Methodology   The 2024 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best Hotel Awards are determined based on the quality and quantity of traveler reviews and ratings posted on Tripadvisor over the 12-month period between January 1 and December 31, 2023 , as well as an additional editorial process.

Tripadvisor is proud to serve a broad and diverse community of travelers from all over the world. As such, Tripadvisor reserves the right to determine the eligibility of any property, business, destination or point of interest listed on Tripadvisor for an award based on additional factors that reflect Tripadvisor corporate policies and values. For more details on Tripadvisor's awards policy, see here .

Sustainable Methodology Tripadvisor partnered with sustainability management company BeCause to collate data detailing hotels that had been certified by at least one of a number of Global Sustainable Tourism Council and Travalyst approved organizations between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2023 . Tripadvisor defined 70 sustainability terms and phrases such as "environmentally friendly", "refillable", "eco-tourism", and "waste reduction" and identified relevant reviews from the 12 month period. After ranking the hotels, Tripadvisor used digital listening tool Brandwatch to analyze approximately 23,954 Tripadvisor English-language reviews between January and December 2023 for certified hotels that not only mentioned sustainability, but also had a Tripadvisor bubble rating of 4 above. This allowed the identification of destinations in order of rank, starting with the destination with the highest percentage (%) of reviews discussing sustainability amongst all reviews of that destination. Please see the full methodology here .

2021 brings a return to confidence

In early March, Accenture and Tripadvisor surveyed 1,000 respondents from across the United States to find out how their travel plans were shaping up for 2021. A year after the pandemic hit US shores, we wanted to explore how Americans, across a comprehensive range of demographic groups and income levels, feel about travel, where they might go next, their anticipated spend behavior and the kind of trip that they are looking forward to taking next.

We found that travel confidence is back — and in a big way. Americans are pushing out of their comfort zone and expanding their travel radius to go further, spend more and most importantly, relax. Of respondents who did not take a trip at all in 2020, 61% said they were comfortable doing so in 2021.

Of course, not everyone’s making plans at the same pace, respondents of our survey earning a yearly income of $100,000+ are leading the way with 34% having already booked a trip for 2021, compared to 19% of the remaining population.

There are clear signs that people are keen to get back on the road — and up in the sky.  A quarter (25%) of individuals earning a yearly income of over $100,000 are considering international air travel, and double that — just over half (54%) of the respondents earning a yearly income of more than $50,000 — are considering domestic air travel for their next trip.

These positive indicators of US travelers’ intent and confidence to travel are only part of the story. Interesting trends are emerging regarding where travelers plan to go, and the type of vacations they plan to have when they get there.

In this report, we explore three standout trends emerging in consumer sentiment , that are shaping the US travel market in 2021.

  • Early Adventurers From book to trip, travelers are moving quickly as they plan longer adventures farther from home.
  • Farther Escapes The destinations and experiences making a comeback as travel confidence returns.
  • Luxury in Demand Millennials are leading the charge to spend big on luxury and relaxation.

We found that travel confidence is back — and in a big way. Americans are pushing out of their comfort zone and expanding their travel radius to go further, spend more and most importantly, relax. Of respondents who did not take a trip at all in 2020, 61% said they were comfortable doing so in 2021.

The popularity — and necessity — of staying close to home that was a feature of the last 12 months appears to be waning. While in 2020 concerns about health and safety, as well as strict lockdowns, drove the popularity of staycations, in 2021, travelers are eager to get back out. In fact, 22% of US respondents have already booked a trip and are looking to travel longer, farther and within the next three months.

From Book to Trip

Just over half (51%) of respondents who have already booked a trip had a booking lead time (i.e. the time between booking and departure) of less than three months. This may be because early adventurers are more relaxed about COVID-19 factors with 37% comfortable traveling without the vaccine (vs. 21% of unbooked travelers).

People who traveled in 2020 are also more likely to have already booked travel for 2021. Of those who traveled in 2020, 41% have already booked in 2021, compared with 13% of those who did not travel at all in 2020.

