite decent for its price tag, it suffers from poor viewing angles.

Desobry Portable Smart TV will help you or your family game on the road, while camping, or in your backyard. It houses a Full HD screen, HDMI port, and dual speakers.

Best Portable Smart TV: LG StanbyME Go

Being a webOS-based smart TV, our best portable TV overall recommendation—the LG StanbyMe Go —is also suitable for portable smart TV shoppers. It’s an excellent mobile TV that uses the same smart TV operating system found on LG’s regular TVs. So you get access to many apps via the company’s app store, casting support via Apple AirPlay 2, and hands-free voice control via the company’s voice assistant. Apart from your voice, you can also control the TV using the touchscreen or via the included remote control.

Among other features, this “suitcase TV” includes a 27-inch LCD screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio, and the included swivel allows you to use the display in both landscape and portrait orientations. Moreover, you can operate the TV in tablet mode to play digital board games and do other stuff.

Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos are present to deliver a cinematic experience when you are watching movies or TV shows from your streaming service. You can also use the HDMI input to connect external devices, given you can supply them with power.

The StanbyME Go has a built-in battery that lasts up to three hours on a single charge. Fortunately, the battery is removable. So when it eventually gives up, you can just buy a replacement battery, which the company currently sells for under $250 , and give the TV a new lease of life.

LG claims that the suitcase carrying the TV is durable and can withstand everyday mishaps. So you won’t have to worry about damaging your investment with just a few bumps or impacts. Unfortunately, the LG StanbyMe Go isn’t as lightweight as our other recommendations. It’s also a bit expensive, and the display can’t be removed from the case.

LG StanbyME Go’s webOS is a feature-rich smart TV platform that includes all popular streaming services and supports voice control.

How to Choose the Best Online Journal App

Choosing the best online journal app can be tricky. They’re all so good and you need to pick one that does everything you want it to.

Here are a few tips on choosing the best online journal app:

  • Ease of use : The app you select should be straightforward and easy to use. An overly complex app will only make your life difficult.
  • Mobile apps : Since you will mostly be traveling with your phone or ipad, the app must have versions for either iOS or Android or both. However, digital nomads traveling with laptops can always use web apps.
  • Social features : The app you select must be able to integrate with social platforms. If the app has a built-in community feature, it is even better, especially for group tours and backpackers.
  • History : The company developing the app must have a proven history of offering digital journaling services. You will not want to use it only to see that it is no longer under development.
  • Cost : The app you select must be cheap. Expensive subscription plans can put budgetary pressure.
  • Security: If you want your journal entries to be private you need to ensure the app has end to end encryption services.

Best Travel Journal Apps FAQs

Is there a free journaling app.

Yes, there are a few free travel journal apps available today. While some are dedicated digital travel diaries, others are all-purpose digital journals that can be used for keeping travel records.

Day One Journal has a free version, Polarsteps is completely free, Penzu has a free version and Tripcast is free. Try them out and see which one you like the best!

What’s the best app to track everywhere I’ve traveled?

Most of the digital travel diaries listed above can track every place you have traveled . Apps like Day One Journal and Find Penguins can not only track the places you visit but also add additional data like weather, temperature, altitude, address, and more.

Best Travel Journal Apps Summary

Digital travel diaries or journal apps are immensely beneficial (and fun) as they help to organize your travel experiences and keep your memories stored in a single place.

They will allow you to add written notes, images, videos, audio files, tags, etc., and help you to easily share your experiences with friends and family, or other users.

For digital nomads or influencers, some come with customizable layouts for enhanced personalization and some will even allow you to blog automatically and share moments of your trips with your readers.

Try a few out and select the one that is within your budget and meets your needs the best. Hopefully, this list of the best travel journal apps will assist you in finding an awesome journal for your travels! 🙂

‘We are no closer to ridding ourselves of these terrible predators’ … Paul Gadd in Glitter: The Popstar Paedophile.

Glitter: The Popstar Paedophile review – a most sickening nostalgia trip

This relentless documentary takes us back in time to meet the women abused by glam-rock star Gary Glitter as children … and the roadies who tried to stop him (and set his wig on fire) 25 years before he finally got caught

D o you remember – it feels so long ago now – the days when it was a shock to find out that a rich, famous, charismatic man had been using his riches, fame and charisma to rape and abuse women and children and cover it up for years and years?

