You Can See Immersive Van Gogh Digital Art Shows in Over 40 U.S. Cities

“Immersive Van Gogh” runs in Chicago through February 14, 2022.

Over the past few years, immersive digital art museums have drawn crowds everywhere from Tokyo to Paris to Bordeaux . (There was even a drive-in exhibit in Toronto last year.) Now, people in the United States finally get to enjoy this 360-degree experience set to music with not one, but five traveling shows featuring the work of Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. While each of the shows is distinct, they are similar in that they place visitors in the middle of large-scale moving images that are projected onto the walls, ceilings, and floors in a large gallery or warehouse space.

Find out more about where each show is happening, how they differ (slightly), and how to get tickets:

1. Immersive Van Gogh

Created and run by one of the directors behind the Van Gogh show at Atelier des Lumières in Paris (aka the digital art show featured in Netflix’s Emily in Paris ), Immersive Van Gogh features more than 500,000 cubic feet of projections and lasts one hour. Expect to see iconic van Gogh works, including The Potato Eaters (1885), Starry Night (1889), Sunflowers (1888), and The Bedroom (1889). The large-scale digital animations of the Dutch painter’s work are set to original songs composed by Italian multimedia composer Luca Longobardi.

The show is currently open in 15 U.S. cities, with upcoming events in several other U.S. cities in early 2022. In a review in the Chicago Tribune , arts reporter Steve Johnson likened it to an “updated version” of those 1970s Pink Floyd laser light shows at a planetarium.

“But instead of the borderline skeezy rock culture undertones of a Floyd show, making it about an artist . . . puts a veneer of high culture on the whole thing,” Johnson wrote. “Tonight’s head trip is being sponsored by your college’s core curriculum requirement in humanities and the arts.”

Tickets are sold by timed entry and are going quickly. Social distancing circles are projected on the floor of the gallery to give guests their own space during their visit.

This digital art show features similar van Gogh masterpieces set to music, and it takes about 60 to 75 minutes to experience in full. VIP Access also enables visitors to add a virtual reality component of the exhibition, a 10-minute journey through a day in van Gogh’s life that places you in the center of his most personal paintings. (Equipment will be disinfected after each use.)

Van Gogh exhibitions in 2023: we reveal the hot tickets coming up worldwide

Highlight shows in chicago, paris and amsterdam—plus a 50th birthday celebration for the van gogh museum.

van gogh alive tour schedule 2022 europe

Adventures with Van Gogh is a weekly blog by Martin Bailey, our long-standing correspondent and expert on the artist. Published every Friday, his stories range from newsy items about this most intriguing artist to scholarly pieces based on his own meticulous investigations and discoveries. © Martin Bailey

Ambitious exhibitions of Vincent’s work are planned for next year, including three at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The museum opened in June 1973, so it promises to mark the 50th anniversary year with a flourish. Its two major shows are being organised in conjunction with the Art Institute of Chicago and the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.

What is particularly exciting about the 2023 global exhibition programme is that the shows will break new ground, rather than simply offering Van Gogh’s greatest hits. We run through the 2023 treats in store.

Klimt: Inspired by Van Gogh, Rodin, Matisse is about to open at Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum (7 October-8 January 2023)—and next year it will go on to Vienna, to the Belvedere (3 February-29 May 2023). Based on fresh research, it sets out to examine the impact of slightly earlier avant-garde masters on Gustav Klimt. These include Van Gogh, who will be represented at the Belvedere by five oil paintings, along with 15 Klimts (plus works on paper and paintings by other artists). The show is curated by Markus Fellinger (Belvedere), Edwin Becker and Renske Suijver (both from the Van Gogh Museum).

Choosing Vincent: From Family Inheritance to World-Famous Collection (10 February-10 April 2023) tells what the Van Gogh Museum calls “a personal story of doubt, setbacks, pride, and triumph”. Vincent failed dismally to sell his work, so most of his paintings were bequeathed to his brother Theo. Tragically, Theo died six months later, and the task of caring for the collection then passed to his widow Jo Bonger and their son, also named Vincent. It was the artist’s nephew Vincent who helped establish the Van Gogh Museum. Centred around paintings in the museum’s collection, the show is curated by Lisa Smit.

Van Gogh, Cezanne, Le Fauconnier & the Bergen School (29 April-3 September 2023) focuses on the painters who worked in the artists' colony in the Dutch village of Bergen in around 1914. The show looks at the influence of Van Gogh, Cezanne and the French Cubist Henri Le Fauconnier on the Bergen painters. To be presented at the Stedelijk Museum in Alkmaar, which is just north of Amsterdam, it will include six Van Gogh paintings lent by other Dutch museums. The lead curator is Alkmaar’s Marjan van Heteren.

Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise: His Final Months will first be presented at the Van Gogh Museum (12 May-3 September 2023) and then at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris (3 October 2023-28 January 2024). The artist came to Auvers, a village just north of Paris, arriving from the asylum in Provence. During his 70 days, he completed 70 paintings, an astonishing achievement. Tragedy then struck. Vincent shot himself while in the wheatfields—it was certainly suicide, not murder . The exhibition will also explore his rise to fame. With around 50 Van Gogh paintings, it is curated by Nienke Bakker (Van Gogh Museum) and Emmanuel Coquery (Musée d’Orsay).

Van Gogh and the Avant-Garde: Along the Seine will open at the Art Institute of Chicago (14 May–4 September 2023) and then go to the Van Gogh Museum (13 October 2023-14 January 2024). It examines the impact of the Post-Impressionist artists who flocked in the 1880s to Asnières, in the northern suburbs of Paris, on the River Seine. Along with Van Gogh, they included Georges Seurat, Paul Signac and Emile Bernard, who experimented with colour and the application of paint. With around 20 Van Gogh paintings, the show is curated by Jacquelyn Coutré (Art Institute of Chicago) and Bregje Gerritse (Van Gogh Museum).

Assen (Netherlands), September

Van Gogh’s Head of a Woman (October 1883)

© Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo

Van Gogh in Drenthe at the Drents Museum, Assen (11 September 2023-7 January 2024) will be the first exhibition devoted to what has been the most neglected period of Van Gogh’s career, the two months in the autumn of 1883 which he spent in the remote province of Drenthe, in the north of the Netherlands. The hard life in the peat bogs made him even more steadfast in his goal: to become a painter of peasants. Van Gogh found work difficult, and only five oil paintings and 17 drawings and watercolours from Drenthe survive. The Drents Museum curator, Annemiek Rens, set out to borrow all these works—although a few are not available, most will be coming. A visit to the museum, in the provincial capital of Assen, will also offer an opportunity to explore the nearby sites where Van Gogh worked.

For this current year, Van Gogh in America , at the Detroit of Institute of Arts, will open on 2 October and run until 22 January 2023. This major show will examine how the artist eventually achieved fame in the US.

A newly announced exhibition in Rome will also run into next year. Van Gogh: Masterpieces from the Kröller-Müller Museum will be at the Palazzo Bonaparte (8 October-26 March 2023). There will be 50 paintings and works on paper coming from the museum in Otterlo.

And looking further ahead beyond next year, London’s National Gallery will be holding a Van Gogh extravaganza in 2024-25, focussing on his greatest period, in Provence: Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers .

The site in Rue Daubigny was discovered two years ago by Van Gogh specialist Wouter van der Veen, casting a fresh light on the artist’s final day. Bookable tours on this private land have just been announced, for 25-30 September and 18-22 October.

Stunning exhibition of one of my favourite artists that reduces me to tears in under two minutes, just so moving and so sad the dichotomy of so much colour produced by such a tortured soul. I must for ALL to experience when in London!!

Absolutely amazing I’ve never been to anything like it. I came away awestruck ❤️

Van Gogh Alive at MediaCityUK

van gogh alive tour schedule 2022 europe

Van Gogh Alive at MediaCity and Salford Quays , Manchester 22 October 2021 — 27 February 2022 Tickets from £16.50 — Book now

This autumn, MediaCityUK welcomes Van Gogh Alive , an immersive, multi-sensory experience that elevates the Dutch master’s work to new heights with the help of modern technology.

You may already know (and love) the luscious brushwork of Vincent van Gogh, but it isn’t very often that you have the opportunity to quite literally step inside of his paintings . This is exactly the kind of unforgettable experience that MediaCityUK is offering to visitors through Van Gogh Alive .

The event is an immersive installation of the artist’s work, with high definition projections of Van Gogh’s paintings displayed using innovative SENSORY 4 technology on a large scale, in the MediaCityUK’s Piazza. Ablaze with vibrant hues, combining multi-channel motion graphics, cinema quality surround sound with a classical score and an array of projectors, the technology works to create a memorable experience for the whole family. Running for three months following displays in London and Birmingham, the show has now landed in the North West to delight new audiences.

Born in the Netherlands in the mid-19th century, Vincent van Gogh was a Post-Impressionist painter whose style is characterised by the unrestrained use of impasto paint and an impeccable eye for colour. Despite being relatively unknown throughout his life, he became one of the most influential figures in Western art history thanks to his ability to perceive the everyday as exquisite. His subjects were often landscapes he admired, people he encountered and scenes from daily life. In the hands of the Dutch master painter, even the most mundane of subjects would become a meditation on finding beauty where we would least expect it.

Entertaining for older and younger audiences alike, the installation doesn’t just show disparate images but brings visitors closer to Vincent van Gogh’s life story and his periods of creative development that eventually resulted in one of the most recognisable artistic styles in modern art history. The digital display includes the most iconic of works like Starry Night and Sunflowers , as well as the lesser-known pieces.

Van Gogh Alive is a chance to experience the painter’s work from a unique perspective and see them in greater detail than ever before. Somewhat mirroring his vibrant world and the frenzied manner in which he created his work, the show creates the perfect opportunity to get lost in the colour and temporarily escape from the autumn rain.