Of those who have yet to make a booking, some are waiting for pandemic-related developments to unfold before traveling. Twenty-eight percent (28%) of unbooked travelers say they are waiting on herd immunity before booking a trip, while 22% are waiting to be vaccinated.

With 80% of those travelers who are planning to spend less than $5,000 on travel yet to finalize their 2021 trip plans, there is a tremendous opportunity for travel businesses to capture their attention and secure their bookings.

Longer and Farther Trips

Whether they have booked a trip yet or not, our survey found a majority of travelers are planning to enjoy longer vacations in 2021. Eighty-seven percent (87%) of respondents that have booked a trip and 77% of those who have not yet booked a trip note that they are planning a 3+ day getaway.

Early adventurers are planning to venture farther from home. People who have already booked a trip are 5x more likely to be traveling internationally than take a staycation (i.e. a trip less than three hours from home). This compares to unbooked respondents who are only 25% more likely to be planning an international trip over a staycation.

tripadvisor travel trends

2021 is quickly shaping up to be the year of more extensive trips in the US — gravitating toward more domestic travel and on the brink of the return of international travel. Another notable trend: the comeback and renewed interest in cities and cruises as people return to pre-pandemic choices. This is a potential indicator that consumers are feeling increasingly confident that it is safe to travel to more crowded destinations again, particularly as Covid rates continue to stabilize in the US.

Back in the Air

Our research shows that 70% of all respondents said that their next trip would be domestic (more than three hours’ journey), one in five (19%) are opting for international, and just 12% for a staycation (a trip within a three-hour drive).

tripadvisor travel trends

Millennials earning above a yearly income of $50,000 are the most eager to fly. Three out of five (58%) of those surveyed are considering domestic air (compared to 41% among other groups) and one in four (25%) are considering international air travel (that’s 80% higher than the average among respondents in other demographic groups).

Short-range (fewer than four hours) domestic flights are exhibiting high popularity across all generations. Nearly 40% of respondents earning a yearly salary greater than $50,000 are considering these flights for their next trip in 2021, a clear rebound from this time in 2020.

Many US travelers are looking to leave their home areas and packing for more distant domestic regions, flocking particularly to the Southern and Pacific US regions.

Cities make a comeback, but beaches are still No. 1

Although the beach remains the top trip choice for most age and income segments with 30% citing this as their next Spring/Summer destination, our research shows a renewed interest in cities as a destination. One in four (25%) say city destinations are the preferred option for their next trip, a close second to beaches and ahead of other types of nature travel.

The choice of urban instead of nature destinations is particularly pronounced among younger, less affluent travelers. Gen Z respondents earning less than $100,000 annually are twice as likely to visit a city (30%) than a nature destination (beaches excluded). Among the other generations, Gen Xers earning $100,000+ annually are the only ones that show a slight preference of nature.

The adventurous American coasts across all income ranges are interested in cities for their next trip: 34% of Californians and New Yorkers say a city is where they are headed next.

Cruises in consideration

The research also shows cruises as an emerging travel experience for some younger travelers. Of all respondents who identified a cruise as their next leisure trip, over half (58%) were Gen Zers or Millennials. This is consistent with previous research from Accenture 1 which found that Gen Zers and Millennials were 35% more likely to feel comfortable taking a cruise in the future than the older generations, globally. While we expect GenX and Boomer interest to recover in the long term, this level of interest from the younger demographics is certainly encouraging for cruise operators’ long-term goals.

tripadvisor travel trends

After a stressful and complicated year for many, it’s no surprise that travelers whose main goal is relaxation are willing to splurge a little for their next trip. For more affluent travelers, this ultimate desire for a relaxing vacation translates into an intent to spend more on indulgent and luxurious experiences.

Saving to Spend

While the pandemic has been tough for many, some groups — with much of their normal expenditure decreased – have had the benefit of saving over the last 12 months. Thirty-four (34%) percent of Gen-Z and Millennial respondents saved more over the past year than previous years, compared with 25% of Gen-X and Boomer respondents.