Glitter: The Popstar Paedophile is the bleakest of nostalgia trips, taking us back to those quaint times, before the public Jimmy Savile revelations, before the R Kelly revelations, before the Rolf Harris revelations, before Harvey Weinstein, Jeffrey Epstein … I could, unfortunately, go on but I think the point is made.

This 90-minute film tells the story with whose main beats we are now grotesquely familiar. We see the fame, this time via plenty of Top of the Pops footage of the glam-rock star Gary Glitter – real name, the name under which he would eventually be prosecuted, Paul Gadd – the high-energy interviews on the likes of Saturday Scene with Sally James, the more stately stuff with Terry Wogan and other chatshow presenters, and even an episode of This Is Your Life that was devoted to him. And, as with most of the documentaries about British celebrity paedophiles and/or abusers, there is a stomach-churning interview with Savile himself from what looks like the late 1980s, by which time they were both well practised in their depravities and giving new meaning to the phrase “hiding in plain sight”. See also Glitter’s 1980 hit What Your Mama Don’t See (Your Mama Don’t Know) replete with lines like “You insist you’re not to be kissed / ’Cause your mama’s not far away … One more glance, I might take a chance / I’m a desperate kind of man.”

We hear, mainly via the prosecuting counsels, from and about the women who would eventually see him convicted of various sex offences. Woman A suffered an attempted rape by 31-year-old Glitter/Gadd in 1975 when she was eight years old. Two other girls, around the age of 12, were raped by him after concerts, their mamas ushered elsewhere by members of the star’s entourage. There is an incident recounted by music journalist Garry Johnson about two men who were hired to work security for a Glitter gig around 1990 who discovered in one of the boxes they were carrying from his van huge numbers of Polaroid photos of children. They confronted him. He cried and offered them money. They refused it and walked off the job, setting fire to his wig on the way. The bathos of the last act should not obscure the fact that this seems to have been the closest his victims got to justice for the next 25 years.

The film assembles its evidence meticulously, relentlessly and unsensationally, including not just the facts that would end up in court but moments that tell us almost more than the lawyers can. There is the fleeting look of absolute terror in Glitter’s eyes when Paula Yates interviews him on the infamous On the Bed segment of The Big Breakfast and asks of his girlfriends: “Are they very young?” Glitter’s relief when she appears to mean women in their early 20s is palpable.

Despite a 1993 story in the News of the World about him having sex with a 14-year-old (attention focused on the photo she had of him without his wig, completely bald) and the rumours that had been swirling for years, it wasn’t until child sexual abuse images were found on a laptop he took in for repair in 1997 that any charges were filed against him. Woman A added her complaint to the charge sheet but the judge reckoned too much time had passed and dropped her case. Woman B, from the News of the World story, was destroyed on cross-examination, and by the judge’s recommendation that the jury should bear in mind that there are 14-year-olds “who look like girls” and 14-year-olds who “look like sophisticated ladies” and consider which category woman B fell into. Gadd was cleared of offences against her, but the public gallery reeled in shock when he pleaded guilty to all the child abuse image charges.

The film slightly rushes the years he then spent in south-east Asia, free to exploit vulnerable children in poorer countries, and the legal systems that effectively function as an international ring of enablers for paedophiles and other abusers. But it does its job in reilluminating the horrors of the past, which are also the horrors of the present and no doubt the horrors of the future too. We have a little more knowledge, a little more awareness, a little more wisdom. Perhaps we are a little more protective. But, as Glitter et al’s long freedom (and usually nugatory sentences if ever caught) show, these terrible, terrible predators are ever in our midst, and we are no closer to ridding ourselves of them.

6 Best Travel Journal Apps for Your Next Trip

Share the love!

Photo of a woman on a train smiling while looking at her smartphone.

I love to look back on past adventures via journals, photos, and videos – but it can be so time consuming!

One of my tricks to organizing all of my travel memories is to use travel journal apps.

Over the years, many of these apps have evolved to include so much more than a way to organize photos and videos.

Many also help you plan your travels, gather and report data, and a few even help you create printed photo books!

