The Italian Rivera Seaside Town Near the French Border

Ventimiglia is a town on the northwest part of the Italian Riviera on Italy's west coast . It's the last town before the French border, 7 kilometers away. The modern town runs along the sea while the old town is on a hill on the other side of the Roja River. It is a less expensive and good alternative to other towns along the Italian Riviera such as Sanremo. 

Since Ventimiglia is on the main rail line between Genoa and France, it makes a good base for visiting the northwestern part of the Italian Riviera and Liguria, the French Riviera, and glitzy Montecarlo. Ventimiglia's attractions include the archaeological site with remains of a Roman theater and baths, the medieval hill town, the huge Friday outdoor food and flea market, Hanbury Gardens, prehistoric caves, and of course the beach and seaside promenade.

Where to Stay

We stayed at Suitehotel Kaly, on the seaside promenade directly across from the sea and a rocky beach where you can swim. From our balcony, the view of the sea and Menton, France, beyond was fabulous (be sure to book a sea view room).

It's a comfortable 3-star hotel near several seaside restaurants and bars. It's a short walk to the downtown area and the old town. By the sea below the old town is the 3-star Sole Mare Hotel and restaurant. Up the hill in the old town is La Terrazza de' Pelargoni B&B.

The Old Town of Ventimiglia Alta

Perched on a hill across the river from the new town is the old medieval town called Ventimiglia Alta, enclosed by walls. This area is primarily pedestrian as most of the old streets are too narrow for cars. There are parking lots below near the sea and one up the hill near the cathedral but the best way to reach it is by walking from the modern town.

From the public park near the seaside promenade in the modern area, cross the river to enter the old town through one of the remaining gates in the wall and walk up the hill toward the cathedral. Note the colorful houses and the tiny walkways off both sides of the main street.

Visit the Romanesque cathedral and 11th-century baptistery. Be sure to go downstairs when you're inside to visit the crypt and remains of the old baptistery underground. The cathedral is built on the site of an older Lombard church on what may have been the site of a Roman temple.

As you walk further up the main street, be sure to stop in to take a look at the fascinating Oratorio de' ​Neri. Also on this part of the street are several small shops and bars. At the top of the hill is the 10th century Church of San Michele Archangel built on the site of a Pagan temple.

Roman Archaeological Sites

Roman remains in Ventimiglia include a Roman theater, buildings, tombs, and parts of the ancient city wall. The Roman theater is usually only open on weekends. Roman finds from the area, such as statues, tombstones, oil lamps, and ceramics, are housed in the Girolamo Rossi Archaeological Museum in Forte dell'Annunziata on Via Verdi.

Outside Town - Hanbury Gardens and Balzi Rossi Prehistoric Caves

The extensive botanical gardens, Italy's largest, surrounding the former villa of Sir Thomas Hanbury are built on a slope extending almost to the sea. Hanbury Gardens are a few kilometers outside town, reached by car, bus, or taxi.

Remains from a Cro-Magnon family, fossils, stone tools, and other Paleolithic artifacts were found in the caves of Balzi Rossi. Some of the caves can also be visited. Balzi Rossi is 7 kilometers from Ventimiglia, just before the French border.

Places to Visit Nearby

Both the Italian Riviera town of Sanremo and the French town of Menton are a very short train ride away. Other Italian seaside towns, Monaco, and Nice (France) can also be reached by train. If you have a car, you can explore the interesting interior mountain towns and picturesque perched villages.

It also couldn’t be more convenient. It takes about two hours to drive to Ventimiglia from Genoa, or two and a half hours on the train. If you go by car, here’s a tip: Keep your eye out for road signs that say “x.x. miglia”—that means “Ventimiglia”!

The name “Ventimiglia” doesn’t come from what you think.

Thought the name came from the phrase for “20 miles” ( venti miglia ) in Italian? We did, too. But nope. Turns out, the name derives from ancient Ligurian dialect “Albium Intemelium”, meaning capital city of the Intemelii (Ligurian coast).