High-income Millennials are most likely to spend what they’ve saved on travel. In fact, 32% of high-income Millennials are planning to increase their travel spending in 2021 - almost double the average respondent. While most segments identified cost as a leading factor when booking their next trip (close to 60% of respondents), only 40% of high-income Millennials listed this as a concern.

Must-Have Luxury

High-income Millennials are traveling in style with 37% either having already booked or planning to book a luxury vacation (more than $5,000) as their next travel experience. We observed the highest rate of luxury bookings and planned bookings among Millennials compared with other high-earning groups. Additionally, 48% of high-income Millennials traveled at least once in 2020 and 32% had already booked a trip in 2021 by the time of the survey in early March (before vaccines were widely available to this group).

On the other hand, 62% of respondents across all demographics planning to spend more than $5,000 on their next trip have not yet made a booking, offering an opportunity for upscale businesses and services to capture the attention and bookings of this high-value traveler segment.

tripadvisor travel trends

After a year during which not only travel but regular self-care indulgences have been almost completely inaccessible, the emphasis is very much on relaxation for many US leisure travelers in 2021. Across all respondents, the desire to take it easy overrides everything else, with 45% saying relaxation is what they are seeking on their next trip. This is in line with the findings from Accenture’s consumer research that highlights a strong emphasis on self-care and wellbeing, with 67% of consumers saying they’ll spend more time and money on this in 2021. In terms of other motivations, 33% of respondents indicate that cultural tours are the next most popular travel interest.

This time last year, the majority of travel was restricted. A year later, with vaccine distribution in place and infection rates continuing to steady or decline in the US, the majority of US consumers are eager to escape the confines of their four walls and enjoy traveling again.

Coming out of a year fraught with uncertainty, people are taking advantage of the moment, and booking and traveling within 90 days. They are eager to leave their local areas to travel further and stay longer. In this time of growing optimism and adventure, there is no better time for brands and businesses to get on the travel agendas of these eager consumers.

Whether it’s a domestic or international flight, young travelers are going the distance and heading to beaches, cities and even on cruises. We know from experience that where they go, others will follow. With them, they bring hope for those areas that have been hit hard by the pandemic. For local businesses and experiences, it’s important to get ready as soon as possible for recovery to capture the tourist spending that should come with this returned influx. Shifting dollars back into advertising and promotions is critical to remind adventurers that your business has weathered the storm and is ready to welcome them back.

Lastly, and more than anything, all travelers are planning to spend more to achieve what they most crave after a pandemic year: relaxation and indulgence. Brands have a tremendous opportunity to get in front of this high-spending leisure and luxury audience as travelers look to make their first trip back their best and most indulgent yet.

In conclusion, if the experiences of the last twelve months have taught us anything, it’s that things can change very fast. The impetus driving people to travel is greater than ever before and with it, for brands and businesses, comes the opportunity to attract the purchasing power of this high-value and passionate audience. The future of travel starts now.

Tripadvisor: Consumer Travel Trends for 2022

travel

NEEDHAM, Massachusetts—A new travel trends research paper released by Tripadvisor in partnership with Ipsos MORI reveals how consumers are planning to travel in 2022 and beyond and how their attitudes and behaviors in relation to travel have changed as compared to pre-pandemic. While outside factors like COVID-19 variants, international travel rules, and staffing shortages still can represent threats to traveler behaviors, year-end sentiment and search data show ongoing demand for travel remains high. As travelers spend more, cultural experience providers (tours and attractions), tourism businesses catering to domestic audiences, and companies adhering to safety standards will benefit from tourism demand

The report, titled “Travel in 2022—A Look Ahead” combines consumer sentiment analysis, gathered by Ipsos MORI on behalf of Tripadvisor, via surveys in five major international markets and behavioral analysis of Tripadvisor’s first-party search data—uncovering several travel patterns such as the average length of trips planned for 2022 and the amount travelers are looking to spend, according to searches they actively made on the Tripadvisor platform before year-end.

“Despite new variants of COVID-19, consumers across the globe still want to travel and explore. This is evident in our month-over-month search data which shows a consistent, healthy increase in page views post-holidays,” said Kanika Soni, chief commercial officer, Tripadvisor, Inc. “Travelers are quickly adapting to local public health conditions, with cleanliness and safety remaining important factors in their planning.”

