So let’s dive in right away!

About Sal Cape Verde

First, let’s explore a bit more about the history of Sal…

And perhaps you even wonder,

What Is Sal, Cape Verde Known For?

Sal, Cape Verde, in recent years, is known for its beautiful beaches , crystal-clear waters, and year-round sunshine, making it a popular destination for sun-seekers (in winter) and beach lovers. Also, the strong trade winds make Sal an ideal destination for water sports enthusiasts, such as kitesurfers and windsurfers. And let’s not forget its

But before tourism, Sal was primarily known for its salt mines. In the 15th century, Portuguese explorers first discovered the inhabited island, naming it after the salt mines Pedra de Lume (you can now visit) they found on its shores. Due to the island’s strategic location in the Atlantic, they forced enslaved Africans to do dangerous mining labor that ultimately became a major income source for the island as well as fishing and agriculture.

Over time, Sal became an important trading hub, with ships stopping by to restock on supplies before continuing their journeys across the Atlantic. This is why the island has a rich cultural heritage, with a mix of African, Caribbean, and European influences that is evident in its music, dance, and cuisine. Today, the island’s main town, Santa Maria, is a bustling hub of activity, with brightly colored buildings and a vibrant atmosphere that continues to celebrate its unique heritage and culture.

Check out our travel guide video, where we take a dive into the Salt mines and do many other unique things in Sal, Cape Verde.

Sal Cape Verde Airport

Sal’s airport, Amílcar Cabral International Airport, is the main gateway to the island and the rest of Cape Verde. It serves many international and domestic airlines, connecting major cities across Europe, Africa, and the Americas. It is named after Amílcar Cabral, a revered Cape Verdean and Guinea-Bissauan independence leader who played a key role in the struggle against colonialism in the 20th century.

The airport is located on the east coast of Sal, about 2 kilometers northeast of the island’s capital and largest town, Espargos. And approximately 18 km north of the tourist town Santa Maria, which is a 20-minute drive by taxi, shuttle bus, or rental car. Many of the hotels and resorts in Santa Maria offer guests courtesy transportation from the airport to their accommodations.

Now when you want to book a holiday to Cape Verde, there is perhaps a question on your mind…

How To Get To Sal, Cape Verde?

You get to Sal, Cape Verde, by flying into Sal’s Amílcar Cabral International Airport through a direct flight from a major European city or a connecting flight via Lisbon International Airport. You can also get to Sal, Cape Verde, via a domestic flight from the islands: Santiago, Boa Vista, or Sao Vicente.

The easiest way to get to Cape Verde is to book a TUI holiday , which includes a stay at one of their 5-star resorts and a direct flight to Sal, Cape Verde. Or you book a direct flight via TUI Airways because they operate direct flights to Sal and Boa Vista from Birmingham, Manchester, and Gatwick airports in the UK and many other major European cities.

When no direct flight is available from your nearest city, booking a connecting flight via Lisbon International Airport is best. For example, the airline TAP Portugal operates direct flights from Lisbon to Cape Verde daily. I recommend using Skyscanner to check for the cheapest flights and best connections.

Best Things To Do in Sal, Cape Verde

Travelers mostly visit Sal just to relax, enjoy the beach and soak up some sun rays. There are still cool things to do and unique places to visit on the island. Let’s give you a list of fun things to do on the island.

Salinas de Pedra de Lume

Salinas de Pedra de Lume is the Cape Verde Islands’ salt lake. It’s probably the most famous landmark of the Cape Verde Islands. The lakes are on the list of UNESCO World Heritage List nominees. In the 18th century, the salt ponds were used to exploit salt. The export of salt was the most significant income source for the Cape Verde Islands.

Now the most significant income is tourism, so they turned Salinas into a natural spa where you can get a salt and mud cure. And float/ swim in the salt lakes and experience the water that is 27 times saltier than the ocean. There is a small entrance fee, a small restaurant, and a spa where you can book massages and other treatments. Almost every island tour will drop you off at the Salinas. There is enough time for a swim on some tours, while others are just there for a quick visit. One of the best Sal Tours to book for swimming in the salt lakes is the Sal: Island Experience Tour , with a certified local guide with a rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars and over 600 reviews.

Buracona – The Blue Eye

On the northwest side of Sal, you have another popular tourist attraction: Buracona. It is one of the 7 wonders of the island. Buracona is a bay 5 km north of Palmeira, which you can reach by an unpaved road along the coastline. At Buracona, there are two reasons you want to pay a visit. Swim in the natural pool and see the Blue Eye.