Check out this post for my absolute favorite travel journal apps to help you document your adventures through slide shows, photo collages, timelines, maps, photo books, and more.

1 Second Everyday

Photo collage with screenshots of the One Second Everyday travel journal app.

Turn your travel videos into a travel journal summary with 1 Second Everyday.

This app pieces together 1 second video clips to create a video, making it a super easy way to create travel video without the need for video editing skills.

1 Second Everyday is a great way to journal a day or an entire trip with ease. I love that it eliminates the analysis paralysis when it comes to journaling creatively or creating content for your social media.

In my opinion, 1SE is the best free journal app for iPhone and Android overall, not just for recording travel memories.

Pros : Super easy to use and create fun videos that can double as social media content. Cons : Sometimes 1 second just isn’t enough! Download : iOS / Android

Day One Journal

Photo collage of the various iOS, Android, and Mac apps available for the Day One travel journal app.

Day One Journal is an impressive digital travel journal app for iPhones, Android smartphones, Apple Watch, and Mac computers.

Its biggest strength is the collection of data for all photos and videos, such as weather, location, and music. It also includes a timeline view and a map view.

This is a great travel journal app for those that like to reflect about everything that happened on their trip.

Day One Journal will make it a bit easier to remember the finer details, like weather and addresses.

Pros : Not just an app – also has a Mac app and a Safari browser extension so you can work on your Mac laptop or desktop. Cons : No browser extension or software for non-Mac laptops and desktop computers. Download : iOS / Android / Mac / Browser Extensions

Photo collage of various version of the Grid Diary app.

Grid Diary combines digital journal capabilities with a planner for one ultimate app.

Users can keep track of all they need to do, create journal entries with guided writing prompts, add stickers and tags, and gather statistics.

This app is more of a traditional text-based journal and planner, but sometimes that is really all folks want!

Pros : One app to keep you organized and record memories. Cons : Most of the valuable features are only available in the premium version (can’t blame ’em though!) Download : iOS / Android

Momento pulls in data from all of your social channels to piece together a journey’s story, such as Instagram, Facebook, Spotify, and Uber.

You can keep your stories private or share with friends to select social media channels, as well as via text message or email.

Momento is a great travel journal app for those that are heavy social media users. You’re already documenting your travels elsewhere, but this app will pull them together in a cohesive way.

Pros : Super easy to use and affordable premium subscription available with extra features. Cons : Only available on iOS. Last major update was in 2016. Download : iOS

Photo collage with a photo book and map for the PolarSteps app.

PolarSteps is a fun app that helps you plan and track your travels.

However, the standout feature with this travel journal app is that you can transform your journal into a printed photo book!

The PolarSteps book includes summaries and stats pulled from app usage, such as maps, miles or kilometers traveled, number of countries visited, and so on.

In my opinion, this is not only the best free travel journal app for iPhone and Android, but one of the best traveling apps for iPhone and Android, too.

Pros : Top notch usability design makes it super easy to use. Cons : Some limitations with customizing the travel book, such as inability to choose size and limited number of color themes. Download : iOS / Android

Keep mom and dad updated on your travels without annoying your Facebook or Instagram friends with every single photo you take via Tripcast .

Or if you’d rather not share with everyone you can use Tripcast to share photos with just your travel group.

Tripcast is a great way to track longer journeys and still keep up with your friends and family back home.

Pros : Makes sharing photos from everyone on a group trip seamless. Cons : Limited social media capabilities despite being one of its focus features. Download : iOS / Android

I have been hunting and hunting for a travel journal that is easily updating- shareable with friends, with a push notification kind of thing. There are SO many and have read and read. I want to journal and add pictures. I don't want anything that does anything automatically or populates anything. I want to write and add photos or maps as I choose. Thank you SO much

Revenues at Viacom18 , the media arm of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani ‘s conglomerate Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), witnessed an uptick for the 2023-24 financial year.

Popular on Variety

News business revenue was up 19% year-on-year. Sports was the biggest driver of revenue growth for Viacom18, while news revenue growth was driven by both TV network and digital platforms, the company said. Sports properties like the Indian Premier League cricket tournament, cricket series featuring the Indian national team and South Africa’s SA20 cricket league, helped Viacom18 “significantly ramp up its presence” in the sports segment, the company said.