Unsurprisingly, the report continues to show that the pandemic weighs on the minds of people across the countries featured in this study. The good news is that reported travel intent for 2022 compared with 2019 and analysis of planned average trip spend show prospects for a strong year ahead in the hospitality industry.

Key findings from the study include:

  • Planned travel in 2022 surpasses actual travel in 2019.
  • Across the five key markets around the world that were surveyed, those likely to travel for leisure purposes in 2022 outpaces pre-pandemic reported travel levels.
  • In the United Kingdom, 78 percent of respondents said that they are likely to travel for leisure in 2022, compared to 72 percent of those who said that they traveled for leisure in 2019.
  • In the United States, 2022 leisure travel intent is up 8 percentage points compared to 2019, with 71 percent saying they are likely to travel for leisure in 2022.
  • Singapore leads the way in travel optimism, with 82 percent reporting they are likely to vacation in 2022, up 2 percentage points compared to 2019. Australia (72 percent) and Japan (51 percent) are trending similarly, with those who are planning a leisure trip in 2022 up 7 percentage points and 5 percentage points from those who reported traveling in 2019, respectively.

Average spend per trip for 2022 is beyond that of 2019, as travelers look to level up their travel experience:

  • According to Tripadvisor site behavioral data, U.S. travelers are expected to spend 29 percent more on their average trip in 2022 than they did in 2019.
  • In Australia, average booking rates are expected to be up by 16 percent in 2022 against 2019.
  • Singaporean travelers booking values are also expected to increase by an average of 7 percent.
  • On the other end of the spectrum, the average Japanese traveler is expecting to spend 30 percent less in 2022 compared with 2019. In Italy, average booking spend is expected to be down 19 percent. While in the United Kingdom, travelers are planning to spend slightly less on 2022 travel than they did in 2019 (down 1 percent).
  • Shifting from behavior to sentiment, over a quarter of travelers in each of the five markets surveyed said it is more important now than before the pandemic to splurge on a big trip. In the United States, roughly 3 in 10 U.S. travelers (29 percent) who traveled for leisure in 2019 said it’s more important now than before the pandemic to splurge on a big trip. Twenty-eight percent of Singaporean and Australian travelers, 27 percent of Japanese travelers, and 25 percent of U.K. travelers said the same.

Domestic travel continues to be prominent:

  • While a sizable proportion of consumers across most of the markets surveyed plan to travel abroad for leisure in 2022, traveling within their home country is still the most favored option.
  • Seventy-four percent of Singaporean respondents plan to travel domestically for leisure, compared with 53 percent who plan to travel abroad for leisure. Seventy-three percent of U.K. travelers say they plan to travel within the United Kingdom for leisure compared with 48 percent planning to travel abroad.
  • In the United States and in Australia, 68 percent of respondents in each market said they are likely to travel domestically in 2022, while 29 percent of U.S. travelers said they are likely to travel overseas in 2022 compared to 38 percent of Australians.
  • In Japan, 50 percent of Japanese respondents reported that they are likely to travel within their home country in 2022 compared to 10 percent of those likely to travel internationally.

Travelers are seeking new experiences:

  • More than a third to nearly half of all travelers surveyed in the United States (41 percent), United Kingdom (38 percent), Australia (46 percent), Japan (34 percent), and Singapore (49 percent) said that traveling to a destination they’ve never been to before would be more important to them now compared to trips they took in 2019 when choosing where to travel.
  • Three-quarters (75 percent) of U.S. travelers said that it’s important they “see new places” when thinking about their future travel plans, 74 percent of Australians, 73 percent of Singaporeans, 70 percent of U.K. travelers, and over half (59 percent) in Japan said the same.
  • The top three most important considerations across the markets surveyed in future travel plans to visit a destination were to get immersive by seeing new places, having new experiences, and learning about history and culture.
  • Forty-four percent of Singaporean travelers, 38 percent of Australians, and a third (34 percent) of U.S. travelers and U.K. travelers respectively said that it’s more important now than before the pandemic that they choose a destination where they can immerse themselves in “authentic local experiences.” A quarter (25 percent) of Japanese travelers said the same.
  • In both the United States and Australia, 30 percent of travelers said it’s more important now that they “pack as many activities” into their holiday travel as possible. While in the United Kingdom, 28 percent said it’s more important for them to plan an action-packed travel experience in 2022 or beyond.
  • About two in 10 travelers in each of the five markets surveyed said they will do more guided cultural activities—those activities and tours where subject matter experts and professional guides allow for travelers to sit back, learn, relax, and see all that an area has to offer—when planning trips in 2022 or beyond than before the pandemic (except in Japan where this proportion was 14 percent).

