Brussels Tram Experience

When Brussels Tourism announced the launch of the Tram Experience, the concept was met with some scepticism. Now, almost a year in, the tram is going strong, to great acclaim. The Tram Experience is a specially re-fitted classic tram that circles the outer ring of Brussels. Diners are served a four-course meal, with drinks, while making the circuit of the city. The menu changes every few weeks, and each one is created by a different Belgian celebrity chef (many of them Michelin star holders). Besides the excellent food, one of the highlights of dining on the tram, is watching the double-takes of people who see it pass by. The Tram Experience books up well in advance, so be sure to reserve your seat long before your visit to Brussels.

Everything you need to know about the tram in Brussels

Updated October 11, 2023 by pierre

Instructions for the Brussels tram!

Know that even if its official and correct name is "tramway", here everyone calls it "  Tram “. Are you going to take the Brussels tram for the first time? Good choice! it is a rather efficient public transport system thanks to its 19 different lines . The total distance exceeds 215km in the Brussels-Capital Region. It was born on May 1, 1869, its first line connected the Porte de Namur to the Bois de la Cambre.

The Brussels tram has evolved a lot, so here is a short summary and instructions. In this article you will learn:

  • The most interesting trams for getting around Brussels
  • The different ways to pay for your tram ride in Brussels
  • How to pay for your tram journey by credit card directly on the tram

1. The different tram lines in Brussels

In total Brussels has 19 tram lines. You obviously won't take them all. Three lines are interesting and deserve to be known to all tourists because they are very practical:

  • 5 online   – If you are thinking of going to Brupark, visit the Heizel,  the Atomium ou Mini Europe , this line is an alternative to Metro 6
  • Lines 92/94 : it crosses the top of Brussels. You can use it to go from the Royal Palace and Brussels Park to the Courthouse and Avenue Louise (passing through the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, the Notre-Dame du Sablon church)
  • Lines 81 : it will take you from Saint-Gilles and the southern district to Montgommery to see the XNUMXth anniversary park .
  • tram 44 : if you want to go to the African Museum and Tervuren

3. Brussels Tram Map

If you travel by public transport, it is better to look at the network plan in advance. There are great possibilities for getting around with the STIB in Brussels: bus, tram, metro… Here is the map of the STIB network

MAP Tram (c) STIB

2. How do I pay for the tram in Brussels?

Now that you know where the trams go and their map, find out how to pay. Be aware that checks are sometimes frequent on certain lines. An oversight can cost you dearly…. It's easy to pay. Inside each vehicle: bus, tram or metro station there is a contactless ticket validator. Thanks to this, you can pay with your contactless card: Bancontact, Mastercard, visa, smartwatch and Smartphone with Google Pay, Apple Pay, Fitbit Pay and Garmin Pay etc… The red validator also reads MOBIB cards. If you do not want to pay “contactless”, the Mobib card can be purchased in advance.

How to pay with your bank card for the tram or bus?

If you want to pay with your contactless card, it's easy. All you need is a bank card (debit or credit). This contactless payment is a quick & easy way to pay. No more queues at the machine to buy a tram ticket.

If, after your journey, you wish to consult the amount paid, all you have to do is go to the website www.stib.be and create an account. You will then be able to see how much your journey cost you.

Where can I buy a Brussels MOBIB tram card?

If you don't have contactless payment or a bank card, to buy a ticket or a mobib card, all you have to do is go to a "GO machine" or STIB point of sale. Also some partner bookstores and supermarkets sell MOBIB cards

Meals on wheels: Brussels tram experience returns with culinary tour

Meals on wheels: Brussels tram experience returns with culinary tour

The unique Tram Experience, which invites people aboard one of Brussels' iconic trams for a gastronomic tour of the capital, will return this September with a new concept.

Ever seen a tram rumble past you in Brussels, but instead of commuters, it is filled with people eating at tables in a romantic setting? It was most likely to have been the Tram Experience which, for more than ten years, has been transporting food and public transport lovers alike while providing them with a good meal.

Back for its 11th edition, this unique way of dining is returning this September with a new programme of the world's leading chefs, coming from all over the world, ready to bring dishes rooted in their national cuisines to the mobile restaurant.

"For more than 10 years, the Tram Experience has been taking foodies on a gastronomic tour of the capital. This year, the tram travels to the rhythm of six renowned chefs," visit.brussels announced on Wednesday. "They invite you to discover their gastronomic universes of varied flavours and horizons."

Culinary world tour

The chefs this year include Brussels' very own Giovanni Bruno, chef of the Michelin-starred Ristorante Senzanome, who will be sharing a menu of Italian cuisine fusing traditional and innovative flavours from 1 September to 15 October.

Montreal-based chef Samuel Sirois, who represented Canada at the final of the Culinary Olympics this year, will also surprise passengers with a new menu combining local products from the gastronomic capitals of Canada, Montréal and Quebec, with a touch of Belgian cuisine.

During the festive season in December, Brussels chef Mallory Gabsi – a semi-finalist in season 11 of Top Chef – will be providing a special menu inspired from his new gastronomic restaurant in Paris.

In 2024, will then be kicked off in northern Italy, with Andrea Larossa from Turin, who will incorporate the rustic flavours of mountainous Piedmont cuisine, known for its antipasti, to warm up chilly winter evenings.

The Music of Hans Zimmer & Others

The best film music experience of the year presented by a special guest from “Pirates of the Caribbean” The symphonic world of Hans Zimmer with music from James Bond, The Lion King, The Pirates of the Caribbean, Gladiator, The Dark Knight, Inception, Interstellar, Top Gun, Dune and more! Berlin / Los Angeles – “The Music of Hans Zimmer & Others” is an unforgettable concert and audiovisual experience for all age groups, film enthusiasts, music lovers, and families. The best music will be performed by the Hollywood Film Orchestra in an impressive show with light installations, laser projections, and selected film clips. Star soloists from the Original Broadway Production will perform excerpts from “The Lion King”, Zimmer’s most beloved box office smash hit. No other composer has influenced the film world in the past two decades as much as the Oscar-, Globe- and Emmy-winning composer Hans Zimmer with his staggering compositions for films such as “James Bond”, “The Lion King”, “Pirates of the Caribbean”, “Gladiator”, “The Dark Knight”, “Man of Steel”, “Inception”, and “Interstellar”. Hans Zimmer wrote the film scores of more than 200 movies, won his second Oscar for "Dune" (2022), following his first Academy Award for "The Lion King" (1994). He named Ennio Morricone as his idol and role-model, whose work will be featured with excerpts from the films “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” and “Once Upon a Time in the West”. Zimmer followed Morricone’s example of composing the film music often before – instead of after – filming, and shaped the entire film. He changed the beginning of Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” for example, and the world-famous director moved into the studio of Hans Zimmer. THE HOLLYWOOD FILM ORCHESTRA The Hollywood Film Orchestra has been created for this concert series and works usually with state Orchestras from Europe. It has performed in the leading music venues of the world, from the Koncerthuset in Copenhagen to the Konzerthaus in Vienna, from Großes Festspielhaus Salzburg to Salle Pleyel in Paris, from Laeiszhalle Hamburg to Tonhalle Zürich.