The Roia River divides Ventimiglia into two sections: new and old. City walls encircle the old part of the city, which, because it’s up on a hill, is called Ventimiglia Alta. So if you want to see some of the town’s most historic gems—including ancient ruins and churches dating back to the 10th century—then you have to go… up! Bonus: You also get picture-perfect views of the Ligurian sea.

Friday in Ventimiglia means shopping… on the beautiful boardwalk.

Shopaholics, rejoice: In Ventimiglia, not only do you have an open-air market, but it’s in the most picturesque spot possible—on the extensive  lungomare  (boardwalk). On Friday, the boardwalk is lined with open-air stands offering deals on handmade clothing, leather goods, furniture, produce, freshly caught fish, Italian food specialities, wine, and, of course, flowers.

Can’t make it on Friday? Not a problem! Many of the same products can be found at a more limited market along the same promenade every day of the week except Sunday.

Want to hit the beach? Ventimiglia offers two breathtaking beaches right near the city center. The  Spiaggia dei Balzi Rossi (“Beach of the Red Jumps”), surrounded by red cliffs and wild plants and flowers, is actually part of an archaeological site. Definitely not your typical beach! For a more traditional alternative,  Spiaggia delle Calandre  is ideal for long walks… and, of course, admiring (or enjoying) the turquoise water. Don’t forget your board, since surf’s up on breezy days!

Ventimiglia is home to one of the most important libraries in Italy…

It’s not all beaches and promenades in Ventimiglia. The medieval town also is home to the Biblioteca Civica Aprosiana. A must-see for any bibliophile, this huge public library, founded by the writer and Augustan monk Angelico Aprosio in 1648, is one of the oldest in Italy. And it houses the country’s 2nd-largest collection of manuscripts and books from the 17th century.

And, just like Ventimiglia, the library is divided in two! The historic collection is in Ventimiglia Alta. A more modern collection can be found in the city center. Best of all, both are open to the public every day of the week except Sunday.

Located about fifteen minutes from Ventimiglia, this castle has been standing since 1177. Sometimes referred to as Castello di Doria, after the royal family it belonged to, the castle and its tiny village is so picturesque, it inspired the famous Impressionist painter Claude Monet. Two of his masterpieces feature the scene!

If you’ve ever wanted to be bombarded with flowers, now’s your chance.

Local flower-lovers prepare year-round for the  Battaglia di Fiori,  or Battle of the Flowers, held every June. After all, Ventimiglia is located on the  Riviera dei Fiori  (Riviera of Flowers)! The main attraction of the two-day event is the fabulous, themed parade, filled with lavish floats and dancers. Want to watch? Be prepared to be bombarded with flowers of all different colors. (And know that you’re in good company, since past participants have included Alfred Hitchcock and Cary Grant!).

Not going to be there for the festival? You can still get your fill of flowers. Head to Hanbury Gardens, just a short drive from Ventimiglia’s city center. Founded by Sir Thomas Hanbury in the late 1800s, it boasts 2,500 types of Mediterranean plants and flowers—plus a breathtaking view.

As we’ve said time and time again, food in Italy is extremely regional. So it’s no surprise that the cuisine of Ventimiglia is unique!

Local specialties include ba rbagiuai, a crispy butternut squash and cheese ravioli. In a twist on the usual way ravioli is served, barbagiuai  can be eaten either hot or cold. Piscialandrea , a deep-dish focaccia topped with tomato sauce, anchovies, olive and garlic, makes for a flavorful midday snack.

If you’re looking for seafood, of course, there’s no end of options; many dishes served in Ventimiglia include fresh-caught fish.

Ventimiglia is located right on the coastal border between France and Italy, in the extreme Western Liguria . Like the entire Riviera of Flowers Ventimiglia enjoys in a very favorable climate every day of the year.