At exactly noon (or around noon. Depending on the month), the sun shines directly into an underwater cave and turns it into what looks like a blue eye. Expect a lot of people around this time of day, so that it can be very crowded during peak season. If you come afterward, there is a big chance you won’t have to pay an entrance fee.

Also, the waves carved a natural pool into the rocks. If the conditions are good, you can swim, relax in the natural pool, and have a beautiful ocean view. Not all tours allow you to swim in the natural pool due to a busy schedule, so the best tour to book is the Salt Lake, Blue Eye, and Shark Bay Tour .

You can swim with sharks in Sal!! Swimming with sharks was the highlight of our trip to Sal and the most adrenaline-filled experience of our time on the Cape Verde Islands. If you haven’t checked out travel guide video of Sal, I recommend you would, as you can see Kirsten’s experience swimming with lemon sharks.

On the east coast of Sal is Shark Bay, where you can swim with lemon sharks that can reach a length of 3,5 meters. These sharks are ‘vegetarian sharks’ because they only eat greens and fish. They are more afraid of you than that you should be afraid of them. And there are only a few places in the world where swimming with lemon sharks is possible.

Best Time To Visit Shark Bay

Shark Bay is close to Pedra Lume and is ideal to combine with a visit to Salinas. On the road from Espargos to the Salinas de Pedra de Lume, turn right to a dirt road just before Pedra Lume heading south. There isn’t a big sign, but follow the tire tracks for 20 minutes along the coast, and you will get to Shark Bay. You’re at the right spot if you see a small cabin with local guides and parked cars! The local guides will tell you all you need to know about the sharks and where it’s best to enter the water. Make sure to rent their water shoes because of sea urchins.

Most people come between 11 am. – 3 p.m. It can be bustling, which doesn’t make getting close to the sharks easy. Because of the crowds and noise, the sharks will stay at a distance, so you will only see some fins popping out of the water.

We recommend going to Shark Bay at around 4 pm. Most tourists are already gone, and the guides have enough time to explain to you how to get close to the sharks. Lemon sharks are reef sharks, so they swim in shallow water. Swimming with these sharks also means swimming/walking in shallow water.

But don’t worry if you don’t want to explore the island without a guide. There are plenty of tours that visit Shark Bay. Not all tours give you the opportunity to swim with the sharks. So the best one to book is Sal Shark Bay Experience Tour .

A great way to spend part of your day is to go snorkeling. The best months for underwater visibility are between July – December, but the other months are also great for snorkeling.

There are fun tours that take you to different reefs, shipwrecks, and Christ of the Seas, an underwater statue at 6 meters deep and 200 meters off the coast of Santa Maria beach. Due to strong currents and windy days, it is recommended to book a snorkeling tour where you can jump on and off the boat at several places. And the best tour is the Guided Snorkeling Shipwreck and Reef Tour.

Buggy or Quad Tour

A quad bike or buggy tour is a thrilling way to explore Sal’s rugged terrain and discover hidden corners of the island. Many tours take visitors off-road and into the desert, where they can see wildlife, unique rock formations, and stunning panoramic views. One of the best buggy tours in Sal is the 4WD Buggy Desert Adventure .

Explore The Stunning Beaches

Sal is famous for its beautiful sandy beaches, which are a paradise for sun-seekers, swimmers, and water sports enthusiasts. Enjoy a snack, unlimited beer and soft drinks, and hotel transfers.

Sal, Cape Verde, is known for its stunning beaches, with crystal-clear waters and soft white sand. Here are some of the best beaches to visit:

Shark Bay is a small cove located on the northwest coast of Sal, accessible by a dirt road or a guided tour. It is not your typical sandy beach, but it is a unique beach with calm and clear water, and lemon sharks can often swim near the shore. Visitors can choose to swim and snorkel with the sharks with the guidance of experienced local guides. The experience is highly regulated to ensure the safety of both visitors and the sharks.

In addition to swimming with sharks, Shark Bay is also a great spot for snorkeling and diving. The cove is home to various marine life, including colorful fish, sea turtles, and rays. Visitors can also take a boat tour to explore nearby caves and rock formations.

