Jason, our guide spoke several languages and was very informative. We went to all of the places listed in the tour description. We were in a small group of 8 people. • A8614BDalisons 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good Bus Tour The bus ride itself was great for what we paid for. We were pleased with the locations we visited and the scenic views along the way. And it was very convenient to have the consistent transportation. The tour guide told us some facts, but it was mostly a quiet bus ride if that is what you are looking for. In October the Gondola in Whistler is closed so we were sad we did not get to do that, instead we spent 3 hours roaming the village, which is very nice. However, we did get to do the sea to sky gondola in Squamish instead which was absolutely amazing. For all 4 of us the cost about $300 in total, so I would suggest you keep that in mind. We also only got 1 hour in Squamish, and would have preferred a bit longer to do the trails given the price. It would have been more ideal to have more time in Squamish and less in Whistler if we could choose. One thing that surprised us was the lack of professionalism from the tour guide. The tour guide informed us that a $15 dollar tip per person was mandatory. He did not tell us this until we were getting on the bus from our last stop at the end of the day. And then before we got off the bus, he came to the back where we were sitting and asked us again for it in front of everyone before he took us to our drop off spot and demanded it before he drove further. We advised him that we would be happy to tip and we did plan on doing so but that if it was mandatory it should have been included in the overall cost or at least advertised with the tour before booking. He was very persistent that we provide it, as he asked several times towards the end which made us feel very uncomfortable and we ended up getting off a spot further from our hotel. Other than the above hiccup, my friends and enjoyed the tour very much and thought it was a great way to tour these beautiful locations in BC. Read more Written October 10, 2023
  • Tennie O 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Probably OK if you speak Chinese and don’t want to experience the local dining or spend time in historic Victoria I cannot recommend this tour at all. The itinerary for the trip was terrible and made no sense. It was a complete rip off for US$150 per person for 5 people. We arrived for pickup at 7AM and then spent well over 1.5 hours doing other pickups before heading to the ferry. This created a time crunch, so the driver was driving dangerously - going too fast and running through stop signs. The first stop after the ferry, Butchart Gardens, was lovely and the amount of time there was reasonable. We then drove to suburbia for lunch in the basement of a motel adjacent to a strip mall liquor store with no other reasonable options nearby other than fast food along a busy highway. After lunch, we drove through Chinatown, which we only saw through the bus windows. Why did we not eat here?! We also just drove through the harbor area to the mile zero marker, where stopped for a very quick photo op. We then drove back to the harbor area, but now only had 35-40 mins to get off the bus and explore. It would have been so much more efficient and enjoyable if we had gone straight to Chinatown after the gardens. Then we would have had 2-3 hours to actually eat a good meal and slowly wander from there to the harbor while exploring the area. Our driver/guide, Daniel, was kind and accommodating, but predominantly spoke in Mandarin and his English was not clear. This was advertised as a tour in English. Chinese was not even listed on the page we purchased from. What he did tell us in English, that I could understand, was mostly observational versus factual or historical. For example, pointing out schools and parks or reading signs of businesses (in English) as we passed. Read more Written October 9, 2023

Location: Yellowknife, the capital city of Canada's Northwest Territories, is a beacon for those in search of the surreal beauty of the Northern Lights. Located just over 400 kilometers (248 miles) south of the Arctic Circle, this northern city experiences some of the most extreme weather conditions, from long, harsh winters to short, hot summers. But it's the winter nights that are the main attraction for many, as they play host to the stunning spectacle of the aurora borealis.

Climate: Due to its northern location, Yellowknife sees high levels of geomagnetic activity, which leads to the creation of the vibrant colors associated with the Northern Lights. The weather conditions in the region are relatively stable during the winter, with little precipitation or wind, and low humidity, which means clear skies that are perfect for aurora viewing.

Late November to early April

These are considered the best months for Northern Lights viewing in the Northwest Territories. During this period, the nights are long and dark, providing the perfect canvas for the vibrant colors of the aurora.

December to February

The heart of winter brings the longest and darkest nights of the year, increasing chances of seeing the Northern Lights. However, the weather can be quite cold, so visitors should be prepared for sub-zero temperatures.

Known as Aurora month, March often sees increased solar activity, leading to more frequent and intense displays of the Northern Lights. Plus, the weather begins to warm up slightly.

Early August to mid October

The fall months also offer fantastic Aurora viewing opportunities. When the nights become dark again after the Midnight Sun of summer, the Northern Lights become visible. Different activities are available in the fall (hiking, for example) than in the winter as it is before the snow arrives.

Factors affecting the visibility of Northern Lights

The visibility of the Northern Lights is largely dependent on weather and climate conditions (2). Here are some important factors:

  Cloud Cover

Clear, cloudless skies are crucial for viewing the Northern Lights. If the sky is overcast, it may be difficult to see the Northern Lights.

Light Pollution

Dark skies are essential for Northern Lights viewing. The darker the environment, the more vivid the lights appear. Therefore, it is often recommended to go outside city limits, away from artificial lighting, for the best views.

Solar Activity

The intensity and frequency of the Northern Lights are influenced by solar activity. Increased solar activity often leads to more spectacular auroral displays.

The recommended duration of stay in Yellowknife for Northern Lights viewing is at least three to four nights . This gives visitors a higher chance of witnessing the spectacle, considering that weather and solar conditions can be unpredictable. It also allows enough time to explore other attractions and activities in and around Yellowknife.

Yellowknifers say goodbye to this year's snow castle

Friday was the last day of the snowking's winter festival in n.w.t..

People flocked to Yellowknife's snow castle on Friday afternoon on the last day of the Snowking's Winter Festival.

"It's always a sad day when the castle closes, but this has been a good year," said Tim Laity, who volunteers at the festival leading tours, and was there on Friday with his kids and grandkids.

"Having a month-long winter festival in a winter city is a good thing."

The final evening event of the festival will be Friday night, and on Saturday, the crew will begin to dismantle the castle.

They are aiming to have the stage area, including the rafters overhead, dismantled by Monday so an excavator can come and "start breaking things," said "Snowking" Anthony Foliot.