The proximity to the border and to the Principality of Monaco make Ventimiglia an extremely lively and commercial city where the inhabitants of the Alps are assiduous frequenters of the markets and shops of the city.

Behind Ventimiglia there are two valleys rich in medieval villages : Val Roya and Val Nervia.

Those unfamiliar with Ventimiglia would never expect this city to have so many points of interest to visit. Just take a look and choose, there really is something for everyone: for lovers of history, culture, nature or shopping.

The Caves of the Balzi Rossi

Near the border between Italy and France, in the suggestive coastal stretch of the hamlet of Grimaldi, there is one of the most important Paleolithic sites in Europe, the caves of Balzi Rossi with the attached prehistoric museum.

In the caves, which owe their name to the red color of the rocky walls, the remains of prehistoric burials of the cro-magnon man were found, but also animal remains belonging to very interesting species, such as the rhinoceros, the ancient elephant and the hippo.

Inside the museum you can also admire objects from the daily life of primitive man such as blades, arrowheads, stone statuettes and engravings.

The Theater and the Roman City

The Roman city of Albintimilium was founded at the beginning of the 2nd century BC and had an important role as an Italic center before the western provinces of the empire.

Today it is possible to see the walls in which the doors equipped with circular towers open and the theater, which dates back to the end of the second century AD. The Ancient Roman Theater is still used today for shows and entertainment.

It is also possible to see the remains of the thermal plant and its floor mosaics, the urban districts and some private villas, the domus.

Ventimiglia Alta

It is one of the most important historical centers of Liguria which, like an extraordinary and fascinating open-air museum, preserves almost 10 centuries of the city’s history.

From the 8th century AD, with the arrival of the Lombards, the population abandoned the Roman city and the inhabited center was moved to the highest and most protected hill beyond the Roja river.

The upper town remained the center of Ventimiglia’s life until 1800, when the arrival of the railway favored the development of the city as we know it today.

Inside its walls and among its alleys there are churches, oratories, convents, noble palaces and an exceptional artistic heritage.

The best way to visit the city is to choose one of the streets that from the river level lead, between short climbs and steep stairs, to the top of the hill: in this way you will fully experience the labyrinthine sense of the urban fabric, marked by ups and downs, vaulted passages, dark corners and sudden bright squares.

Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta

The cathedral of Ventimiglia is considered one of the best examples of the Romanesque architecture of Liguria. It rises above the remains of an ancient medieval church whose crypt can still be seen today.

The three-nave structure dates back to the 11th century. The apses and the extraordinary portal of the facade, built with the stone of the turbie, date back to the end of the 12th century. The interior of the cathedral, of great charm and suggestion, preserves very interesting paintings.

Next to the cathedral there is also the Romanesque octagonal baptistery dedicated to San Giovanni, perfectly preserved but not its original forms.

Church of San Michele

The church of San Michele was built in the 10th century by the Counts of Ventimiglia: despite the troubled history, marked by collapses, destructions and renovations, the interior still retains its cozy medieval atmosphere.

One of the peculiarities of the church is that some Roman columns dating back to the Emperor Caracalla have been reused. Just two of them are placed at the entrance of the church as a holy water font.

Aprosiana Library

The Aprosiana Library was founded in 1648 by Father Angelico Aprosio from Ventimiglia. It was the first public library in Liguria and today it is located in via Garibaldi in the historic center of Ventimiglia Alta.

The original collection, of which about 7000 volumes are preserved, constitutes one of the most important Baroque nuclei in Italy with very rare editions of considerable value.

In the same venue are also exhibited 9 large canvases, including the portrait of the astronomer Gian Domenico Cassini, a native of Perinaldo, called in 1669 to the court of Louis, the fourteenth king of France where he spent the rest of his life.

The Hanbury Gardens

The Hanbury Gardens they represent the most famous acclimatization garden of the Riviera and one of the most important in Europe.

Thanks to the favorable climatic and natural position of Punta Mortola, the surface of this extraordinary park of 18,000 hectares and its interior coexist with exotic plants from all over the world and examples of Mediterranean flora.