COVID-19 case counts, safety protocols, quarantine restrictions, and cleanliness are all key factors in travel decision making in 2022:

  • Eighty-five percent of Singaporean travelers, nearly three-quarters of Japanese (73 percent) and Australian (74 percent) travelers, 72 percent of U.K. travelers, and 70 percent of U.S. travelers say that cleanliness measures of a hospitality business will be an important factor in their travel decision making next year, even after COVID-19 cases have dropped worldwide.
  • Approximately seven in 10 respondents in each of the markets said that destinations that have a low number of COVID-19 cases are important when making a decision on where to travel next.
  • One-third of the U.K. travelers (32 percent) and U.S. travelers (33 percent) who aren’t traveling next year said they’ve decided against it because of uncertainty surrounding possible travel restrictions. Over half (55 percent) of Singaporeans, 47 percent of Australians, and a quarter (25 percent) of Japanese respondents cited the same reason.

Choosing your next vacation isn’t just about where you visit, but where you stay.

To help travelers book the vacation possible, Tripadvisor , one of the biggest online travel agencies, revealed its  2024 Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best Awards  — including the list of the world’s best hotels .

The list ranks destinations that received a high volume of above-and-beyond reviews and opinions from the Tripadvisor community over the past year — out of 8 million listings, fewer than 1% achieved the milestone.

New York City is still one of the top tourist destinations in the world, so it’s no shock that three of the top stays in the US are right here in Manhattan: The Luma Hotel in Times Square, The Bryant Park Hotel and Casablanca Hotel by Library Hotel Collection, also in Times Square.

New York City may be the City That Never Sleeps. Still, as one of the top tourist destinations in the world, it's no shock that three of the top stays in the US are right here in Manhattan

But although many people agree NYC is the greatest city in the world, none of its hotels made the list for the best stays on a global scale.

The top hotel in the world is the Hotel Colline de France in Brazil, according to Tripadvisor.

Hotel Colline de France in Brazil

The luxurious stay was highly rated for its “sophistication and comfort” shown through its glamorous rooms and luscious spa.

The live piano music played at breakfast and complimentary sparkling wine were also nice touches.

“The hotel’s sensational design and warm atmosphere make it a unique choice for an elegant, yet cozy, getaway,” Tripadvisor said.

The top hotel in the US is the Shore Hotel in Santa Monica, California, according to Tripadvisor.

The pet-friendly hotel stands out with its beautiful view of the ocean and eco-friendly but slick design — its proximity to the Santa Monica Pier also helps to attract guests.

Travelers also raved about the variety of food options, including the in-room breakfast options and the poolside bar.

“A stylish atmosphere and attention to detail ensure a fab stay for you and your furry friend,” Tripadvisor said.

Travel could be a good deal this summer. Here's when plane ticket prices will peak.

tripadvisor travel trends

Spring is springing, and according to Hopper, it’s time to start thinking about your summer vacation plans.

New data from the online booking site shows some favorable trends for travelers in the next few months, including slightly lower airfares compared with 2023 and hotel and car rental prices that are more or less flat year-over-year.

Here’s what you need to know as you prepare to book, whether you’re looking for a domestic getaway or go on an overseas adventure. It’s also not too late to take advantage of deals on some last-minute trips.

How much are spring and summer plane tickets?