Murdeira Beach

This is a small, quiet pebble beach located in a protected bay. The calm and clear water makes it perfect for swimming and snorkeling. There are also some great hiking trails nearby too.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

tui tours sal

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

tui tours sal

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

tui tours sal

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

tui tours sal

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

tui tours sal

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

tui tours sal

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

tui tours sal

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Childish Gambino, aka Donald Glover, going on 'New World Tour,' including Milwaukee stop

tui tours sal

Grammy-winning rapper and singer Childish Gambino — also known as actor, writer and director Donald Glover — has been teasing a summer tour.

On Monday, he made it official — and it includes a Milwaukee stop.

Gambino's "The New World Tour" — which will take him across North America, Europe and Australia — will include a Fiserv Forum show on Aug. 14 with special guest Willow, singer-songwriter and daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.

The tour announcement came after Gambino surprise-dropped his latest album "Atavista" early Monday morning, the finished version of an album previously known as "3.15.20" that came out in 2020, while also saying on X (formerly Twitter) that an all-new Childish Gambino album will come out this summer. On Monday, Gambino also released a new music video for "Little Foot Big Foot" directed by frequent collaborator Hiro Murai.

The Milwaukee show will be the first Childish Gambino concert in Milwaukee in a decade, following a 2014 show at the Rave's Eagles Ballroom. (Although Glover hasn't completely forgotten about Milwaukee, or that venue; the Rave got a mention in an episode of "Atlanta" in 2022. )

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Since that concert, Glover's become a sensation in multiple fields — from his acclaimed Emmy-winning FX series "Atlanta," which he created, wrote for and starred in; to co-creating the Amazon series "Swarm"; to starring roles in "The Lion King," "Solo: A Star Wars Story" and, most recently, Prime Video series "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"; to winning five Grammys, including song and record of the year for "This Is America" in 2019.

Tickets for Gambino's Milwaukee concert go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at the box office (1111 N. Phillips Ave.) and fiservforum.com . Fans can sign up for presale access at thenewworldtour.com , and American Express card members can purchase tickets early beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Prices have yet to be announced.

Olivia Rodrigo Adds Asia and Australia Legs to Guts World Tour

Olivia Rodrigo at the 2022 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Red Carpet held at the Microsoft Theatre on November 5, 2022 in Los Angeles, California.

Olivia Rodrigo will tour Asia and Australia for the first time in her career, the singer announced Wednesday. Rodrigo has added nine international dates to her massive “ Guts ” world tour for a total of 82 shows globally.

The new dates kick off Sept. 16 in Bangkok, Thailand and continue through Seoul, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, Melbourne, and Sydney, wrapping up on Oct. 19 at Qudos Bank Arena. Additional dates may be added as Rodrigo wrote on social media, “Stay tuned, Manila!” Fans in the comment sections of her social posts are eager to hear when and if Rodrigo will also be adding Latin American dates to the trek but that has yet to be confirmed.

Popular on Variety

The “Guts” tour has since made stops in New York, Houston and Dublin, and will make its way towards London in the coming weeks. It will conclude on Oct. 18 in Sydney.

Tickets for the newly added Asia and Australia dates will be available starting with the American Express presale in select markets.

Rodrigo performed “Vampire” and “Get Him Back!” at MTV’s Video Music Awards on Tuesday night, following Lil Wayne as the second performer of the evening. It was her second-ever appearance at the show as Rodrigo made her VMAs debut in 2021 when she performed her Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Good 4 U.”

“Guts” was released to high acclaim on Sept. 8 via Geffen Records and was preceded by two top 10 singles, “Vampire” and “Bad Idea Right?” “Vampire” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking Rodrigo the youngest artist to debut three No. 1 hits on the chart behind “Drivers License” and “Good 4 U.”

In an interview with Capital FM in England , Rodrigo said she wrote much of the songs on “Guts” with the concept of an accompanying tour “in mind.”

“I think there’s a lot of fun songs,” she said. “I wrote the album with a tour in mind, so I think they’re all songs I wanted people to be able to scream in a crowd. Hopefully, that’s what’s achieved.” A similar teaser — in the form of a faux ticket advertising “Olivia Rodrigo: Guts The World Tour” — appeared in a lyric video for “Making the Bed,” the sixth track off “Guts.”

Rodrigo last toured North America and Europe in support of her debut album “Sour” in 2022. It started on April 5 in Portland and ended on July 7 in London. Gracie Abrams, Holly Humberstone, Chappell Roan and Baby Queen served as opening acts.