The result is a grandiose ensemble that harmonizes with the villa, the other buildings and the ornamental elements such as fountains, stairways, benches and pergolas and the terracing sloping down to the sea.

The Fort of the Annunziata

The Annunziata fort is a fortress overlooking the sea with phenomenal views of the French Riviera and beaches as far as Bordighera.

Today it is a museum named after Gerolamo Rossi, famous for his archaeological research: it was in fact he who discovered the Roman theater of Albintimilium.

Indeed, it is in these very halls that one can see pottery from the Roman period and glassware from Albintimilium: perfume bottles, glasses, cups, and spice aroma bottles.

In addition to Roman artifacts, there are documents related to the fortress, a collection of prehistoric terracotta figurines, and sculptures collected by Thomas Hanbury in the late 1800s.

Porta Canarda

Porta Canarda is a fine example of a medieval fortification built in the 13th century.

It was one of the 8 medieval defense and access gates to the city of Ventimiglia.

This historic monument is ideal to visit for those who want to savor a testimony of Ventimiglia’s past, not to mention that you can enjoy an incredible view of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Ventimiglia Market

The covered market of Ventimiglia originated in 1922 as a flower market. It was the first construction in Europe for the marketing of cut flowers.

Today the Ventimiglia covered market is very famous, in Italy and in neighboring France, for the variety and quality of its products: fruit and vegetables, cold cuts and cheeses, typical gastronomic products and of course flowers and plants.

Oasis of Nervia

On the eastern border of Ventimiglia there is the Oasis of Nervia, an important wildlife oasis managed by the WWF of about 6 hectares.

This magical place can be easily reached from the Ventimiglia seafront or following the cycle / pedestrian bridge that connects the city to that of Camporosso.

Here you can observe birds in their natural environment and relax for a moment while taking the new cycle path that connects Bordighera , Ventimiglia and Dolceacqua .

Protected Marine Area of Capo Mortola

The Marine Protected Area of Capo Mortola is a natural park between Italy and France with a surprising natural environment.

This marine area is located right in the sea area where the Hanbury gardens overlook. This area is of considerable geological and paleontological interest. In fact, there are important fossil deposits and its seabed rich in shallows is extremely precious to guarantee an incredible marine biodiversity.

During a dive you can admire the rocky and sandy bottoms rich in sponges, gorgonians, molluscs and extraordinary fish. At a depth of 36 meters, a fresh water spring hides in a crack in the rocks, inside a mysterious underwater cave.

What to eat in Ventimiglia

There Pisciadella it is part of the large family of pizzas and focaccias. But woe to call it pizza or red focaccia: pisciadela is the result of an ancient tradition of Ventimiglia that has been handed down from generation to generation.

This dish, similar to the Sardenaira di Bordighera, is a focaccia with a rich tomato sauce prepared with onions and extra virgin olive oil, garnished with garlic, olives, anchovies, capers and a sprinkling of oregano.

In the past, the Pisciadela was prepared daily by all the families and cooked in the common wood-burning ovens: each hamlet had one and some are still in existence. He was always present during village festivals and workers’ packed lunches.

Today pisciadela can be found in all the best bakeries and typical restaurants in the city.

La Pisciadela is part of the Deco of the city. The quality certification that attests its provenance and origin.

There Castagnola it is a dessert of nineteenth-century origin that originated from the imagination of Popular Cuisine: it was born to replace and imitate the most refined marron glacé that only the richest families could afford.

Despite the name it does not contain chestnuts or chestnut flour.

The name derives only from the shape of the color reminiscent of the chestnut.

The dough of this traditional dessert contains cocoa, chocolate, coffee and various spices such as cinnamon, cloves and orange flower water. In the original recipe there are no animal or vegetable fats.

Many of the restaurants in Ventimiglia can easily be considered among the best in Liguria. Surely fish cuisine is the predominant one.