The release of “Fighter,” India’s highest grossing film of 2024 so far, drove the growth in the movies segment. The company also noted a strong advertising revenue growth across its TV network businesses on the back of robust viewership share.

In February this year, plans for Viacom18’s merger with Disney’s Star India in a deal estimated to be worth $8.5 billion, were confirmed. The joint venture, which still needs regulatory approval, will “seek to lead the digital transformation of the media and entertainment industry in India and offer consumers high-quality and comprehensive content offerings anytime and anywhere. With the addition of Disney’s acclaimed films and shows to Viacom18’s renowned productions and sports offerings, the JV will offer a compelling, accessible, and novel digital-focused entertainment experience to people in India and the Indian diaspora globally,” Viacom18 said.

SmarTrip Goes Mobile: You Can Now Pay for Metro, DC-Area Transit Via iPhone

Iphone and apple watch users can buy or add an existing smartrip card in apple wallet, then just "tap and go," metro says, by adam tuss, news4 anchor & transportation reporter and sophia barnes • published september 1, 2020 • updated on september 1, 2020 at 12:18 pm.

SmarTrip cards are going digital — for iPhone or Apple Watch users who want a mobile-pay option.

Starting Tuesday, commuters throughout the Washington, D.C., area can use Apple Pay to board Metro trains, buses and regional transit lines.

It's the first mobile-pay option Metro has rolled out. All you need to do is add a new or existing SmarTrip card into the Apple Wallet app and tap your device where you used to touch a SmarTrip card.

No longer will you have to stand in line at the vending machine or rifle through your wallet, Metro says.

It's not available to everyone. You must have an iPhone 8, an Apple Watch Series 3 or a newer device. All of the old payment methods, including physical cards, will still work.

Options for riders with other phones, such as Android, are in the works, News4 Transportation Reporter Adam Tuss has learned.

The new service works anywhere SmarTrip cards are accepted, Metro says. That includes 91 Metro stations across D.C., Maryland and Virginia; Metro parking lots and garages; all Metrobuses and regional bus providers: ART, DASH, Fairfax Connector, Cue, Ride On, TheBus, Circulator, Loudoun County Transit and Potomac and Rappahannock Transit/PRTC.

D.C. is the first city in North America to roll out Apple Pay as a payment option accepted universally throughout the system, Metro says.

Here's how it works. If you want a new digital SmarTrip card, it can be purchased within the Apple Wallet app .

To transfer an existing card with its value to an iPhone or Apple Watch, open the Wallet app, tap the plus sign and choose SmartTrip. After that, the app will guide you through transferring your balance.

It appears that if you choose to transfer the balance from an existing card, your physical card is put out of service and can no longer be used. So, if you're chronically on low-battery, consider having backup options in your wallet.

However, the app also gives a note that your transit card may be available when your iPhone needs to be recharged.

Here’s how to add your existing Smartrip card to your Apple wallet @nbcwashington #wmata pic.twitter.com/dUCqtlw9qz — Adam Tuss (@AdamTuss) September 1, 2020

To pay, tap your device on the same area where you would normally tap a SmarTrip card. You don't need to open the app or even wake up your phone or use Touch ID or Face ID for it to work — just "tap and go," Metro says (You're automatically signed up for this feature, but can disable it in your device settings).

"If you have an iPhone or Apple Watch, you already have everything you need to simply tap and go," Metro General Manager and CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld said in a statement.

To add more funds through Apple Wallet, you'll need to have a debit or credit card set up for Apple Pay. Metro also gives a second reload option, a separate newly-launched app.

Metro has debuted a new SmarTrip app that can help you add funds, buy passes, manage multiple cards and more.

The mobile option will also allow SmartTrip support in multiple languages, as well as more options for riders who have disabilities.

Metro says they hope the mobile option will be easier for tourists and when large-scale events eventually resume, because fewer people will need to add money at the vending machines.

Cities across the world allow Apple Pay as a payment option on some transit, including New York, Portland, Hong Kong and London. But D.C. offering this mobile payment option for all Metro and regional transit is unique in North America.

Metro has been working on a mobile option for fare payments for years. But there are no plans to stop the usage of physical SmarTrip cards.