According to Hopper, the best deals right now are on domestic airline tickets. Round-trip flights within the U.S. are averaging $290 in April, but prices are expected to rise in the months ahead.

Hopper’s data shows prices for domestic flights will peak between May and June at $315 on average, then will gradually fall through the summer, reaching a low of $264 on average in September.

On a call with investors discussing first-quarter earnings Wednesday, Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said summer travel demand has been pushed forward in recent years in part because schools, especially in the South, are finishing their summer breaks earlier in the year.

Short vs. long cruises: Which one is right for you? Here's how they compare.

This summer also will be a good time to travel internationally; Hopper data shows fares to most destinations abroad are down compared with last year.

“Airfare to international destinations continues to improve following two years of bloated prices due to quickly recovering demand, high fuel prices and supply constraints. Airfare to most major regions of the world has dropped compared to last year with the exception of trips to Canada,” Hayley Berg, Hopper’s chief economist, said in the report. “International fares remain higher than pre-pandemic levels to most regions, as higher fuel prices persist and airlines continue to rebuild capacity to many regions.”

How much will a hotel room for the spring and summer cost?

Hotel prices remain mostly flat compared with the same time last year. Rooms in the U.S. are averaging $206 a night; better deals are available in some trending international destinations like Osaka, Japan, and Istanbul, Turkey.

According to Hopper, Las Vegas, New York and Chicago remain popular destinations in the U.S.

Will car rental prices rise this summer?

Car rental prices also haven’t increased much since last year and average $42 a day, according to Hopper.

The report shows most travelers rent a car for about four days, and warm-weather destinations like Orlando and Los Angeles remain popular pickup points.

Pearl Outlaw stepping into Hyundia's robotaxi.

Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 robotaxi has become the first autonomous car to pass the national DMV driving exam – unleashing a new lease on life for the physically and mentally impaired who long to travel.

A new film for Hyundai, a collaboration between the creative agency Jung von Matt and directed by Park Pictures’ Daniel Mercadante, centers around a visually impaired World Championship rower, Pearl Outlaw, and her mother Ruth who live in Portland, Oregon.

Pearl’s condition, called Retinitis Pigmentosa, prevents her from owning a driver’s license – limiting her ability to travel- even around her hometown.

The fascinating short film shows how Hyundai’s autonomous driving technology has transformed Pearl’s challenge into new discoveries, more autonomy and a welcome sense of freedom.

In the movie, the IONIQ 5 robotaxi undergoes a driving test in Las Vegas by an official DMV driving examiner through the Strip and suburban parts of the city. And- get this- the IONIQ5 robotaxi completes the test with a perfect score.

Hyundai’s new initiative aims to shift perceptions of autonomous driving technology, which currently suffers from a lack of trust, and to illustrate how it can benefit people’s daily lives without boundaries.

The story of Pearl underlines how Hyundai is committed to opening a new era of trust and empowerment that could transform millions of lives for people like Pearl and those with physical or mental disabilities, who might never have the chance to undergo a driving test.

After experiencing the IONIQ5 robotaxi for herself, Pearl's journey symbolizes the potential for independence through innovation, offering a glimpse into a future where technology broadens horizons for everyone.

We caught up with Pearl on her favorite places to relax and unwind in Portland.

“At the top of my list as a favorite place in Portland is Saint Honorie pastry shop,” she says. “This is my go-to spot for lunch and morning coffee. They have incredible pastries and sandwiches that have a local reputation for being the best in the area.”

“My favorite place to shop is Portland Leather Goods. This is a local company that makes bags coats, shoes and wallets, among other artisan products. I have three items from them, and I particularly love their shoes. Everything they do is amazing quality with beautiful colors! I love going into their store because it smells like leather and suede.”

“One of the most unique places I’ve come to be very fond of is the farms on Sauvie Island. There are quite a few, but I love going there in the summer to pick blackberries, peaches and blueberries. There are also a few beaches on Sauvie Island and a number of farm-to-table restaurants, but my favorite are the farms where you can pick your own fruit.”

Watch Pearl’s journey in the new film as she experiences today’s advanced AI-based driverless vehicle technology—no longer a vision of the future.