However, there are some small, lesser-known specialties that are steeped in the history of tradition. Now here are some tips for you:

• Brandacujun: a cream of stockfish creamed with potatoes, garlic, parsley and extra virgin olive oil;
• La Turta de Lurè: typical local dessert that recalls panettone and is consumed at Christmas, Easter and the most important holidays;
• U Bernardu: a sweet that was once very popular and is a sweet bread with polenta that dates back to the sixteenth century;
• U Buiabasciu: an extraordinary local fish soup.

Events in Ventimiglia

The Battle of Flowers

The battle of flowers is a parade of flowered floats that takes place annually in Ventimiglia in the second half of June.

The first editions date back to the beginning of the twentieth century and were held to celebrate the carnival or the beginning of Spring.

Each edition is attended by an average of ten wagons set up by as many wagon companies who compete to create the most spectacular flowery wagon. Each edition has a theme to be inspired by when designing the wagon.

Medieval August

Every year during medieval August Ventimiglia plunges into its past and dresses up with an extraordinary medieval atmosphere.

You will meet soldiers, ladies, Knights who parade through the city and compete in the alleys and squares of the historic center. The background is painted with brightly colored flags, drum rolls and trumpet blasts.

Naturally, there is no lack of food and wine corners, markets and guided tours of historic sites.

Among the most awaited moments of medieval August there is the historical procession and the regatta of the sestieri: a maritime Palio in which six of the six districts of Ventimiglia compete in a regatta of Ligurian goiters.

San Secondo

The patronal feast of San Secondo, which takes place every year on August 26, is a very heartfelt moment for the people of Ventimiglia.

The winner of the city prize, the “San Segundin D’Argentu” is proclaimed, mass is celebrated and the procession takes place in the historic center.

In the evening it is an explosion of colors with fireworks on the waterfront accompanied by background music.

How to get to Ventimiglia

The easiest way to reach Ventimglgia is by car with the A10 Genoa-Ventimiglia motorway . After the exit, at the Ventimiglia toll booth, there is a road with several lanes that leads right into the center.

It is also very easy to get to Ventimiglia by train : all trains from Milan, Genoa and France stop at the city’s station.

The airport the closest is Nice and, by car, without traffic, it is just 40 minutes away. To reach the airport, city taxis (cheaper than French ones) and taxi services are recommended car rental with driver , extremely professional.

Ventimiglia , an Italian Riviera town, is just across the border from France making it a convenient place to stop when entering or leaving Italy. Ventimiglia’s attractions include the archaeological site with remains of a Roman theater and baths, the medieval hill town, Hanbury Gardens, prehistoric caves, and of course the beach and seaside promenade.

It’s just across from a sandy beach and the small tourist harbor and by the tunnel from where you can access the elevator to go up into the old town. Getting There: Ventimiglia is on the main rail line between Genoa and France and the station is right in town. It’s the last town before the French border, 7 kilometers away. If you’re arriving by car, it’s just off the A10 autostrada and there’s free parking along the sea and in town. Since it’s less expensive than some nearby towns, it makes a good base for visiting the northwestern part of the Italian Riviera and Liguria, the French Riviera, and Montecarlo. Top Things to See and Do in Ventimiglia

The modern town runs along the sea while the medieval town, Ventimiglia Alta, is on a hill above the Roja River across from the modern town. It can be accessed by climbing the hill or using the elevator inside the tunnel. Most of the modern town and beaches are to the left of the river when you’re facing the sea although there’s a small tourist harbor and beach area on the other side of the river below the old town.

Ventimiglia Alta highlights:

• The old town is enclosed by walls and is primarily pedestrian. Enter by foot through one of the remaining gates and walk up the hill toward the cathedral or use the elevator inside the tunnel. As you walk up, you’ll see colorful houses, narrow alleys, chapels, and small squares along the way. There are a few shops and bars near the top.
• Cathedral and Baptistery: The Romanesque cathedral and octagonal baptistery date from the 11th century, In the crypt below the cathedral are remains of an older Lombard church.
• Church of San Michele Archangel :This 10th century church at the top of the hill was built on the site of a Pagan temple. Some Roman columns are incorporated into the church.
• Oratorio de’ ​Neri: Built in 1650 by the Confraternity of the Misericordia, the beautiful oratory was restored in 2011.

In the modern town:

• Roman remains: A 2nd century Roman theater, floor mosaics, remains of houses, and parts of the ancient city wall can be seen along with a small museum. More Roman finds from the area are housed In the Girolamo Rossi Archaeological Museum in the Fortezza dell’Annunziata.
• Markets: Ventimiglia has a good covered food market, open on weekday mornings. On Fridays a huge flea market runs along the river and sea in the modern town.
• Seaside promenade and beaches: A long promenade runs along the sea with good beaches and places to swim all along it. Restaurants by the sea serve fresh seafood and some bars have nightlife during the summer season.

Near Ventimiglia

Hanbury Gardens are a few kilometers outside town, reached by car, bus, or taxi. The beautiful gardens, Italy’s largest, surrounding the former villa of Sir Thomas Hanbury are built on a slope extending almost to the sea. In addition to exotic flowers and plants, there are several fabulous view spots within the gardens. A minimum of one hour is recommended but longer would be better. The gardens are open all year with a variety of flowers and plants to see each season.

Remains from a Cro-Magnon family, fossils, stone tools, and other Paleolithic artifacts were found in the caves of Balzi and some are displayed in the 2 museums at the park (closed Mondays). A few of the caves can also be visited.

Both the Italian Riviera town of Sanremo and the French town of Menton are a very short train ride away. Other Italian seaside towns, Monaco, and Nice (France) can also be reached by train. If you have a car, you can explore the interesting interior mountain towns and picturesque perched villages.

Visit Ventimiglia

In western Liguria and just a few kilometers from the border with France, Ventimiglia is in an enviable natural position between the Italian Riviera and the Cote d'Azur, and has long been a popular tourist destination.

Although it is not the most visited of the Riviera towns, Ventimiglia is charming because of its pastel coloured houses, and there are several places of interest in the old town as well as easy access to several interesting local highlights.

Being 'next door' to Menton, one of the most beautiful towns in France and just a few kilometres to the west, would leave almost anywhere else looking a bit run down! I suspect that Ventimiglia is visited more by those who are staying on the French Riviera and want an 'Italian experience' than those travelling around Italy.

Explore Ventimiglia

For the purposes of your visit it is easiest to think of Ventimiglia as being in two distinct parts: the higher old town with an interesting historic cente and the more recent town below, the two separated by the Roia River. It is among the steep and narrow streets of the old town that you will spend most of your visit.

There is also a beach in Ventimiglia at the mouth of the river, rather stony but with lovely views along the Riviera coast.

There are several historic buildings of particular interest, with the Romanesque Cathedral of Ventimiglia , dating from the 11th - 13th centuries, among the most notable religious monuments. In the 12th century baptistry you can admire the “Madonna with Child” by Barnaba da Modena (1328-1386).

Also in the old town the Church of San Francesco , which was built by the Counts of Ventimiglia in the 10th century as a family chapel, was fully rebuilt after World War II but retains its 11th century Romanesque structure. Originally this church had three aisles, with the apse, nave and bell tower added in the 13th century.

The Romanesque crypt is the highlight, built with columns of marble brough here from as far afield as Egypt.

Near the Church of San Michele , situated on the ancient route of the Roman road that led to Provence, you can see the former Municipal Theater that today houses the Aprosiana Municipal Library. The library takes its name from its founder, Angelic Aprosio (1607-1681), an erudite Augustinian monk born in Ventimiglia.

The Aprosiana Library was the the first public library in Liguria, with several thousand volumes, codes, and an important collection of Greek and Roman coins.

Other buildings of note in Ventimiglia include the Public Palace, of medieval origin; the Loggia of the Magistrate of Abundance or Parliament, the Opera and the Oratorio di San Secondo.

Among the many well preserved medieval gates into the city in Ventimiglia the most interesting is the 12th century Canarda gate which once provided westward access to the walled city. In ancient times the old road leading from Rome to Provence and Spain, the “Via Julia Augusta”, was just below this gate.

On the Tower, in gothic style and restored by Sir T. Hanbury (1832-1907), there is a plaque reminding us of some of the illustrious men that have visited the city over the centuries such as Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1627) and Charles V (1500-1558).

The port in Ventimiglia is defended by the tower which has a double row of slits on the outside. On the west side the gate has two arches - the gap that separates them is the machicolation through which the defenders, protected inside the tower, dropped rocks and boiling oil on those who wished to undermine their defences. On the outer arch a lion on a tower holding a cross is carved.

The inner side of the gate is protected from the sea by a wall with loopholes that have views of the nearby French Riviera. The fort, built in the early 19th century, has some of the most beautiful views of the “Riviera dei Fiori”. The construction was once part of a complex defensive system, connected with walkways and underground to the Fort Saint Paul above.

Ancient Ventimiglia

A museum in Ventimiglia exhibits various remains of ancient Albintimilium such as glassware, perfume containers, tableware, paterae, cups, glasses, clay figurines depicting gods and heroes, votive lamps of burial, a Roman lapidar with 50 inscriptions, 16 marble busts from the early Imperial age and various sculptures from Hanbury’s collection (statues, texts, reliefs, sarcophagi).

Among the most prestigious items in the museum are a 3rd century cup with wheel cut decoration depicting a triton with marine motifs and a pharmacists bottle from the end of the first century AD.

Festivities and cuisine

Note: we visited Ventimiglia as a day trip from Menton (a short train ride, across the border into France) on a Friday when an extensive market takes over much of the town with lots of cheap clothes, leather goods, fake brand name items. This market attracts lots of bargain hunters from across the border in France but does make the town rather chaotic!

During the summer in Ventimiglia you can watch the parade, and the “Battle of Flowers”, a traditional parade that takes place during the months of June and July.

This is also a good opportunity to try the local specialities such as pesto; a cake made with chickpea flour, water, salt and olive oil known as "barbagiuai"; and the “pisciadela”, a pizza or a focaccia with tomatoes, anchovies, olives and garlic. Among the local wines, be sure to try the Rossese and Vermentino.

As well as exploring along the Mediterranean coast in both directions from here, we suggest you also visit the beautiful gardens at nearby Villa Hanbury . The village at Dolceacqua , a short distance north of Ventimiglia, is also pretty and a pleasure to explore.

Situated near the coast of western Liguria in north-west Italy, Ventimiglia is as close to the French riviera resorts of Nice and Menton as it is to the Italian resort of San Remo , a short distance along the coast to the east.

Lady’s Guide to Things to Do in Ventimiglia, Italy

Ever heard of Ventimiglia? Most people haven’t. This Italian gem is as under-the-radar as European cities get, but it’s worth a trip to explore the stunning old town, enjoy fresh seafood, and take in dazzling Mediterranean views. If you want to discover it, today I bring you A Lady in London’s guide to things to do in Ventimiglia.

Just across the border from the French Riviera, Ventimiglia is a vibrant coastal city in Italy’s Liguria. Divided in half by the Roia River, the old town is on one side and the new on the other.

Ventimiglia is best known for being home to a famous market that attracts locals and visitors from all over. It also has beaches and a colorful old town to round out the scene.

The city is a great day trip from Nice or Monaco . It’s fun to spend time soaking up the sun on the beach, exploring the narrow streets, and enjoying a meal on the waterfront. In fact, that’s what I’m doing today.

How to Get to Ventimiglia

It’s easy to get to Ventimiglia, too. A direct train line runs between Nice and Ventimiglia (it also stops in Monaco). Trains from Genoa and other parts of the Riviera of Flowers stop here, too.

Ventimiglia’s train station is located in the heart of the city and is a short walk from the waterfront and the old town.

Where to Stay in Ventimiglia

Once in the city, there are so many things to do in Ventimiglia that you’ll be tempted to stay a night. There are a lot of accommodation options and hotels in Ventimiglia, so you’ll have plenty of choice.

If you’re looking for a hotel, Le calandre is just the place. It has balconies with great sea views, colorful room decor, and friendly staff.

If you want an apartment rental, Carso 10 is ideal. Located right in the center of town, this stylish studio comes complete with Italian food and wine from the owners.

Things to Do in Ventimiglia

Whether you choose to visit for a day trip or overnight, you’ll find a wealth of things to do in Ventimiglia. From important libraries to beautiful gardens, pebble beaches to bustling markets, this city has a lot to offer.

If you like visiting for big occasions, there’s a festival called Battaglia di Fiori , or Battle of the Flowers. Taking place every other June, it features a big parade with floats and performers (and of course, flowers).

Ventimiglia Old Town

One of my favorite things to do in Ventimiglia is explore the old town. Called Ventimiglia Alta due to its position on a hill, this part of the city is home to narrow streets, stunning views, and tunnels cut through rock.

Buildings and houses are painted in bright hues, making exploring exciting. From pinks and yellows to reds and greens, you can find every shade here. Some even have faded paintings on their facades.

Historic Landmarks

But it’s not just streets. The old town is also home to some important historic landmarks. From oratories to convents, there are a lot of them dotted around.

On this visit, I duck into the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, a beautiful 11th-century church with an octagonal Romanesque baptistry housing a 13th-century limestone basin.

I also visit the Chiesa di San Michele church. Established in the 11th century, it originally served as the chapel of the Counts of Ventimiglia.

Elsewhere in the old town, the Biblioteca Aprosiana is a Baroque public library founded by Augustinian monk Angelico Aprosio in 1648.

Housed in the city’s old theater, the library holds Italy’s second-largest collection of 17th-century books and manuscripts. There’s also a 6th-century Christian sarcophagus inside.

Markets in Ventimiglia

While the old town is beautiful, one of the most popular things to do in Ventimiglia is visit the Friday market.

Located on the boardwalk by the waterfront, the market features stands selling everything from fresh produce to flowers. There’s also clothing, furniture, and local Italian goods for sale.

There’s a limited market on other days of the week apart from Sunday, so you can still enjoy the market if you’re not in town for the main event.

When I studied in Nice as a teenager, the mother of my host family used to come to the market to buy citrus fruit every week. I still remember the clementines being the best I’ve ever had.

There’s also a covered market near the train station in Ventimiglia that sells local fruits, vegetables, flowers, and fish. It’s open all week, so it’s a good place to visit if you want another market experience.

Restaurants in Ventimiglia

And speaking of food, there are a lot of good restaurants in Ventimiglia. I head to the waterfront to eat at Ristorante Stella Marina, where an outdoor table overlooking the beach is the perfect place for lunch.

Zucchini and prawn pasta goes down a treat as I sit looking out across the Mediterranean.

Beaches in Ventimiglia

Ventimiglia is also home to some great beaches. The city center itself is fronted by wide pebble-studded shorelines on both sides of the river, so it’s easy to get to the beach as soon as you arrive.

Slightly further afield, the Spiaggia delle Calandre is another good choice. It’s known for its wide stretch of golden sand and is popular with locals and visitors alike.

Over towards the French border, the Spiaggia dei Balzi Rossi is a beautiful beach surrounded by red cliffs and wild flowers.

Things to Do in Ventimiglia and Beyond

The Castello di Doria castle is just 15 minutes away, and the nearby Hanbury Gardens have over 2,000 species of Mediterranean plants to go with their stunning views.
